Chiral dynamics with confinement versus the standard chiral theory

Chiral dynamics is investigated using the chiral confining Lagrangian (CCL), previously derived from QCD with confinement interaction. Based on the calculations of the quark condensate, which is defined entirely by confinement in the zero quark mass limit, one can assert that chiral symmetry breaking occurs not spontaneously but is predetermined by confinement. The expansion of the CCL provides the GMOR relations and the effective chiral Lagrangian, which is used to provide the masses and decay constants of all chiral mesons, including $η,η'$. For the latter one needs to define a non-chiral component due to confinement, while the orthogonality condition defines the wave functions and the eigenvalues. The resulting masses and decay constants of all chiral mesons are obtained in good agreement with experimental and lattice data.

Hadron wave functions in high-energy scattering, form factors and strong decays: the effects of the Lorentz contracted form

We study the class of processes where the dynamics depends essentially on the properties of the hadron wave functions involved in the reactions. In this case the momentum dependence of the form of wave functions imposed by Lorentz invariance and in particular by the Lorentz contraction can be tested in the experiment and may strongly influence the resulting cross sections. One example of such observables is given by the hadron form factors, where it was shown that the large Q behavior is mostly frozen, when the Lorentz contraction of the hadron wave functions is taken into account. Another example considered previously is the strong hadron decay with high energy emission. In this paper we study the role of the Lorentz contraction in the high-energy hadron-hadron scattering process at large momentum transfer. For the $pp$ and $p\bar p$ scattering at large $s$ it is shown that at small $-t << s$ the picture of two exponential slopes in the differential cross section explained previously by the author is stable while the backward scattering cross section is strongly increased by the Lorentz contraction.

The fundamental scale of QCD

There are several scales in the QCD as the theory of strong interaction: the vacuum gluonic condensate (as the divergence of the dilatation current), the nucleon mass as the basic mass scale in our universe, which is connected to the string tension $σ$, and the perturbative QCD scale $Λ_{\rm QCD}$, which defines the scale of the renormalized perturbative expansions. In this paper we connect all these scales to the vacuum condensate, using the field correlator method, where the string tension is expressed in terms of nonlocal field correlators, which are connected to the local condensates, while the perturbative $Λ_V$ is connected to $σ$ in the framework of the Background Perturbation Theory (BPT). We also demonstrate how the IR singularities and IR renormalons disappear in BPT making the resulting theory internally consistent.

Scalar mesons in the chiral theory with quark degrees of freedom

The Chiral Confining Lagrangian, based on the chiral theory with quark degrees of freedom, is used to study the spectroscopy of scalar mesons. The formalism does not contain arbitrary fitting parameters and takes into account infinite number of transitions from meson-meson to quark-antiquark states. Starting from known $q\bar q$ poles the transition coefficients ensure the strong shift of the poles for the $ππ$ and much smaller shift for the $K\bar K$ systems. The resulting amplitudes $f_{ππ}$ and $f_{K\bar K}$ are calculated in terms of the $q\bar q$ and the free meson Green's functions. With the account of the $ππ/K\bar{K}$ channel coupling one obtains two resonances: a wide resonance $E_1$ in the range 500-700 MeV and narrow $E_2 $ near 1 GeV, which can be associated with $f_0(500)$ and $f_0(980)$. A similar analysis, applied to the $I=1$ channel, shows that in this case two very close poles in different sheets appear near $E=980$ MeV, which can be associated with the $a_0 (980)$ resonance. The obtained $ππ$ interaction amplitudes, $\operatorname{Re} f_{ππ} (E)$ and $\operatorname{Im} f_{ππ}(E)$ are compared with the known data.

Dense Quark-Gluon Plasma in strong magnetic fields

A non-perturbative (np) method of Field Correlators (FCM) was applied to study QCD at temperatures above the deconfinement transition ($1<T/T_c<3,~T_c\sim0.16~GeV$) and nonzero baryon densities (baryon chemical potential $μ_B<0.5~GeV$) in an external uniform magnetic field ($eB<0.5~GeV^2$). Within FCM, the np high-temperature dynamics is embodied in the Polyakov loop and in the Debye mass due to the Color-Magnetic Confinement. Analytic expressions for quark pressure and magnetic susceptibility were obtained. The expressions were represented as series and in integral form. Magnetic susceptibility was found to increase rapidly with temperature and slowly with density. The results at the zero density limit are in agreement with lattice data.

Chiral Lagrangian and chiral quark model from confinement in QCD

The effective chiral Lagrangian in both nonlocal form $L_{ECCL}$ and standard local form $L_{ECL}$ are derived in QCD using the confining kernel, obtained in the vacuum correlator formalism. As a result all coefficients of $L_{ECL}$ can be computed via $q\bar q$ Green's functions. In the $p^2$ order of $L_{ECL}$ one obtains GOR relations and quark decay constants $f_a$ are calculated $a=1,...8$, while in the $p^4$ order the coefficients $L_1, L_2, L_3,L_4, L_5, L_6$ are obtained in good agreement with the values given by data. The chiral quark model is shown to be a simple consequence of $L_{ECCL}$ with defined coefficients. It is demonstrated that $L_{ECCL}$ gives an extension of the limiting low-energy Lagrangian $L_{ECL}$ to arbitrary momenta.

Dynamical role of Polyakov loops in the QCD thermodynamics

Polyakov loops $L_a(T), a=3,8,...$ are shown to give the most important nonperturbative contribution to the thermodynamic potentials. Derived from the gluonic field correlators they enter as factors into free energy. It is shown in the $SU(3)$ case that $L_a (T)$ define to a large extent the behavior of the free energy and the trace anomaly $I(T)$, most sensitive to nonperturbative effects.

