On symmetry operators for the Maxwell equation on the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetime

We focus on the method recently proposed by Lunin and Frolov-Krtouš-Kubizňák to solve the Maxwell equation on the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetime by separation of variables. In their method, it is crucial that the background spacetime has hidden symmetries because they generate commuting symmetry operators with which the separation of variables can be achieved. In this work we reproduce these commuting symmetry operators in a covariant fashion. We first review the procedure known as the Eisenhart-Duval lift to construct commuting symmetry operators for given equations of motion. Then we apply this procedure to the Lunin-Frolov-Krtouš-Kubizňák (LFKK) equation. It is shown that the commuting symmetry operators obtained for the LFKK equation coincide with the ones previously obtained by Frolov-Krtouš-Kubizňák, up to first-order symmetry operators corresponding to Killing vector fields. We also address the Teukolsky equation on the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetime and its symmetry operator is constructed.

Hidden symmetry and the separability of the Maxwell equation on the Wahlquist spacetime

We examine hidden symmetry and its relation to the separability of the Maxwell equation on the Wahlquist spacetime. After seeing that the Wahlquist spacetime is a type-D spacetime whose repeated principal null directions are shear-free and geodesic, we show that the spacetime admits three gauged conformal Killing-Yano (GCKY) tensors which are in a relation with torsional conformal Killing-Yano tensors. As a by-product, we obtain an ordinary CKY tensor. We also show that thanks to the GCKY tensors, the Maxwell equation reduces to three Debye equations, which are scalar-type equations, and two of them can be solved by separation of variables.

Separability of Maxwell equation in rotating black hole spacetime and its geometric aspects

Recently a new formalism for perturbations of Maxwell's equations on the background of the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetime was proposed, with which the equations are reduced to a equation of motion of a scalar field that can be solved by separation of variables. In this formalism the differential operators that commute with the operators of the equations of motion, called symmetry operators, played a key role to establish the separable structure. In this work we propose a method to reproduce these commuting symmetry operators in terms of the geometric quantities associated to the hidden symmetry of the background spacetime.

A simple test for spacetime symmetry

This paper presents a simple method for investigating spacetime symmetry for a given metric. The method makes use of the curvature conditions that are obtained from the Killing equations. We use the solutions of the curvature conditions to compute an upper bound on the number of Killing vector fields, as well as Killing-Yano tensors and closed conformal Killing-Yano tensors. We also use them in the integration of the Killing equations. By means of the method, we thoroughly investigate Killing-Yano symmetry of type D vacuum solutions such as the Kerr metric in four dimensions. The method is also applied to a large variety of physical metrics in four and five dimensions.

Supersymmetric heterotic solutions via non-SU(3) standard embedding

A supersymmetric solution to type II supergravity is constructed by superposing two hyperkählers with torsion metrics. The solution is given by a Käler with torsion metric with $SU(3)$ holonomy. The metric is embedded into a heterotic solution obeying the Strominger system, together with a Yang-Mills instanton obtained by the standard embedding. T dualities lead to an $SO(6)$ instanton describing a symmetry breaking from $E_8$ to $SO(10)$. The compactification by taking a periodic array yields a supersymmetric domain wall solution of heterotic supergravity.

General Wahlquist Metrics in All Dimensions

It is shown that the Wahlquist metric, which is a stationary, axially symmetric perfect fluid solution with $ρ+3p=\text{const.}$, admits a rank-2 generalized closed conformal Killing-Yano tensor with a skew-symmetric torsion. Taking advantage of the presence of such a tensor, we obtain a higher-dimensional generalization of the Wahlquist metric in arbitrary dimensions, including a family of vacuum black hole solutions with spherical horizon topology such as Schwarzschild-Tangherlini, Myers-Perry and higher-dimensional Kerr-NUT-(A)dS metrics and a family of static, spherically symmetric perfect fluid solutions in higher dimensions.

