Holographic Wilson Loop One-point Functions in ABJM Theory

We compute the correlation function between a circular half-BPS Wilson loop (or straight Wilson line) and a local operator in ABJM theory utilizing its M-theory description. The local operator can be a $1/3$-BPS single-trace chiral primary operator or the stress-energy tensor. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, these correlators are dual to fluctuations of a probe M2-brane in $AdS_4 \times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_k$. We derive analytic results for both cases and compare them with existing results based on supersymmetric localization in the literature. In the large-$N$ limit with $k$ finite, our holograkphic results exhibit perfect agreement with localization.

Counting equivariant sheaves on K3 surfaces

We study the equivariant sheaf counting theory on K3 surfaces with finite group actions. Let $\sS=[S/G]$ be a global quotient stack, where $S$ is a K3 surface and $G$ is a finite group acting as symplectic homomorphisms on $S$. We show that the Joyce invariants counting Gieseker semistable sheaves on $\sS$ are independent on the Bridgeland stability conditions. As an application we prove the multiple cover formula of Y. Toda for the counting invariants for semistable sheaves on local K3 surfaces with a symplectic finite group action.

$\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$-deformed 1d Bose gas

$\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformation was originally proposed as an irrelevant solvable deformation for 2d relativistic quantum field theories (QFTs). The same family of deformations can also be defined for integrable quantum spin chains which was first studied in the context of integrability in AdS/CFT. In this paper, we construct such deformations for yet another type of models, which describe a collection of particles moving in 1d and interacting in an integrable manner. The prototype of such models is the Lieb-Liniger model. This shows that such deformations can be defined for a very wide range of systems. We study the finite volume spectrum and thermodynamics of the $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$-deformed Lieb-Liniger model. We find that for one sign of the deformation parameter $(λ<0)$, the deformed spectrum becomes complex when the volume of the system is smaller than certain critical value, signifying the break down of UV physics. For the other sign $(λ>0)$, there exists an upper bound for the temperature, similar to the Hagedorn behavior of the $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformed QFTs. Both behaviors can be attributed to the fact that $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformation changes the size the particles. We show that for $λ>0$, the deformation increases the spaces between particles which effectively increases the volume of the system. For $λ<0$, $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformation fattens point particles to finite size hard rods. This is similar to the observation that the action of $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$-deformed free boson is the Nambu-Goto action, which describes bosonic strings -- also an extended object with finite size.

A note on higher obstruction space for surface singularities

In this paper we collect some results on the obstruction spaces for rational surface singularities and minimally elliptic surface singularities. Based on the known results we calculate higher obstruction spaces for such surface singularities. The results imply that in general the higher obstruction spaces of deforming semi-log-canonical surfaces do not vanish. We apply the calculation result to show that there is no Li-Tian and Behrend-Fantechi style virtual fundamental class on such moduli space of semi-log-canonical surfaces.

Geometric Algebra and Algebraic Geometry of Loop and Potts Models

We uncover a connection between two seemingly separate subjects in integrable models: the representation theory of the affine Temperley-Lieb algebra, and the algebraic structure of solutions to the Bethe equations of the XXZ spin chain. We study the solution of Bethe equations analytically by computational algebraic geometry, and find that the solution space encodes rich information about the representation theory of Temperley-Lieb algebra. Using these connections, we compute the partition function of the completely-packed loop model and of the closely related random-cluster Potts model, on medium-size lattices with toroidal boundary conditions, by two quite different methods. We consider the partial thermodynamic limit of infinitely long tori and analyze the corresponding condensation curves of the zeros of the partition functions. Two components of these curves are obtained analytically in the full thermodynamic limit.

