Two types of boson stars in $U(1)$ gauged $3+1$-dimensional $O(3)$ sigma-model

We investigate boson stars in an $O(3)$ scalar field theory with a symmetry-breaking potential. By constructing numerically spherically symmetric solutions, we demonstrate that the model gives rise to a rich set of field configurations. The negative coupling constant of the scalar self-interactions allows for two types of boson stars: Type I solutions represent the usual boson stars, that emerge from the vacuum as the boson frequency is decreased below the boson mass, whereas type II boson stars emerge from a set of static soliton solutions. Depending on the strengths of the gravitational and the electric coupling constants, both types or only one type is present. At a critical set of coupling constants, both types undergo a bifurcation. There the spirals of both types disconnect from their branches and reconnect with each other, while the remaining branches of both types also reconnect with each other.

Phase transitions of boson stars in scalar-tensor theories

In scalar-tensor theories, compact objects may experience spontaneous scalarization. Recently, it was shown that matter-induced spontaneous scalarization of neutron stars is predominantly associated with a first-order phase transition. Here we consider matter-induced spontaneous scalarization of boson stars. Employing a repulsive quartic potential for the bosonic matter, we find only first-order phase transitions.

Geodesic Motion in a Swirling Universe: The complete set of solutions

We study the geodesic motion in a space-time describing a swirling universe. We show that the geodesic equations can be fully decoupled in the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism leading to an additional constant of motion. The analytical solutions to the geodesic equations can be given in terms of elementary and elliptic functions. We also consider a space-time describing a static black hole immersed in a swirling universe. In this case, full separation of variables is not possible and the geodesic equations have to be solved numerically.

Compact Objects in Alternative Gravities

We address neutron stars and black holes in alternative gravities, after recalling their basic properties in General Relativity. Among the plethora of interesting alternative gravities we here focus on an interesting set of scalar-tensor theories. We discuss the phenomenon of spontaneous scalarization, that is matter induced for neutron stars and curvature induced for black holes. Along with other relevant physical properties, we address the quasi-normal modes of these compact objects. In particular, we consider \textit{universal relations} of neutron stars to largely reduce the dependence on the equation of state, and we briefly address the shadow of black holes.

Hyperelliptic functions and motion in general relativity

Analysis of black hole spacetimes requires study of the motion of particles and light in these spacetimes. Here exact solutions of the geodesic equations are the means of choice. Numerous interesting black hole spacetimes have been analyzed in terms of elliptic functions. However, the presence of a cosmological constant, higher dimensions or alternative gravity theories often necessitate an analysis in terms of hyperelliptic functions. Here we review the method and current status for solving the geodesic equations for the general hyperelliptic case, illustrating it with set a of examples of genus $g=2$.

Neutron Stars

Neutron stars are highly compact astrophysical objects and therefore of utmost relevance to learn about theories of gravity. Whereas the proper equation of state of the nuclear matter inside neutron stars is not yet known, and a wide range of equations of state is still compatible with observations, this uncertainty can be overcome to a large extent, when dimensionless neutron star properties are considered. In this case universal relations between neutron star properties and for the gravitational radiation in the form of quasi-normal modes arise. These universal relations can be rather distinct for alternative theories of gravity as compared to General Relativity. Moreover, the presence of new degrees of freedom in alternative theories of gravity leads to further types of gravitational radiation, that may be revealed by pulsar observations and gravitational wave detectors. Here an introduction to neutron stars, their properties and universal relations is presented, followed by two examples of alternative theories of gravity featuring interesting effects for neutrons stars.

Radial perturbations of scalar-Gauss-Bonnet black holes beyond spontaneous scalarization

Spontaneous scalarization of black holes in scalar-Gauss-Bonnet (sGB) gravity is a very interesting phenomenon allowing black holes to circumvent the no-hair theorem and acquire scalar hair while leaving the weak field regime of the theory practically unaltered. It was recently shown that if we allow for a different form of the coupling between the scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, a new type of scalarization is possible beyond the standard one that can be excited only nonlinearly. In this case the spectrum of black hole solutions can be more complicated, naturally opening the question about their stability. The goal of the present paper is to study this question including the possible loss of hyperbolicity of the radial perturbation equation. We show that one of the nonlinearly scalarized phases of the Schwarzschild black hole can be stable and hyperbolic for large enough black hole masses. These results establish the studied hairy black holes as viable astrophysical candidates.

Axial perturbations of hairy Gauss-Bonnet black holes with massive self-interacting scalar field

We study the axial quasinormal modes of hairy black holes in Gauss-Bonnet gravity with massive self-interacting scalar field. Two coupling functions of the scalar field to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant are adopted with one of them leading to black hole scalarization. The axial perturbations are studied via time evolution of the perturbation equation, and the effect of the scalar field mass and the self-interaction constant on the oscillation frequency and damping time is examined. We study as well the effect of nonzero scalar field potential on the critical point at which the perturbation equation loses hyperbolicity in the case of black hole scalarization. The results show that the non-zero scalar field potential extends the range of parameters where such loss of hyperbolicity is observed thus shrinking the region of stable black hole existence. This will have an important effect on the nonlinear dynamical simulation studies in massive scalar Gauss-Bonnet gravity.

Scalarized Black Holes

Black holes represent outstanding astrophysical laboratories to test the strong gravity regime, since alternative theories of gravity may predict black hole solutions whose may differ distinctly from those of General Relativity. When higher curvature terms are included in the gravitational action as, for instance, in the form of the Gauss-Bonnet term coupled to a scalar field, scalarized black holes result. Here we discuss several types of scalarized black holes and some of their properties.

Spin-induced black hole scalarization in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory

We construct black hole solutions with spin-induced scalarization in a class of models where a scalar field is quadratically coupled to the topological Gauss-Bonnet term. Starting from the tachyonically unstable Kerr solutions, we obtain families of scalarized black holes such that the scalar field has either even or odd parity, and we investigate their domain of existence. The scalarized black holes can violate the Kerr rotation bound. We identify "critical" families of scalarized black hole solutions such that the expansion of the metric functions and of the scalar field at the horizon no longer allows for real coefficients. For the quadratic coupling considered here, solutions with spin-induced scalarization are entropically favored over Kerr solutions with the same mass and angular momentum.

Axial perturbations of the scalarized Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes

We study the axial perturbations of spontaneously scalarized black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) theories. We consider the nodeless solutions of the fundamental branch of the model studied in [1], which possesses a region of radially stable configurations, as shown in [2]. Here we show that almost all of the radially stable black holes are also stable under axial perturbations. When the axial potential is no longer strictly positive, we make use of the S-deformation method to show stability. As for the radial perturbations, hyperbolicity is lost below a certain critical horizon size for a fixed coupling constant. In the stable region, we determine the spectrum of the quasinormal modes by time evolution and by solving the associated time-independent eigenvalue problem.

