Gauged sigma models and exceptional dressing cosets

The Poisson-Lie (PL) T-duality is a generalized T-duality based on the Lie algebra of the Drinfel'd double. In particular, when we consider the PL T-duality of a coset space, the dual space is found to be a generalized coset space, which is called the dressing coset. In this paper, we investigate an extension of the dressing cosets to the U-duality setup. We propose the gauged actions for various branes in M-theory and type IIB theory, where the generalized metric is constructed by using the Exceptional Drinfel'd Algebra (EDA) and the gauge algebra is a certain isotropic subalgebra of the EDA. By eliminating the gauge fields, the gauged action reduces to the standard brane action on a certain reduced background, which we call the exceptional dressing coset. We also propose an alternative definition of the exceptional dressing cosets based on Sfetsos's approach and reproduce a known example of non-Abelian T-duality in the U-duality-covariant formulation.

Poisson-Lie T-plurality for dressing cosets

The Poisson-Lie T-plurality is an equivalence of string theories on various cosets $\mathcal{D}/\tilde{G}$, $\mathcal{D}/\tilde{G}'$, $\cdots$, where $\mathcal{D}$ is a Drinfel'd double and $\tilde{G}$, $\tilde{G}'$, $\cdots$ are maximal isotropic subgroups. This can be extended to the equivalence for dressing cosets, i.e., $F\backslash\mathcal{D}/\tilde{G}$, $F\backslash\mathcal{D}/\tilde{G}'$, $\cdots$, where $F$ is an isotropic subgroup of $\mathcal{D}$. We explore this extended Poisson-Lie T-plurality, clarifying the relation between several previous approaches. We propose a gauged sigma model for a general gauge group $F$ and obtain the formula for the metric and the B-field on the dressing coset. Using this formula and an ansatz for the dilaton, we show that the Poisson-Lie T-plurality for dressing cosets (with spectator fields) is a symmetry of double field theory. The formula for the R-R field strength is also proposed such that the equations of motion for the NS-NS fields are transformed covariantly. In addition, we provide specific examples of the PL T-plurality for dressing cosets.

Born sigma model for branes in exceptional geometry

In double field theory, the physical space has been understood as a subspace of the doubled space. Recently, the doubled space is defined as the para-Hermitian manifold and the physical space is realized as a leaf of a foliation of the doubled space. This construction naturally introduces the fundamental 2-form, which plays an important role in a reformulation of string theory known as the Born sigma model. In this paper, we present the Born sigma model for $p$-branes in M-theory and type IIB theory by extending the fundamental 2-form into U-duality-covariant $(p+1)$-forms.

E$_{6(6)}$ Exceptional Drinfel'd Algebras

The exceptional Drinfel'd algebra (EDA) is a Leibniz algebra introduced to provide an algebraic underpinning with which to explore generalised notions of U-duality in M-theory. In essence it provides an M-theoretic analogue of the way a Drinfel'd double encodes generalised T-dualities of strings. In this note we detail the construction of the EDA in the case where the regular U-duality group is $E_{6(6)}$. We show how the EDA can be realised geometrically as a generalised Leibniz parallelisation of the exceptional generalised tangent bundle for a six-dimensional group manifold $G$, endowed with a Nambu-Lie structure. When the EDA is of coboundary type, we show how a natural generalisation of the classical Yang-Baxter equation arises. The construction is illustrated with a selection of examples including some which embed Drinfel'd doubles and others that are not of this type.

Exotic branes and mixed-symmetry potentials I: predictions from $E_{11}$ symmetry

Type II string theory or M-theory contains a broad spectrum of gauge potentials. In addition to the standard $p$-form potentials, various mixed-symmetry potentials have been predicted, which may couple to exotic branes with non-standard tensions. Together with $p$-forms, mixed-symmetry potentials turn out to be essential to build the multiplets of the U-duality symmetry in each dimension. In this paper, we systematically determine the set of mixed-symmetry potentials and exotic branes on the basis of the $E_{11}$ conjecture. We also study the decompositions of U-duality multiplets into T-duality multiplets and determine which mixed-symmetry tensors are contained in each of the U-/T-duality multiplets.

