Accelerated Black Holes beyond Maxwell's Electrodynamics

Theories of non-linear electrodynamics naturally describe deviations from Maxwell's theory in the strong field regime. Among these, of special interest is the recently discovered ModMax electrodynamics, which is a unique 1-parametric generalization of Maxwell's theory that possesses the conformal invariance as well as the electromagnetic duality. In this paper we construct the asymptotically AdS accelerated black holes in this theory and study their thermodynamics - providing thus a first example of accelerated solutions coupled to non-linear electrodynamics. Our study opens a window towards studying radiative spacetimes in non-linear electromagnetic regime as well as raises new challenges for their corresponding holographic interpretation.

Generalized Lense--Thirring metrics: higher-curvature corrections and solutions with matter

The Lense--Thirring spacetime describes a 4-dimensional slowly rotating approximate solution of vacuum Einstein equations valid to a linear order in rotation parameter. It is fully characterized by a single metric function of the corresponding static (Schwarzschild) solution. In this paper, we introduce a generalization of the Lense--Thirring spacetimes to the higher-dimensional multiply-spinning case, with an ansatz that is not necessarily fully characterized by a single (static) metric function. This generalization lets us study slowly rotating spacetimes in various higher curvature gravities as well as in the presence of non-trivial matter. Moreover, the ansatz can be recast in Painlev{é}--Gullstrand form (and thence is manifestly regular on the horizon) and admits a tower of exact rank-2 and higher rank Killing tensors that rapidly grows with the number of dimensions. In particular, we construct slowly multiply-spinning solutions in Lovelock gravity and notably show that in four dimensions Einstein gravity is the only non-trivial theory amongst all up to quartic curvature gravities that admits a Lense--Thirring solution characterized by a single metric function.

Holographic CFT Phase Transitions and Criticality for Charged AdS Black Holes

We study the hololgraphic dual of the extended thermodynamics of spherically symmetric, charged AdS black holes in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The gravitational thermodynamics of AdS black holes can be extended by allowing for variations of the cosmological constant and Newton's constant. In the dual CFT this corresponds to including the central charge $C$ and its chemical potential $μ$ as a new pair of conjugate thermodynamic variables, in addition to the standard pairs: temperature vs. entropy $(T,S)$, electric potential vs. charge $(\tilde Φ, \tilde Q)$ and field theory pressure vs. volume $(p,{\cal V})$. For the (grand) canonical ensembles at fixed $(\tilde Q, {\cal V}, C), (\tilde Φ, {\cal V},C)$ and $(\tilde Q, {\cal V}, μ)$ we show the CFT description of charged AdS black holes contains either critical phenomena or interesting phase behaviour. In the fixed $(\tilde Q, \mathcal V, μ)$ we find a new zeroth-order phase transition between a high- and low-entropy phase at some $μ$-dependent temperature. Finally, we point out there is no critical behaviour in the fixed $p$ ensembles, i.e. there is no $p - \cal V$ criticality, and hence the CFT state dual to a classical charged black hole cannot be a Van der Waals fluid.

Slowly rotating black holes in nonlinear electrodynamics

We show how (at least in principle) one can construct electrically and magnetically charged slowly rotating black hole solutions coupled to non-linear electrodynamics (NLE). Our generalized Lense-Thirring ansatz is, apart from the static metric function $f$ and the electrostatic potential $ϕ$ inherited from the corresponding spherical solution, characterized by two new functions $h$ (in the metric) and $ω$ (in the vector potential) encoding the effect of rotation. In the linear Maxwell case, the rotating solutions are completely characterized by static solution, featuring $h=(f-1)/r^2$ and $ω=1$. We show that when the first is imposed, the ansatz is inconsistent with any restricted (see below) NLE but the Maxwell electrodynamics. In particular, this implies that the (standard) Newman-Janis algorithm cannot be used to generate rotating solutions for any restricted non-trivial NLE. We present a few explicit examples of slowly rotating solutions in particular models of NLE, as well as briefly discuss the NLE charged Taub-NUT spacetimes.