Boson Stars and QCD Boson Stars

In this talk, we present a review of our work on boson stars in a theory of a massless complex scalar field in the presence of a $U(1)$ gauge field and gravity. A sequence of bifurcation points obtained in the phase diagrams of the theory is presented and the plots of the mass $~M~$ versus charge $~Q~$ as well as plots of the mass per unit charge $~M/Q~$ versus the charge $~Q~$ of the boson stars are presented along with a discussion of the results. We also present some ideas on the possibilities of QCD boson stars.

Einstein-Maxwell-scalar black holes: the hot, the cold and the bald

The phenomenon of spontaneous scalarisation of charged black holes (BHs) has recently motivated studies of various Einstein-Maxwell-scalar models. Within these models, different classes of BH solutions are possible, depending on the non-minimal coupling function $f(ϕ)$, between the scalar field and the Maxwell invariant. Here we consider the class wherein both the (bald) electrovacuum Reissner-Nordström (RN) BH and new scalarised BHs co-exist, and the former are never unstable against scalar perturbations. In particular we examine the model, within this subclass, with a quartic coupling function: $f(Φ) = 1+αΦ^4$. The domain of existence of the scalarised BHs, for fixed $α$, is composed of two branches. The first branch (cold scalarised BHs) is continuously connected to the extremal RN BH. The second branch (hot scalarised BHs) connects to the first one at the minimum value of the charge to mass ratio and it includes overcharged BHs. We then assess the perturbative stability of the scalarised solutions, focusing on spherical perturbations. On the one hand, cold scalarised BHs are shown to be unstable by explicitly computing growing modes. The instability is quenched at both endpoints of the first branch. On the other hand, hot scalarised BHs are shown to be stable by using the S-deformation method. Thus, in the spherical sector this model possesses two stable BH local ground states (RN and hot scalarised). We point out that the branch structure of BHs in this model parallels the one of BHs in five dimensional vacuum gravity, with [Myer-Perry BHs, fat rings, thin rings] playing the role of [RN, cold scalarised, hot scalarised] BHs.

Novel Einstein-Scalar-Gauss-Bonnet Wormholes without Exotic Matter

Novel wormholes are obtained in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory for several coupling functions. The wormholes may feature a single-throat or a double-throat geometry and do not demand any exotic matter. The scalar field may asymptotically vanish or be finite, and it may possess radial excitations. The domain of existence is fully mapped out for several forms of the coupling function.

Particle-like ultracompact objects in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories

We present a new type of ultracompact objects, featuring lightrings and echoes in the gravitational-wave spectrum. These particle-like solutions arise in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories in four spacetime dimensions, representing globally regular spacetime manifolds. The scalar field diverges at the center, but the effective stress-energy tensor is free from pathologies. We determine their domain of existence and compare with wormhole solutions, black holes and the Fisher solution.

Polar quasinormal modes of the scalarized Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes

We study the polar quasinormal modes of spontaneously scalarized black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. In previous works we showed that a set of nodeless solutions of the fundamental branch of the model studied in [1] are stable under both radial [2] and axial perturbations [3]. Here we calculate the polar quasinormal modes and show that this set of solutions is stable against the polar perturbations as well. Thus for a certain region of the parameter space the scalarized black holes are potentially stable physically interesting objects. The spectrum of the polar quasinormal modes differs both quantitatively and qualitatively from the Schwarzschild one which offers the possibility to test the Gauss-Bonnet theory via the future gravitational wave observations.

Properties of ultra-compact particle-like solutions in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories

Besides scalarized black holes and wormholes, Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories allow also for particle-like solutions. The scalar field of these particle-like solutions diverges at the origin, akin to the divergence of the Coulomb potential at the location of a charged particle. However, these particle-like solutions possess a globally regular metric, and their effective stress energy tensor is free from pathologies, as well. We determine the domain of existence for particle-like solutions in a number of Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories, considering dilatonic and power-law coupling functions, and we analyze the physical properties of the solutions. Interestingly, the solutions may possess pairs of lightrings, and thus represent ultra-compact objects. We determine the location of these lightrings, and study the effective potential for the occurrence of echoes in the gravitational-wave spectrum. We also address the relation of these particle-like solutions to the respective wormhole and black-hole solutions, and clarify the limiting procedure to recover the Fisher solution (also known as Janis-Newman-Winicourt-Wyman solution).

Quasi-periodic oscillations from the accretion disk around distorted black holes

We study the quasi-periodic oscillations from the accretion disk around the distorted Schwarzschild black hole in the framework of the resonant models. We confine ourselves to the case of a quadrupole distortion which can be caused for example by the accreting matter flow in the vicinity of the compact object. For the purpose we examine the linear stability of the circular geodesic orbits in the equatorial plane and derive analytical expressions for the radial and vertical epicyclic frequencies. We investigate their properties in comparison with the isolated Schwarzschild black hole. Due to the influence of the external matter the vertical epicyclic frequency is not always positive anymore, and the stability of the circular orbits is determined by the interplay between both of the frequencies. As a result, the stable circular orbits do not extend to infinity, but are confined to a finite annular region between an inner and an outer marginally stable orbit. In addition, the degeneracy between the vertical epicyclic and the orbital frequency, which is characteristic for the Schwarzschild solution, is broken, and there are regions in the parametric space where the radial epicyclic frequency is larger than the vertical one. All these properties allow for much more diverse types of non-linear resonances to be excited than for the isolated Schwarzschild black hole, which can provide an explanation for the observed 3:2 ratio between the twin-peak frequencies of the quasi-periodic oscillations from the accretion disk.

Quasinormal modes of dilatonic Reissner-Nordström black holes

We calculate the quasinormal modes of static spherically symmetric dilatonic Reissner-Nordström black holes for general values of the electric charge and of the dilaton coupling constant. The spectrum of quasinormal modes is composed of five families of modes: polar and axial gravitational-led modes, polar and axial electromagnetic-led modes, and polar scalar-led modes. We make a quantitative analysis of the spectrum, revealing its dependence on the electric charge and on the dilaton coupling constant. For large electric charge and large dilaton coupling, strong deviations from the Reissner-Nordström modes arise. In particular, isospectrality is strongly broken, both for the electromagnetic-led and the gravitational-led modes, for large values of the charge.

Ultra long lived quasinormal modes of neutron stars in massive scalar-tensor gravity

The spectrum of frequencies and characteristic times that compose the ringdown phase of gravitational waves emitted by neutron stars carries information about the matter content (the equation of state) and the underlying theory of gravity. Typically, modified theories of gravity introduce additional degrees of freedom/fields, such as scalars, which result in new families of modes composing the ringdown spectrum. Simple but physically promising candidates are scalar-tensor theories, which effectively introduce an additional massive scalar field (i.e. an ultra-light boson) that couples non-minimally to gravity, resulting in scalarized neutron stars. Here we present the first calculation of the full ringdown spectrum in such theories. We show that the ringdown spectrum of neutron stars with ultra-light bosons is much richer and fundamentally different from the spectrum in general relativity and that it possesses propagating ultra long lived modes.