Nonperturbative approach to the parton model

The nonperturbative parton distributions, obtained from the Lorentz contracted wave functions, are analyzed in the formalism of many-particle Fock components and their properties are compared to the standard perturbative distributions. We show that the collinear and IR divergencies specific for perturbative evolution treatment are absent in the nonperturbative version, however for large momenta< $ \vep^2_i \gg σ$ (string tension), the bremsstrahlung kinematics is restored. A preliminary discussion of possible nonperturbative effects in DIS and high energy scattering is given, including in particular a possible role of multihybrid states in creating ridge-type effects.

The Higgs Mechanism from an extra dimension

The standard $SU(2) \times U(1)$ fields are considered in 4D plus one extra compact dimension. As a result two basic effects are obtained. First, four Goldstone-like scalars are produced, three of them are used to create longitudinal modes of the $W,Z$ fields, while the fourth becomes the Higgs-like scalar. Second, $W$ and $Z$ get their masses from the extra compact dimension with the standard pattern of symmetry violation. The resulting theory has the same fields as in the standard model, but without the Higgs vacuum average. The properties of the new Higgs scalar and its interaction with fermions are briefly discussed.

Confinement and $α_s$ in a strong magnetic field

Hadron decay widths are shown to increase in strong magnetic fields as $Γ(eB) \sim \frac{eB}κ Γ(0)$. The same mechanism is shown to be present in the production of the sea quark pair inside the confining string, which decreases the string tension with the growing $eB$ parallel to the string . On the other hand, the average energy of the $q\bar q$ holes in the string world sheet increases, when the direction of $\mathbf{B}$ is perpendicular to the sheet. These two effects stipulate the spectacular picture of the $\mathbf{B}$ dependent confinement and $α_s$, discovered on the lattice.

Nonperturbative parton distributions and the proton spin problem

The Lorentz contracted form of the static wave functions is used to calculate the valence parton distributions for mesons and baryons, boosting the rest frame solutions of the path integral Hamiltonian. It is argued that nonperturbative parton densities are due to excited multigluon baryon states. A simple model is proposed for these states ensuring realistic behavior of valence and sea quarks and gluon parton densities at $Q^2= 10 (GeV/c)^2$. Applying the same model to the proton spin problem one obtains $Σ_3 = 0.18 $ for the same $Q^2$.

The $c\bar c$ interaction above threshold and the radiative decay $X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψγ$

Radiative decays of $X(3872)$ are studied in single-channel approximation (SCA) and in the coupled-channel (CC) approach, where the decay channels $D\bar D^*$ are described with the string breaking mechanism. In SCA the transition rate $\tildeΓ_2=Γ(2\,{}^3P_1 \rightarrow ψγ)=71.8$~keV and large $\tildeΓ_1=Γ(2\,{}^3P_1\rightarrow J/ψγ)=85.4$~keV are obtained, giving for their ratio the value $\tilde{R_{ψγ}}=\frac{\tildeΓ_2}{\tildeΓ_1}=0.84$. In the CC approach three factors are shown to be equally important. First, the admixture of the $1\,{}^3P_1$ component in the normalized wave function of $X(3872)$ due to the CC effects. Its weight $c_{\rm X}(E_{\rm R})=0.200\pm 0.015$ is calculated. Secondly, the use of the multipole function $g(r)$ instead of $r$ in the overlap integrals, determining the partial widths. Thirdly, the choice of the gluon-exchange interaction for $X(3872)$, as well as for other states above threshold. If for $X(3872)$ the gluon-exchange potential is taken the same as for low-lying charmonium states, then in the CC approach $Γ_1= Γ(X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψγ) \sim 3$~keV is very small, giving the large ratio $R_{ψγ}=\frac{\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\rightarrow ψ(2S)γ)}{\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψγ)}\gg 1.0$. Arguments are presented why the gluon-exchange interaction may be suppressed for $X(3872)$ and in this case $Γ_1=42.7$~keV, $Γ_2= 70.5$~keV, and $R_{ψγ}=1.65$ are predicted for the minimal value $c_{\rm X}({\rm min})=0.185$, while for the maximal value $c_{\rm X}=0.215$ we obtained $Γ_1=30.8$~keV, $Γ_2=73.2$~keV, and $R_{ψγ}=2.38$, which agrees with the LHCb data.

Boosting QED and QCD bound states in the path integral formalism

Wave functions and energy eigenvalues of the path integral Hamiltonian are studied in Lorentz frame moving with velocity $v$. The instantaneous interaction produced by the Wilson loop is shown to be reduced by an overall factor $\sqrt{1-(\frac{v}{c})^2}$. As a result one obtains the boosted energy eigenvalues in the Lorentz covariant form $E= \sqrt{\veP^2+M^2_0}$, where $M_0$ is the c.m. energy, and this form is tested for two free particles and for the Coulomb and linear interaction.Using Lorentz contracted wave functions of the bound states one obtains the scaled parton wave functions and valence quark distributions for large $P$. Matrix elements containing wave functions moving with different velocities strongly decrease with growing relative momentum, e.g. for the time-like formfactors one obtains $F_h(Q_0)\sim (\frac{M_h}{Q_0})^{2 n_h} $ with $n_h = 1$ and 2 for mesons and baryons, as in the "quark counting rule".

Magnetic susceptibility at zero and nonzero chemical potential in QCD and QED

Magnetic susceptibility of the quark matter in QCD is calculated in a closed form for an arbitrary chemical potential μ. For small μ, μ<<T, eB << T^2, a strong dependence on temperature T is found due to Polyakov line factors. In the opposite case of small T, eB > T^2, the oscillations as functions of eB occur, characteristic of the de Haas-van Alphen effect. Results are compared with available lattice data.

