Semiclassical asymptotic expansions for functions of the Bochner-Schrödinger operator

The Bochner-Schrödinger operator $H_{p}=\frac 1pΔ^{L^p\otimes E}+V$ on tensor powers $L^p$ of a Hermitian line bundle $L$ twisted by a Hermitian vector bundle $E$ on a Riemannian manifold of bounded geometry is studied. For any function $φ\in \mathcal S(\mathbb R)$, we consider the bounded linear operator $φ(H_p)$ in $L^2(X,L^p\otimes E)$ defined by the spectral theorem and describe an asymptotic expansion of its smooth Schwartz kernel in a fixed neighborhood of the diagonal in the semiclassical limit $p\to \infty$. In particular, we prove that the trace of the operator $φ(H_p)$ admits a complete asymptotic expansion in powers of $p^{-1/2}$ as $p\to \infty$.

Trace formula for the magnetic Laplacian at zero energy level

The paper is devoted to the trace formula for the magnetic Laplacian associated with a magnetic system on a compact manifold. This formula is a natural generalization of the semiclassical Gutzwiller trace formula and reduces to it in the case when the magnetic field form is exact. It differs somewhat from the Guillemin-Uribe trace formula studied in the author's previous work with I.A. Taimanov. Moreover, in contrast to that work, the focus is on the trace formula at the zero energy level, which is a critical energy level. The paper gives an overview of the main notions and results related to the trace formula at the zero energy level, describes various approaches to its proof, and gives concrete examples of its computation. In addition, a brief review of the Gutzwiller trace formula for regular and critical energy levels is given.

On asymptotic expansions of generalized Bergman kernels on symplectic manifolds

A full off-diagonal asymptotic expansion is established for the generalized Bergman kernels of the renormalized Bochner Laplacians associated with high tensor powers of a positive line bundle over a compact symplectic manifold. As an application, the algebra of Toeplitz operators on the symplectic manifold associated with the renormalized Bochner Laplacian is constructed.

Quasiclassical approximation for magnetic monopoles

A quasiclassical approximation is constructed to describe the eigenvalues of the magnetic Laplacian on a compact Riemannian manifold in the case when the magnetic field is not given by an exact 2-form. For this, the multidimensional WKB method in the form of Maslov canonical operator is applied. In this case, the canonical operator takes values in sections of a nontrivial line bundle. The constructed approximation is demonstrated for the Dirac magnetic monopole on the two-dimensional sphere.

Semiclassical spectral analysis of Toeplitz operators on symplectic manifolds: the case of discrete wells

We consider Toeplitz operators associated with the renormalized Bochner-Laplacian on high tensor powers of a positive line bundle on a compact symplectic manifold. We study the asymptotic behavior, in the semiclassical limit, of low-lying eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenfunctions of a self-adjoint Toeplitz operator under assumption that its principal symbol has a non-degenerate minimum with discrete wells. As an application, we prove upper bounds for low-lying eigenvalues of the Bochner-Laplacian in the semiclassical limit.

Trace formula for the magnetic Laplacian

The Guillemin-Uribe trace formula is a semiclassical version of the Selberg trace formula and more general Duistermaat-Guillemin formula for elliptic operators on compact manifolds, which reflects the dynamics of magnetic geodesic flows in terms of eigenvalues of a natural differential operator (the magnetic Laplacian) associated with the magnetic field. In this paper, we give a survey of basic notions and results related with the Guillemin-Uribe trace formula and provide concrete examples of its computation for two-dimensional constant curvature surfaces with constant magnetic fields and for the Katok example.

On a problem of geometry of numbers arising in spectral theory

We study a lattice point counting problem for a class of families of domains in a Euclidean space. This class consists of anisotropically expanding bounded domains, which remain unchanged along some fixed linear subspace and expand in directions, orthogonal to this subspace. We find the leading term in the asymptotics of the number of lattice points in such family of domains and prove remainder estimates in this asymptotics under various conditions on the lattice and the family of domains. As a consequence, we prove an asymptotic formula for the eigenvalue distribution function of the Laplace operator on a flat torus in adiabatic limit determined by a linear foliation with a nontrivial remainder estimate.

Riemannian foliations of bounded geometry

Continuing the study of bounded geometry for Riemannian foliations, begun by Sanguiao, we introduce a chart-free definition of this concept. Our main theorem states that it is equivalent to a condition involving certain normal foliation charts. For this type of charts, it is also shown that the derivatives of the changes of coordinates are uniformly bounded, and there are nice partitions of unity. Applications to a trace formula for foliated flows will given in a forthcoming paper.

