Identifying a minimal flavor symmetry of the seesaw mechanism behind neutrino oscillations

In the canonical seesaw framework flavor mixing and CP violation in weak charged-current interactions of light and heavy Majorana neutrinos are correlated with each other and described respectively by the $3\times 3$ matrices $U$ and $R$. We show that the very possibility of $\big|U^{}_{μi}\big| = \big|U^{}_{τi}\big|$ (for $i = 1, 2, 3$), which is strongly indicated by current neutrino oscillation data, automatically leads to a novel prediction $\big|R^{}_{μi}\big| = \big|R^{}_{τi}\big|$ (for $i = 1, 2, 3$). We prove that behind these two sets of equalities and the experimental evidence for leptonic CP violation lies a minimal flavor symmetry -- the overall neutrino mass term keeps invariant when the left-handed neutrino fields transform as $ν^{}_{e \rm L} \to (ν^{}_{e \rm L})^c$, $ν^{}_{μ\rm L} \to (ν^{}_{τ\rm L})^c$, $ν^{}_{τ\rm L} \to (ν^{}_{μ\rm L})^c$ and the right-handed neutrino fields undergo an arbitrary unitary CP transformation. Such a generalized $μ$-$τ$ reflection symmetry may help constrain the flavor textures of active and sterile neutrinos to some extent in the seesaw mechanism.

One-loop radiative correction to the Toshev relation for neutrino oscillations in matter

The one-loop electroweak radiative corrections to coherent forward neutrino scattering in a medium slightly violates the tree-level universality of neutral-current contributions of three neutrino flavors to the matter potential that is relevant to neutrino oscillations in matter. We examine this small but nontrivial quantum effect by deriving the differential equations of those effective neutrino oscillation quantities with respect to the electron number density of matter. The tree-level Toshev relation $\sin 2\tildeθ_{23} \sin\tildeδ = \sin 2θ_{23} \sinδ$, which links the fundamental flavor-mixing and CP-violating parameters

A translational flavor symmetry in the mass terms of Dirac and Majorana fermions

Requiring the effective mass term for a category of fundamental Dirac or Majorana fermions of the same electric charge to be invariant under the translational transformations $ψ^{}_{α\rm L (R)} \to ψ^{}_{α\rm L (R)} + n^{}_α z^{}_{ψ\rm L(R)}$ in the flavor space, where $n^{}_α$ and $z^{}_{ψ\rm L(R)}$ stand respectively for the flavor-dependent complex numbers and a constant spinor field anticommuting with the fermion fields, we show that $n^{}_α$ can be identified as the elements $U^{}_{αi}$ in the $i$-th column of the unitary matrix $U$ used to diagonalize the corresponding Hermitian or symmetric fermion mass matrix $M^{}_ψ$, and $m^{}_i = 0$ holds accordingly. We find that the reverse is also true. Now that the mass spectra of charged leptons, up- and down-type quarks are all strongly hierarchical and current experimental data allow the lightest neutrino to be massless, we argue that the zero mass limit for the first-family fermions and the translational flavor symmetry behind it should be a natural starting point for building viable fermion mass models.

Correlations between quark mass and flavor mixing hierarchies

We calculate the quark flavor mixing matrix $V$ based on the Hermitian quark mass matrices $M^{}_{\rm u}$ and $M^{}_{\rm d}$ with vanishing $(1,1)$, $(1,3)$ and $(3,1)$ entries. The popular leading-order prediction $|V^{}_{ub}/V^{}_{cb}| \simeq \sqrt{m^{}_u/m^{}_c}$ is significantly modified, and the result agrees with the current experimental value. We find that behind the strong {\it mass} hierarchy of up- or down-type quarks is the weak {\it texture} hierarchy of $M^{}_{\rm u}$ or $M^{}_{\rm d}$ characterized by an approximate seesaw-like relation among its $(2,2)$, $(2,3)$ and $(3,3)$ elements.

A direct link between unflavored leptogenesis and low-energy CP violation via the one-loop quantum corrections

In the type-I seesaw mechanism the Casas-Ibarra (CI) parametrization provides a convenient description of the Dirac neutrino mass matrix in terms of the light and heavy Majorana neutrino masses, the lepton flavor mixing matrix $U$ and an unknown complex orthogonal matrix $O$. If $O$ is assumed to be real, it will be impossible to generate {\it unflavored} thermal leptogenesis via the lepton-number-violating and CP-violating decays of the lightest heavy Majorana neutrino. We find that this observation can be invalidated after small but unavoidable quantum corrections to the CI parametrization are taken into account with the help of the one-loop renormalization-group equations (RGEs) between the seesaw and electroweak scales. We illustrate a novel and viable unflavored leptogenesis scenario of this kind based on the RGEs in the seesaw-extended standard model, and show its direct link to the CP-violating phases of $U$ at low energies.

Bridging resonant leptogenesis and low-energy CP violation with an RGE-modified seesaw relation

We propose a special type-I seesaw scenario in which the Yukawa coupling matrix $Y^{}_ν$ can be fully reconstructed by using the light Majorana neutrino masses $m^{}_i$, the heavy Majorana neutrino masses $M^{}_i$ and the PMNS lepton flavor mixing matrix $U$. It is the RGE-induced correction to the seesaw relation that helps interpret the observed baryon-antibaryon asymmetry of the Universe via flavored resonant thermal leptogenesis with $M^{}_1 \simeq M^{}_2 \ll M^{}_3$. We show that our idea works well in either the $τ$-flavored regime with equilibrium temperature $T \simeq M^{}_1 \in (10^9, 10^{12}]$ GeV or the $(μ+τ)$-flavored regime with $T \simeq M^{}_1 \in (10^5, 10^9]$ GeV, provided the light neutrinos have a normal mass ordering. We find that the same idea is also viable for a {\it minimal} type-I seesaw model with two nearly degenerate heavy Majorana neutrinos.

Distinguishing between the twin $b$-flavored unitarity triangles on a circular arc

With the help of the generalized Wolfenstein parametrization of quark flavor mixing and CP violation, we calculate fine differences between the twin $b$-flavored unitarity triangles defined by $V^{*}_{ub} V^{}_{ud} + V^{*}_{cb} V^{}_{cd} + V^{*}_{tb} V^{}_{td} = 0$ and $V^{*}_{ud} V^{}_{td} + V^{*}_{us} V^{}_{ts} + V^{*}_{ub} V^{}_{tb} = 0$ in the complex plane. We find that vertices of the rescaled versions of these two triangles, described respectively by $\barρ + {\rm i} \barη = -\left(V^{*}_{ub} V^{}_{ud}\right)/\left(V^{*}_{cb} V^{}_{cd}\right)$ and $\widetildeρ + {\rm i} \widetildeη = -\left(V^{*}_{ub} V^{}_{tb}\right)/\left(V^{*}_{us} V^{}_{ts}\right)$, are located on a circular arc whose center and radius are given by $O = \left(0.5, 0.5 \cotα\right)$ and $R = 0.5 \cscα$ with $α$ being their common inner angle. The small difference between $(\barρ, \barη)$ and $(\widetildeρ, \widetildeη)$ is characterized by $\widetildeρ - \barρ \sim \widetildeη - \barη \sim {\cal O}(λ^2)$ with $λ\simeq 0.22$ being the Wolfenstein expansion parameter, and these two vertices are insensitive to the two-loop renormalization-group running effects up to the accuracy of ${\cal O}(λ^4)$. Some comments are also made on similar features of three pairs of the rescaled unitarity triangles of lepton flavor mixing and CP violation.

Flavor structures of charged fermions and massive neutrinos

Most of the free parameters in the Standard Model (SM) -- a quantum field theory which has successfully elucidated the behaviors of strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions of all the known fundamental particles, come from the lepton and quark flavors. The discovery of neutrino oscillations has proved that the SM is incomplete, at least in its lepton sector; and thus the door of opportunity is opened to exploring new physics beyond the SM and solving a number of flavor puzzles. In this review article we give an overview of important progress made in understanding the mass spectra, flavor mixing patterns, CP-violating effects and underlying flavor structures of charged leptons, neutrinos and quarks in the past twenty years. After introducing the standard pictures of fermion mass generation, flavor mixing and CP violation in the SM extended with the presence of massive Dirac or Majorana neutrinos, we briefly summarize current experimental knowledge about the flavor parameters of quarks and leptons. Various ways of describing flavor mixing and CP violation are discussed, the renormalization-group evolution of flavor parameters is illuminated, and the matter effects on neutrino oscillations are interpreted. Taking account of possible extra neutrino species, we propose a standard parametrization of the $6\times 6$ flavor mixing matrix and comment on the phenomenological aspects of heavy, keV-scale and light sterile neutrinos. We pay particular attention to those novel and essentially model-independent ideas or approaches regarding how to determine the Yukawa textures of Dirac fermions and the effective mass matrix of Majorana neutrinos, including simple discrete and continuous flavor symmetries. An outlook to the future development in unravelling the mysteries of flavor structures is also given.

On the two-loop radiative origin of the smallest neutrino mass and the associated Majorana CP phase

Given a massless neutrino at a superhigh energy scale $Λ$ (e.g., in the minimal seesaw model with only two heavy Majorana neutrinos), we calculate quantum corrections to its initially vanishing mass $m^{}_1$ (or $m^{}_3$) and the associated Majorana CP phase $ρ$ (or $\varrho$) at the Fermi scale $Λ^{}_{\rm F}$ by means of the two-loop renormalization-group equations (RGEs) in the standard model and with the help of the latest neutrino oscillation data. The numerical results obtained from our analytical approximations are in good agreement with those achieved by numerically solving the two-loop RGEs. In particular, we confirm that a nonzero value of $m^{}_1$ (or $m^{}_3$) of ${\cal O}(10^{-13})$ eV at $Λ^{}_{\rm F}$ can be radiatively generated from $m^{}_1 =0$ (or $m^{}_3 =0$) at $Λ\simeq 10^{14}$ GeV in the SM, and find that $ρ$ (or $\varrho$) may accordingly acquire an appreciable physical value. As a nontrivial by-product, the evolution of all the other (initially nonzero) flavor parameters of massive neutrinos is studied both analytically and numerically, by just keeping their leading (i.e., one-loop) RGE-induced effects.

