Spin-polarized imaging of strongly interacting fermions in the ferrimagnetic state of Weyl candidate CeBi

CeBi has an intricate magnetic phase diagram whose fully-polarized state has recently been suggested as a Weyl semimetal, though the role of $f$ states in promoting strong interactions has remained elusive. Here we focus on the less-studied, but also time-reversal symmetry-breaking ferrimagnetic phase of CeBi, where our density functional theory (DFT) calculations predict additional Weyl nodes near the Fermi level $E_\mathrm{F}$. We use spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to image the surface ferrimagnetic order on the itinerant Bi $p$ states, indicating their orbital hybridization with localized Ce $f$ states. We observe suppression of this spin-polarized signature at $E_\mathrm{F}$, coincident with a Fano line shape in the conductance spectra, suggesting the Bi $p$ states partially Kondo screen the $f$ magnetic moments, and this $p-f$ hybridization causes strong Fermi-level band renormalization. The $p$ band flattening is supported by our quasiparticle interference (QPI) measurements, which also show band splitting in agreement with DFT, painting a consistent picture of a strongly interacting magnetic Weyl semimetal.

Prediction of Spin Polarized Fermi Arcs in Quasiparticle Interference of CeBi

We predict that CeBi in the ferromagnetic state is a Weyl semimetal. Our calculations within density functional theory show the existence of two pairs of Weyl nodes on the momentum path $(0, 0, k_z)$ at $15$ meV} above and $100$ meV below the Fermi level. Two corresponding Fermi arcs are obtained on surfaces of mirror-symmetric (010)-oriented slabs at $E=15$ meV and both arcs are interrupted into three segments due to hybridization with a set of trivial surface bands. By studying the spin texture of surface states, we find the two Fermi arcs are strongly spin-polarized but in opposite directions, which can be detected by spin-polarized ARPES measurements. Our theoretical study of quasiparticle interference (QPI) for a nonmagnetic impurity at the Bi site also reveals several features related to the Fermi arcs. Specifically, we predict that the spin polarization of the Fermi arcs leads to a bifurcation-shaped feature only in the spin-dependent QPI spectrum, serving as a fingerprint of the Weyl nodes.

Josephson radiation from nonlinear dynamics of Majorana zero modes

Josephson radiation is a powerful method to probe Majorana zero modes in topological superconductors. Recently, Josephson radiation with half the Josephson frequency has been experimentally observed in a HgTe-based junction, possibly from Majorana zero modes. However, this radiation vanishes above a critical voltage, sharply contradicting previous theoretical results. In this work, we theoretically obtain a radiation spectrum quantitatively in agreement with the experiment after including the nonlinear dynamics of the Majorana states into the standard resistively shunted junction model. We further predict two new structures of the radiation spectrum for future experimental verification: an interrupted emission line and a chaotic regime. We develop a fixed-point analysis to understand all these features. Our results resolve an apparent discrepancy between theory and experiments, and will inspire reexamination of structures in radiation spectra of various topological Josephson junctions.

Fractional Flux Plateau in Magnetization Curve of Multicomponent Superconductor Loop

Time-reversal symmetry (TRS) may be broken in superconductors with three or more condensates interacting repulsively, yielding two degenerate states specified by chirality of gap functions. We consider a loop of such superconductor with two halves occupied by the two states with opposite chiralities. Fractional flux plateaus are found in magnetization curve associated with free-energy minima, where the two domain walls between the two halves accommodate different inter-component phase kinks leading to finite winding numbers in a part of the whole condensates around the loop. Fractional flux plateaus form pairs with their heights related to the flux quantum Φ0 = hc/2e. This phenomenon is a clear evidence of time-reversal symmetry broken (TRSB) superconductivity, which in a general point of view provides a novel chance to explore relative phase difference, phase kink and soliton in ubiquitous multi-component superconductivity such as that in iron pnicitides.

Vortices with Fractional Flux Quanta in Multi-Band Superconductors

In superconductors with three or more components, time-reversal symmetry may be broken when the inter-component couplings are repulsive, leading to a superconducting state with two-fold degeneracy. When prepared carefully there is a stable domain wall on a constriction which connects two bulks in states with opposite chiralities. Applying on external magnetic field, vortices in different components dissociate with each other, resulting in a ribbon shape distribution of magnetic field at the position of domain wall.

Josephson Effects in Three-Band Superconductors with Broken Time-Reversal Symmetry

In superconductors with three or more bands, time-reversal symmetry (TRS) may be broken in the presence of repulsive interband couplings, resulting in a pair of degenerate states characterized by opposite chiralities. We consider a Josephson junction between a three-band superconductor with broken TRS and a single-band superconductor. Phenomena such as asymmetric critical currents, subharmonic Shapiro steps and symmetric Fraunhhofer patterns are revealed theoretically. Existing experimental results are discussed in terms of the present work.
