Amplitude-squared squeezing of Schrödinger cat states via Postselected von Neumann Measurement

We know that the original Schrödinger cat states has no amplitude-squared squeezing. In this paper, we investigate the amplitude-squared squeezing of Schrödinger cat states using postselected von Neumann measurement. The results show that after postselected von Neumann measurement, the amplitude-squared squeezing of Schrödinger cat states change dramatically and this can be considered a result of weak value amplification. The squeezing effect also investigated by studying the Wigner function of Schrödinger cat states after postselected measurement.

Effects of Postselected von Neumann Measurement on the Properties of Single-Mode Radiation Fields

Postselected von Neumann measurement characterized by postselection and weak value has been found potential applications in quantum metrology and, solved plenty of fundamental problems in quantum theory. As an application of this new measurement technique in quantum optics, its effects on the features of single-mode radiation fields such as coherent state, squeezed vacuum state and Schrodinger cat sate are investigated by considering full-order effects of unitary evolution. The results show that the conditional probabilities of finding photons, second-order correlation functions, Q-factors and squeezing effects of those states after postselected measurement significantly changed compared with corresponding initial pointer states, respectively.

Quantum state engineering using weak measurement

State preparation via postselected weak measurement in three wave mixing process is studied. Assuming the signal input mode prepared in a vacuum state, coherent state or squeezed vacuum state, separately, while the idler input prepared in weak coherent state and passing the medium characterized by the second-order nonlinear susceptibility. It is shown that when the single photon is detected at one of the output channels of idler beam's path, the signal output channel is prepared in single-photon Fock state, single-photon-added coherent state or single-photon-added squeezed vacuum state with very high fidelity, depending upon the input signal states and related controllable parameters. The properties including squeezing, signal amplification, second order correlation and Wigner functions of the weak measurement based output states are also investigated. Our scheme promising to provide alternate new effective method for producing useful nonclassical states in quantum information processing.

Studying the squeezing effect and phase space distribution of single-photon-added coherent state using postselected von Neumann measurement

In this paper, ordinary and amplitude-squared squeezing as well as Wigner functions of single-photon-added coherent state after postselected von Neumann measurements are investigated. The analytical results show that the von Neumann type measurement which is characterized by post-selection and weak value can significantly change the squeezing feature of single-photon-added coherent state. It is also found that the postselected measurement can increase the nonclassicality of the original state in strong measurement regimes. It is anticipated that this work could may provide an alternate and effective methods to solve state optimization problems based on the postselected von Neumann measurement technique.

Direct Measurement Methods of Density Matrix of an Entangled Quantum State

In general, the state of a quantum system represented by density operator and its determination is a fundamental problem in quantum mechanics. A method of direct measurement of matrix element of density operator of a single two dimensional quantum system using weak measurement was theoretically proposed[Phys. Rev. Lett. 134, 070402(2012)] and experimentally demonstrated[Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 120401(2016)] by Lundeen et al. Furthermore, recently the Guo-Guang Can et al.[Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 150402(2019)] investigated the method of direct measurement of a nonlocal entangled quantum state. However, up to now the methods of directly measure the matrix element of density operator of an entangled quantum state have not been explicitly studied yet. As an extension of previous works, in this study we introduce two theoretical methods such as using postselected weak measurement and sequential measurements of triple products of complementary observables to direct measurement of matrix elements of density operator of two photon entangled quantum system, and discuss the similarity and the feasibility of those methods.

Effects of postselected von Neumann measurement on nonclassicality of single-photon-added coherent state

The effects of von Neumann postselected measurement on nonclassicality of single-photon-added coherent state (SPACS) are studied. Explicit expressions and analytical results for various field properties of SPACS such as the photon number distribution, the Mandel Q_{m} factor and the squeezing parameter of field quadrature after postselected von Neumann measurement are investigated. The results showed that the nonclassicality of SPACS after measurement changed dramatically than initial state. The measurement let SPACS possess more strong sub-Poissonian photon statistics in some definite coupling strength regimes and large weak values which accompanied by low postselection probabilities.

Measure the temperature of the spin via weak measurement

In this study, we give a new proposal to measure the temperature of the spin in a sample in magnetic resonance force microscopy system by using postselected weak measurement, and investigate the fisher information to estimate the precision of our scheme. We showed that in high temperature regime the temperature of the spin can be measured via weak measurement technique with proper postselection and our scheme able to increase the precision of temperature estimation.

