Some aspects of Skyrme--Chern-Simons densities

The gauge transformation properties of the Skyrme--Chern-Simons (SCS) densities is studied. Two types of SCS actions are identified, Type_{I} in which the gauge group is smaller than the largest possible one, and Type_{II} which are gauged with the largest allowed gauge group. Type_{I} SCS feature only one power of the gauge connection and no curvature, while Type_{II} feature both the gauge connection and the curvature. The Abelian Type_{I} SCS turn out to be explicitly gauge invariant while non-Abelian Type_{I} and all Type_{II} SCS are gauge invariant only up to a total divergence term, and hence lead to gauge covariant equations of motion. SCS actions are the gauged Skyrmion analogues of the usual Chern-Simons (CS) actions, except that unlike the CS which are defined only in odd dimensions, the SCS are defined also in even dimensions. Some areas of application in the construction of solitons are pointed out.

$SO(2)$ gauged Skyrmions in $4+1$ dimensions

We study the simplest $SO(2)$ gauged $O(5)$ Skyrme models in $4+1$ (flat) dimensions. In the gauge decoupled limit, the model supports topologically stable solitons (Skyrmions) and after gauging, the static energy of the solutions is bounded from below by a "baryon number". The studied model features both Maxwell and Maxwell--Chern-Simons dynamics. The considered configurations are subject to bi-azimuthal symmetry in the ${\mathbb R}^4$ subspace resulting in a two dimensional subsystem, as well as subject to an enhanced symmetry relating the two planes in the ${\mathbb R}^4$ subspace, which results in a one dimensional subsystem. Numerical solutions are constructed in both cases. In the purely magnetic case, fully bi-azimuthal solutions were given, while electrically charged and spinning solutions were constructed only in the radial (enhanced symmetric) case, both in the presence of a Chern-Simons term, and in its absence. We find that, in contrast with the analogous models in $2+1$ dimensions, the presence of the Chern-Simons term in the model under study here results only in quantitative effects.

On the effects of the Chern-Simons term in an Abelian gauged Skyrme model in $d=4+1$ dimensions

We study an Abelian gauged $O(5)$ Skyrme model in $4+1$ dimensions, featuring the $F^4$ Maxwell and the Chern-Simons terms. Our aim is to expose the mechanism, discovered in the analogous Abelian gauged $O(3)$ Skyrme model in $2+1$ dimensions, which leads to the unusual relation of the mass-energy $E$ to the electric charge $Q_e$ and angular momentum $J$, and, to the change in the value of the "baryon number" $q$ due to the influence of the Abelian field on the Skyrmion. Chern-Simons dynamics together with the dynamics of the gauged Skyrme scalar, allows for solutions with varying asymptotic values of the magnetic field, resulting in these unusual properties listed. Numerical work is carried out on an effective one dimensional subsystem resulting from imposition of an enhaced radial symmetry on ${\mathbb R}^4$.

Non-Abelian clouds around Reissner-Nordström black holes: the existence line

A known feature of electrically charged Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter planar black holes is that they can become unstable when considered as solutions of Einstein--Yang-Mills theory. The mechanism for this is that the linearized Yang-Mills equations in the background of the Reissner-Nordström (RN) black holes possess a normalizable zero mode, resulting in non-Abelian (nA) magnetic clouds near the horizon. In this work we show that the same pattern may occur also for asymptotically flat RN black holes. Different from the anti-de Sitter case, in the Minkowskian background the prerequisite for the existence of the nA clouds is $i)$ a large enough gauge group and $ii)$ the presence of some extra interaction terms in the matter Lagrangian. To illustrate this mechanism we present two specific examples, one in four and the other in five dimensional asymptotically flat spacetime. In the first case, we augment the usual $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills Lagrangian with higher order (quartic) curvature term, while for the second one we add the Chern-Simons density to the $SO(6)$ Yang-Mills system. In both cases, an Abelian gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken near a RN black hole horizon with the appearance of a condensate of nA gauge fields. In addition to these two examples, we review the corresponding picture for anti-de Sitter black holes. All these solutions are studied both analytically and numerically, existence proofs being provided for nA clouds in the background of RN black holes. The proofs use shooting techniques which are suggested by and in turn offer insights for our numerical methods. They indicate that, for a black hole of given mass, appropriate electric charge values are required to ensure the existence of solutions interpolating desired boundary behavior at the horizons and spatial infinity.