Sum rules and asymptotic behaviors of neutrino mixing in dense matter

It has proved convenient to define the effective lepton flavor mixing matrix $\widetilde{U}$ and neutrino mass-squared differences $\widetildeΔ^{}_{ji} \equiv \widetilde{m}^2_j - \widetilde{m}^2_i$ (for $i,j =1,2,3$) to describe the phenomena of neutrino mixing and flavor oscillations in a medium, but the prerequisite is to establish direct and transparent relations between these effective quantities and their fundamental counterparts in vacuum. With the help of two sets of sum rules for $\widetilde{U}$ and $\widetildeΔ^{}_{ji}$, we derive new and exact formulas for moduli of the nine elements of $\widetilde{U}$ and the sides of its three Dirac unitarity triangles in the complex plane. The asymptotic behaviors of $|\widetilde{U}^{}_{αi}|^2$ and $\widetildeΔ^{}_{ji}$ (for $α= e, μ, τ$ and $i,j =1,2,3$) in very dense matter (namely, allowing the matter parameter $A = 2\sqrt{2} ~ G^{}_{\rm F} N^{}_e E$ to mathematically approach infinity) are analytically unraveled for the first time, and in this connection the confusion associated with the parameter redundancy of $\widetildeθ^{}_{12}$, $\widetildeθ^{}_{13}$, $\widetildeθ^{}_{23}$ and $\widetildeδ$ in the standard parametrization of $\widetilde{U}$ is clarified.

Testing unitarity of the $3\times 3$ neutrino mixing matrix in an atomic system

Unitarity of the $3\times 3$ lepton flavor mixing matrix $V$ is unavoidably violated in a seesaw mechanism if its new heavy degrees of freedom are slightly mixed with the active neutrino flavors. We propose to use the atomic transition process ${\left| \rm e \right> \to\left|\rm g \right> + γ+ ν^{}_{i} + \overlineν^{}_{j}}$ (for $i, j = 1, 2, 3$), where $\left|\rm e \right>$ and $\left|\rm g \right>$ stand respectively for the excited and ground levels of an atomic system, to probe or constrain the unitarity-violating effects of $V$. We find that the photon spectrum of this transition will be distorted by the effects of $V V^\dagger \neq {\bf 1}$ and $V^\dagger V \neq {\bf 1}$ as compared with the $V V^\dagger = V^\dagger V = {\bf 1}$ case. We locate certain frequencies in the photon spectrum to minimize the degeneracy of effects of the unitarity violation and uncertainties of the flavor mixing parameters themselves. The requirements of a nominal experimental setup to test the unitarity of $V$ are briefly discussed.

Towards the meV limit of the effective neutrino mass in neutrinoless double-beta decays

In this paper, we emphasize why it is important for future neutrinoless double-beta ($0νββ$) decay experiments to reach the sensitivity to the effective neutrino mass $|m^{}_{ββ}| \approx 1~{\rm meV}$. Assuming such a sensitivity and the precisions on neutrino oscillation parameters after the JUNO experiment, we fully explore the constrained regions of the lightest neutrino mass $m^{}_1$ and two Majorana-type CP-violating phases $\{ρ, σ\}$. The implications for the neutrino mass spectrum, the effective neutrino mass $m^{}_β$ in beta decays and the sum of three neutrino masses $Σ\equiv m^{}_1 + m^{}_2 + m^{}_3$ relevant for cosmological observations are also discussed.

A review of mu-tau flavor symmetry in neutrino physics

Behind the observed pattern of lepton flavor mixing is a partial or approximate mu-tau flavor symmetry --- a milestone on our road to the true origin of neutrino masses and flavor structures. In this review article we first describe the features of mu-tau permutation and reflection symmetries, and then explore their various consequences on model building and neutrino phenomenology. We pay particular attention to soft mu-tau symmetry breaking, which is crucial for our deeper understanding of the fine effects of flavor mixing and CP violation.

Analytical approximations for matter effects on CP violation in the accelerator-based neutrino oscillations with E \lesssim 1 GeV

Given an accelerator-based neutrino experiment with the beam energy E \lesssim 1 GeV, we expand the probabilities of ν_μ\to ν_e and \overline ν_μ\to \overline ν_e oscillations in matter in terms of two small quantities Δ_{21}/Δ_{31} and A/Δ_{31}, where Δ_{21} \equiv m^2_2 - m^2_1 and Δ_{31} \equiv m^2_3 - m^2_1 are the neutrino mass-squared differences, and A measures the strength of terrestrial matter effects. Our analytical approximations are numerically more accurate than those made by Freund in this energy region, and thus they are particularly applicable for the study of leptonic CP violation in the low-energy MOMENT, ESS\nuSM and T2K oscillation experiments. As a by-product, the new analytical approximations help us to easily understand why the matter-corrected Jarlskog parameter \widetilde{\cal J} peaks at the resonance energy E_* \simeq 0.14 GeV (or 0.12 GeV) for the normal (or inverted) neutrino mass hierarchy, and how the three Dirac unitarity triangles are deformed due to the terrestrial matter contamination. We also affirm that a medium-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment with the beam energy E lying in the E_* \lesssim E \lesssim 2 E_* range is capable of exploring leptonic CP violation with little matter-induced suppression.

Leptonic Unitarity Triangles and Effective Mass Triangles of the Majorana Neutrinos

Given the best-fit results of six neutrino oscillation parameters, we plot the Dirac and Majorana unitarity triangles (UTs) of the 3\times 3 lepton flavor mixing matrix to show their real shapes for the first time. The connections of the Majorana UTs with neutrino-antineutrino oscillations and neutrino decays are explored, and the possibilities of right or isosceles UTs are discussed. In the neutrino mass limit of m_1 \to 0 or m_3 \to 0, which is allowed by current experimental data, we show how the six triangles formed by the effective Majorana neutrino masses \langle m\rangle_{αβ} (for α, β= e, μ, τ) and their corresponding component vectors look like in the complex plane. The relations of such triangles to the Majorana phases and to the lepton-number-violating decays H^{++} \to α^+ β^+ in the type-II seesaw mechanism are also illustrated.

Terrestrial matter effects on reactor antineutrino oscillations at JUNO or RENO-50: how small is small?

We have carefully examined, in both analytical and numerical ways, how small the terrestrial matter effects can be in a given medium-baseline reactor antineutrino oscillation experiment like JUNO or RENO-50. Taking the ongoing JUNO experiment for example, we show that the inclusion of terrestrial matter effects may reduce the sensitivity of the neutrino mass ordering measurement by Δχ^2_{\rm MO} \simeq 0.6, and a neglect of such effects may shift the best-fit values of the flavor mixing angle θ_{12} and the neutrino mass-squared difference Δ_{21} by about 1σto 2σin the future data analysis. In addition, a preliminary estimate indicates that a 2σsensitivity of establishing the terrestrial matter effects can be achieved for about 10 years of data taking at JUNO with the help of a proper near detector implementation.

How to interpret a discovery or null result of the $0ν2β$ decay

The Majorana nature of massive neutrinos will be crucially probed in the next-generation experiments of the neutrinoless double-beta ($0ν2β$) decay. The effective mass term of this process, $\langle m\rangle^{}_{ee}$, may be contaminated by new physics. So how to interpret a discovery or null result of the $0ν2β$ decay in the foreseeable future is highly nontrivial. In this paper we introduce a novel three-dimensional description of $|\langle m\rangle_{ee}^{}|$, which allows us to see its sensitivity to the lightest neutrino mass and two Majorana phases in a transparent way. We take a look at to what extent the free parameters of $|\langle m\rangle_{ee}^{}|$ can be well constrained provided a signal of the $0ν2β$ decay is observed someday. To fully explore lepton number violation, all the six effective Majorana mass terms $\langle m\rangle_{αβ}^{}$ (for $α, β= e, μ, τ$) are calculated and their lower bounds are illustrated with the two-dimensional contour figures. The effect of possible new physics on the $0ν2β$ decay is also discussed in a model-independent way. We find that the result of $|\langle m\rangle_{ee}^{}|$ in the normal (or inverted) neutrino mass ordering case modified by the new physics effect may somewhat mimic that in the inverted (or normal) mass ordering case in the standard three-flavor scheme. Hence a proper interpretation of a discovery or null result of the $0ν2β$ decay may demand extra information from some other measurements.

Neutrino Masses and Flavor Oscillations

The focus is on the flavor oscillations of massive neutrinos, from which one has achieved some striking knowledge about their mass spectrum and flavor mixing pattern. The experimental prospects towards probing the absolute neutrino mass scale, possible Majorana nature and CP-violating effects will also be addressed.

Neutrino Physics with JUNO

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator detector, was proposed with the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy as a primary physics goal. It is also capable of observing neutrinos from terrestrial and extra-terrestrial sources, including supernova burst neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, geoneutrinos, atmospheric neutrinos, solar neutrinos, as well as exotic searches such as nucleon decays, dark matter, sterile neutrinos, etc. We present the physics motivations and the anticipated performance of the JUNO detector for various proposed measurements. By detecting reactor antineutrinos from two power plants at 53-km distance, JUNO will determine the neutrino mass hierarchy at a 3-4 sigma significance with six years of running. The measurement of antineutrino spectrum will also lead to the precise determination of three out of the six oscillation parameters to an accuracy of better than 1\%. Neutrino burst from a typical core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 inverse-beta-decay events and ~2000 all-flavor neutrino-proton elastic scattering events in JUNO. Detection of DSNB would provide valuable information on the cosmic star-formation rate and the average core-collapsed neutrino energy spectrum. Geo-neutrinos can be detected in JUNO with a rate of ~400 events per year, significantly improving the statistics of existing geoneutrino samples. The JUNO detector is sensitive to several exotic searches, e.g. proton decay via the $p\to K^++\barν$ decay channel. The JUNO detector will provide a unique facility to address many outstanding crucial questions in particle and astrophysics. It holds the great potential for further advancing our quest to understanding the fundamental properties of neutrinos, one of the building blocks of our Universe.