Slowly rotating black holes with exact Killing tensor symmetries

We present a novel family of slowly rotating black hole solutions in four, and higher dimensions, that extend the well known Lense-Thirring spacetime and solve the field equations to linear order in rotation parameter. As "exact metrics" in their own right, the new (non-vacuum) spacetimes feature the following two remarkable properties: i) near the black hole horizon they can be cast in the, manifestly regular, Painlevé-Gullstrand form and ii) they admit exact Killing tensor symmetries. We show these symmetries are inherited from the principal Killing-Yano tensor of the exact rotating black hole geometry in the slow rotation limit. This provides a missing link as to how the exact hidden symmetries emerge as rotation is switched on. Remarkably, in higher dimensions the novel generalized Lense-Thirring spacetimes feature a rapidly growing number of exact irreducible rank-2, as well as higher-rank, Killing tensors -- giving a first example of a physical spacetime with more hidden than explicit symmetries.

Quantum Detection of Inertial Frame Dragging

A relativistic theory of gravity like general relativity produces phenomena differing fundamentally from Newton's theory. An example, analogous to electromagnetic induction, is gravitomagnetism, or the dragging of inertial frames by mass-energy currents. These effects have recently been confirmed by classical observations. Here we show, for the first time, that they can be observed by a quantum detector. We study the response function of Unruh De-Witt detectors placed in a slowly rotating shell. We show that the response function picks up the presence of rotation even though the spacetime inside the shell is flat and the detector is locally inertial. The detector can distinguish between the static situation when the shell is non-rotating and the stationary case when the shell rotates and the dragging of inertial frames, i.e. gravitomagnetic effects, arise. Moreover, it can do so when the detector is switched on for a finite time interval within which a light signal cannot travel to the shell and back to convey the presence of rotation.

Are Superentropic black holes superentropic?

We study a critical limit in which asymptotically-AdS black holes develop maximal conical deficits and their horizons become non-compact. When applied to stationary rotating black holes this limit coincides with the "ultraspinning limit" and yields the Superentropic black holes whose entropy was derived recently and found to exceed the maximal possible bound imposed by the Reverse Isoperimetric Inequality. To gain more insight into this peculiar result, we study this limit in the context of accelerated AdS black holes that have unequal deficits along the polar axes, hence the maximal deficit need not appear on both poles simultaneously. Surprisingly, we find that in the presence of acceleration, the critical limit becomes smooth, and is obtained simply by taking various upper bounds in the parameter space that we elucidate. The Critical black holes thus obtained have many common features with Superentropic black holes, but are manifestly not superentropic. This raises a concern as to whether Superentropic black holes actually are superentropic. We argue that this may not be so and that the original conclusion is likely attributed to the degeneracy of the resulting first law.

Conformally Coupled Scalar in Rotating Black Hole Spacetimes

We demonstrate separability of conformally coupled scalar field equation in general (off-shell) Kerr-NUT-AdS spacetimes in all dimensions. The separability is intrinsically characterized by the existence of a complete set of mutually commuting conformal wave operators that can be constructed from a hidden symmetry of the principal Killing-Yano tensor. By token of conformal symmetry, the separability also works for any Weyl rescaled (off-shell) metrics. This is especially interesting in four dimensions where it guarantees separability of a conformally coupled scalar field in the general Plebanski-Demianski spacetime.

Lower-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet Gravity and BTZ Black Holes

We consider the $D\to 3$ limit of Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We find two distinct but similar versions of the theory and obtain black hole solutions for each. For one theory the solution is an interesting generalization of the BTZ black hole that does not have constant curvature but whose thermodynamics is identical. The other theory admits a solution that is asymptotically AdS but does not approach the BTZ black hole in the limit of small Gauss-Bonnet coupling. We also discuss the distinction between our solutions and those obtained by taking a $D\to 3$ limit of solutions to $D$-dimensional Einstein Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We find that these latter metrics are not solutions of the theories we consider except for particular constraints on the parameters.

On Taking the $D\to 4$ limit of Gauss-Bonnet Gravity: Theory and Solutions

We comment on the recently introduced Gauss-Bonnet gravity in four dimensions. We argue that it does not make sense to consider this theory to be defined by a set of $D\to 4$ solutions of the higher-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We show that a well-defined $D\to 4$ limit of Gauss-Bonnet Gravity is obtained generalizing a method employed by Mann and Ross to obtain a limit of the Einstein gravity in $D=2$ dimensions. This is a scalar-tensor theory of the Horndeski type obtained by a dimensional reduction methods. By considering simple spacetimes beyond spherical symmetry (Taub-NUT spaces) we show that the naive limit of the higher-dimensional theory to four dimensions is not well defined and contrast the resultant metrics with the actual solutions of the new theory.

