Anharmonic lattice dynamics study of phonon transport in layered and molecular-crystal indium iodides

Indium iodides, which adopt layered or molecular-crystal-like arrangements depending on composition, are expected to exhibit low lattice thermal conductivity because of their heavy constituent atoms and weak In-I bonding. In this work, we employed first-principles anharmonic lattice dynamics calculations to systematically investigate phonon transport in indium iodides from particle- and wave-like perspectives. The calculated lattice thermal conductivities of both materials remained below 1 W/m-K over a broad temperature range. Notably, the influence of wave-like phonon transport differed by composition: in InI3, the wave-like contribution became comparable to the particle-like Peierls contribution, whereas it remained negligible in InI. We also investigated the thermal transport properties of the experimentally reported high-pressure phase of InI3. Motivated by experimental indications of stacking faults and partial disorder in indium site occupancy within the rhombohedral phase, we constructed several ordered structural models with different stacking sequences. These stacking sequences exhibited no significant energetic preference and had similar lattice thermal conductivities, suggesting that in-plane thermal transport is largely governed by the vibrational properties of the In2I6 layers themselves rather than by the specific stacking sequence. These findings provide insight into phonon transport in layered and molecular-crystal systems with structural complexity and contribute to a broader understanding of thermal transport mechanisms in layered and molecular-crystal-like materials.

Time-Temperature-Transformation (TTT) Diagrams to rationalize the nucleation and quenchability of metastable $α$-Li$_3$PS$_4$

$α$-Li$_3$PS$_4$ is a promising solid-state electrolyte with the highest ionic conductivity among its polymorphs. However, its formation presents a thermodynamic paradox: the $α$-phase is the equilibrium phase at high temperature and transforms to the stable $γ$-Li$_3$PS$_4$ polymorph when cooled to room temperature; however, $α$-Li$_3$PS$_4$ can be synthesized and quenched in a metastable state via rapid heating at relatively low temperatures. The origin of this synthesizability and anomalous stability has remained elusive. Here, we resolve this paradox by establishing a comprehensive time-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagram, constructed from a computational temperature-size phase diagram and experimental high-time-resolution isothermal measurements. Our density functional theory calculations reveal that at the nanoscale, the $α$-phase is stabilized by its low surface energy, which drastically lowers the nucleation barrier across a wide temperature range. This size-dependent stabilization is directly visualized using in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy, capturing the rapid nucleation of nano-sized $α$-phase and its subsequent slow transformation. This work presents a generalizable framework that integrates thermodynamic and kinetic factors for understanding nucleation and phase transformation mechanisms, providing a rational strategy for the targeted synthesis of functional metastable materials.

Extremely high upper critical field in BiCh$_2$-based (Ch: S and Se) layered superconductor LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$ ($x$ = 0.22 and 0.69)

Centrosymmetric compounds with local inversion symmetry breaking have tremendously interesting and intriguing physical properties. In this study, we focus on a BiCh$_2$-based (Ch: S, Se) layered superconductor, as a system with local inversion asymmetry, because spin polarisation based on the Rashba-Dresselhaus-type spin-orbit coupling has been observed in centrosymmetric BiCh$_2$-based LaOBiS$_2$ systems, while the BiCh$_2$ layer lacks local inversion symmetry. Herein, we report the existence of extremely high in-plane upper critical fields in the BiCh$_2$-based system LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$ ($x$ = 0.22 and 0.69). The superconducting states are not completely suppressed by the applied magnetic fields with strengths up to 55 T. Thus, we consider that the in-plane upper critical field is enhanced by the local inversion symmetry breaking and its layered structure. Our study will open a new pathway for the discovery of superconductors that exhibit a high upper critical field by focusing on the local inversion symmetry breaking.

Synthesis of new high-entropy alloy-type Nb3 (Al, Sn, Ge, Ga, Si) superconductors

Studies on high-entropy alloy (HEA) superconductors have recently been increasing, particularly in the fields of materials science and condensed matter physics. To contribute to research on new HEA-type superconductors, in our study we synthesized polycrystalline samples of A15-type superconductors of Nb3Al0.2Sn0.2Ge0.2Ga0.2Si0.2 (#1) and Nb3Al0.3Sn0.3Ge0.2Ga0.1Si0.1 (#2) with an HEA-type site by arc melting. Elemental and structural analyses revealed that the compositions of the obtained samples satisfied the HEA state criteria. Superconducting transitions were observed at 9.0 and 11.0 K for #1 and #2, respectively, in the temperature dependence of magnetization and electrical resistivity. Specific heat measurements revealed that the Sommerfeld coefficient, Debye temperature, and ΔC/γTc for the obtained samples were close to those reported for conventional Nb3Sn family superconductors.

Bulk superconductivity induced by Se substitution in self-doped BiCh2-based compound CeOBiS2-xSex

We report the Se substitution effects on the crystal structure, superconducting properties, and valence states of self-doped BiCh2-based compound CeOBiS2-xSex. Polycrystalline CeOBiS2-xSex samples with x = 0-1.0 were synthesized. For x = 0.4 and 0.6, bulk superconducting transitions with a large shielding volume fraction were observed in magnetic susceptibility measurements; the highest transition temperature (Tc) was 3.0 K for x = 0.6. A superconductivity phase diagram of CeOBiS2-xSex was established based on Tc estimated from the electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements. The emergence of superconductivity in CeOBiS2-xSex was explained with two essential parameters of in-plane chemical pressure and carrier concentration, which systematically changed with increasing Se concentration.

Crystal Structure and Thermoelectric Transport Properties of As-Doped Layered Pnictogen Oxyselenides NdO0.8F0.2Sb1-xAsxSe2

We report the synthesis and thermoelectric transport properties of As-doped layered pnictogen oxyselenides NdO0.8F0.2Sb1-xAsxSe2 (x < 0.7), which are predicted to show high-performance thermoelectric properties based on first-principles calculation. The crystal structure of these compounds belongs to the tetragonal P4/nmm space group (No. 129) at room temperature. The lattice parameter c decreases with increasing x, while a remains almost unchanged among the samples. Despite isovalent substitution of As for Sb, electrical resistivity significantly rises with increasing x. Very low thermal conductivity of less than 0.8 W/mK is observed at temperatures between 300 and 673 K for all the examined samples. For As-doped samples, the thermal conductivity further decreases above 600 K. Temperature-dependent synchrotron X-ray diffraction indicates that an anomaly also occurs in the c-axis length at around 600 K, which may relate to the thermal transport properties.

Evolution of two bulk-superconducting phases in Sr0.5RE0.5FBiS2 (RE: La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm) by external hydrostatic pressure effect

Polycrystalline samples of Sr1-xRExFBiS2 (RE: La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) were synthesized via the solid-state reaction and characterized using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Although all the Sr0.5RE0.5FBiS2 samples exhibited superconductivity at transition temperatures (Tc) within the range of 2.1-2.7 K under ambient pressure, the estimated superconducting volume fraction was small. This indicated the non-bulk nature of superconductivity in these samples under ambient pressure. A dramatic evolution of the bulk superconducting phases was achieved on applying an external hydrostatic pressure. Near pressures below 1 GPa, bulk superconductivity was induced with a Tc of 2.5-2.8 K, which is termed as the low-P phase. Moreover, the high-P phase (Tc = 10.0-10.8 K) featuring bulk characteristics was observed at higher pressures. Pressure-Tc phase diagrams indicated that the critical pressure for the emergence of the high-P phase tends to increase with decreasing ionic radius of the doped RE ions. According to the high-pressure X-ray diffraction measurements of Sr0.5La0.5FBiS2, a structural phase transition from tetragonal to monoclinic also occurred at approximately 1.1 GPa. Thus, this phase transition indicates a pressure-induced superconducting-superconducting transition similar to the transition in LaO0.5F0.5BiS2. Bulk superconducting phases in Sr0.5RE0.5FBiS2 induced by the external hydrostatic pressure effect are expected to be useful for evaluating the mechanisms of superconductivity in BiCh2-based superconductors.

