Relativistic calculations of quasi-one-electron atoms and ions using Laguerre and Slater spinors

A relativistic description of the structure of heavy alkali atoms and alkali-like ions using S-spinors and L-spinors has been developed. The core wavefunction is defined by a Dirac-Fock calculation using an S-spinors basis. The S-spinor basis is then supplemented by a large set of L-spinors for the calculation of the valence wavefunction in a frozen-core model. The numerical stability of the L-spinor approach is demonstrated by computing the energies and decay rates of several low-lying hydrogen eigenstates, along with the polarizabilities of a $Z=60$ hydrogenic ion. The approach is then applied to calculate the dynamic polarizabilities of the $5s$, $4d$ and $5p$ states of Sr$^+$. The magic wavelengths at which the Stark shifts between different pairs of transitions are zero are computed. Determination of the magic wavelengths for the $5s \to 4d_{\frac32}$ and $5s \to 4d_{\frac52}$ transitions near $417$~nm (near the wavelength for the $5s \to 5p_j$ transitions) would allow a determination of the oscillator strength ratio for the $5s \to 5p_{\frac12}$ and $5s \to 5p_{\frac32}$ transitions.

The photon scattering cross-sections of atomic hydrogen

We present a unified view of the frequency dependence of the various scattering processes involved when a neutral hydrogen atom interacts with a monochromatic, linearly-polarized photon. A computational approach is employed of the atom trapped by a finite-sized-box due to a finite basis-set expansion, which generates a set of transition matrix elements between $E<0$ eigenstates and $E>0$ pseudostates. We introduce a general computational methodology that enables the computation of the frequency-dependent dipole transition polarizability with one real and two different imaginary contributions. These dipole transition polarizabilities are related to the cross-sections of one-photon photoionization, Rayleigh, Raman, and Compton scattering. Our numerical calculations reveal individual Raman scattering cross-sections above threshold that can rapidly vanish and revive. Furthermore, our numerical Compton cross-sections do not overtly suffer from the infra-red divergence problem, and are three orders-of-magnitude higher than previous analytic-based Compton scattering cross-sections. Our total photon-hydrogen scattering cross-sections thus resolve the discrepancies between these previous calculations and those in the N.I.S.T. `FFAST' database.

Effective oscillator strength distributions of spherically symmetric atoms for calculating polarizabilities and long-range atom-atom interactions

Effective oscillator strength distributions are systematically generated and tabulated for the alkali atoms, the alkaline-earth atoms, the alkaline-earth ions, the rare gases and some miscellaneous atoms. These effective distributions are used to compute the dipole, quadrupole and octupole static polarizabilities, and are then applied to the calculation of the dynamic polarizabilities at imaginary frequencies. These polarizabilities can be used to determine the long-range $C_6$, $C_8$ and $C_{10}$ atom-atom interactions for the dimers formed from any of these atoms and ions, and we present tables covering all of these combinations.

Black-body radiation shift of the Ga$^{+}$ clock transition

The blackbody radiation shift of the Ga$^+$ $4s^2 \ ^1S^e_0 \to 4s4p \ ^3P^o_0$ clock transition is computed to be $-$$0.0140 \pm 0.0048$ Hz at 300 K. The small shift is consistent with the blackbody shifts of the clock transitions of other group III ions which are of a similar size. The polarizabilities of the Ga$^+$ $4s^2 \ ^1S^e_0$, $4s4p \ ^3P^o_0$, and $4s4p \ ^1P^o_1$ states were computed using the configuration interaction method with an underlying semi-empirical core potential. A byproduct of the analysis involved large scale calculations of the low lying spectrum and oscillator strengths of the Ga$^{2+}$ ion.

Long range interactions between alkali and alkaline-earth atoms

Dispersion coefficients between the alkali metal atoms (Li-Rb) and alkaline-earth metal atoms (Be-Sr) are evaluated using matrix elements computed from frozen core configuration interaction calculations. Besides dispersion coefficients with both atoms in their respective ground states, dispersion coefficients are also given for the case where one atom is in its ground state and the other atom is in a low lying excited state.

Tune-out wavelengths for the alkaline earth atoms

The lowest 3 tune-out wavelengths of the four alkaline-earth atoms, Be, Mg, Ca and Sr are determined from tabulations of matrix elements produced from large first principles calculations. The tune-out wavelengths are located near the wavelengths for $^3P^o_1$ and $^1P^o_1$ excitations. The measurement of the tune-out wavelengths could be used to establish a quantitative relationship between the oscillator strength of the transition leading to existence of the tune-out wavelength and the dynamic polarizability of the atom at the tune-out frequency. The longest tune-out wavelengths for Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba and Yb are 454.9813 nm, 457.2372 nm, 657.446 nm, 689.200 nm, 788.875 nm and 553.00 nm respectively.

Blackbody radiation shift of B$^+$ clock transition

A calculation of the blackbody radiation shift of the B$^+$ clock transition is performed. The polarizabilities of the B$^+$ $2s^2$ $^1$S$^e$, $2s2p$ $^1$P$^o$, and $2s2p$ $^3$P$^o$ states are computed using the configuration interaction method with an underlying semi-empirical core potential. The recommended dipole polarizabilities are 9.64(3) $a_0^3$, 7.78(3) $a_0^3$ and 16.55(5) $a_0^3$ respectively. The derived frequency shift for the $2s^2$ $^1$S$^e$ $\to$ $2s2p$ $^3$P$^o_0$ transition at 300 K is 0.0160(5) Hz. The dipole polarizabilities agree with an earlier relativistic calculation (Safronova {\em et al.} Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 107} 143006 (2011)) to better than 0.2%. Quadrupole and octupole polarizabilities and non-adiabatic multipole polarizabilities are also reported.
