A POD-DeepONet Framework for Forward and Inverse Design of 2D Photonic Crystals

We develop a reduced-order operator-learning framework for forward and inverse band-structure design of two-dimensional photonic crystals with binary, pixel-based $p4m$-symmetric unit cells. We construct a POD--DeepONet surrogate for the discrete band map along the standard high-symmetry path by coupling a POD trunk extracted from high-fidelity finite-element band snapshots with a neural branch network that predicts reduced coefficients. This architecture yields a compact and differentiable forward model that is tailored to the underlying Bloch eigenvalue discretization. We establish continuity of the discrete band map on the relaxed design space and prove a uniform approximation property of the POD--DeepONet surrogate, leading to a natural decomposition of the total surrogate error into POD truncation and network approximation contributions. Building on this forward surrogate, we formulate two end-to-end neural inverse design procedures, namely dispersion-to-structure and band-gap inverse design, with training objectives that combine data misfit, binarity promotion, and supervised regularization to address the intrinsic non-uniqueness of the inverse mapping and to enable stable gradient-based optimization in the relaxed space. Our numerical results show that the proposed framework achieves accurate forward predictions and produces effective inverse designs on practical high-contrast, pixel-based photonic layouts.

Searching for the charged-current non-standard neutrino interactions at the $e^{-}p$ colliders

Considering the theoretical constraints on the charged-current (CC) non-standard neutrino interaction (NSI) parameters in a simplified $W'$ model, we study the sensitivities of the Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) and Future Circular Collider-hadron electron (FCC-he) to the CC NSI parameters through the subprocess $e^{-}q \to W' \to v_{e}q'$. Our results show that the LHeC with $\mathcal{L} = 100\;{\rm fb}^{-1}$ is a little more sensitive to the CC NSI parameters than that of the high-luminosity (HL) LHC, and the absolute values of the lower limits on the CC NSI parameters at the FCC-he are smaller than those of the HL-LHC about two orders of magnitude.

Neural Clustering Processes

Probabilistic clustering models (or equivalently, mixture models) are basic building blocks in countless statistical models and involve latent random variables over discrete spaces. For these models, posterior inference methods can be inaccurate and/or very slow. In this work we introduce deep network architectures trained with labeled samples from any generative model of clustered datasets. At test time, the networks generate approximate posterior samples of cluster labels for any new dataset of arbitrary size. We develop two complementary approaches to this task, requiring either O(N) or O(K) network forward passes per dataset, where N is the dataset size and K the number of clusters. Unlike previous approaches, our methods sample the labels of all the data points from a well-defined posterior, and can learn nonparametric Bayesian posteriors since they do not limit the number of mixture components. As a scientific application, we present a novel approach to neural spike sorting for high-density multielectrode arrays.
