BeamCKMDiff: Beam-Aware Channel Knowledge Map Construction via Diffusion Transformer

Channel knowledge map (CKM) is emerging as a critical enabler for environment-aware 6G networks, offering a site-specific database to significantly reduce pilot overhead. However, existing CKM construction methods typically rely on sparse sampling measurements and are restricted to either omnidirectional maps or discrete codebooks, hindering the exploitation of beamforming gain. To address these limitations, we propose BeamCKMDiff, a generative framework for constructing high-fidelity CKMs conditioned on arbitrary continuous beamforming vectors without site-specific sampling. Specifically, we incorporate a novel adaptive layer normalization (adaLN) mechanism into the noise prediction network of the Diffusion Transformer (DiT). This mechanism injects continuous beam embeddings as {global control parameters}, effectively steering the generative process to capture the complex coupling between beam patterns and environmental geometries. Simulation results demonstrate that BeamCKMDiff significantly outperforms state-of-the-art baselines, achieving superior reconstruction accuracy in capturing main lobes and side lobes.

Channel Knowledge Map Construction via Guided Flow Matching

The efficient construction of accurate channel knowledge maps (CKMs) is crucial for unleashing the full potential of environment-aware wireless networks, yet it remains a difficult ill-posed problem due to the sparsity of available location-specific channel knowledge data. Although diffusion-based methods such as denoising diffusion probabilistic models (DDPMs) have been exploited for CKM construction, they rely on iterative stochastic sampling, rendering them too slow for real-time wireless applications. To bridge the gap between high fidelity and efficient CKM construction, this letter introduces a novel framework based on linear transport guided flow matching (LT-GFM). Deviating from the noise-removal paradigm of diffusion models, our approach models the CKM generation process as a deterministic ordinary differential equation (ODE) that follows linear optimal transport paths, thereby drastically reducing the number of required inference steps. We propose a unified architecture that is applicable to not only the conventional channel gain map (CGM) construction, but also the more challenging spatial correlation map (SCM) construction. To achieve physics-informed CKM constructions, we integrate environmental semantics (e.g., building masks) for edge recovery and enforce Hermitian symmetry for property of the SCM. Simulation results verify that LT-GFM achieves superior distributional fidelity with significantly lower Fréchet Inception Distance (FID) and accelerates inference speed by a factor of 25 compared to DDPMs.

Effective outdoor pathloss prediction: A multi-layer segmentation approach with weighting map

Predicting pathloss by considering the physical environment is crucial for effective wireless network planning. Traditional methods, such as ray tracing and model-based approaches, often face challenges due to high computational complexity and discrepancies between models and real-world environments. In contrast, deep learning has emerged as a promising alternative, offering accurate path loss predictions with reduced computational complexity. In our research, we introduce a ResNet-based model designed to enhance path loss prediction. We employ innovative techniques to capture key features of the environment by generating transmission (Tx) and reception (Rx) depth maps, as well as a distance map from the geographic data. Recognizing the significant attenuation caused by signal reflection and diffraction, particularly at high frequencies, we have developed a weighting map that emphasizes the areas adjacent to the direct path between Tx and Rx for path loss prediction. {Extensive simulations demonstrate that our model outperforms PPNet, RPNet, and Vision Transformer (ViT) by 1.2-3.0 dB using dataset of ITU challenge 2024 and ICASSP 2023. In addition, the floating point operations (FLOPs) of the proposed model is 60\% less than those of benchmarks.} Additionally, ablation studies confirm that the inclusion of the weighting map significantly enhances prediction performance.

Hybrid Mono- and Bi-static OFDM-ISAC via BS-UE Cooperation: Closed-Form CRLB and Coverage Analysis

This paper proposes a hybrid mono- and bi-static sensing framework, by leveraging the base station (BS) and user equipment (UE) cooperation in integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. This scheme is built on 3GPP-supported sensing modes, and it does not incur any extra spectrum cost or inter-cell coordination. To reveal the fundamental performance limit of the proposed hybrid sensing mode, we derive closed-form Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for sensing target localization and velocity estimation, as functions of target and UE positions. The results reveal that significant performance gains can be achieved over the purely mono- or bi-static sensing, especially when the BS-target-UE form a favorable geometry, which is close to a right triangle. The analytical results are validated by simulations using effective parameter estimation algorithm and weighted mean square error (MSE) fusion method. Based on the derived sensing bound, we further analyze the sensing coverage by varying the UE positions, which shows that sensing coverage first improves then degrades as the BS-UE separation increases. Furthermore, the sensing accuracy for a potential target with best UE selection is derived as a function of the UE density in the network.

OpenISAC: An Open-Source Real-Time Experimentation Platform for OFDM-ISAC with Over-the-Air Synchronization

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is envisioned to be one of the key usage scenarios for the sixth generation (6G) mobile communication networks. While significant progresses have been achieved for the theoretical studies, the further advancement of ISAC is hampered by the lack of accessible, open-source, and real-time experimental platforms. To address this gap, we introduce OpenISAC, a versatile and high-performance open-source platform for real-time ISAC experimentation. OpenISAC utilizes orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform and implements crucial sensing functionalities, including both monostatic and bistatic delay-Doppler sensing. A key feature of our platform is a novel over-the-air (OTA) synchronization mechanism that enables robust bistatic operations without requiring a wired connection between nodes. The platform is built entirely on open-source software, leveraging the universal software radio peripheral (USRP) hardware driver (UHD) library, thus eliminating the need for any commercial licenses. It supports a wide range of software-defined radios, from the cost-effective USRP B200 series to the high-performance X400 series. The physical layer modulator and demodulator are implemented with C++ for high-speed processing, while the sensing data is streamed to a Python environment, providing a user-friendly interface for rapid prototyping and validation of sensing signal processing algorithms. With flexible parameter selection and real-time communication and sensing operation, OpenISAC serves as a powerful and accessible tool for the academic and research communities to explore and innovate within the field of OFDM-ISAC.

A Tutorial on MIMO-OFDM ISAC: From Far-Field to Near-Field

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is one of the key usage scenarios for future sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication networks, where communication and sensing (C&S) services are simultaneously provided through shared wireless spectrum, signal processing modules, hardware, and network infrastructure. Such an integration is strengthened by the technology trends in 6G, such as denser network nodes, larger antenna arrays, wider bandwidths, higher frequency bands, and more efficient utilization of spectrum and hardware resources, which incentivize and empower enhanced sensing capabilities. As the dominant waveform used in contemporary communication systems, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is still expected to be a very competitive technology for 6G, rendering it necessary to thoroughly investigate the potential and challenges of OFDM ISAC. Thus, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive tutorial overview of ISAC systems enabled by large-scale multi-input multi-output (MIMO) and OFDM technologies and to discuss their fundamental principles, advantages, and enabling signal processing methods. To this end, a unified MIMO-OFDM ISAC system model is first introduced, followed by four frameworks for estimating parameters across the spatial, delay, and Doppler domains, including parallel one-domain, sequential one-domain, joint two-domain, and joint three-domain parameter estimation. Next, sensing algorithms and performance analyses are presented in detail for far-field scenarios where uniform plane wave (UPW) propagation is valid, followed by their extensions to near-field scenarios where uniform spherical wave (USW) characteristics need to be considered. Finally, this paper points out open challenges and outlines promising avenues for future research on MIMO-OFDM ISAC.