Investigation of in-plane anisotropy of c-axis magnetoresistance for BiCh2-based layered superconductor NdO0.7F0.3BiS2

We have investigated the in-plane anisotropy of the c-axis magnetoresistance (MR) in both superconducting and normal states of single crystals of NdO0.7F0.3BiS2 under in-plane magnetic fields. In the superconducting states of NdO0.7F0.3BiS2, four-fold-symmetric in-plane anisotropy of the c-axis MR was observed below the superconducting transition temperature. Since the crystal structure of NdO0.7F0.3BiS2 is tetragonal, the rotational symmetry in the superconducting state is preserved in the present compound. This result is clearly different from the previous report observed in LaO0.5F0.5BiSSe single crystals, where the in-plane MR in the superconducting state shows two-fold symmetry. On the other hand, in the normal states of NdO0.7F0.3BiS2, two-fold symmetric MR with a small amplitude was observed. The possible origin of the two-fold-symmetric behavior was discussed with the presence of local structural disorder in the conducting plane of BiCh2-based compounds.

Investigation of superconducting properties and possible nematic superconductivity in self-doped BiCh2-based superconductor CeOBiS1.7Se0.3

We investigate the superconducting properties and possible nematic superconductivity of self-doped BiCh2-based (Ch: S, Se) superconductor CeOBiS1.7Se0.3 through the measurements of in-plane anisotropy of magnetoresistance. Single crystals of CeOBiS1.7Se0.3 were grown using a flux method. Single-crystal structural analysis revealed that the crystal structure at room temperature is tetragonal (P4/nmm). Bulk superconductivity with a transition temperature of 3.3 K was observed through electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements. Investigation of anisotropy of upper critical field suggested relatively low anisotropy in the crystal as compared to other BiCh2-based superconductors. In the superconducting states of CeOBiS1.7Se0.3, two-fold symmetric in-plane anisotropy of magnetoresistance was observed, which indicates the in-plane rotational symmetry breaking in the tetragonal structure and hence the possibility of nematic superconductivity in CeOBiS1.7Se0.3.

Possible pairing mechanism switching driven by structural symmetry breaking in BiS2-based layered superconductors

Investigation of isotope effects on superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is one of the useful methods to examine whether electron-phonon interaction is essential for pairing mechanisms. The layered BiCh2-based (Ch: S, Se) superconductor family is a candidate for unconventional superconductors, because unconventional isotope effects have previously been observed in La(O,F)BiSSe and Bi4O4S3. In this study, we investigated the isotope effects of 32S and 34S in the high-pressure phase of (Sr,La)FBiS2, which has a monoclinic crystal structure and a higher Tc of 10 K under high pressures, and observed conventional-type isotope shifts in Tc. The conventional-type isotope effects in the monoclinic phase of (Sr,La)FBiS2 are different from the unconventional isotope effects observed in La(O,F)BiSSe and Bi4O4S3, which have a tetragonal structure. The obtained results suggest that the pairing mechanisms of BiCh2-based superconductors could be switched by a structural-symmetry change in the superconducting layers induced by pressure effects.

Structural phase diagram of LaO1-xFxBiSSe: suppression of the structural phase transition by partial F substitutions

We have investigated low-temperature crystal structure of BiCh2-based compounds LaO1-xFxBiSSe (x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, and 0.5), in which anomalous two-fold-symmetric in-plane anisotropy of superconducting states has been observed for x = 0.5. From synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments, a structural transition from tetragonal to monoclinic was observed for x = 0 and 0.01 at 340 and 240 K, respectively. For x = 0.03, a structural transition and broadening of the diffraction peak were not observed down to 100 K. These facts suggest that the structural transition could be suppressed by 3% F substitution in LaO1-xFxBiSSe. Furthermore, the crystal structure for x = 0.5 at 4 K was examined by low-temperature (laboratory) X-ray diffraction, which confirmed that the tetragonal structure is maintained at 4 K for x = 0.5. Our results suggest that the two-fold-symmetric in-plane anisotropy of superconducting states observed for LaO0.5F0.5BiSSe was not originated from structural symmetry lowering.

Superconducting properties of high-entropy-alloy tellurides M-Te (M: Ag, In, Cd, Sn, Sb, Pb, Bi) with a NaCl-type structure

High-entropy-alloy-type tellurides M-Te, which contain five different metals of M = Ag, In, Cd, Sn, Sb, Pb, and Bi, were synthesized using high pressure synthesis. Structural characterization revealed that all the obtained samples have a cubic NaCl-type structure. Six samples, namely AgCdSnSbPbTe5, AgInSnSbPbTe5, AgCdInSnSbTe5, AgCdSnPbBiTe5, AgCdInPbBiTe5, and AgCdInSnBiTe5 showed superconductivity. The highest transition temperature (Tc) among those samples was 1.4 K for AgInSnSbPbTe5. A sample of AgCdInSbPbTe5 showed a semiconductor-like transport behavior. From the relationship between Tc and lattice constant, it was found that a higher Tc is observed for a telluride with a larger lattice constant.

Superconductivity in CuAl2-type Co0.2Ni0.1Cu0.1Rh0.3Ir0.3Zr2 with a high-entropy-alloy transition metal site

Research on high-entropy-alloy (HEA) superconductors is a growing field in material science. In this study, we explored new HEA-type superconductors and discovered a CuAl2-type superconductor Co0.2Ni0.1Cu0.1Rh0.3Ir0.3Zr2 with a HEA-type transition metal site. A superconducting transition was observed at 8.0 K after electrical resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat measurements. The bulk characteristics of the superconductivity were confirmed through the specific heat measurements. The discovery of superconductivity in HEA-type Co0.2Ni0.1Cu0.1Rh0.3Ir0.3Zr2 will provide a novel pathway to explore new HEA-type superconductors and investigate the relationship between the mixing entropy and superconductivity of HEA-type compounds.

Synthesis of RE123 high-Tc superconductors with a high-entropy-alloy-type RE site

We have synthesized high-entropy-alloy-type (HEA-type) RE123 superconductors Y0.28Nd0.16Sm0.18Eu0.18Gd0.20Ba2Cu3O7-d and Y0.18La0.24Nd0.14Sm0.14Eu0.15Gd0.15Ba2Cu3O7-d with a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) exceeding 90 K. From comparison between HEA-type and conventional RE123 samples, we found that the mixing entropy at the rare earth site does not affect Tc and critical current density (Jc) of the RE123 samples. For all the examined samples, orthorhombicity was found to be an essential parameter for Tc and Jc. In the regime near orthorhombic-tetragonal boundary, Jc for the HEA-type sample was larger than that of conventional-type samples, which suggests that HEA-type RE123 may be useful to improve Jc in the structure with low orthorhombicity.

