Fluctuation contribution to Spin Hall Effect in Superconductors

We theoretically study the contribution of superconducting fluctuation to extrinsic spin Hall effects in two- and three-dimensional electron gas and intrinsic spin Hall effects in two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction. The Aslamazov-Larkin, Density-of-States, Maki-Thompson terms have logarithmic divergence $\lnε$ in the limit $ε=(T- T_{\mathrm{c}})/T_{\mathrm{c}} \rightarrow +0$ in two-dimensional systems for both extrinsic and intrinsic spin Hall effects except the Maki-Thompson terms in extrinsic effect, which are proportional to $(ε-γ_φ)^{-1}\lnε$ with a cutoff $γ_φ$ in two-dimensional systems. We found that the fluctuation effects on the extrinsic spin Hall effect have an opposite sign to that in the normal state, while those on the intrinsic spin Hall effect have the same sign.

Are Quasiparticles and Phonons Identical in Bose--Einstein Condensates?

We study an interacting spinless Bose-Einstein condensate to clarify theoretically whether the spectra of its quasiparticles (one-particle excitations) and collective modes (two-particle excitations) are identical, as concluded by Gavoret and Nozières [Ann. Phys. 28, 349 (1964)]. We derive analytic expressions for their first and second moments so as to extend the Bijl-Feynman formula for the peak of the collective-mode spectrum to its width (inverse lifetime) and also to the one-particle channel. The obtained formulas indicate that the width of the collective-mode spectrum manifestly vanishes in the long-wavelength limit, whereas that of the quasiparticle spectrum apparently remains finite. We also evaluate the peaks and widths of the two spectra numerically for a model interaction potential in terms of the Jastrow wave function optimized by a variational method. It is thereby found that the width of the quasiparticle spectrum increases towards a constant as the wavenumber decreases. This marked difference in the spectral widths implies that the two spectra are distinct. In particular, the lifetime of the quasiparticles remains finite even in the long-wavelength limit.

Coherence Effects of Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon Modes in Nodal Topological Superconductors

Coherence effects by the impurity scattering of Caroli--de Gennes--Matricon (CdGM) modes in a vortex for nodal topological superconductors have been studied. The coherence effects reflect a topological number defined on a particular momentum space avoiding the superconducting gap nodes. First, we analytically derived the eigenvalue and eigenfunction of the CdGM modes, including the zero-energy modes, in a nodal topological superconducting state without impurities, where we focused on a possible superconducting state of UPt$_3$ as an example. Then, we studied impurity effects on the CdGM modes by introducing the impurity self-energy, which are dominated by the coherence factor depending on the eigenfunction of the CdGM modes. For the zero-energy CdGM modes, the coherence factor vanishes in a certain momentum range, which is guaranteed by topological invariance characterized by the one-dimensional winding number.

Emergence of Non-Axisymmetric Vortex in Strong-Coupling Chiral p-Wave Superconductor

We studied strong-coupling effect upon an isolated vortex in a two-dimensional chiral p-wave superconductor. We solved the Eilenberger equation for the quasiclassical Green's functions and the Eliashberg equation with single mode Einstein boson self-consistently. We calculated the free-energy of each obtained vortex, and found that a non-axisymmetric vortex metastably exists in some situation.

Finite-Temperature Properties of Three-Dimensional Classical Chiral Helimagnets

A three-dimensional chiral helimagnet is analyzed using a mean-field (MF) analysis and a classical Monte Carlo (MC) simulation at finite temperatures. We consider a Hamiltonian containing Heisenberg exchange and uni-axial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions on a simple cubic lattice. Magnetization curves calculated by the MF theory are qualitatively consistent with those observed in experiments. A comparison between lattice and continuum models clarifies the region where the continuum approximation can be applied. By combining the MF theory with the classical MC method, it is also clarified that results are quantitatively much improved by including spin correlations in the layer perpendicular to the helical axis. On the basis of our simple model, interaction parameters in $CrNb_3S_6$ are estimated. These values of exchange interactions justify a physical picture that the spins are strongly coupled in the two-dimensional layer and are weakly interacted with those in the helical chain.

Nature of driving force on an isolated moving vortex in dirty superconductors

We reconsider the force-balance relation on an isolated vortex in the flux flow state within the scheme of time-dependent-Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equation. We define force on the vortex by the total force on superconducting electrons in the region $S$ surrounding the vortex. We derive the local momentum balance relation of superconducting electrons and then find the force-balance relation on isolated vortex with taking account of the fact that the transport current in charged superconductors are inherently spatially varying with the scale of penetration depth $λ$. We also find that nature of the driving force is hydrodynamic when $S$ is the disk with radius $R$ satisfying $ξ\ll R\ll λ$ ($ξ$ is the coherence length) while the hydrodynamic and magnetic parts contribute equally to the driving force for $λ\lesssim R$.