Integrated Sensing, Communication, and Powering (ISCAP): Towards Multi-functional 6G Wireless Networks

This article presents a novel multi-functional system for a sixth-generation (6G) wireless network with integrated sensing, communication, and powering (ISCAP), which unifies integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) and wireless information and power transfer (WIPT) techniques. The multi-functional ISCAP network promises to enhance resource utilization efficiency, reduce network costs, and improve overall performance through versatile operational modes. Specifically, a multi-functional base station (BS) can enable multi-functional transmission, by exploiting the same radio signals to perform target/environment sensing, wireless communication, and wireless power transfer (WPT), simultaneously. Besides, the three functions can be intelligently coordinated to pursue mutual benefits,i.e., wireless sensing can be leveraged to enable light-training or even training-free WIPT by providing side-channel information, and the BS can utilize WPT to wirelessly charge low-power devices for ensuring sustainable ISAC. Furthermore, multiple multi-functional BSs can cooperate in both transmission and reception phases for efficient interference management, multi-static sensing, and distributed energy beamforming. For these operational modes, we discuss the technical challenges and potential solutions, particularly focusing on the fundamental performance tradeoff limits, transmission protocol design, as well as waveform and beamforming optimization. Finally, interesting research directions are identified.

Beamforming Towards Seamless Sensing Coverage for Cellular Integrated Sensing and Communication

The sixth generation (6G) mobile communication networks are expected to offer a new paradigm of cellular integrated sensing and communication (ISAC). However, due to the intrinsic difference between sensing and communication in terms of coverage requirement, current cellular networks that are deliberately planned mainly for communication coverage are difficult to achieve seamless sensing coverage. To address this issue, this paper studies the beamforming optimization towards seamless sensing coverage for a basic bi-static ISAC system, while ensuring that the communication requirements of multiple users equipment (UEs) are satisfied. Towards this end, an optimization problem is formulated to maximize the worst-case sensing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in a prescribed coverage region, subject to the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) requirement for each UE. To gain some insights, we first investigate the special case with one single UE and one single sensing point, for which a closed-from expression of the optimal beamforming is obtained. For the general case with multiple communication UEs and contiguous regional sensing coverage, an efficient algorithm based on successive convex approximation (SCA) is proposed to solve the non-convex beamforming optimization problem. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed design is able to achieve seamless sensing coverage in the prescribed region, while guaranteeing the communication requirements of the UEs.

Channel Knowledge Map (CKM)-Assisted Multi-UAV Wireless Network: CKM Construction and UAV Placement

Channel knowledge map (CKM) has recently emerged to facilitate the placement and trajectory optimization for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications. This paper investigates a CKM-assisted multi-UAV wireless network, by focusing on the construction and utilization of CKMs for multi-UAV placement optimization. First, we consider the CKM construction problem when data measurements for only a limited number of points are available. Towards this end, we exploit a data-driven interpolation technique to construct CKMs to characterize the signal propagation environments. Next, we study the multi-UAV placement optimization problem by utilizing the constructed CKMs, in which the multiple UAVs aim to optimize their placement locations to maximize the weighted sum rate with their respectively associated ground base stations (GBSs). However, the rate function based on the CKMs is generally non-differentiable. To tackle this issue, we propose a novel iterative algorithm based on derivative-free optimization, in which a series of quadratic functions are iteratively constructed to approximate the objective function under a set of interpolation conditions, and accordingly, the UAVs' placement locations are updated by maximizing the approximate function subject to a trust region constraint. Finally, numerical results are presented to validate the proposed design achieves near-optimal performance, but with much lower implementation complexity.

Characterizing the Energy-Efficiency Region of Symbiotic Radio Communications

Symbiotic radio (SR) communication is a promising technology to achieve spectrum- and energy-efficient wireless communication, by enabling passive backscatter devices (BDs) reuse not only the spectrum, but also the power of active primary transmitters (PTs). In this paper, we aim to characterize the energy-efficiency (EE) region of multiple-input single-output (MISO) SR systems, which is defined as all the achievable EE pairs by the active PT and passive BD. To this end, we first derive the maximum individual EE of the PT and BD, respectively, and show that there exists a non-trivial trade-off between these two EEs. To characterize such a trade-off, an optimization problem is formulated to find the Pareto boundary of the EE region by optimizing the transmit beamforming and power allocation. The formulated problem is non-convex and difficult to be directly solved. An efficient algorithm based on successive convex approximation (SCA) is proposed to find a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) solution. Simulation results are provided to show that the proposed algorithm is able to effectively characterize the EE region of SR communication systems.

Delay Alignment Modulation: Enabling Equalization-Free Single-Carrier Communication

This paper proposes a novel broadband transmission technology, termed delay alignment modulation (DAM), which enables the low-complexity equalization-free single-carrier communication, yet without suffering from inter-symbol interference (ISI). The key idea of DAM is to deliberately introduce appropriate delays for information-bearing symbols at the transmitter side, so that after propagating over the time-dispersive channel, all multi-path signal components will arrive at the receiver simultaneously and constructively. We first show that by applying DAM for the basic multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication system, an ISI-free additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) system can be obtained with the simple zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming. Furthermore, the more general DAM scheme is studied with the ISI-maximal-ratio transmission (MRT) and the ISI-minimum mean-square error (MMSE) beamforming. Simulation results are provided to show that when the channel is sparse and/or the antenna dimension is large, DAM not only resolves the notorious practical issues suffered by orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) such as high peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR), severe out-of-band (OOB) emission, and vulnerability to carrier frequency offset (CFO), with low complexity, but also achieves higher spectral efficiency due to the saving of guard interval overhead.

Derivative-Free Placement Optimization for Multi-UAV Wireless Networks with Channel Knowledge Map

This paper studies a multi-UAV wireless network, in which multiple UAV users share the same spectrum to send individual messages to their respectively associated ground base stations (GBSs). The UAV users aim to optimize their locations to maximize the weighted sum rate. While most existing work considers simplified line-of-sight (LoS) or statistic air-to-ground (A2G) channel models, we exploit the location-specific channel knowledge map (CKM) to enhance the placement performance in practice. However, as the CKMs normally contain discrete site- and location-specific channel data without analytic model functions, the corresponding weighted sum rate function becomes non-differentiable in general. In this case, conventional optimization techniques relying on function derivatives are inapplicable to solve the resultant placement optimization problem. To address this issue, we propose a novel iterative algorithm based on the derivative-free optimization. In each iteration, we first construct a quadratic function to approximate the non-differentiable weighted sum rate under a set of interpolation conditions, and then update the UAVs' placement locations by maximizing the approximate quadratic function subject to a trust region constraint. Numerical results show the convergence of the proposed algorithm. It is also shown that the proposed algorithm achieves a weighted sum rate close to the optimal design based on exhaustive search with much lower implementation complexity, and it significantly outperforms the conventional optimization method based on simplified LoS channel models and the heuristic design with each UAV hovering above its associated GBS.