Wormholes in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories with a scalar self-interaction potential

We construct wormholes in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories with a potential for the scalar field that includes a mass term and self-interaction terms. By varying the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant we delimit the domain of existence of wormholes in these theories. The presence of the self-interaction enlarges the domain of existence significantly. There arise wormholes with a single throat and wormholes with an equator and a double throat. We determine the physical properties of these wormholes including their mass, their size and their geometry.

We construct rotating black holes in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory with a quadratic coupling function. We map the domain of existence of the rotating fundamental solutions, we construct radially excited rotating black holes (including their existence lines), and we show that there are angularly excited rotating black holes. The bifurcation points of the radially and angularly excited solutions branching out of the Schwarzschild solution follow a regular pattern.

We derive the equations of motion and present their analytical solutions in terms of the Weierstrass {\wp} function and the Kleinian σ function. Finally we show some examples of orbits.

Axial quasi-normal modes of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-dilaton neutron stars

We investigate axial quasi-normal modes of realistic neutron stars in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-dilaton gravity. We consider 8 realistic equations of state containing nuclear, hyperonic, and hybrid matter. We focus on the fundamental curvature mode and compare the results with those of pure Einstein theory. We observe that the frequency of the modes is increased by the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet-dilaton, while the impact on the damping time is typically smaller. Interestingly, we obtain that universal relations valid in pure Einstein theory still hold for Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-dilaton gravity, and we propose a method to use these phenomenological relations to constrain the value of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling.

Black Holes in Higher Dimensions (Black Strings and Black Rings)

The last three years have again seen new exciting developments in the area of higher dimensional black objects. For black objects with noncompact higher dimensions, the solution space was exlored further within the blackfold approach and with numerical schemes, yielding a large variety of new families of solutions, while limiting procedures created so-called super-entropic black holes. Concerning compact extra dimensions, the sequences of static nonuniform black strings in five and six dimensions were extended to impressively large values of the nonuniformity parameter with extreme numerical precision, showing that an oscillating pattern arises for the mass, the area or the temperature, while approaching the conjectured double-cone merger solution. Besides the presentation of interesting new types of higherdimensional solutions, also their physical properties were addressed in this session. While the main focus was on Einstein gravity, a significant number of talks also covered Lovelock theories.

Can mixed star-plus-wormhole systems mimic black holes?

We consider mixed strongly gravitating configurations consisting of a wormhole threaded by two types of ordinary matter. For such systems, the possibility of obtaining static spherically symmetric solutions describing compact massive central objects enclosed by high-redshift surfaces (black-hole-like configurations) is studied. Using the standard thin accretion disk model, we exhibit potentially observable differences allowing to distinguish the mixed systems from ordinary black holes with the same masses.

Charged, rotating black objects in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory in $D\ge 5$

We show that the general framework proposed in arXiv:1410.0581 for the study of asymptotically flat vacuum black objects with $k+1$ equal magnitude angular momenta in $D\geq 5$ spacetime dimensions (with $0\leq k\leq \big[\frac{D-5}{2} \big]$) can be extended to the case of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton (EMd) theory. This framework can describe black holes with spherical horizon topology, the simplest solutions corresponding to a class of electrically charged (dilatonic) Myers-Perry black holes. Balanced charged black objects with $ S^{n+1} \times S^{2k+1}$ horizon topology can also be studied (with $D=2k+n+4$). Black rings correspond to the case $k=0$, while the solutions with $k>0$ are black ringoids. The basic properties of EMd solutions are discussed for the special case of a Kaluza-Klein value of the dilaton coupling constant. We argue that all features of these solutions can be derived from those of the vacuum seed configurations.

Detailed study of geodesics in the Kerr-Newman-(A)dS spactime and the rotating charged black hole spacetime in $f(R)$ gravity

We perform a detailed study of the geodesic equations in the spacetime of the static and rotating charged black hole corresponding to the Kerr-Newman-(A)dS spacetime. We derive the equations of motion for test particles and light rays and present their solutions in terms of the Weierstrass $\wp$, $ζ$ and $σ$ functions as well as the Kleinian $σ$ function. With the help of parametric diagrams and effective potentials we analyze the geodesic motion and classify the possible orbit types. This spacetime is also a solution of $f(R)$ gravity with a constant curvature scalar.

Extended objects in nonperturbative quantum field theory and the cosmological constant

We consider a gravitating extended object constructed from vacuum fluctuations of nonperturbatively quantized non-Abelian gauge fields. An approximate description of such an object is given by two gravitating scalar fields. The object has a core filled with a constant energy density of the vacuum fluctuations of the quantum fields. The core is located inside a cosmological event horizon. An exact analytical solution of the Einstein equations for such a core is presented. The value of the energy density of the vacuum fluctuations is connected with the cosmological constant.

Geometry of Spinning Ellis Wormholes

We give a detailed account of the properties of spinning Ellis wormholes, supported by a phantom field. The general set of solutions depends on three parameters, associated with the size of the throat, the rotation and the symmetry of the solutions. For symmetric wormholes the global charges possess the same values in both asymptotic regions, while this is no longer the case for non-symmetric wormholes. We present mass formulae for these wormholes, study their quadrupole moments, and discuss the geometry of their throat and their ergoregion. We demonstrate, that these wormholes possess limiting configurations corresponding to an extremal Kerr black hole. Moreover, we analyze the geodesics of these wormholes, and show that they possess bound orbits.

Rapidly Rotating Neutron Stars in Dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Theory

We construct sequences of rapidly rotating neutron stars in dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory, employing two equations of state for the nuclear matter. We analyze the dependence of the physical properties of these neutron stars on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling strength. For a given equation of state we determine the physically relevant domain of rapidly rotating neutron stars, which is delimited by the set of neutron stars rotating at the Kepler limit, the set of neutron stars along the secular instability line, and the set of static neutron stars. As compared to Einstein gravity, the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term decreases this domain, leading to lower values for the maximum mass as well as to smaller central densities. The quadrupole moment is decreased by the Gauss-Bonnet term for rapidly rotating neutron stars, while it is increased for slowly rotating neutron stars. The universal relation between the quadrupole moment and the moment of inertia found in General Relativity appears to extend to dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory with very little dependence on the coupling strength of the Gauss-Bonnet term. The neutron stars carry a small dilaton charge.

Search for astrophysical rotating Ellis wormholes with X-ray reflection spectroscopy

Recently, two of us have found numerically rotating Ellis wormholes as solutions of 4-dimensional Einstein gravity coupled to a phantom field. In this paper, we investigate possible observational signatures to identify similar objects in the Universe. These symmetric wormholes have a mass and are compact, so they may look like black holes. We study the iron line profile in the X-ray reflection spectrum of a thin accretion disk around rotating Ellis wormholes and we find some specific observational signatures that can be used to distinguish these objects from Kerr black holes. We simulate some observations with XIS/Suzaku assuming typical parameters for a bright AGN and we conclude that current X-ray missions cannot apply strong constraints.

Static Einstein-Maxwell Magnetic Solitons and Black Holes in an Odd Dimensional AdS Spacetime

We construct a new class of Einstein-Maxwell static solutions with a magnetic field in $D$-dimensions (with $D\geq 5$ an odd number), approaching at infinity a globally Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. In addition to the mass, the new solutions possess an extra-parameter associated with a non-zero magnitude of the magnetic potential at infinity. Some of the black holes possess a non-trivial zero-horizon size limit, which corresponds to a solitonic deformation of the AdS background.