Two-fold symmetry of in-plane magnetoresistance anisotropy in the superconducting states of BiCh2-based LaO0.9F0.1BiSSe single crystal

Recently, two-fold symmetric in-plane anisotropy of the superconducting properties have been observed in a single crystal of BiCh2-based (Ch: S, Se) layered superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiSSe having a tetragonal (four-fold-symmetric) in-plane structure; the phenomena are very similar to those observed in nematic superconductors. To explore the origin of the two-fold symmetric anisotropy in the BiCh2-based system, we have investigated the electron-doping dependence on the anisotropy by examining the in-plane anisotropy of the magnetoresistance in the superconducting states for a single crystal of LaO0.9F0.1BiSSe under high magnetic fields up to 15 T. We observed a two-fold symmetry of in-plane anisotropy of magnetoresistance for LaO0.9F0.1BiSSe. The results obtained for LaO0.9F0.1BiSSe are quite similar to those observed for LaO0.5F0.5BiSSe, which has a higher electron doping concentration than LaO0.9F0.1BiSSe. Our present finding suggests that the emergence of the in-plane symmetry breaking in the superconducting state is robust to the carrier concentration in the series of LaO1-xFxBiSSe.

Unconventional isotope effect on transition temperature in BiS2-based superconductor Bi4O4S3

We report the sulfur isotope effect on transition temperature in a BiS2-based superconductor Bi4O4S3. Polycrystalline samples of Bi4O4S3 were prepared using 32S and 34S isotope chemicals. From magnetization analyses, the isotope exponent (aS) was estimated as -0.1 < aS < 0.1. Although the Tc estimated from electrical resistivity was scattered as compared to those estimated from the magnetization, we observed no clear correlation between Tc and the isotope mass. The present results suggest that unconventional paring states are essential in Bi4O4S3.

Effect of Indium doping on the superconductivity of layered oxychalcogenide La2O2Bi3Ag1-xInxS6

We report on the substitution effect of Indium (In) at the Ag site of layered oxychalcogenide La2O2Bi3Ag1-xInxS6. The Tc decreases with increasing In concentration. A hump in the normal state resistivity at an anomaly temperature (T*) near 180 K was observed for all the samples. The anomaly in the resistivity at T* is indicating the possible occurrence of a charge-density-wave (CDW) transition. The T* does not markedly change by In doping. The x dependence of Seebeck coefficient suggests that carrier concentration does not change by In doping. The EDX analysis indicates small amount of Bi deficiency, which suggests that the Bi site is slightly substituted by In. The CDW transition is robust against the In substitution at Ag site, while Tc is decreasing due to the Bi site substitution by In. On the basis of those analyses, we propose that the suppression of superconductivity in the In-doped La2O2Bi3Ag1-xInxS6 system is caused by negative in-plane chemical pressure effect and partial substitution of In for the in-plane Bi site.

Improvement of superconducting properties by chemical pressure effect in Eu-doped La2-xEuxO2Bi3Ag0.6Sn0.4S6

We have investigated the substitution effect of Eu on the superconductivity in La2-xEuxO2Bi3Ag0.6Sn0.4S6. Recently, we reported an observation of superconductivity at 0.5 K in a layered oxychalcogenide La2O2Bi3AgS6. The Sn doping at the Ag site was found to raise the superconducting transition temperature, Tc to 2.5 K in La2O2Bi3Ag0.6Sn0.4S6. To further improve the superconducting properties, we have partially substituted Eu for the La site to increase the chemical pressure in La2-xEuxO2Bi3Ag0.6Sn0.4S6 (x = 0.1 to 0.6). With the increase in Eu concentration, x, the lattice constant a was found to shrink, while the lattice constant c was marginally shortened, which suggests that the chemical pressure induced by the Eu doping is uniaxial along the a-axis. Tc was observed to increase with increasing x up to x = 0.4, further decreasing for higher Eu concentrations of x = 0.5 and 0.6. From the magnetic susceptibility and resistivity measurements, the bulk nature of superconductivity has been observed for x = 0.1 to 0.5 with Tc = 2.5 to 4.0 K, respectively. The upper critical field (Bc2) was noted to be 3.5 T for x = 0.4, which also has the highest Tc.

Superconductivity in High-Entropy-Alloy Telluride AgInSnPbBiTe5

A polycrystalline sample of the high-entropy-alloy-type telluride AgInSnPbBiTe5 was synthesized using high-pressure synthesis. Superconductivity with a transition temperature (Tc) of 2.6 K was observed in AgInSnPbBiTe5. Elemental and structural analyses revealed that five metals are mixed in a metal site of an NaCl-type structure. Since AgInSnPbBiTe5 has a cation site (Ag, In, Sn, Pb, and Bi) and an anion site (Te), this is the first example of a high-entropy-alloy (HEA) pseudo-binary superconductor.

Superconductivity in Se-doped La2O2Bi2Pb2S6-xSex with a Bi2Pb2Ch4-type thick conducting layer

La2O2Bi2Pb2S6 is a layered Bi-based oxychalcogenide with a thick four-layer-type conducting layer. Although La2O2Bi2Pb2S6 is a structural analogue of La2O2Bi3AgS6, which is a superconductor, insulating behavior has been observed in La2O2Bi2Pb2S6 at low temperatures, and no superconductivity has been reported. Herein, we demonstrate superconductivity in La2O2Bi2Pb2S6-xSex via partial substitution of Se in the S sites. Owing to the Se doping, the normal state electrical resistivity of La2O2Bi2Pb2S6-xSex at low temperatures was dramatically suppressed, and superconductivity was observed at a transition temperature (Tc) of 1.15 K for x = 0.5. Tc increased with increasing Se concentration: Tc = 1.9 K for x = 1.0. The emergence of metallicity and superconductivity was explained via in-plane chemical pressure effects that can suppress local disorder and carrier localization, which are commonly observed in two-layer-type BiS2-based systems.

Bulk Superconductivity Induced by In-plane Chemical Pressure Effect in Eu0.5La0.5FBiS2-xSex

We have investigated Se substitution effect to superconductivity of an optimally-doped BiS2-based superconductor Eu0.5La0.5FBiS2. Eu0.5La0.5FBiS2-xSex samples with x = 0-1 were synthesized. With increasing x, in-plane chemical pressure is enhanced. For x = 0.6, 0.8, and 1, superconducting transitions with a large shielding volume fraction are observed in magnetic susceptibility measurements, and the highest Tc is 3.8 K for x = 0.8. From low-temperature electrical resistivity measurements, a zero-resistivity state is observed for all the samples, and the highest Tc is observed for x = 0.8. With increasing Se concentration, characteristics of electrical resistivity changes from semiconducting-like to metallic, suggesting that the emergence of bulk superconductivity is linked with the enhanced metallicity. A superconductivity phase diagram of the Eu0.5La0.5FBiS2-xSex superconductor is established. Temperature dependences of electrical resistivity show an anomalous two-step transition under high magnetic fields. Hence, the resistivity data are analyzed with assuming in-plane anisotropy of upper critical field.

Crystal structure instability of FeSe grains: Formation of non-superconducting phase at the grain surface

We investigated the magnetization and crystal structure of FeSe polycrystalline samples with various grain sizes. For the samples with large grains, a large magnetic critical current density Jc was observed. For the samples with small grains, superconductivity signals were not observed; instead, magnetization hysteresis, which is not a result of superconductivity, was observed. In the X-ray diffraction pattern for the samples with small grains, broad additional peaks were observed, corresponding to the formation of the non-superconducting (monoclinic) Fe-Se phase at the FeSe grain surface. The crystal structure instability at the grain surface would be the reason for the low superconducting properties of the Fe-chalcogenide polycrystalline wires investigated thus far.