Environment-Aware Hybrid Beamforming by Leveraging Channel Knowledge Map

Hybrid analog/digital beamforming is a promising technique to realize millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems cost-effectively. However, existing hybrid beamforming designs mainly rely on real-time channel training or beam sweeping to find the desired beams, which incurs prohibitive overhead due to a large number of antennas at both the transmitter and receiver with only limited radio frequency (RF) chains. To resolve this challenging issue, in this paper, we propose a new environment-aware hybrid beamforming technique that requires only light real-time training, by leveraging the useful tool of channel knowledge map (CKM) with the user's location information. CKM is a site-specific database, which offers location-specific channel-relevant information to facilitate or even obviate the acquisition of real-time channel state information (CSI). Two specific types of CKM are proposed in this paper for hybrid beamforming design in mmWave massive MIMO systems, namely channel angle map (CAM) and beam index map (BIM). It is shown that compared with existing environment-unaware schemes, the proposed environment-aware hybrid beamforming scheme based on CKM can drastically improve the effective communication rate, even under moderate user location errors, thanks to its great saving of the prohibitive real-time training overhead.

Integrated Sensing and Communication with Delay Alignment Modulation

Delay alignment modulation (DAM) has been recently proposed to enable inter-symbol interference (ISI)-free single-carrier (SC) communication without relying on sophisticated channel equalization. The key idea of DAM is to pre-introduce deliberate symbol delays at the transmitter side, so that all multi-path signal components may arrive at the receiver simultaneously and be superimposed constructively, rather than causing the detrimental ISI. Compared to the classic orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission, DAM has several appealing advantages, including low peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) and high tolerance for Doppler frequency shift, which makes DAM also appealing for radar sensing. Therefore, in this paper, DAM is investigated for the emerging integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) setup. We first derive the output signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) for ISI-free communication and radar sensing, respectively, and then propose an efficient beamforming design for DAM-ISAC to maximize the communication SNR while guaranteeing the sensing performance. The comparison analysis of DAM versus OFDM for ISAC is developed, and it is revealed that DAM enables higher sensing SNR and larger Doppler frequency estimation. Simulation results are provided to show the great potential of DAM for ISAC

Integrated Sensing and Communication with Delay Alignment Modulation: Performance Analysis and Beamforming Optimization

Delay alignment modulation (DAM) has been recently proposed to enable manipulable channel delay spread for efficient single- or multi-carrier communications. In particular, with perfect delay alignment, inter-symbol interference (ISI) can be eliminated even with single-carrier (SC) transmission, without relying on sophisticated channel equalization. The key ideas of DAM are delay pre-compensation and path-based beamforming, so that all multi-path signal components may arrive at the receiver simultaneously and be superimposed constructively, rather than causing the detrimental ISI. Compared to the classic orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission, DAM-enabled SC communication has several appealing advantages, including low peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) and high tolerance for Doppler frequency shift, which renders DAM also appealing for radar sensing. Therefore, in this paper, DAM is investigated for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. We first study the output signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) for ISI-free SC communication and radar sensing, and then derive the closed-form expressions for DAM-based sensing in terms of the ambiguity function (AF) and integrated sidelobe ratio (ISR). Furthermore, we study the beamforming design problem for DAM-based ISAC to maximize the communication SNR while guaranteeing the sensing performance in terms of the sensing SNR and ISR. Finally, we provide performance comparison between DAM and OFDM for ISAC, and it is revealed that DAM signal may achieve better communication and sensing performance, thanks to its low PAPR, reduced guard interval overhead, as well as higher tolerance for Doppler frequency shift. Simulation results are provided to show the great potential of DAM for ISAC.

ISAC from the Sky: UAV Trajectory Design for Joint Communication and Target Localization

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as aerial base stations (BSs) are able to provide not only the communication service to ground users, but also the sensing functionality to localize targets of interests. In this paper, we consider an airborne integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system where a UAV, which acts both as a communication BS and a mono-static radar, flies over a given area to transmit downlink signal to a ground communication user. In the meantime, the same transmitted signal is also exploited for mono-static radar sensing. We aim to optimize the UAV trajectory, such that the performance for both communication and sensing (C$\&$S) is explicitly considered. In particular, we first formulate the trajectory design problem into a weighted optimization problem, where a flexible performance trade-off between C$\&$S is achieved. As a step forward, a multi-stage trajectory design approach is proposed to improve the target estimation accuracy. While the resultant optimization problem is difficult to solve directly, we develop an iterative algorithm to obtain a locally optimal solution. Finally, numerical results show that the target estimation error obtained by the trade-off approach is about an order of magnitude better than a communication-only approach with a slight decrease on communication performance.

Mechanism, measurement, and quantification of stress in decision process: a model based systematic-review protocol

Every human action begins with decision-making. Stress is a significant source of biases that can influence human decision-making. In order to understand the relationship between stress and decision-making, stress quantification is fundamental. Different methods of measuring and quantifying stress in decision-making have been described in the literature while an up-to-date systematic review of the existing methods is lacking. Moreover, mental stress, mental effort, cognitive workload, and workload are often used interchangeably but should be distinguished to enable in-depth investigations of decision-mechanisms. Our objectives are to clarify stress related concepts and review the measurement, quantification, and application of stress during decision making activities.

MIMO Symbiotic Radio with Massive Passive Devices: Asymptotic Analysis and Precoding Optimization

Symbiotic radio has emerged as a promising technology for spectrum- and energy-efficient wireless communications, where the passive secondary backscatter devices (BDs) reuse not only the spectrum but also the power of the active primary users to transmit their own information. In return, the primary communication links can be enhanced by the additional multipaths created by the BDs. This is known as the mutualism relationship of symbiotic radio. However, due to the severe double-fading attenuation of the passive backscattering links, the enhancement of the primary link provided by one single BD is extremely limited. To address this issue and enable full mutualism of symbiotic radio, in this paper, we study multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) symbiotic radio communication systems with massive BDs. We first derive the achievable rates of the primary active communication and secondary passive communication, and then consider the asymptotic regime as the number of BDs goes large, for which closed-form expressions are derived to reveal the relationship between the primary and secondary communication rates. Furthermore, the precoding optimization problem is studied to maximize the primary communication rate while guaranteeing that the secondary communication rate is no smaller than a certain threshold. Simulation results are provided to validate our theoretical studies.