Heterotic Solutions with G2 and Spin(7) Structures

We study supersymmetric solutions in 7- and 8-dimensional Abelian heterotic supergravity theories. In dimension 7, the solutions are described by $G_{2}$ with torsion equations. When a $G_{2}$ manifold has principal orbits $S^{3} \times S^{3}$, the equations are reduced to ordinary differential equations with four radial functions. For these equations we obtain explicit ALC metrics with $S^{3}$-bolt and $T^{1,1}$-bolt singularities. In dimension 8, we study supersymmetric solutions to $Spin(7)$ with torsion equations associated with 3-Sasakian manifolds by using a similar method to the case $G_{2}$.

A Deformation of Sasakian Structure in the Presence of Torsion and Supergravity Solutions

We discuss a deformation of Sasakian structure in the presence of totally skew-symmetric torsion by introducing odd dimensional manifolds whose metric cones are Kähler with torsion. It is shown that such a geometry inherits similar properties to those of Sasakian geometry. As an example of them, we present an explicit expression of local metrics and see how Sasakian structure is deformed by the presence of torsion. We also demonstrate that our example of the metrics admits the existence of hidden symmetries described by non-trivial odd-rank generalized closed conformal Killing-Yano tensors. Furthermore, using these metrics as an {\it ansatz}, we construct exact solutions in five dimensional minimal (un-)gauged supergravity and eleven dimensional supergravity. Finally, we discuss the global structures of the solutions and obtain regular metrics on compact manifolds in five dimensions, which give natural generalizations of Sasaki--Einstein manifolds $Y^{p,q}$ and $L^{a,b,c}$. We also discuss regular metrics on non-compact manifolds in eleven dimensions.

Local metrics admitting a principal Killing-Yano tensor with torsion

In this paper we initiate a classification of local metrics admitting the principal Killing--Yano tensor with a skew-symmetric torsion. It is demonstrated that in such spacetimes rank-2 Killing tensors occur naturally and mutually commute. We reduce the classification problem to that of solving a set of partial differential equations, and we present some solutions to these PDEs. In even dimensions, three types of local metrics are obtained: one of them naturally generalizes the torsionless case while the others occur only when the torsion is present. In odd dimensions, we obtain more varieties of local metrics. The explicit metrics constructed in this paper are not the most general possible admitting the required symmetry, nevertheless, it is demonstrated that they cover a wide variety of solutions of various supergravities, such as the Kerr-Sen black holes of (un-)gauged abelian heterotic supergravity, the Chong-Cvetic-Lü-Pope black hole solution of five-dimensional minimal supergravity, or the Kähler with torsion manifolds. The relation between generalized Killing--Yano tensors and various torsion Killing spinors is also discussed.

Hidden Symmetry and Exact Solutions in Einstein Gravity

Conformal Killing-Yano tensors are introduced as a generalization of Killing vectors. They describe symmetries of higher-dimensional rotating black holes. In particular, a rank-2 closed conformal Killing-Yano tensor generates the tower of both hidden symmetries and isometries. We review a classification of higher-dimensional spacetimes admitting such a tensor, and present exact solutions to the Einstein equations for these spacetimes.

Generalized hidden symmetries and the Kerr-Sen black hole

We elaborate on basic properties of generalized Killing-Yano tensors which naturally extend Killing-Yano symmetry in the presence of skew-symmetric torsion. In particular, we discuss their relationship to Killing tensors and the separability of various field equations. We further demonstrate that the Kerr-Sen black hole spacetime of heterotic string theory, as well as its generalization to all dimensions, possesses a generalized closed conformal Killing-Yano 2-form with respect to a torsion identified with the 3-form occuring naturally in the theory. Such a 2-form is responsible for complete integrability of geodesic motion as well as for separability of the scalar and Dirac equations in these spacetimes.

Generalized Killing-Yano equations in D=5 gauged supergravity

We propose a generalization of the (conformal) Killing-Yano equations relevant to D=5 minimal gauged supergravity. The generalization stems from the fact that the dual of the Maxwell flux, the 3-form *F, couples naturally to particles in the background as a `torsion'. Killing-Yano tensors in the presence of torsion preserve most of the properties of the standard Killing-Yano tensors, exploited recently for the higher-dimensional rotating black holes of vacuum gravity with cosmological constant. In particular, the generalized closed conformal Killing-Yano 2-form gives rise to the tower of generalized closed conformal Killing-Yano tensors of increasing rank which in turn generate the tower of Killing tensors. An example of a generalized Killing-Yano tensor is found for the Chong-Cvetic-Lu-Pope black hole spacetime [hepth/0506029]. Such a tensor stands behind the separability of the Hamilton-Jacobi, Klein-Gordon, and Dirac equations in this background.

