Boundary value problem for the mean field equation on a compact Riemann surface

Let $(Σ,g)$ be a compact Riemann surface with smooth boundary $\partialΣ$, $Δ_g$ be the Laplace-Beltrami operator, and $h$ be a positive smooth function. Using a min-max scheme introduced by Djadli-Malchiodi (2006) and Djadli (2008), we prove that if $Σ$ is non-contractible, then for any $ρ\in(8kπ,8(k+1)π)$ with $k\in\mathbb{N}^\ast$, the mean field equation $$\left\{\begin{array}{lll} Δ_g u=ρ\frac{he^u}{\int_Σhe^udv_g}&{\rm in}&Σ\\[1.5ex] u=0&{\rm on}&\partialΣ\end{array}\right.$$ has a solution. This generalizes earlier existence results of Ding-Jost-Li-Wang (1999) and Chen-Lin (2003) in the Euclidean domain. Also we consider the corresponding Neumann boundary value problem. If $h$ is a positive smooth function, then for any $ρ\in(4kπ,4(k+1)π)$ with $k\in\mathbb{N}^\ast$, the mean field equation $$\left\{\begin{array}{lll} Δ_g u=ρ\left(\frac{he^u}{\int_Σhe^udv_g}-\frac{1}{|Σ|}\right)&{\rm in}&Σ\\[1.5ex] \partial u/\partial{\mathbf{v}}=0&{\rm on}&\partialΣ\end{array}\right.$$ has a solution, where $\mathbf{v}$ denotes the unit normal outward vector on $\partialΣ$. Note that in this case we do not require the surface to be non-contractible.

Mean field type equations on line bundle over a closed Riemann surface

Let $(\mathcal{L},\mathfrak{g})$ be a line bundle over a closed Riemann surface $(Σ,g)$, $Γ(\mathcal{L})$ be the set of all smooth sections, and $\mathcal{D}:Γ(\mathcal{L})\rightarrow T^\astΣ\otimes Γ(\mathcal{L})$ be a connection independent of the bundle metric $\mathfrak{g}$, where $T^\astΣ$ is the cotangent bundle. Suppose that there exists a global unit frame $ζ$ on $Γ({\mathcal{L}})$. Precisely for any $σ\inΓ(\mathcal{L})$, there exists a unique smooth function $u:Σ\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ such that $σ=uζ$ with $|ζ|\equiv 1$ on $Σ$. For any real number $ρ$, we define a functional $\mathcal{J}_ρ:W^{1,2}(Σ,\mathcal{L})\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ by $$\mathcal{J}_ρ(σ)=\frac{1}{2}\int_Σ|\mathcal{D} σ|^2dv_g+\fracρ {|Σ|}\int_Σ\langleσ,ζ\rangle dv_g-ρ\log\int_Σh e^{\langleσ,ζ\rangle}dv_g,$$ where $W^{1,2}(Σ,\mathcal{L})$ is a completion of $Γ(\mathcal{L})$ under the usual Sobolev norm, $|Σ|$ is the area of $(Σ,g)$, $h:Σ\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ is a strictly positive smooth function and $\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle$ is the inner product induced by $\mathfrak{g}$. The Euler-Lagrange equations of $\mathcal{J}_ρ$ are called mean field type equations. Write $\mathcal{H}_0=\{σ\in W^{1,2}(Σ,\mathcal{L}):\mathcal{D}σ=0\}$ and $$\mathcal{H}_1=\left\{σ\in W^{1,2}(Σ,\mathcal{L}):\int_Σ\langleσ,τ\rangle dv_g=0,\,\,\forall τ\in \mathcal{H}_0\right\}.$$ Based on the variational method, we prove that $\mathcal{J}_ρ$ has a constraint critical point on the space $\mathcal{H}_1$ for any $ρ<8π$; Based on blow-up analysis, we calculate the exact value of $\inf_{σ\in\mathcal{H}_1}\mathcal{J}_{8π}(σ)$, provided that it is not achieved by any $σ\in\mathcal{H}_1$;

Existence results for a generalized mean field equation on a closed Riemann surface

Let $Σ$ be a closed Riemann surface, $h$ a positive smooth function on $Σ$, $ρ$ and $α$ real numbers. In this paper, we study a generalized mean field equation \begin{align*} -Δu=ρ\left(\dfrac{he^u}{\int_Σhe^u}-\dfrac{1}{\mathrm{Area}\left(Σ\right)}\right)+α\left(u-\fint_Σu\right), \end{align*} where $Δ$ denotes the Laplace-Beltrami operator. We first derive a uniform bound for solutions when $ρ\in (8kπ, 8(k+1)π)$ for some non-negative integer number $k\in \mathbb{N}$ and $α\notin\mathrm{Spec}\left(-Δ\right)\setminus\set{0}$. Then we obtain existence results for $α<λ_1\left(Σ\right)$ by using the Leray-Schauder degree theory and the minimax method, where $λ_1\left(Σ\right)$ is the first positive eigenvalue for $-Δ$.