Modular Extremely Large-Scale Array Communication: Near-Field Modelling and Performance Analysis

This paper investigates wireless communications based on a new antenna array architecture, termed modular extremely large-scale array (XL-array), where an extremely large number of antenna elements are regularly arranged on a common platform in a modular manner. Each module consists of a flexible/moderate number of antenna elements, and different modules are separated with an inter-module spacing that is typically much larger than the inter-element spacing/signal wavelength for ease of deployment. By properly modelling the variations of signal phase, amplitude and projected aperture across different array modules/elements, we develop the new channel model and analyze the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance of the modular XL-array based communications. Under the practical non-uniform spherical wave (NUSW) model, the closed-form expression of the maximum achievable SNR is derived in terms of key geometric parameters, including the total planar array size, module separation distances along each dimension, as well as the user's location in the three-dimensional (3D) space. Besides, the asymptotic SNR scaling laws are revealed as the number of modules along different dimensions goes to infinity. Moreover, we show that our developed near-field modelling and performance analysis include the existing ones for the collocated XL-array, the far-field uniform plane wave (UPW) model, as well as the one-dimensional (1D) modular extremely large-scale uniform linear array (XL-ULA) as special cases. Extensive simulation results are provided to validate our obtained results.

Near-Field Modelling and Performance Analysis of Modular Extremely Large-Scale Array Communications

This letter studies a new array architecture, termed as modular extremely large-scale array (XL-array), for which a large number of array elements are arranged in a modular manner. Each module consists of a moderate number of array elements and the modules are regularly arranged with the inter-module space typically much larger than signal wavelength to cater to the actual mounting structure. We study the mathematical modelling and conduct the performance analysis for modular XL-array communications, by considering the non-uniform spherical wave (NUSW) characteristic that is more suitable than the conventional uniform plane wave (UPW) assumption for physically large arrays. A closed-form expression is derived for the maximum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in terms of the geometries of the modular XL-array, including the total array size and module separation, as well as the user's location. The asymptotic SNR scaling law is revealed as the size of modular array goes to infinity. Furthermore, we show that the developed modelling and performance analysis include the existing results for collocated XL-array or far-field UPW assumption as special cases. Numerical results demonstrate the importance of near-field modelling for modular XL-array communications since it leads to significantly different results from the conventional far-field UPW modelling.

Near-Field Spatial Correlation for Extremely Large-Scale Array Communications

Extremely large-scale array (XL-array) communications correspond to systems whose antenna sizes are so large that the scatterers and/or users may no longer be located in the far-field region. By discarding the conventional far-field uniform plane wave (UPW) assumption, this letter studies the near-field spatial correlation of XL-array communications, by taking into account the more generic non-uniform spherical wave (NUSW) characteristics. It is revealed that different from the far-field channel spatial correlation which only depends on the power angular spectrum (PAS), the near-field spatial correlation depends on the scattered power distribution not just characterized by their arriving angles, but also by the scatterers' distances, which is termed as power location spectrum (PLS). A novel integral expression is derived for the near-field spatial correlation in terms of the scatterers' location distribution, which includes the far-field spatial correlation as a special case. The result shows that different from the far-field case, the near-field spatial correlation no longer exhibits spatial stationarity in general, since the correlation coefficient for each pair of antennas depends on their specific positions, rather than their relative distance only. To gain further insights, we propose a generalized one-ring model for scatterer distribution, by allowing the ring center to be flexibly located rather than coinciding with the array center as in the conventional one-ring model. Numerical results are provided to show the necessity of the near-field spatial correlation modelling for XL-array communications.

Rate-Region Characterization and Channel Estimation for Cell-Free Symbiotic Radio Communications

Cell-free massive MIMO and symbiotic radio communication have been recently proposed as the promising beyond fifth-generation (B5G) networking architecture and transmission technology, respectively. To reap the benefits of both, this paper studies cell-free symbiotic radio communication systems, where a number of cell-free access points (APs) cooperatively send primary information to a receiver, and simultaneously support the passive backscattering communication of the secondary backscatter device (BD). We first derive the achievable communication rates of the active primary user and passive secondary user under the assumption of perfect channel state information (CSI), based on which the transmit beamforming of the cellfree APs is optimized to characterize the achievable rate-region of cell-free symbiotic communication systems. Furthermore, to practically acquire the CSI of the active and passive channels, we propose an efficient channel estimation method based on two-phase uplink-training, and the achievable rate-region taking into account CSI estimation errors are further characterized. Simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of our proposed beamforming and channel estimation methods.

Environment-Aware and Training-Free Beam Alignment for mmWave Massive MIMO via Channel Knowledge Map

Millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system is expected to achieve enormous transmission rate, provided that the transmit and receive beams are properly aligned with the MIMO channel. However, existing beam alignment techniques rely on either channel estimation or beam sweeping, which incur prohibitively high training overhead, especially for future wireless systems with further increased antenna dimensions and more stringent requirement on cost-effective hardware architectures. In this paper, we propose a new beam alignment technique, which is environment-aware and training-free, by utilizing the emerging concept of channel knowledge map (CKM), together with the user location information that is readily available in contemporary wireless systems. CKM is a site-specific database, tagged with the transmitter/receiver locations, which contains useful channel information to facilitate or even obviate real-time channel state information (CSI) acquistion. Two instances of CKM are proposed for beam alignment in mmWave massive MIMO systems, namely channel path map (CPM) and beam index map (BIM). It is shown that compared with existing training-based beam alignment schemes, the proposed CKM-enabled environment-aware beam alignment is able to drastically improve the effective communication rate, even with moderate user location errors, thanks to its significant saving of the prohibitive training overhead.

Achievable Rate Region of MISO Interference Channel Aided by Intelligent Reflecting Surface

This paper investigates the achievable rate region of the multiple-input single-output (MISO) interference channel aided by intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs). We exploit the the additional design degree of freedom provided by the coordinated IRSs to enhance the desired signal and suppress interference so as to enlarge the achievable rate region of the interference channel. To this end, we jointly optimize the active transmit beamforming at the transmitters and passive reflective beamforming at the IRSs, subject to the constant modulus constraints of reflective beamforming vectors. To address the non-convex optimization problem, we propose an iterative algorithm to optimize the transmit beamforming via second-order cone program (SOCP) and the reflective beamforming via the semi-definite relaxation (SDR). Numerical results demonstrate that the performance of the IRS-aided interference channel with the proposed algorithm can significantly outperform the conventional interference channel without IRS.