Quantum Distinction of Inertial Frames: Local vs. Global

We study the response function of Unruh-deWitt detectors placed in a flat spacetime inside a thin matter shell. We show that the response function distinguishes between the local and global (Minkowski) inertial frames and picks up the presence of the shell even when the detector is switched on for a finite time interval within which a light signal cannot travel to the shell and back as required by a classical measurement. We also analyze how the response of the detector depends on its location within the shell.

Rotating Gauss-Bonnet BTZ Black Holes

We obtain rotating black hole solutions to the novel 3D Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity recently proposed. These solutions generalize the BTZ metric and are not of constant curvature. They possess an ergoregion and outer horizon, but do not have an inner horizon. We present their basic properties and show that they break the universality of thermodynamics present for their static charged counterparts, whose properties we also discuss. Extending our considerations to higher dimensions, we also obtain novel 4D Gauss-Bonnet rotating black strings.

Thermodynamics of Rotating NUTty Dyons

We extend the work on thermodynamics of Lorentzian NUTty solutions, by including simultaneously the effect of rotation and electromagnetic charges. Due to the fact that Misner strings carry electric charge, and similar to the non-rotating case, we observe an interesting interplay between the horizon and asymptotic charges. Namely, upon employing the Euclidean action calculation we derive two alternative full cohomogeneity first laws, one that includes the variations of the horizon electric charge and the asymptotic magnetic charge and another that involves the horizon magnetic charge and the asymptotic electric charge. When one of the horizon charges vanishes, we obtain the corresponding "electric" and "magnetic" first laws that are connected by the electromagnetic duality. We also briefly study the free energy of the corresponding system.

Massive vector fields in Kerr--Newman and Kerr--Sen black hole spacetimes

The superradiant instability modes of ultralight massive vector bosons are studied for weakly charged rotating black holes in Einstein--Maxwell gravity (the Kerr--Newman solution) and low-energy heterotic string theory (the Kerr--Sen black hole). We show that in both these cases, the corresponding massive vector (Proca) equations can be fully separated, exploiting the hidden symmetry present in these spacetimes. The resultant ordinary differential equations are solved numerically to find the most unstable modes of the Proca field in the two backgrounds and compared to the vacuum (Kerr black hole) case.

Misner Gravitational Charges and Variable String Strengths

As shown recently (arXiv:1903.08668), consistent thermodynamics of the Lorentzian Taub-NUT solutions with Misner strings present can be formulated provided a new pair of conjugate quantities (related to the NUT parameter) $ψ-N$ is introduced. In (arXiv:1903.08668) this pair was calculated from the Euclidean action but no geometrical interpretation for the new quantities was provided. In this paper we propose that the potential $ψ$ should be identified with the surface gravity of the Misner string and the conjugate Misner charge $N$ can be obtained by a Komar-type integration over the tubes surrounding the string singularities. We show that similar tube contributions also modify the Komar formula for the thermodynamic volume. To render the integrals finite we employ the method of Killing co-potentials. By construction the new charges then satisfy the Smarr relation. Equipped with these geometrical notions, we generalize the first law for the (possibly charged) Taub-NUT spacetimes to account for asymmetric distributions of Misner strings and their potential variable strengths.

Criticality and Surface Tension in Rotating Horizon Thermodynamics

We study a modified horizon thermodynamics and the associated criticality for rotating black hole spacetimes. Namely, we show that under a virtual displacement of the black hole horizon accompanied by an independent variation of the rotation parameter, the radial Einstein equation takes a form of a "cohomogeneity two" horizon first law, $dE=TdS+ΩdJ-σdA$, where $E$ and $J$ are the horizon energy (an analogue of the Misner-Sharp mass) and the horizon angular momentum, $Ω$ is the horizon angular velocity, $A$ is the horizon area, and $σ$ is the surface tension induced by the matter fields. For fixed angular momentum, the above equation simplifies and the more familiar (cohomogeneity one) horizon first law $dE=TdS-PdV$ is obtained, where $P$ is the pressure of matter fields and $V$ is the horizon volume. A universal equation of state is obtained in each case and the corresponding critical behavior is studied.

Rotating black holes pierced by a cosmic string

A rotating black hole threaded by an infinitely long cosmic string is studied in the framework of the Abelian Higgs model. We show that contrary to a common belief, in the presence of rotation the backreaction of the string does not induce a simple conical deficit. This leads to new distinct features of the Kerr--string system such as modified ISCO or shifted ergosphere, though these effects are likely outside the range of observational precision. For an extremal rotating black hole, the system exhibits a first-order phase transition for the gravitational Meissner effect: whereas the horizon of large black holes is pierced by the vortex, small black holes exhibit a flux-expelled solution, with the gauge and scalar field remaining identically in their false vacuum state on the event horizon. A brief review prepared for the MG14 Proceedings.

