Increasing a microscope's effective field of view via overlapped imaging and machine learning

This work demonstrates a multi-lens microscopic imaging system that overlaps multiple independent fields of view on a single sensor for high-efficiency automated specimen analysis. Automatic detection, classification and counting of various morphological features of interest is now a crucial component of both biomedical research and disease diagnosis. While convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have dramatically improved the accuracy of counting cells and sub-cellular features from acquired digital image data, the overall throughput is still typically hindered by the limited space-bandwidth product (SBP) of conventional microscopes. Here, we show both in simulation and experiment that overlapped imaging and co-designed analysis software can achieve accurate detection of diagnostically-relevant features for several applications, including counting of white blood cells and the malaria parasite, leading to multi-fold increase in detection and processing throughput with minimal reduction in accuracy.

Implications of Stahl's Theorems to Holomorphic Embedding Pt. 2: Numerical Convergence

What has become known as Stahl's Theorem in power-engineering circles has been used to justify a convergence guarantee of the Holomorphic Embedding Method (HEM) as it applies to the power-flow problem. In this, the second part of a two-part paper, we examine implications to numerical convergence of HEM and the numerical properties of a Padé approximant algorithm. We show that even if the convergence domain is identical to the function's domain, numerical convergence of the sequence of Padé approximants computed with finite precision is not guaranteed. We also show that the study of convergence properties of the Padé approximant is the study of the location of branch-points of the function, which dictate branch-cut topology and capacity and, therefore, convergence rate. We show how poorly chosen embeddings can prevent numerical convergence.

A novel type of spiral wave with trapped ions

Pattern formation in ultra-cold quantum systems has recently received a great deal of attention. In this work, we investigate a two-dimensional model system accounting for the dynamics of trapped ions. We find a novel spiral wave which is rigidly rotating but with a peculiar core region in which adjacent ions oscillate in anti-phase. The formation of this novel spiral wave is ascribed to the novel excitability reported by Lee and Cross. The breakup of the novel spiral wave is probed and, especially, one extraordinary scenario of the disappearance of spiral wave caused by spontaneous expansion of the anti-phased core is unveiled.

The oscillating two-cluster chimera state in non-locally coupled phase oscillators

We investigate an array of identical phase oscillators non-locally coupled without time delay, and find that chimera state with two coherent clusters exists which is only reported in delay-coupled systems previously. Moreover, we find that the chimera state is not stationary for any finite number of oscillators. The existence of the two-cluster chimera state and its time-dependent behaviors for finite number of oscillators are confirmed by the theoretical analysis based on the self-consistency treatment and the Ott-Antonsen ansatz.