An Overview on Integrated Localization and Communication Towards 6G

While the 5G cellular system is being deployed worldwide, researchers have started the investigation of the 6G mobile communication networks. Although the essential requirements and key usage scenarios of 6G are yet to be defined, it is believed that 6G should be able to provide intelligent and ubiquitous wireless connectivity with Tbps data rate and sub-millisecond latency over 3D network coverage. To achieve such goals, acquiring accurate location information of the mobile terminals is becoming extremely useful, not only for location-based services but also for improving wireless communication performance in various ways such as channel estimation, beam alignment, medium access control, routing, and network optimization. On the other hand, the advancement of communication technologies also brings new opportunities to greatly improve the localization performance, as exemplified by the anticipated centimeter-level localization accuracy in 6G by ultra massive MIMO and mmWave technologies. In this regard, a unified study on integrated localization and communication (ILAC) is necessary to unlock the full potential of wireless networks for the best utilization of network infrastructure and radio resources for dual purposes. While there are extensive literatures on wireless localization or communications separately, the research on ILAC is still in its infancy. Therefore, this article aims to give a tutorial overview on ILAC towards 6G wireless networks. After a holistic survey on wireless localization basics, we present the state-of-the-art results on how wireless localization and communication inter-play with each other in various network layers, together with the main architectures and techniques for localization and communication co-design in current 2D and future 3D networks with aerial-ground integration. Finally, we outline some promising future research directions for ILAC.

Enabling Panoramic Full-Angle Reflection via Aerial Intelligent Reflecting Surface

This paper proposes a new three dimensional (3D) networking architecture enabled by aerial intelligent reflecting surface (AIRS) to achieve panoramic signal reflection from the sky. Compared to the conventional terrestrial IRS, AIRS not only enjoys higher deployment flexibility, but also is able to achieve 360$^\circ$ panoramic full-angle reflection and requires fewer reflections in general due to its higher likelihood of having line of sight (LoS) links with the ground nodes. We focus on the problem to maximize the worst-case signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in a given coverage area by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming, AIRS placement and phase shifts. The formulated problem is non-convex and the optimization variables are coupled with each other in an intricate manner. To tackle this problem, we first consider the special case of single-location SNR maximization to gain useful insights, for which the optimal solution is obtained in closed-form. Then for the general case of area coverage, an efficient suboptimal solution is proposed by exploiting the similarity between phase shifts optimization for IRS and analog beamforming for the conventional phase array. Numerical results show that the proposed design can achieve significant performance gain than heuristic AIRS deployment schemes.

Wireless communication involving unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is expected to play an important role in future wireless networks. However, different from conventional terrestrial communication systems, UAVs typically have rather limited onboard energy on one hand, and require additional flying energy consumption on the other hand, which renders energy-efficient UAV communication with smart energy expenditure of paramount importance. In this paper, via extensive flight experiments, we aim to firstly validate the recently derived theoretical energy model for rotary-wing UAVs, and then develop a general model for those complicated flight scenarios where rigorous theoretical model derivation is quite challenging, if not impossible. Specifically, we first investigate how UAV power consumption varies with its flying speed for the simplest straight-and-level flight. With about 12,000 valid power-speed data points collected, we first apply the model-based curve fitting to obtain the modelling parameters based on the theoretical closed-form energy model in the existing literature. In addition, in order to exclude the potential bias caused by the theoretical energy model, the obtained measurement data is also trained using a model-free deep neural network. It is found that the obtained curve from both methods can match quite well with the theoretical energy model. Next, we further extend the study to arbitrary 2-dimensional (2-D) flight, where, to our best knowledge, no rigorous theoretical derivation is available for the closed-form energy model as a function of its flying speed, direction, and acceleration. To fill the gap, we first propose a heuristic energy model for these more complicated cases, and then provide experimental validation based on the measurement results for circular level flight.

Minimum-Latency FEC Design with Delayed Feedback: Mathematical Modeling and Efficient Algorithms

In this paper, we consider the packet-level forward error correction (FEC) code design, without feedback or with delayed feedback, for achieving the minimum end-to-end latency, i.e., the latency between the time when packet is generated at the source and its \emph{in-order delivery} to the application layer of the destination. We first show that the minimum-latency FEC design problem can be modeled as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), and hence the optimal code construction can be obtained by solving the corresponding POMDP. However, solving the POMDP optimally is in general difficult unless the size is very small. To this end, we propose an efficient heuristic algorithm, namely the majority vote policy, for obtaining a high quality approximate solution. We also derive the tight lower and upper bounds of the optimal state values of this POMDP, based on which a more sophisticated D-step search algorithm is implemented for obtaining near-optimal solutions. The simulation results show that the proposed code designs via solving the POMDP, either with the majority vote policy or the D-step search algorithm, strictly outperform the existing schemes, in both cases, without or with only delayed feedback.

Multi-Antenna UAV Data Harvesting: Joint Trajectory and Communication Optimization

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled communication is a promising technology to extend coverage and enhance throughput for traditional terrestrial wireless communication systems. In this paper, we consider a UAV-enabled wireless sensor network (WSN), where a multi-antenna UAV is dispatched to collect data from a group of sensor nodes (SNs). The objective is to maximize the minimum data collection rate from all SNs via jointly optimizing their transmission scheduling and power allocations as well as the trajectory of the UAV, subject to the practical constraints on the maximum transmit power of the SNs and the maximum speed of the UAV. The formulated optimization problem is challenging to solve as it involves non-convex constraints and discrete-value variables. To draw useful insight, we first consider the special case of the formulated problem by ignoring the UAV speed constraint and optimally solve it based on the Lagrange duality method. It is shown that for this relaxed problem, the UAV should hover above a finite number of optimal locations with different durations in general. Next, we address the general case of the formulated problem where the UAV speed constraint is considered and propose a traveling salesman problem (TSP)-based trajectory initialization, where the UAV sequentially visits the locations obtained in the relaxed problem with minimum flying time. Given this initial trajectory, we then find the corresponding transmission scheduling and power allocations of the SNs and further optimize the UAV trajectory by applying the block coordinate descent (BCD) and successive convex approximation (SCA) techniques. Finally, numerical results are provided to illustrate the spectrum and energy efficiency gains of the proposed scheme for multi-antenna UAV data harvesting, as compared to benchmark schemes.

Simultaneous Navigation and Radio Mapping for Cellular-Connected UAV with Deep Reinforcement Learning

Cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is a promising technology to unlock the full potential of UAVs in the future. However, how to achieve ubiquitous three-dimensional (3D) communication coverage for the UAVs in the sky is a new challenge. In this paper, we tackle this challenge by a new coverage-aware navigation approach, which exploits the UAV's controllable mobility to design its navigation/trajectory to avoid the cellular BSs' coverage holes while accomplishing their missions. We formulate an UAV trajectory optimization problem to minimize the weighted sum of its mission completion time and expected communication outage duration, and propose a new solution approach based on the technique of deep reinforcement learning (DRL). To further improve the performance, we propose a new framework called simultaneous navigation and radio mapping (SNARM), where the UAV's signal measurement is used not only for training the deep Q network (DQN) directly, but also to create a radio map that is able to predict the outage probabilities at all locations in the area of interest. This thus enables the generation of simulated UAV trajectories and predicting their expected returns, which are then used to further train the DQN via Dyna technique, thus greatly improving the learning efficiency.