Thermodynamics of horizons: de Sitter black holes and reentrant phase transitions

In this paper we propose a straightforward method for understanding the thermodynamics of black holes in de Sitter space, one that will allow us to study these black holes in a way that is analogous to the anti-de Sitter case. As per usual, we formulate separate thermodynamic first laws for each horizon present in the spacetime, and study their thermodynamics as if they were independent systems characterized by their own temperature. That these systems are not entirely independent and various thermodynamic quantities in them are in fact "correlated" is reflected by the fact that their thermodynamics can be captured by a single Gibbs free energy-like thermodynamic potential. This quantity contains information about possible phase transitions in the system and allows us to uncover a rich phase structure for de Sitter black holes. In particular, we discover reentrant phase transitions for Kerr-dS black holes in six dimensions, a phenomenon recently observed for their six dimensional AdS cousins.

Killing-Yano forms and Killing tensors on a warped space

We formulate several criteria under which the symmetries associated with the Killing and Killing-Yano tensors on the base space can be lifted to the symmetries of the full warped geometry. The procedure is explicitly illustrated on several examples, providing new prototypes of spacetimes admitting such tensors. In particular, we study a warped product of two Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetimes and show that it gives rise to a new class of highly symmetric vacuum (with cosmological constant) black hole solutions that inherit many of the properties of the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS geometry.

Ultraspinning limits and rotating hyperboloid membranes

We apply the hyperboloid membrane limit to the general Kerr-AdS metrics and their recently studied super-entropic cousins and obtain a new class of rotating black holes, for which the rotational parameters in multiple directions attain their maximal value---equal to the AdS radius. These new solutions have a potential application in the description of holographic fluids with vorticity. They also possess interesting thermodynamic properties: we show that---despite the absence of Misner strings---the Bekenstein--Hawking entropy/area law is still violated, raising a question about the origin of this violation.

Ultraspinning limits and super-entropic black holes

By employing the new ultraspinning limit we construct novel classes of black holes with non-compact event horizons and finite horizon area and study their thermodynamics. Our ultraspinning limit can be understood as a simple generating technique that consists of three steps: i) transforming the known rotating AdS black hole solution to a special coordinate system that rotates (in a given 2-plane) at infinity ii) boosting this rotation to the speed of light iii) compactifying the corresponding azimuthal direction. In so doing we qualitatively change the structure of the spacetime since it is no longer possible to return to a frame that does not rotate at infinity. The obtained black holes have non-compact horizons with topology of a sphere with two punctures. The entropy of some of these exceeds the maximal bound implied by the reverse isoperimetric inequality, such black holes are super-entropic.

Isolated critical point from Lovelock gravity

For any K(=2k+1)th-order Lovelock gravity with fine-tuned Lovelock couplings, we demonstrate the existence of a special isolated critical point characterized by non-standard critical exponents in the phase diagram of hyperbolic vacuum black holes. In the Gibbs free energy this corresponds to a place wherefrom two swallowtails emerge, giving rise to two first-order phase transitions between small and large black holes. We believe that this is a first example of a critical point with non-standard critical exponents obtained in a geometric theory of gravity.

Kerr-AdS analogue of triple point and solid/liquid/gas phase transition

We study the thermodynamic behavior of multi-spinning d=6 Kerr-anti de Sitter black holes in the canonical ensemble of fixed angular momenta J1 and J2. We find, dependent on the ratio q=J2/J1, qualitatively different interesting phenomena known from the `every day thermodynamics' of simple substances. For q=0 the system exhibits recently observed reentrant large/small/large black hole phase transitions, but for 0<q<<1 we find an analogue of a `solid/liquid' phase transition. Furthermore, for 0.00905<q<0.0985 the system displays the presence of a large/intermediate/small black hole phase transition with one tricritical and two critical points. This behavior is reminiscent of the solid/liquid/gas phase transition except that the coexistence line of small and intermediate black holes does not continue for an arbitrary value of pressure (similar to the solid/liquid coexistence line) but rather terminates at one of the critical points. Finally, for q>0.0985 we observe the `standard liquid/gas behavior' of the Van der Waals fluid.