Charged isotropic non-Abelian dyonic black branes

We construct black holes with a Ricci flat horizon in Einstein--Yang-Mills theory with a negative cosmological constant, which approach asymptotically an AdS$_d$ spacetime background (with $d\geq 4$). These solutions are isotropic, $i.e.$ all space directions in a hypersurface of constant radial and time coordinates are equivalent, and possess both electric and magnetic fields. We find that the basic properties of the non-Abelian solutions are similar to those of the dyonic isotropic branes in Einstein-Maxwell theory (which, however, exist in even spacetime dimensions only). These black branes possess a nonzero magnetic field strength on the flat boundary metric, which leads to a divergent mass of these solutions, as defined in the usual way. However, a different picture is found for odd spacetime dimensions, where a non-Abelian Chern-Simons term can be incorporated in the action. This allows for black brane solutions with a magnetic field which vanishes asymptotically.

Higgs- and Skyrme-Chern-Simons densities in all dimensions

Two types of new Chern-Simons (CS) densities, both defined in all odd and even dimensions, are proposed. These new CS densities feature a scalar field interacting with a scalar. In one case this is a Higgs scalar while in the other it is a Skyrme scalar. The motivation is to study the effects of adding these new CS terms to a Lagrangian which supports static soliton solutions prior to their introduction.

Shrinking D-Strings Expanding onto a Hypertube

A solution to the BI action describing an expanded D3-brane is considered. The configuration is not supersymmetric but is supported against collapse by the Poynting vector. In the uniform magnetic field limit, the brane magnetic charge grows without limit while the energy and the radius of the brane remain finite. In this limit the brane consists of a large number of small D-strings forming a hypertube and kept in equilibrium by the electric flux along the hypertube.

A non-Abelian Chern-Simons--Yang-Mills-Higgs system in 3+1 dimensions

We study spherically symmetric solutions of an $SO(5)$ Chern-Simons--Yang-Mills-Higgs system in $3+1$ dimensions. The Chern-Simons densities are defined in terms of both Yang-Mills fields and a $5$-component isomultiplet Higgs. The $SO(3)\times{SO(2)}$ solutions are analysed in a systematic way, by employing numerical methods. These finite energy configurations possess both electric and magnetic global charges, differing radically, however, from Julia-Zee dyons. When two or more of these Chern-Simons densities are present in the Lagrangian, solutions with vanishing electric charge but nonvanishing electrostatic potential may exist.

Electrically charged finite energy solutions of an $SO(5)$ and an $SU(3)$ Higgs-Chern-Simons--Yang-Mills-Higgs systems in $3+1$ dimensions

We study spherically symmetric finite energy solutions of two Higgs-Chern-Simons--Yang-Mills-Higgs (HCS-YMH) models in $3+1$ dimensions, one with gauge group $SO(5)$ and the other with $SU(3)$. The Chern-Simons (CS) densities are defined in terms of both the Yang-Mills (YM) and Higgs fields and the choice of the two gauge groups is made so they do not vanish. The solutions of the $SO(5)$ model carry only electric charge and zero magnetic charge, while the solutions of the $SU(3)$ model are dyons carrying both electric and magnetic charges like the Julia-Zee (JZ) dyon. Unlike the latter however, the electric charge in both models receives an important contribution from the CS dynamics. We pay special attention to the relation between the energies and charges of these solutions. In contrast with the electrically charged JZ dyon of the Yang-Mills-Higgs (YMH) system, whose mass is larger than that of the electrically neutral (magnetic monopole) solutions, the masses of the electrically charged solutions of our HCS-YMH models can be smaller than their electrically neutral counterparts in some parts of the parameter space. To establish this is the main task of this work, which is performed by constructing the HCS-YMH solutions numerically. In the case of the $SU(3)$ HCS-YMH, we have considered the question of angular momentum, and it turns out that it vanishes.