Three-Point Functions in ABJM and Bethe Ansatz

We develop an integrability-based framework to compute structure constants of two sub-determinant operators and a single-trace non-BPS operator in ABJM theory in the planar limit. In this first paper, we study them at weak coupling using a relation to an integrable spin chain. We first develop a nested Bethe ansatz for an alternating SU(4) spin chain that describes single-trace operators made out of scalar fields. We then apply it to the computation of the structure constants and show that they are given by overlaps between a Bethe eigenstate and a matrix product state. We conjecture that the determinant operator corresponds to an integrable matrix product state and present a closed-form expression for the overlap, which resembles the so-called Gaudin determinant. We also provide evidence for the integrability of general sub-determinant operators. The techniques developed in this paper can be applied to other quantities in ABJM theory including three-point functions of single-trace operators.

A pedagogical review on solvable irrelevant deformations of 2d quantum field theory

This is a pedagogical review on $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformation of two dimensional quantum field theories. It is based on three lectures which the author gave at ITP-CAS in December 2018. This review consists of four parts. The first part is a general introduction to $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformation. Special emphasises are put on the deformed classical Lagrangian and the exact solvability of the spectrum. The second part focuses on the torus partition sum of the $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$/$\mathrm{J}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformed conformal field theories and modular invariance/covariance. In the third part, different perspectives of $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformation are presented, including its relation to random geometry, 2d topological gravity and holography. We summarize more recent developments until January 2021 in the last part.

D-branes and Orbit Average

We study correlation functions of D-branes and a supergravity mode in AdS, which are dual to structure constants of two sub-determinant operators with large charge and a BPS single-trace operator. Our approach is inspired by the large charge expansion of CFT and resolves puzzles and confusions in the literature on the holographic computation of correlation functions of heavy operators. In particular, we point out two important effects which are often missed in the literature; the first one is an average over classical configurations of the heavy state, which physically amounts to projecting the state to an eigenstate of quantum numbers. The second one is the contribution from wave functions of the heavy state. To demonstrate the power of the method, we first analyze the three-point functions in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills and reproduce the results in field theory from holography, including the cases for which the previous holographic computation gives incorrect answers. We then apply it to ABJM theory and make solid predictions at strong coupling. Finally we comment on possible applications to states dual to black holes and fuzzballs.

Irrelevant Deformations with Boundaries and Defects

We initiate the study of $T\bar T$-like irrelevant solvable deformations in quantum field theory with boundaries and defects. For this purpose, we employ a general formalism developed in the context of spin chains, which allows us to derive both, the deformed bulk and boundary/defect scattering matrices of integrable models. Using the deformed scattering matrices, we derive the flow equation for the deformed finite volume spectrum, as well as the cylinder partition function and the exact $g$-function.

Cylinder partition function of the 6-vertex model from algebraic geometry

We compute the exact partition function of the isotropic 6-vertex model on a cylinder geometry with free boundary conditions, for lattices of intermediate size, using Bethe ansatz and algebraic geometry. We perform the computations in both the open and closed channels. We also consider the partial thermodynamic limits, whereby in the open (closed) channel, the open (closed) direction is kept small while the other direction becomes large. We compute the zeros of the partition function in the two partial thermodynamic limits, and compare with the condensation curves.

Expectation value of $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ operator in curved spacetimes

We study the expectation value of the $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ operator in spacetimes with constant curvature. We define an diffeomorphism invariant biscalar whose coinciding limit gives the expectation value of the $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ operator. We show that this biscalar is a constant in flat spacetime, which reproduces Zamolodchikov's result in 2004. For spacetimes with non-zero curvature, we show that this is no longer true and the expectation value of the $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ operator depends on both the one-point and two-point functions of the stress-energy tensor.

On exact overlaps in integrable spin chains

We develop a new method to compute the exact overlaps between integrable boundary states and on-shell Bethe states for integrable spin chains. Our method is based on the coordinate Bethe Ansatz and does not rely on the "rotation trick" of the corresponding lattice model. It leads to a rigorous proof of the factorized overlap formulas in a number of cases, some of which were inaccessible to earlier methods. As concrete examples, we consider the compact XXX and XXZ Heisenberg spin chains, and the non-compact $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ spin chain.

