High magnetic field phase diagram and weak FM breaking in (Ni0.93Co0.07)3V2O8

We present magnetostriction and thermal expansion measurements on multiferroic (Ni0.93Co0.07)3V2O8. The high field phase diagrams up to 33 T along the a, b and c directions are built. For H//a, as the magnetic field increases, two intermediate phases appear between the incommensurate phase and the paramagnetic phase at about 7 K, and then a magnetically induced phase appears above the paramagnetic phase. For H//b,thermal expansion measurement indicates a mutation in the spin lattice coupling of the high field phases. The interlaced phase boundary suggests a mixed state in the optical high field phase. For H//c, an intermediate phase between the commensurate phase and the incommensurate phase is detected. A nonlinear boundary between the intermediate phase and the low temperature incommensurate phase, and a clear boundary between the commensurate phase and the paramagnetic phase are found. These results indicate that doping Co2+ breaks the weak ferromagnetic moment of the commensurate phase, which exists in the parent compound Ni3V2O8 and (Ni0.9Co0.1)3V2O8. This nonlinear influence reflects complicated spin modulation in Ni3V2O8 by doping Co2+.

A disorder-sensitive emergent vortex phase identified in high-Tc superconductor (Li,Fe)OHFeSe

The magneto-transport properties are systematically measured under c-direction fields up to 33 T for a series of single-crystal films of intercalated iron-selenide superconductor (Li,Fe)OHFeSe. The film samples with varying degree of disorder are grown hydrothermally. We observe a magnetic-field-enhanced shoulder-like feature in the mixed state of the high-Tc (Li,Fe)OHFeSe films with weak disorder, while the feature fades away in the films with enhanced disorder. The irreversibility field is significantly suppressed to lower temperatures with the appearance of the shoulder feature. Based on the experiment and model analysis, we establish a new vortex phase diagram for the weakly disordered high-Tc (Li,Fe)OHFeSe, which features an emergent dissipative vortex phase intermediate between the common vortex glass and liquid phases. The reason for the emergence of this intermediate vortex state is further discussed based on related experiments and models.

A phase transition driven by subtle distortion without broken symmetry on spin, charge and lattice in Layered LnCu4-δP2(Ln=Eu, Sr)

In the scenario of Landau phase transition theory in condensed matter physics, any thermal dynamic phase transition must be subject to some kind of broken symmetries, that are relative to its spin, charge, orbital and lattice. Here we report a rare phase transition at Tp ~120 K or 140 K in layered materials LnCu4-δP2 (Ln=Eu, Sr) driven by a subtle structural-distortion without any broken symmetry on charge, spin and lattice. The variations of the lattice parameters, (ΔLc/Lc) ~ 0.013% or 0.062%, verified by thermal expansion, is much less than that for a typical crystalline phase transition (~0.5-1%), but the significant anomaly in heat capacity provides clear evidence of its intrinsic nature of thermodynamic transition.

On the anisotropies of magnetization and electronic transport of magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2

Co3Sn2S2, a quasi-two-dimensional system with kagome lattice, has been found as a magnetic Weyl semimetal recently. In this work, the anisotropies of magnetization and transport properties of Co3Sn2S2 were investigated. The high field measurements reveal a giant magnetocrystalline anisotropy with an out-of-plane saturation field of 0.9 kOe and an in-plane saturation field of 230 kOe at 2 K, showing a magnetocrystalline anisotropy coefficient Ku up to 8.3 * 10^5 J m-3, which indicates that it is extremely difficult to align the small moment of 0.29 μB/Co on the kagome lattice from c axis to ab plane. The out-of-plane angular dependences of Hall conductivity further reveal strong anisotropies in Berry curvature and ferromagnetism, and the vector directions of both are always parallel with each other. For in-plane situation, the longitudinal and transverse measurements for both I parallel a and I perpendicular a cases show that the transport on the kagome lattice is isotropic. These results provide essential understanding on the magnetization and transport behaviors for the magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2.

Magnetoelectric effect and phase transitions in CuO in external magnetic fields

Apart from being so far the only known binary multiferroic compound, CuO has a much higher transition temperature into the multiferroic state, 230 K, than any other known material in which the electric polarization is induced by spontaneous magnetic order, typically lower than 100 K. Although the magnetically induced ferroelectricity of CuO is firmly established, no magnetoelectric effect has been observed so far as direct crosstalk between bulk magnetization and electric polarization counterparts. Here we demonstrate that high magnetic fields of about 50 T are able to suppress the helical modulation of the spins in the multiferroic phase and dramatically affect the electric polarization. Furthermore, just below the spontaneous transition from commensurate (paraelectric) to incommensurate (ferroelectric) structures at 213 K, even modest magnetic fields induce a transition into the incommensurate structure and then suppress it at higher field. Thus, remarkable hidden magnetoelectric features are uncovered, establishing CuO as prototype multiferroic with abundance of competitive magnetic interactions.