Magnetic susceptibility in QCD

Magnetic susceptibility in the deconfined phase of QCD is calculated in a closed form using a recent general expression for the quark gas pressure in magnetic field. Quark selfenergies are entering the result via Polyakov line factors and ensure the total paramagnetic effect, increasing with temperature. A generalized form of magnetic susceptibility in nonzero magnetic field suitable for experimental and lattice measurements is derived, showing a good agreement with available lattice data.

QED spectra in the path integral formalism

Relativistic Hamiltonians, derived from the path integrals, are known to provide a simple and useful formalism for hadrons spectroscopy in QCD. The accuracy of this approach is tested using the QED systems, and the calculated spectrum is shown to reproduce exactly that of the Dirac hydrogen atom, while the Breit-Fermi nonrelativistic expansion is obtained using Foldy-Wouthuizen transformation. Calculated positronium spectrum, including spin-dependent terms, coincides with the standard QED perturbation theory to the considered order O(alpha^s).

Magnetic focusing in atomic, nuclear and hadronic processes

Processes with oppositely charged spinor particles in initial and/or final states in homogeneous magnetic field B are subject to focusing effects in their relative motion, which yield the amplifying factors in probabilities growing as $eB$. In addition the increasing energy of some Landau levels influences the phase space. As a result some processes in the proper spin states can be enlarged as $\sim \frac{eB}{κ^2}$, where $κ^2$ is the characteristic 2d phase space factor available without magnetic field. Several examples, including neutron $β$ decay, positronium decay and $e^+e^-$ pair production, are quantitatively considered.

Magnetic moments of mesons

Magnetic moments of charged and neutral mesons are calculated with the use of the relativistic Hamiltonian derived from the path integral form of the $q_1\bar q_2$ Green's function. The magnetic moments are shown to be expressed via the average quark energies which are defined by the fundamental quantities: the string tension $σ$, the current quark masses, and the strong coupling constant $α_s$. Resulting values for vector, axial, and tensor light and $K$ mesons agree well with all available lattice data.

Magnetic test of chiral dynamics in QCD

Strong magnetic fields in the range $ eB\gg m^2_π$ effectively probe internal quark structure of chiral mesons and test basic parameters of chiral theory, such as $\lan\bar q q\ran, f_π$. We argue on general grounds that $\lan\bar q q\ran$ should grow linearly with $eB$ when charged quark degrees of freedom come into play. To make explicit estimates we extend previously formulated chiral theory, including quark degrees of freedom, to the case of strong magnetic fields and show that the quark condensate $|\lan \bar q q\ran|_{u,d}$ grows quadratically with $eB$ for $eB\la 0.2$ GeV$^2$ and linearly for higher field values. These results agree quantitatively with recent lattice data and differ from $χPT$ predictions.

Meson Spectrum in Strong Magnetic Fields

We study the relativistic quark-antiquark system embedded in magnetic field. The Hamiltonian containing confinement, one gluon exchange and spin-spin interaction is derived. We analytically follow the evolution of the lowest meson states as a functions of MF strength. Calculating the one gluon exchange interaction energy <V_OGE> and spin-spin contribution <a_SS> we have observed, that these corrections remain finite at large magnetic fields, preventing the vanishing of the total rho-meson mass at some B_crit, as previously thought. We display the rho masses as functions of magnetic field in comparison with recent lattice data.

Nambu-Goldstone mesons in strong magnetic field

We study the q \bar q structure embedded in chiral mesons in response to external magnetic fields, using the chiral Lagrangian with q \bar q degrees of freedom derived earlier. We show that GMOR relations hold true for neutral chiral mesons, while they are violated for the charged ones for eB>sigma=0.2 GeV^2. The standard chiral perturbation theory also fails in this region. Masses of pi^+ and pi^0 mesons are calculated and compared to lattice data.

Neutron in Strong Magnetic Fields

Relativistic world-line Hamiltonian for strongly interacting 3q systems in magnetic field is derived from the path integral for the corresponding Green's function. The neutral baryon Hamiltonian in magnetic field obeys the pseudomomentum conservation and allows a factorization of the c.m. and internal motion. The resulting expression for the baryon mass in magnetic field is written explicitly with the account of hyperfine, OPE and OGE (color Coulomb) interaction. The neutron mass is fast decreasing with magnetic field, losing 1/2 of its value at eB~0.25 GeV^2 and is nearly zero at eB~0.5 GeV^2. Possible physical consequences of the calculated mass trajectory of the neutron, M_n(B), are presented and discussed.

Quark mass dependence of the QCD temperature transition in magnetic fields

Vacuum energy of quarks participates in the pressure balance at the temperature transition T_c and defines the dependence of T_c on m_q. We first check this dependence in absence of magnetic fields eB vs known lattice data, and then take into account the known strong dependence of the quark condensate on eB. The resulting function T_c(eB, m_q) is valid for all eB, m_q< \sqrtσand explains the corresponding lattice data.

Relativistic path integral and relativistic Hamiltonians in QCD and QED

The proper-time 4d path integral is used as a starting point to derive the new explicit parametric form of the quark-antiquark Green's function in gluonic and QED fields, entering as a common Wilson loop. The subsequent vacuum averaging of the latter allows to derive the instantaneous Hamiltonian. The explicit form and solutions are given in the case of the $q\bar q$ mesons in magnetic field.