On the four-zero texture of quark mass matrices and its stability

We carry out a new study of quark mass matrices $M^{}_{\rm u}$ (up-type) and $M^{}_{\rm d}$ (down-type) which are Hermitian and have four zero entries, and find a new part of the parameter space which was missed in the previous works. We identify two more specific four-zero patterns of $M^{}_{\rm u}$ and $M^{}_{\rm d}$ with fewer free parameters, and present two toy flavor-symmetry models which can help realize such special and interesting quark flavor structures. We also show that the texture zeros of $M^{}_{\rm u}$ and $M^{}_{\rm d}$ are essentially stable against the evolution of energy scales in an analytical way by using the one-loop renormalization-group equations.

A partial $μ$-$τ$ symmetry and its prediction for leptonic CP violation

We find that the lepton flavor mixing matrix $U$ should possess a partial $μ$-$τ$ permutation symmetry $|U^{}_{μ1}| = |U^{}_{τ1}|$, and the latter predicts a novel correlation between the Dirac CP-violating phase $δ$ and three flavor mixing angles $θ^{}_{12}$, $θ^{}_{13}$ and $θ^{}_{23}$ in the standard parametrization. Inputting the best-fit values of these angles reported by Capozzi {\it et al}, we obtain the prediction $δ\simeq 255^\circ$ in the normal neutrino mass ordering, which is in good agreement with the best-fit result $δ\simeq 250^\circ$. In this connection the inverted neutrino mass ordering is slightly disfavored. If this partial $μ$-$τ$ symmetry is specified to be $|U^{}_{μ1}| = |U^{}_{τ1}| =1/\sqrt{6}~$, one can reproduce the phenomenologically-favored relation $\sin^2θ^{}_{12} = \left(1 - 2\tan^2θ^{}_{13}\right)/3$ and a viable two-parameter description of $U$ which were first uncovered in 2006. Moreover, we point out that the octant of $θ^{}_{23}$ and the quadrant of $δ$ can be resolved thanks to the slight violation of $|U^{}_{μ2}| = |U^{}_{τ2}|$ and $|U^{}_{μ3}| = |U^{}_{τ3}|$ either at the tree level or from radiative corrections.

Commutators of lepton mass matrices associated with seesaw and leptogenesis

The origin of tiny neutrino masses and the baryon number asymmetry of the Universe are naturally interpreted by the canonical seesaw and leptogenesis mechanisms, in which there are the heavy Majorana neutrino mass matrix $M_{\rm R}$, the Dirac neutrino mass matrix $M_{\rm D}$, the charged-lepton mass matrix $M_\ell$ and the effective (light) neutrino mass matrix $M_ν$. We find that ${\rm Im}\left(\det\left[ M^\dagger_{\rm D} M_{\rm D}, M^\dagger_{\rm R} M_{\rm R} \right]\right)$, ${\rm Im}\left(\det\left[ M_\ell M^\dagger_\ell, M_νM^\dagger_ν\right]\right)$ and ${\rm Im}\left(\det\left[ M_\ell M^\dagger_\ell, M_{\rm D} M^\dagger_{\rm D} \right]\right)$ can serve for a basis-independent measure of CP violation associated with lepton-number-violating decays of heavy neutrinos, flavor oscillations of light neutrinos and lepton-flavor-violating decays of charged leptons, respectively. We first calculate these quantities with the help of a standard parametrization of the $6\times 6$ flavor mixing matrix, and then discuss their implications on both leptogenesis and CP violation at low energy scales. A comparison with the weak-basis invariants of leptogenesis as proposed by Branco {\it et al} is also made.

Geometry of the effective Majorana neutrino mass in the neutrinoless double-beta decay

The neutrinoless double-beta ($0νββ$) decay is a unique process to identify the Majorana nature of massive neutrinos, and its rate depends on the size of the effective Majorana neutrino mass $\langle m\rangle_{ee}$. We put forward a novel "coupling-rod" diagram to describe $\langle m\rangle_{ee}$ in the complex plane, by which the effects of the neutrino mass ordering and CP-violating phases on $\langle m\rangle_{ee}$ are intuitively understood. We show that this geometric language allows us to easily obtain the maximum and minimum of $|\langle m\rangle_{ee}|$. It remains usable even if there is a kind of new physics contributing to $\langle m\rangle_{ee}$, and it can also be extended to describe the effective Majorana masses $\langle m\rangle_{eμ}$, $\langle m\rangle_{eτ}$, $\langle m\rangle_{μμ}$, $\langle m\rangle_{μτ}$ and $\langle m\rangle_{ττ}$ which may appear in some other lepton-number-violating processes.

Quark Mass Hierarchy and Flavor Mixing Puzzles

The fact that quarks of the same electric charge possess a mass hierarchy is a big puzzle in particle physics, and it must be highly correlated with the hierarchy of quark flavor mixing. A comparison between the salient features of quark and lepton flavor mixing structures is also made.

Resolving the octant of theta_{23} via radiative mu-tau symmetry breaking

We point out that the observed neutrino mixing pattern at low energies is very likely to originate from the 3 times 3 lepton flavor mixing matrix U which possesses the exact mu-tau permutation symmetry |U_{mu i}| = |U_{tau i}| (for i=1,2,3) at a superhigh energy scale Lambda_{mu tau} \sim 10^{14} GeV. The deviation of theta_{23} from 45^\circ and that of delta from 270^\circ in the standard parametrization of U are therefore a natural consequence of small mu-tau symmetry breaking via the renormalization-group equations (RGEs) running from Lambda_{mu tau} down to the electroweak scale Lambda_{EW} \sim 10^2 GeV. In fitting current experimental data we find that the RGE-corrected value of theta_{23} is uniquely correlated with the neutrino mass ordering: theta_{23} \simeq 42.4^\circ reported by Capozzi et al (or theta_{23} \simeq 48.9^\circ reported by Forero et al) at Lambda_{EW} can arise from theta_{23} = 45^\circ at Lambda_{mu tau} in the minimal supersymmetric standard model if the neutrino mass ordering is inverted (or normal). Accordingly, the preliminary best-fit results of delta at Lambda_{EW} can also evolve from delta = 270^\circ at Lambda_{mu tau} no matter whether the massive neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana particles.

Leptonic commutators and clean T violation in neutrino oscillations

A realistic medium- or long-baseline neutrino experiment may suffer from terrestrial matter effects which are likely to contaminate the genuine T-violating asymmetry between ν_α\to ν_βand ν_β\to ν_αoscillations. With the help of the commutators of lepton mass matrices in matter, we show that this kind of contamination is negligible for a variety of experiments provided the neutrino beam energy E and the baseline length L satisfy the condition 10^{-7} (L/km)^2 (GeV/E) << 1. The same observation is true for the CP-violating term of the asymmetry between ν_α\to ν_βand \barν_α\to \barν_βoscillations in matter.

Majorana CP-violating phases in neutrino-antineutrino oscillations and other lepton-number-violating processes

If the massive neutrinos are identified to be the Majorana particles via a convincing measurement of the neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay, how to determine the Majorana CP-violating phases in the 3 x 3 lepton flavor mixing matrix U will become a desirable experimental question. The answer to this question is to explore all the possible lepton-number-violating (LNV) processes in which the Majorana phases really matter. In this paper we carry out a systematic study of CP violation in neutrino-antineutrino oscillations, whose CP-conserving parts involve six independent 0νββ-like mass terms <m>_{αβ} and CP-violating parts are associated with nine independent Jarlskog-like parameters V^{ij}_{αβ} (for α, β= e, μ, τand i, j = 1, 2,3). With the help of current neutrino oscillation data, we analyze the sensitivities of |<m>_{αβ}| and V^{ij}_{αβ} to the three CP-violating phases of U, and illustrate the salient features of six independent CP-violating asymmetries between ν_α\to \barν_βand \barν_α\to ν_βoscillations. As a by-product, the effects of the CP-violating phases on the LNV decays of doubly- and singly-charged Higgs bosons are reexamined by taking account of the unsuppressed value of θ_{13}. Such CP-conserving LNV processes can be complementary to the possible measurements of neutrino-antineutrino oscillations in the distant future.

On the neutrino mass ordering and flavor mixing structure

Whether the neutrino mass spectrum is normal (m_1 < m_2 < m_3) or abnormal (m_3 < m_1 < m_2) remains an open question, but we show that the latter possibility looks quite unnatural when it is related to the lepton flavor mixing matrix U in a way similar to the reasonable correlation between the quark mass spectrum and the quark flavor mixing matrix. Taking into account the freedom in choosing the basis of weak interactions, we make a novel prediction for |U_{tau 1}|/|U_{tau 2}| in terms of the three neutrino masses in the large tau mass limit. This result is testable, and it implies that the normal neutrino mass ordering is more likely to coincide with the observed structure of U.