Time-Weighted Coverage of Integrated Aerial and Ground Networks for Post-Disaster Communications

In this paper, we propose a new three dimensional (3D) networking architecture with integrated aerial and ground base stations (BSs) for swift post-disaster communication recovery. By exploiting their respective advantages in terms of response time, coverage area, and operational duration, the proposed network is highly heterogeneous, consisting of sustained ground BSs, ground-vehicle mounted BSs, dropping-off BSs and flying BSs. To reflect the importance of swift communication recovery and the dynamics of coverage area in post-disaster scenarios, we propose a new performance metric called ``time-weighted coverage}", which is an integration of the achieved communication coverage area multiplied with a weighting function over time. By choosing different weighting functions, the network deployment can be designed to achieve tradeoffs between the ``swift communication recovery" and ``stable communication coverage". Simulation results show that the proposed integrated aerial and ground network has high implementation flexibility and it can significantly enhance the communication coverage compared with the conventional approaches.

Towards Environment-Aware 6G Communications via Channel Knowledge Map

This article proposes the concept of channel knowledge map (CKM) as an enabler towards environment-aware wireless communications. CKM is a site-specific database, tagged with the locations of the transmitters and/or receivers, that contains whatever channel-related information useful to enhance environmental-awareness and facilitate or even obviate sophisticated real-time channel state information (CSI) acquisition. Therefore, CKM is expected to play an important role for 6G networks targeting for super high capacity, extremely low latency, and ultra-massive connectivity, by offering potential solutions to practical challenges brought by the drastically increased channel dimensions and training overhead. In this article, the motivations of environmental-awareness enabled by CKM are firstly discussed, followed by the key techniques to build and utilize CKM. In particular, it is highlighted that CKM is especially appealing for four channel types: channels for yet-to-reach locations, channels for non-cooperative nodes, channels with large dimensions, and channels with severe hardware/processing limitations. Two case studies with extensive numerical results are presented to demonstrate the great potential of environment-aware communications enabled by CKM.

Wireless Communications with Programmable Metasurface: New Paradigms, Opportunities, and Challenges on Transceiver Design

Many emerging technologies, such as ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (UM-MIMO), terahertz (THz) communications are under active discussion as promising technologies to support the extremely high access rate and superior network capacity in the future sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication systems. However, such technologies are still facing many challenges for practical implementation. In particular, UM-MIMO and THz communication require extremely large number of radio frequency (RF) chains, and hence suffering from prohibitive hardware cost and complexity. In this article, we introduce a new paradigm to address the above issues, namely wireless communication enabled by programmable metasurfaces, by exploiting the powerful capability of metasurfaces in manipulating electromagnetic waves. We will first introduce the basic concept of programmable metasurfaces, followed by the promising paradigm shift in future wireless communication systems enabled by programmable metasurfaces. In particular, we propose two prospective paradigms of applying programmable metasurfaces in wireless transceivers: namely RF chain-free transmitter and space-down-conversion receiver, which both have great potential to simplify the architecture and reduce the hardware cost of future wireless transceivers. Furthermore, we present the design architectures, preliminary experimental results and main advantages of these new paradigms and discuss their potential opportunities and challenges toward ultra-massive 6G communications with low hardware complexity, low cost, and high energy efficiency.

Wireless Communications with Programmable Metasurface: Transceiver Design and Experimental Results

Metasurfaces have drawn significant attentions due to their superior capability in tailoring electromagnetic waves with a wide frequency range, from microwave to visible light. Recently, programmable metasurfaces have demonstrated the ability of manipulating the amplitude or phase of electromagnetic waves in a programmable manner in real time, which renders them especially appealing in the applications of wireless communications. To practically demonstrate the feasibility of programmable metasurfaces in future communication systems, in this paper, we design and realize a novel metasurface-based wireless communication system. By exploiting the dynamically controllable property of programmable metasurface, we firstly introduce the fundamental principle of the metasurface-based wireless communication system design. We then present the design, implementation and experimental evaluation of the proposed metasurface-based wireless communication system with a prototype, which realizes single carrier quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) transmission over the air. In the developed prototype, the phase of the reflected electromagnetic wave of programmable metasurface is directly manipulated in real time according to the baseband control signal, which achieves 2.048 Mbps data transfer rate with video streaming transmission over the air. Experimental result is provided to compare the performance of the proposed metasurface-based architecture against the conventional one. With the slight increase of the transmit power by 5 dB, the same bit error rate (BER) performance can be achieved as the conventional system in the absence of channel coding. Such a result is encouraging considering that the metasurface-based system has the advantages of low hardware cost and simple structure, thus leading to a promising new architecture for wireless communications.

Then, we focus on discussing the new communication and signal processing techniques that can be applied to tackle these challenges. Topics discussed include energy harvester modeling, energy beamforming for WPT, channel acquisition, power region characterization in multi-user WPT, waveform design with linear and non-linear energy receiver model, safety and health issues of WPT, massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) and millimeter wave (mmWave) enabled WPT, wireless charging control, and wireless power and communication systems co-design. Cost-Effective Millimeter Wave Communications with Lens Antenna Array

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication is a promising technology for the fifth-generation (5G) wireless system. However, the large number of antennas used and the wide signal bandwidth in mmWave systems render the conventional multi-antenna techniques increasingly costly in terms of signal processing complexity, hardware implementation, and power consumption. In this article, we investigate cost-effective mmWave communications by first providing an overview of the main existing techniques that offer different trade-offs between performance and cost, and then focusing our discussion on a promising new technique based on the advanced lens antenna array. It is revealed that by exploiting the angle-dependent energy focusing property of lens arrays, together with the angular sparsity of the mmWave channels, mmWave lens-antenna system is able to achieve the capacity-optimal performance with very few radio-frequency (RF) chains and using the low-complexity single-carrier transmission, even for wide-band frequency-selective channels. Numerical results show that the lens-based system significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art designs for mmWave systems in both spectrum efficiency and energy efficiency.

Energy-Efficient UAV Communication with Trajectory Optimization

Wireless communication with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is a promising technology for future communication systems. In this paper, we study energy-efficient UAV communication with a ground terminal via optimizing the UAV's trajectory, a new design paradigm that jointly considers both the communication throughput and the UAV's energy consumption. To this end, we first derive a theoretical model on the propulsion energy consumption of fixed-wing UAVs as a function of the UAV's flying speed, direction and acceleration, based on which the energy efficiency of UAV communication is defined. Then, for the case of unconstrained trajectory optimization, we show that both the rate-maximization and energy-minimization designs lead to vanishing energy efficiency and thus are energy-inefficient in general. Next, we introduce a practical circular UAV trajectory, under which the UAV's flight radius and speed are optimized to maximize the energy efficiency for communication. Furthermore, an efficient design is proposed for maximizing the UAV's energy efficiency with general constraints on its trajectory, including its initial/final locations and velocities, as well as maximum speed and acceleration. Numerical results show that the proposed designs achieve significantly higher energy efficiency for UAV communication as compared with other benchmark schemes.