Multiple Reentrant Phase Transitions and Triple Points in Lovelock Thermodynamics

We investigate the effects of higher curvature corrections from Lovelock gravity on the phase structure of asymptotically AdS black holes, treating the cosmological constant as a thermodynamic pressure. We examine how various thermodynamic phenomena, such as Van der Waals behaviour, reentrant phase transitions (RPT), and tricritical points are manifest for U(1) charged black holes in Gauss-Bonnet and 3rd-order Lovelock gravities. We furthermore observe a new phenomenon of "multiple RPT" behaviour, in which for fixed pressure the small/large/small/large black hole phase transition occurs as the temperature of the system increases. We also find that when the higher-order Lovelock couplings are related in a particular way, a peculiar isolated critical point emerges for hyperbolic black holes and is characterized by non-standard critical exponents.

Super-Entropic Black Holes

We construct a new class of rotating AdS black hole solutions with non-compact event horizons of finite area in any dimension and study their thermodynamics. In four dimensions these black holes are solutions to gauged supergravity. We find that their entropy exceeds the maximum implied from the conjectured Reverse Isoperimetric Inequality, which states that for a given thermodynamic volume, the black hole entropy is maximized for Schwarzschild-AdS. We use this result to suggest more stringent conditions under which this conjecture may hold.

Thermodynamics of rotating black holes and black rings: phase transitions and thermodynamic volume

In this review we summarize, expand, and set in context recent developments on the thermodynamics of black holes in extended phase space, where the cosmological constant is interpreted as thermodynamic pressure and treated as a thermodynamic variable in its own right. We specifically consider the thermodynamics of higher-dimensional rotating asymptotically flat and AdS black holes and black rings in a canonical (fixed angular momentum) ensemble. We plot the associated thermodynamic potential-the Gibbs free energy-and study its behaviour to uncover possible thermodynamic phase transitions in these black hole spacetimes. We show that the multiply-rotating Kerr-AdS black holes exhibit a rich set of interesting thermodynamic phenomena analogous to the "every day thermodynamics" of simple substances, such as reentrant phase transitions of multicomponent liquids, multiple first-order solid/liquid/gas phase transitions, and liquid/gas phase transitions of the Van der Waals type. Furthermore, the reentrant phase transitions also occur for multiply-spinning asymptotically flat Myers-Perry black holes. The thermodynamic volume, a quantity conjugate to the thermodynamic pressure, is studied for AdS black rings and demonstrated to satisfy the reverse isoperimetric inequality; this provides a first example of calculation confirming the validity of isoperimetric inequality conjecture for a black hole with non-spherical horizon topology. The equation of state P=P(V,T) is studied for various black holes both numerically and analytically-in the ultraspinning and slow rotation regimes.

Van der Waals black hole

In the context of extended phase space, where the negative cosmological constant is treated as a thermodynamic pressure in the first law of black hole thermodynamics, we find an asymptotically AdS metric whose thermodynamics matches exactly that of the Van der Waals fluid. However, we show that as a solution of Einstein's equations, the corresponding stress energy tensor does not obey any of the energy conditions everywhere outside of the horizon.

Vortex hair on AdS black holes

We analyse vortex hair for charged rotating asymptotically AdS black holes in the abelian Higgs model. We give analytical and numerical arguments to show how the vortex interacts with the horizon of the black hole, and how the solution extends to the boundary. The solution is very close to the corresponding asymptotically flat vortex, once one transforms to a frame that is non-rotating at the boundary. We show that there is a Meissner effect for extremal black holes, with the vortex flux being expelled from sufficiently small black holes. The phase transition is shown to be first order in the presence of rotation, but second order without rotation. We comment on applications to holography.

Reentrant Phase Transitions in Rotating AdS Black Holes

We study the thermodynamics of higher-dimensional singly spinning asymptotically AdS black holes in the canonical (fixed J) ensemble of extended phase space, where the cosmological constant is treated as pressure and the corresponding conjugate quantity is interpreted as thermodynamic volume. Along with the usual small/large black hole phase transition, we find a new phenomenon of reentrant phase transitions for all d>5 dimensions, in which a monotonic variation of the temperature yields two phase transitions from large to small and back to large black holes. This situation is similar to that seen in multicomponent liquids.