Accurate semiclassical spectral asymptotics for a two-dimensional magnetic Schrödinger operator

We revisit the problem of semiclassical spectral asymptotics for a pure magnetic Schrödinger operator on a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold. We suppose that the minimal value $b_0$ of the intensity of the magnetic field is strictly positive, and the corresponding minimum is unique and non-degenerate. The purpose is to get the control on the spectrum in an interval $(hb_0, h(b_0 +γ_0)]$ for some $γ_0>0$ independent of the semiclassical parameter $h$. The previous papers by Helffer-Mohamed and by Helffer-Kordyukov were only treating the ground-state energy or a finite (independent of $h$) number of eigenvalues. Note also that N. Raymond and S. Vu Ngoc have recently developed a different approach of the same problem.

Semiclassical spectral asymptotics for a magnetic Schrödinger operator with non-vanishing magnetic field

We consider a magnetic Schrödinger operator $H^h$, depending on a semiclassical parameter $h>0$, on a compact Riemannian manifold. We assume that there is no electric field. We suppose that the minimal value $b_0$ of the intensity of the magnetic field $b$ is strictly positive. We give a survey of the results on asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of the operator $H^h$ in the semiclassical limit.

Classical and quantum ergodicity on orbifolds

We extend to orbifolds classical results on quantum ergodicity due to Shnirelman, Colin de Verdière and Zelditch, proving that, for any positive, first-order self-adjoint elliptic pseudodifferential operator P on a compact orbifold X with positive principal symbol p, ergodicity of the Hamiltonian flow of p implies quantum ergodicity for the operator P. We also prove ergodicity of the geodesic flow on a compact Riemannian orbifold of negative sectional curvature.

Eigenvalue estimates for a three-dimensional magnetic Schrödinger operator

We consider a magnetic Schrödinger operator $H^h=(-ih\nabla-\vec{A})^2$ with the Dirichlet boundary conditions in an open set $Ω\subset {\mathbb R}^3$, where $h>0$ is a small parameter. We suppose that the minimal value $b_0$ of the module $|\vec{B}|$ of the vector magnetic field $\vec{B}$ is strictly positive, and there exists a unique minimum point of $|\vec{B}|$, which is non-degenerate. The main result of the paper is upper estimates for the low-lying eigenvalues of the operator $H^h$ in the semiclassical limit. We also prove the existence of an arbitrary large number of spectral gaps in the semiclassical limit in the corresponding periodic setting.

The number of integer points in a family of anisotropically expanding domains

We investigate the remainder in the asymptotic formula for the number of integer points in a family of bounded domains in the Euclidean space, which remain unchanged along some linear subspace and expand in the directions, orthogonal to this subspace. We prove some estimates for the remainder, imposing additional assumptions on the boundary of the domain. We study the average remainder estimates, where the averages are taken over rotated images of the domain by a subgroup of the group SO(n) of orthogonal transformations of the Euclidean space R^n. Using these results, we improve the remainder estimate in the adiabatic limit formula for the eigenvalue distribution function of the Laplace operator associated with a bundle-like metric on a compact manifold equipped with a Riemannian foliation in the particular case when the foliation is a linear foliation on the torus and the metric is the standard Euclidean metric on the torus.

Integer points in domains and adiabatic limits

We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of integer points in a family of bounded domains in the Euclidean space with smooth boundary, which remain unchanged along some linear subspace and stretch out in the directions, orthogonal to this subspace. A more precise estimate for the remainder is obtained in the case when the domains are strictly convex. Using these results, we improved the remainder estimate in the adiabatic limit formula (due to the first author) for the eigenvalue distribution function of the Laplace operator associated with a bundle-like metric on a compact manifold equipped with a Riemannian foliation in a particular case when the foliation is a linear foliation on the torus and the metric is the standard Euclidean metric on the torus.

Semiclassical spectral asymptotics for a two-dimensional magnetic Schrödinger operator II: The case of degenerate wells

We continue our study of a magnetic Schrödinger operator on a two-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold in the case when the minimal value of the module of the magnetic field is strictly positive. We analyze the case when the magnetic field has degenerate magnetic wells. The main result of the paper is an asymptotics of the groundstate energy of the operator in the semiclassical limit. The upper bounds are improved in the case when we have a localization by a miniwell effect of lowest order. These results are applied to prove the existence of an arbitrary large number of spectral gaps in the semiclassical limit in the corresponding periodic setting.

Adiabatic limits and noncommutative Weyl formula

We discuss asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalue distribution of the differential form Laplacian on a Riemannian foliated manifold when the metric on the ambient manifold is blown up in directions normal to the leaves (in the adiabatic limit). Motivated by analogies with semiclassical spectral asymptotics, we use ideas and notions of noncommutative geometry to suggest a conjectural formula for the eigenvalue distribution in the adiabatic limit, which we call noncommutative Weyl formula. We review known results and discuss the correctness of the noncommutative Weyl formula in each case.