Exotic branes and mixed-symmetry potentials II: Duality rules and exceptional $p$-form gauge fields

In U-duality-manifest formulations, supergravity fields are packaged into covariant objects such as the generalized metric and $p$-form fields $\mathcal{A}_p^{I_p}$. While a parameterization of the generalized metric in terms of supergravity fields is known for U-duality groups $E_n$ with $n\leq 8$, a parameterization of $\mathcal{A}_p^{I_p}$ has not been fully determined. In this paper, we propose a systematic method to determine the parameterization of $\mathcal{A}_p^{I_p}$, which necessarily involves mixed-symmetry potentials. We also show how to systematically obtain the T- and S-duality transformation rules of the mixed-symmetry potentials entering the multiplet. As the simplest non-trivial application, we find the parameterization and the duality rules associated with the dual graviton. Additionally, we show that the 1-form field $\mathcal{A}_1^{I_1}$ can be regarded as the generalized graviphoton in the exceptional spacetime.

Extended Drinfel'd algebras and non-Abelian duality

A Drinfel'd algebra gives the systematic construction of generalized parallelizable spaces and this allows us to study an extended T-duality, known as the Poisson-Lie T-duality. Recently, in order to find a generalized U-duality, an extended Drinfel'd algebra (ExDA), called the Exceptional Drinfel'd algebra (EDA) was proposed and a natural extension of the usual U-duality was studied both in the context of supergravity and membrane theory. In this paper, we clarify the general structure of ExDAs and show that an ExDA always gives a generalized parallelizable space, which may be regarded as a group manifold with generalized Nambu-Lie structures. We also discuss generalized Yang-Baxter deformations that are based on coboundary ExDAs. As important examples, we consider the $E_{n(n)}$ EDA for $n\leq 8$ and study various aspects, both in terms of M-theory and type IIB theory.

Non-Abelian U-duality for membrane

T-duality of string theory can be extended to the Poisson-Lie T-duality when the target space has a generalized isometry group given by a Drinfel'd double. In M-theory, T-duality is understood as a subgroup of U-duality, but the non-Abelian extension of U-duality is still a mystery. In this paper, we study membrane theory on a curved background with a generalized isometry group given by the $\mathcal{E}_n$ algebra. This provides a natural setup to study non-Abelian U-duality because the $\mathcal{E}_n$ algebra has been proposed as a U-duality extension of the Drinfel'd double. We show that the standard treatment of Abelian U-duality can be extended to the non-Abelian setup. However, a famous issue in Abelian U-duality still exists in the non-Abelian extension.

U-duality extension of Drinfel'd double

A family of algebras $\mathcal{E}_n$ that extends the Lie algebra of the Drinfel'd double is proposed. This allows us to systematically construct the generalized frame fields $E_A{}^I$ which realize the proposed algebra by means of the generalized Lie derivative, i.e., $\hat{\mathcal{L}}_{E_A}E_B{}^I = - \mathcal{F}_{AB}{}^C\,E_C{}^I$. By construction, the generalized frame fields include a twist by a Nambu-Poisson tensor. A possible application to the non-Abelian extension of U-duality and a generalization of the Yang-Baxter deformation are also discussed.

Duality rules for more mixed-symmetry potentials

T- and S-duality rules among the gauge potentials in type II supergravities are studied. In particular, by following the approach of arXiv:1909.01335, we determine the T- and S-duality rules for certain mixed-symmetry potentials, which couple to supersymmetric branes with tension $T\propto g_s^{-n}$ ($n\leq 4$). Although the T-duality rules are rather intricate, we find a certain redefinition of potentials which considerably simplifies the duality rules. After the redefinition, potentials are identified with components of the T-duality-covariant potentials, which have been predicted by the $E_{11}$ conjecture. We also discuss the field strengths of the mixed-symmetry potentials.

Branes in Extended Spacetime: Brane Worldvolume Theory Based on Duality Symmetry

We propose a novel approach to the brane worldvolume theory based on the geometry of extended field theories: double field theory and exceptional field theory. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach by showing that one can reproduce the conventional bosonic string and membrane actions, and the M5-brane action in the weak-field approximation. At a glance, the proposed 5-brane action without approximation looks different from the known M5-brane actions, but it is consistent with the known nonlinear self-duality relation, and it may provide a new formulation of a single M5-brane action. Actions for exotic branes are also discussed.

