Weighted inequalities for a superposition of the Copson operator and the Hardy operator

We study a three-weight inequality for the superposition of the Hardy operator and the Copson operator, namely \begin{equation*} \bigg(\int_a^b \bigg(\int_t^b \bigg(\int_a^s f(τ)^p v(τ) \,dτ\bigg)^\frac{q}{p} u(s) \,ds \bigg)^{\frac{r}{q}} w(t) \,dt \bigg)^{\frac{1}{r}} \leq C \int_a^b f(t)\,dt, \end{equation*} in which $(a,b)$ is any nontrivial interval, $q,r$ are positive real parameters and $p\in(0,1]$. A simple change of variables can be used to obtain any weighted $L^p$-norm with $p\ge1$ on the right-hand side. Another simple change of variables can be used to equivalently turn this inequality into the one in which the Hardy and Copson operators swap their positions. We focus on characterizing those triples of weight functions $(u,v,w)$ for which this inequality holds for all nonnegative measurable functions $f$ with a constant independent of $f$. We use a new type of approach based on an innovative method of discretization which enables us to avoid duality techniques and therefore to remove various restrictions that appear in earlier work. This paper is dedicated to Professor Stefan Samko on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

Compactness of Sobolev embeddings and decay of norms

We investigate the relationship between the compactness of embeddings of Sobolev spaces built upon rearrangement-invariant spaces into rearrangement-invariant spaces endowed with $d$-Ahlfors measures under certain restriction on the speed of its decay on balls. We show that the gateway to compactness of such embeddings, while formally describable by means of optimal embeddings and almost-compact embeddings, is quite elusive. It is known that such a Sobolev embedding is not compact when its target space has the optimal fundamental function. We show that, quite surprisingly, such a target space can actually be "fundamentally enlarged", and yet the resulting embedding remains noncompact. In order to do that, we develop two different approaches. One is based on enlarging the optimal target space itself, and the other is based on enlarging the Marcinkiewicz space corresponding to the optimal fundamental function.

Embeddings of homogeneous Sobolev spaces on the entire space

We completely characterize the validity of the inequality $\|u\|_{Y(\mathbb{R}^n)}\leq C \|\nabla^m u\|_{X(\mathbb{R}^n)}$, where $X$ and $Y$ are rearrangement-invariant spaces, by reducing it to a considerably simpler one-dimensional inequality. Furthermore, we fully describe the optimal rearrangement-invariant space on either side of the inequality when the space on the other side is fixed. We also solve the same problem within the environment in which the competing spaces are Orlicz spaces. A variety of examples involving customary function spaces suitable for applications is also provided.

Boundedness of classical operators on rearrangement-invariant spaces

We study the behaviour on rearrangement-invariant spaces of such classical operators of interest in harmonic analysis as the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator (including the fractional version), the Hilbert and Stieltjes transforms, and the Riesz potential. The focus is on sharpness questions, and we present characterisations of the optimal domain (or range) partner spaces when the range (domain) is fixed. When a rearrangement-invariant partner space exists at all, a complete characterisation of the situation is given. We illustrate the results with a variety of examples of sharp particular results involving customary function spaces.