Trudinger-Moser inequalities on a closed Riemann surface with a symmetric conical metric

This is a continuation of our previous work [13]. Let $(Σ,g)$ be a closed Riemann surface, where the metric $g$ has conical singularities at finite points. Suppose $\mathbf{G}$ is a group whose elements are isometries acting on $(Σ,g)$. Trudinger-Moser inequalities involving $\mathbf{G}$ are established via the method of blow-up analysis, and the corresponding extremals are also obtained. This extends previous results of Chen [7], Iula-Manicini [21], and the authors [13].

Blow-up analysis involving isothermal coordinates on the boundary of compact Riemann surface

Using the method of blow-up analysis, we obtain two sharp Trudinger-Moser inequalities on a compact Riemann surface with smooth boundary, as well as the existence of the corresponding extremals. This generalizes early results of Chang-Yang [7] and the first named author [32], and complements Fontana's inequality of two dimensions [15]. The blow-up analysis in the current paper is far more elaborate than that of [32], and particularly clarifies several ambiguous points there. In precise, we prove the existence of isothermal coordinate systems near the boundary, the existence and uniform estimates of the Green function with the Neumann boundary condition. Also our analysis can be applied to the Kazdan-Warner problem and the Chern-Simons Higgs problem on compact Riemman surfaces with smooth boundaries.

Multiple solutions of Kazdan-Warner equation on graphs in the negative case

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite connected graph, and let $κ: V\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ be a function such that $\int_Vκdμ<0$. We consider the following Kazdan-Warner equation on $G$:\[Δu+κ-K_λe^{2u}=0,\] where $K_λ=K+λ$ and $K: V\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is a non-constant function satisfying $\max_{x\in V}K(x)=0$ and $λ\in \mathbb{R}$. By a variational method, we prove that there exists a $λ^*>0$ such that when $λ\in(-\infty,λ^*]$ the above equation has solutions, and has no solution when $λ\geq λ^\ast$. In particular, it has only one solution if $λ\leq 0$; at least two distinct solutions if $0<λ<λ^*$; at least one solution if $λ=λ^\ast$. This result complements earlier work of Grigor'yan-Lin-Yang \cite{GLY16}, and is viewed as a discrete analog of that of Ding-Liu \cite{DL95} and Yang-Zhu \cite{YZ19} on manifolds.

Extremal functions for singular Trudinger-Moser inequalities in the entire Euclidean space

In a previous work (Int. Math. Res. Notices 13 (2010) 2394-2426), Adimurthi-Yang proved a singular Trudinger-Moser inequality in the entire Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^N$ $(N\geq 2)$. Precisely, if $0\leq β<1$ and $0<γ\leq1-β$, then there holds for any $τ>0$, $$\sup_{u\in W^{1,N}(\mathbb{R}^N),\,\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}(|\nabla u|^N+τ|u|^N)dx\leq 1}\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}\frac{1}{|x|^{Nβ}}\left(e^{α_Nγ|u|^{\frac{N}{N-1}}}-\sum_{k=0}^{N-2}\frac{α_N^kγ^k|u|^{\frac{kN}{N-1}}} {k!}\right)dx<\infty,$$ where $α_N=Nω_{N-1}^{1/(N-1)}$ and $ω_{N-1}$ is the area of the unit sphere in $\mathbb{R}^N$. The above inequality is sharp in the sense that if $γ>1-β$, all integrals are still finite but the supremum is infinity. In this paper, we concern extremal functions for these singular inequalities. The regular case $β=0$ has been considered by Li-Ruf (Indiana Univ. Math. J. 57 (2008) 451-480) and Ishiwata (Math. Ann. 351 (2011) 781-804). We shall investigate the singular case $0<β<1$ and prove that for all $τ>0$, $0<β<1$ and $0<γ\leq 1-β$, extremal functions for the above inequalities exist. The proof is based on blow-up analysis.

Kazdan-Warner equation on graph

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite graph and $Δ$ be the usual graph Laplacian. Using the calculus of variations and a method of upper and lower solutions, we give various conditions such that the Kazdan-Warner equation $Δu=c-he^u$ has a solution on $V$, where $c$ is a constant, and $h:V\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ is a function. We also consider similar equations involving higher order derivatives on graph. Our results can be compared with the original manifold case of Kazdan-Warner (Ann. Math., 1974).