Finite Transformations in Doubled and Exceptional Space

In the double field theory, gauge symmetries are realized as generalized diffeomorphisms in the doubled spacetime. By consistency of the theory, dependence of tensor fields on the doubled coordinates is strongly constrained. This causes finite transformation law highly complicated, both technically and conceptually. In this paper, we propose a new, physically intuitive approach to finite gauge transformations by utilizing untwisted form of vector fields. In our approach, finite gauge transformation law is expressed in terms of diffeomorphisms on a maximal null subspace on which dynamical degrees of freedom live and of a local rotation of this null subspace embedded inside the doubled space. We show that our finite transformation automatically satisfies the composition law. We also show that ours is free from the so-called Papadopoulos problem, so can describe background with nontrivial three-form flux $H_3$. Added advantage of our approach is straightforward applicability to general extended field theories. We demonstrate this by explicitly obtaining finite transformation law in the SL(5) exceptional field theory.

$\mathbf{O}(D,D)$ Covariant Noether Currents and Global Charges in Double Field Theory

Double field theory is an approach for massless modes of string theory, unifying and geometrizing all gauge invariance in manifest $\mathbf{O}(D,D)$ covariant manner. In this approach, we derive off-shell conserved Noether current and corresponding Noether potential associated with unified gauge invariance. We add Wald-type counter two-form to the Noether potential and define conserved global charges as surface integral. We check our $\mathbf{O}(D,D)$ covariant formula against various string backgrounds, both geometric and non-geometric. In all cases we examined, we find perfect agreements with previous results. Our formula facilitates to evaluate momenta along not only ordinary spacetime directions but also dual spacetime directions on equal footing. From this, we confirm recent assertion that null wave in doubled spacetime is the same as macroscopic fundamental string in ordinary spacetime.

Defect branes as Alice strings

There exist various defect-brane backgrounds in supergravity theories which arise as the low energy limit of string theories. These backgrounds typically have non-trivial monodromies, and if we move a charged probe around the center of a defect, its charge will be changed by the action of the monodromy. During the process, the charge conservation law seems to be violated. In this paper, to resolve this puzzle, we examine a dynamics of the charge changing process and show that the missing charge of the probe is transferred to the background. We then explicitly construct the resultant background after the charge transfer process by utilizing dualities. This background has the same monodromy as the original defect brane, but has an additional charge which does not have any localized source. In the literature, such a charge without localized source is known to appear in the presence of Alice strings. We argue that defect branes can in fact be regarded as a realization of Alice strings in string theory and examine the charge transfer process from that perspective.

Exotic branes and non-geometric fluxes

We present and study ten-dimensional effective actions for various non-geometric fluxes of which exotic branes act as the magnetic sources. Each theory can be regarded as a U-dual version of the $β$-supergravity, a reformulation of the ten-dimensional supergravity which is suitable for describing non-geometric backgrounds with Q-flux. In each theory, we find a solution that corresponds to the background of an exotic brane and show that it is single-valued up to a gauge transformation, although the same background written in the standard background fields is not single-valued in a usual sense. Further, we also find a solution which corresponds to the background of an instanton that is the electric dual of the exotic brane and discuss its properties.

Master equation for the Unruh-DeWitt detector and the universal relaxation time in de Sitter space

We derive the master equation that completely determines the time evolution of the density matrix of the Unruh-DeWitt detector in an arbitrary background geometry. We apply the equation to reveal a nonequilibrium thermodynamic character of de Sitter space. This generalizes an earlier study on the thermodynamic property of the Bunch-Davies vacuum that an Unruh-DeWitt detector staying in the Poincare patch and interacting with a scalar field in the Bunch-Davies vacuum behaves as if it is in a thermal bath of finite temperature. In this paper, instead of the Bunch-Davies vacuum, we consider a class of initial states of scalar field, for which the detector behaves as if it is in a medium that is not in thermodynamic equilibrium and that undergoes a relaxation to the equilibrium corresponding to the Bunch-Davies vacuum. We give a prescription for calculating the relaxation times of the nonequilibrium processes. We particularly show that, when the initial state of the scalar field is the instantaneous ground state at a finite past, the relaxation time is always given by a universal value of half the curvature radius of de Sitter space. We expect that the relaxation time gives a nonequilibrium thermodynamic quantity intrinsic to de Sitter space.