Rotating black hole hair

A Kerr black hole sporting cosmic string hair is studied in the context of the abelian Higgs model vortex. It is shown that a such a system displays much richer phenomenology than its static Schwarzschild or Reissner--Nordstrom cousins, for example, the rotation generates a near horizon electric field. In the case of an extremal rotating black hole, two phases of the Higgs hair are possible: Large black holes exhibit standard hair, with the vortex piercing the event horizon. Small black holes on the other hand, exhibit a flux-expelled solution, with the gauge and scalar field remaining identically in their false vacuum state on the event horizon. This solution however is extremely sensitive to confirm numerically, and we conjecture that it is unstable due to a supperradiant mechanism similar to the Kerr-adS instability. Finally, we compute the gravitational back reaction of the vortex, which turns out to be far more nuanced than a simple conical deficit. While the string produces a conical effect, it is conical with respect to a local co-rotating frame, not with respect to the static frame at infinity. As a consequence, we find that the ergosphere is shifted, and geodesics around the black hole are perturbed.

Thermodynamic Volumes and Isoperimetric Inequalities for de Sitter Black Holes

We consider the thermodynamics of rotating and charged asymptotically de Sitter black holes. Using Hamiltonian perturbation theory techniques, we derive three different first law relations including variations in the cosmological constant, and associated Smarr formulas that are satisfied by such spacetimes. Each first law introduces a different thermodynamic volume conjugate to the cosmological constant. We examine the relation between these thermodynamic volumes and associated geometric volumes in a number of examples, including Kerr-dS black holes in all dimensions and Kerr-Newman-dS black holes in D=4. We also show that the Chong-Cvetic-Lu-Pope solution of D=5 minimal supergravity, analytically continued to positive cosmological constant, describes black hole solutions of the Einstein-Chern-Simons theory and include such charged asymptotically de Sitter black holes in our analysis. In all these examples we find that the particular thermodynamic volume associated with the region between the black hole and cosmological horizons is equal to the naive geometric volume. Isoperimetric inequalities, which hold in the examples considered, are formulated for the different thermodynamic volumes and conjectured to remain valid for all asymptotically de Sitter black holes. In particular, in all examples considered, we find that for fixed volume of the observable universe, the entropy is increased by adding black holes. We conjecture that this is true in general.

Electron in higher-dimensional weakly charged rotating black hole spacetimes

We demonstrate separability of the Dirac equation in weakly charged rotating black hole spacetimes in all dimensions. The electromagnetic field of the black hole is described by a test field approximation, with vector potential proportional to the primary Killing vector field. It is shown that the demonstrated separability can be intrinsically characterized by the existence of a complete set of mutually commuting first order symmetry operators generated from the principal Killing-Yano tensor. The presented results generalize the results on integrability of charged particle motion and separability of charged scalar field studied in [1].

Extended phase space thermodynamics for charged and rotating black holes and Born-Infeld vacuum polarization

We investigate the critical behaviour of charged and rotating AdS black holes in d spacetime dimensions, including effects from non-linear electrodynamics via the Born-Infeld action, in an extended phase space in which the cosmological constant is interpreted as thermodynamic pressure. For Reissner-Nordstrom black holes we find that the analogy with the Van der Walls liquid-gas system holds in any dimension greater than three, and that the critical exponents coincide with those of the Van der Waals system. We find that neutral slowly rotating black holes in four space-time dimensions also have the same qualitative behaviour. However charged and rotating black holes in three spacetime dimensions do not exhibit critical phenomena. For Born-Infeld black holes we define a new thermodynamic quantity B conjugate to the Born-Infeld parameter b that we call Born-Infeld vacuum polarization. We demonstrate that this quantity is required for consistency of both the first law of thermodynamics and the corresponding Smarr relation.

Geometry of Lax pairs: particle motion and Killing-Yano tensors

A geometric formulation of the Lax pair equation on a curved manifold is studied using phase space formalism. The corresponding (covariantly conserved) Lax tensor is defined and the method of generation of constants of motion from it is discussed. It is shown that when the Hamilton equations of motion are used, the conservation of the Lax tensor translates directly to the well known Lax pair equation, with one matrix identified with components of the Lax tensor and the other matrix constructed from the (metric) connection. A generalization to Clifford objects is also discussed. Nontrivial examples of Lax tensors for geodesic and charged particle motion are found in spacetimes admitting hidden symmetry of Killing--Yano tensors.

Local metrics admitting a principal Killing-Yano tensor with torsion

In this paper we initiate a classification of local metrics admitting the principal Killing--Yano tensor with a skew-symmetric torsion. It is demonstrated that in such spacetimes rank-2 Killing tensors occur naturally and mutually commute. We reduce the classification problem to that of solving a set of partial differential equations, and we present some solutions to these PDEs. In even dimensions, three types of local metrics are obtained: one of them naturally generalizes the torsionless case while the others occur only when the torsion is present. In odd dimensions, we obtain more varieties of local metrics. The explicit metrics constructed in this paper are not the most general possible admitting the required symmetry, nevertheless, it is demonstrated that they cover a wide variety of solutions of various supergravities, such as the Kerr-Sen black holes of (un-)gauged abelian heterotic supergravity, the Chong-Cvetic-Lü-Pope black hole solution of five-dimensional minimal supergravity, or the Kähler with torsion manifolds. The relation between generalized Killing--Yano tensors and various torsion Killing spinors is also discussed.

