Comment on Microscopic magnetic modeling for the S = 1/2 alternating chain compounds Na3Cu2SbO6 and Na2Cu2TeO6 (arXiv:1402.1091)

In a recent paper by Schmitt et al. (arXiv:1402.1091), signs of two exchange interactions of one-dimensional alternating chains in distorted honeycomb systems of Na3Cu2SbO6 and Na2Cu2TeO6 are argued by theoretical calculations. Although the authors report that they have clarified that the interaction J1a is ferromagnetic between the spins within a structural dimer, and J1b is antiferromagnetic between these dimers, these results have been known for a long time by our two papers, which are cited by Schmitt et al.

Spin disorder in an Ising honeycomb chain cobaltate

We report on a member of the spin-disordered honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet in a quasi-one-dimensional cobaltate Ba_3Co_2O_6(CO_3)_0.7. Resistivity exhibits as semimetallic along the face-sharing CoO6 chains. Magnetic susceptibility shows strongly anisotropic Ising-spin character with the easy axis along the chain due to significant spin-orbit coupling and a trigonal crystal field. Nevertheless, ^135Ba NMR detects no indication of the long-range magnetic order down to 0.48 K. Marginally itinerant electrons possess large entropy and low-lying excitations with a Wilson ratio R_W = 116, which highlight interplays of charge, spin, and orbital in the disordered ground state.

Study of Ni-doping Effect of Specific Heat and Transport Properties for LaFe1-yNiyAsO0.89F0.11

Specific heats and transport quantities of the LaFe1-yNiyAsO0.89F0.11 system have been measured, and the results are discussed together with those reported previously by our group mainly for LaFe1-yCoyAsO0.89F0.11 and LaFeAsO0.89-xF0.11+x systems. The y dependence of the electronic specific heat coefficient gamma can basically be understood by using the rigid-band picture, where Ni ions provide 2 electrons to the host conduction bands and behave as nonmagnetic impurities. The superconducting transition temperature Tc of LaFe1-yNiyAsO0.89F0.11 becomes zero, as the carrier density p (=2y+0.11) doped to LaFeAsO reaches its critical value p_c_ ~0.2. This p_c_ value of ~0.2 is commonly observed for LaFe1-yCoyAsO0.89F0.11 and LaFeAsO0.89-xF0.11+x systems, in which the relations p = x+0.11 and p = y+0.11 hold, respectively. As we pointed out previously, the critical value corresponds to the disappearance of the hole-Fermi surface. These results indicate that the carrier number solely determines the Tc value. We have not observed appreciable effects of pair breaking, which originates from the nonmagnetic impurity scattering of conduction electrons and strongly suppresses T_c_ values of systems with sign-reversing of the order parameter over the Fermi surface(s). On the basis of the results, the so-called s_+-_ symmetry of the order parameter with the sign-reversing is excluded.

75As-NMR Studies of LaFeAsO1-xFx for Various x Values

Results of 75As NMR and NQR measurements are reported for superconducting samples of LaFeAsO1-xFx with various x values. The x dependent widths of the superconducting transition and those of the NQR spectra indicate that the optimally doped LaFeAsO1-xFx sample with the superconducting transition temperature Tc ~28 K has the smallest width or smallest inhomogeneity of the superconducting order parameter Δ. In the analyses of the temperature (T) dependence of the NMR longitudinal relaxation rate 1/T1, we have tried to use a simple relation 1/T1 ~ T^n to see how fast 1/T1 decreases when the superconducting order parameter grows. The relation holds rather well in the T region of ~0.3Tc < T =< Tc, and n varies from 2.5-6 with varying x, having the maximum value 5-6 at the optimal x. These results indicate that the x dependence of n originates from the spatial distribution of Δ, and that the T^{5-6} behavior is considered to be intrinsic to this system.

