Model for collective motion

Collective motion is a manifestation of emergent phenomena in medium-heavy and heavy nuclei. A relatively large number of constituent nucleons contribute coherently to nuclear excitations (vibrations, rotations) that are characterized by large electromagnetic moments and transition rates. Basic features of collective excitations are reviewed, and a simple model introduced that describes large-amplitude quadrupole and octupole shape dynamics, as well as the dynamics of induced fission. Modern implementations of the collective Hamiltonian model are based on the microscopic framework of energy density functionals, that provide an accurate global description of nuclear ground states and collective excitations. Results of illustrative calculations are discussed in comparison with available data.

Nuclear landscape in a mapped collective Hamiltonian from covariant density functional theory

The nuclear landscape has been investigated within the triaxial relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory with the PC-PK1 density functional, and the beyond-mean-field dynamical correlation energies are taken into account by a microscopically mapped five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian without additional free parameters. The effects of triaxial deformation and dynamical correlations on the nuclear landscape are analyzed. The present results provide the best description of the experimental binding energies, in particular for medium and heavy mass regions, in comparison with the results obtained previously with other state-of-the-art covariant density functionals. The inclusion of the dynamical correlation energies plays an important role in the PC-PK1 results. It is emphasized that the nuclear landscape is considerably extended by the PC-PK1 functional in comparison with the previous results with other density functionals, which may be due to the different isovector properties in the density functionals.

Coupling of shape and pairing vibrations in a collective Hamiltonian based on nuclear energy density functionals

The quadrupole collective Hamiltonian, based on relativistic energy density functionals, is extended to include a pairing collective coordinate. In addition to quadrupole shape vibrations and rotations, the model describes pairing vibrations and the coupling between shape and pairing degrees of freedom. The parameters of the collective Hamiltonian are determined by constrained self-consistent relativistic mean-field plus Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (RMF+BCS) calculations in the space of intrinsic shape and pairing deformations. The effect of coupling between shape and pairing degrees of freedom is analyzed in a study of low-energy spectra and transition rates of four axially symmetric $N=92$ rare-earth isotones. When compared to results obtained with the standard quadrupole collective Hamiltonian, the inclusion of dynamical pairing increases the moment of inertia, lowers the energies of excited $0^+$ states and reduces the E0-transition strengths, in better agreement with data.

Green's function method for the single-particle resonances in a deformed Dirac equation

Single-particle resonances are crucial for exotic nuclei near and beyond the drip lines. Since the majority of nuclei are deformed, the interplay between deformation and orbital structure near threshold becomes very important and can lead to an improved description of exotic nuclei. In this work, the Green's function (GF) method is applied to solve the coupled-channel Dirac equation with quadrupole-deformed Woods-Saxon potentials for the first time. The detailed formalism for the partial-wave expansion of the Green's function is presented. A new approach getting exact values for energies and widths of resonant states by the GF method is proposed. Numerical checks are carried out by comparing with our previous implementation of the spherical GF method and the results from the deformed complex momentum representation~(CMR), the analytical continuation of the coupling constant (ACCC), and the scattering phase shift (SPS) methods, and it is proved that the GF method is very effective and reliably for describing resonance states, no matter they are narrow or broad, spherical or deformed. Finally, Nilsson levels for bound and resonant orbitals in the halo candidate nucleus $^{37}$Mg are calculated from the deformed GF method over a wide range of deformations and some decisive hints of $p$-wave halo formation are shown in this nucleus, namely, the crossing between the configurations $1/2[321]$ and $5/2[312]$ at deformation parameter $β>0.5$ may enhance the probability to occupy the $1/2[321]$ orbital that is originated from the $2p_{3/2}$ shell.

