Curve counting via stable objects in derived categories of Calabi-Yau 4-folds

In our previous paper with Maulik, we proposed a conjectural Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) type formula for the generating series of stable pair invariants on Calabi-Yau (CY) 4-folds. The purpose of this paper is to give an interpretation of the above GV type formula in terms of wall-crossing phenomena in the derived category. We introduce invariants counting LePotier's stable pairs on CY 4-folds, and show that they count certain stable objects in D0-D2-D8 bound states in the derived category. We propose a conjectural wall-crossing formula for the generating series of our invariants, which recovers the conjectural GV type formula. Examples are computed for both compact and toric cases to support our conjecture.

Derived categories of Quot schemes of zero-dimensional quotients on curves

We prove the existence of semiorthogonal decompositions of derived categories of Quot schemes of zero-dimensional quotients on curves in terms of derived categories of symmetric products of curves. The above result is a categorical analogue of a similar formula for the class of Quot schemes in the Grothendieck ring of varieties by Bagnarol-Fantechi-Perroni. It is a special case of a more general Quot formula of relative dimension one, which is regarded as a Bosonic counterpart of the Quot formula conjectured by Jiang and proved by the author. The proof involves categorical wall-crossing formula for framed one loop quiver, which itself is motivated and has applications to categorical wall-crossing formula of Donaldson-Thomas invariants.

Gopakumar-Vafa invariants and wall-crossing

In this paper, we generalize a mathematical definition of Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) invariants on Calabi-Yau 3-folds introduced by Maulik and the author, using an analogue of BPS sheaves introduced by Davison-Meinhardt on the coarse moduli spaces of one dimensional twisted semistable sheaves with arbitrary holomorphic Euler characteristics. We show that our generalized GV invariants are independent of twisted stability conditions, and conjecture that they are also independent of holomorphic Euler characteristics, so that they define the same GV invariants. As an application, we will show the flop transformation formula of GV invariants.

Stable pairs and Gopakumar-Vafa type invariants on holomorphic symplectic 4-folds

As an analogy to Gopakumar-Vafa conjecture on Calabi-Yau 3-folds, Klemm-Pandharipande defined Gopakumar-Vafa type invariants of a Calabi-Yau 4-fold $X$ using Gromov-Witten theory. When $X$ is holomorphic symplectic, Gromov-Witten invariants vanish and one can consider the corresponding reduced theory. In a companion work, we propose a definition of Gopakumar-Vafa type invariants for such a reduced theory. In this paper, we give them a sheaf theoretic interpretation via moduli spaces of stable pairs.

The categorical DT/PT correspondence and quasi-BPS categories for local surfaces

We construct semiorthogonal decompositions of Donaldson-Thomas (DT) categories for reduced curve classes on local surfaces into products of quasi-BPS categories and Pandharipande-Thomas (PT) categories, giving a categorical analogue of the numerical DT/PT correspondence for Calabi-Yau 3-folds. The main ingredient is a categorical wall-crossing formula for DT/PT quivers (which appear as Ext-quivers in the DT/PT wall-crossing) proved in our previous paper. We also study quasi-BPS categories of points on local surfaces and propose conjectural computations of their K-theory analogous to formulas already known for the three dimensional affine space.

On window theorem for categorical Donaldson-Thomas theories on local surfaces and its applications

In this paper, we prove a window theorem for categorical Donaldson-Thomas theories on local surfaces as an analogue of window theorem for GIT quotient stacks. We give two applications of our main result. The first one is a proof of wall-crossing equivalences of DT categories for one dimensional stable sheave on local surfaces, under some technical condition on strictly semistable sheaves. The second one is to show the existence of fully-faithful functors from categorical PT theories to categorical MNOP theories, when the curve class is reduced. These results indicate categorifications of wall-crossing formulas of numerical DT invariants, and also regarded as d-critical analogue of D/K conjecture in birational geometry.

Tautological stable pair invariants of Calabi-Yau 4-folds

Let $X$ be a Calabi-Yau 4-fold and $D$ a smooth divisor on it. We consider tautological complex associated with $L=\mathcal{O}_X(D)$ on the moduli space of Le Potier stable pairs and define its counting invariant by integrating the Euler class against the virtual class. We conjecture a formula for their generating series expressed using genus zero Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of $D$ and genus one Gopakumar-Vafa type invariants of $X$, which we verify in several examples. When $X$ is the local resolved conifold, our conjecture reproduces a conjectural formula of Cao-Kool-Monavari in the PT chamber. In the JS chamber, we completely determine the invariants and confirm one of our previous conjectures.