A further study of μ-τsymmetry breaking at neutrino telescopes after the Daya Bay and RENO measurements of θ_{13}

Current neutrino oscillation data indicate that θ_{13} is not strongly suppressed and θ_{23} might have an appreciable deviation from π/4, implying that the 3 \times 3 neutrino mixing matrix V does not have an exact μ-τpermutation symmetry. We make a further study of the effect of μ-τsymmetry breaking on the democratic flavor distribution of ultrahigh-energy (UHE) cosmic neutrinos at a neutrino telescope, and find that it is characterized by |V_{μi}|^2 - |V_{τi}|^2 which would vanish if either θ_{23} = π/4 and θ_{13} = 0 or θ_{23} = π/4 and δ= \pm π/2 held. We observe that the second-order μ-τsymmetry breaking term \barΔ may be numerically comparable with or even larger than the first-order term Δin the flux ratios ϕ^{T}_e : ϕ^{T}_μ: ϕ^{T}_τ\simeq (1- 2Δ) : (1 + Δ+ \barΔ) : (1 + Δ- \barΔ), if \sin (θ_{23} - π/4) and \cosδhave the same sign. The detection of the UHE \barν_e flux via the Glashow-resonance channel \barν_e e \to W^- \to anything is also discussed by taking account of the first- and second-order μ-τsymmetry breaking effects.

Enhanced Electromagnetic Transition Dipole Moments and Radiative Decays of Massive Neutrinos due to the Seesaw-induced Non-unitary Effects

In a simple extension of the standard electroweak theory where the phenomenon of lepton flavor mixing is described by a 3x3 unitary matrix V, the electric and magnetic dipole moments of three active neutrinos are suppressed not only by their tiny masses but also by the Glashow-Iliopoulos-Maiani (GIM) mechanism. We show that it is possible to lift the GIM suppression if the canonical seesaw mechanism of neutrino mass generation, which allows V to be slightly non-unitary, is taken into account. In view of current experimental constraints on the non-unitarity of V, we find that the effective electromagnetic transition dipole moments of three light Majorana neutrinos and the rates of their radiative decays can be maximally enhanced by a factor of O(10^2) and a factor of O(10^4), respectively. This important observation reveals an intrinsic and presumably significant correlation between the electromagnetic properties of massive neutrinos and the origin of their small masses.

Flavor Mixing Democracy and Minimal CP Violation

We point out that there is a unique parametrization of quark flavor mixing in which every angle is close to the Cabibbo angle θ_C \simeq 13^\circ with the CP-violating phase ϕ_q around 1^\circ, implying that they might all be related to the strong hierarchy among quark masses. Applying the same parametrization to lepton flavor mixing, we find that all three mixing angles are comparably large (around π/4) and the Dirac CP-violating phase ϕ_l is also minimal as compared with its values in the other eight possible parametrizations. In this spirit, we propose a simple neutrino mixing ansatz which is equivalent to the tri-bimaximal flavor mixing pattern in the ϕ_l \to 0 limit and predicts \sinθ_13 = 1/\sqrt{2} \sin (ϕ_l/2) for reactor antineutrino oscillations. Hence the Jarlskog invariant of leptonic CP violation J_l = (\sinϕ_l)/12 can reach a few percent if θ_13 lies in the range 7^\circ \leq θ_13 \leq 10^\circ.

Impacts of the Higgs mass on vacuum stability, running fermion masses and two-body Higgs decays

The latest results of the ATLAS and CMS experiments indicate 116 GeV \lesssim M_H \lesssim 131 GeV and 115 GeV \lesssim M_H \lesssim 127 GeV, respectively, for the mass of the Higgs boson in the standard model (SM) at the 95% confidence level. In particular, both experiments point to a preferred narrow mass range M_H \simeq (124 ... 126) GeV. We examine the impact of this preliminary result of M_H on the SM vacuum stability by using the two-loop renormalization-group equations (RGEs), and arrive at the cutoff scale Λ_VS \sim 4 \times 10^{12} GeV (for M_H = 125 GeV, M_t = 172.9 GeV and α_s(M_Z) = 0.1184) where the absolute stability of the SM vacuum is lost and some kind of new physics might take effect. We update the values of running lepton and quark masses at some typical energy scales, including the ones characterized by M_H, 1 TeV and Λ_VS, with the help of the two-loop RGEs. The branching ratios of some important two-body Higgs decay modes, such as H \to b\bar{b}, H \to τ^+ τ^-, H\to γγ, H\to W^+ W^- and H \to Z Z, are also recalculated by inputting the values of relevant particle masses at M_H.

Impacts of the observed theta_{13} on the running behaviors of Dirac and Majorana neutrino mixing angles and CP-violating phases

The recent observation of the smallest neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ in the Daya Bay and RENO experiments motivates us to examine whether $θ_{13} \simeq 9^\circ$ at the electroweak scale can be generated from $θ_{13} = 0^\circ$ at a superhigh-energy scale via the radiative corrections. We find that it is difficult but not impossible in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), and a relatively large $θ_{13}$ may have some nontrivial impacts on the running behaviors of the other two mixing angles and CP-violating phases. In particular, we demonstrate that the CP-violating phases play a crucial role in the evolution of the mixing angles by using the one-loop renormalization-group equations of the Dirac or Majorana neutrinos in the MSSM. We also take the "correlative" neutrino mixing pattern with $θ_{12} \simeq 35.3^\circ$, $θ_{23} = 45^\circ$ and $θ_{13} \simeq 9.7^\circ$ at a presumable flavor symmetry scale as an example to illustrate that the three mixing angles can receive comparably small radiative corrections and thus evolve to their best-fit values at the electroweak scale if the CP-violating phases are properly adjusted.

Implications of the Daya Bay observation of θ_{13} on the leptonic flavor mixing structure and CP violation

The Daya Bay Collaboration has recently reported its first \barν_e \to \barν_e oscillation result which points to θ_{13} \simeq 8.8^\circ \pm 0.8^\circ (best-fit \pm 1σrange) or θ_{13} \neq 0^\circ at the 5.2σlevel. The fact that this smallest neutrino mixing angle is not strongly suppressed motivates us to look into the underlying structure of lepton flavor mixing and CP violation. Two phenomenological strategies are outlined: (1) the lepton flavor mixing matrix U consists of a constant leading term U_0 and a small perturbation term ΔU; and (2) the mixing angles of U are associated with the lepton mass ratios. Some typical patterns of U_0 are reexamined by constraining their respective perturbations with current experimental data. We illustrate a few possible ways to minimally correct U_0 in order to fit the observed values of three mixing angles. We point out that the structure of U may exhibit an approximate μ-τpermutation symmetry in modulus, and reiterate the geometrical description of CP violation in terms of the leptonic unitarity triangles. The salient features of nine distinct parametrizations of U are summarized, and its Wolfenstein-like expansion is presented by taking U_0 to be the democratic mixing pattern.

Model-independent access to the structure of quark flavor mixing

We show that the observed pattern of quark flavor mixing, such as |V_{us}| \simeq |V_{cd}|, |V_{cb}| \simeq |V_{ts}|, |V_{cd}/V_{td}| \simeq |V_{cs}/V_{ts}| \simeq |V_{tb}/V_{cb}| and |V_{ub}/V_{cb}| < |V_{td}/V_{ts}|, can essentially be understood in the chiral and heavy quark mass limits. In particular, the phenomenologically successful relations |V_{ub}/V_{cb}| \sim \sqrt{m_u/m_c} and |V_{td}/V_{ts}| \simeq \sqrt{m_d/m_s} can be reasonably conjectured in the m_b \to \infty and m_t \to \infty limits, respectively. We stress that the strength of weak CP violation in the quark sector is determined by the moduli of the four corner elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. A comparison between strong and weak CP-violating effects in the standard model is also made.

The lepton flavor structures are explored by taking account of the observed value of the smallest neutrino mixing angle θ_{13}. The impact of θ_{13} on the running behaviors of other flavor mixing parameters is discussed in some detail. The seesaw-induced enhancement of the electromagnetic dipole moments for three Majorana neutrinos is also discussed in a TeV seesaw scenario.

Towards testing the unitarity of the 3X3 lepton flavor mixing matrix in a precision reactor antineutrino oscillation experiment

The 3X3 Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata-Pontecorvo (MNSP) lepton flavor mixing matrix may be slightly non-unitary if the three active neutrinos are coupled with sterile neutrinos. We show that it is in principle possible to test whether the relation |V_{e1}|^2 + |V_{e2}|^2 + |V_{e3}|^2 = 1 holds or not in a precision reactor antineutrino oscillation experiment, such as the recently proposed Daya Bay II experiment. We explore three categories of non-unitary effects on the 3X3 MNSP matrix: 1) the indirect effect in the (3+ 3) flavor mixing scenario where the three heavy sterile neutrinos do not take part in neutrino oscillations; 2) the direct effect in the (3+\mathbbm{1}) scenario where the light sterile neutrino can oscillate into the active ones; and 3) the interplay of both of them in the (3+\mathbbm{1}+ 2) scenario. We find that both the zero-distance effect and flavor mixing factors of different oscillation modes can be used to determine or constrain the sum of |V_{e1}|^2, |V_{e2}|^2 and |V_{e3}|^2 and its possible deviation from one, and the active neutrino mixing angles θ_{12} and θ_{13} can be cleanly extracted even in the presence of light or heavy sterile neutrinos. Some useful analytical results are obtained for each of the three scenarios.

A full parametrization of the 6 X 6 flavor mixing matrix in the presence of three light or heavy sterile neutrinos

In addition to three active neutrinos, one or more light sterile neutrinos have been conjectured to account for the LSND, MiniBooNE and reactor antineutrino anomalies (at the sub-eV mass scale) or for warm dark matter in the Universe (at the keV mass scale). Heavy Majorana neutrinos at or above the TeV scale have also been assumed in some seesaw models. Such hypothetical particles can weakly mix with active neutrinos, and thus their existence can be detected at low energies. In the (3+3) scenario with three sterile neutrinos we present a full parametrization of the 6 X 6 flavor mixing matrix in terms of fifteen rotation angles and fifteen phase angles. We show that this standard parametrization allows us to clearly describe the salient features of some problems in neutrino phenomenology, such as (a) possible contributions of light sterile neutrinos to the tritium beta decay and neutrinoless double-beta decay; (b) leptonic CP violation and deformed unitarity triangles of the 3 X 3 flavor mixing matrix of three active neutrinos; (c) a reconstruction of the 6 X 6 neutrino mass matrix in the type-(I+II) seesaw mechanism; and (d) flavored and unflavored leptogenesis scenarios in the type-I seesaw mechanism with three heavy Majorana neutrinos.