Superheavy nuclei in microscopic collective Hamiltonian approach: the impact of beyond mean field correlations on the ground state and fission properties

The impact of beyond mean field effects on the ground state and fission properties of superheavy nuclei has been investigated in a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian based on covariant density functional theory. The inclusion of dynamical correlations reduces the impact of the $Z=120$ shell closure and induces substantial collectivity for the majority of the $Z=120$ nuclei which otherwise are spherical at the mean field level (as seen in the calculations with the PC-PK1 functional). Thus, they lead to a substantial convergence of the predictions of the functionals DD-PC1 and PC-PK1 which are different at the mean field level. On the contrary, the predictions of these two functionals remain distinctly different for the $N=184$ nuclei even when dynamical correlations are included. These nuclei are mostly spherical (oblate) in the calculations with PC-PK1 (DD-PC1). Our calculations for the first time reveal significant impact of dynamical correlations on the heights of inner fission barriers of superheavy nuclei with soft potential energy surfaces, the minimum of which at the mean field level is located at spherical shape. These correlations affect the fission barriers of the nuclei, which are deformed in the ground state at the mean field level, to a lesser degree.

Beyond relativistic mean-field approach for nuclear octupole excitations

We report the first beyond-mean-field study of low-lying parity-doublet states in 224Ra by extending the multireference relativistic energy density functional method to include dynamical correlations related to symmetry restoration and quadrupole-octupole shape fluctuation with a generator coordinate method combined with parity, particle-number, and angular-momentum projections. We clarify full microscopically that the origin of spin-dependent parity splitting in low-spin states is related to the octupole shape stabilization of positive-parity states, the dominated shapes of which drift gradually to that of negative-parity ones.

Global study of beyond-mean-field correlation energies in covariant energy density functional theory using a collective Hamiltonian method

We report the first global study of dynamic correlation energies (DCEs) associated with rotational motion and quadrupole shape vibrational motion in a covariant energy density functional (CEDF) for 575 even-even nuclei with proton numbers ranging from $Z=8$ to $Z=108$ by solving a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian, the collective parameters of which are determined from triaxial relativistic mean-field plus BCS calculation using the PC-PK1 force. After taking into account these beyond mean-field DCEs, the root-mean-square (rms) deviation with respect to nuclear masses is reduced significantly down to 1.14 MeV, which is smaller than those of other successful CEDFs: NL3* (2.96 MeV), DD-ME2 (2.39 MeV), DD-ME$δ$ (2.29 MeV) and DD-PC1 (2.01 MeV). Moreover, the rms deviation for two-nucleon separation energies is reduced by $\sim34\%$ in comparison with cranking prescription.

Triaxially deformed relativistic point-coupling model for $Λ$ hypernuclei: a quantitative analysis of hyperon impurity effect on nuclear collective properties

The impurity effect of hyperon on atomic nuclei has received a renewed interest in nuclear physics since the first experimental observation of appreciable reduction of $E2$ transition strength in low-lying states of hypernucleus $^{7}_Λ$Li. Many more data on low-lying states of $Λ$ hypernuclei will be measured soon for $sd$-shell nuclei, providing good opportunities to study the $Λ$ impurity effect on nuclear low-energy excitations. We carry out a quantitative analysis of $Λ$ hyperon impurity effect on the low-lying states of $sd$-shell nuclei at the beyond-mean-field level based on a relativistic point-coupling energy density functional (EDF), considering that the $Λ$ hyperon is injected into the lowest positive-parity ($Λ_s$) and negative-parity ($Λ_p$) states. We adopt a triaxially deformed relativistic mean-field (RMF) approach for hypernuclei and calculate the $Λ$ binding energies of hypernuclei as well as the potential energy surfaces (PESs) in $(β, γ)$ deformation plane. We also calculate the PESs for the $Λ$ hypernuclei with good quantum numbers using a microscopic particle rotor model (PRM) with the same relativistic EDF. The triaxially deformed RMF approach is further applied in order to determine the parameters of a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian (5DCH) for the collective excitations of triaxially deformed core nuclei. Taking $^{25,27}_Λ$Mg and $^{31}_Λ$Si as examples, we analyse the impurity effects of $Λ_s$ and $Λ_p$ on the low-lying states of the core nuclei...

