DeepSeek-R1: Incentivizing Reasoning Capability in LLMs via Reinforcement Learning

General reasoning represents a long-standing and formidable challenge in artificial intelligence. Recent breakthroughs, exemplified by large language models (LLMs) and chain-of-thought prompting, have achieved considerable success on foundational reasoning tasks. However, this success is heavily contingent upon extensive human-annotated demonstrations, and models' capabilities are still insufficient for more complex problems. Here we show that the reasoning abilities of LLMs can be incentivized through pure reinforcement learning (RL), obviating the need for human-labeled reasoning trajectories. The proposed RL framework facilitates the emergent development of advanced reasoning patterns, such as self-reflection, verification, and dynamic strategy adaptation. Consequently, the trained model achieves superior performance on verifiable tasks such as mathematics, coding competitions, and STEM fields, surpassing its counterparts trained via conventional supervised learning on human demonstrations. Moreover, the emergent reasoning patterns exhibited by these large-scale models can be systematically harnessed to guide and enhance the reasoning capabilities of smaller models.

Nucleon-pair truncation of the shell model for medium-heavy nuclei

Background: Computationally tractable models of atomic nuclei is a long-time goal of nuclear structure physics. A flexible framework which easily includes excited states and many-body correlations is the configuration-interaction shell model (SM), but the exponential growth of the basis means one needs an efficient truncation scheme, ideally one that includes both deformation and pairing correlations. Purpose: We propose an efficient truncation scheme of the SM: starting from a pair condensate variationally defined by Hartree-Fock single-particle states and the particle-number conserved Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (NBCS) approximation, we carry out projection of states with good angular momentum. Methods: After generating Hartree-Fock single-particle states with Kramers degeneracy in a SM space, we optimize the pair amplitudes in the NBCS by minimizing the energy, and then use linear algebra projection (LAP) of states with good angular momentum. Both NBCS and LAP are computationally fast. Results: Our calculations yield good agreement with full configuration-interaction SM calculations for low-lying states of transitional and rotational nuclei with axially symmetric and triaxial deformation in medium- and heavy-mass regions: $^{44,46,48}$Ti, $^{48,50}$Cr, $^{52}$Fe, $^{60,62,64}$Zn, $^{66,68}$Ge, $^{68}$Se, and $^{108,110}$Xe. We predict low-lying states of $^{112-114}\textrm{Ba}$ and $^{116-120}\textrm{Ce}$, nuclei difficult to reach by large-scale SM calculations. Conclusions: Both pair correlation and the configuration mixing between different intrinsic states play a key role in reproducing collectivity and shape coexistence, demonstrating the utility of this truncation scheme of the SM to study transitional and deformed nuclei.

Isomerism in the "south-east" of $^{132}$Sn and a predicted neutron-decaying isomer in $^{129}$Pd

Excited states in neutron-rich nuclei located south-east of $^{132}$Sn are investigated by shell-model calculations. A new shell-model Hamiltonian is constructed for the present study. The proton-proton and neutron-neutron interactions of the Hamiltonian are obtained through the existing CD-Bonn $G$ matrix results, while the proton-neutron interaction across two major shells is derived from the monopole based universal interaction plus the M3Y spin-orbit force. The present Hamiltonian can reproduce well the experimental data available in this region, including one-neutron separation energies, level energies and the experimental $B(E2)$ values of isomers in $^{134,136,138}$Sn, $^{130}$Cd, and $^{128}$Pd. New isomers are predicted in this region, $e.g.$ in $^{135}$Sn, $^{131}$Cd, $^{129}$Pd, $^{132,134}$In and $^{130}$Ag, in which almost no excited states are known experimentally yet. In the odd-odd $^{132,134}$In and $^{130}$Ag, the predicted very long $E2$ life-times of the low-lying $5^{-}$ states are discussed, demanding more information on the related proton-neutron interaction. The low-lying states of $^{132}$In are discussed in connection with the recently observed $γ$ rays. The predicted $19/2^{-}$ isomer in $^{129}$Pd could decay by both electromagnetic transitions and neutron emission with comparable partial life-times, making it a good candidate for neutron radioactivity, a decay mode which is yet to be discovered.

Sensitivity of deexcitation energies of superdeformed secondary minima to the density dependence of symmetry energy with the relativistic mean-field theory

The relationship between deexcitation energies of superdeformed secondary minima relative to ground states and the density dependence of the symmetry energy is investigated for heavy nuclei using the relativistic mean field (RMF) model. It is shown that the deexcitation energies of superdeformed secondary minima are sensitive to differences in the symmetry energy that are mimicked by the isoscalar-isovector coupling included in the model. With deliberate investigations on a few Hg isotopes that have data of deexcitation energies, we find that the description for the deexcitation energies can be improved due to the softening of the symmetry energy. Further, we have investigated deexcitation energies of odd-odd heavy nuclei that are nearly independent of pairing correlations, and have discussed the possible extraction of the constraint on the density dependence of the symmetry energy with the measurement of deexcitation energies of these nuclei.

Equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter and collisions of neutron-rich nuclei

The ratio of pre-equilibrium neutrons to protons from collisions of neutron-rich nuclei is studied as a function of their kinetic energies. This ratio is found to be sensitive to the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy, but is independent of the compressibility of symmetric nuclear matter and the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections. The experimental measurement of this ratio thus provides a novel means for determining the nuclear equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter.