A Possible Detection of the Cosmic Antineutrino Background in the Presence of Flavor Effects

Lusignoli and Vignati have recently pointed out that it is in principle possible to directly detect the cosmic antineutrino background by using the rather stable isotope holmium-163 as a target, which can decay into dysprosium-163 via electron capture (EC) with a very small energy release. In this paper we calculate the rate of the relic antineutrino capture on holmium-163 nuclei against the corresponding EC decay rate by taking account of different neutrino mass hierarchies and reasonable values of theta_13. We show that such flavor effects are appreciable and even important in some cases, and stress that a calorimetric measurement of the cosmic antineutrino background might be feasible in the far future.

Captures of Hot and Warm Sterile Antineutrino Dark Matter on EC-decaying Ho-163 Nuclei

Capturing low-energy electron antineutrinos on radioactive Ho-163 nuclei, which decay into Dy-163 via electron capture (EC), is a noteworthy opportunity to detect relic sterile antineutrinos. Such hypothetical particles are more or less implied by current experimental and cosmological data, and they might be a part of hot dark matter or a candidate for warm dark matter in the Universe. Using the isotope Ho-163 as a target and assuming reasonable active-sterile antineutrino mixing angles, we calculate the capture rate of relic electron antineutrinos against the corresponding EC-decay background in the presence of sterile antineutrinos at the sub-eV or keV mass scale. We show that the signature of hot or warm sterile antineutrino dark matter should in principle be observable, provided the target is big enough and the energy resolution is good enough.

Finite quantum corrections to the tribimaximal neutrino mixing

We calculate finite quantum corrections to the tribimaximal neutrino mixing pattern V_TB in three generic classes of neutrino mass models. We show that three flavor mixing angles can all depart from their tree-level results described by V_TB, among which θ_12 is most sensitive to such quantum effects, and the Dirac CP-violating phase can radiatively arise from two Majorana CP-violating phases. This theoretical scheme offers a new way to understand why θ_13 is naturally small and how three CP-violating phases are presumably correlated.

Neutrinos as Hot or Warm Dark Matter

Both active and sterile sub-eV neutrinos can serve for hot dark matter (DM). On the other hand, keV sterile neutrinos could be a good candidate for warm DM. The beta-decaying (e.g., H-3 and Ru-106) and EC-decaying (e.g., Ho-163) nuclei are considered as the most promising targets to capture those extremely low energy neutrinos and antineutrinos, respectively. We calculate the capture rates of relic electron neutrinos and antineutrinos against the corresponding beta-decay or EC-decay backgrounds in different flavor mixing schemes. We stress that such direct laboratory measurements of hot or warm DM might not be hopeless in the long term.

Non-Hermitian Perturbations to the Fritzsch Textures of Lepton and Quark Mass Matrices

We show that non-Hermitian and nearest-neighbor-interacting perturbations to the Fritzsch textures of lepton and quark mass matrices can make both of them fit current experimental data very well. In particular, we obtain θ_{23} \simeq 45^\circ for the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle and predict θ_{13} \simeq 3^\circ to 6^\circ for the smallest neutrino mixing angle when the perturbations in the lepton sector are at the 20% level. The same level of perturbations is required in the quark sector, where the Jarlskog invariant of CP violation is about 3.7 \times 10^{-5}. In comparison, the strength of leptonic CP violation is possible to reach about 1.5 \times 10^{-2} in neutrino oscillations.

The Glashow resonance as a discriminator of UHE cosmic neutrinos originating from p-gamma and p-p collisions

We re-examine the interesting possibility of utilizing the Glashow resonance (GR) channel nu_ebar + e^- to W^- to anything to discriminate between the UHE cosmic neutrinos originating from p-gamma and pp collisions in an optically thin source of cosmic rays. We propose a general parametrization of the initial neutrino flavor composition by allowing the ratios Phi^{p gamma}_{pi^-}/Phi^{p gamma}_{pi^+} and Phi^{pp}_{pi^-}/Phi^{pp}_{pi^+} to slightly deviate from their conventional values. A relationship between the typical source parameter kappa = (Phi^{p gamma}_{pi^+} + Phi^{p gamma}_{pi^-})/(Phi^{pp}_{pi^+} + Phi^{pp}_{pi^-} + Phi^{p gamma}_{pi^+} + Phi^{p gamma}_{pi^-}) and the working observable of the GR R_0 = Phi^T_{nu_ebar}/ (Phi^T_{nu_mu} + Phi^T_{nu_mu}) at a neutrino telescope is derived, and the numerical dependence of R_0 on kappa is illustrated by taking account of the latest experimental data on three neutrino mixing angles. It is shown that a measurement of R_0 is in principle possible to identify the pure p-gamma interaction (kappa =1), the pure pp interaction (kappa =0) or a mixture of both of them (0 < kappa < 1) at a given source of UHE cosmic neutrinos. The event rate of the GR signal against the background is also estimated.

The T2K Indication of Relatively Large theta_13 and a Natural Perturbation to the Democratic Neutrino Mixing Pattern

The T2K Collaboration has recently reported a remarkable indication of the ν_μ-> ν_e oscillation which is consistent with a relatively large value of θ_{13} in the three-flavor neutrino mixing scheme. We show that it is possible to account for such a result of θ_{13} by introducing a natural perturbation to the democratic neutrino mixing pattern, without or with CP violation. A testable correlation between θ_{13} and θ_{23} is predicted in this ansatz. We also discuss the Wolfenstein-like parametrization of neutrino mixing, and comment on other possibilities of generating sufficiently large θ_{13} at the electroweak scale.

Two-zero Textures of the Majorana Neutrino Mass Matrix and Current Experimental Tests

In view of the latest T2K and MINOS neutrino oscillation data which hint at a relatively large theta_13, we perform a systematic study of the Majorana neutrino mass matrix M_nu with two independent texture zeros. We show that three neutrino masses (m_1, m_2, m_3) and three CP-violating phases (delta, rho, sigma) can fully be determined from two neutrino mass-squared differences (delta m^2, Delta m^2) and three flavor mixing angles (theta_12, theta_23, theta_13). We find that seven patterns of M_nu (i.e., A_{1,2}, B_{1,2,3,4} and C) are compatible with current experimental data at the 3-sigma level, but the parameter space of each pattern is more strictly constrained than before. We demonstrate that the texture zeros of M_nu are stable against the one-loop quantum corrections, and there exists a permutation symmetry between Patterns A_1 and A_2, B_1 and B_2 or B_3 and B_4. Phenomenological implications of M_nu on the neutrinoless double-beta decay and leptonic CP violation are discussed, and a realization of those texture zeros by means of the Z_n flavor symmetries is illustrated.

A Generic Diagonalization of the 3X3 Neutrino Mass Matrix and Its Implications on the mu-tau Flavor Symmetry and Maximal CP Violation

In the flavor basis where the mass eigenstates of three charged leptons are identified with their flavor eigenstates, one may diagonalize a 3 X 3 Majorana neutrino mass matrix M_nu by means of the standard parametrization of the 3 X 3 neutrino mixing matrix V. In this treatment the unphysical phases of M_nu have to be carefully factored out, unless a special phase convention for neutrino fields is chosen so as to simplify M_nu to M'_nu without any unphysical phases. We choose this special flavor basis and establish some exact analytical relations between the matrix elements of M'_nu M'_nu^dag and seven physical parameters --- three neutrino masses (m_1, m_2, m_3), three flavor mixing angles (theta_12, theta_13, theta_23) and the Dirac CP-violating phase (delta). Such results allow us to derive the conditions for the mu-tau flavor symmetry with theta_23 = pi/4 and maximal CP violation with delta = +/- pi/2, which should be useful for discussing specific neutrino mass models. In particular, we show that theta_23 = pi/4 and delta = +/- pi/2 keep unchanged when constant matter effects are taken into account for a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment.

Recent neutrino oscillation data hint that the smallest neutrino mixing angle theta_{13} is possible to lie in the range 5^\circ \lesssim θ_{13} \lesssim 12^\circ. We show that reasonable perturbations to the democratic mixing pattern, which is geometrically related to the tri-bimaximal mixing pattern through an equal shift θ_* \simeq 9.7^\circ of two large mixing angles, can naturally produce a nearly tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing matrix V with sufficiently large theta_{13}. Broken S_3 Flavor Symmetry of Leptons and Quarks: Mass Spectra and Flavor Mixing Patterns

We apply the discrete S_3 flavor symmetry to both lepton and quark sectors of the standard model extended by introducing one Higgs triplet and realizing the type-II seesaw mechanism for finite neutrino masses. The resultant mass matrices of charged leptons (M_l), neutrinos (M_nu), up-type quarks (M_u) and down-type quarks (M_d) have a universal form consisting of two terms: one is proportional to the identity matrix I and the other is proportional to the democracy matrix D. We argue that the textures of M_l, M_u and M_d are dominated by the D term, while that of M_nu is dominated by the I term. This hypothesis implies a near mass degeneracy of three neutrinos and can naturally explain why the mass matrices of charged fermions are strongly hierarchical, why the quark mixing matrix is close to I and why the lepton mixing matrix contains two large angles. We discuss a rather simple perturbation ansatz to break the S_3 symmetry and obtain more realistic mass spectra of leptons and quarks as well as their flavor mixing patterns. We stress that the I term, which used to be ignored from M_l, M_u and M_d, is actually important because it can significantly modify the smallest lepton flavor mixing angle theta_13 or three quark flavor mixing angles.