A microscopic benchmark-study of triaxiality in low-lying states of 76Kr

We report on a seven-dimensional generator coordinate calculation in the two deformation parameters $β$ and $γ$ together with projection on three-dimensional angular momentum and two particle numbers for the low-lying states in $^{76}$Kr. These calculations are based on covariant density functional theory. Excellent agreement is found with the data for the spectrum and the electric multipole transition strengths. This answers the important question of dynamic correlations and triaxiality in a fully microscopic way. We find that triaxial configurations dominate both the ground state and the quasi $γ$-band. This yields a different picture from the simple interpretation in terms of "coexistence of a prolate ground state with an oblate low-lying excited state", which is based on the measured sign of spectroscopic quadrupole moments. This study also provides for the first time a benchmark for the collective Hamiltonian in five dimensions. Moreover, we point out that the staggering phase of the $γ$-band is not a safe signature for rigid triaxiality of the low-energy structure.

Covariant density functional analysis of shape evolution in $N =40$ isotones

The structure of low-lying excitation states of even-even $N=40$ isotones is studied using a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian with the collective parameters determined from the relativistic mean-field plus BCS method with the PC-PK1 functional in the particle-hole channel and a separable paring force in the particle-particle channel. The theoretical calculations can reproduce not only the systematics of the low-lying states along the isotonic chain but also the detailed structure of the spectroscopy in a single nucleus. We find a picture of spherical-oblate-prolate shape transition along the isotonic chain of $N=40$ by analyzing the potential energy surfaces. The coexistence of low-lying excited $0^+$ states has also been shown to be a common feature in neutron-deficient $N=40$ isotones.

Global dynamical correlation energies in covariant density functional theory: cranking approximation

The global dynamical correlation energies for 575 even-even nuclei with proton numbers ranging from Z=8 to Z=108 calculated with the covariant density functional theory using the PC-PK1 parametrization are presented. The dynamical correlation energies include the rotational correction energies obtained with the cranking approximation and the quadrupole vibrational correction energies. The systematic behavior of the present correlation energies is in good agreement with that obtained from the projected generator coordinate method using the SLy4 Skyrme force although our values are systematically smaller. After including the dynamical correlation energies, the root-mean-square deviation predicted by the PC-PK1 for the 575 even-even nuclei masses is reduced from 2.58 MeV to 1.24 MeV.

Low-energy structure and anti-bubble effect of dynamical correlations in 46Ar

The low-energy structure of 46Ar is of particular interest due to the possible coexistence of different shapes and the possible existence of proton bubble structure. In this work, we apply a beyond relativistic mean-field approach to study the low-energy structure of 46Ar. Correlations beyond the mean field are introduced by configuration mixing of both particle-number and angular-momentum projected axially deformed mean-field states. The low-lying spectroscopy and charge density in laboratory frame are calculated and an excellent agreement with available data is achieved. Even though an evident proton bubble structure is shown in the spherical state of 46Ar, it eventually disappears after taking into account the dynamical correlation effects. Moreover, our results indicate that the existence of proton bubble structure in argon isotopes is unlikely.

Beyond relativistic mean-field studies of low-lying states in neutron-deficient krypton isotopes

Neutron-deficient krypton isotopes are of particular interest due to the coexistence of oblate and prolate shapes in low-lying states and the transition of ground-state from one dominate shape to another as a function of neutron number. A detailed interpretation of these phenomena in neutron-deficient Kr isotopes requires the use of a method going beyond a mean-field approach that permits to determine spectra and transition probabilities. The aim of this work is to provide a systematic calculation of low-lying state in the even-even 68-86Kr isotopes and to understand the shape coexistence phenomenon and the onset of large collectivity around N=40 from beyond relativistic mean-field studies. The starting point of our method is a set of relativistic mean-field+BCS wave functions generated with a constraint on triaxial deformations (beta, gamma). The excitation energies and electric multipole transition strengths of low-lying states are calculated by solving a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian (5DCH) with parameters determined by the mean-field wave functions. To examine the role of triaxiality, a configuration mixing of both particle number (PN) and angular momentum (AM) projected axially deformed states is also carried out within the exact generator coordinate method (GCM) based on the same energy density functional. The energy surfaces, the excitation energies of 0^+_2, 2^+_1, 2^+_2 states, as well as the E0 and E2 transition strengths are compared with the results of similar 5DCH calculations but with parameters determined by the non-relativistic mean-field wave functions, as well as with the available data...