Derived categories of Thaddeus pair moduli spaces via d-critical flips

We show that the moduli spaces of Thaddeus pairs on smooth projective curves and those of dual pairs are related by d-critical flips, which are virtual birational transformations introduced by the second author. We then prove the existence of fully-faithful functors between derived categories of coherent sheaves on these moduli spaces. Our result gives an evidence of a d-critical analogue of Bondal-Orlov, Kawamata's D/K equivalence conjecture, and also a categorification of wall-crossing formula of Donaldson-Thomas type invariants on ADHM sheaves introduced by Diaconescu.

Donaldson-Thomas invariants of abelian threefolds and Bridgeland stability conditions

We study the reduced Donaldson-Thomas theory of abelian threefolds using Bridgeland stability conditions. The main result is the invariance of the reduced Donaldson-Thomas invariants under all derived autoequivalences, up to explicitly given wall-crossing terms. We also present a numerical criterion for the absence of walls in terms of a discriminant function. For principally polarized abelian threefolds of Picard rank one, the wall-crossing contributions are discussed in detail. The discussion yield evidence for a conjectural formula for curve counting invariants by Bryan, Pandharipande, Yin, and the first author. For the proof we strengthen several known results on Bridgeland stability conditions of abelian threefolds. We show that certain previously constructed stability conditions satisfy the full support property. In particular, the stability manifold is non-empty. We also prove the existence of a Gieseker chamber and determine all wall-crossing contributions. A definition of reduced generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants for arbitrary Calabi-Yau threefolds with abelian actions is given.

Hall-type algebras for categorical Donaldson-Thomas theories on local surfaces

We show that the categorified cohomological Hall algebra structures on surfaces constructed by Porta-Sala descend to those on Donaldson-Thomas categories on local surfaces introduced in the author's previous paper. A similar argument also shows that Pandharipande-Thomas categories on local surfaces admit actions of categorified COHA for zero dimensional sheaves on surfaces. We also construct annihilator actions of its simple operators, and show that their commutator in the K-theory satisfies the relation similar to the one of Weyl algebras. This result may be regarded as a categorification of Weyl algebra action on homologies of Hilbert schemes of points on locally planar curves due to Rennemo, which is relevant for Gopakumar-Vafa formula of generating series of PT invariants.

Stable pairs and Gopakumar-Vafa type invariants for Calabi-Yau 4-folds

As an analogy to Gopakumar-Vafa conjecture on CY 3-folds, Klemm-Pandharipande defined GV type invariants on CY 4-folds using GW theory and conjectured their integrality. In this paper, we define stable pair type invariants on CY 4-folds and use them to interpret these GV type invariants. Examples are computed for both compact and non-compact CY 4-folds to support our conjectures.

Genus zero Gopakumar-Vafa type invariants for Calabi-Yau 4-folds

In analogy with the Gopakumar-Vafa conjecture on CY 3-folds, Klemm and Pandharipande defined GV type invariants on Calabi-Yau 4-folds using Gromov-Witten theory and conjectured their integrality. In this paper, we propose a sheaf-theoretic interpretation of their genus zero invariants using Donaldson-Thomas theory on CY 4-folds. More specifically, we conjecture genus zero GV type invariants are $\mathrm{DT_{4}}$ invariants for one-dimensional stable sheaves on CY 4-folds. Some examples are computed for both compact and non-compact CY 4-folds to support our conjectures. We also propose an equivariant version of the conjectures for local curves and verify them in certain cases.

Contraction algebra and invariants of singularities

In [7], Donovan and Wemyss introduced the contraction algebra of flop- ping curves in 3-folds. When the flopping curve is smooth and irreducible, we prove that the contraction algebra together with its A_\infty-structure recovers various invariants associated to the underlying singularity and its small resolution, including the derived category of singularities and the genus zero Gopakuma-Vafa invariants.

Flops and the S-duality conjecture

We prove the transformation formula of Donaldson-Thomas (DT) invariants counting two dimensional torsion sheaves on Calabi-Yau 3-folds under flops. The error term is described by the Dedekind eta function and the Jacobi theta function, and our result gives evidence of a 3-fold version of Vafa-Witten's S-duality conjecture. As an application, we prove a blow-up formula of DT type invariants on the total spaces of canonical line bundles on smooth projective surfaces. It gives an analogue of the similar blow-up formula in the original S-duality conjecture by Yoshioka, Li-Qin and Göttsche.