High-Pressure Synthesis and Superconductivity of Ag-doped Topological Crystalline Insulator SnTe (Sn1-xAgxTe with x = 0-0.5)

We have synthesized the single-phase polycrystalline samples of Sn1-xAgxTe, Ag-doped topological crystalline insulator SnTe, with a range of x = 0-0.5 using a high-pressure synthesis method. The crystal structure of Sn1-xAgxTe at room temperature is a cubic NaCl-type structure, which does not vary upon Ag substitution. Bulk superconductivity with a transition temperature of 2.4 K was observed for x = 0.15-0.25, and the optimal Ag content was x = 0.2. The Sn1-xAgxTe superconducting phase will be useful for understanding the superconductivity nature and mechanisms of the carrier-doped SnTe system.

Specific Heat and Electrical Transport Properties of Sn0.8Ag0.2Te Superconductor

Sn0.8Ag0.2Te is a new superconductor with Tc ~ 2.4 K. The superconducting properties of Sn0.8Ag0.2Te have been investigated by specific heat measurements under magnetic fields. Bulk nature of superconductivity was confirmed from the amplitude of the specific heat jump at the superconducting transition, and the amplitude is consistent with fully-gapped superconductivity. Upper critical field was estimated from specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements under magnetic fields. The Hall coefficient was positive, suggesting that the Ag acts as a p-type dopant in Sn0.8Ag0.2Te.

Thermoelectric properties of new Bi-chalcogenide layered compounds

The layered Bi-chalcogenide compounds have been drawing much attention as a new layered superconductor family since 2012. Due to the rich variation of crystal structure and constituent elements, the development of new physics and chemistry of the layered Bi-chalcogenide family and its applications as functional materials have been expected. Recently, it was revealed that the layered Bi chalcogenides can show a relatively high thermoelectric performance (ZT = 0.36 in LaOBiSSe at ~650 K). Here, we show the crystal structure variation of the Bi-chalcogenide family and their thermoelectric properties. Finally, the possible strategies for enhancing the thermoelectric performance are discussed on the basis of the experimental and the theoretical facts reviewed here.

Chemical pressure effect on superconductivity of BiS2-based Ce1-xNdxO1-yFyBiS2 and Nd1-zSmzO1-yFyBiS2

We have systematically investigated the crystal structure and the magnetic properties of BiS2-based superconductor Ce1-xNdxO1-yFyBiS2 (x = 0 - 1.0, y = 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7) and Nd1-zSmzO1-yFyBiS2 (x = 0 - 0.8, y = 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7). In the REOBiS2 system, both crystal structure and physical properties are tunable by mixing the RE (RE = rare earth) site with Ce, Nd and Sm due to the difference of ionic radius of RE. In the Ce1-xNdxO1-yFyBiS2 system, bulk superconductivity is observed for x = 1.0 with y = 0.3 and x = 0.5 - 1.0 with y = 0.5. The transition temperature (Tc) increases with increasing Nd concentration. The highest Tc is 4.8 K for x = 1.0 with y = 0.5 in the Ce1-xNdxO1-yFyBiS2 system. By the Nd substitution for Ce, lattice contraction along the a axis is generated while the c axis does not show a remarkable dependence on Nd concentration. The lattice constant of c decreases with increasing F concentration. Furthermore, we found that the Nd site can be replaced by smaller Sm ions up to z = 0.8 in Nd1-zSmzO1-yFyBiS2. Bulk superconductivity is observed within z = 0 - 0.8 for y = 0.3 and z = 0 - 0.6 for y = 0.5. The Tc increases with increasing Sm concentration. The highest Tc is 5.6 K for z = 0.8 with y = 0.3. With increasing Sm concentration, the lattice constant of a decreases while the lattice constants of c does not show a remarkable dependence on Sm concentration. We found that the chemical pressure generated by systematic solution of the RE site in the blocking layer commonly induces lattice contraction along the a axis in Ce1-xNdxO1-yFyBiS2 and Nd1-zSmzO1-yFyBiS2. The obtained results indicate that both optimal F concentration and uniaxial lattice contraction along the a axis generated by chemical pressure are essential for the inducement of bulk superconductivity in the REO1-yFyBiS2 system.

Electronic Origins of Large Thermoelectric Power Factor of LaOBiS2-xSex

We examined the electrical transport properties of densified LaOBiS2-xSex, which constitutes a new family of thermoelectric materials. The power factor increased with increasing concentration of Se, i.e., Se substitution led to an enhanced electrical conductivity, without suppression of the Seebeck coefficient. Hall measurements indicated that the low electrical resistivity resulted from increases in the carrier mobility, and the decrease in carrier concentration led to large absolute values of the Seebeck coefficient of the system.

Evolution of superconductivity in BiS2-based superocnductor LaO0.5F0.5Bi(S1-xSex)2

We have systematically investigated the crystal structure, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity of the BiS2-based superconductor LaO0.5F0.5Bi(S1-xSex)2 (x = 0 - 0.7). With expanding lattice volume by Se substitution, bulk superconductivity was induced for x > 0.2, and the highest Tc of 3.8 K was observed in x = 0.5 (LaO0.5F0.5BiSSe). Metallic conductivity was observed for x > 0.3 in the resistivity measurement, whereas semiconducting-like behavior was observed for x < 0.2. The induction of bulk superconductivity by the partial substitution of S by Se in the LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor should be positively linked to the enhancement of metallic conductivity.

High thermoelectric performance and low thermal conductivity of densified LaOBiSSe

In this study, we examined the thermoelectric properties of the layered bismuth-chalcogenide-based (BiCh2-based) compound LaOBiSSe, which is expected to be a new candidate material for thermoelectric applications. Densified samples were obtained with a hot-press method. The results of the X-ray diffraction measurements showed that the samples obtained were weakly oriented. This affected the resistivity (r) and Seebeck coefficient (S) of the samples because they are dependent upon the orientation of the crystal structure. The values obtained for the power factor (S2/r) when measured perpendicular to the pressing direction (P1) were higher than that when measured parallel to the pressing direction (P2). The thermal conductivity (k) of the samples was also sensitive to the orientation. The values of k measured along P2 were lower than that measured along P1. The highest figure-of-merit (approximately 0.36) was obtained at around 650 K in both directions, i.e., P1 and P2.

In-plane Charge Fluctuations in Bismuth Sulfide Superconductors

Evidence for local charge fluctuations linked to a charge disproportionation of the Bi ions in the distorted lattice of superconducting LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ BiS$_{2}$ is presented. In-plane short-range distortions of sulfur atoms up to 0.3 Å in magnitude break site symmetry and create two distinct environments around Bi. Out-of-plane motion of apical sulfur brings it closer to the La-O/F doping layer with increasing $x$ that may lead to a charge transfer conduit between the doping layers and the superconducting BiS$_{2}$ planes. The mechanism for superconductivity may arise from the interplay between charge density fluctuations and an enhanced spin-orbit coupling suggested theoretically, that induces spin polarization.

