The First Order Symmetry Operator on Gravitational Perturbations in the 5-dimensional Myers-Perry Spacetime with Equal Angular Momenta

It has been revealed that the first order symmetry operator for the linearized Einstein equation on a vacuum spacetime can be constructed from a Killing-Yano 3-form. This might be used to construct all or part of solutions to the field equation. In this paper, we perform a mode decomposition of a metric perturbation on the Schwarzschild spacetime and the Myers-Perry spacetime with equal angular momenta in 5 dimensions, and investigate the action of the symmetry operator on specific modes concretely. We show that on such spacetimes, there is no transition between the modes of a metric perturbation by the action of the symmetry operator, and it ends up being the linear combination of the infinitesimal transformations of isometry.

On symmetry operators for the Maxwell equation on the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetime

We focus on the method recently proposed by Lunin and Frolov-Krtouš-Kubizňák to solve the Maxwell equation on the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetime by separation of variables. In their method, it is crucial that the background spacetime has hidden symmetries because they generate commuting symmetry operators with which the separation of variables can be achieved. In this work we reproduce these commuting symmetry operators in a covariant fashion. We first review the procedure known as the Eisenhart-Duval lift to construct commuting symmetry operators for given equations of motion. Then we apply this procedure to the Lunin-Frolov-Krtouš-Kubizňák (LFKK) equation. It is shown that the commuting symmetry operators obtained for the LFKK equation coincide with the ones previously obtained by Frolov-Krtouš-Kubizňák, up to first-order symmetry operators corresponding to Killing vector fields. We also address the Teukolsky equation on the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetime and its symmetry operator is constructed.

Hidden symmetry and the separability of the Maxwell equation on the Wahlquist spacetime

We examine hidden symmetry and its relation to the separability of the Maxwell equation on the Wahlquist spacetime. After seeing that the Wahlquist spacetime is a type-D spacetime whose repeated principal null directions are shear-free and geodesic, we show that the spacetime admits three gauged conformal Killing-Yano (GCKY) tensors which are in a relation with torsional conformal Killing-Yano tensors. As a by-product, we obtain an ordinary CKY tensor. We also show that thanks to the GCKY tensors, the Maxwell equation reduces to three Debye equations, which are scalar-type equations, and two of them can be solved by separation of variables.

Separability of Maxwell equation in rotating black hole spacetime and its geometric aspects

Recently a new formalism for perturbations of Maxwell's equations on the background of the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetime was proposed, with which the equations are reduced to a equation of motion of a scalar field that can be solved by separation of variables. In this formalism the differential operators that commute with the operators of the equations of motion, called symmetry operators, played a key role to establish the separable structure. In this work we propose a method to reproduce these commuting symmetry operators in terms of the geometric quantities associated to the hidden symmetry of the background spacetime.

Killing-Yano tensor and supersymmetry of the self-dual Plebanski-Demianski solution

We explore various aspects of the self-dual Plebański-Demiański family in the Euclidean Einstein-Maxwell-$Λ$ system. The Killing-Yano tensor which was recently found by Yasui and one of the present authors allows us to prove that the self-dual Plebański-Demiański metric can be brought into the self-dual Carter metric by an orientation-reversing coordinate transformation. We show that the self-dual Plebański-Demiański solution admits two independent Killing spinors in the framework of $N=2$ minimal gauged supergravity, whereas the non-self-dual solution admits only a single Killing spinor. This can be demonstrated by casting the self-dual Plebański-Demiański metric into two distinct Przanowski-Tod forms. As a by-product, a new example of the three-dimensional Einstein-Weyl space is presented. We also prove that the self-dual Plebański-Demiański metric falls into two different Calderbank-Pedersen families, which are determined by a single function subjected to a linear equation on the two dimensional hyperbolic space. Furthermore, we consider the hyper-Kähler case for which the metric falls into the Gibbons-Hawking class. We find that the condition for the nonexistence of Dirac-Misner string enforces the solution with a nonvanishing acceleration parameter to the Eguchi-Hanson space.

Rational first integrals of geodesic equations and generalised hidden symmetries

We discuss novel generalisations of Killing tensors, which are introduced by considering rational first integrals of geodesic equations. We introduce the notion of inconstructible generalised Killing tensors, which cannot be constructed from ordinary Killing tensors. Moreover, we introduce inconstructible rational first integrals, which are constructed from inconstructible generalised Killing tensors, and provide a method for checking the inconstructibility of a rational first integral. Using the method, we show that the rational first integral of the Collinson-O'Donnell solution is not inconstructible. We also provide several examples of metrics admitting an inconstructible rational first integral in two and four dimensions, by using the Maciejewski-Przybylska system. Furthermore, we attempt to generalise other hidden symmetries such as Killing-Yano tensors.

Self-similar motion of a Nambu-Goto string

We study the self-similar motion of a string in a self-similar spacetime by introducing the concept of a self-similar string, which is defined as the world sheet to which a homothetic vector field is tangent. It is shown that in Nambu-Goto theory, the equations of motion for a self-similar string reduce to those for a particle. Moreover, under certain conditions such as the hypersurface orthogonality of the homothetic vector field, the equations of motion for a self-similar string simplify to the geodesic equations on a (pseudo) Riemannian space. As a concrete example, we investigate a self-similar Nambu-Goto string in a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker expanding universe with self-similarity and obtain solutions of open and closed strings, which have various nontrivial configurations depending on the rate of the cosmic expansion. For instance, we obtain a circular solution that evolves linearly in the cosmic time while keeping its configuration by the balance between the effects of the cosmic expansion and string tension. We also show the instability for linear radial perturbation of the circular solutions.