Hall algebras in the derived category and higher rank DT invariants

We remark that the combination of the works of Ben-Bassat-Brav-Bussi-Joyce and Alper-Hall-Rydh imply the conjectured local description of the moduli stacks of semi-Schur objects in the derived category of coherent sheaves on projective Calabi-Yau 3-folds. This result was assumed in the author's previous papers to apply wall-crossing formulas of DT type invariants in the derived category, e.g. DT/PT correspondence, rationality, etc. We also show that the above result is applied to prove the higher rank version of DT/PT correspondence and rationality.

Moduli of Bridgeland semistable objects on 3-folds and Donaldson-Thomas invariants

We show that the moduli stacks of Bridgeland semistable objects on smooth projective 3-folds are proper algebraic stacks of finite type, if they satisfy the Bogomolov-Gieseker (BG for short) inequality conjecture proposed by Bayer, Macrì and the second author. The key ingredients are the equivalent form of the BG inequality conjecture and its generalization to arbitrary very weak stability conditions. This result is applied to define Donaldson-Thomas invariants counting Bridgeland semistable objects on smooth projective Calabi-Yau 3-folds satisfying the BG inequality conjecture, for example on étale quotients of abelian 3-folds.

preprint2015arXiv

Non-commutative virtual structure sheaves

The moduli spaces of stable sheaves on projective schemes admit certain gluing data of Kapranov's NC structures, which we call quasi NC structures. The formal completion of the quasi NC structure at a closed point coincides with the pro-representable hull of the non-commutative deformation functor of the corresponding sheaf. In this paper, we show the existence of smooth non-commutative dg-resolutions of the above quasi NC structures, and call them quasi NCDG structures. When there are no higher obstruction spaces, the quasi NCDG structures define the notion of NC virtual structure sheaves, the non-commutative analogue of virtual structure sheaves. We show that the NC virtual structure sheaves are described in terms of usual virtual structure sheaves together with Schur complexes of the perfect obstruction theories.

Stable pair invariants on Calabi-Yau threefolds containing P^2

We relate Pandharipande-Thomas stable pair invariants on Calabi-Yau 3-folds containing the projective plane with those on the derived equivalent orbifolds via wall-crossing method. The difference is described by generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants counting semistable sheaves on the local projective plane, whose generating series form theta type series for indefinite lattices. Our result also derives non-trivial constraints among stable pair invariants on such Calabi-Yau 3-folds caused by Seidel-Thomas twist.

Gepner point and strong Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality for quintic 3-folds

We propose a conjectural stronger version of Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality for stable sheaves on quintic 3-folds. Our conjecture is derived from an attempt to construct a Bridgeland stability condition on graded matrix factorizations, which should correspond to the Gepner point via mirror symmetry and Orlov equivalence. We prove our conjecture in the rank two case.

preprint2013arXiv

Gepner type stability condition via Orlov/Kuznetsov equivalence

We show the existence of Gepner type Bridgeland stability conditions on the triangulated categories of graded matrix factorizations associated with homogeneous polynomials which define general cubic fourfolds containing a plane. The key ingredient is to describe the grade shift functor of matrix factorizations in terms of sheaves of Clifford algebras on the projective plane under Orlov/Kuznetsov equivalence.

preprint2013arXiv

Gepner type stability conditions on graded matrix factorizations

We introduce the notion of Gepner type Bridgeland stability conditions on triangulated categories, which depends on a choice of an autoequivalence and a complex number. We conjecture the existence of Gepner type stability conditions on the triangulated categories of graded matrix factorizations of weighted homogeneous polynomials. Such a stability condition may give a natural stability condition for Landau-Ginzburg B-branes, and correspond to the Gepner point of the stringy Kahler moduli space of a quintic 3-fold. The main result is to show our conjecture when the variety defined by the weighted homogeneous polynomial is a complete intersection of hyperplanes in a Calabi-Yau manifold with dimension less than or equal to two.

S-duality for surfaces with $A_n$-type singularities

We show that the generating series of Euler characteristics of Hilbert schemes of points on any algebraic surface with at worst $A_n$-type singularities is described by the theta series determined by integer valued positive definite quadratic forms and the Dedekind eta function. In particular it is a Fourier development of a meromorphic modular form with possibly half integer weight. The key ingredient is to apply the flop transformation formula of Donaldson-Thomas type invariants counting two dimensional torsion sheaves on 3-folds proved in the author's previous paper.

Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality and counting invariants

We study a conjectural relationship among Donaldson-Thomas type invariants on Calabi-Yau 3-folds counting torsion sheaves supported on ample divisors, ideal sheaves of curves and Pandharipande-Thomas's stable pairs. The conjecture is a mathematical formulation of Denef-Moore's formula derived in the study of Ooguri-Strominger-Vafa's conjecture relating black hole entropy and topological string. The main result of this paper is to prove our conjecture assuming a conjectural Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality proposed by Bayer, Macri and the author.

Bridgeland Stability conditions on threefolds I: Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequalities

We construct new t-structures on the derived category of coherent sheaves on smooth projective threefolds. We conjecture that they give Bridgeland stability conditions near the large volume limit. We show that this conjecture is equivalent to a Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality for the third Chern character of certain stable complexes. We also conjecture a stronger inequality, and prove it in the case of projective space, and for various examples. Finally, we prove a version of the classical Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality, not involving the third Chern character, for stable complexes.

Stable pairs on local K3 surfaces

We prove a formula which relates Euler characteristic of moduli spaces of stable pairs on local K3 surfaces to counting invariants of semistable sheaves on them. Our formula generalizes Kawai-Yoshioka's formula for stable pairs with irreducible curve classes to arbitrary curve classes. We also propose a conjectural multi-covering formula of sheaf counting invariants which, combined with our main result, leads to an Euler characteristic version of Katz-Klemm-Vafa conjecture for stable pairs.

preprint2011arXiv

Curve counting theories via stable objects II: DT/ncDT flop formula

The goal of the present paper is to show the transformation formula of Donaldson-Thomas invariants on smooth projective Calabi-Yau 3-folds under birational transformations via categorical method. We also generalize the non-commutative Donaldson-Thomas invariants, introduced by B. Szendr{\H o}i in a local $(-1, -1)$-curve example, to an arbitrary flopping contraction from a smooth projective Calabi-Yau 3-fold. The transformation formula between such invariants and the usual Donaldson-Thomas invariants are also established. These formulas will be deduced from the wall-crossing formula in the space of weak stability conditions on the derived category.

preprint2011arXiv

Multiple cover formula of generalized DT invariants I: parabolic stable pairs

In this paper, we introduce the notion of parabolic stable pairs on Calabi-Yau 3-folds and invariants counting them. By applying the wall-crossing formula developed by Joyce-Song, Kontsevich-Soibelman, we see that they are related to generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants counting one dimensional semistable sheaves on Calabi-Yau 3-folds. Consequently, the conjectural multiple cover formula of generalized DT invariants is shown to be equivalent to a certain product expansion formula of the generating series of parabolic stable pair invariants. The application of this result to the multiple cover formula will be pursued in the subsequent paper.

preprint2011arXiv

Multiple cover formula of generalized DT invariants II: Jacobian localizations

The generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants counting one dimensional semistable sheaves on Calabi-Yau 3-folds are conjectured to satisfy a certain multiple cover formula. This conjecture is equivalent to Pandharipande-Thomas's strong rationality conjecture on the generating series of stable pair invariants, and its local version is enough to prove. In this paper, using Jacobian localizations and parabolic stable pair invariants introduced in the previous paper, we reduce the conjectural multiple cover formula for local curves with at worst nodal singularities to the case of local trees of smooth rational curves.

Stability conditions and curve counting invariants on Calabi-Yau 3-folds

The purpose of this paper is twofold: first we give a survey on the recent developments of curve counting invariants on Calabi-Yau 3-folds, e.g. Gromov-Witten theory, Donaldson-Thomas theory and Pandharipande-Thomas theory. Next we focus on the proof of the rationality conjecture of the generating series of PT invariants, and discuss its conjectural Gopakumar-Vafa form.

Curve counting invariants around the conifold point

In this paper, we investigate the space of certain weak stability conditions on the triangulated category of D0-D2-D6 bound states on a smooth projective Calabi-Yau 3-fold. In the case of a quintic 3-fold, the resulting space is interpreted as a universal covering space of an infinitesimal neighborhood of the conifold point in the stringy Kahler moduli space. We then construct the DT type invariants counting semistable objects in our triangulated category, which are new curve counting invariants on a Calabi-Yau 3-fold. We also investigate the wall-crossing formula of our invariants and their interplay with the Seidel-Thomas twist.