Multi-User Millimeter Wave MIMO with Full-Dimensional Lens Antenna Array

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication by utilizing lens antenna arrays is a promising technique for realizing cost-effective 5G wireless systems with large MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) but only limited radio frequency (RF) chains. This paper studies an uplink multi-user mmWave single-sided lens MIMO system, where only the base station (BS) is equipped with a full-dimensional (FD) lens antenna array with both elevation and azimuth angle resolution capabilities, and each mobile station (MS) employs the conventional uniform planar array (UPA) without the lens. By exploiting the angle-dependent energy focusing property of the lens antenna array at the BS as well as the multi-path sparsity of mmWave channels, we propose a low-complexity path division multiple access (PDMA) scheme, which enables virtually interference-free multi-user communications when the angle of arrivals (AoAs) of all MS multi-path signals are sufficiently separable at the BS. To this end, a new technique called path delay compensation is proposed at the BS to effectively transform the multi-user frequency-selective MIMO channels to parallel frequency-flat small-size MIMO channels for different MSs, for each of which the low-complexity single-carrier(SC) transmission is applied. For general scenarios with insufficient AoA separations, analog beamforming at the MSs and digital combining at the BS are jointly designed to maximize the achievable sum-rate of the MSs based on their effective MIMO channels resulting from path delay compensation. In addition, we propose a new and efficient channel estimation scheme tailored for PDMA, which requires negligible training overhead in practical mmWave systems and yet leads to comparable performance as that based on perfect channel state information (CSI).

Placement Optimization of UAV-Mounted Mobile Base Stations

In terrestrial communication networks without fixed infrastructure, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-mounted mobile base stations (MBSs) provide an efficient solution to achieve wireless connectivity. This letter aims to minimize the number of MBSs needed to provide wireless coverage for a group of distributed ground terminals (GTs), ensuring that each GT is within the communication range of at least one MBS. We propose a polynomial-time algorithm with successive MBS placement, where the MBSs are placed sequentially starting on the area perimeter of the uncovered GTs along a spiral path towards the center, until all GTs are covered. Each MBS is placed to cover as many uncovered GTs as possible, with higher priority given to the GTs on the boundary to reduce the occurrence of outlier GTs that each may require one dedicated MBS for its coverage. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm performs favorably compared to other schemes in terms of the total number of required MBSs and/or time complexity.

Throughput Maximization for Mobile Relaying Systems

Relaying is an effective technique to achieve reliable wireless connectivity in harsh communication environment. However, most of the existing relaying schemes are based on relays with fixed locations, or \emph{static relaying}. In this paper, we consider a novel \emph{mobile relaying} technique, where the relay nodes are assumed to be capable of moving at high speed. Compared to static relaying, mobile relaying offers a new degree of freedom for performance enhancement via careful relay trajectory design. We study the throughput maximization problem in mobile relaying systems by optimizing the source/relay transmit power along with the relay trajectory, subject to practical mobility constraints (on the relay speed and initial/final relay locations), as well as the \emph{information-causality constraint} at the relay owing to its decode-store-and-forward (DSF) strategy. It is shown that for fixed relay trajectory, the throughput-optimal source/relay power allocations over time follow a "staircase" water filling (WF) structure, with \emph{non-increasing} and \emph{non-decreasing} water levels at the source and relay, respectively. On the other hand, with given power allocations, the throughput can be further improved by optimizing the relay trajectory via successive convex optimization. An iterative algorithm is thus proposed to optimize the power allocations and relay trajectory alternately. Furthermore, for the special case with free initial and final relay locations, the jointly optimal power allocation and relay trajectory are derived. Numerical results show that by optimizing the trajectory of the relay and power allocations adaptive to its induced channel variation, mobile relaying is able to achieve significant throughput gains over the conventional static relaying.

Throughput Maximization for Mobile Relaying Systems

This paper studies a novel mobile relaying technique, where relays of high mobility are employed to assist the communications from source to destination. By exploiting the predictable channel variations introduced by relay mobility, we study the throughput maximization problem in a mobile relaying system via dynamic rate and power allocations at the source and relay. An optimization problem is formulated for a finite time horizon, subject to an information-causality constraint, which results from the data buffering employed at the relay. It is found that the optimal power allocations across the different time slots follow a "stair-case" water filling (WF) structure, with non-increasing and non-decreasing water levels at the source and relay, respectively. For the special case where the relay moves unidirectionally from source to destination, the optimal power allocations reduce to the conventional WF with constant water levels. Numerical results show that with appropriate trajectory design, mobile relaying is able to achieve tremendous throughput gain over the conventional static relaying.

Wireless Communications with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles: Opportunities and Challenges

Wireless communication systems that include unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) promise to provide cost-effective wireless connectivity for devices without infrastructure coverage. Compared to terrestrial communications or those based on high-altitude platforms (HAPs), on-demand wireless systems with low-altitude UAVs are in general faster to deploy, more flexibly re-configured, and are likely to have better communication channels due to the presence of short-range line-of-sight (LoS) links. However, the utilization of highly mobile and energy-constrained UAVs for wireless communications also introduces many new challenges. In this article, we provide an overview of UAV-aided wireless communications, by introducing the basic networking architecture and main channel characteristics, highlighting the key design considerations as well as the new opportunities to be exploited.

Wireless Information Surveillance via Proactive Eavesdropping with Spoofing Relay

Wireless information surveillance, by which suspicious wireless communications are closely monitored by legitimate agencies, is an integral part of national security. To enhance the information surveillance capability, we propose in this paper a new proactive eavesdropping approach via a spoofing relay, where the legitimate monitor operates in a full-duplex manner with simultaneous eavesdropping and spoofing relaying to vary the source transmission rate in favor of the eavesdropping performance. To this end, a power splitting receiver is proposed, where the signal received at each antenna of the legitimate monitor is split into two parts for information eavesdropping and spoofing relaying, respectively. We formulate an optimization problem to maximize the achievable eavesdropping rate by jointly optimizing the power splitting ratios and relay beamforming matrix at the multi-antenna monitor. Depending on the suspicious and eavesdropping channel conditions, the optimal solution corresponds to three possible spoofing relay strategies, namely \emph{constructive relaying}, \emph{jamming}, and \emph{simultaneous jamming and destructive relaying}. Numerical results show that the proposed technique significantly improves the eavesdropping rate of the legitimate monitor as compared to the existing passive eavesdropping and jamming-based eavesdropping schemes.