Generalized dyons and magnetic dipoles: the issue of angular momentum

It is known that a non-Abelian magnetic monopole cannot rotate globally (although it may possess a nonzero angular momentum density). At the same time, the total angular momentum of a magnetic dipole equals the electric charge. In this work we question the generality of these results by considering a number of generalizations of the Georgi-Glashow model. We study two different types of finite energy, regular configurations: solutions with net magnetic charge and monopole-antimonopole pairs with zero net magnetic charge. These configurations are endowed with an electric charge and carry also a nonvanishing angular momentum density. However, we argue that the qualitative results found in the Georgi-Glashow model are generic and thus a magnetic monopole cannot spin as long as the matter fields feature the usual "monopole" asymptotic behaviour independently of the dynamics of the model. A study of the properties of the dyons and magnetic dipoles in some generalizations of the Georgi-Glashow model supplemented with higher order Skyrme-like terms in the gauge curvature and Higgs fields is given quantitatively.

Abelian Hopfions of the CP^n model on R^{2n+1} and a fractionally powered topological lower bound

Regarding the Skyrme-Faddeev model on $\mathbb R^3$ as a $\mathbb C \mathbb P^1$ sigma model, we propose $\mathbb C \mathbb P^n$ sigma models on $\mathbb R^{2n+1}$ as generalisations which may support finite energy Hopfion solutions in these dimensions. The topological charge stabilising these field configurations is the Chern-Simons charge, namely the volume integral of the Chern-Simons density which has a local expression in terms of the composite connection and curvature of the CP^n field. It turns out that subject to the sigma model constraint, this density is a total divergence. We prove the existence of a topological lower bound on the energy, which, as in the Vakulenko-Kapitansky case in R^3, is a fractional power of the topological charge, depending on $n$. The numerical construction of the simplest ring shaped un-knot Hopfion on R^5 is also discussed.

Electrically charged black branes in N=4^+, D=5 gauged supergravity

We analyze the properties of asymptotically AdS electrically charged black brane solutions in a consistent truncation of the N=4^+, D=5 Romans' gauged supergravity which contains gravity, SU(2) and U(1) gauge fields, and a dilaton possessing a nontrivial potential approaching a constant negative value at infinity. We find that the U(1)\times U(1) solutions become unstable to forming non-Abelian hair. These configurations emerge as zero modes of the Abelian solutions at critical temperature and a critical (nonvanishing) ratio of the electric charges and can be viewed as holographic p-wave superfluids.

Instantonic dyons of Yang-Mills--Chern-Simons models in d=2n+1 dimensions, n>2

We investigate finite energy solutions of Yang-Mills--Chern-Simons systems in odd spacetime dimensions, d=2n+1, with n>2. This can be carried out systematically for all n, but the cases n=3,4 corresponding to a 7,8 dimensional spacetime are treated concretely. These are static and spherically symmetric configurations, defined in a flat Minkowski background. The value of the electric charge is fixed by the Chern-Simons coupling constant.

An instability of the Reissner-Nordstrom solution and new hairy black holes in d=5 dimensions

The d=5 Reissner-Nordstrom black hole becomes unstable when considered as a solution of Einstein--Yang-Mills--Chern-Simons theory. The existence of a marginally stable mode gives rise to a new branch of black holes with non-Abelian magnetic fields outside the horizon. These solutions carry a nonzero electric charge and have finite mass. We argue that these features manifest themselves both for Minkowski and (Anti-)de Sitter asymptotics. The properties of solutions in a de Sitter background are new to the present work and are emphasised. All solutions constructed have finite mass by virtue of the presence of the Chern-Simons term, which in d=5 plays the role of a higher order term scaling appropriately for this purpose.

Einstein-Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons solutions in D=2n+1 dimensions

We investigate finite energy solutions of the Einstein--Yang-Mills--Chern-Simons system in odd spacetime dimensions, D=2n+1, with n>1. Our configurations are static and spherically symmetric, approaching at infinity a Minkowski spacetime background. In contrast with the Abelian case, the contribution of the Chern-Simons term is nontrivial already in the static, spherically symmetric limit. Both globally regular, particle-like solutions and black holes are constructed numerically for several values of D. These solutions carry a nonzero electric charge and have finite mass. For globally regular solutions, the value of the electric charge is fixed by the Chern-Simons coupling constant. The black holes can be thought as non-linear superpositions of Reissner-Nordstrom and non-Abelian configurations. A systematic discussion of the solutions is given for D=5, in which case the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole becomes unstable and develops non-Abelian hair. We show that some of these non-Abelian configurations are stable under linear, spherically symmetric perturbations. A detailed discussion of an exact D=5 solution describing extremal black holes and solitons is also provided.