Does a proton "bubble" structure exist in the low-lying states of 34Si?

The possible existence of a "bubble" structure in the proton density of $^{34}$Si has recently attracted a lot of research interest. To examine the existence of the "bubble" structure in low-lying states, we establish a relativistic version of configuration mixing of both particle number and angular momentum projected quadrupole deformed mean-field states and apply this state-of-the-art beyond relativistic mean-field method to study the density distribution of the low-lying states in $^{34}$Si. An excellent agreement with the data of low-spin spectrum and electric multipole transition strengths is achieved without introducing any parameters. We find that the central depression in the proton density is quenched by dynamic quadrupole shape fluctuation, but not as significantly as what has been found in a beyond non-relativistic mean-field study. Our results suggest that the existence of proton "bubble" structure in the low-lying excited $0^+_2$ and $2^+_1$ states is very unlikely.

Effect of pairing correlations on nuclear low-energy structure: BCS and general Bogoliubov transformation

Low-lying nuclear states of Sm isotopes are studied in the framework of a collective Hamiltonian based on covariant energy density functional theory. Pairing correlation are treated by both BCS and Bogoliubov methods. It is found that the pairing correlations deduced from relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) calculations are generally stronger than those by relativistic mean-field plus BCS (RMF+BCS) with same pairing force. By simply renormalizing the pairing strength, the diagonal part of the pairing field is changed in such a way that the essential effects of the off-diagonal parts of the pairing field neglected in the RMF+BCS calculations can be recovered, and consequently the low-energy structure is in a good agreement with the predictions of the RHB model.

Simultaneous quadrupole and octupole shape phase transitions in Thorium

The evolution of quadrupole and octupole shapes in Th isotopes is studied in the framework of nuclear Density Functional Theory. Constrained energy maps and observables calculated with microscopic collective Hamiltonians indicate the occurrence of a simultaneous quantum shape phase transition between spherical and quadrupole-deformed prolate shapes, and between non-octupole and octupole-deformed shapes, as functions of the neutron number. The nucleus $^{224}$Th is closest to the critical point of a double phase transition. A microscopic mechanism of this phenomenon is discussed in terms of the evolution of single-nucleon orbitals with deformation.

An efficient method for computing the Thouless-Valatin inertia parameters

Starting from the adiabatic time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation (ATDHF), we propose an efficient method to calculate the Thouless-Valatin moments of inertia for the nuclear system. The method is based on the rapid convergence of the expansion of the inertia matrix. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified in the rotational case by comparing the results with the exact Thouless-Valatin moments of inertia calculated using the self-consistent cranking model. The proposed method is computationally much more efficient than the full ATDHF calculation, yet it retains a high accuracy of the order of 1%.

Anisotropic magnetoresistance in topological insulator Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.8Se1.2/CoFe heterostructures

Topological insulator is composed of an insulating bulk state and time reversal symmetry protected two-dimensional surface states. One of the characteristics of the surface states is the locking between electron momentum and spin orientation. Here, we report a novel in-plane anisotropic magnetoresistance in topological insulator Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.8Se1.2/CoFe heterostructures. To explain the novel effect, we propose that the Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.8Se1.2/CoFe heterostructure forms a spin-valve or Giant magnetoresistance device due to spin-momentum locking. The novel in-plane anisotropic magnetoresistance can be explained as a Giant magnetoresistance effect of the Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.8Se1.2/CoFe heterostructures.