High Temperature Multiferroic State in RBaCuFeO5 (R= Y, Lu and Tm)

Magnetic and/or dielectric behaviors have been studied for YBaCuFeO5, LuBaCuFeO5 and TmBaCuFeO5, which are known as members of oxygen-defect ordered perovskite systems RBaCuFeO5 (R=lanthanides Ln and other trivalent elements) and have two magnetic transitions: The magnetic structure of the high temperature(T) ordered phase is basically antiferromagnetic, and with decreasing T, a modulated magnetic component superposed on the antiferromagnetic moments appears at the second transition, where the ferroelectricity also appears (multiferroic). Here, we have found that all the systems studied here exhibit multiferroic behavior in the low T phase, and that TmBaCuFeO5 becomes multiferroic at a temperature as high as the melting point of ice, which is, to our knowledge, the highest value ever found in zero magnetic field.

Magnetic Ordering in V-Layers of the Superconducting System of Sr2VFeAsO3

Results of transport, magnetic, thermal, and 75As-NMR measurements are presented for superconducting Sr2VFeAsO3 with an alternating stack of FeAs and perovskite-like block layers. Although apparent anomalies in magnetic and thermal properties have been observed at ~150 K, no anomaly in transport behaviors has been observed at around the same temperature. These results indicate that V ions in the Sr2VO3-block layers have localized magnetic moments and that V-electrons do not contribute to the Fermi surface. The electronic characteristics of Sr2VFeAsO3 are considered to be common to those of other superconducting systems with Fe-pnictogen layers.

Effects of Ru Doping on the Transport Behavior and Superconducting Transition Temperature of NdFeAsO0.89F0.11

The transport behavior and superconducting transition temperature Tc of NdFe1-yRuyAsO0.89F0.11 have been studied for various y values. Because Ru impurities are isoelectronic to host Fe atoms, we basically expect that the number of electrons does not change with y, at least in the region of small y values. The results indicate that the rate of Tc suppression by Ru atoms is too small to be explained by the pair breaking effect of nonmagnetic impurities expected for the S+- symmetry, confirming our previous results for Co doping.

Studies of Impurity-Doping Effects and NMR Measurement5s of La1111 and/or Nd 1111 Fe-Pnictide Superconductors

Measurements of the electrical resistivities, Hall coefficients, thermoelectric powers, electronic specific heat coefficients have been carried out for samples of LnFe1-yMyAsO1-xFx (Ln=La, Nd; M=Co, Mn; x=0.11) obtained by M atom dopings to the superconducting LnFeAsO1-xFx (Ln1111) system. The NMR longitudinal relaxation rates 1/T1 have also been measured for samples of LaFe1-yCoyAsO1-xFx with various x values. Co atoms doped to the superconducting LnFeAsO1-xFx are nonmagnetic, and the Tc-suppression by the Co atoms has been found to be too weak to understand by the pair breaking effect expected for the S+- superconducting symmetry proposed as the most probable one for the system. It throws a serious doubt whether the symmetry is realized in this system. Instead of the pair breaking, two mechanisms of the Tc-suppression by the doped impurities have been found: One is the electron localization, which appears when the sheet resistance exceeds h/4e2=6.45 kohm, and another is the disappearance or reduction of the hole-Fermi-surfaces around the gamma point in the reciprocal space. The latter mechanism has been observed, when the electron number increases with increasing Co-doping level and the system changes from an anomalous metal to an ordinary one. On the two distinct T dependences of 1/T1 of LaFeAsO1-xFx, 1/T1 T6 reported by our group in the T region from Tc to ~0.4 Tc for samples with the highest Tc values with varying x, and 1/T1 T2.5-3.0 observed by many groups in the almost entire T region studied below Tc, we discuss what the origin of the difference is, and show that, at least, the T2.5-3.0-like dependence of 1/T1 cannot be considered as the experimental evidence for the S+- symmetry of the order parameter.

