Almost Abelian Lie groups, subgroups and quotients

An almost Abelian Lie group is a non-Abelian Lie group with a codimension 1 Abelian normal subgroup. The majority of 3-dimensional real Lie groups are almost Abelian, and they appear in all parts of physics that deal with anisotropic media - cosmology, crystallography etc. In theoretical physics and differential geometry, almost Abelian Lie groups and their homogeneous spaces provide some of the simplest solvmanifolds on which a variety of geometric structures such as symplectic, Kähler, spin etc., are currently studied in explicit terms. Recently, almost Abelian Lie algebras were classified and studied in details. However, a systematic investigation of almost Abelian Lie groups has not been carried out yet, and the present paper is devoted to an explicit description of properties of this wide and diverse class of groups. The subject of investigation are real almost Abelian Lie groups with their Lie group theoretical aspects, such as the exponential map, faithful matrix representations, discrete and connected subgroups, quotients and automorphisms. The emphasis is put on explicit description of all technical details.

The structure of almost Abelian Lie algebras

An almost Abelian Lie algebra is a non-Abelian Lie algebra with a codimension 1 Abelian ideal. Most 3-dimensional real Lie algebras are almost Abelian, and they appear in every branch of physics that deals with anisotropic media - cosmology, crystallography etc. In differential geometry and theoretical physics, almost Abelian Lie groups have given rise to some of the simplest solvmanifolds on which various geometric structures such as symplectic, Kähler, spin etc., are currently studied in explicit terms. However, a systematic study of almost Abelian Lie groups and algebras from mathematics perspective has not been carried out yet, and the present paper is the first step in addressing this wide and diverse class of groups and algebras. The present paper studies the structure and important algebraic properties of almost Abelian Lie algebras of arbitrary dimension over any field of scalars. A classification of almost Abelian Lie algebras is given. All Lie subalgebras and ideals, automorphisms and derivations, Lie orthogonal operators and quadratic Casimir elements are described exactly.

Nonlinear (chiral) p-form electrodynamics

In our previous article Phys. Rev. Lett. 127 (2021) 271601, we announced a novel 'democratic' Lagrangian formulation of general nonlinear electrodynamics in four dimensions that features electric and magnetic potentials on equal footing. Here, we give an expanded and more detailed account of this new formalism, and then proceed to push it significantly further by building the corresponding Lagrangian theories of higher form field interactions in arbitrary dimensions. Special attention is given to interactions of chiral 2k-forms in 4k+2 dimensions, with further details for 2-forms in 6 dimensions and 4-forms in 10 dimensions. We comment more broadly on the structure of covariant equations of motion for chiral fields, and on the place of our Lagrangian theories in this context. The Lagrangian theories we develop are simple and explicit, and cover a much broader class of interactions than all past attempts in the literature.

Democratic Lagrangians for Nonlinear Electrodynamics

We construct a Lagrangian for general nonlinear electrodynamics that features electric and magnetic potentials on equal footing. In the language of this Lagrangian, discrete and continuous electric-magnetic duality symmetries can be straightforwardly imposed, leading to a simple formulation for theories with the $SO(2)$ duality invariance. When specialized to the conformally invariant case, our construction provides a manifestly duality-symmetric formulation of the recently discovered ModMax theory. We briefly comment on a natural generalization of this approach to $p$-forms in $2p+2$ dimensions.

Rigidity of a thin domain depends on the curvature, width, and boundary conditions

This paper is concerned with the study of linear geometric rigidity of shallow thin domains under zero Dirichlet boundary conditions on the displacement field on the thin edge of the domain. A shallow thin domain is a thin domain that has in-plane dimensions of order $O(1)$ and $ε,$ where $ε\in (h,1)$ is a parameter (here $h$ is the thickness of the shell). The problem has been solved in [8,10] for the case $ε=1,$ with the outcome of the optimal constant $C\sim h^{-3/2},$ $C\sim h^{-4/3},$ and $C\sim h^{-1}$ for parabolic, hyperbolic and elliptic thin domains respectively. We prove in the present work that in fact there are two distinctive scaling regimes $ε\in (h,\sqrt h]$ and $ε\in (\sqrt h,1),$ such that in each of which the thin domain rigidity is given by a certain formula in $h$ and $ε.$ An interesting new phenomenon is that in the first (small parameter) regime $ε\in (h,\sqrt h]$, the rigidity does not depend on the curvature of the thin domain mid-surface.

The second Weyl coefficient for a first order system

For a scalar elliptic self-adjoint operator on a compact manifold without boundary we have two-term asymptotics for the number of eigenvalues between zero and lambda when lambda tends to infinity, under an additional dynamical condition. This is a well known result of J.J.Duistermaat and V.W.Guillemin from 1975. In the case of an elliptic system of first order, the existence of two-term asymptotics was also established quite early and as in the scalar case Fourier integral operators have been the crucial tool. The complete computation of the coefficient of the second term was obtained only in 2013. In the present paper we simplify that calculation. The main observation is that with the existence of two-term asymptotics already established, it suffices to study the resolvent as a pseudodifferential operator in order to identify and compute the second coefficient.

Spectral asymptotics for first order systems

This is a review paper outlining recent progress in the spectral analysis of first order systems. We work on a closed manifold and study an elliptic self-adjoint first order system of linear partial differential equations. The aim is to examine the spectrum and derive asymptotic formulae for the two counting functions. Here the two counting functions are those for the positive and the negative eigenvalues. One has to deal with positive and negative eigenvalues separately because the spectrum is, generically, asymmetric.

Explicit harmonic and spectral analysis in Bianchi I-VII type cosmologies

The solvable Bianchi I-VII groups which arise as homogeneity groups in cosmological models are analyzed in a uniform manner. The dual spaces (the equivalence classes of unitary irreducible representations) of these groups are computed explicitly. It is shown how parameterizations of the dual spaces can be chosen to obtain explicit Plancherel formulas. The Laplace operator $Δ$ arising from an arbitrary left invariant Riemannian metric on the group is considered, and its spectrum and eigenfunctions are given explicitly in terms of that metric. The spectral Fourier transform is given by means of the eigenfunction expansion of $Δ$. The adjoint action of the group automorphisms on the dual spaces is considered. It is shown that Bianchi I-VII type cosmological spacetimes are well suited for mode decomposition. The example of the mode decomposed Klein-Gordon field on these spacetimes is demonstrated as an application.