Yamabe type equations on graphs

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a locally finite graph, $Ω\subset V$ be a bounded domain, $Δ$ be the usual graph Laplacian, and $λ_1(Ω)$ be the first eigenvalue of $-Δ$ with respect to Dirichlet boundary condition. Using the mountain pass theorem due to Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz, we prove that if $α<λ_1(Ω)$, then for any $p>2$, there exists a positive solution to $-Δu-αu=|u|^{p-2}u$ in $Ω^\circ$, $u=0$ on $\partialΩ$, where $Ω^\circ$ and $\partialΩ$ denote the interior and the boundary of $Ω$ respectively. Also we consider similar problems involving the $p$-Laplacian and poly-Laplacian by the same method. Such problems can be viewed as discrete versions of the Yamabe type equations on Euclidean space or compact Riemannian manifolds.

A gradient estimate for positive functions on graphs

We derive a gradient estimate for positive functions, in particular for positive solutions to the heat equation, on finite or locally finite graphs. Unlike the well known Li-Yau estimate, which is based on the maximum principle, our estimate follows from the graph structure of the gradient form and the Laplacian operator. Though our assumption on graphs is slightly stronger than that of Bauer, Horn, Lin, Lippner, Mangoubi, and Yau (J. Differential Geom. 99 (2015) 359-405), our estimate can be easily applied to nonlinear differential equations, as well as differential inequalities. As applications, we estimate the greatest lower bound of Cheng's eigenvalue and an upper bound of the minimal heat kernel, which is recently studied by Bauer, Hua and Yau (Preprint, 2015) by the Li-Yau estimate. Moreover, generalizing an earlier result of Lin and Yau (Math. Res. Lett. 17 (2010) 343-356), we derive a lower bound of nonzero eigenvalues by our gradient estimate.

A Trudinger-Moser inequality on compact Riemannian surface involving Gaussian curvature

Motivated by a recent work of X. Chen and M. Zhu (Commun. Math. Stat., 1 (2013) 369-385), we establish a Trudinger-Moser inequality on compact Riemannian surface without boundary. The proof is based on blow-up analysis together with Carleson-Chang's result (Bull. Sci. Math. 110 (1986) 113-127). This inequality is different from the classical one, which is due to L. Fontana (Comment. Math. Helv., 68 (1993) 415-454), since the Gaussian curvature is involved. As an application, we improve Chen-Zhu's result as follows: A modified Liouville energy of conformal Riemannian metric has a uniform lower bound, provided that the Euler characteristic is nonzero and the volume of the conformal surface has a uniform positive lower bound.

An improved Hardy-Trudinger-Moser inequality

Let $\mathbb{B}$ be the unit disc in $\mathbb{R}^2$, $\mathscr{H}$ be the completion of $C_0^\infty(\mathbb{B})$ under the norm $$\|u\|_{\mathscr{H}}=\left(\int_\mathbb{B}|\nabla u|^2dx-\int_\mathbb{B}\frac{u^2}{(1-|x|^2)^2}dx\right)^{1/2},\quad\forall u\in C_0^\infty(\mathbb{B}).$$ Denote $λ_1(\mathbb{B})=\inf_{u\in \mathscr{H},\,\|u\|_2=1}\|u\|_{\mathscr{H}}^2$, where $\|\cdot\|_2$ stands for the $L^2(\mathbb{B})$-norm. Using blow-up analysis, we prove that for any $α$, $0\leq α<λ_1(\mathbb{B})$, $$\sup_{u\in\mathscr{H},\,\|u\|_{\mathscr{H}}^2-α\|u\|_2^2\leq 1}\int_\mathbb{B} e^{4πu^2}dx<+\infty,$$ and that the above supremum can be attained by some function $u\in \mathscr{H}$ with $\|u\|_{\mathscr{H}}^2-α\|u\|_2^2= 1$. This improves an earlier result of G. Wang and D. Ye [28].

Global gradient estimate on graph and its applications

Continuing our previous work (arXiv:1509.07981v1), we derive another global gradient estimate for positive functions, particularly for positive solutions to the heat equation on finite or locally finite graphs. In general, the gradient estimate in the present paper is independent of our previous one. As applications, it can be used to get an upper bound and a lower bound of the heat kernel on locally finite graphs. These global gradient estimates can be compared with the Li-Yau inequality on graphs contributed by Bauer, Horn, Lin, Lipper, Mangoubi and Yau (J. Differential Geom. 99 (2015) 359-409). In many topics, such as eigenvalue estimate and heat kernel estimate (not including the Liouville type theorems), replacing the Li-Yau inequality by the global gradient estimate, we can get similar results.

