General parametrization of higher-dimensional black holes and its application to Einstein-Lovelock theory

Here we have developed the general parametrization for spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat black-hole spacetimes in an arbitrary metric theory of gravity. The parametrization is similar in spirit to the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) approximation, but valid in the whole space outside the event horizon, including the near horizon region. This generalizes the continued-fraction expansion method in terms of a compact radial coordinate suggested by Rezzolla and Zhidenko [Phys.Rev.D 90 8, 084009 (2014)] for the four-dimensional case. As the first application of our higher-dimensional parametrization we have approximated black-hole solutions of the Einstein-Lovelock theory in various dimensions. This allows one to write down the black-hole solution which depends on many parameters (coupling constants in front of higher curvature terms) in a very compact analytic form, which depends only upon a few parameters of the parametrization. The approximate metric deviates from the exact (but extremely cumbersome) expressions by fractions of one percent even at the first order of the continued-fraction expansion, which is confirmed here by computation of observable quantities, such as quasinormal modes of the black hole.

Dynamical instability of polytropic spheres in spacetimes with a cosmological constant

The dynamical instability of relativistic polytropic spheres, embedded in a spacetime with a repulsive cosmological constant, is studied in the framework of general relativity. We apply the methods used in our preceding paper to study the trapping polytropic spheres with $Λ= 0$, namely, the critical point method and the infinitesimal and adiabatic radial perturbations method developed by Chandrasekhar. We compute numerically the critical adiabatic index, as a function of the parameter $σ= p_{\mathrm{c}}/(ρ_{\mathrm{c}} c^2)$, for several values of the cosmological parameter $λ$ giving the ratio of the vacuum energy density to the central energy density of the polytrope. We also determine the critical values for the parameter $σ_{\mathrm{cr}}$, for the onset of instability, by using both approaches. We found that for large values of the parameter $λ$, the differences between the values of $σ_{\mathrm{cr}}$ calculated by the critical point method differ from those obtained via the radial perturbations method. Our results, given by both applied methods, indicate that large values of the cosmological parameter $λ$ have relevant effects on the dynamical stability of the polytropic configurations.

Particle motion and collisions around rotating regular black hole

The neutral particle motion around rotating regular black hole that was derived from the Ayón-Beato-García black hole solution by the Newman-Janis algorithm in the preceding paper [Phys. Rev. D 89, 104017, (2014)] has been studied. The dependencies of the ISCO (innermost stable circular orbits along geodesics) and unstable orbits on the value of the electric charge of the rotating regular black hole have been shown. Energy extraction from the rotating regular black hole through various processes has been examined. We have found expression of the center of mass energy for the colliding neutral particles coming from infinity, based on the BSW (Baňados-Silk-West) mechanism. The electric charge $Q$ of rotating regular black hole decreases the potential of the gravitational field and the particle needs less bound energy at the circular geodesics. This causes the increase of efficiency of the energy extraction through BSW process in the presence of the electric charge $Q$ from rotating regular black hole. It has been shown that the efficiency of the energy extraction from the rotating regular black hole via the Penrose process decreases with the increase of the electric charge $Q$ and is smaller with compare to 20.7% which is the value for the extreme Kerr black hole with the specific angular momentum $a=1$.