In-plane chemical pressure essential for superconductivity in BiCh2-based (Ch: S, Se) layered structure

BiCh2-based superconductors (Ch: S, Se) are a new series of layered superconductor. However, mechanisms for the emergence of superconductivity in BiCh2-based superconductors have not been clarified. In this study, we have investigated crystal structure of two series of optimally-doped BiCh2-based superconductors, Ce1-xNdxO0.5F0.5BiS2 and LaO0.5F0.5Bi(S1-ySey)2, using powder synchrotron x-ray diffraction in order to reveal the relationship between crystal structure and superconducting properties of the BiCh2-based family. We have found that an enhancement of in-plane chemical pressure would commonly induce bulk superconductivity in both systems. Furthermore, we have revealed that superconducting transition temperature for REO0.5F0.5BiCh2 superconductors could universally be determined by degree of in-plane chemical pressure.

Pronounced - Log T Divergence in Specific Heat of Nonmetallic CeOBiS$_2$: A Mother Phase of BiS$_2$-Based Superconductor

The low-temperature properties of CeOBiS$_2$ single crystals are studied by electrical resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat measurements. Ce 4f -electrons are found to be in a well-localized state split by crystalline-electric-field (CEF) effects. The CEF ground state is a pure $J_z$ = $\pm$ 1/2 doublet, and excited doublets are located far above. At low temperatures in zero field, we observe pronounced $-\log T$ divergence in the specific heat, revealing the presence of quantum critical fluctuations of 4f magnetic moments near a quantum critical point (QCP). Considering that CeOBiS$_2$ is a nonmetal, this phenomenon cannot be attributed to the competition between Kondo and the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions as in numerous f-electron-based strongly correlated metals, indicating an unconventional mechanism. We suggest that CeOBiS$_2$ is the first material found to be located at a QCP among geometrically frustrated nonmetallic magnets.

Structures and Optical Absorption of Bi2OS2 and LaOBiS2

The band gaps of isostructural Bi2OS2 and LaOBiS2 were examined using optical absorption and discussed with the band structures calculated based on the crystal structures determined using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The Bi 6p and S 3p orbitals in the Bi-S plane were computationally predicted to constitute the bands near the Fermi level. The optical reflectance spectra of Bi2OS2 and LaOBiS2 showed optical band gaps of ca. 1.0 eV, which were close to the computationally calculated direct band gaps of ca. 0.8 eV. Our results show that Bi2OS2 and LaOBiS2 are semiconductors containing direct band gaps of 0.8-1.0 eV, and they are suggested to be candidates for optoelectronic materials in the near-infrared region without highly toxic elements.

Superconductivity phase diagram of Se-substituted CeO0.5F0.5Bi(S1-xSex)2

We investigated the effects of Se substitution on the lattice constants and superconducting properties of CeO0.5F0.5Bi(S1-xSex)2. With increasing Se concentration, the a lattice constant increased, while the c lattice constant did not show any significant increase between x = 0.1 and x = 0.5. Bulk superconductivity was observed in samples with x = 0.2-0.4, and the superconducting transition temperature was the highest at x = 0.3. The obtained superconductivity phase diagram was compared to those of LaO0.5F0.5Bi(S1-xSex)2 and NdO0.5F0.5Bi(S1-xSex)2.

Anisotropic upper critical field of BiS2-based superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiS2

Superconducting properties under high magnetic fields for the novel BiS2-based layered superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 (polycrystalline sample prepared using the high-pressure synthesis method) have been investigated. The anisotropy of the upper critical field was discussed by analyzing the temperature dependence of the temperature derivative of resistivity. The temperature dependence of upper critical field showed an anomalous behavior with a characteristic magnetic field of 8 T. We revealed that the anomalous behavior was caused by the existence of three kinds of upper critical field, HC2max, HC2mid and HC2min in LaO0.5F0.5BiS2. The lowest upper critical field HC2min is regarded as the Hc2 where the superconducting states of the grains with an orientation of H // c are suppressed. The HC2max and HC2mid are regarded as the Hc2 where the superconducting states of the grains with an orientation of H // ab are suppressed. The difference between the HC2max and HC2mid could be explained by the anisotropy of superconducting states within the Bi-S plane. The estimated anisotropy parameter of the upper critical fields was about 7.4 for the high-pressure-synthesized LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 polycrystalline sample. Since the value was clearly lower than the anisotropy parameter of over 30 observed in the previous report on the LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 single crystals grown under ambient pressure, we concluded that a larger anisotropy of superconductivity was not essential for the enhancement of Tc, and lower anisotropy might be important for a higher Tc in LaO1-xFxBiS2.

Element Substitution Effect on Superconductivity in BiS2-Based NdO_{1-x}F_xBiS_2

Recently, new layered superconductors having a BiS2-type conduction layer have been discovered. NdO1-xFxBiS2 is a typical BiS2-based superconductor with a maximum Tc of 5.4 K. In this study, the effect of element substitution within the superconducting layer of BiS2-based NdO0.5F0.5BiS2 was investigated. We systematically synthesized two kinds of polycrystalline samples of NdO0.5F0.5Bi(S1-xSex)2 and NdO0.5F0.5Bi1-ySbyS2 by a two-step solid-state reaction method. The phase purity and the changes in lattice constants were investigated by x-ray diffraction. The superconducting properties were investigated by magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements. It was found that the partial substitution of S by Se resulted in the uniaxial lattice expansion along the a axis. The superconducting transition temperature were gradually degraded with increasing Se concentration in NdO0.5F0.5Bi(S1-xSex)2. When Bi was partially substituted by Sb, the uniaxial lattice contraction along the c axis was observed in NdO0.5F0.5Bi1-ySbyS2. In the Sb-substituted system, a metal-insulator transition was observed with increasing Sb concentration.

Enhancement of Tc by uniaxial lattice contraction in BiS2-based superconductor PrO0.5F0.5BiS2

We investigated the crystal structure and superconducting properties of As-grown and high-pressure-annealed PrO0.5F0.5BiS2. We found that the high-pressure annealing generates uniaxial lattice contraction along the c axis. Both As-grown and high-pressure-annealed PrO0.5F0.5BiS2 show bulk superconductivity. The Tc of PrO0.5F0.5BiS2 is clearly enhanced from Tczero = 3.6 K to Tczero = 5.5 K by high-pressure annealing. Unexpectedly, the semiconducting characteristics is relatively enhanced by high-pressure annealing. Namely, we assume that the enhancement of Tc can not be understood by an increase of electron carriers. Having considered these facts, we conclude that the enhancement of Tc correlates with uniaxial lattice contraction along the c axis in PrO0.5F0.5BiS2.

Increase in Tc and change of crystal structure by high-pressure annealing in BiS2-based superconductor CeO0.3F0.7BiS2

Recently, several types of BiS2-based superconductor such as Bi4O4S3, REO1-xFxBiS2 (RE: rare earth) and Sr1-xLaxFBiS2 have been discovered. In this study, we have investigated the crystal structure and the superconducting properties for two kinds of polycrystalline samples (As-grown and high-pressure-annealed samples) of the BiS2-based superconductor CeO0.3F0.7BiS2. We found that both the As-grown and the high-pressure-annealed CeO0.3F0.7BiS2 samples show bulk superconductivity. A higher Tc was observed in the high-pressure-annealed sample. The Tc of CeO0.3F0.7BiS2 increased from Tczero = 2.7 K to Tczero = 3.7 K by high-pressure annealing. The lattice constant of a and c axis did not show remarkable differences between the As-grown and the high-pressure-annealed samples. Nevertheless, the peak symmetry of the (200) peak seemed to become more symmetric while the (004) peak did not show such a difference, indicating that the crystal structure within the ab plane changed to a higher-symmetric phase, a perfect tetragonal, by high-pressure annealing in CeO0.3F0.7BiS2.