Quantization for an elliptic equation with critical exponential growth on compact Riemannian surface without boundary

In this paper, using blow-up analysis, we prove a quantization result for an elliptic equation with critical exponential growth on compact Riemannian surface without boundary. Similar results for Euclidean space were obtained by Adimurthi-Struwe \cite{Adi-Stru}, Druet \cite{Druet}, Lamm-Robert-Struwe \cite{L-R-S}, Martinazzi \cite{Mart}, Martinazzi-Struwe \cite{Mar-Stru}, and Struwe \cite{Struwe} respectively.

A new proof of subcritical Trudinger-Moser inequalities on the whole Euclidean space

In this note, we give a new proof of subcritical Trudinger-Moser inequality on $\mathbb{R}^n$. All the existing proofs on this inequality are based on the rearrangement argument with respect to functions in the Sobolev space $W^{1,n}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Our method avoids this technique and thus can be used in the Riemannian manifold case and in the entire Heisenberg group.

Trudinger-Moser inequalities on the entire Heisenberg group

Continuing our previous work (Cohn, Lam, Lu, Yang, Nonlinear Analysis (2011), doi: 10.1016 /j.na.2011.09.053), we obtain a class of Trudinger-Moser inequalities on the entire Heisenberg group, which indicate what the best constants are. All the existing proofs of similar inequalities on unbounded domain of the Euclidean space or the Heisenberg group are based on rearrangement argument. In this note, we propose a new approach to solve this problem. Specifically we get the global Trudinger-Moser inequality by gluing local estimates with the help of cut-off functions. Our method still works for similar problems when the Heisenberg group is replaced by the Eclidean space or complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds.

Adams type inequalities and related elliptic partial differential equations in dimension four

Motivated by Ruf-Sani's recent work, we prove an Adams type inequality and a singular Adams type inequality in the whole four dimensional Euclidean space. As applications of those inequalities, a class of elliptic partial differential equations are considered. Existence of nontrivial weak solutions and multiplicity results are obtained via the mountain-pass theorem and the Ekeland's variational principle. This is a continuation of our previous work about singular Trudinger-Moser type inequality.

Existence of positive solutions to quasi-linear elliptic equations with exponential growth in the whole Euclidean space

In this paper a quasi-linear elliptic equation in the whole Euclidean space is considered. The nonlinearity of the equation is assumed to have exponential growth or have critical growth in view of Trudinger-Moser type inequality. Under some assumptions on the potential and the nonlinearity, it is proved that there is a nontrivial positive weak solution to this equation. Also it is shown that there are two distinct positive weak solutions to a perturbation of the equation. The method of proving these results is combining Trudinger-Moser type inequality, Mountain-pass theorem and Ekeland's variational principle.

Smoothing metrics on closed Riemannian manifolds through the Ricci flow

Under the assumption of the uniform local Sobolev inequality, it is proved that Riemannian metrics with an absolute Ricci curvature bound and a small Riemannian curvature integral bound can be smoothed to having a sectional curvature bound. This partly extends previous a priori estimates of Ye Li (J. Geom. Anal. 17 (2007) 495-511; Advances in Mathematics 223 (2010) 1924-1957).

Trudinger-Moser inequalities on complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds

Though Trudinger-Moser inequalities on compact Riemannian manifolds or Euclidean space are well understood, we know little about them on complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds. In this paper, we established respectively necessary condition and sufficient condition under which Trudinger-Moser inequalities hold on complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds. For applications of such inequalities, we obtained existence results for some quasilinear equations with nonlinearity of exponential growth.

Nonexistence of quasi-harmonic sphere with large energy

Nonexistence of quasi-harmonic spheres is necessary for long time existence and convergence of harmonic map heat flows. Let $(N,h)$ be a complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds. Assume the universal covering of $(N,h)$ admits a nonnegative strictly convex function with polynomial growth. Then there is no quasi-harmonic spheres $u:\mathbb{R}^n\ra N$ such that $$\lim_{r\ra\infty}r^ne^{-\f{r^2}{4}}\int_{|x|\leq r}e^{-\f{|x|^2}{4}}|\nabla u|^2dx=0.$$ This generalizes a result of the first named author and X. Zhu (Calc. Var., 2009). Our method is essentially the Moser iteration and thus very simple.