Notes on Yang-Mills--Higgs monopoles and dyons on R^D, and Chern-Simons--Higgs solitons on \R^{D-2}: Dimensional reduction of Chern-Pontryagin densities

We review work on construction of Monopoles in higher dimensions. These are solutions to a particular class of models descending from Yang--Mills systems on even dimensional bulk, with Spheres as codimensions. The topological lower bounds on the Yang-Mills action translate to Bogomol'nyi lower bounds on the residual Yang-Mills-Higgs systems. Mostly, consideration is restricted to 8 dimensional bulk systems, but extension to the arbitrary case follows systematically. After presenting the monopoles, the corresponding dyons are also constructed. Finally, new Chern-Simons densities expressed in terms of Yang-Mills and Higgs fields are presented. These are defined in all dimensions, including in even dimensional spacetimes. They are constructed by subjecting the dimensionally reduced Chern-Pontryagin densites to further descent by two steps.

Scalar hairy black holes and solitons in a gravitating Goldstone model

We study black hole solutions of Einstein gravity coupled to a specific global symmetry breaking Goldstone model described by an O(3) isovector scalar field in four spacetime dimensions. Our configurations are static and spherically symmetric, approaching at infinity a Minkowski spacetime background. A set of globally regular, particle-like solutions are found in the limit of vanishing event horizon radius. These configurations can be viewed as 'regularised' global monopoles, since their mass is finite and the spacetime geometry has no deficit angle. As an unusual feature, we notice the existence of extremal black holes in this model defined in terms of gravity and scalar fields only.

Stable black hole solutions with non-Abelian fields

We construct finite mass, asymptotically flat black hole solutions in d=4 Einstein-Yang-Mills theory augmented with higher order curvature terms of the gauge field. They possess non-Abelian hair in addition to Coulomb electric charge, and, below some non-zero critical temperature, they are thermodynamically preferred over the Reissner-Nordstrom solution. Our results indicate the existence of hairy non-Abelian black holes which are stable under linear, spherically symmetric perturbations.

AdS_5 solutions in Einstein--Yang-Mills--Chern-Simons theory

We investigate static, spherically symmetric solutions of an Einstein-Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons system with negative cosmological constant, for an SO(6) gauge group. For a particular value of the Chern-Simons coefficient, this model can be viewed as a truncation of the five-dimensional maximal gauged supergravity and we expect that the basic properties of the solutions in the full model to persist in this truncation. Both globally regular, particle-like solutions and black holes are considered. In contrast with the Abelian case, the contribution of the Chern-Simons term is nontrivial already in the static, spherically symmetric limit. We find two types of solutions: the generic configurations whose magnetic gauge field does not vanish fast enough at infinity (although the spacetime is asymptotically AdS), whose mass function is divergent, and the special configurations, whose existence depends on the Chern--Simons term, which are endowed with finite mass. In the case of the generic configurations, we argue that the divergent mass implies a nonvanishing trace for the stress tensor of the dual d=4 theory.

Asymptotically flat, stable black hole solutions in Einstein--Yang-Mills--Chern-Simons theory

We construct finite mass, asymptotically flat black hole solutions in d=5 Einstein--Yang-Mills--Chern-Simons theory. Our results indicate the existence of a second order phase transition between Reissner-Nordstrom solutions and the non-Abelian black holes which generically are thermodynamically preferred. Some of the non-Abelian configurations are also stable under linear, spherically symmetric perturbations. In addition a solution in closed form describing an extremal black hole with non-Abelian hair is found for a special value of the Chern-Simons coupling constant.

Non-Abelian Yang-Mills-Higgs vortices

In this Letter we present new, genuinely non-Abelian vortex solutions in SU(2) Yang-Mills--Higgs theory with only one {\it isovector} scalar field. These non-Abelian solutions branch off their Abelian counterparts (Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortices) for precise values of the Higgs potential coupling constant $λ$. For all values of $λ$, their energies lie below those of the Abelian energy profiles, the latter being logarithmically divergent as $λ\to\infty$. The non-Abelian branches plateau in the limit $λ\to\infty$ and their number increases with $λ$, this number becoming infinite. For each vorticity, the gaps between the plateauing energy levels become constant. In this limit the non-Abelian vortices are non-interacting and are described by the {\it self-dual} vortices of the O(3) sigma model. In the absence of a topological lower bound, we expect these non-Abelian vortices to be {\it sphalerons}.