Generalized Modular Value with Nonclassical Pointer States

In this study, we investigate the advantages of non-classical pointer states in the generalized modular value scheme. We consider a typical von Neumann measurement with a discrete quantum pointer, where the pointer is a projection operator onto one of the states of the basis of the pointer Hilbert space. We separately calculate the conditional probabilities, Q_{M} factors, and signal-to-noise ratios of quadrature operators of coherent, coherent squeezed, and Schrödinger cat pointer states and find that the non-classical pointer states can increase the negativity of the field and precision of measurement compared with semi-classical states in generalized measurement problems characterized by the modular value.

Advantages of nonclassical pointer states in postselected weak measurements

We investigate, within the weak measurement theory, the advantages of non-classical pointer states over semi-classical ones for coherent, squeezed vacuum, and Schröinger cat states. These states are utilized as pointer state for the system operator $\hat{A}$ with property $\hat{A}^{2}=\hat{I}$, where $\hat{I}$ represents the identity operator. We calculate the ratio between the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of non-postselected and postselected weak measurements. The latter is used to find the quantum Fisher information for the above pointer states. The average shifts for those pointer states with arbitrary interaction strength are investigated in detail. One key result is that we find the postselected weak measurement scheme for non-classical pointer states to be superior to semi-classical ones. This can improve the precision of measurement process.

Post-selected von Neumann measurement with Hermite-Gaussian and Laguerre-Gaussian pointer states

Through the von Neumann interaction followed by post-selection, we can extract not only the eigenvalue of an observable of the measured system but also the weak value. In this post-selected von Neumann measurement, the initial pointer state of the measuring device is assumed to be a fundamental Gaussian wave function. By considering the optical implementation of the post-selected von Neumann measurement, higher-order Gaussian modes can be used. In this paper, we consider the Hermite--Gaussian (HG) and Laguerre--Gaussian (LG) modes as pointer states and calculate the average shift of the pointer states of the post-selected von Neumann measurement by assuming the system observable $\hat{A}$ with $\hat{A}^{2}=\hat{I}$ and $\hat{A}^{2}=\hat{A}$ for an arbitrary interaction strength, where $\hat{I}$ represents the identity operator. Our results show that the HG and LG pointer states for a given coupling direction have advantages and disadvantages over the fundamental Gaussian mode in improving the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We expect that our general treatment of the weak values will be helpful for understanding the connection between weak- and strong-measurement regimes and may be used to propose new experimental setups with higher-order Gaussian beams to investigate further the applications of weak measurement in optical systems such as the optical vortex.

Indirect driving of cavity QED system and its induced non-linearity

The linear driving for a single-mode optical field in a cavity can result from the external driving of classical field even when the coupling between the classical field and the cavity is weak. We revisit this well known effect with a microscopic model where a classical field is applied to a wall of the cavity to excite the atoms in the wall, and re-combination of the low excitations of the wall mediates a linear driving for the single-mode field inside the cavity. With such modeling about the indirect driving through the quantum excitations of the wall, we theoretically predict several non-linear optical effects for the strong coupling cases, such as photon anti-bunching and photon squeezing. In the sense, we propose the most simplified non-linear quantum photonics model.

EIT-like phenomenon with two atomic ensembles in a cavity

We study the spectra of collective low excitations of two atomic ensembles coupled indirectly through a single-mode cavity field. When the left ensemble is driven with an external optical field, its corresponding response spectrum to the incident optical light shows an electromagnetically induced transparency- (EIT-) like phenomenon when the layers are arranged in the sequence of node-antinode but not in the sequence of antinode-node. In the case of antinode-antinode sequence, the response spectrum shows an EIT-like phenomenon with two transparent windows. We also investigate the fluctuation spectra of the atomic collective excitation modes, which show similar EIT-like phenomena.

Entanglement of spin-orbit qubits induced by Coulomb interaction

Spin-orbit qubit (SOQ) is the dressed spin by the orbital degree of freedom through a strong spin-orbit coupling. We show that Coulomb interaction between two electrons in quantum dots located separately in two nanowires can efficiently induce quantum entanglement between two SOQs. The physical mechanism to achieve such quantum entanglement is based on the feasibility of the SOQ responding to the external electric field via an intrinsic electric dipole spin resonance.

Weak-Value Amplification of light deflection by a dark atomic ensemble

We study the coherent propagation of light whose dynamics is governed by the effective Schrödinger equation derived in a magneto-optically-manipulated atomic ensemble with a four-level tripod configuration for electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The small transverse deflection of an optical beam, which is ultra-sensitive to the EIT effect, could be drastically amplified via a weak measurement with an appropriate preselection and postselection of the polarization state. The physical mechanism is explained as the effect of wavepacket reshaping, which results in an enlarged group velocity in the transverse direction.
