A classification of postcritically finite Newton maps

The dynamical classification of rational maps is a central concern of holomorphic dynamics. Much progress has been made, especially on the classification of polynomials and some approachable one-parameter families of rational maps; the goal of finding a classification of general rational maps is so far elusive. Newton maps (rational maps that arise when applying Newton's method to a polynomial) form a most natural family to be studied from the dynamical perspective. Using Thurston's characterization and rigidity theorem, a complete combinatorial classification of postcritically finite Newton maps is given in terms of a finite connected graph satisfying certain explicit conditions.

Iterated monodromy groups of rational functions and periodic points over finite fields

Let qq be a prime power and ϕϕ a rational function with coefficients in a finite field Fq\mathbb{F}_q. For n≥1n \geq 1, each element of $\mathbb{P}^1(\F_{q^n})$ is either periodic or strictly preperiodic under iteration of ϕϕ. Denote by ana_n the proportion of periodic elements. Little is known about how ana_n changes as nn grows, unless ϕϕ is a power map or Chebyshev polynomial. We give the first results on this question for a wider class of rational functions: ana_n has lim inf 00 when qq is odd and ϕϕ is quadratic and neither Lattès nor conjugate to a one-parameter family of exceptional maps. We also show that ana_n has limit 00 when ϕϕ is a non-Chebyshev quadratic polynomial with strictly preperiodic finite critical point and qq is an odd square. Our methods yield additional results on periodic points for reductions of post-critically finite (PCF) rational functions defined over number fields. The difficulty of understanding ana_n in general is that $\mathbb{P}^1(\F_{q^n})$ is a finite set with no ambient geometry. In fact, ϕϕ can be lifted to a PCF rational map on the Riemann sphere, where we show that ana_n is given by counting elements of the iterated monodromy group (IMG) that act with fixed points at all levels of the tree of preimages. Using a martingale convergence theorem, we translate the problem to determining whether certain IMG elements exist. This in turn can be decisively addressed using the expansion of PCF rational maps in the orbifold metric.

On Deformation Space Analogies between Kleinian Reflection Groups and Antiholomorphic Rational Maps

In a previous paper, we constructed an explicit dynamical correspondence between certain Kleinian reflection groups and certain anti-holomorphic rational maps on the Riemann sphere. In this paper, we show that their deformation spaces share many striking similarities. We establish an analogue of Thurston's compactness theorem for critically fixed anti-rational maps. We also characterize how deformation spaces interact with each other and study the monodromy representations of the union of all deformation spaces.

Invisible Tricorns in Real Slices of Rational Maps

One of the conspicuous features of real slices of bicritical rational maps is the existence of Tricorn-type hyperbolic components. Such a hyperbolic component is called invisible if the non-bifurcating sub-arcs on its boundary do not intersect the closure of any other hyperbolic component. Numerical evidence suggests an abundance of invisible Tricorn-type components in real slices of bicritical rational maps. In this paper, we study two different families of real bicritical maps and characterize invisible Tricorn-type components in terms of suitable topological properties in the dynamical planes of the representative maps. We use this criterion to prove the existence of infinitely many invisible Tricorn-type components in the corresponding parameter spaces. Although we write the proofs for two specific families, our methods apply to generic families of real bicritical maps.

Puzzles and the Fatou-Shishikura injection for rational Newton maps

We establish a principle that we call the Fatou-Shishikura injection for Newton maps of polynomials: there is a dynamically natural injection from the set of non-repelling periodic orbits of any Newton map to the set of its critical orbits. This injection obviously implies the classical Fatou-Shishikura inequality, but it is stronger in the sense that every non-repelling periodic orbit has its own critical orbit. Moreover, for every Newton map we associate a forward invariant graph (a puzzle) which provides a dynamically defined partition of the Riemann sphere into closed topological disks (puzzle pieces). This puzzle construction is for rational Newton maps what Yoccoz puzzles are for polynomials: it provides the foundation for all kinds of rigidity results of Newton maps beyond our Fatou-Shishikura injection. Moreover, it gives necessary structure for a classification of the postcritically finite maps in the spirit of Thurston theory.