Structure Constants in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM at Finite Coupling as Worldsheet $g$-Function

We develop a novel nonperturbative approach to a class of three-point functions in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM based on Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA). More specifically, we study three-point functions of a non-BPS single-trace operator and two determinant operators dual to maximal Giant Graviton D-branes in AdS$_5\times$S$^{5}$. They correspond to disk one-point functions on the worldsheet and admit a simpler and more powerful integrability description than the standard single-trace three-point functions. We first introduce two new methods to efficiently compute such correlators at weak coupling; one based on large $N$ collective fields, which provides an example of open-closed-open duality discussed by Gopakumar, and the other based on combinatorics. The results so obtained exhibit a simple determinant structure and indicate that the correlator can be interpreted as a generalization of $g$-functions in 2d QFT; an overlap between an integrable boundary state and a state corresponding to the single-trace operator. We then determine the boundary state at finite coupling using the symmetry, the crossing equation and the boundary Yang-Baxter equation. With the resulting boundary state, we derive the ground-state $g$-function based on TBA and conjecture its generalization to other states. This is the first fully nonperturbative proposal for the structure constants of operators of finite length. The results are tested extensively at weak and strong couplings. Finally, we point out that determinant operators can provide better probes of sub-AdS locality than single-trace operators and discuss possible applications.

$T\bar T$-deformation and long range spin chains

We point out that two classes of deformations of integrable models, developed completely independently, have deep connections and share the same algebraic origin. One class includes the $T\bar T$-deformation of 1+1 dimensional integrable quantum field theory and related solvable irrelevant deformations proposed recently. The other class is a specific type of long range integrable deformation of quantum spin chains introduced a decade ago, in the context of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super-Yang-Mills theory. We show that the detailed structures of the two deformations are formally identical and therefore share many features. Both deformations preserve integrability and lead to non-local deformed theories, resulting in a change of the corresponding factorized S-matrices. We also prove a factorisation formula for the expectation value of the operators which trigger the deformation on the lattice; similar results in quantum field theory play an essential role in the solvability of such deformations. We point out that the long range deformation is a natural counterpart of the $T\bar T$-deformation for integrable spin chains, and argue that this observation leads to interesting new avenues to explore.

Clustering and the Three-Point Function

We develop analytical methods for computing the structure constant for three heavy operators, starting from the recently proposed hexagon approach. Such a structure constant is a semiclassical object, with the scale set by the inverse length of the operators playing the role of the Planck constant. We reformulate the hexagon expansion in terms of multiple contour integrals and recast it as a sum over clusters generated by the residues of the measure of integration. We test the method on two examples. First, we compute the asymptotic three-point function of heavy fields at any coupling and show the result in the semiclassical limit matches both the string theory computation at strong coupling and the tree-level results obtained before. Second, in the case of one non-BPS and two BPS operators at strong coupling we sum up all wrapping corrections associated with the opposite bridge to the non-trivial operator, or the "bottom" mirror channel. We also give an alternative interpretation of the results in terms of a gas of fermions and show that they can be expressed compactly as an operator-valued super-determinant.

Diagonal form factors and hexagon form factors

We study the heavy-heavy-light (HHL) three-point functions in the planar N = 4 super-Yang- Mills theory using the recently proposed hexagon bootstrap program [arXiv:1505.06745]. We prove the conjecture of Bajnok, Janik and Wereszczynski [arXiv:1404.4556] on the polynomial L-dependence of HHL structure constant up to the leading finite-size corrections, where L is the length of the heavy operators. The proof is presented for a specific set-up but the method can be applied to more general situations.