Spin interactions in mesons in strong magnetic field

Spin interactions in relativistic quark-antiquark system in magnetic field is considered in the framework of the relativistic Hamiltonian, derived from the QCD path integral. The formalism allows to separate spin-dependent terms from the basic spin-independent interaction, contained in the Wilson loop, and producing confining and gluon exchange interaction. As a result one obtains relativistic spin-spin interaction $V_{ss}$, generalizing its nonrelativistic analog. It is shown, that in large magnetic field $eB, V_{ss}$ modifies and produces hyperfine shifts which grow linearly with $eB$ and preclude the use of perturbation theory. We also show, that tensor forces for $eB \neq 0$ are active in all meson states, but do not grow with $eB$

The quark-hadron thermodynamics in magnetic field

Nonperturbative treatment of quark-hadron transition at nonzero temperature T and chemical potential mu in the framework of Field Correlator Method is generalized to the case of nonzero magnetic field B. A compact form of the quark pressure for arbitrary B, mu, T is derived. As a result the transition temperature is found as a function of B and mu, which depends on only parameters: vacuum gluonic condensate G_2 and the field correlator D_1^E(x), which defines the Polyakov loops and it is known both analytically and on the lattice. A moderate (25%) decrease of T_c(mu=0) for eB changing from zero to 1 GeV^2 is found. A sequence of transition curves in the (mu, T) plane is obtained for B in the same interval, monotonically decreasing in scale for growing B.

Analysis of the QCD spectrum and chiral symmetry breaking with varying quark masses

The meson spectrum of QCD is studied in the framework of nonperturbative QCD as a function of varying quark masses $m_q$. It is shown, that the total spectrum consists of two branches: 1) the standard one, which may be called the flux-tube spectrum, depending approximately linearly on $m_q$ and 2) the chiral symmetry breaking (CSB) spectrum for pseudoscalar flavor nonsinglet (PS) mesons, with mass dependence $\sqrt{m_q}$. The formalism for PS mesons is derived from the QCD Lagrangian with $m_q$ corrections, and a unified form of the PS propagator was derived. It is shown, that the CSB branch of PS mesons joins to the flux-tube branch at around $m_q=200$ MeV. All these results are in close correspondence with recent numerical data on large lattices.

Asymptotic freedom in strong magnetic field

Perturbative gluon exchange interaction between quark and antiquark, or in a 3q system, is enhanced in magnetic field and may cause vanishing of the total q\bar q or 3q mass, and even unlimited decrease of it - recently called the magnetic collapse of QCD. The analysis of the one-loop correction below shows a considerable softening of this phenomenon due to q\bar q loop contribution, similarly to the Coulomb case of QED, leading to approximately logarithmic dumping of gluon exchange interaction at large magnetic field.

Mass generation with adjoint fermions

The QCD-like gauge theory with adjoint fermions is considered in the field correlator formalism and the total spectrum of mesons and glueballs is obtained in agreement with available lattice data. A new state of a white fermion appears, as a bound state of the adjoint fermion and gluon with the mass close to that of glueball. It is shown, that the main features of spectra and thermodynamics of adjoint fermions can be explained by this new bound state.

Microscopic study of the string breaking in QCD

Theory of strong decays defines in addition to decay widths, also the channel coupling and the mass shifts of the levels above the decay thresholds. In the standard decay models of the 3P0 type the decay vertex is taken to be a phenomenological constant "gamma" and such a choice leads to large mass shifts of all meson levels due to real and virtual decays, the latter giving a divergent contribution. Here we show that taking the microscopic details of decay vertex into account, one obtains new string width coefficient, which strongly suppresses virtual decay contribution. In addition for a realistic space structure of the decay vertex of highly excited states, the decay matrix elements appear to be strongly different from those, where the constant "gamma" is used. From our analysis also follows that so-called flattening potential can imitate the effects of intermediate decay channels.

Quark-Antiquark System in Ultra-Intense Magnetic Field

We study the relativistic quark-antiquark system embedded in magnetic field (MF). The Hamiltonian containing confinement, color Coulomb and spin-spin interaction is derived. We analytically follow the evolution of the lowest neutral meson state as a function of MF strength. Calculating the color Coulomb energy $V_{Coul}$ we have observed the unbounded negative (at least in the limit of large $N_c$) contribution at large MF which makes the mass negative for $eB> eB^{QCD}_{crit}$. We display the $π^0$ and $ρ^0$ masses as functions of MF in comparison with recent lattice data.

The ratio of decay widths of X(3872) to $ ψ^{\prime}γ$ and $ J/ψγ$ as a test of the X(3872) dynamical structure

Radiative decays of X(3872) with $J^{PC}=1^{++}$ are studied in the coupled-channel approach, where the $c\bar c$ states are described by relativistic string Hamiltonian, while for the decay channels $DD^*$ a string breaking mechanism is used. Within this method a sharp peak and correct mass shift of the $2 {}^3P_1$ charmonium state just to the $D^0D^{*0}$ threshold was already obtained for a prescribed channel coupling to the $DD^*$ decay channels. For the same value of coupling the normalized wave function (w.f.) of X(3872) acquires admixture of the $1 {}^3P_1$ component with the w.f. fraction $c_1=0.153 (θ=8.8^\circ$), which increases the transition rate $Γ(X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψγ)$ up to 50-70 keV, making the ratio $R=\frac{\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\rightarrow ψ^{\prime}γ)}{\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψγ)}=0.8\pm 0.20 (th)$ significantly smaller, as compared to $R\simeq 5$ for X(3872) as a purely $2 {}^3P_1$ state.