Acoustic signatures of the phases and phase transitions in Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

We report on measurements of the sound velocity and attenuation in a single crystal of the candidate quantum- spin-ice material Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The acoustic modes couple to the spins magneto-elastically and, hence, carry information about the spin correlations that sheds light on the intricate magnetic phase diagram of Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and the nature of spin dynamics in the material. Particularly, we find a pronounced thermal hysteresis in the acoustic data with a concomitant peak in the specific heat indicating a possible first-order phase transition at about $0.17$ K. At low temperatures, the acoustic response to magnetic field saturates hinting at the development of magnetic order. Furthermore, mean-field calculations suggest that Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ undergoes a first-order phase transition from a cooperative paramagnetic phase to a ferromagnet below $T\approx 0.17$ K.

Vortex creep and critical current densities in superconducting (Ba,K)Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals

The surprisingly rapid relaxation of the sustainable current density in the critical state of single crystalline Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is investigated for magnetic fields oriented parallel to the c-axis and to the $ab$--plane respectively. Due to the inadequacy of standard analysis procedures developed for flux creep in the high temperature superconducting cuprates, we develop a simple, straightforward data treatment technique that reveals the creep mechanism and the creep exponent $μ$. At low magnetic fields, below the second magnetization peak, $μ$ varies only slightly as function of temperature and magnetic flux density $B$. From the data, we determine the temperature- and field dependence of the effective activation barrier for creep. At low temperatures, the measured current density approaches the zero--temperature critical current density (in the absence of creep) to within a factor 2, thus lending credence to earlier conclusions drawn with respect to the pinning mechanism. The comparable values of the experimental screening current density and the zero-temperature critical current density reveals the limited usefulness of the widely used "interpolation formula".

Flux-dynamics associated with the Second Magnetisation Peak in iron-pnictide Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2

We report on isofield magnetic relaxation data on a single crystal of $Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2$ with superconducting transition temperature $T_c$= 32.7 K which exhibit the so called fish-tail effect. A surface map of the superconducting transition temperature shows that the superconducting properties are close to homogeneous across the sample. Magnetic relaxation data, M(t), was used to obtain the activation energy U(M) in order to study different vortex dynamics regimes. Results of this analysis along with time dependent measurements as a function of field and temperature extended to the reversible region of some M(H) curves demonstrate that the irreversibility as well the second magnetization peak position, $H_p(T)$, are time dependent and controlled by plastic motion of the vortex state. In the region delimited by a characteristic field Hon (well below $H_p$), and $H_p$, the vortex dynamics is controlled by collective pinning. For fields below Hon the activation energy, $U_0$, increases with field as expected for collective pinning, but the pinning mechanism is likely to be in the single vortex limit.

Flux dynamics and vortex phase diagram in $Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2$ single crystals revealed by magnetization and its relaxation

Magnetization and its relaxation have been measured in $Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2$ single crystals at various doping levels ranging fromvery underdoped to very overdoped regimes. Sizable magnetization relaxation rate has been observed in all samples, indicating a moderate vortex motion and relatively small characteristic pinning energy. Detailed analysis leads to the following conclusions: (1) A prominent second-peak (SP) effect was observed in the samples around the optimal doping level (x $\approx$ 0.08), but it becomes invisible or very weak in the very underdoped and overdoped samples; (2) The magnetization relaxation rate is inversely related to the transient superconducting current density revealing the non-monotonic field and temperature dependence through the SP region; (3) A very sharp magnetization peak was observed near zero field which corresponds to a much reduced relaxation rate; (4) A weak temperature dependence of relaxation rate or a plateau was found in the intermediate temperature region. Together with the treatment of the Generalized-Inversion-Scheme, we suggest that the vortex dynamics is describable by the collective pinning model. Finally, vortex phase diagrams were drawn for all the samples showing a systematic evolution of vortex dynamics.

Impurity Scattering Effect on Superconductivity and the Violation of Anderson Theorem in Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2 Single Crystals

Low-temperature specific heat (SH) and resistivity were measured on Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2 single crystals in wide doping region. A sizeable residual specific heat coefficient γ_0 was observed in the low temperature limit of all samples. The specific heat jump near T_c, i.e. ΔC/T|_{T_c} and the upper critical field H_{c2}^c (H||c) were also determined. It is found that -γ_0, ΔC/T|_{T_c}, \sqrt{H_{c2}^c} and T_c all shared a similar evolution with doping. All these can be well understood within the model of S$^\pm$ pairing symmetry when accounting the Co-dopants as unitary scattering centers in the FeAs planes. Our results give a direct evidence for the violation of the Anderson theorem in FeAs-based superconductors.

Role of multiband effects and electron-hole asymmetry in the superconductivity and normal state properties of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$

We report a systematic investigation, together with a theoretical analysis, of the resistivity and Hall effect in single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$, over a wide doping range. We find a surprisingly great disparity between the relaxation rates of the holes and the electrons, in excess of an order of magnitude in the low-doping, low-temperature regime. The ratio of the electron to hole mobilities diminishes with temperature and doping (away from the magnetically ordered state) and becomes more conventional. We also find a straightforward explanation of the large asymmetry (compared to cuprates) of the superconducting dome: in the underdoped regime the decisive factor is the competition between AF and superconductivity (SC), while in the overdoped regime the main role is played by degradation of the nesting that weakens the pairing interaction. Our results indicate that spin-fluctuations due to interband electron-hole scattering play a crucial role not only in the superconducting pairing, but also in the normal transport.