The Thom-Sebastiani theorem for the Euler characteristic of cyclic L-infinity algebras

Let $L$ be a cyclic $L_\infty$-algebra of dimension $3$ with finite dimensional cohomology only in dimension one and two. By transfer theorem there exists a cyclic $L_\infty$-algebra structure on the cohomology $H^*(L)$. The inner product plus the higher products of the cyclic $L_\infty$-algebra defines a superpotential function $f$ on $H^1(L)$. We associate with an analytic Milnor fiber for the formal function $f$ and define the Euler characteristic of $L$ is to be the Euler characteristic of the étale cohomology of the analytic Milnor fiber. In this paper we prove a Thom-Sebastiani type formula for the Euler characteristic of cyclic $L_\infty$-algebras. As applications we prove the Joyce-Song formulas about the Behrend function identities for semi-Schur objects in the derived category of coherent sheaves over Calabi-Yau threefolds. A motivic Thom-Sebastiani type formula and a conjectural motivic Joyce-Song formulas for the motivic Milnor fiber of cyclic $L_\infty$-algebras are also discussed.

Diagonal Form Factors and Heavy-Heavy-Light Three-Point Functions at Weak Coupling

In this paper we consider a special kind of three-point functions of HHL type at weak coupling in N=4 SYM theory and analyze its volume dependence. At strong coupling this kind of three-point functions were studied recently by Bajnok, Janik and Wereszczynski [1]. The authors considered some cases of HHL correlator in the su(2) sector and, relying on their explicit results, formulated a conjecture about the form of the volume dependence of the symmetric HHL structure constant to be valid at any coupling up to wrapping corrections. In order to test this hypothesis we considered the HHL correlator in su(2) sector at weak coupling and directly showed that, up to one loop, the finite volume dependence has exactly the form proposed in [1]. Another side of the conjecture suggests that computation of the symmetric structure constant is equivalent to computing the corresponding set of infinite volume form factors, which can be extracted as the coefficients of finite volume expansion. In this sense, extracting appropriate coefficients from our result gives a prediction for the corresponding infinite volume form factors.

Donaldson-Thomas invariants of Calabi-Yau orbifolds under flops

We study the Donaldson-Thomas type invariants for the Calabi-Yau threefold Deligne-Mumford stacks under flops. A crepant birational morphism between two smooth Calabi-Yau threefold Deligne-Mumford stacks is called an orbifold flop if the flopping locus is the quotient of weighted projective lines by a cyclic group action. We prove that the Donaldson-Thomas invariants are preserved under orbifold flops.

From Spin Vertex to String Vertex

In the recent publication arXiv:1410.8860 the spin vertex was introduced as a new approach for computing three-point functions in N = 4 SYM. In this note we consider the BMN limit of the spin vertex for scalar excitations and show that it reproduces the string vertex in the light-cone string field theory which describes the string interactions in the pp-wave background at the leading order of BMN expansion. This is achieved by introducing a polynomial representation for the spin vertex. We derive the Neumann coefficients from the spin vertex at weak coupling and show they match with the Neumann coefficients from the string field theory.

Pro-Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class for DM stacks

We generalize the definition of Pro-Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson (Pro-CSM) class of Aluffi for schemes to not necessarily proper DM stacks. The Pro-CSM class of constructible functions on a DM stack $\cX$ can be similarly defined. In the case that $\cX$ is proper, the Pro-CSM class of the Behrend function of $\cX$ is the same as the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson (CSM) class for the Behrend function. The integration of this class over $\cX$ gives rise to the weighted Euler characteristic corresponding to the Behrend function, thus proving a conjecture of Behrend.

String Bits and the Spin Vertex

We initiate a novel formalism for computing correlation functions of trace operators in the planar N=4 SYM theory. The central object in our formalism is the spin vertex, which is the weak coupling analogy of the string vertex in string field theory. We construct the spin vertex explicitly for all sectors at the leading order using a set of bosonic and fermionic oscillators. We prove that the vertex has trivial monodromy, or put in other words, it is a Yangian invariant. Since the monodromy of the vertex is the product of the monodromies of the three states, the Yangian invariance of the vertex implies an infinite exact symmetry for the three-point function. We conjecture that this infinite symmetry can be lifted to any loop order.