P-V criticality of charged AdS black holes

Treating the cosmological constant as a thermodynamic pressure and its conjugate quantity as a thermodynamic volume, we reconsider the critical behaviour of charged AdS black holes. We complete the analogy of this system with the liquid-gas system and study its critical point, which occurs at the point of divergence of specific heat at constant pressure. We calculate the critical exponents and show that they coincide with those of the Van der Waals system.

Commuting symmetry operators of the Dirac equation, Killing-Yano and Schouten-Nijenhuis brackets

In this paper we derive the most general first-order symmetry operator commuting with the Dirac operator in all dimensions and signatures. Such an operator splits into Clifford even and Clifford odd parts which are given in terms of odd Killing-Yano and even closed conformal Killing-Yano inhomogeneous forms respectively. We study commutators of these symmetry operators and give necessary and sufficient conditions under which they remain of the first-order. In this specific setting we can introduce a Killing-Yano bracket, a bilinear operation acting on odd Killing-Yano and even closed conformal Killing-Yano forms, and demonstrate that it is closely related to the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket. An important non-trivial example of vanishing Killing-Yano brackets is given by Dirac symmetry operators generated from the principal conformal Killing-Yano tensor [hep-th/0612029]. We show that among these operators one can find a complete subset of mutually commuting operators. These operators underlie separability of the Dirac equation in Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetimes in all dimensions [arXiv:0711.0078].

Dirac Equation in Kerr-NUT-(A)dS Spacetimes: Intrinsic Characterization of Separability in All Dimensions

We intrinsically characterize separability of the Dirac equation in Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetimes in all dimensions. Namely, we explicitly demonstrate that in such spacetimes there exists a complete set of first-order mutually commuting operators, one of which is the Dirac operator, that allows for common eigenfunctions which can be found in a separated form and correspond precisely to the general solution of the Dirac equation found by Oota and Yasui [arXiv:0711.0078]. Since all the operators in the set can be generated from the principal conformal Killing-Yano tensor, this establishes the (up to now) missing link among the existence of hidden symmetry, presence of a complete set of commuting operators, and separability of the Dirac equation in these spacetimes.

On Integrability of spinning particle motion in higher-dimensional black hole spacetimes

We study the motion of a classical spinning particle (with spin degrees of freedom described by a vector of Grassmann variables) in higher-dimensional general rotating black hole spacetimes with a cosmological constant. In all dimensions n we exhibit n bosonic functionally independent integrals of spinning particle motion, corresponding to explicit and hidden symmetries generated from the principal conformal Killing--Yano tensor. Moreover, we demonstrate that in 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-dimensional black hole spacetimes such integrals are in involution, proving the bosonic part of the motion integrable. We conjecture that the same conclusion remains valid in all higher dimensions. Our result generalizes the result of Page et. al. [hep-th/0611083] on complete integrability of geodesic motion in these spacetimes.

Generalized hidden symmetries and the Kerr-Sen black hole

We elaborate on basic properties of generalized Killing-Yano tensors which naturally extend Killing-Yano symmetry in the presence of skew-symmetric torsion. In particular, we discuss their relationship to Killing tensors and the separability of various field equations. We further demonstrate that the Kerr-Sen black hole spacetime of heterotic string theory, as well as its generalization to all dimensions, possesses a generalized closed conformal Killing-Yano 2-form with respect to a torsion identified with the 3-form occuring naturally in the theory. Such a 2-form is responsible for complete integrability of geodesic motion as well as for separability of the scalar and Dirac equations in these spacetimes.

Generalized Killing-Yano equations in D=5 gauged supergravity

We propose a generalization of the (conformal) Killing-Yano equations relevant to D=5 minimal gauged supergravity. The generalization stems from the fact that the dual of the Maxwell flux, the 3-form *F, couples naturally to particles in the background as a `torsion'. Killing-Yano tensors in the presence of torsion preserve most of the properties of the standard Killing-Yano tensors, exploited recently for the higher-dimensional rotating black holes of vacuum gravity with cosmological constant. In particular, the generalized closed conformal Killing-Yano 2-form gives rise to the tower of generalized closed conformal Killing-Yano tensors of increasing rank which in turn generate the tower of Killing tensors. An example of a generalized Killing-Yano tensor is found for the Chong-Cvetic-Lu-Pope black hole spacetime [hepth/0506029]. Such a tensor stands behind the separability of the Hamilton-Jacobi, Klein-Gordon, and Dirac equations in this background.