Role of the Ce valence in the coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism of CeO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$ revealed by Ce $L_3$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy

We have performed Ce $L_3$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements on CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$BiS$_2$, in which the superconductivity of the BiS$_2$ layer and the ferromagnetism of the CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ layer are induced by the F-doping, in order to investigate the impact of the F-doping on the local electronic and lattice structures. The Ce $L_3$-edge XAS spectrum of CeOBiS$_2$ exhibits coexistence of $4f^1$ (Ce$^{3+}$) and $4f^0$ (Ce$^{4+}$) state transitions revealing Ce mixed valency in this system. The spectral weight of the $4f^0$ state decreases with the F-doping and completely disappears for $x>0.4$ where the system shows the superconductivity and the ferromagnetism. The results suggest that suppression of Ce-S-Bi coupling channel by the F-doping appears to drive the system from the valence fluctuation regime to the Kondo-like regime, leading to the coexistence of the superconducting BiS$_2$ layer and the ferromagnetic CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ layer.

Soft x-ray photoemission study of new BiS$_{2}$-layered superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$

We use core level and valence band soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (SXPES) to investigate electronic structure of new BiS$_{2}$ layered superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$. Core level spectra of doped samples show a new spectral feature at the lower binding energy side of the Bi 4${f}$ main peak, which may be explained by core-hole screening with metallic states near the Fermi level ($E_{\rm F}$). Experimental electronic structure and its ${x}$ dependence (higher binding energy shift of the valence band as well as appearance of new states near $E_{\rm F}$ having dominant Bi 6${p}$ character) were found to be consistent with the predictions of band structure calculations in general. Noticeable deviation of the spectral shape of the states near $E_{\rm F}$ from that of calculations might give insight into the interesting physical properties. These results provide first experimental electronic structure of the new BiS$_{2}$ layered superconductors.

Stabilization of high-Tc phase of BiS2-based superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 using high-pressure synthesis

High-quality polycrystalline samples of LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 were obtained using high-pressure synthesis technique. The LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 sample prepared by heating at 700 C under 2 GPa showed superconductivity with superconducting transition temperatures (Tc) of Tconset = 11.1 and Tczero = 8.5 K in the electrical resistivity measurements and Tconset = 11.5 and Tcirr = 9.4 K in the magnetic susceptibility measurements, which are obviously higher than those of the LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 polycrystalline samples obtained using conventional solid-state reaction. It was found that the high-Tc phase can be stabilized under high pressure and relatively-low annealing temperature. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the high-Tc phase possessed a small ratio of lattice constants of a and c, c/a.

Chemical pressure effect on Tc in BiS2-based Ce1-xNdxO0.5F0.5BiS2

We have investigated the crystal structure and superconducting properties of the BiS2-based layered superconductor Ce1-xNdxO0.5F0.5BiS2. Bulk superconductivity was observed for x > 0.3, and the transition temperature was enhanced with increasing Nd concentration. The highest transition temperature was 4.8 K for x = 1.0. With increasing Nd concentration, the length of the a axis decreased, while the length of the c axis did not show a remarkable change. The chemical pressure along the a axis upon Nd substitution seemed to be linked with the inducement of bulk superconductivity. We found that the chemical pressure effect did not completely correspond to the external pressure effect.

Coexistence of bulk superconductivity and ferromagnetism in CeO1-xFxBiS2

We show the observation of the coexistence of bulk superconductivity and ferromagnetism in CeO1-xFxBiS2(x = 0 - 1.0) prepared by annealing under high-pressure. In CeO1-xFxBiS2 system, both superconductivity and two types of ferromagnetism with respective magnetic transition temperatures of 4.5 K and 7.5 K are induced upon systematic F substitution. This fact suggests that carriers generated by the substitution of O by F are supplied to not only the BiS2 superconducting layers but also the CeO blocking layers. Furthermore, the highest superconducting transition temperature is observed when the ferromagnetism is also enhanced, which implies that superconductivity and ferromagnetism are linked to each other in the CeO1-xFxBiS2 system.

Correlation between crystal structure and superconducting properties of the BiS2-based superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 was investigated. Pressure-induced Enhancement of Superconductivity in BiS$_2$-layered LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$BiS$_2$

The newly discovered BiS$_2$-based LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_2$ ($x$=0.5) becomes superconductive at $T_c$=2.5 K. Electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements are performed under pressure to determine the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. We observe that $T_c$ abruptly increases from 2.5 K to 10.7 K at a pressure of 0.7 GPa. According to high-pressure X-ray diffraction measurements, a structural phase transition from a tetragonal phase ($P$4/$nmm$) to a monoclinic phase ($P$2$_1/m$) also occurs at around $\sim$ 1 GPa. We consider that a pressure-induced enhancement of superconductivity is caused by the structural phase transition.

The FeSe film with the composition ratio of Fe : Se = 1 : 1 is fabricated at a voltage of -0.9 V and pH 2.1 in our electrochemical deposition. Enhancement of superconducting properties in FeSe wires using a quenching technique

Enhancements of superconducting properties were observed in FeSe wires using a quenching technique. Zero resistivity was achieved at about 10 K in quenched wires, which is about 2 K higher than that of polycrystalline FeSe bulk. Furthermore, transport Jc of quenched wires showed three times higher than that of furnace-cooled wires. In contrast, the quenched polycrystalline FeSe bulks did not show the enhancement of Tc. The quenching technique is a greatly promising for fabricating FeSe wires with high Tc and high Jc, and quenched FeSe wires have high potential for superconducting wire applications.

Evolution of two-step structural phase transition in Fe1+dTe detected by low-temperature x-ray diffraction

The low-temperature crystal structure of Fe1.13Te, which exhibits an anomalous two-step magnetic transition, was clarified by the systematic x-ray diffraction measurements. It was found that two-step structural phase transition, tetragonal-orthorhombic-monoclinic, occurred correspondingly to the two-step magnetic transition. The detailed analysis of the profile at 5 K indicated the coexistence of the minor orthorhombic area inside the major monoclinic lattice, which could explain the lower-shift (suppression) of the antiferromagnetic transition temperature in Fe1.13Te and suggest a possibility of superconductivity at the domain boundary.

Large local disorder in the superconducting K_{0.8}Fe_{1.6}Se_{2} studied by extended x-ray absorption fine structure

We have measured local structure of superconducting K_{0.8}Fe_{1.6}Se_{2} chalcogenide (T_{c}=31.8 K) by temperature dependent polarized extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) at the Fe and Se K-edges. We find that the system is characterized by a large local disorder. The Fe-Se and Fe-Fe distances are found to be shorter than the distances measured by diffraction, while the corresponding mean square relative displacements reveal large Fe-site disorder and relatively large c-axis disorder. The local force constant for Fe-Se bondlength (k ~ 5.8 eV/Å^{2}) is similar to the one found in the binary FeSe superconductor, however, the Fe-Fe bondlength appears to get flexible (k ~ 2.1 eV/Å^{2}) in comparison to the binary FeSe (k ~ 3.5 eV/Å^{2}), an indication of partly relaxed Fe-Fe networks in K_{0.8}Fe_{1.6}Se_{2}. The results suggest glassy nature of the title system, with the superconductivity being similar to the one in the granular materials.