Casas-Ibarra Parametrization and Unflavored Leptogenesis

The Casas-Ibarra parametrization is a description of the Dirac neutrino mass matrix M_D in terms of the neutrino mixing matrix V, an orthogonal matrix O and the diagonal mass matrices of light and heavy Majorana neutrinos in the type-I seesaw mechanism. Because M^\dagger_D M_D is apparently independent of V but dependent on O in this parametrization, a number of authors have taken it for grant that unflavored leptogenesis has nothing to do with CP violation at low energies. Here we question this observation by clarifying the physical meaning of O. We establish a clear relationship between O and the observable quantities, and find that O does depend on V. Our general conclusion is that both unflavored leptogenesis and flavored leptogenesis have no direct connection with low-energy CP violation.

We examine possible signals of sterile neutrinos relative to active neutrinos, characterized by their masses and sensitive to their number densities, in the reaction $ν^{}_e + ~^3{\rm H} \to ~^3{\rm He} + e^-$ against the corresponding tritium beta decay. Intrinsic Deviation from the Tri-bimaximal Neutrino Mixing in a Class of A_4 Flavor Models

It is well known that the tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing pattern V_0 can be derived from a class of flavor models with the non-Abelian A_4 symmetry. We point out that small corrections to V_0, which are inherent in the A_4 models and arise from both the charged-lepton and neutrino sectors, have been omitted in the previous works. We show that such corrections may lead the 3 \times 3 neutrino mixing matrix V to a non-unitary deviation from V_0, but they cannot result in a nonzero value of θ_13 or any new CP-violating phases. Current experimental constraints on the unitarity of V allow us to constrain the model parameters to some extent.

Possible Capture of keV Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter on Radioactive beta-decaying Nuclei

There exists an observed "desert" spanning six orders of magnitude between O(0.5) eV and O(0.5) MeV in the fermion mass spectrum. We argue that it might accommodate one or more keV sterile neutrinos as a natural candidate for warm dark matter. To illustrate this point of view, we simply assume that there is one keV sterile neutrino nu_4 and its flavor eigenstate nu_s weakly mixes with three active neutrinos. We clarify different active-sterile neutrino mixing factors for the radiative decay of nu_4 and beta decays in a self-consistent parametrization. A direct detection of this keV sterile neutrino dark matter in the laboratory is in principle possible since the nu_4 component of nu_e can leave a distinct imprint on the electron energy spectrum when it is captured on radioactive beta-decaying nuclei. We carry out an analysis of its signatures in the capture reactions nu_e + ^{3}H \to ^{3}He + e^- and nu_e + ^{106}Ru \to ^{106}Rh + e^- against the beta-decay backgrounds, and conclude that this experimental approach might not be hopeless in the long run.

Relating the neutrino mixing angles to a lepton mass hierarchy

We propose two phenomenological scenarios of lepton mass matrices and show that either of them can exactly give rise to \tan^2θ_{13} = m_e/(m_e + 2m_μ), \tan^2θ_{23} = m_μ/(m_e + m_μ) and \tan^2θ_{12} = (m_e m_2 + 2m_μm_1)/(m_e m_1 + 2m_μm_2) in the standard parametrization of lepton flavor mixing. The third relation, together with current experimental data, predicts a normal but weak hierarchy for the neutrino mass spectrum. We also obtain θ_{13} \approx 2.8^\circ for the smallest neutrino mixing angle and J \approx 1.1% for the Jarlskog invariant of leptonic CP violation, which will soon be tested in the long-baseline reactor and accelerator neutrino oscillation experiments. Lepton-number-violating decays of singly-charged Higgs bosons in the minimal type-(I+II) seesaw model at the TeV scale

The lepton-number-violating decays of singly-charged Higgs bosons H^\pm are investigated in the minimal type-(I+II) seesaw model with one SU(2)_L Higgs triplet Δand one heavy Majorana neutrino N_1 at the TeV scale. We find that the branching ratios {\cal B}(H^+ \to l^+_α{\bar ν}) (for α= e, μ, τ) depend not only on the mass and mixing parameters of three light neutrinos ν_i (for i = 1, 2, 3) but also on those of N_1. Assuming the mass of N_1 to lie in the range of 200 GeV to 1 TeV, we figure out the generous interference bands for the contributions of ν_i and N_1 to {\cal B}(H^+ \to l^+_α{\bar ν}). Massive and Massless Neutrinos on Unbalanced Seesaws

The observation of neutrino oscillations requires new physics beyond the standard model (SM). A SM-like gauge theory with p lepton families can be extended by introducing q heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos but preserving its SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y gauge symmetry. The overall neutrino mass matrix M turns out to be a symmetric (p+q) x (p+q) matrix. Given p>q, the rank of M is in general equal to 2q, corresponding to 2q non-zero mass eigenvalues. The existence of (p-q) massless left-handed Majorana neutrinos is an exact consequence of the model, independent of the usual approximation made in deriving the Type-I seesaw relation between the effective p x p light Majorana neutrino mass matrix M_νand the q x q heavy Majorana neutrino mass matrix M_R. In other words, the numbers of massive left- and right-handed neutrinos are fairly matched. A good example to illustrate this seesaw fair play rule is the minimal seesaw model with p=3 and q=2, in which one massless neutrino sits on the unbalanced seesaw.

Nearly Tri-bimaximal Neutrino Mixing and CP Violation from mu-tau Symmetry Breaking

Assuming the Majorana nature of massive neutrinos, we generalize the Friedberg-Lee neutrino mass model to include CP violation in the neutrino mass matrix $M^{}_ν$. We show that a favorable neutrino mixing pattern (with $θ^{}_{12} \approx 35.3^\circ$, $θ^{}_{23} = 45^\circ$, $θ^{}_{13} \neq 0^\circ$ and $δ= 90^\circ$) can naturally be derived from $M^{}_ν$, if it has an approximate or softly-broken $μ$-$τ$ symmetry. We point out a different way to obtain the nearly tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing with $δ= 0^\circ$ and non-vanishing Majorana phases. The most general case, in which all the free parameters of $M^{}_ν$ are complex and the resultant neutrino mixing matrix contains both Dirac and Majorana phases of CP violation, is also discussed.

Such a novel parametrization is quite different from the "standard" one used in the literature and can lead to greatly simplified RG equations for three mixing angles and the physical CP-violating phase(s) in the standard model or its minimal supersymmetric extension, no matter whether neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana particles. Only 24 of them, which can be classified into a few distinct categories, are found to be compatible with current neutrino oscillation data at the $3σ$ level. A peculiar feature of the lepton mass matrices in each category is that they have the same phenomenological consequences. Taking account of a simple seesaw scenario for six parallel patterns of the charged lepton and Dirac neutrino mass matrices with six zeros, we show that it is possible to fit the experimental data at or below the $2σ$ level. In particular, the maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing can be reconciled with a strong neutrino mass hierarchy in the seesaw case. Numerical predictions are also obtained for the neutrino mass spectrum, flavor mixing angles, CP-violating phases and effective masses of the tritium beta decay and the neutrinoless double beta decay.

Direct CP Violation and Isospin Triangles of B->ππDecays

The recent observation of B^0_d->π^0π^0 and \bar{B}^0_d->π^0π^0 decay modes allows us to make a fresh isospin analysis of B->ππtransitions. We find that current experimental data can impose some model-independent constraints on the parameter space of direct CP violation in B_d->π^+π^- and B_d->π^0π^0. Furthermore, we establish a direct relationship between the weak phase αand the charge-averaged branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries of B->ππdecays.

Final-state Rescattering and SU(3) Symmetry Breaking in B->DK and B->DK^* Decays

The first observation of $\bar{B}^0_d\to D^0\bar{K}^0$ and $\bar{B}^0_d\to D^0\bar{K}^{*0}$ transitions by the Belle Collaboration allows us to do a complete isospin analysis of $B\to DK^{(*)}$ decay modes. We find that their respective isospin phase shifts are very likely to lie in the ranges $37^\circ \leq (ϕ_1 -ϕ_0)_{DK} \leq 63^\circ$ (or around $50^\circ$) and $25^\circ \leq (ϕ_1 -ϕ_0)_{DK^*} \leq 50^\circ$ (or around $35^\circ$), although the possibility $(ϕ_1 -ϕ_0)_{DK} = (ϕ_1 -ϕ_0)_{DK^*} = 0^\circ$ cannot be ruled out at present. Thus significant final-state rescattering effects are possible to exist in such exclusive $|ΔB| = |ΔC| = |ΔS| =1$ processes. We determine the spectator and color-suppressed spectator quark-diagram amplitudes of $B\to DK$ and $B\to DK^*$ decays, and compare them with the corresponding quark-diagram amplitudes of $B\to Dπ$ and $B\to Dρ$ decays. The effects of SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking are in most cases understandable in the factorization approximation, which works for the individual isospin amplitudes. Very instructive predictions are also obtained for the branching fractions of rare $\bar{B}^0_d \to \bar{D}^0 \bar{K}^{(*)0}$, $B^-_u \to \bar{D}^0 K^{(*)-}$ and $B^-_u \to D^- \bar{K}^{(*)0}$ transitions.

Lepton Mass Matrices with Four Texture Zeros

We propose two ans$\rm\ddot{a}$tze of lepton mass matrices with four texture zeros, and confront them with current experimental data on neutrino oscillations. The parameter space of each ansatz is carefully explored. We find that both ans$\rm\ddot{a}$tze can accommodate the normal hierarchy of neutrino masses and the bi-large pattern of lepton flavor mixing. Their predictions for the effective mass of the tritium beta decay and that of the neutrinoless double beta decay are too small to be detectable, but leptonic CP violation at the percent level is allowed. Some discussions are also given about the seesaw invariance of the four-zero texture of Dirac and Majorana neutrino mass matrices.

The Majorana Neutrino Mass Matrix with One Texture Zero and One Vanishing Eigenvalue

Possible patterns of the Majorana neutrino mass matrix $M$ with one texture zero and one vanishing eigenvalue are classified and discussed. We find that three one-zero textures of $M$ with $m_1 =0$ and four one-zero textures of $M$ with $m_3 =0$ are compatible with current neutrino oscillation data. The implications of these phenomenological ans$\rm\ddot{a}$tze on the neutrino mass spectrum and the neutrinoless double beta decay are also explored in some detail.