Perturbative Approach to Superfluidity under Nonuniform Potential

A perturbative way to investigate superfluid properties of various systems under nonuniform potential is presented. We derive the perturbation expansion of the superfluid fraction, which indicates how liquid exhibits nonclassical rotational inertia, in terms of the strength of nonuniform potential and find that the coefficient of the leading term reflects the density fluctuation of the system. Our formulation does not assume anything about Bose-Einstein condensation and thus is applicable to wide variety of systems. Superfluid properties of some examples including (non-)interacting Bose systems, especially Bose gas in the mean field limit, (non-)interacting Fermi sytems, Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and spinless chiral $p$-wave superfluid are investigated.

Effects of Weak and Strong Scatterers on the Spectra of Vortex Andreev Bound States in Two-Dimensional Chiral p-wave Superconductors

The vortices of two-dimensional chiral $p$-wave superconductors are predicted to exhibit some exotic behaviors; one of their curious features is the existence of two types of vortices (each vortex has vorticity either parallel or antiparallel to the Cooper pair's chirality) and the robustness of the antiparallel vortices against nonmagnetic Born-like impurities. In this work, we study the impurity effect on the vortex of the chiral $p$-wave superconductors through the quasiclassical Green's function formalism. We take account of impurities via the self-consistent $t$-matrix approximation so that we can deal with strong as well as Born-like (i.e., weak) scatterers. We found that the spectrum is heavily broadened when the phase shift $δ_0$ of each impurity exceeds a critical value $δ_{\text{c}}$ above which the impurity band emerges at the Fermi level. We also found a quantitative difference in the impurity effects on the two types of vortex for $δ_0<δ_{\text{c}}$. Part of the numerical results for $δ_0<δ_{\text{c}}$ can be understood by a variant of the analytical theory of Kramer and Pesch for bound states localized within vortex cores.

Impurity Effects on Bound States in the Vortex Core of Topological S-wave Superconductor

We study the impurity effects on the Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon (CdGM) states, particularly on the level spacings in a vortex core in topological s-wave superconductor (SC) by two means, numerically and analytically. The topological s-wave SC belongs to the same class as a chiral p-wave SC and thus there are two inequivalent vortices in terms of any symmetry operation. We take into account this inequivalence and numerically calculate the scattering rates based on an improved version of Kopnin-Kravtsov (iKK) scheme, which enables us to treat the discrete levels in the presence of white-noise disorder. We also construct the Andreev equation for the topological s-wave SC and obtain the Andreev bound states analytically. We use a correspondence between the wave functions for the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation and the Andreev equation in the iKK scheme and deduce the formula of scattering rates described by the wave function for the Andreev equation. With this formula, we discuss the origin of impurity scattering rates for CdGM states of topological s-wave SC and the dependence on the types of vortices related to the inequivalence.

Impurity Effects on Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon Mode in a Vortex Core in Superconductors

We develop a scheme of Gor'kov Green's functions to treat impurity effects on Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon (CdGM) mode in superconductors (SCs) by improving the Kopnin-Kravtsov scheme with respect to the coherence factors and applicability to various SCs. We can study the impurity effects keeping the discreteness of the energy spectrum in contrast to the quasiclassical theory. We can thus apply this scheme to the SCs with the small quasiclassical parameter $k_{\mathrm{F}}ξ_{0}$ (which is the product of the Fermi wavenumber $k_{\mathrm{F}}$ and the coherence length $ξ_{0}$ in pure SC at zero temperature) and/or superclean regime $Δ_{\mathrm{mini}} τ\gg1$ ($Δ_{\mathrm{mini}}$ and $τ$ denote, respectively, the level spacing of the CdGM mode called minigap and the relaxation time for CdGM mode and we take $\hbar =1$). We investigate the impurity effects as a white noise for a vortex in an s-wave SC and two types of vortices in a chiral p-wave SC, for various values of the quasiclassical parameters and impurity strengths (from moderately clean regime to superclean regime), and confirm the validity of this scheme.