Novel BiS2-based layered superconductor Bi4O4S3

Exotic superconductivity has often been discovered in materials with a layered (two-dimensional) crystal structure. The low dimensionality can affect the electronic structure and can realize high transition temperatures (Tc) and/or unconventional superconductivity mechanisms. As standard examples, we now have two types of high-Tc superconductors. The first group is the Cu-oxide superconductors whose crystal structure is basically composed of a stacking of spacer (blocking) layers and superconducting CuO2 layers.1-4 The second group is the Fe-based superconductors which also possess a stacking structure of spacer layers and superconducting Fe2An2 (An = P, As, Se, Te) layers.5-13 In both systems, dramatic enhancements of Tc are achieved by optimizing the spacer layer structure, for instance, a variety of composing elements, spacer thickness, and carrier doping levels with respect to the superconducting layers. In this respect, to realize higher-Tc superconductivity, other than Cu-oxide and Fe-based superconductors, the discovery of a new prototype of layered superconductors needs to be achieved. Here we show superconductivity in a new bismuth-oxysulfide layered compound Bi4O4S3. Crystal structure analysis indicates that this superconductor has a layered structure composed of stacking of Bi4O4(SO4)1-x and Bi2S4 layers; the parent compound (x = 0) is Bi6O8S5. Band calculation suggests that Bi4O4S3 (x = 0.5) is metallic while Bi6O8S5 (x = 0) is a band insulator with Bi3+. Furthermore, the Fermi level for Bi4O4S3 is just on the peak position of the partial density of states of the Bi 6p orbital within the BiS2 layer. The BiS2 layer is a basic structure which provides another universality class for layered superconducting family, and this opens up a new field in the physics and chemistry of low-dimensional superconductors.

Pressure Study of BiS2-Based Superconductors Bi4O4S3 and La(O,F)BiS2

We report the electrical resistivity measurements under pressure for the recently discovered BiS2-based layered superconductors Bi4O4S3 and La(O,F)BiS2. In Bi4O4S3, the transition temperature Tc decreases monotonically without a distinct change in the metallic behavior in the normal state. In La(O,F)BiS2, on the other hand, Tc initially increases with increasing pressure and then decreases above ? 1 GPa. The semiconducting behavior in the normal state is suppressed markedly and monotonically, whereas the evolution of Tc is nonlinear. The strong suppression of the semiconducting behavior without doping in La(O,F)BiS2 suggests that the Fermi surface is located in the vicinity of some instability. In the present study, we elucidate that the superconductivity in the BiS2 layer favors the Fermi surface at the boundary between the semiconducting and metallic behaviors.

Superconductivity in novel BiS2-based layered superconductor LaO1-xFxBiS2

Layered superconductors have provided some interesting fields in condensed matter physics owing to the low dimensionality of their electronic states. For example, the high-Tc (high transition temperature) cuprates and the Fe-based superconductors possess a layered crystal structure composed of a stacking of spacer (blocking) layers and conduction (superconducting) layers, CuO2 planes or Fe-Anion layers. The spacer layers provide carriers to the conduction layers and induce exotic superconductivity. Recently, we have reported superconductivity in the novel BiS2-based layered compound Bi4O4S3. It was found that superconductivity of Bi4O4S3 originates from the BiS2 layers. The crystal structure is composed of a stacking of BiS2 superconducting layers and the spacer layers, which resembles those of high-Tc cuprate and the Fe-based superconductors. Here we report a discovery of a new type of BiS2-based layered superconductor LaO1-xFxBiS2, with a Tc as high as 10.6 K.

Unidirectional Electronic Structure in the Parent State of Iron-Chalcogenide Superconductor Fe$_{1+δ}$Te

We use scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy to explore the electronic structure of Fe$_{1.07}$Te which is the parent compound of the iron-chalcogenide superconductors. A unidirectional electronic structure with a period of $a_{0}$ (where $a_{0}$ is the lattice constant) along the a-axis is observed. The unidirectional pattern is visible within an energy range from approximately -200 to +130 meV. Since the direction of the unidirectional electronic structure coincides with those of the underlying antiferromagnetic and the predicted orbital orders, it is presumable that the observed unidirectional structure is closely tied to these orders and is peculiar to the parent state in iron-based superconductors.

Weak Spin Fluctuation with Finite Wave Vector and Superconducting Gap Symmetry in KxFe2-ySe2: 77Se Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

We report $^{77}$Se-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) results down to sufficiently low temperatures under magnetic fields parallel to both the $ab$-plane and the c-axis in a paramagnetic/superconducting (PM/SC) phase of K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$. The observation of anisotropy in the orbital part of the Knight shift results in the anisotropy of its spin part increasing on approaching the transition temperature. The anisotropy of the Korringa relation suggests the presence of the weak spin fluctuations with a finite wave vector $\bm{q}$, which induce the magnetic fluctuations along the ab-plane at the Se site. Such fluctuations do not correspond to the stripe $(π,0)$ correlation of the Fe moment observed in many Fe-based superconductors, and are not contradictory to weak $(π,π)$ correlations. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ shows a field-independent $T_1T \sim const.$ behavior at low temperatures for $H \parallel ab$, which is attributed to the nonzero density of states at the Fermi level and can be explained by the sign-changing order parameter even for nodeless gaps. The temperature dependence of $1/T_1$ is reproduced well by nodeless models with two isotropic gaps or a single anisotropic gap. The obtained gap magnitude in the isotropic two-gap model is comparable to those obtained in the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments.

Intrinsic phase separation in superconducting K0.8Fe1.6Se2 (Tc= 31.8 K) single crystals

Temperature dependent single-crystal x-ray diffraction (XRD) in transmission mode probing the bulk of the newly discovered K0.8Fe1.6Se2 superconductor (Tc = 31.8 K) using synchrotron radiation is reported. A clear evidence of intrinsic phase separation at 520 K between two competing phases, (i) a first majority magnetic phase with a ThCr2Si2-type tetragonal lattice modulated by the iron vacancy ordering and (ii) a minority non-magnetic phase having an in-plane compressed lattice volume and a weak superstructure, is reported. The XRD peaks due to the Fe vacancy ordering in the majority phase disappear by increasing the temperature at 580 K, well above phase separation temperature confirming the order-disorder phase transition. The intrinsic phase separation at 520K between a competing first magnetic phase and a second non-magnetic phase in the normal phase both having lattice superstructures (that imply different Fermi surface topology reconstruction and charge density) is assigned to a lattice-electronic instability of the K0.8Fe1.6Se2 system typical of a system tuned at a Lifshitz critical point of an electronic topological transition that gives a multi-gaps superconductor tuned a shape resonance.

Possible Superconducting Symmetry and Magnetic Correlations in K0.8Fe2Se2: A 77Se-NMR Study

We report ^77Se-NMR measurements in the recent discovered K_0.8Fe_2Se_2 with the superconducting transition temperature T_c=32 K. The characteristic point of this system is that the high density of state is located in the vicinity of the Fermi level. The comparison between Knight shift and nuclear spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 shows that the antiferromagnetic spin correlation is not strong in this system, but it is reasonable to consider that its development toward low temperatures occurs. 1/T_1 in the superconducting state can be reproduced well by an s+- wave model, but a d wave model also roughly reproduces the data. Non exponential behavior in 1/T_1 at low temperatures disagrees with a single isotropic gap.