Four-Zero Texture of Hermitian Quark Mass Matrices and Current Experimental Tests

We show that the four-zero texture of Hermitian quark mass matrices can survive current experimental tests: it is able to yield sufficiently large predictions for the flavor mixing parameter $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$ and the CP-violating parameter $\sin 2β$, without fine-tuning of the input values of quark masses, provided the (2,2), (2,3) and (3,3) elements of up and down mass matrices roughly satisfy a geometrical hierarchy. The successful relations $|V_{us}| \approx \sqrt{m_u/m_c + m_d/m_s}$ and $|V_{td}/V_{ts}| \approx \sqrt{m_d/m_s}$ obtained previously from the six-zero texture of Hermitian quark mass matrices remain unchanged in the new ansatz.

Hierarchical Neutrino Masses and Large Mixing Angles from the Fritzsch Texture of Lepton Mass Matrices

We show that the Fritzsch texture of lepton mass matrices can naturally lead to the bi-large flavor mixing pattern, if three neutrinos have a normal but weak mass hierarchy (typically, $m_1 : m_2 : m_3 \sim 1 : 3 :10$). The effective mass of the tritium beta decay and that of the neutrinoless double beta decay are too small to be observable in this ansatz, but CP violation at the percent level is allowed and could be measured in long-baseline neutrino oscillations.

Possible Effects of Noncommutative Geometry on Weak CP Violation and Unitarity Triangles

Possible effects of noncommutative geometry on weak CP violation and unitarity triangles are discussed by taking account of a simple version of the momentum-dependent quark mixing matrix in the noncommutative standard model. In particular, we calculate nine rephasing invariants of CP violation and illustrate the noncommutative CP-violating effect in a couple of charged D-meson decays. We also show how inner angles of the deformed unitarity triangles are related to CP-violating asymmetries in some typical B_d and B_s transitions into CP eigenstates. B-meson factories are expected to help probe or constrain noncommutative geometry at low energies in the near future.

Almost Maximal Lepton Mixing with Large T Violation in Neutrino Oscillations and Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

We point out two simple but instructive possibilities to construct the charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices, from which the nearly bi-maximal neutrino mixing with large T violation can naturally emerge. The two lepton mixing scenarios are compatible very well with current experimental data on solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations, and one of them may lead to an observable T-violating asymmetry between ν_μ--> ν_e and ν_e --> ν_μtransitions in the long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. Their implications on the neutrinoless double beta decay are also discussed.

Bounds on \sin 2βand |V_{ub}/V_{cb}| from the Light-Quark Triangle

With the help of the light-quark triangle, which is essentially congruent to the rescaled unitarity triangle for a variety of textures of the quark mass matrices, we calculate the CP-violating quantity \sin 2βand the ratio of |V_{ub}| to |V_{cb}|. We find that \sin 2βis most likely to lie in the range 0.45 \leq \sin 2β\leq 0.60, a result compatible very well with the present BaBar and Belle measurements. On the other hand, |V_{ub}/V_{cb}| \geq 0.8 is disfavored. Our bounds on both \sin 2βand |V_{ub}/V_{cb}| can soon be confronted with more precise data to be accumulated from the asymmetric B-meson factories.

Fake CPT Violation in Disappearance Neutrino Oscillations

We make an analysis of the fake CPT-violating asymmetries between the survival probabilities of neutrinos and antineutrinos, induced by the terrestrial matter effects, in three different scenarios of long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments with L=730 km, L=2100 km and L=3200 km. In particular, the dependence of those asymmetries on the Dirac-type CP-violating phase of the lepton flavor mixing matrix is examined.

How to Describe Neutrino Mixing and CP Violation

We present a classification of possible parametrizations of the 3x3 lepton flavor mixing matrix in terms of the rotation and phase angles. A particular parametrization, which is most convenient to describe the observables of neutrino oscillations and that of the neutrinoless double beta decay, is studied in detail. The possibility to determine the Dirac- and Majorana-type CP-violating phases are also discussed.

More Straightforward Extraction of the Fundamental Lepton Mixing Parameters from Long-Baseline Neutrino Oscillations

We point out the simple reversibility between the fundamental neutrino mixing parameters in vacuum and their effective counterparts in matter. The former can therefore be expressed in terms of the latter, allowing more straightforward extraction of the genuine lepton mixing quantities from a variety of long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. In addition to the parametrization-independent results, we present the formulas based on the standard parametrization of the lepton flavor mixing matrix and give a typical numerical illustration.

Noncommutativity of Lepton Mass Matrices: Flavor Mixing and CP Violation

I follow a lesson learnt from Heisenberg's matrix Quantum Mechanics to study the property of lepton flavor mixing and CP violation. I show that the commutator of lepton mass matrices defined in vacuum keeps invariant under terrestrial matter effects within the four-neutrino mixing scheme. A set of model-independent sum rules for neutrino masses are obtained, and they can be generalized to hold for an arbitrary number of neutrino families. Useful sum rules for the rephasing-invariant measures of leptonic CP violation have also been found. Finally I present a generic formula of T-violating asymmetries applicable to the future long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments.

Possible Implications of Small or Large CP Violation in B^0_d vs \bar{B}^0_d --> J/ψK_S Decays

We argue that a small or large CP-violating asymmetry {\cal A}_{ψK_S} in B^0_d vs \bar{B}^0_d --> J/ψK_S decays, which seems to be favored by the recent BaBar or Belle data, might hint at the existence of new physics in B^0_d - \bar{B}^0_d mixing. We present a model-independent framework to show how new physics in B^0_d - \bar{B}^0_d mixing modifies the standard-model CP-violating asymmetry {\cal A}^{\rm SM}_{ψK_S}. We particularly emphasize that an experimental confirmation of {\cal A}_{ψK_S} \approx {\cal A}^{\rm SM}_{ψK_S} must not imply the absence of new physics in B^0_d - \bar{B}^0_d mixing.

Mass and Flavor Mixing Schemes of Quarks and Leptons

We give an overview of recent progress in the study of fermion mass and flavor mixing phenomena. The hints exhibited by the quark and lepton mass spectra towards possible underlying flavor symmetries, from which realistic models of mass generation could be built, are emphasized. A variety of schemes of quark mass matrices at low and superhigh energy scales are described, and their consequences on flavor mixing and CP violation are discussed. Instructive patterns of lepton mass matrices, which can naturally lead to large flavor mixing angles, are explored to interpret current data on atmospheric and solar neutrino oscillations. We expect that B-meson factories and long-baseline neutrino experiments will soon shed more light on the dynamics of fermion masses, flavor mixing and CP violation.

The Light Quark Sector, CP Violation, and the Unitarity Triangle

In view of the observed strong hierarchy of quark masses, we propose a new description of flavor mixing which is particularly suited for models of quark mass matrices based on flavor symmetries. The necessary and sufficient conditions for CP violation are clarified. The emergence of CP violation is primarily linked to a large phase difference (near 90^{\circ}) in the light quark sector. The unitarity triangle is determined by the mass ratios of the light quarks. We conclude that the unitarity triangle should be close or identical to a rectangular triangle, and CP violation is maximal in this sense. Instructive predictions for flavor mixing angles and CP-violating parameters, which can directly be confronted with the forthcoming data from B-meson factories, are obtained from a specific texture of quark mass matrices.

CP-violating Signals in the First-round Experiments of a B-meson Factory

Determination of the characteristic CP-violating quantity \sin (2β) should be the central goal of a B-meson factory in its first-round experiments. Except the gold-plated channels B_d\to ψK_S and ψK_L, three other types of B_d decays to CP eigenstates can also serve for the extraction of \sin (2β) in the standard model: (a) the CP-forbidden transitions (B_d\bar{B}_d)_{Υ(4S)} \to (X_c K_S) (X_c K_S) and $(X_c K_L) (X_c K_L), where X_c = ψ, ψ', η_c, etc; (b) the decay modes B_d\to D^{(*)+}D^{(*)-} and D^{(*)0}\bar{D}^{(*)0}, whose amplitudes have simple isospin relations; and (c) the decay modes B_d\to (f_{CP})_D + (π^0, ρ^0, a^0_1, etc), in which f_{CP} is a CP eigenstate (such as π^+π^-, K^+K^- or K_S π^0) arising from either D^0 or \bar{D}^0 in the neglect of D^0-\bar{D}^0 mixing. We carry out an analysis of the CP-violating signals existing in these typical processes, without loss of the possibility that new physics might significantly affect B^0_d-\bar{B}^0_d or K^0-\bar{K}^0 mixing. We also show that the magnitude of \sin (2β) can be well determined, in terms of only |V_{us}|, m_d/m_s and m_u/m_c, from a variety of quark mass ansatze.

Possible Signals of D^0-\bar{D}^0 Mixing and CP Violation

In view of the discovery potential associated with the future experiments of high-luminosity fixed target facilities, B-meson factories and τ-charm factories, we highlight some typical signals of D^0-\bar{D}^0 mixing and CP violation which are likely to show up in neutral D-meson decays to the semileptonic final states, the hadronic CP eigenstates, the hadronic non-CP eigenstates and the CP-forbidden states. Both time-dependent and time-integrated measurements are discussed, and particular interest is paid to D^0/\bar{D}^0 \to K_{S,L}+π^0 and D^0/\bar{D}^0\to K^{\pm}π^{\mp} transitions.