Theory of hadron decay into baryon-antibaryon final state

The nonperturbative mechanism of baryon-antibaryon production due to double quark pair $(q\bar q)$($q\bar q)$ generation inside a hadron is considered and the amplitude is calculated as matrix element of the vertex operator between initial and final hadron wave functions. The vertex operator is expressed solely in terms of first principle input: current quark masses, string tension $σ$ and $α_s$. In contrast to meson-meson production via single pair generation, in baryon case a new entity appears in the vertex: the vacuum correlation length $λ$, which was computed before through string tension $σ$. As an application electroproduction of $Λ_c \barΛ_c$ was calculated and an enhancement near 4.61 GeV was found in agreement with recent experimental data.

Binding Energies and Melting Temperatures of Heavy Hadrons in Quark-Gluon Plasma

We analyze the static potential of a quark-antiquark pair at $T\,\geq\,T_c$, where $T_c$ is a temperature of a deconfinement phase transition in QCD. We discuss the possibility that the non-perturbative part of this potential can be studied through the modification of the correlation functions, which define the quadratic field correlators of the nonperturbative vaccuum fields. We use the non-perturbative quark-antiquark potential derived in this way and the screened one-gluon-exchange potential with $T$-dependent Debye screening mass to calculate $J/ψ$, $Υ$ and $Ω_{bbb}$ binding energies and melting temperatures in the deconfined phase of the full 2-flavors QCD.

Dynamics of hadro-quarkonium system is formulated, based on the channel coupling of a light hadron (h) and heavy quarkonium (Q\bar{Q}) to intermediate open-flavor heavy-light mesons (Q\bar{q}, \bar{Q}q). The resulting effective interaction is defined by overlap integrals of meson wavefunctions and (hq\bar q) coupling, where h is pi, rho, omega, phi, without fitting parameters. Equations for hadro-quarkonium amplitudes and resonance positions are written explicitly, and numerically calculated for the special case of pi Upsilon(nS) (n=1,2,3). It is also shown, that the recently observed by Belle two peaks Z_b(10610) and Z_b(10650) are in agreement with the proposed theory. It is demonstrated, that theory predicts peaks at the BB*, B*B* thresholds in all available pi Upsilon(nS) channels. Analytic nature of these peaks is investigated, and shown to be due to a common multichannel resonance poles close to the BB*, B*B* thresholds. The general mechanism of these hadro-quarkonium resonances does not assume any molecular or four-quark (tetraquark) dynamics.

Heavy quark bound states above deconfinement

A comprehensive study of the color singlet heavy quark states above T_c is given, using the Field Correlator Method (FCM) for nonperturbative Q{\bar Q} potentials and the screened Coulomb potential with the T-dependent Debye radius. Using these potentials we calculate binding energies and melting temperatures of heavy mesons and baryons in the deconfined phase of quark-gluon plasma and the J/ψand Upsilon disintegration cross sections via the gluon absorption.

Pattern of fermion masses from high-scale evolution

Dynamical equations for fermion masses are derived using high scale universal mass generation and consequent mass evolution due to $SU(3), SU(2)$, and U(1$ gauge interaction. Assuming mass generation at the GUT scale $M=10^{14}$ GeV, one obtains hierarchy and a large spread in fermion masses with roughly correct values of $m_ν, m_τ, m_t, m_b$ in the third generation. The smallness of neutrino mass, $ν_3\sim 10^{-12} m_{t}$, naturally arises in the solution.

Relativistic theory of string breaking in QCD

The QCD string breaking due to quark pair creation in the vacuum confining field, possibly accompanied by vector, scalar or Nambu-Goldstone bosons, is studied nonperturbatively. The scalar light pair creation vertex occurs due to chiral symmetry breaking and has a confining form, which is computed explicitly together with subleading vector contributions. Dependence on light quark mass and flavor is specifically studied. The dominant scalar term is in good agreement with the $^3P_0$ model and experimental data.

Theory of time-like baryon form factors near thresholds

A new mechanism of baryon-antibaryon production via nonperturbative double pair creation in intermediate mesons is proposed and the theory contains no fitting parameters. It is shown, that near-threshold resonances are responsible for enhancements in electroproduction cross sections: $ψ(4S)$ for $Λ^+_c Λ^-_c, Υ(6S)$ for $Λ_b \bar Λ_b$. An admixture of intermediate $D$- wave resonances produces angular dependence in differential cross section and can explain unusual behavior of the ratio $G_E/G_M$ for the proton.

Asymptotic freedom and IR freezing in QCD: the role of gluon paramagnetism

Paramagnetism of gluons is shown to play the basic role in establishing main properties of QCD: IR freezing and asymptotic freedom (AF). Starting with Polyakov background field approach the first terms of background perturbation theory are calculated and shown to ensure not only the classical result of AF but also IR freezing. For the latter only the confining property of the background is needed, and the effective mass entering the IR freezing logarithms is calculated in good agreement with phenomenology and lattice data.

Channel coupling in heavy quarkonia: energy levels, mixing, widths and new states

The mechanism of channel coupling via decay products is used to study energy shifts, level mixing as well as the possibility of new near-threshold resonances in $c\bar c, b\bar b$ systems. The Weinberg eigenvalue method is formulated in the multichannel problems, which allows to describe coupled-channel resonances and wave functions in a unitary way, and to predict new states due to channel coupling. Realistic wave functions for all single-channel states and decay matrix elements computed earlier are exploited, and no new fitting parameters are involved. Examples of level shifts, widths and mixings are presented; the dynamical origin of X(3872) and the destiny of the single-channel $2^3P_1(c\bar c)$ state are clarified. As a result a sharp and narrow peak in the state with quantum numbers $J^{PC}=1^{++}$ is found at 3.872 GeV, while the single-channel resonance originally around 3.940 GeV, becomes increasingly broad and disappears with growing coupling to open channels.