The complete set of analytic solutions of the geodesic equation in the spacetime of this black hole are presented. The geodesic equations are solved in terms of Weierstrass elliptic functions and derivatives of Kleinian sigma functions. The different types of the resulting orbits are characterized in terms of the conserved energy and angular momentum as well as the cosmological constant $Λ$ and the real constant $β$.

Magnetic fields in mixed neutron-star-plus-wormhole systems

We consider mixed configurations consisting of a wormhole filled by a strongly magnetized isotropic or anisotropic neutron fluid. The nontrivial topology of the spacetime is allowed by the presence of exotic matter. By comparing these configurations with ordinary magnetized neutron stars, we clarify the question of how the presence of the nontrivial topology influences the magnetic field distribution inside the fluid. In the case of an anisotropic fluid, we find new solutions describing configurations, where the maximum of the fluid density is shifted from the center. A linear stability analysis shows that these mixed configurations are unstable.

Modified gravity from the nonperturbative quantization of a metric

Based on certain assumptions for the expectation value of a product of the quantum fluctuating metric at two points, the gravitational and scalar field Lagrangians are evaluated. Assuming a vanishing expectation value of the first order terms of the metric, the calculations are performed with an accuracy of second order. It is shown that such quantum corrections give rise to modified gravity.

Myers-Perry black holes with scalar hair and a mass gap: unequal spins

We construct rotating boson stars and Myers-Perry black holes with scalar hair (MPBHsSH) as fully non-linear solutions of five dimensional Einstein gravity minimally coupled to a complex, massive scalar field. The MPBHsSH are, in general, regular on and outside the horizon, asymptotically flat, and possess angular momentum in a single rotation plane. They are supported by rotation and have no static limit. Such hairy BHs may be thought of as bound states of boson stars and singly spinning, vacuum MPBHs and inherit properties of both these building blocks. When the horizon area shrinks to zero, the solutions reduce to (in a single plane) rotating boson stars; but the extremal limit also yields a zero area horizon, as for singly spinning MPBHs. Similarly to the case of equal angular momenta, and in contrast to Kerr black holes with scalar hair, singly spinning MPBHsSH are disconnected from the vacuum black holes, due to a mass gap. We observe that for the general case, with two unequal angular momenta, the equilibrium condition for the existence of MPBHsSH is $w=m_1Ω_1+m_2Ω_2$, where $Ω_i$ are the horizon angular velocities in the two independent rotation planes and $w,m_i$, $i=1,2$, are the scalar field's frequency and azimuthal harmonic indices.

Properties of the distorted Kerr black hole

We investigate the properties of the ergoregion and the location of the curvature singularities for the Kerr black hole distorted by the gravitational field of external sources. The particular cases of quadrupole and octupole distortion are studied in detail. We also investigate the scalar curvature invariants of the horizon and compare their behaviour with the case of the isolated Kerr black hole. In a certain region of the parameter space the ergoregion consists of a compact region encompassing the horizon and a disconnected part extending to infinity. The curvature singularities in the domain of outer communication, when they exist, are always located on the boundary of the ergoregion. We present arguments that they do not lie on the compact ergosurface. For quadrupole distortion the compact ergoregion size is negatively correlated with the horizon angular momentum when the external sources are varied. For octupole distortion infinitely many ergoregion configurations can exist for a certain horizon angular momentum. For some special cases we can have $J^2/M^4 > 1$ and yet avoid the naked singularity.

Radially excited rotating black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory

Rotating black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory possess remarkable features, when the Chern-Simons coupling constant reaches a critical value. Representing single asymptotically flat black holes with horizons of spherical topology, they exhibit non-uniqueness. In particular, there even exist extremal and non-extremal black holes with the same sets of global charges. Both extremal and non-extremal black holes form sequences of radially excited solutions, that can be labeled by the node number of the magnetic gauge potential function. The extremal Reissner-Nordström solution is no longer always located on the boundary of the domain of existence of these black holes, and it neither remains the single extremal solution with vanishing angular momentum. Instead a whole sequence of rotating extremal $J=0$ solutions is present, whose mass converges towards the mass of the Reissner-Nordström solution. These radially excited extremal solutions are all associated with the same near horizon solution. Moreover, there are near horizon solutions that are not realized as global solutions.

Scalarized Hairy Black Holes

In the presence of a complex scalar field scalar-tensor theory allows for scalarized rotating hairy black holes. We exhibit the domain of existence for these scalarized black holes, which is bounded by scalarized rotating boson stars and ordinary hairy black holes. Spinning black holes in Einstein--Gauss-Bonnet--dilaton theory: non-perturbative solutions

We present an investigation of spinning black holes in Einstein--Gauss-Bonnet--dilaton (EGBd) theory. The solutions are found within a non-perturbative approach, by directly solving the field equations. These stationary axially symmetric black holes are asymptotically flat. They possess a non-trivial scalar field outside their regular event horizon. We present an overview of the parameter space of the solutions together with a study of their basic properties. We point out that the EGBd black holes can exhibit some physical differences when compared to the Kerr solution. For example, their mass is always bounded from below, while their angular momentum can exceed the Kerr bound, Also, in contrast to the Kerr case, the extremal solutions are singular, with the scalar field diverging on the horizon.

Static black holes with axial symmetry in asymptotically AdS$_4$ spacetime

The known static electro-vacuum black holes in a globally AdS$_4$ background have an event horizon which is geometrically a round sphere. In this work we argue that the situation is different in models with matter fields possessing an explicit dependence on the azimuthal angle $φ$, which, however, does not manifest at the level of the energy-momentum tensor. As a result, the full solutions are axially symmetric only, possessing a single (timelike) Killing vector field. Explicit examples of such static black holes are constructed in Einstein--(complex) scalar field and Einstein--Yang-Mills theories. The basic properties of these solutions are discussed, looking for generic features. For example, we notice that the horizon has an oblate spheroidal shape for solutions with a scalar field and a prolate one for black holes with Yang-Mills fields. The deviation from sphericity of the horizon geometry manifests itself in the holographic stress-tensor. Finally, based on the results obtained in the probe limit, we conjecture the existence in the Einstein-Maxwell theory of static black holes with axial symmetry only.

Testing General Relativity with Present and Future Astrophysical Observations

One century after its formulation, Einstein's general relativity has made remarkable predictions and turned out to be compatible with all experimental tests. Most of these tests probe the theory in the weak-field regime, and there are theoretical and experimental reasons to believe that general relativity should be modified when gravitational fields are strong and spacetime curvature is large. The best astrophysical laboratories to probe strong-field gravity are black holes and neutron stars, whether isolated or in binary systems. We review the motivations to consider extensions of general relativity. We present a (necessarily incomplete) catalog of modified theories of gravity for which strong-field predictions have been computed and contrasted to Einstein's theory, and we summarize our current understanding of the structure and dynamics of compact objects in these theories. We discuss current bounds on modified gravity from binary pulsar and cosmological observations, and we highlight the potential of future gravitational wave measurements to inform us on the behavior of gravity in the strong-field regime.