Towards Determining ϕ_1 with B\to D^(*)\bar{D}^(*)

We present an isospin analysis of the decay modes B\to D\bar{D}, D^*\bar{D}, D\bar{D}^* and D^*\bar{D}^*, which allows determination of the final-state interaction phases. As these transitions have branching ratios of the order 10^{-4} or larger, they could be useful in detecting the CP- violating phase ϕ_1 \equiv \arg (-V^*_{cb} V_{cd} V_{tb} V^*_{td} ) in the first-round experiments of a B-meson factory. The problem of penguin pollution may still be present. Once the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements are known, it is possible to obtain the magnitudes and relative phases of hadronic matrix elements for B\to D^{(*)}\bar{D}^{(*)}. This will in turn lead to some information about the penguin pollution.

Towards Isolation of New Physics in B^0_s-\bar{B}^0_s Mixing

In many extensions of the standard model, new physics is possible to contribute significantly to B^0_s-\bar{B}^0_s mixing. We show that the effect of new physics, both its phase information and its magnitude, can be isolated from measurements of CP asymmetries in the semileptonic B_s transitions and in some nonleptonic B_s decays into hadronic CP eigenstates. We also find that the rates of CP-forbidden decays at the Υ(5S) resonance are not suppressed by the large B_s mass difference, thus they can be used to extract the CP-violating phase of new physics in either B^0_s-\bar{B}^0_s or K^0-\bar{K}^0 mixing.

A String-inspired Ansatz for Quark Masses and Mixing

We propose a simple but realistic pattern of quark mass matrices at the string scale, which can be derived from orbifold models of superstring theory with no use of gauge symmetries. This pattern is left-right symmetric and preserves the structural parallelism between up and down quark sectors. Its phenomenological consequences on flavor mixing and $CP$ violation are confronted with current experiments at the weak scale by use of the renormalization-group equations in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. We find that good agreement is achievable without fine-tuning.

A Time-independent Way to Probe D^0-\bar D^0 Mixing at Tau-charm Factories

$D^0-\bar{D}^0$ mixing leads to the mass and width differences in the mass eigenstates of $D^0$ and $\bar{D}^0$ mesons (measured by parameters $x^{~}_D$ and $y^{~}_D$ respectively), but their magnitudes cannot be reliably predicted by the standard model. We show that it is possible to separately determine $x^{~}_D$ and $y^{~}_D$ through {\it time-integrated} measurements of the dilepton events of coherent $D^0\bar{D}^0$ decays on the $ψ(4.14)$ resonance at a $τ$-charm factory.

D^0 \to K^{\pm}π^{\mp} and CP Violation at a τ-charm Factory

We calculate the time-dependent and time-integrated decay rates of $(D^0\bar{D}^0)\rightarrow (K^{\pm}π^{\mp})(l^{\pm}X^{\mp})$ at the $ψ(3.77)$ and $ψ(4.14)$ resonances. The possibilities to distinguish between the effects of $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ mixing and doubly Cabibbo suppressed decay (DCSD) are illustrated, and the signal of $CP$ violation induced by the interplay of mixing and DCSD is discussed. Ratios of the decay rates of $(D^0\bar{D}^0)\rightarrow (K^{\pm}π^{\mp})(K^{\pm}π^{\mp})$ to that of $(D^0\bar{D}^0)\rightarrow (K^+π^-)(K^-π^+)$ are also recalculated by accommodating $CP$ violation and final-state interactions.

Effect of $K^{0}-\bar{K}^{0}$ Mixing on $CP$ Asymmetries in Weak Decays of $D$ and $B$ Mesons

Within the standard electroweak model we carry out an instructive analysis of the effect of $K^{0}-\bar{K}^{0}$ mixing on $CP$ asymmetries in some weak decay modes of $D^{\pm}$ and $\stackrel{(-)}{B}$$^{0}_{d}$ mesons. We point out that a clean signal of $CP$ violation with magnitude of 2Re($ε$) $\approx 3.3\times 10^{-3}$ can manifest in the semileptonic decays $D^{+}\rightarrow l^{+}ν^{~}_{l}K_{S}$ ($K_{L}$) vs $D^{-}\rightarrow l^{-}\barν^{~}_{l}K_{S}$ ($K_{L}$). The $CP$ asymmetries are also dominated by 2Re($ε$) in the two-body nonleptonic decays $D^{\pm} \rightarrow (π^{\pm}, ρ^{\pm}, a^{\pm}_{1})+ (K_{S}, K_{L})$ and in the multi-body processes $D^{\pm}\rightarrow π^{\pm}+n_{0}π^{0}+n_{\pm} (π^{\pm}π^{\mp})+ (K_{S}, K_{L})$, where $n_{0}$ and $n_{\pm}$ are integers. It is possible to observe such $CP$-violating signals with about $10^{7}$ $D^{\pm}$ events at $τ$-charm factories or hadron machines. Finally we show that the $CP$ asymmetry induced by Re($ε$) may compete with those from $B^{0}_{d}-\bar{B}^{0}_{d}$ mixing and final-state interactions in the semi-inclusive and exclusive decays $B_{d}\rightarrow X(c\bar{c})+(K_{S}, K_{L})$ on the $Υ(4S)$ resonance.

Effect of the Space-like Penguin Diagrams on CP Asymmetries in Exclusive B Decays

The space-like penguin contributions were ignored on little ground in many previous studies of nonleptonic B decays and CP violation. Taking the penguin-dominated channels $B^{-} _{u}\rightarrow \bar{K}^{0}π$ and $B^{-}_{u}\rightarrow K^{0} K^{-}$ for example, we illustrate the non-negligible effects of the space-like penguin diagrams on CP asymmetries. On Testing Unitarity of the Quark Mixing Matrix

Unitarity triangles and characteristic measurables of the $3\times 3$ Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix are discussed. Beyond the $3\times 3$ CKM scheme we make a rephasing-invariant generalization of the Gronau-Wyler-Dunietz approach to determine the weak phase shift in $B^{\pm}_u\rightarrow D K^{\pm}$ or $B^0_d\rightarrow D K^{*0}$ vs $\bar{B}^0_d\rightarrow D \bar{K}^{*0}$, which is only sensitive to the underlying new physics in $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ mixing. We also show that the weak angle $γ\equiv \arg (-V^*_{ub}V^*_{cd}V_{ud}V_{cb})$ is possible to be determined from the $CP$ asymmetries of some $B_d$ decays, even in a non-standard model with an extended quark sector. Brief comments are given on tests of unitarity of the $3\times 3$ CKM matrix.

Possible Effects of $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ Mixing in Weak $B$ Decays

$D^0-\bar{D}^0$ mixing at a detectable level requires the presence of new physics and may lead to some observable effects in weak decays of $B$ mesons. We show that $CP$ violation induced by $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ mixing can manifest itself in the decay-rate asymmetry of $B^+_u\rightarrow D_{L(H)}l^+ν^{~}_l$ vs $B^-_u\rightarrow D_{L(H)}l^-\barν^{~}_l$. A rephasing-invariant generalization of the Gronau-Wyler approach is made to determine the weak phase shift in $B^{\pm}_u\rightarrow D_{L(H)}K^{\pm}$, which is only sensitive to the underlying new physics in $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ mixing. We also demonstrate the possible effect of $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ mixing on $CP$ violation in decay modes of the type $B_d\rightarrow D_{L(H)}+(π^0, ρ^0, {\rm etc})$. Finally the model of four quark families is taken as an example to illustrate how the new physics affects $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ mixing, $B^0_d-\bar{B}^0_d$ mixing and $CP$ asymmetries in the relevant $B$ decays.

To lowest-order weak interactions in the standard model, we point out that a complete graph description of two-body mesonic $B$ (or $D$) decays needs ten topologically different quark diagrams. The two-body baryonic $B$ decays can be illustrated in terms of five diagrams. We remark a variety of features of the graph language. A generic formalism is presented for the time-dependent or time-integrated decays of any coherent $P^{0}\bar{P}^{0}$ system ($P^{0} = K^{0}, D^{0}, B^{0}_{d}$, or $B^{0}_{s}$). To meet various possible measurements at asymmetric $B$ factories, we reanalyze some typical signals of CP violation in the coherent $B^{0}_{d}\bar{B}^ {0}_{d}$ transitions. The advantage of proper time cuts is illustrated for measuring mixing parameters and CP violation. Wolfenstein Parametrization Re-examined

The Wolfenstein parametrization of the $3\times 3$ Kobayashi-Maskawa (KM) matrix $V$ is modified by keeping its unitarity up to the accuracy of $O(λ^{6})$. This modification can self-consistently lead to the off-diagonal asymmetry of $V$: $|V_{ij}|^{2}-|V_{ji}|^{2}$ = $Z\displaystyle\sum_{k}ε^{~}_{ijk}$ with $Z=\approx A^{2}λ^{6} (1-2ρ)$, which is comparable in magnitude with the Jarlskog parameter of $CP$ violation $J\approx A^{2}λ^{6}η$. A Further Study of $CP$ Asymmetries in Pure Penguin-induced $B^{\pm}_{u}$ Decays

Different from the previous results obtained without QCD corrections, the $CP$ asymmetries in each of the two groups are enhanced and classified with their respective factorization coefficients. Effect of Hairpin Diagram on Two-body Nonleptonic B Decays and CP Violation

A careful quark-diagram analysis shows that a number of two-body nonleptonic $B$ decays can occur through the so-called hairpin diagram, a QCD loop-induced graph different from penguin in final-state hadronization of valence quarks. Using the two-loop renormalization-group-improved effective Hamiltonian and the naive factorization approximation, we demonstrate the effect of the hairpin diagram on decay rates and $CP$ asymmetries for a few interesting channels such as $B^{0}_{d},\bar{B}^{0}_{d} \rightarrow ψK_{S}$ and $B^{\pm}_{u}\rightarrow ϕK^{\pm}$. Branching ratios of some pure hairpin decay modes, e.g., $B^{-}_{u}\rightarrow ϕπ^{-},ϕρ^{-}$ and $\bar{B}^{0}_{d}\rightarrow ϕπ^{0},ϕρ^{0}, ϕω, ϕη,$ etc., are estimated to be on the order of $10^{-7}$.