Dynamical origin and the pole structure of X(3872)

The dynamical mechanism of channel coupling with the decay channels is applied to the case of coupled charmonium - $DD^*$ states with $J^{PC}=1^{++}$. A pole analysis is done and the $DD^*$ production cross section is calculated in qualitative agreement with experiment. The sharp peak at the $D_0D^*_0$ threshold and flat background are shown to be due to Breit-Wigner resonance, shifted by channel coupling from the original position of 3954 MeV for the $2^3P_1$, $Q\bar Q$ state. A similar analysis, applied to the $n=2$, $^3P_2$, $^1P_1$, $^3P_0$, allows us to associate the first one with the observed $Z(3930)$ J=2 and explains the destiny of $^3P_0$.

Nuclear matter at high density: Phase transitions, multiquark states, and supernova outbursts

Phase transition from hadronic matter to quark-gluon matter is discussed for various regimes of temperature and baryon number density. For small and medium densities, the phase transition is accurately described in the framework of the Field Correlation Method, whereas at high density predictions are less certain and leave room for the phenomenological models. We study formation of multiquark states (MQS) at zero temperature and high density. Relevant MQS components of the nuclear matter can be described using a previously developed formalism of the quark compound bags (QCB). Partial-wave analysis of nucleon-nucleon scattering indicates the existence of 6QS which manifest themselves as poles of $P$-matrix. In the framework of the QCB model, we formulate a self-consistent system of coupled equations for the nucleon and 6QS propagators in nuclear matter and the G-matrix. The approach provides a link between high-density nuclear matter with the MQS components and the cumulative effect observed in reactions on the nuclei, which requires the admixture of MQS in the wave functions of nuclei kinematically. 6QS determine the natural scale of the density for a possible phase transition into the MQS phase of nuclear matter. Such a phase transition can lead to dynamic instability of newly born protoneutron stars and dramatically affect the dynamics of supernovae. Numerical simulations show that the phase transition may be a good remedy for the triggering supernova explosions in the spherically symmetric supernova models. A specific signature of the phase transition is an additional neutrino peak in the neutrino light curve. For a Galactic core-collapse supernova, such a peak could be resolved by the present neutrino detectors. The possibility of extracting the parameters of the phase of transition from observation of the neutrino signal is discussed also.

Spontaneous SU(2) symmetry violation in the $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R\times SU(4)$ electroweak model

A new approach to EW composite scalars is developed, starting from the fundamental gauge interaction on high scale. The latter is assumed to have the group structure $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R\times SU(4)$ where SU(4) is the Pati-Salam color-lepton group. The topological EW vacuum filled by instantons is explicitly constructed and the resulting equations for fermion masses exhibit spontaneous SU(2) flavor symmetry violation with possibility of very large mass ratios.

Confinement Mechanism in the Field Correlator Method

Confinement in QCD is caused by vacuum fluctuations of gluon fields. There are two numerically different scales, characterizing nonperturbative QCD vacuum dynamics: a "small" scale, corresponding to gluon condensate, critical temperature etc, which is about 0.2-0.3 GeV, and a "large" one, given by inverse confining string width, glueball and gluelump masses etc, which is about 1.5-2.5 GeV. We discuss this mismatch in a picture where confinement is ensured by two-point gauge-invariant field strength correlator of special type. It supports most of perturbative and nonperturbative dynamics, while contribution of other terms is argued to be small. This object, on the other hand, can be expressed via gluelump Green's function, whose dynamics is defined in terms of the same correlator. In this way one obtains a self-consistent scheme of mean-field type leading to permanent confinement at temperatures less than the critical one.

Deconfinement and quark-gluon plasma

The theory of confinement and deconfinement is discussed as based on the properties of the QCD vacuum. The latter are described by field correlators of colour-electric and colour-magnetic fields in the vacuum, which can be calculated analytically and on the lattice. As a result one obtains a self-consistent theory of the confined region in the (mu,T) plane with realistic hadron properties. At the boundary of the confining region, the colour-electric confining correlator vanishes, and the remaining correlators describe strong nonperturbative dynamics in the deconfined region with (weakly) bound states. Resulting equation of state for mu=0, p(T), (epsilon-3P)/T are in good agreement with lattice data. Phase transition occurs due to evaporation of a part of the colour-electric gluon condensate, and the resulting critical temperatures T_c(mu) for different n_f are in good correspondence with available data.

Diquark and triquark correlations in the deconfined phase of QCD

We use the non-perturbative Q\bar Q potential at finite temperatures derived in the Field Correlator Method to obtain binding energies for the lowest eigenstates in the Q\bar Q and QQQ systems (Q=c,b). The three--quark problem is solved by the hyperspherical method. The solution provides an estimate of the melting temperature and the radii for the different diquark and triquark bound states. In particular we find that J/ψand $ccc$ ground states survive up to T \sim 1.3 T_c, where T_c is the critical temperature, while the corresponding bottomonium states survive even up to higher temperature, T \sim 2.2 T_c.

On dynamics of fermion generations

The hierarchy of fermion masses and EW symmetry breaking without elementary Higgs is studied on the basis of strong gauge field distributions governing the EW dynamics. The mechanism of symmetry breaking due to quark bilinears condensation is generalized to the case, when higher field correlators are present in the EW vacuum. Resulting wave functional yields several minima of quark bilinears, giving masses of three (or more) generations. Mixing is suggested to be due to kink solutions of the same wave functional. For a special form of this mixing ("coherent mixing") a realistic hierarhy of masses and of CKM coefficients is obtained and arguments in favor of the fourth generation are given. Possible important role of topological charges for CP violating phases and small masses of the first generation is stressed.