Metastability, excitations, fluctuations, and multiple-swallowtail structures of a superfluid in a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a uniformly moving defect

We solve the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) and Bogoliubov equations to investigate the metastability of superfluidity in a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a uniformly moving defect potential in a two-dimensional torus. We calculate the total energy and momentum as functions of the driving velocity of the moving defect and find metastable states with negative effective-mass near the critical velocity. We also find that the first excited energy (energy gap) in the finite-sized torus closes at the critical velocity, that it obeys one-fourth power-law scaling, and that the dynamical fluctuation of the density (amplitude of the order parameter) is strongly enhanced near the critical velocity. We confirm the validity of our results near the critical velocity by calculating the quantum depletion. We find an unconventional swallowtail structure (multiple-swallowtail structure) through calculations of the unstable stationary solutions of the GP equation.

Particle Propagator of Spin Calogero-Sutherland Model

Explicit-exact expressions for the particle propagator of the spin 1/2 Calogero-Sutherland model are derived for the system of a finite number of particles and for that in the thermodynamic limit. Derivation of the expression in the thermodynamic limit is also presented in detail. Combining this result with the hole propagator obtained in earlier studies, we calculate the spectral function of the single particle Green's function in the full range of the energy and momentum space. The resultant spectral function exhibits power-law singularity characteristic to correlated particle systems in one dimension.

DC conductivity in an s-wave superconducting single vortex system

We study dynamics of a two-dimensional s-wave superconductor in the presence of a moving single vortex. Our analysis is based on the quasiclassical theory including the Hall term, generalized by Kita[T. Kita, PRB, 64, 054503 (2001)]. We numerically calculate the linear response of a moving single vortex driven by a dc external current in a self-consistent way, in the sense that Dyson equation, gap equation, Maxwell equations and generalized quasiclassical equation are solved simultaneously. We obtain Hall conductivity induced by vortex motion using the generalized quasiclassical equation, while we confirm that it vanishes in the conventional quasiclassical equation.

Impurity effects in a vortex core in a chiral p-wave superconductor within the t-matrix approximation

We study the effects of non-magnetic impurity scattering on the Andreev bound states (ABS) in an isolated vortex in a two-dimensional chiral p-wave superconductor numerically. We incorporate the impurity scattering effects into the quasiclassical Eilenberger formulation through the self-consistent $t$-matrix approximation. Within this scheme, we calculate the local density of states (LDOS) around two types of vortices: "parallel" ("anti-parallel") vortex where the phase winding of the pair-potential coming from vorticity and that coming from chirality have the same (opposite) sign. When the scattering phase-shift $δ_0$ of each impurity is small, we find that impurities affect differently low energy quasiparticle spectrum around the two types of vortex in a way similar to that in the Born limit ($δ_0\rightarrow 0$). For a larger $δ_0(\leq π/2)$ however we find that ABS in the vortex is strongly suppressed by impurities for both types of vortex. We found that there are some correlations between the suppression of ABS near vortex cores and the low energy density of states due to impurity bands in the bulk.

Precursor phenomena of nucleations of quantized vortices in the presence of a uniformly moving obstacle in Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate excitations and fluctuations of Bose-Einstein condensates in a two-dimensional torus with a uniformly moving Gaussian potential by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and the Bogoliubov equation. The energy gap $Δ$ between the current-flowing metastable state (that reduces to the ground state for sufficiently slowly-moving potential) and the first excited state vanishes when the moving velocity $v$ of the potential approaches a critical velocity v_c(>0). We find a scaling law $Δ\propto (1-|v|/v_c)^{1/4}$, which implies that a characteristic time scale diverges toward the critical velocity. Near the critical velocity, we show that low-energy local density fluctuations are enhanced. These behaviors can be regarded as precursor phenomena of the vortex nucleation.

Zero-field Hall effect in chiral p-wave superconductors near Kosterlitz-Thouless transition

We discuss Hall effect and power dissipation in chiral p-wave superconductors near Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in the absence of applied magnetic field. In bound pair dynamics picture, nonzero Hall conductivity emerges when vortex-antivortex bound pair polarization has a component transverse to the direction of external perturbation. Such effect arises from the broken time reversal symmetry nature of a chiral p-wave superconducting state and does not require an applied magnetic field. A frequency-dependent matrix dielectric function $ε(ω)$ is derived to describe the screening effect due to the pair polarization. Quantities related to the Hall conductivity and power dissipation, denoted as $ε^{-1}_\perp$ and $\Im (-ε^{-1}_\parallel)$, are investigated in frequency and temperature domain. The imaginary part of the former can show peak structure and sign reversal as a function of frequency close to transition temperature, as well as in the temperature domain at various fixed frequencies. The latter shows peak structure near transition temperature. These features are attributed to pair-size-dependent longitudinal and transverse response function of bound pairs. Consequences due to free vortex dynamics and the resulting total conductivity tensor $σ$ are also discussed.