Thermodynamic properties of asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes in d=4 Einstein-Yang-Mills theory

We investigate the thermodynamics of spherically symmetric black hole solutions in a four-dimensional Einstein--Yang-Mills-SU(2) theory with a negative cosmological constant. Special attention is paid to configurations with a unit magnetic charge. We find that a set of Reissner-Nordström--Anti-de Sitter black holes can become unstable to forming non-Abelian hair. However, the hairy black holes are never thermodynamically favoured over the full set of abelian monopole solutions. The thermodynamics of the generic configurations possessing a noninteger magnetic charge is also discussed.

Black ringoids: spinning balanced black objects in $d\geq 5$ dimensions -- the codimension-two case

We propose a general framework for the study of asymptotically flat black objects with $k+1$ equal magnitude angular momenta in $d\geq 5$ spacetime dimensions (with $0\leq k\leq \big[\frac{d-5}{2} \big]$). In this approach, the dependence on all angular coordinates but one is factorized, which leads to a codimension-two problem. This framework can describe black holes with spherical horizon topology, the simplest solutions corresponding to a class of Myers-Perry black holes. A different set of solutions describes balanced black objects with $S^{n+1} \times S^{2k+1}$ horizon topology. The simplest members of this family are the black rings $(k=0)$. The solutions with $k>0$ are dubbed $black~ringoids$. Based on the nonperturbative numerical results found for several values of $(n,k)$, we propose a general picture for the properties and the phase diagram of these solutions and the associated black holes with spherical horizon topology: $n=1$ black ringoids repeat the $k=0$ pattern of black rings and Myers-Perry black holes in 5 dimensions, whereas $n>1$ black ringoids follow the pattern of higher dimensional black rings associated with `pinched' black holes and Myers-Perry black holes.

Boson Stars with Nontrivial Topology

We construct boson star solutions in the presence of a phantom field, allowing for a nontrivial topology of the solutions. The wormholes residing at the core of the configurations lead to a number of qualitative changes of the boson star solutions. In particular, the typical spiraling dependence of the mass and the particle number on the frequency of the boson stars is lost. Instead, the boson stars with nontrivial topology approach a singular configuration in the limit of vanishing frequency. Depending on the value of the coupling constant, the wormhole geometry changes from a single throat configuration to a double throat configuration, featuring a belly inbetween the two throats. Depending on the mass of the boson field and its self-interaction, the mass and the size of these objects cover many orders of magnitude, making them amenable to various astrophysical observations. A stability analysis reveals, that the unstable mode of the Ellis wormhole is retained in the presence of the bosonic matter. However, the negative eigenvalue can get very close to zero, by tuning the parameters of the self-interaction potential appropriately.

Dynamics of test particles in the general five-dimensional Myers-Perry spacetime

We present the complete set of analytical solutions of the geodesic equation in the general five-dimensional Myers-Perry spacetime in terms of the Weierstrass $\wp$-, $ζ$- and $σ$-functions. We analyze the underlying polynomials in the polar and radial equations, which depend on the parameters of the metric and the conserved quantities of a test particle, and characterize the motion by their zeros. We exemplify the efficiency of the analytical method on the basis of the explicit construction of test particle orbits and by addressing observables in this spacetime.

Hiding a neutron star inside a wormhole

We consider neutron-star-plus-wormhole configurations supported by a massless ghost scalar field. The neutron fluid is modeled by an anisotropic equation of state. When the central energy density of the fluid is of comparable magnitude to the one of the scalar field, configurations with an equator at the center and a double throat arise. These double-throat wormholes can be either partially or completely filled by the neutron fluid. In the latter case, the passage of light - radiated by the neutron matter - through these wormholes is studied. A stability analysis indicates that all considered configurations are unstable with respect to linear perturbations, independent of whether the fluid is isotropic or anisotropic.

Myers-Perry Black Hole in an External Gravitational Field

We obtain a new exact solution of the 5D Einstein equations in vacuum describing a distorted Myers-Perry black hole with a single angular momentum. Locally, the solution is interpreted as a black hole distorted by a stationary $U(1)\times U(1)$ symmetric distribution of external matter. Technically, the solution is constructed by applying a 2-fold Bäcklund transformation on a 5D distorted Minkowski spacetime as a seed. The physical quantities of the solution are calculated, and a local Smarr-like relation on the black hole horizon is derived. It possesses the same form as the Smarr-like relation for the asymptotically flat Myers-Perry black hole. It is demonstrated that in contrast to the asymptotically flat Myers-Perry black hole, the ratio of the horizon angular momentum and the mass $J^2/ M^3$ is unbounded, and can grow arbitrarily large. We study the properties of the ergoregion and the horizon surface. The external field does not influence the horizon topology. The horizon geometry however is distorted, and any regular axisymmetric geometry is possible.

Non-Abelian fields in AdS$_4$ spacetime: axially symmetric, composite configurations

We construct new finite energy regular solutions in Einstein-Yang-Mills-SU(2) theory. They are static, axially symmetric and approach at infinity the anti-de Sitter spacetime background. These configurations are characterized by a pair of integers $(m, n)$, where $m$ is related to the polar angle and $n$ to the azimuthal angle, being related to the known flat space monopole-antimonopole chains and vortex rings. Generically, they describe composite configurations with several individual components, possesing a nonzero magnetic charge, even in the absence of a Higgs field. Such Yang-Mills configurations exist already in the probe limit, the AdS geometry supplying the attractive force needed to balance the repulsive force of Yang-Mills gauge interactions. The gravitating solutions are constructed by numerically solving the elliptic Einstein-DeTurck--Yang-Mills equations. The variation of the gravitational coupling constant $α$ reveals the existence of two branches of gravitating solutions which bifurcate at some critical value of $α$. The lower energy branch connects to the solutions in the global AdS spacetime, while the upper branch is linked to the generalized Bartnik-McKinnon solutions in asymptotically flat spacetime. Also, a spherically symmetric, closed form solution is found as a perturbation around the globally anti-de Sitter vacuum state.

Quadrupole Moments of Rapidly Rotating Compact Objects in Dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Theory

We consider rapidly rotating black holes and neutron stars in dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGBd) theory and determine their quadrupole moments, which receive a contribution from the dilaton. The quadrupole moment of EGBd black holes can be considerably larger than the Kerr value. For neutron stars, the universality property of the $\hat I$-$\hat Q$ relation between the scaled moment of inertia and the scaled quadrupole moment appears to extend to EGBd theory.

Rotating Ellis Wormholes in Four Dimensions

We present rotating wormhole solutions in General Relativity, which are supported by a phantom scalar field. These solutions evolve from the static Ellis wormhole, when the throat is set into rotation. As the rotational velocity increases, the throat deforms until at a maximal value of the rotational velocity, an extremal Kerr solution is encountered. The rotating wormholes attain a finite mass and quadrupole moment. They exhibit ergospheres and possess bound orbits.

