A Forward Simulation-Based Hierarchy of Linearizable Concurrent Objects

In this paper, we systematically investigate the connection between linearizable objects and forward simulation. We prove that the sets of linearizable objects satisfying wait-freedom (resp., lock-freedom or obstruction-freedom) form a bounded join-semilattice under the forward simulation relation, and that the sets of linearizable objects without liveness constraints form a bounded lattice under the same relation. As part of our lattice result, we propose an equivalent characterization of linearizability by reducing checking linearizability w.r.t. sequential specification $Spec$ into checking forward simulation by an object $\mathcal{U}_{Spec}$. To demonstrate the forward simulation relation between linearizable objects, we prove that the objects that are strongly linearizable w.r.t. the same sequential specification and are wait-free (resp., lock-free, obstruction-free) simulate each other, and we prove that the time-stamped queue simulates the Herlihy-Wing queue. We also prove that the Herlihy-Wing queue is simulated by $\mathcal{U}_{Spec}$, and thus, our equivalent characterization of linearizability can be used in the verification of linearizability.

Adaptive Disentangled Representation Learning for Incomplete Multi-View Multi-Label Classification

Multi-view multi-label learning frequently suffers from simultaneous feature absence and incomplete annotations, due to challenges in data acquisition and cost-intensive supervision. To tackle the complex yet highly practical problem while overcoming the existing limitations of feature recovery, representation disentanglement, and label semantics modeling, we propose an Adaptive Disentangled Representation Learning method (ADRL). ADRL achieves robust view completion by propagating feature-level affinity across modalities with neighborhood awareness, and reinforces reconstruction effectiveness by leveraging a stochastic masking strategy. Through disseminating category-level association across label distributions, ADRL refines distribution parameters for capturing interdependent label prototypes. Besides, we formulate a mutual-information-based objective to promote consistency among shared representations and suppress information overlap between view-specific representation and other modalities. Theoretically, we derive the tractable bounds to train the dual-channel network. Moreover, ADRL performs prototype-specific feature selection by enabling independent interactions between label embeddings and view representations, accompanied by the generation of pseudo-labels for each category. The structural characteristics of the pseudo-label space are then exploited to guide a discriminative trade-off during view fusion. Finally, extensive experiments on public datasets and real-world applications demonstrate the superior performance of ADRL.

A Slot Antenna Array with Reconfigurable RCS Using Liquid Absorber

This paper presents a slot antenna array with a reconfigurable radar cross section (RCS). The antenna system is formed by combining a liquid absorber with a 2*2 slot antenna array. The liquid absorber consists of a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) container, a 45% ethanol layer, and a metal ground, which is attached to the surface of the slot antenna array. The incident wave can be absorbed by the absorber rather than reflected in other directions when the PMMA container is filled with ethanol, which reduces the monostatic and bistatic RCS. Thus the RCS of the antenna can be changed by injecting and extracting ethanol while the antenna's radiation performance in terms of bandwidth, radiation patterns and gain is well sustained. In a complex communication system, this can be used to switch between detection and stealth mode. The mechanism of the absorber is investigated. The simulated results show that the antenna with this absorber has monostatic and bistatic RCS reduction bands from 2.0 GHz to 18.0 GHz, a maximum RCS reduction of 35 dB with an average RCS reduction of 13.28 dB. The antenna's operating band is 100 MHz. Without ethanol, the antenna has a realized gain of 12.1 dBi, and it drops by 2 dB when the lossy ethanol is injected. The measured results agree well with the simulated ones.

Learning Safe Neural Network Controllers with Barrier Certificates

We provide a novel approach to synthesize controllers for nonlinear continuous dynamical systems with control against safety properties. The controllers are based on neural networks (NNs). To certify the safety property we utilize barrier functions, which are represented by NNs as well. We train the controller-NN and barrier-NN simultaneously, achieving a verification-in-the-loop synthesis. We provide a prototype tool nncontroller with a number of case studies. The experiment results confirm the feasibility and efficacy of our approach.

Anonymously Analyzing Clinical Datasets

This paper takes on the problem of automatically identifying clinically-relevant patterns in medical datasets without compromising patient privacy. To achieve this goal, we treat datasets as a black box for both internal and external users of data that lets us handle clinical data queries directly and far more efficiently. The novelty of the approach lies in avoiding the data de-identification process often used as a means of preserving patient privacy. The implemented toolkit combines software engineering technologies such as Java EE and RESTful web services, to allow exchanging medical data in an unidentifiable XML format as well as restricting users to the need-to-know principle. Our technique also inhibits retrospective processing of data, such as attacks by an adversary on a medical dataset using advanced computational methods to reveal Protected Health Information (PHI). The approach is validated on an endoscopic reporting application based on openEHR and MST standards. From the usability perspective, the approach can be used to query datasets by clinical researchers, governmental or non-governmental organizations in monitoring health care services to improve quality of care.

A Framework for Automated and Certified Refinement Steps

The refinement calculus provides a methodology for transforming an abstract specification into a concrete implementation, by following a succession of refinement rules. These rules have been mechanized in theorem-provers, thus providing a formal and rigorous way to prove that a given program refines another one. In a previous work, we have extended this mechanization for object-oriented programs, where the memory is represented as a graph, and we have integrated our approach within the rCOS tool, a model-driven software development tool providing a refinement language. Hence, for any refinement step, the tool automatically generates the corresponding proof obligations and the user can manually discharge them, using a provided library of refinement lemmas. In this work, we propose an approach to automate the search of possible refinement rules from a program to another, using the rewriting tool Maude. Each refinement rule in Maude is associated with the corresponding lemma in Isabelle, thus allowing the tool to automatically generate the Isabelle proof when a refinement rule can be automatically found. The user can add a new refinement rule by providing the corresponding Maude rule and Isabelle lemma.