Separability of Gravitational Perturbation in Generalized Kerr-NUT-de Sitter Spacetime

Generalized Kerr-NUT-de Sitter spacetime is the most general spacetime which admits a rank-2 closed conformal Killing-Yano tensor. It contains the higher-dimensional Kerr-de Sitter black holes with partially equal angular momenta. We study the separability of gravitational perturbations in the generalized Kerr-NUT-de Sitter spacetime. We show that a certain type of tensor perturbations admits the separation of variables. The linearized perturbation equations for the Einstein condition are transformed into the ordinary differential equations of Fuchs type.

Symmetries of the Dirac operator with skew-symmetric torsion

In this paper, we consider the symmetries of the Dirac operator derived from a connection with skew-symmetric torsion. We find that the generalized conformal Killing-Yano tensors give rise to symmetry operators of the massless Dirac equation, provided an explicitly given anomaly vanishes. We show that this gives rise to symmetries of the Dirac operator in the case of strong Kahler with torsion (KT) and strong hyper-Kahler with torsion (HKT) manifolds.

Scalar Laplacian on Sasaki-Einstein Manifolds Y^{p,q}

We study the spectrum of the scalar Laplacian on the five-dimensional toric Sasaki-Einstein manifolds Y^{p,q}. The eigenvalue equation reduces to Heun's equation, which is a Fuchsian equation with four regular singularities. We show that the ground states, which are given by constant solutions of Heun's equation, are identified with BPS states corresponding to the chiral primary operators in the dual quiver gauge theories. The excited states correspond to non-trivial solutions of Heun's equation. It is shown that these reduce to polynomial solutions in the near BPS limit.

Seven-dimensional Einstein Manifolds from Tod-Hitchin Geometry

We construct infinitely many seven-dimensional Einstein metrics of weak holonomy G_2. These metrics are defined on principal SO(3) bundles over four-dimensional Bianchi IX orbifolds with the Tod-Hitchin metrics. The Tod-Hitchin metric has an orbifold singularity parameterized by an integer, and is shown to be similar near the singularity to the Taub-NUT de Sitter metric with a special charge. We show, however, that the seven-dimensional metrics on the total space are actually smooth. The geodesics on the weak G_2 manifolds are discussed. It is shown that the geodesic equation is equivalent to the Hamiltonian equation of an interacting rigid body system. We also discuss M-theory on the product space of AdS_4 and the seven-dimensional manifolds, and the dual gauge theories in three-dimensions.

Harmonic Forms and Deformation of ALC metrics with Spin(7) holonomy

Asymptotically locally conical (ALC) metric of exceptional holonomy has an asymptotic circle bundle structure that accommodates the M theory circle in type IIA reduction. Taking Spin(7) metrics of cohomogeneity one as explicit examples, we investigate deformations of ALC metrics, in particular that change the asymptotic S^1 radius related to the type IIA string coupling constant. When the canonical four form of Spin(7) holonomy is taken to be anti-self-dual, the deformations of Spin(7) metric are related to the harmonic self-dual four forms, which are given by solutions to a system of first order differential equations, due to the metric ansatz of cohomogeneity one. We identify the L^2-normalizable solution that deforms the asymptotic radius of the M theory circle.

Differential Geometry of the Vortex Filament Equation

Differential calculus on the space of asymptotically linear curves is developed. The calculus is applied to the vortex filament equation in its Hamiltonian description. The recursion operator generating the infinite sequence of commuting flows is shown to be hereditary. The system is shown to have a description with a Hamiltonian pair. Master symmetries are found and are applied to deriving an expression of the constants of motion in involution. The expression agrees with the inspection of Langer and Perline.