Collective excitations of $Λ$ hypernuclei

We discuss low-lying collective excitations of $Λ$ hypernuclei using the self-consistent mean-field approaches. We first discuss the deformation properties of $Λ$ hypernuclei in the $sd$-shell region. Based on the relativistic mean-field (RMF) approach, we show that the oblate deformation for $^{28}$Si nucleus may disappear when a $Λ$ particle is added to this nucleus. We then discuss the rotational excitations of $^{25}_Λ$Mg nucleus using the three-dimensional potential energy surface in the deformation plane obtained with the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock method. The deformation of $^{25}_Λ$Mg nucleus is predicted to be slightly reduced due to an addition of $Λ$ particle. We demonstrate that this leads to a reduction of electromagnetic transition probability, $B(E2)$, in the ground state rotational band. We also present an application of random phase approximation (RPA) to hypernuclei, and show that a new dipole mode, which we call a soft dipole $Λ$ mode, appears in hypernuclei, which can be interpreted as an oscillation of $Λ$ particle against the core nucleus.

Energy Density Functional analysis of shape evolution in N=28 isotones

The structure of low-energy collective states in proton-deficient N=28 isotones is analyzed using structure models based on the relativistic energy density functional DD-PC1. The relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model for triaxial nuclei is used to calculate binding energy maps in the $β$-$γ$ plane. The evolution of neutron and proton single-particle levels with quadrupole deformation, and the occurrence of gaps around the Fermi surface, provide a simple microscopic interpretation of the onset of deformation and shape coexistence. Starting from self-consistent constrained energy surfaces calculated with the functional DD-PC1, a collective Hamiltonian for quadrupole vibrations and rotations is employed in the analysis of excitation spectra and transition rates of $^{46}$Ar, $^{44}$S, and $^{42}$Si. The results are compared to available data, and previous studies based either on the mean-field approach or large-scale shell-model calculations. The present study is particularly focused on $^{44}$S, for which data have recently been reported that indicate pronounced shape coexistence.

Enhanced collectivity in neutron-deficient Sn isotopes in energy functional based collective Hamiltonian

The low-lying collective states in Sn isotopes are studied by a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian with parameters determined from the triaxial relativistic mean-field calculations using the PC-PK1 energy density functional. The systematics for both the excitation energies of $2^+_1$ states and $B(E2;0^+_1\to 2^+_1)$ values are reproduced rather well, in particular, the enhanced E2 transitions in the neutron-deficient Sn isotopes with N<66. We show that the gradual degeneracy of neutron levels 1g7/2 and 2d5/2 around the Fermi surface leads to the increase of level density and consequently the enhanced paring correlations from N=66 to 58. It provokes a large quadrupole shape fluctuation around the spherical shape, and leads to an enhanced collectivity in the isotopes around N=58.

Rapid structural change in low-lying states of neutron-rich Sr and Zr isotopes

The rapid structural change in low-lying collective excitation states of neutron-rich Sr and Zr isotopes is tudied by solving a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian with parameters determined by both relativistic mean-field and non-relativistic Skyrme-Hartree-Fock calculations using the PC-PK1 and SLy4 forces respectively. Pair correlations are treated in BCS method with either a separable pairing force or a density-dependent zero-range force. The isotope shifts, excitation energies, electric monopole and quadrupole transition strengths are calculated and compared with corresponding experimental data. The calculated results with both the PC-PK1 and SLy4 forces exhibit a picture of spherical-oblate-prolate shape transition in neutron-rich Sr and Zr isotopes. Compared with the experimental data, the PC-PK1 (or SLy4) force predicts a more moderate (or dramatic) change in most of the collective properties around N=60. The underlying microscopic mechanism responsible for the rapid transition is discussed.