$d\geq 5$ magnetized static, balanced black holes with $S^2\times S^{d-4}$ event horizon topology

We construct static, nonextremal black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations in $d=6,7$ spacetime dimensions, with an event horizon of $S^2\times S^{d-4}$ topology. These configurations are asymptotically flat, the U(1) field being purely magnetic, with a spherical distribution of monopole charges but no net charge measured at infinity. They can be viewed as generalizations of the $d=5$ static dipole black ring, sharing its basic properties, in particular the presence of a conical singularity. The magnetized version of these solutions is constructed by applying a Harrison transformation, which puts them into an external magnetic field. For $d=5,6,7$, balanced configurations approaching asymptotically a Melvin universe background are found for a critical value of the background magnetic field.

Axially symmetric static scalar solitons and black holes with scalar hair

We construct static, asymptotically flat black hole solutions with scalar hair. They evade the no-hair theorems by having a scalar potential which is not strictly positive. By including an azimuthal winding number in the scalar field ansatz, we find hairy black hole solutions which are static but axially symmetric only. These solutions possess a globally regular limit, describing scalar solitons. A branch of axially symmetric black holes is found to possess a positive specific heat.

Besides new asymptotically flat and locally asymptotically flat black objects also new black holes with anti-de Sitter asymptotics were reported. The studies of their properties included the investigation of their stability, their thermodynamics, their analyticity and their existence. Furthermore, the geodesics in such higher-dimensional space-times were investigated.

More specifically we discuss the configurations describing two black holes sitting on a Kaluza-Klein bubble and also the general charged static black Saturn balanced by a Kaluza-Klein bubble. A straightforward extension of the solution generating technique leads to a new solution describing the charged static black Saturn on the Taub-bolt instanton. We compute the conserved charges and investigate some of the thermodynamic properties of these systems.

Gravitating vortons as ring solitons in general relativity

Vortons can be viewed as (flat space-) field theory analogs of black rings in general relativity. They are made from loops of vortices, being sustained against collapse by the centrifugal force. In this work we discuss such configurations in the global version of Witten's U(1)xU(1) theory. We first consider solutions in a flat spacetime background and show their non-uniqueness. The inclusion of gravity leads to new features. In particular, an ergoregion can occur. Also, similar to boson stars, we show that the vortons exist only in a limited frequency range. The coupling to gravity gives rise to a spiral-like frequency dependence of the mass and charge. New solutions of the model describing 'semitopological vortons' and 'di-vortons' are also discussed.

Hairy Wormholes and Bartnik-McKinnon Solutions

We consider Lorentzian wormholes supported by a phantom field and threaded by non-trivial Yang-Mills fields, which may be regarded as hair on the Ellis wormhole. Like the Bartnik-McKinnon solutions and their associated hairy black holes, these hairy wormholes form infinite sequences, labeled by the node number $k$ of their gauge field function. We discuss the throat geometry of these wormholes, showing that odd-$k$ solutions may exhibit a double-throat, and evaluate their global charges. We analyze the limiting behavior exhibited by wormhole solutions as the gravitational coupling becomes large. The even-$k$ solutions approach smoothly the Bartnik-McKinnon solutions with $k/2$ nodes, while the odd-$k$ solutions develop a singular behavior at the throat in the limit of large coupling. In the limit of large $k$, on the other hand, an embedded Abelian wormhole solution is approached, when the throat is large. For smaller throats the extremal Reissner-Nordström solution plays a fundamental role in the limit.

Properties of rotating Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton black holes in odd dimensions

We investigate rotating Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMd) black holes in odd dimensions. Focusing on black holes with equal-magnitude angular momenta, we determine the domain of existence of these black holes. Non-extremal black holes reside with the boundaries determined by the static and the extremal rotating black holes. The extremal EMd black holes show proportionality of their horizon area and their angular momenta. Thus the charge does not enter. We also address the Einstein-Maxwell case, where the extremal rotating black holes exhibit two branches. On the branch emerging from the Myers-Perry solutions their angular momenta are proportional to their horizon area, whereas on the branch emerging from the static solutions their angular momenta are proportional to their horizon angular momenta. Only subsets of the near-horizon solutions are realized globally. Investigating the physical properties of these EMd black holes, we note that one can learn much about the extremal rotating solutions from the much simpler static solutions. The angular momenta of the extremal black holes are proportional to the area of the static ones for the Kaluza-Klein value of the dilaton coupling constant, and remain analogous for other values. The same is found for the horizon angular velocities of the extremal black holes, which possess an analogous behavior to the surface gravity of the static black holes. The gyromagnetic ratio is rather well approximated by the `static' value, obtained perturbatively for small angular momenta.

Rotating Wormholes in Five Dimensions

We consider rotating Lorentzian wormholes with a phantom field in five dimensions. These wormhole solutions possess equal angular momenta and thus represent cohomogeneity-1 configurations. For a given size of the throat, the angular momenta are bounded by the value of the corresponding extremal Myers-Perry black hole, which represents the limiting configuration. With increasing angular momenta the throat becomes increasingly deformed. At the same time, the violation of the null energy condition decreases to zero, as the limiting configuration is approached. Symmetric wormhole solutions satisfy a Smarr-like relation, which is analogous to the Smarr relation of extremal black holes. A stability analysis shows that the unstable mode of the static wormholes solutions vanishes when the angular momentum exceeds some critical value.

Sequences of extremal radially excited rotating black holes

In Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory the extremal Reissner-Nordström solution is no longer the single extremal solution with vanishing angular momentum, when the Chern-Simons coupling constant reaches a critical value. Instead a whole sequence of rotating extremal J=0 solutions arises, labeled by the node number of the magnetic U(1) potential. Associated with the same near horizon solution, the mass of these radially excited extremal solutions converges to the mass of the extremal Reissner-Nordström solution. On the other hand, not all near horizon solutions are also realized as global solutions

Supersymmetric rotating black hole spacetime tested by geodesics

We present the complete analytical solution of the geodesics equations in the supersymmetric BMPV spacetime \cite{Breckenridge:1996is}. We study systematically the properties of massive and massless test particle motion. We analyze the trajectories with analytical methods based on the theory of elliptic functions. Since the nature of the effective potential depends strongly on the rotation parameter $ω$, one has to distinguish between the underrotating case, the critical case and the overrotating case, as discussed by Gibbons and Herdeiro in their pioneering study \cite{Gibbons:1999uv}. We discuss various properties which distinguish this spacetime from the classical relativistic spacetimes like Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström, Kerr or Myers-Perry. The overrotating BMPV spacetime allows, for instance, for planetary bound orbits for massive and massless particles. We also address causality violation as analyzed in \cite{Gibbons:1999uv}.