Nonperturbative equation of state of quark-gluon plasma

The paper is devoted to the systematic derivation of nonperturbative thermodynamics of quark-gluon plasma, on the basis of the background perturbation theory. Vacuum background fields enter only in the form of field correlators, which are known from lattice and analytic calculations. In the lowest order in $α_s$ the purely nonperturbative $sQGP$ thermodynamics is expressed through single quark and gluon lines (single line approximation) which are interacting nonperturbatively with vacuum fields and with other lines. Nonperturbative EOS is obtained in terms (of the absolute value) of fundamental (adjoint) Polyakov loop $L_{fund(adj)}$ and spatial string tension $σ_s(T)$. In the lowest approximation the pressure for quarks (gluons) has a simple factorized form $P_{q(g)}= P_{SB} L_{fund(adj)} ,$ where $ L_i$ describe the action of vacuum colorelectric fields on particle trajectory.

New nonperturbative approach to the Debye mass in hot QCD

The Debye mass m_D is computed nonperturbatively in the deconfined phase of QCD, where chromomagnetic confinement is known to be present. The latter defines m_D to be m_D=c_D\sqrt{σ_s}, where c_D \cong 2.06 and σ_s=σ_s(T) is the spatial string tension. The resulting magnitude of m_D(T) and temperature dependence are in good agreement with lattice calculations. Background perturbation theory expansion for m_D(T) is discussed in comparison to standard perturbative results and recent gauge-invariant definitions.

Regge Behavior of DIS Structure Functions

Building on previous works of the mid 1960's, we construct an integral equation for forward elastic scattering (t=0) at arbitrary virtuality Q^2 and large s=W^2. This equation sums the ladder production of massless intermediate bosons to all orders, and the solution exhibits Regge behavior. The equation is used to study scattering in a simple chi^2 phi scalar theory, where it is solved appoximately and applied to the study of DIS at small x. We find that the model can naturally describe the quark distribution in both the large x region and the small x region dominated by Reggeon exchange.

The matrix Hamiltonian for hadrons and the role of negative-energy components

The world-line (Fock-Feynman-Schwinger) representation is used for quarks in arbitrary (vacuum and valence gluon) field to construct the relativistic Hamiltonian. After averaging the Green's function of the white $q\bar q$ system over gluon fields one obtains the relativistic Hamiltonian, which is matrix in spin indices and contains both positive and negative quark energies. The role of the latter is studied in the example of the heavy-light meson and the standard einbein technic is extended to the case of the matrix Hamiltonian. Comparison with the Dirac equation shows a good agreement of the results. For arbitrary $q\bar q $ system the nondiagonal matrix Hamiltonian components are calculated through hyperfine interaction terms. A general discussion of the role of negative energy components is given in conclusion.

Nonperturbative quark dynamics in a baryon

Field-correlator method is used to calculate nonperturbative dynamics of quarks in a baryon. General expression for the 3q Green's function is obtained using Fock-Feynman-Schwinger (world-line) path integral formalism, where all dynamics is contained in the 3q Wilson loop with spin-field insertions. Using lowest cumulant contribution for Wilson loop one obtains an Y-shaped string with a deep hole at the string junction position. Using einbein formalism for the quark kinetic terms one automatically obtains constituent quark masses, calculable through the string tension. Resulting effective action for 3q plus Y-shaped strings is quantized in the path-integral formalism to produce two versions of Hamiltonian,one -in the c.m. and another in the light-cone system. Hyperspherical formalism is used to calculate masses and wave functions. Simple estimates in lowest approximation yield baryon masses in good agreement with experiment without fitting parameters.

Chiral Lagrangian with confinement from the QCD Lagrangian

An effective Lagrangian for the light quark in the field of a static source is derived systematically using the exact field correlator expansion. The lowest Gaussian term is bosonized using nonlocal colorless bosonic fields and a general structure of effective chiral Lagrangian is obtained containing all set of fields. The new and crucial result is that the condensation of scalar isoscalar field which is a usual onset of chiral symmetry breaking and is constant in space-time, assumes here the form of the confining string and contributes to the confining potential, while the rest bosonic fields describe mesons with the q\bar q quark structure and pseudoscalars play the role of Nambu-Goldstone fields. Using derivative expansion the effective chiral Lagrangian is deduced containing both confinement and chiral effects for heavy-light mesons. The pseudovector quark coupling constant is computed to be exactly unity in the local limit,in agreement with earlier large N_c arguments.

Light meson radial Regge trajectories

A new physical mechanism is suggested to explain the universal depletion of high meson excitations. It takes into account the appearance of holes inside the string world sheet due to $q\bar{q}$ pair creation when the length of the string exceeds the critical value $R_1 \simeq 1.4$ fm. It is argued that a delicate balance between large $N_c$ loop suppression and a favorable gain in the action, produced by holes, creates a new metastable (predecay) stage with a renormalized string tension which now depends on the separation r. This results in smaller values of the slope of the radial Regge trajectories, in good agreement with the analysis of experimental data in [Ref.3]

Spin-dependent forces of quarks in baryon

Nonperturbative spin-dependent forces of quarks in a baryon are calculated directly from the QCD Lagrangian in the framework of the Field Correlator Method both for heavy and light quarks. Resulting forces contain terms of 5 different structures, only one being known before in asymptotic form. Perturbative terms obtained by the same method are standard and have different signs and structures with respect to the corresponding nonperturbative ones, implying possible cancellations for some baryonic states.