Covariant description of shape evolution and shape coexistence in neutron-rich nuclei at N\approx60

The shape evolution and shape coexistence phenomena in neutron-rich nuclei at $N\approx60$, including Kr, Sr, Zr, and Mo isotopes, are studied in the covariant density functional theory (DFT) with the new parameter set PC-PK1. Pairing correlations are treated using the BCS approximation with a separable pairing force. Sharp rising in the charge radii of Sr and Zr isotopes at N=60 is observed and shown to be related to the rapid changing in nuclear shapes. The shape evolution is moderate in neighboring Kr and Mo isotopes. Similar as the results of previous Hartree-Fock-Bogogliubov (HFB) calculations with the Gogny force, triaxiality is observed in Mo isotopes and shown to be essential to reproduce quantitatively the corresponding charge radii. In addition, the coexistence of prolate and oblate shapes is found in both $^{98}$Sr and $^{100}$Zr. The observed oblate and prolate minima are related to the low single-particle energy level density around the Fermi surfaces of neutron and proton respectively. Furthermore, the 5-dimensional (5D) collective Hamiltonian determined by the calculations of the PC-PK1 energy functional is solved for $^{98}$Sr and $^{100}$Zr. The resultant excitation energy of $0^+_2$ state and E0 transition strength $ρ^2(E0;0^+_2\rightarrow0^+_1)$ are in rather good agreement with the data. It is found that the lower barrier height separating the two competing minima along the $γ$ deformation in $^{100}$Zr gives rise to the larger $ρ^2(E0;0^+_2\rightarrow0^+_1)$ than that in $^{98}$Sr.

Impurity effect of $Λ$ hyperon on shape-coexistence nucleus $^{44}$S in the energy functional based collective Hamiltonian

The non-relativistic Skyrme energy density functional (EDF) based collective Hamiltonian, that takes into account dynamical correlations related to the restoration of broken symmetries and fluctuations of quadrupole collective variables, is applied to quantitatively study the impurity effect of $Λ$ hyperon on the collectivity of $^{44}$S. Several Skyrme forces for both the nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) and $Λ$-nucleon ($ΛN$) interactions are used. The influence of pairing strengths on the polarization effect of $Λ$ hyperon is also examined. It is found that although these Skyrme forces with different pairing strengths give somewhat different low-lying spectra for $^{44}$S, all of them give similar and generally small size of $Λ$ reduction effect (within 5%) on the collective properties.

Impurity effect of Lambda hyperon on collective excitations of atomic nuclei

Taking the ground state rotational band in $^{24}$Mg as an example, we investigate the impurity effect of $Λ$ hyperon on collective excitations of atomic nuclei in the framework of non-relativistic energy density functional theory. To this end, we take into account correlations related to the restoration of broken symmetries and fluctuations of collective variables by solving the eigenvalue problem of a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian for quadrupole vibrational and rotational degrees of freedom. The parameters of the collective Hamiltonian are determined with constrained mean-field calculations for triaxial shapes using the SGII Skyrme force. We compare the low-spin spectrum for $^{24}$Mg with the spectrum for the same nucleus inside $^{25}_Λ$Mg. It is found that the $Λ$ hyperon stretches the ground state band and reduces the $B(E2:2^+_1 \rightarrow 0^+_1)$ value by $\sim 9%$, mainly by softening the potential energy surface towards the spherical shape, even though the shrinkage effect on the average proton radius is only $\sim0.5%$.

Microscopic Description of Spherical to Gamma-Soft Shape Transitions in Ba and Xe Nuclei

The rapid transition between spherical and $γ$-soft shapes in Ba and Xe nuclei in the mass region $A \geq 130$ is analyzed using excitation spectra and collective wave functions obtained by diagonalization of a five-dimensional Hamiltonian for quadrupole vibrational and rotational degrees of freedom, with parameters determined by constrained self-consistent relativistic mean-field calculations for triaxial shapes. The results reproduce the characteristic evolution of excitation spectra and E2 transition probabilities and, in general, a good agreement with available data is obtained. The calculated spectra display fingerprints of a second-order shape phase transition that can approximately be described by analytic solutions corresponding to the E(5) dynamical symmetry.