Hidden symmetry in the presence of fluxes

We derive the most general first order symmetry operator for the Dirac equation coupled to arbitrary fluxes. Such an operator is given in terms of an inhomogenous form omega which is a solution to a coupled system of first order partial differential equations which we call the generalized conformal Killing-Yano system. Except trivial fluxes, solutions of this system are subject to additional constraints. We discuss various special cases of physical interest. In particular, we demonstrate that in the case of a Dirac operator coupled to the skew symmetric torsion and U(1) field, the system of generalized conformal Killing-Yano equations decouples into the homogenous conformal Killing-Yano equations with torsion introduced in [arXiv:0905.0722] and the symmetry operator is essentially the one derived in [arXiv:1002.3616]. We also discuss the Dirac field coupled to a scalar potential and in the presence of 5-form and 7-form fluxes.

Symmetries of the Dirac operator with skew-symmetric torsion

In this paper, we consider the symmetries of the Dirac operator derived from a connection with skew-symmetric torsion. We find that the generalized conformal Killing-Yano tensors give rise to symmetry operators of the massless Dirac equation, provided an explicitly given anomaly vanishes. We show that this gives rise to symmetries of the Dirac operator in the case of strong Kahler with torsion (KT) and strong hyper-Kahler with torsion (HKT) manifolds.

On the supersymmetric limit of Kerr-NUT-AdS metrics

Generalizing the scaling limit of Martelli and Sparks [hep-th/0505027] into an arbitrary number of spacetime dimensions we re-obtain the (most general explicitly known) Einstein-Sasaki spaces constructed by Chen, Lu, and Pope [hep-th/0604125]. We demonstrate that this limit has a well-defined geometrical meaning which links together the principal conformal Killing-Yano tensor of the original Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetime, the Kahler 2-form of the resulting Einstein-Kahler base, and the Sasakian 1-form of the final Einstein-Sasaki space. The obtained Einstein-Sasaki space possesses the tower of Killing-Yano tensors of increasing rank, underlined by the existence of Killing spinors. A similar tower of hidden symmetries is observed in the original (odd-dimensional) Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetime. This rises an interesting question whether also these symmetries can be related to the existence of some "generalized" Killing spinor.

Hidden Symmetries of Higher Dimensional Black Holes and Uniqueness of the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetime

We prove that the most general solution of the Einstein equations with the cosmological constant which admits a principal conformal Killing-Yano tensor is the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS metric. Even when the Einstein equations are not imposed, any spacetime admitting such hidden symmetry can be written in a canonical form which guarantees the following properties: it is of the Petrov type D, it allows the separation of variables for the Hamilton-Jacobi, Klein-Gordon, and Dirac equations, the geodesic motion in such a spacetime is completely integrable. These results naturally generalize the results obtained earlier in four dimensions.

Killing-Yano Tensors, Rank-2 Killing Tensors, and Conserved Quantities in Higher Dimensions

From the metric and one Killing-Yano tensor of rank D-2 in any D-dimensional spacetime with such a principal Killing-Yano tensor, we show how to generate k=[(D+1)/2] Killing-Yano tensors, of rank D-2j for all j=0,...,k-1, and k rank-2 Killing tensors, giving k constants of geodesic motion that are in involution. For the example of the Kerr-NUT-AdS spacetime (hep-th/0604125) with its principal Killing-Yano tensor (gr-qc/0610144), these constants and the constants from the k Killing vectors give D independent constants in involution, making the geodesic motion completely integrable (hep-th/0611083). The constants of motion are also related to the constants recently obtained in the separation of the Hamilton-Jacobi and Klein-Gordon equations (hep-th/0611245).

Ultrarelativistic sources in nonlinear electrodynamics

The fields of rapidly moving sources are studied within nonlinear electrodynamics by boosting the fields of sources at rest. As a consequence of the ultrarelativistic limit the delta-like electromagnetic shock waves are found. The character of the field within the shock depends on the theory of nonlinear electrodynamics considered. In particular, we obtain the field of an ultrarelativistic charge in the Born-Infeld theory.