Excitation Transport through a Domain Wall in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

We investigate the tunneling properties of collective excitations through a domain wall in the ferromagnetic phase of a spin-1 spinor Bose--Einstein condensate. Within the mean-field theory at T=0, we show that the transverse spin wave undergoes perfect reflection in the low-energy limit. This reflection property differs considerably from that of a domain wall in a Heisenberg ferromagnet where spin-wave excitations exhibit perfect transmission at arbitrary energy. When the Bogoliubov mode is scattered from this domain wall soliton, the transmission and reflection coefficients exhibit pronounced non-monotonicity. In particular, we find perfect reflection of the Bogoliubov mode at energies where bound states appear. This is in stark contrast to the perfect transmission of the Bogoliubov mode with arbitrary energy through a dark soliton in a scalar Bose--Einstein condensate.

Mean-field and stability analysis of two-dimensional flowing soft-core bosons modeling a supersolid

The soft-core boson system is one of the simplest models of supersolids, which have both off-diagonal long-range order (Bose-Einstein condensation) and diagonal long-range order (crystalline order). Although this model has been studied from various points of view, studies of the stability of current-flowing states are lacking. Solving the Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov equations, we obtain excitation spectra in superfluid, supersolid, and stripe phases. On the basis of the results of the excitation spectra, we present a stability phase diagram that shows the region of the metastable superflow states for each phase.

Anomalous tunneling of collective excitations and effects of superflow in the polar phase of a spin-1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate

We investigate tunneling properties of collective modes in the polar phase of a spin-1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. This spinor BEC state has two kinds of gapless modes, i.e., Bogoliubov mode and spin-wave. Within the framework of the mean-field theory at T=0, we show that these Goldstone modes exhibit the perfect transmission in the low-energy limit. Their anomalous tunneling behaviors still hold in the presence of superflow, except in the critical current state. In the critical current state, while the tunneling of Bogoliubov mode is accompanied by finite reflection, the spin-wave still exhibit the perfect transmission, unless the strengths of a spin-dependent and spin-independent interactions take the same value.

Transmission of Excitations in a Spin-1 Bose-Einstein Condensate through a Barrier

We investigate tunneling of excitations across a potential barrier separating two spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates. Using the mean-field theory at the absolute zero temperature, we determine transmission coefficients of excitations in the saturated magnetization state and unsaturated magnetization states. All excitations except the quadrupolar spin mode in the saturated magnetization state show the anomalous tunneling phenomenon characterized as perfect tunneling in the low momentum limit through a potential barrier. The quadrupolar spin mode in the saturated magnetization state, whose spectrum is massive, shows total reflection. We discuss properties common between excitations showing the anomalous tunneling phenomenon. Excitations showing perfect tunneling have gapless spectrum in the absence of the magnetic field, and their wave functions in the low energy limit are the same as the condensate wave function.

Tunneling properties of Bogoliubov mode and spin wave modes in supercurrent states of a spin-1 ferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate

We investigate tunneling properties of collective excitations in the ferromagnetic phase of a spin-1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). In addition to the Bogoliubov mode, this superfluid phase has two spin excitations, namely, the gapless transverse spin wave and the quadrupolar mode with a finite excitation gap. In the mean-field theory at T=0, we examine how these collective modes tunnel through a barrier potential that couples to the local density of particles. In the presence of supercurrent with a finite momentum $q$, while the Bogoliubov mode shows the so-called anomalous tunneling behavior (which is characterized by perfect transmission) in the low energy limit, the transverse spin-wave transmits perfectly only when the momentum $k$ of this mode coincides with $\pm q$. At $k=\pm q$, the wave function of this spin wave has the same form as the condensate wave function in the current carrying state, so that the mechanism of this perfect transmission is found to be the same as tunneling of supercurrent. Using this fact, the perfect transmission of the spin wave is proved for a generic barrier potential. We show that such perfect transmission does not occur in the quadrupolar mode. Further, we consider the effects of potentials breaking U(1) and spin rotation symmetries on the transmission properties of excitations. Our results would be useful for understanding excitation properties of spinor BECs, as well as the anomalous tunneling phenomenon in Bose superfluids.

Anomalous Scattering of Low-lying Excitations in a Spin-1 Bose-Einstein Condensate

We present the simplest theory of perfect tunneling of an excitation in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) through an impurity potential with an arbitrary shape in the low-momentum limit. That is for the transverse spin wave in the ferromagnetic phase of a spin-1 BEC. This mode obeys a Schrödinger-type equation; yet, effects of the potential on its transmission coefficient $T$ and on its scattering cross section $sigma$ vanish in that limit. The order parameter determines $T$, and the momentum $p$-dependence of $sigma$ exhibits a Rayleigh scattering type ($sigma propto p^{4}$). These properties are common between two types of Nambu-Goldstone modes: this spin wave and the Bogoliubov mode.