The Feynman-Schwinger (world-line) representation in perturbative QCD

The proper time path integral representation is derived explicitly for an arbitrary $n$-point amplitude in QCD. In the standard perturbation theory the formalism allows to sum up the leading subseries, e.g. yielding double-logarithm Sudakov asymptotics for form factors. Correspondence with the standard perturbation theory is established and connection to the Bern-Kosower-Strassler method is illustrated.

The Feynman-Schwinger representation in QCD

The proper time path integral representation is derived explicitly for Green's functions in QCD. After an introductory analysis of perturbative properties, the total gluonic field is separated in a rigorous way into a nonperturbative background and valence gluon part. For nonperturbative contributions the background perturbation theory is used systematically, yielding two types of expansions,illustrated by direct physical applications. As an application, we discuss the collinear singularities in the Feynman-Schwinger representation formalism. Moreover, the generalization to nonzero temperature is made and expressions for partition functions in perturbation theory and nonperturbative background are explicitly written down.

Triangular and Y-shaped hadrons in QCD

Gauge invariant extended configurations are considered for the three fundamental (quarks) or adjoint (gluons) particles. For quarks it is shown that the Y-shaped configuration is the only possible. For adjoint sources both the Y-shaped and triangular configurations may realize. The corresponding static potentials are calculated in the Method of Field Correlators and in the case of baryon shown to be consistent with the lattice simulations. For adjoint sources the potentials of Y-shaped and Delta-shaped configurations turn out to be close to each other, which leads to almost degenerate masses of 3-- 3g glueballs and odderon trajectories.

Mixing of meson, hybrid, and glueball states

The effective QCD Hamiltonian is constructed with the help of the background perturbation theory, and relativistic Feynman--Schwinger path integrals for Green's functions. The resulting spectrum displays mass gaps of the order of one GeV, when additional valence gluon is added to the bound state. Mixing between meson, hybrid, and glueball states is defined in two ways: through generalized Green's functions and via modified Feynman diagram technic giving similar answers. Results for mixing matrix elements are numerically not large (around 0.1 GeV) and agree with earlier analytic estimates and lattice simulations.

Gluelump spectrum in the QCD string model

Spectrum of gluons in the adjoint source field is computed analytically using the QCD string Hamiltonian, containing only one parameter - string tension, fixed by meson and glueball spectrum. Spin splitting is shown to be small. A good agreement is observed with spatially generated gluelump states measured on the lattice. Important role of gluelumps defining the behaviour of field-strength correlators is stressed and correspondence with earlier computations of the latter is established.

Glueball spectrum and the Pomeron in the Wilson loop approach

Using a nonperturbative method based on asymptotic behaviour of Wilson loops we calculate masses of glueballs and corresponding Regge-trajectories. The only input is string tension fixed by meson Regge slope, while perturbative contributions to spin splittings are defined by standard alpha_s values. The masses of lowest glueball states are in a perfect agreement with lattice results. The leading glueball trajectory which is associated with Pomeron is discussed in details and its mixing with f and f' trajectories is taken into account.

The Confinement

Numerous aspects and mechanisms of color confinement in QCD are surveyed. After a gauge-invariant definition of order parameters, the phenomenon is formulated in the language of field correlators, to select a particular correlator responsible for confinement. In terms of effective Lagrangians confinement is viewed upon as a dual Meissner effect and a quantitative correspondence is established via the popular abelian projection method, which is explained in detail. To determine the field configurations possibly responsible for confinement, the search is made among the classical solutions, and selection criterium is introduced.

The Light-Cone nonperturbative dynamics of meson wave functions

The light-cone Hamiltonian, incorporating the nonperturbative dynamics of the $q\bar q$ system connected by the string is solved numerically. The spectrum is shown to coincide with that of the center-of-mass Hamiltonian within the accuracy of computation, displaying the expected degeneracies of the string states, but an overall shift due to different treatment of Z-graphs is obtained. The nonperturbative wave functions are calculated directly from the light-cone Hamiltonian for the first time, thus allowing the explicit estimation of nonperturbative effects in the parton model language. In this way one obtains the string contribution to the parton distributions and in the formfactors and structure functions.

Curvature expansion for the background-induced gluodynamics string

Using cumulant expansion for an averaged Wilson loop we derive an action of the gluodynamics string in the form of a series in powers of the correlation length of the vacuum. In the lowest orders it contains the Nambu-Goto term and the rigidity term with the coupling constants computed from the bilocal correlator of gluonic fields. Some higher derivative corrections are calculated.

Magnetic Confinement and Screening Masses

Confined and deconfined phases are defined through nonperturbative correlators and nonperturbative background perturbation theory is used to compute the critical temperature $T_c$ and spatial string tension. Taking evolution along one of the spatial axes the set of Hamiltonians $H(n_1,n_2)$ with different Matsubara frequencies is obtained. Meson and glueball screening masses and wave functions are computed for $H(0,0)$ and compared with available lattice data.

The QCD String with Quarks. II. Light Cone Hamiltonian

The light-cone Hamiltonian is derived from the general gauge -- and Lorentz -- invariant expression for the $q\bar{q}$ Green's function, containing confinement via the area law for the Wilson loop.The resulting Hamiltonian contains in a nonadditive way contributions from quark and string degrees of freedom. Different limiting dynamical regimes of the system of quarks connected by the string are found. In the limit of no transverse motion one recovers the t'Hooft's 1+1 QCD Hamiltonian. The correspondence with the rest frame Hamiltonian spectrum is established. The important notion of the light-cone string, contributing significantly to the energy--momentum is discussed.