The Gregory-Laflamme instability and non-uniform generalizations of NUT strings

We explore via linearized perturbation theory the Gregory-Laflamme instability of the NUT string (i.e the D=4 Lorentzian NUT solution uplifted to five dimensions). Wormholes Threaded by Chiral Fields

We consider Lorentzian wormholes with a phantom field and chiral matter fields. The chiral fields are described by the non-linear sigma model with or without a Skyrme term. When the gravitational coupling of the chiral fields is increased, the wormhole geometry changes. The single throat is replaced by a double throat with a belly inbetween. For a maximal value of the coupling, the radii of both throats reach zero. Then the interior part pinches off, leaving a closed universe and two (asymptotically) flat spaces. A stability analysis shows that all wormholes threaded by chiral fields inherit the instability of the Ellis wormhole.

Compact Boson Stars

We analyze the physical properties of these solutions and determine their domain of existence. Along their physically relevant branch emerging from the compact Q-ball solution, their mass increases with increasing radius. Empoying arguments from catastrophe theory we argue that this branch is stable, until the maximal value of the mass is reached. There the mass and size are on the order of magnitude of the Schwarzschild limit, and thus the spiralling respectively oscillating behaviour, well-known for compact stars, sets in.

Geodesic Motion in the (Charged) Doubly Spinning Black Ring Spacetime

In this article we analyze the geodesics of test particles and light in the five dimensional (charged) doubly spinning black ring spacetime. Apparently it is not possible to separate the Hamilton-Jacobi-equation for (charged) doubly spinning black rings in general, so we concentrate on special cases: null geodesics in the ergosphere and geodesics on the two rotational axes of the (charged) doubly spinning black ring. We present analytical solutions to the geodesic equations for these special cases. Using effective potential techniques we study the motion of test particles and light and discuss the corresponding orbits.

Electric charge on the brane?

We consider black holes localized on the brane in the Randall-Sundrum infinite braneworld model. These configurations are static and charged with respect to a spherically symmetric, electric Maxwell field living on the brane. We start by attempting to construct vacuum black holes, in which case our conclusions are in agreement with those of Yoshino in JHEP 0901:068, 2009 (arXiv:0812.0465). Although approximate solutions appear to exist for sufficiently small brane tension, these are likely only numerical artifacts. The qualitative features of the configurations in the presence of a brane U(1) electric field are similar to those in the vacuum case. In particular, we find a systematic unnatural behaviour of the metric functions in the asymptotic region in the vicinity of the AdS horizon. Our results are most naturally interpreted as evidence for the nonexistence of static, nonextremal charged black holes on the brane. In contrast, extremal black holes are more likely to exist on the brane. We determine their near-horizon form by employing both analytical and numerical methods. For any bulk dimension d>4, we find good agreement between the properties of large extremal black holes and the predictions of general relativity, with calculable subleading corrections.

Hyperelliptic integrals and Hořava-Lifshitz black hole space-times

The description of many dynamical problems like the particle motion in higher dimensional spherically and axially symmetric space-times is reduced to the inversion of hyperelliptic integrals of all three kinds. The result of the inversion is defined locally, using the algebro-geometric techniques of the standard Jacobi inversion problem and the foregoing restriction to the $θ$-divisor. For a representation of the hyperelliptic functions the Klein--Weierstraß multivariable $σ$-function is introduced. It is shown that all parameters needed for the calculations like period matrices and abelian images of branch points can be expressed in terms of the periods of holomorphic differentials and $θ$-constants. The cases of genus two, three and four are considered in detail. The method is exemplified by the particle motion associated with genus one elliptic and genus three hyperelliptic curves. Applications are for instance solutions to the geodesic equations in the space-times of static, spherically symmetric Hořava-Lifshitz black holes.

Particle motion in Horava-Lifshitz black hole space-times

We study the particle motion in the space-time of a Kehagias-Sfetsos (KS) black hole. This is a static spherically symmetric solution of a Horava-Lifshitz gravity model that reduces to General Relativity in the IR limit and deviates slightly from detailed balance. Taking the viewpoint that the model is essentially a (3+1)-dimensional modification of General Relativity we use the geodesic equation to determine the motion of massive and massless particles. We solve the geodesic equation exactly by using numerical techniques. We find that neither massless nor massive particles with non-vanishing angular momentum can reach the singularity at r=0. Next to bound and escape orbits that are also present in the Schwarzschild space-time we find that new types of orbits exist: manyworld bound orbits as well as two-world escape orbits. We also discuss observables such as the perihelion shift and the light deflection.

The angular momentum of the EGBd black holes can exceed the Kerr bound. The EGBd black holes satisfy a generalised Smarr relation. Stable Phases of Boson Stars

We analyze the physical properties of boson stars, which possess counterparts in flat space-time, Q-balls. Applying a stability analysis via catastrophe theory, we show that the families of rotating and non-rotating boson stars exhibit two stable regions, separated by an unstable region. Analogous to the case of white dwarfs and neutron stars, these two regions correspond to compact stars of lower and higher density. Moreover, the high density phase ends when the black hole limit is approached. Here another unstable phase is encountered, exhibiting the typical spiralling phenomenon close to the black hole limit. When the interaction terms in the scalar field potential become negligible, the properties of mini boson stars are recovered, which possess only a single stable phase.

We systematically study the underlying polynomials and characterize the motion of test particles by its zeros. Since the presence of the "Misner string" in the Taub-NUT metric has led to different interpretations, we consider these in terms of the geodesics of the space-time. But whereas higher-dimensional charged static (Tangherlini) and uncharged rotating (Myers-Perry) black holes were found long ago, black hole solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory, are not yet known in closed form in more than 4 dimensions, when both electric charge and rotation are present. Here we therefore study these solutions and those of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory, by using numerical and perturbative methods, and by exploiting the existence of spacetime symmetries. For Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with arbitrary Chern-Simons coupling constant, we perform the perturbations up to third order for any odd dimension. We discuss the physical properties of these black holes and study their dependence on the charge. The mass-energy which enters the first law of thermodynamics does not, however, coincide with the ADM mass; it differs from the latter by the energy associated with the conical singularity, as seen by an asymptotic, static observer. These statements are supported by a number of examples: the Bach-Weyl (double-Schwarzschild) solution, its dihole generalisation in Einstein-Maxwell theory and the five dimensional static black ring.

Properties of Charged Rotating Electroweak Sphaleron-Antisphaleron Systems

We perform a systematic study of stationary sphaleron-antisphaleron systems of Weinberg-Salam theory at the physical value of the weak mixing angle. These systems include rotating sphaleron-antisphaleron pairs, chains and vortex rings. We show that the angular momentum of these solutions is proportional to their electric charge. We study the dependence of their energy and magnetic moment on their angular momentum. We also investigate the influence of their angular momentum on their local properties, in particular on their energy density and on the node structure of their Higgs field configuration. Furthermore, we discuss the equilibrium condition for these solutions.

Rotating black holes with equal-magnitude angular momenta in d=5 Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory

We construct rotating black hole solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in five spacetime dimensions. These black holes are asymptotically flat, and possess a regular horizon of spherical topology and two equal-magnitude angular momenta associated with two distinct planes of rotation. The action and global charges of the solutions are obtained by using the quasilocal formalism with boundary counterterms generalized for the case of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. We discuss the general properties of these black holes and study their dependence on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$. We argue that most of the properties of the configurations are not affected by the higher derivative terms. For fixed $α$ the set of black hole solutions terminates at an extremal black hole with a regular horizon, where the Hawking temperature vanishes and the angular momenta attain their extremal values. The domain of existence of regular black hole solutions is studied. The near horizon geometry of the extremal solutions is determined by employing the entropy function formalism.