The hexagon in the mirror: the three-point function in the SoV representation

We derive an integral expression for the leading-order type I-I-I three-point functions in the $\mathfrak{su}(2) $-sector of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory, for which no determinant formula is known. To this end, we first map the problem to the partition function of the six vertex model with a hexagonal boundary. The advantage of the six-vertex model expression is that it reveals an extra symmetry of the problem, which is the invariance under 90$^{\circ}$ rotation. On the spin-chain side, this corresponds to the exchange of the quantum space and the auxiliary space and is reminiscent of the mirror transformation employed in the worldsheet S-matrix approaches. After the rotation, we then apply Sklyanin's separation of variables (SoV) and obtain a multiple-integral expression of the three-point function. The resulting integrand is expressed in terms of the so-called Baxter polynomials, which is closely related to the quantum spectral curve approach. Along the way, we also derive several new results about the SoV, such as the explicit construction of the basis with twisted boundary conditions and the overlap between the orginal SoV state and the SoV states on the subchains.

Fixing the Quantum Three-Point Function

We propose a new method for the computation of quantum three-point functions for operators in su(2) sectors of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. The method is based on the existence of a unitary transformation relating inhomogeneous and long-range spin chains. This transformation can be traced back to a combination of boost operators and an inhomogeneous version of Baxter's corner transfer matrix. We reproduce the existing results for the one-loop structure constants in a simplified form and indicate how to use the method at higher loop orders. Then we evaluate the one-loop structure constants in the quasiclassical limit and compare them with the recent strong coupling computation.

A tree-level 3-point function in the su(3)-sector of planar N=4 SYM

We classify the 3-point functions of local gauge-invariant single-trace operators in the scalar sector of planar N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills involving at least one su(3) operator. In the case of two su(3) and one su(2) operators, the tree-level 3-point function can be expressed in terms of scalar products of su(3) Bethe vectors. Moreover, if the second level Bethe roots of one of the su(3) operators is trivial (set to infinity), this 3-point function can be written in a determinant form. Using the determinant representation, we evaluate the structure constant in the semi-classical limit, when the number of roots goes to infinity.

Gromov-Witten theory of root gerbes I: structure of genus $0$ moduli spaces

Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective algebraic variety. Given a line bundle $\mathcal{L}$ over $X$ and an integer $r>1$ one defines the stack $\sqrt[r]{\mathcal{L}/X}$ of $r$-th roots of $\mathcal{L}$. Motivated by Gromov-Witten theoretic questions, in this paper we analyze the structure of moduli stacks of genus $0$ twisted stable maps to $\sqrt[r]{\mathcal{L}/X}$. Our main results are explicit constructions of moduli stacks of genus $0$ twisted stable maps to $\sqrt[r]{\mathcal{L}/X}$ starting from moduli stack of genus $0$ stable maps to $X$. As a consequence, we prove an exact formula expressing genus $0$ Gromov-Witten invariants of $\sqrt[r]{\mathcal{L}/X}$ in terms of those of $X$.

Motivic Milnor fiber of cyclic L-infinity algebras

We define motivic Milnor fiber of cyclic $L_\infty$-algebras of dimension three using the method of Denef and Loeser of motivic integration. It is proved by Nicaise and Sebag that the topological Euler characteristic of the motivic Milnor fiber is equal to the Euler characteristic of the étale cohomology of the analytic Milnor fiber. We prove that the value of Behrend function on the germ moduli space determined by $L$ is equal to the Euler characteristic of the analytic Milnor fiber. Thus we prove that Behrend function depends only on the formal neighborhood of the moduli space.

Gromov-Witten theory of product stacks

Let $\mathcal{X}_1$ and $\mathcal{X}_2$ be smooth proper Deligne-Mumford stacks with projective coarse moduli spaces. We prove a formula for orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of the product stack $\mathcal{X}_1\times \mathcal{X}_2$ in terms of Gromov-Witten invariants of the factors $\mathcal{X}_1$ and $\mathcal{X}_2$. As an application, we deduce a decomposition result for Gromov-Witten theory of trivial gerbes.