Studies of Multiferroic System LiCu2O2 I Sample Characterization and Relationship between Magnetic Properties and Multiferroic Nature

Single-crystal samples of LiCu2O2 with spin 1/2 Cu2+ chains of edge-sharing CuO4 square planes (ribbon chains), have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and magnetic measurements. Neither the atomic deficiency nor the mixing of Cu and Li atoms has been found, indicating that lattice defects conceived as a possible origin of the reported multiferroic behavior can be excluded. Anomalies found in the data of specific heat and neutron magnetic Bragg reflections show clear evidence that the system exhibits successive magnetic transitions at TN1=24.5 K and TN2=22.8 K. Based on the magnetic structures in the intermediate (TN2<T<TN1) and low temperature (T<TN2) phases, determined by the combined studies of neutron scattering and 7Li-NMR measurements, we can consistently understand the fact that the multiferroic properties are observed only below TN2 by considering existing theories.

Studies of Multiferroic System of LiCu2O2 II Magnetic Structures of Two Ordered Phases with Incommensurate Modulations

Neutron diffraction and 7Li-NMR have been applied to determine the multiferroic system LiCu2O2, which has four chains (ribbon chains) of edge-sharing CuO4 square planes in a unit cell. We have confirmed that there are successive magnetic transitions at TN1=24.5 K and TN2=22.8 K. In the T region between TN1 and TN2, the quasi one-dimensional spins (S=1/2) of Cu2+ ions within a chain have a collinear and sinusoidally modulated structure with Cu-moments parallel to the c-axis and with the modulation vector along the b-axis. At T < TN2, an ellipsoidal helical spin structure with the incommensurate modulation has been found. Here, we present detailed parameters, describing the modulation amplitudes, helical axis vectors as well as the relative phases of the modulations of four ribbon chains, which can well reproduce both the NMR and neutron results in the two magnetically ordered phases. This finding of the rather precise magnetic structures enables us to discuss the relationship between the magnetic structure and the multiferroic nature of the present system in zero magnetic field, as presented in our companion paper (paper I), and open a way how to understand the reported electric polarization under the finite magnetic field.

Ferroelectric Transition Induced by the Incommensurate Magnetic Ordering in LiCuVO4

A ferroelectric transition occurring simultaneously with helical spin order has been found in both the polycrystalline and single crystal samples of LiCuVO4. The system has Cu2+ spins (s=1/2) of the CuO2 chains formed of edge-sharing CuO4 squares. Possibly due to the frustrated nature caused by the competition between the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions, Cu spins exhibit, as has been already reported, the helical magnetic order with the incommensurate modulation vector Q along the chain direction and with the helical axis e3 perpendicular to the CuO4 squares. The electric polarization P can be understood by the recently predicted relation (P is proportional to Q*e3). The transition temperature has been found to be gradually suppressed by the applied magnetic field.

59Co-NMR Knight Shift of the Superconducting NaxCoO2.yH2O

Layered Co oxide NaxCoO2.yH2O with the superconducting transition temperature Tc =4.5 K has been studied by 59Co-NMR. The Knight shift K estimated from the observed spectra for powder sample exhibits almost temperature(T)-independent behavior above Tc and decreases with decreasing T below Tc. This result and the existence of the coherence peak in the spin-lattice-relaxation-rate versus T curve reported by the present authors indicate, naively speaking, that the singlet order parameter with s-wave symmetry is realized in NaxCoO2.yH2O. Differences of the observed behaviors between the spectra of the non-aligned sample and the one aligned in epoxy adhesive by applying the external magnetic field are discussed.

Transport and NQR Studies of Nd1.6-xCexSr0.4CuO4 with T* Structure

Transport and Cu-NQR studies have been carried out for the T*-type high temperature superconducting Cu oxide Nd1.6-xCexSr0.4CuO4 with single layered CuO2 planes formed by CuO5 pyramids. No anomaly related to the static or quasi static "stripe" order has been observed in the temperature T and x dependence of the thermoelectric powers S. We have not found such kind of anomaly in the x dependence of the superconducting transition temperature Tc, either. Although the decrease of the Cu NQR intensity with decreasing T (wipeout) has been observed in this system, it can be understood by considering the loss of the itinerant nature of the electrons, which takes place in the proximity region of the metal-insulator phase boundary, and cannot be connected with the static or quasi static "stripe" order.