Rotating Boson Stars in 5 Dimensions

We study rotating boson stars in five spacetime dimensions. The boson fields consist of a complex doublet scalar field. Considering boson stars rotating in two orthogonal planes with both angular momenta of equal magnitude, a special ansatz for the boson field and the metric allows for solutions with nontrivial dependence on the radial coordinate only. The charge of the scalar field equals the sum of the angular momenta. The rotating boson stars are globally regular and asymptotically flat. For our choice of a sixtic potential the rotating boson star solutions possess a flat spacetime limit. We study the solutions in flat and curved spacetime.

$d\geq 5$ static black holes with $S^2\times S^{d-4}$ event horizon topology

We present numerical evidence for the existence of new black hole solutions in $d\geq 6$ spacetime dimensions. They approach asymptotically the Minkowski background and have an event horizon topology $S^2\times S^{d-4}$. These static solutions share the basic properties of the nonrotating black rings in five dimensions, in particular the presence of a conical singularity.

Charged Boson Stars and Black Holes

We consider boson stars and black holes in scalar electrodynamics with a V-shaped scalar potential. The boson stars come in two types, having either ball-like or shell-like charge density. We analyze the properties of these solutions and determine their domains of existence. When mass and charge become equal, the space-times develop a throat. The shell-like solutions need not be globally regular, but may possess a horizon. The space-times then consist of a Schwarzschild-type black hole in the interior, surrounded by a shell of charged matter, and thus a Reissner-Nordstroem-type space-time in the exterior. These solutions violate black hole uniqueness. The mass of the black hole solutions is related to the mass of the regular shell-like solutions by a mass formula of the type first obtained within the isolated horizon framework.

Generalized Weyl solutions in d=5 Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory: the static black ring

We argue that the Weyl coordinates and the rod-structure employed to construct static axisymmetric solutions in higher dimensional Einstein gravity can be generalized to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. As a concrete application of the general formalism, we present numerical evidence for the existence of static black ring solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in five spacetime dimensions. They approach asymptotically the Minkowski background and are supported against collapse by a conical singularity in the form of a disk. An interesting feature of these solutions is that the Gauss-Bonnet term reduces the conical excess of the static black rings. Analogous to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black strings, for a given mass the static black rings exist up to a maximal value of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α'$. Moreover, in the limit of large ring radius, the suitably rescaled black ring maximal value of $α'$ and the black string maximal value of $α'$ agree.

Rotating Boson Stars and Q-Balls

We consider axially symmetric, rotating boson stars. Their flat space limits represent spinning Q-balls. We discuss their properties and determine their domain of existence. Q-balls and boson stars are stationary solutions and exist only in a limited frequency range. The coupling to gravity gives rise to a spiral-like frequency dependence of the boson stars. We address the flat space limit and the limit of strong gravitational coupling. For comparison we also determine the properties of spherically symmetric Q-balls and boson stars.

Platonic Sphalerons in the Presence of a Dilaton Field

We construct sphaleron solutions with discrete symmetries in Yang-Mills-Higgs theory coupled to a dilaton. Related to rational maps of degree N, these platonic sphalerons can be assigned a Chern-Simons number Q=N/2. We present sphaleron solutions with degree N=1-4, possessing spherical, axial, tetrahedral and cubic symmetry. For all these sphalerons two branches of solutions exist, which bifurcate at a maximal value of the dilaton coupling constant.

Sequences of globally regular and black hole solutions in SU(4) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory

SU(4) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory possesses sequences of static spherically symmetric globally regular and black hole solutions. Considering solutions with a purely magnetic gauge field, based on the 4-dimensional embedding of $su(2)$ in $su(4)$, these solutions are labelled by the node numbers $(n_1,n_2,n_3)$ of the three gauge field functions $u_1$, $u_2$ and $u_3$. We classify the various types of solutions in sequences and determine their limiting solutions. The limiting solutions of the sequences of neutral solutions carry charge, and the limiting solutions of the sequences of charged solutions carry higher charge. For sequences of black hole solutions with node structure $(n,j,n)$ and $(n,n,n)$, several distinct branches of solutions exist up to critical values of the horizon radius. We determine the critical behaviour for these sequences of solutions. We also consider SU(4) Einstein-Yang-Mills-dilaton theory and show that these sequences of solutions are analogous in most respects to the corresponding SU(4) Einstein-Yang-Mills sequences of solutions.

Axially Symmetric Multisphalerons in Yang-Mills-Dilaton Theory

We construct sequences of axially symmetric multisphaleron solutions in SU(2) Yang-Mills-dilaton theory. The sequences are labelled by a winding number $n>1$. For $n=1$ the known sequence of spherically symmetric sphaleron solutions is obtained. The solutions within each sequence are labelled by the number of nodes $k$ of the gauge field functions. The limiting solutions of the sequences correspond to abelian magnetic monopoles with $n$ units of charge and energy $E \propto n$.

Static Axially Symmetric Solutions of Einstein-Yang-Mills-Dilaton Theory

We construct static axially symmetric solutions of SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills-dilaton theory. Like their spherically symmetric counterparts, these solutions are nonsingular and asymptotically flat. The solutions are characterized by the winding number n and the node number k of the gauge field functions. For fixed n with increasing k the solutions tend to ``extremal'' Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton black holes with n units of magnetic charge.

SU(3) Einstein-Skyrme Solitons and Black Holes

In the SU(3) Einstein-Skyrme system static spherically symmetric particle-like solutions and black holes exist for both the SU(2) and the SO(3) embedding. The SO(3) embedding leads to new particle-like solutions and black holes, sharing many features with the SU(2) solutions. In particular, there are always two branches of solutions, forming a cusp at a critical coupling constant. The regular SO(3) solutions have even topological charge $B$. The mass of the $B=2$ SO(3) solutions is less than twice the mass of the $B=1$ SU(2) solutions. We conjecture, that the lowest SO(3) branches correspond to stable particle-like solutions and stable black holes.

On Axially Symmetric Solutions in the Electroweak Theory

We present the general ansatz, the energy density and the Chern-Simons charge for static axially symmetric configurations in the bosonic sector of the electroweak theory. Containing the sphaleron, the multisphalerons and the sphaleron-antisphaleron pair at finite mixing angle, the ansatz further allows the construction of the sphaleron and multisphaleron barriers and of the bisphalerons at finite mixing angle. We conjecture that further solutions exist.

Sphalerons at finite temperature

We construct the sphaleron for several temperature dependent effective potentials. We determine the sphaleron energy as a function of temperature and demonstrate that the sphaleron energy at a given temperature $T$ is well approximated by the sphaleron energy at temperature zero scaled by the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the Higgs field at temperatures $T$ and zero. We address the cosmological upper bound on the Higgs mass.