Gravitating BPS Monopoles in all d=4p Spacetime Dimensions

We have constructed, numerically, both regular and black hole static solutions to the simplest possible gravitating Yang-Mills--Higgs (YMH) in $4p$ spacetime dimensions. The YMH systems consist of $2p-$th power curvature fields without a Higgs potential. The gravitational systems consist of the `Ricci scalar' of the $p-$th power of the Riemann curvature. In 4 spacetime dimensions this is the usual Einstein-YMH (EYMH) studied in \cite{Breitenlohner:1991aa, Breitenlohner:1994di}, whose qualitative results we emulate exactly.

New AdS non Abelian black holes with superconducting horizons

We present arguments for the existence of higher dimensional asymptotically AdS non Abelian black holes with a Ricci flat event horizon and analyze their basic properties. Unlike higher dimensional black holes with a curved horizon, of the usual Einstein-Yang-Mills system, these solutions have finite mass-energy. Below some non-zero critical temperature, they are thermodynamically preferred over the Abelian configurations.

No hair conjecture, nonabelian hierarchies and anti-de Sitter spacetime

We consider globally regular and black holes solutions for the Einstein-Yang-Mills system with negative cosmological constant in $d-$spacetime dimensions. We find that the ADM mass of the spherically symmetric solutions generically diverges for $d>4$. Solutions with finite mass are found by considering corrections to the YM Lagrangean consisting in higher therm of the Yang--Mills hierarchy. Such systems can occur in the low energy effective action of string theory. A discussion of the main properties of the solutions and the differences with respect to the four dimensional case is presented. The mass of these configurations is computed by using a counterterm method.

Regular and black hole solutions to higher order curvature Einstein--Yang-Mills--Grassmannian systems in 5 dimensions

We construct both regular and black hole spherically symmetric solutions to the original higher curvature EYM model augmented by a Grassmannian sigma model field in $d=5$ spacetime dimensions. Unlike the original model, the new model supports regular solutions in the flat space limit. We find that a peculiar singular behaviour of the solutions in the original model, persists in the case of the modified model too. A study of the solutions to the Grassmannian model in flat space is also carried out.

Particle-like solutions to higher order curvature Einstein--Yang-Mills systems in d dimensions

We consider the superposition of the first two members of the gravitational hierarchy (Einstein plus first Gauss-Bonnet(GB)) interacting with the superposition of the first two members of the $SO_{(\pm)}(d)$ Yang--Mills hierarchy, in $d$ dimensions. Such systems can occur in the low energy effective action of string theory. Particle-like solutions %for the systems with only an Einstein term, and with only a GB term, in dimensions $d=6,8$ are constructed respectively. Our results reveal qualitatively new properties featuring double-valued solutions with critical behaviour. In this preliminary study, we have restricted ourselves to one-node solutions.

Instantons in 4-dimensional gauged O(5) Skyrme models

We consider a family of four-dimensional non-linear sigma models based on an O(5) symmetric group, whose fields take their values on the 4-sphere S4. An SO(4)-subgroup of the model is gauged. The solutions of the model are characterised by two distinct topological charges, the Chern-Pontryagin charge of the gauge field and the degree of the map, i.e. the winding number, of the S4 field. The one dimensional equations arising from the variation of the action density subjected to spherical symmetry are integrated numerically. Several properties of the solutions thus constructed are pointed out. The only solution with unit Chern-Pontryagin charge are the usual BPST instantons with zero S4 winding number, while solutions with unit S4 winding number have zero Chern-Pontryagin charge.