Dynamical Density Fluctuation of Superfluids near Critical Velocities

We propose a stability criterion of superfluids in condensed Bose-Einstein systems, which incorporates the spectral function or the autocorrelation function of the local density. Within the Gross-Pitaevskii-Bogoliubov theory, we demonstrate the validity of our criterion for the soliton-emission instability, with use of explicit forms of zero modes of the Bogoliubov equation and a dynamical scaling near the saddle-node bifurcation. We also show that the criterion is applicable to the Landau phonon instability and the Landau roton instability within the single-mode approximation.

Impurity Scattering Rate and Coherence factor in Vortex Core of Sign-reversing s-wave Superconductors

We investigate the impurity scattering rates for quasi-particles in vortex cores of sign-reversing s-wave superconductors as a probe to detect the internal phase difference of the order parameters among different Fermi surfaces. The impurity scattering rates and coherence factors are related to quasiparticle interference effect by the scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy technique. With use of the Born and Kramer-Pesch approximations for the Andreev bound states, we show that the sign-reversed forward scatterings are dominant in vortex cores. Owing to the coherence factor in vortex cores of \pm s-wave superconductors, the impurity scattering rate of the Andreev bound states has a characteristic distribution on the Fermi surfaces. For comparison, the impurity scattering rates in vortex cores of s-wave and d-wave superconductors are also discussed.

Transmission and Reflection of Collective Modes in Spin-1 Bose-Einstein Condensate

We study tunneling properties of collective excitations in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates. In the absence of magnetic fields, the total transmission in the long wavelength limit occurs in all kinds of excitations but the quadrupolar spin mode in the ferromagnetic state. The quadrupolar spin mode alone shows the total reflection. A difference between those excitations comes from whether the wavefunction of an excitation corresponds to that of the condensate in the long wavelength limit. The correspondence results in the total transmission as in the spinless BEC.

Derivation of Green's Function of Spin Calogero-Sutherland Model by Uglov's Method

Hole propagator of spin 1/2 Calogero-Sutherland model is derived using Uglov's method, which maps the exact eigenfunctions of the model, called Yangian Gelfand-Zetlin basis, to a limit of Macdonald polynomials (gl_2-Jack polynomials). To apply this mapping method to the calculation of 1-particle Green's function, we confirm that the sum of the field annihilation operator on Yangian Gelfand-Zetlin basis is transformed to the field annihilation operator on gl_2-Jack polynomials by the mapping. The resultant expression for hole propagator for finite-size system is written in terms of renormalized momenta and spin of quasi-holes and the expression in the thermodynamic limit coincides with the earlier result derived by another method. We also discuss the singularity of the spectral function for a specific coupling parameter where the hole propagator of spin Calogero-Sutherland model becomes equivalent to dynamical colour correlation function of SU(3) Haldane-Shastry model.

Elementary Excitations and Dynamical Correlation Functions of the Calogero-Sutherland Model with Internal Symmetry

We consider the physical properties of elementary excitations of the Calogero-Sutherland (CS) model with SU(K) internal symmetry. From the results on the thermodynamics of this model, we obtain the charge, spin, and statistics of elementary excitations. Combining this knowledge and the known results on the dynamics in the spinless CS model, we propose the expression for the dynamical correlation functions of the SU(K) CS model. In the asymptotic region, we confirm the consistency of our results with predictions from conformal field theory.

Numerical Study of the $S=1$ Antiferrromagnetic Spin Chain with Bond Alternation

We study the $S=1$ quantum spin chain with bond alternation ${\cal H}=\sum _i (1-(-1)^iδ)\vect{S}_i\cdot \vect{S}_{i+1}$ by the density matrix renormalization group method recently proposed by Steven R. White (\PRL{69}{3844}{1993}). We find a massless point at $δ_c =0.25 \pm 0.01$. We also find the edge states in the region $δ<δ_c$ under the open boundary condition, which disappear in the region $δ>δ_{c}$. At the massless point, the spin wave velocity $v_s$ is $3.66 \pm 0.10$ and the central charge $c$ is $1.0\pm 0.15$. Our results indicate that a continuous phase transition occurs at the massless point $δ=δ_c $ accompanying breaking of the hidden $Z_2\times Z_2$ symmetry.