Thin films prepared using this process will develop both detailed studies on intrinsic nature of Fe-based superconductivity and application to superconducting devices.

Superconductivity in PbO-type Fe chalcogenides

PbO-type Fe chalcogenide has been drawing much attention as the Fe-based superconductor with the most simple crystal structure. Whereas FeSe is an intrinsic superconductor, FeTe, while having a structure analogous to FeSe, exhibits antiferromagnetic ordering. The relationship between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity provides key information to understand better superconductivity in Fe chalcogenides. Furthermore the significant pressure effect on Tc in the Fe-chalcogenide superconductors, which is likely to be correlated with the crystal structure and/or magnetism, is important in elucidating the mechanism of Fe-based superconductivity. Due to the simple structure and composition, Fe-chalcogenide superconductor is one candidate for applications to such areas as superconducting wires and thin films.

Transport properties and microstructure of mono- and seven-core wires of FeSe1-xTex superconductor by Fe-diffusion powder-in-tube method

We report the successful fabrication of mono- and seven-core superconducting wires of FeSe1-xTex using an in-situ Fe-diffusion process based on the powder-in-tube (Fe-diffusion PIT) method. The reacted layer in these wires were found to have composite structure with composition nearly FeSe and FeTe for the inner and outer layers, although a single layer of composition FeSe0.5Te0.5 was supposed to be formed. The self-field transport Jc values at 4.2 K were found to be 226.2 A/cm2 and 100.3 A/cm2 respectively for mono- and seven-core wires. The Jc's of mono- and seven-core wires dropped rapidly at low fields and then showed a gradual decrease with increasing magnetic fields. In addition, the seven-core wire showed higher Jc than the mono-core wire under higher magnetic fields, indicating that the seven-core wire of FeSe1-xTex superconductor using Fe-diffusion PIT method is advantageous for the superconducting-wire application under high magnetic fields.

Transport properties of the single- and 3-core Fe-Se wires fabricated by a novel chemical-transformation PIT process

We fabricated single- and 3-core superconducting Fe-Se wires using a novel process based on a chemical transformation from hexagonal FeSe1+d (non-superconducting) to tetragonal FeSe (superconducting) via an optimal supply of Fe from the Fe sheath by annealing. This process enhanced a packing density of superconducting core inside the sheath, owing to an expansion of the lattice volume via a chemical transformation from high-density hexagonal FeSe1+d to low-density tetragonal FeSe. The obtained superconducting wire showed superconductivity below ~10 K and the upper critical field was estimated to be 19.3 T at 0 K. The obtained transport critical current densities at 0 T were 588 A/cm2 for the 3-core wire and 218 A/cm2 for the single-core wire.

A review of Fe-chalcogenide superconductors: the simplest Fe-based superconductor

Here we summarize the physical properties of the newly discovered Fe-chalcogenide superconductors. The Fe-chalcogenide superconductors attract us as the simplest Fe-based superconductors. Furthermore, Fe chalcogenides show a huge pressure effect on their superconducting properties. The origin of the high transition temperature was discussed with both the change in crystal structure and magnetism. The progress on the thin-film and superconducting-wire fabrications are also described.

Evolution of superconductivity by oxygen annealing in FeTe0.8S0.2

Oxygen annealing dramatically improved the superconducting properties of solid-state-reacted FeTe0.8S0.2, which showed only a broad onset of superconducting transition just after the synthesis. The zero resistivity appeared and reached 8.5 K by the oxygen annealing at 200\degree C. The superconducting volume fraction was also enhanced from 0 to almost 100%. The lattice constants were compressed by the oxygen annealing, indicating that the evolution of bulk superconductivity in FeTe0.8S0.2 was correlated to the shrinkage of lattice.

Moisture-induced superconductivity in FeTe0.8S0.2

Moisture-induced superconductivity was observed in FeTe0.8S0.2. With exposing the sample to the air, the zero resistivity temperature and the superconducting volume fraction were enhanced up to 7.2 K and 48.5 %, respectively, while the as-grown sample showed only filamentary superconductivity. We concluded that the causes of the evolution of superconductivity were water-related ions and/or molecules, because only the sample kept in water at room temperature for several days showed superconductivity. The speed of evolution of superconductivity was strongly enhanced by immersing the sample into the hot water.

Single crystal growth and structural characterization of FeTe1-xSx

We have synthesized single crystals of FeTe1-xSx and investigated the structural and physical properties. The actual S concentration was found to be significantly smaller than the starting nominal value. The solubility limit of S for the Te site for the crystals grown using a self-flux method was estimated to be around 12 %. Although a suppression of antiferromagnetic transition was observed by S substitution, bulk superconductivity was not observed. A phase diagram of as-grown FeTe1-xSx single crystal was established on the basis of the structural and physical properties.

Superconductivity in oxygen-annealed FeTe1-xSx single crystal

We investigated the S-doping-driven phase transition from antiferromagnetic to superconducting in FeTe1-xSx single crystals. The partial substitution of Te by S suppresses antiferromagnetism in Fe-square lattice. Superconductivity is induced by oxygen annealing for only FeTe1-xSx in which the long-range magnetic ordering is suppressed. To realize superconductivity in FeTe1-xSx, both S concentration enough to suppress antiferromagnetism and oxygen annealing are required. Anisotropy of superconductivity in oxygen-annealed FeTe0.886S0.114 was estimated to be 1.17.

Transport properties of the new Fe-based superconductor KxFe2Se2 (Tc = 33 K)

We synthesized the new Fe-based superconductor K0.8Fe2Se2 single crystals. The obtained single crystal exhibited a sharp superconducting transition, and the onset and zero-resistivity temperature was estimated to be 33 and 31.8 K, respectively. A high upper critical field of 192 T was obtained. Anisotropy of superconductivity of K0.8Fe2Se2 was ~3.6. Both the high upper critical field and comparably low anisotropy are advantageous for the application under high magnetic field.

Pressure effects on FeSe family superconductors

We investigated the pressure effects on the FeSe superconductor and the related compounds. Pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature (Tc) for FeSe0.8S0.2 exhibits a dome-shaped behavior below 0.76 GPa. On the other hand, the Tc of FeSe0.25Te0.75 linearly increases up to 0.99 GPa. Here we discuss the relation between the physical pressure effects and the chemical pressure effects on the FeSe system.

Upper critical fields of the 11-system iron-chalcogenide superconductor FeSe$_{0.25}$Te$_{0.75}$

We have performed electrical resistivity measurements of a polycrystalline sample of FeSe$_{0.25}$Te$_{0.75}$, which exhibits superconductivity at $T_{\rm c} \sim 14$ K, in magnetic fields up to 55 T to determine the upper critical field $μ_{0}H_{\rm c2}$. In this compound, very large slopes of $μ_{0}H_{\rm c2}$ at the onset, the mid-point, the zero-resistivity temperatures on superconductivity are determined to be -13.7, -10.1, and -6.9 T/K, respectively. The observed $μ_{0}H_{\rm c2}(T)$s of this compound are considerably smaller than those expected from the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model, manifesting the Pauli limiting behavior. These results suggest that this compound has a large Maki parameter, but it is smaller than that calculated for a weak-coupling superconductor, indicating a large superconducting gap of this compound as a strong-coupling superconductor.