Finite energy/action solutions of $p_1$ Yang-Mills equations on $p_2$ Schwarzschild and deSitter backgrounds for dimension $d \ge 4$

Physically relevant gauge and gravitational theories can be seen as special members of hierarchies of more elaborate systems. The Yang-Mills (YM) system is the first member of a hierarchy of Lagrangians which we will index by $p_1$, and the Einstein-Hilbert (EH) system of general relativity is the first member of another hierarchy which we index by $p_2$. In this paper, we study the classical equations of the $p_1 = 1,2$ YM hierarchy considered in the background of special geometries (Schwarzschild, deSitter,anti-deSitter) of the $p_2=1,2,3$ EH hierarchy. Solutions are obtained in various dimensions and lead to several examples of non-self-dual YM fields. When $p_1=p_2$ self-dual solutions exist in addition. Their action is equal to the Chern-Pontryagin charge and can be compared with that of the non-self-dual solutions.

Monopoles and dyons in SO(3) gauged Skyrme models

Three dimensional SO(3) gauged Skyrme models characterised by specific potentials imposing special asymptotic values on the chiral field are considered. These models are shown to support finite energy solutions with nonvanishing magnetic and electrix flux, whose energies are bounded from below by two distinct charges - the magnetic (monopole) charge and a non-integer version of the Baryon charge. Unit magnetic charge solutions are constructed numerically and their properties characterised by the chosen asymptotics and the Skyrme coupling are studied. For a particular value of the chosen asymptotics, charge-2 axially symmetric solutions are also constructed and the attractive nature of the like-monopoles of this system are exhibited. As an indication towards the possible existence of large clumps of monopoles, some consideration is given to axially symmetric monopoles of charges-2,3,4.

d dimensional SO(d)-Higgs Models with Instanton and Sphaleron: d=2,3

The Abelian Higgs model and the Georgi-Glashow model in 2 and 3 Euclidean dimensions respectively, support both finite size instantons and sphalerons. The instantons are the familiar Nielsen-Oleson vortices and the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole solutions respectively. We have constructed the sphaleron solutions and calculated the Chern-Simons charges N_cs for sphalerons of both models and have constructed two types of noncontractible loops between topologically distinct vacuua. Monopole-Skyrmions

A systematic numerical study of the classical solutions to the combined system consisting of the Georgi-Glashow model and the SO(3) gauged Skyrme model is presented. The solutions feature some very interesting bifurcation patterns, and it is found that some branches of these solutions are unstable.

Skyrme Sphalerons of an O(3)-sigma Model and the Calculation of Transition Rates at Finite Temperature

The reduced O(3)-sigma model with an O(3)->O(2) symmetry breaking potential is considered with an additional Skyrmionic term, i.e. a totally antisymmetric quartic term in the field derivatives. This Skyrme term does not affect the classical static equations of motionwhich, however, allow an unstable sphaleron solution. Quantum fluctuations around the static classical solution are considered for the determination of the rate of thermally induced transitions between topologically distinct vacua mediated by the sphaleron. The main technical effect of the Skyrme term is to produce an extra measure factor in one of the fluctuation path integrals which is therefore evaluated using a measure-modified Fourier-Matsubara decomposition (this being one of the few cases permitting this explicit calculation). The resulting transition rate is valid in a temperature region different from that of the original Skyrme-less model, and the crossover from transitions dominated by thermal fluctuations to those dominated by tunneling at the lower limit of this range depends on the strength of the Skyrme coupling.

Significance of zero modes in path--integral quantization of solitonic theories with BRST invariance

The significance of zero modes in the path-integral quantization of some solitonic models is investigated. In particular a Skyrme-like theory with topological vortices in (1+2) dimensions is studied, and with a BRST invariant gauge fixing a well defined transition amplitude is obtained in the one loop approximation. We also present an alternative method which does not necessitate evoking the time-dependence in the functional integral, but is equivalent to the original one in dealing with the quantization in the background of the static classical solution of the non-linear field equations. The considerations given here are particularly useful in - but also limited to - the one-loop approximation.

Zero Modes of Rotationally Symmetric Generalized Vortices and Vortex Scattering

Zero modes of rotationally symmetric vortices in a hierarchy of generalized Abelian Higgs models are studied. Under the finite-energy and the smoothness condition, it is shown, that in all models, $n$ self-dual vortices superimposed at the origin have $2n$ modes. The relevance of these modes for vortex scattering is discussed, first in the context of the slow-motion approximation. Then a corresponding Cauchy problem for an all head-on collision of $n$ vortices is formulated. It is shown that the solution of this Cauchy problem has a $\fracπ{n}$ symmetry.
