Phase manipulation of terahertz waves by work function engineering in metal-graphite structures

We manipulate the transient terahertz (THz) waves emitted from metal-graphite interfaces, where potential barriers were formed because of work function differences. To adaptively control the phase of the THz waves, two distinct groups of metals were evaporated on n-type doped highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG): group A, which consisted of Pt, Au, and Ag with work functions larger than that of HOPG and group B, which consisted of Al and Ti with work functions smaller than that of HOPG. The phase of the transient THz lineshapes from group A was opposite to that of group B under infrared laser excitation, which is indicative of opposite band bending and concomitant interfacial doping for ambipolar transport at the metal-graphite junctions. The amplitude of the THz waves could be further substantiated by the work function differences and modified minority carrier mobilities at the depletion regions.

Temperature Dependent Mean Free Path Spectra of Thermal Phonons Along the c-axis of Graphite

Heat conduction in graphite has been studied for decades because of its exceptionally large thermal anisotropy. While the bulk thermal conductivities along the in-plane and cross-plane directions are well known, less understood are the microscopic properties of the thermal phonons responsible for heat conduction. In particular, recent experimental and computational works indicate that the average phonon mean free path (MFP) along the c-axis is considerably larger than that estimated by kinetic theory, but the distribution of MFPs remains unknown. Here, we report the first quantitative measurements of c-axis phonon MFP spectra in graphite at a variety of temperatures using time-domain thermoreflectance measurements of graphite flakes with variable thickness. Our results indicate that c-axis phonon MFPs have values of a few hundred nanometers at room temperature and a much narrower distribution than in isotropic crystals. At low temperatures, phonon scattering is dominated by grain boundaries separating crystalline regions of different rotational orientation. Our study provides important new insights into heat transport and phonon scattering mechanisms in graphite and other anisotropic van der Waals solids.

Directional terahertz emission from diffusion-engineered InAs structures

We have designed and fabricated a new type of terahertz (THz) emitter that radiates THz waves along the surface-normal direction because of the lateral distributions of the transient electric dipoles. The excitation and measurements were performed using a conventional THz time-domain spectroscopy scheme with femtosecond optical pulses. The corrugated mirror patterns on the InAs layers made the radiation directional along the surface-normal direction, and the emission efficiency was controlled by adjustment of the pattern width.

Nexus between directionality of THz waves and structural parameters in groove-patterned InAs

We have performed terahertz (THz)-time domain spectroscopy in various geometries, for characterizing the directivity of THz waves emitted from groove-patterned InAs structures. First, we have distinguished the THz emission mechanisms as a function of epilayer thickness. The carrier drift was predominant in thin sample group (10-70 nm) which the electronic diffusion motion was overriding the oppositely aligned drifting dipoles in thick sample group (370-900 nm) as revealed via amplitude and phase variations. By combined use of the electron-beam lithography and the inductively coupled plasma etching in 1 μm-thick InAs epilayers, we have further fabricated either asymmetric V-groove patterns or symmetric parabolic patterns. The THz amplitude was enhanced, particularly along line-of-sight transmissive direction when the groove patterns act as microscale reflective mirrors periodically separated by a scale of diffusion length.
