On Deformation Space Analogies between Kleinian Reflection Groups and Antiholomorphic Rational Maps

In a previous paper, we constructed an explicit dynamical correspondence between certain Kleinian reflection groups and certain anti-holomorphic rational maps on the Riemann sphere. In this paper, we show that their deformation spaces share many striking similarities. We establish an analogue of Thurston's compactness theorem for critically fixed anti-rational maps. We also characterize how deformation spaces interact with each other and study the monodromy representations of the union of all deformation spaces.

On geometrically finite degenerations I: boundaries of main hyperbolic components

In this paper, we develop a theory on the degenerations of Blaschke products $\mathcal{B}_d$ to study the boundaries of hyperbolic components. We give a combinatorial classification of geometrically finite polynomials on the boundary of the main hyperbolic component $\mathcal{H}_d$ containing $z^d$. We show the closure $\overline{\mathcal{H}_d}$ is not a topological manifold with boundary for $d\geq 4$ by constructing self-bumps on its boundary.

Circle packings, kissing reflection groups and critically fixed anti-rational maps

In this paper, we establish an explicit correspondence between kissing reflection groups and critically fixed anti-rational maps. The correspondence, which is expressed using simple planar graphs, has several dynamical consequences. As an application of this correspondence, we give complete answers to geometric mating problems for critically fixed anti-rational maps.

On hyperbolic rational maps with finitely connected Fatou sets

In this paper, we study hyperbolic rational maps with finitely connected Fatou sets. We construct models of post-critically finite hyperbolic tree mapping schemes for such maps, generalizing post-critically finite rational maps in the case of connected Julia set. We show they are general limits of rational maps as we quasiconformally stretch the dynamics. Conversely, we use quasiconformal surgery to show any post-critically finite hyperbolic tree mapping scheme arises as such a limit. We construct abundant examples thanks to the flexibilities of the models, and use them to construct a sequence of rational maps of a fixed degree with infinitely many non-monomial rescaling limits.

Moser's Shadow Problem

Moser's shadow problem asks to estimate the shadow function $\mathfrak{s}_b(n)$, which is the largest number such that for each bounded convex polyhedron $P$ with $n$ vertices in $3$-space there is some direction ${\bf v}$ (depending on $P$) such that, when illuminated by parallel light rays from infinity in direction ${\bf v}$, the polyhedron casts a shadow having at least $\mathfrak{s}_b(n)$ vertices. A general version of the problem allows unbounded polyhedra as well, and has associated shadow function $\mathfrak{s}_u(n)$. This paper presents correct order of magnitude asymptotic bounds on these functions. The bounded case has answer $\mathfrak{s}_b(n) = Θ\big( \log (n)/ (\log(\log (n))\big$. The unbounded shadow problem is shown to have the different asymptotic growth rate $\mathfrak{s}_u(n) = Θ\big(1\big)$. Results on the bounded shadow problem follow from 1989 work of Chazelle, Edelsbrunner and Guibas on the (bounded) silhouette span number $\mathfrak{s}_b^{\ast}(n)$, defined analogously but with arbitrary light sources. We complete the picture by showing that the unbounded silhouette span number $\mathfrak{s}_u^{\ast}(n)$ grows as $Θ\big( \log (n)/ (\log(\log (n))\big)$.

Colorings of the n-sphere and inversive geometry

This paper shows that in dimensions n \geq 2 for any partition of the set of points in the standard n-sphere \sum_{i=0}^n x_i^2 =1 in R^{n+1} into (n+3) or more nonempty sets, there exists a hyperplane in R^{n+1} that intersects at least (n+2) of these sets. This result is used to prove a result in inversive geometry. A mapping T: S^2 \to S^n, for n\geq 2,not assumed continuous or even measurable, is called weakly circle-preserving if the image of any circle is contained in some circle in the range space S^n. If such a map T has a range T(S^2) in circular general position, meaning that any circle in the S^n misses at least two points of T(S^2), then T must be a Mobius transformation of S^2.

Weakly Circle-Preserving Maps in Inversive Geometry

Let S^n be the standard n-sphere embedded in R^{n+1}. A mapping T: S^n \to S^n, not assumed continuous or even measurable, nor injective, is called weakly circle-preserving if the image of any circle under T is contained in some circle in the range space S^n. The main result of this paper shows that any weakly circle-preserving map satisfying a very mild condition on its range T(S^n) must be a Mobius transformation.