A simple test for spacetime symmetry

This paper presents a simple method for investigating spacetime symmetry for a given metric. The method makes use of the curvature conditions that are obtained from the Killing equations. We use the solutions of the curvature conditions to compute an upper bound on the number of Killing vector fields, as well as Killing-Yano tensors and closed conformal Killing-Yano tensors. We also use them in the integration of the Killing equations. By means of the method, we thoroughly investigate Killing-Yano symmetry of type D vacuum solutions such as the Kerr metric in four dimensions. The method is also applied to a large variety of physical metrics in four and five dimensions.

Antisymmetric tensor generalizations of affine vector fields

Tensor generalizations of affine vector fields called symmetric and antisymmetric affine tensor fields are discussed as symmetry of spacetimes. We review the properties of the symmetric ones, which have been studied in earlier works, and investigate the properties of the antisymmetric ones, which are the main theme in this paper. It is shown that antisymmetric affine tensor fields are closely related to one-lower-rank antisymmetric tensor fields which are parallelly transported along geodesics. It is also shown that the number of linear independent rank-$p$ antisymmetric affine tensor fields in $n$ dimensions is bounded by $(n+1)!/p!(n-p)!$. We also derive the integrability conditions for antisymmetric affine tensor fields. Using the integrability conditions, we discuss the existence of antisymmetric affine tensor fields on various spacetimes.

General Wahlquist Metrics in All Dimensions

It is shown that the Wahlquist metric, which is a stationary, axially symmetric perfect fluid solution with $ρ+3p=\text{const.}$, admits a rank-2 generalized closed conformal Killing-Yano tensor with a skew-symmetric torsion. Taking advantage of the presence of such a tensor, we obtain a higher-dimensional generalization of the Wahlquist metric in arbitrary dimensions, including a family of vacuum black hole solutions with spherical horizon topology such as Schwarzschild-Tangherlini, Myers-Perry and higher-dimensional Kerr-NUT-(A)dS metrics and a family of static, spherically symmetric perfect fluid solutions in higher dimensions.

A Deformation of Sasakian Structure in the Presence of Torsion and Supergravity Solutions

We discuss a deformation of Sasakian structure in the presence of totally skew-symmetric torsion by introducing odd dimensional manifolds whose metric cones are Kähler with torsion. It is shown that such a geometry inherits similar properties to those of Sasakian geometry. As an example of them, we present an explicit expression of local metrics and see how Sasakian structure is deformed by the presence of torsion. We also demonstrate that our example of the metrics admits the existence of hidden symmetries described by non-trivial odd-rank generalized closed conformal Killing-Yano tensors. Furthermore, using these metrics as an {\it ansatz}, we construct exact solutions in five dimensional minimal (un-)gauged supergravity and eleven dimensional supergravity. Finally, we discuss the global structures of the solutions and obtain regular metrics on compact manifolds in five dimensions, which give natural generalizations of Sasaki--Einstein manifolds $Y^{p,q}$ and $L^{a,b,c}$. We also discuss regular metrics on non-compact manifolds in eleven dimensions.

Local metrics admitting a principal Killing-Yano tensor with torsion

In this paper we initiate a classification of local metrics admitting the principal Killing--Yano tensor with a skew-symmetric torsion. It is demonstrated that in such spacetimes rank-2 Killing tensors occur naturally and mutually commute. We reduce the classification problem to that of solving a set of partial differential equations, and we present some solutions to these PDEs. In even dimensions, three types of local metrics are obtained: one of them naturally generalizes the torsionless case while the others occur only when the torsion is present. In odd dimensions, we obtain more varieties of local metrics. The explicit metrics constructed in this paper are not the most general possible admitting the required symmetry, nevertheless, it is demonstrated that they cover a wide variety of solutions of various supergravities, such as the Kerr-Sen black holes of (un-)gauged abelian heterotic supergravity, the Chong-Cvetic-Lü-Pope black hole solution of five-dimensional minimal supergravity, or the Kähler with torsion manifolds. The relation between generalized Killing--Yano tensors and various torsion Killing spinors is also discussed.

Hidden Symmetry and Exact Solutions in Einstein Gravity

Conformal Killing-Yano tensors are introduced as a generalization of Killing vectors. They describe symmetries of higher-dimensional rotating black holes. In particular, a rank-2 closed conformal Killing-Yano tensor generates the tower of both hidden symmetries and isometries. We review a classification of higher-dimensional spacetimes admitting such a tensor, and present exact solutions to the Einstein equations for these spacetimes.

Generalized hidden symmetries and the Kerr-Sen black hole

We elaborate on basic properties of generalized Killing-Yano tensors which naturally extend Killing-Yano symmetry in the presence of skew-symmetric torsion. In particular, we discuss their relationship to Killing tensors and the separability of various field equations. We further demonstrate that the Kerr-Sen black hole spacetime of heterotic string theory, as well as its generalization to all dimensions, possesses a generalized closed conformal Killing-Yano 2-form with respect to a torsion identified with the 3-form occuring naturally in the theory. Such a 2-form is responsible for complete integrability of geodesic motion as well as for separability of the scalar and Dirac equations in these spacetimes.

Symmetries of the Dirac operator with skew-symmetric torsion

In this paper, we consider the symmetries of the Dirac operator derived from a connection with skew-symmetric torsion. We find that the generalized conformal Killing-Yano tensors give rise to symmetry operators of the massless Dirac equation, provided an explicitly given anomaly vanishes. We show that this gives rise to symmetries of the Dirac operator in the case of strong Kahler with torsion (KT) and strong hyper-Kahler with torsion (HKT) manifolds.