New parametrization for the nuclear covariant energy density functional with point-coupling interaction

A new parametrization PC-PK1 for the nuclear covariant energy density functional with nonlinear point-coupling interaction is proposed by fitting to observables for 60 selected spherical nuclei, including the binding energies, charge radii and empirical pairing gaps. The success of PC-PK1 is illustrated in its description for infinite nuclear matter and finite nuclei including the ground-state and low-lying excited states. Particularly, PC-PK1 improves the description for isospin dependence of binding energy along either the isotopic or the isotonic chains, which makes it more reliable for application in exotic nuclei. The predictive power of PC-PK1 is also illustrated for the nuclear low-lying excitation states in a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian in which the parameters are determined by constrained calculations for triaxial shapes.

Octupole deformation for Ba isotopes in a reflection-asymmetric relativistic mean-field approach

The potential energy surfaces of even-even $^{142-156}$Ba are investigated in the constrained reflection-asymmetric relativistic mean-field approach with parameter set PK1. It is shown that for the ground states, $^{142}$Ba is near spherical,$^{156}$Ba well quadrupole-deformed, and in between $^{144-154}$Ba octupole deformed. In particular, the nuclei $^{148,150}$Ba with $N=92,94$ have the largest octupole deformations. By including the octupole degree of freedom, energy gaps $N=88$, $N=94$ and $Z=56$ near Fermi surfaces for the single-particle levels in $^{148}$Ba with $β_2\sim 0.26$ and $β_3\sim 0.17$ are found. Furthermore, the performance of the octupole deformation driving pairs ($ν2f_{7/2}$, $ν1i_{13/2}$) and ($π2d_{5/2}$, $π1h_{11/2}$) is demonstrated by analyzing the single-particle levels near Fermi surfaces in $^{148}$Ba.

Octupole degree of freedom for the critical-point candidate nucleus $^{152}$Sm in a reflection-asymmetric relativistic mean-field approach

The potential energy surfaces of even-even $^{146-156}$Sm are investigated in the constrained reflection-asymmetric relativistic mean-field approach with parameter set PK1. It is shown that the critical-point candidate nucleus $^{152}$Sm marks the shape/phase transition not only from U(5) to SU(3) symmetry, but also from the octupole-deformed ground state in $^{150}$Sm to the quadrupole-deformed ground state in $^{154}$Sm. By including the octupole degree of freedom, an energy gap near the Fermi surface for single-particle levels in $^{152}$Sm with $β_2 = 0.14 \sim 0.26$ is found, and the important role of the octupole deformation driving pair $ν2f_{7/2}$ and $ν1i_{13/2}$ is demonstrated.

$Q^2$--Dependence of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn Sum Rule

We test the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule numerically by calculating the total photon absorption cross sections $σ_{1/2}$ and $σ_{3/2}$ on the nucleon via photon excitation of baryon resonances in the constituent quark model. A total of seventeen, low-lying, non-strange baryon resonances are included in this calculation. The transverse and longitudinal interference cross section, $σ_{1/2}^{TL}$, is found to play an important role in the study of the $Q^2$ variation of the sum rule. The results show that the GDH sum rule is saturated by these resonances at a confidence level of 94%. In particular, the $P_{33}(1232)$ excitation largely saturates the sum rule at $Q^2 = 0$, and dominates at small $Q^2$. The GDH integral has a strong $Q^2$-dependence below $Q^2= 1.0 {GeV}^2$ and changes its sign around $Q^2= 0.3 {GeV}^2$. It becomes weakly $Q^2$-dependent for $Q^2 > 1.0 {GeV}^2$ because of the quick decline of the resonance contributions. We point out that the $Q^2$ variation of the GDH sum rule is very important for understanding the nucleon spin structure in the non-perturbative QCD region.