Propagators in de Sitter space

In a spacetime with no global timelike Killing vector, we do not have a natural choice for the vacuum state of matter fields, leading to an ambiguity in defining the Feynman propagators. In this paper, taking the vacuum state to be the instantaneous ground state of the Hamiltonian at each moment, we develop a method for calculating wave functions associated with the vacuum and the corresponding in-in and in-out propagators. We apply this method to free scalar field theory in de Sitter space and obtain de Sitter invariant propagators in various coordinate patches. We show that the in-out propagator in the Poincare patch has a finite massless limit in a de Sitter invariant form. We argue and numerically check that our in-out propagators agree with those obtained by a path integral with the standard iεprescription, and identify the condition on a foliation of spacetime under which such coincidence can happen for the foliation. We also show that the in-out propagators satisfy Polyakov's composition law. Several applications of our framework are also discussed.

Conformal higher-order viscoelastic fluid mechanics

We present a generally covariant formulation of conformal higher-order viscoelastic fluid mechanics with strain allowed to take arbitrarily large values. We give a general prescription to determine the dynamics of a relativistic viscoelastic fluid in a way consistent with the hypothesis of local thermodynamic equilibrium and the second law of thermodynamics. We then elaborately study the transient time scales at which the strain almost relaxes and becomes proportional to the gradients of velocity. We particularly show that a conformal second-order fluid with all possible parameters in the constitutive equations can be obtained without breaking the hypothesis of local thermodynamic equilibrium, if the conformal fluid is defined as the long time limit of a conformal second-order viscoelastic system. We also discuss how local thermodynamic equilibrium could be understood in the context of the fluid/gravity correspondence.

Rotating string in doubled geometry with generalized isometries

In this paper, we first construct a globally well-defined non-geometric background which contains several branes in type II string theory compactified on a 7-torus. One of these branes is called 5^2_2, which is a codimension-2 object and has a non-trivial monodromy given by a T-duality transformation. The geometry near the 5^2_2-brane is shown to approach the non-geometric background constructed in arXiv:1004.2521. We then construct the solution of a fundamental string rotating along a non-trivial cycle in the 5^2_2 background. Although the background is not axisymmetric in the usual sense, we show that it is actually axisymmetric as a doubled geometry by explicitly finding a generalized Killing vector. We perform a generalized coordinate transformation into a system where the generalized isometry is manifest, and show that the winding and momentum charges of the string solution is explicitly conserved in that system.

Entropic formulation of relativistic continuum mechanics

An entropic formulation of relativistic continuum mechanics is developed in the Landau-Lifshitz frame. We introduce two spatial scales, one being the small scale representing the linear size of each material particle and the other the large scale representing the linear size of a large system which consists of the material particles and is to linearly regress to the equilibrium. We propose a local functional which is expected to represent the total entropy of the larger system and require the entropy functional to be maximized in the process of linear regression. We show that Onsager's original idea on linear regression can then be realized explicitly as current conservations with dissipative currents in the desired form. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this formulation by showing that one can treat a wide class of relativistic continuum materials, including standard relativistic viscous fluids and relativistic viscoelastic materials.

preprint2011arXiv

Relativistic viscoelastic fluid mechanics

A detailed study is carried out for the relativistic theory of viscoelasticity which was recently constructed on the basis of Onsager's linear nonequilibrium thermodynamics. After rederiving the theory using a local argument with the entropy current, we show that this theory universally reduces to the standard relativistic Navier-Stokes fluid mechanics in the long time limit. Since effects of elasticity are taken into account, the dynamics at short time scales is modified from that given by the Navier-Stokes equations, so that acausal problems intrinsic to relativistic Navier-Stokes fluids are significantly remedied. We in particular show that the wave equations for the propagation of disturbance around a hydrostatic equilibrium in Minkowski spacetime become symmetric hyperbolic for some range of parameters, so that the model is free of acausality problems. This observation suggests that the relativistic viscoelastic model with such parameters can be regarded as a causal completion of relativistic Navier-Stokes fluid mechanics. By adjusting parameters to various values, this theory can treat a wide variety of materials including elastic materials, Maxwell materials, Kelvin-Voigt materials, and (a nonlinearly generalized version of) simplified Israel-Stewart fluids, and thus we expect the theory to be the most universal description of single-component relativistic continuum materials. We also show that the presence of strains and the corresponding change in temperature are naturally unified through the Tolman law in a generally covariant description of continuum mechanics.