Active Eavesdropping via Spoofing Relay Attack

This paper studies a new active eavesdropping technique via the so-called spoofing relay attack, which could be launched by the eavesdropper to significantly enhance the information leakage rate from the source over conventional passive eaves-dropping. With this attack, the eavesdropper acts as a relay to spoof the source to vary transmission rate in favor of its eavesdropping performance by either enhancing or degrading the effective channel of the legitimate link. The maxi-mum information leakage rate achievable by the eavesdropper and the corresponding optimal operation at the spoofing relay are obtained. It is shown that such a spoofing relay attack could impose new challenges from a physical-layer security perspective since it leads to significantly higher information leakage rate than conventional passive eavesdropping.

In a stock market, the price fluctuations are interactive, that is, one listed company can influence others. In this paper, we seek to study the influence relationships among listed companies by constructing a directed network on the basis of Chinese stock market. This influence network shows distinct topological properties, particularly, a few large companies that can lead the tendency of stock market are recognized. Furthermore, by analyzing the subnetworks of listed companies distributed in several significant economic sectors, it is found that the influence relationships are totally different from one economic sector to another, of which three types of connectivity as well as hub-like listed companies are identified. In addition, the rankings of listed companies obtained from the centrality metrics of influence network are compared with that according to the assets, which gives inspiration to uncover and understand the importance of listed companies in the stock market. These empirical results are meaningful in providing these topological properties of Chinese stock market and economic sectors as well as revealing the interactively influence relationships among listed companies.

Interaction induced decay of a heteronuclear two-atom system

Two-atom systems in small traps are of fundamental interest, first of all for understanding the role of interactions in degenerate cold gases and for the creation of quantum gates in quantum information processing with single-atom traps. One of the key quantities is the inelastic relaxation (decay) time when one of the atoms or both are in a higher hyperfine state. Here we measure this quantity in a heteronuclear system of $^{87}$Rb and $^{85}$Rb in a micro optical trap and demonstrate experimentally and theoretically the presence of both fast and slow relaxation processes, depending on the choice of the initial hyperfine states. The developed experimental method allows us to single out a particular relaxation process and, in this sense, our experiment is a "superclean platform" for collisional physics studies. Our results have also implications for engineering of quantum states via controlled collisions and creation of two-qubit quantum gates.

Millimeter Wave MIMO with Lens Antenna Array: A New Path Division Multiplexing Paradigm

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication is a promising technology for 5G cellular systems. To compensate for the severe path loss in mmWave systems, large antenna arrays are generally used to achieve significant beamforming gains. However, due to the high hardware and power consumption cost associated with radio frequency (RF) chains, it is desirable to achieve the large-antenna gains, but with only limited number of RF chains for mmWave communications. To this end, we study in this paper a new lens antenna array enabled mmWave MIMO communication system. We first show that the array response of the proposed lens antenna array at the receiver/transmitter follows a "sinc" function, where the antenna with the peak response is determined by the angle of arrival (AoA)/departure (AoD) of the received/transmitted signal. By exploiting this unique property of lens antenna arrays along with the multi-path sparsity of mmWave channels, we propose a novel low-cost and capacity-achieving MIMO transmission scheme, termed \emph{orthogonal path division multiplexing (OPDM)}. For channels with insufficiently separated AoAs and/or AoDs, we also propose a simple \emph{path grouping} technique with group-based small-scale MIMO processing to mitigate the inter-path interference. Numerical results are provided to compare the performance of the proposed lens antenna arrays for mmWave MIMO system against that of conventional arrays, under different practical setups. It is shown that the proposed system achieves significant throughput gain as well as complexity and hardware cost reduction, both making it an appealing new paradigm for mmWave MIMO communications.

Optimized Training for Net Energy Maximization in Multi-Antenna Wireless Energy Transfer over Frequency-Selective Channel

This paper studies the training design problem for multiple-input single-output (MISO) wireless energy transfer (WET) systems in frequency-selective channels, where the frequency-diversity and energy-beamforming gains can be both reaped to maximize the transferred energy by efficiently learning the channel state information (CSI) at the energy transmitter (ET). By exploiting channel reciprocity, a new two-phase channel training scheme is proposed to achieve the diversity and beamforming gains, respectively. In the first phase, pilot signals are sent from the energy receiver (ER) over a selected subset of the available frequency sub-bands, through which the ET determines a certain number of "strongest" sub-bands with largest antenna sum-power gains and sends their indices to the ER. In the second phase, the selected sub-bands are further trained by the ER, so that the ET obtains a refined estimate of the corresponding MISO channels to implement energy beamforming for WET. A training design problem is formulated and optimally solved, which takes into account the channel training overhead by maximizing the net harvested energy at the ER, defined as the average harvested energy offset by that consumed in the two-phase training. Moreover, asymptotic analysis is obtained for systems with a large number of antennas or a large number of sub-bands to gain useful insights on the optimal training design. Finally, numerical results are provided to corroborate our analysis and show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme that optimally balances the diversity and beamforming gains achieved in MISO WET systems with limited-energy training.

Wireless Powered Communication Networks: An Overview

Wireless powered communication network (WPCN) is a new networking paradigm where the battery of wireless communication devices can be remotely replenished by means of microwave wireless power transfer (WPT) technology. WPCN eliminates the need of frequent manual battery replacement/recharging, and thus significantly improves the performance over conventional battery-powered communication networks in many aspects, such as higher throughput, longer device lifetime, and lower network operating cost. However, the design and future application of WPCN is essentially challenged by the low WPT efficiency over long distance and the complex nature of joint wireless information and power transfer within the same network. Substream weighting, where the weights determine the prioritization order, can be important in multiple-input multiple-output interference channels. In this letter, a distributed algorithm is proposed for the problem of power minimization subject to weighted SINR constraint. The algorithm is based on two basic features, the well known distributed power control algorithm by Yates in 1995 and a simple linear search to find feasible SINR targets. Degrees of Freedom of the 3-User Rank-Deficient MIMO Interference Channel

We provide the degrees of freedom (DoF) characterization for the $3$-user $M_T\times M_R$ multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel (IC) with \emph{rank-deficient} channel matrices, where each transmitter is equipped with $M_T$ antennas and each receiver with $M_R$ antennas, and the interfering channel matrices from each transmitter to the other two receivers are of ranks $D_1$ and $D_2$, respectively. One important intermediate step for both the converse and achievability arguments is to convert the fully-connected rank-deficient channel into an equivalent partially-connected full-rank MIMO-IC by invertible linear transformations. As such, existing techniques developed for full-rank MIMO-IC can be incorporated to derive the DoF outer and inner bounds for the rank-deficient case. Our result shows that when the interfering links are weak in terms of the channel ranks, i.e., $D_1+D_2\leq \min(M_T, M_R)$, zero forcing is sufficient to achieve the optimal DoF. On the other hand, when $D_1+D_2> \min(M_T, M_R)$, a combination of zero forcing and interference alignment is in general required for DoF optimality. The DoF characterization obtained in this paper unifies several existing results in the literature.

Electromagnetic Lens-focusing Antenna Enabled Massive MIMO: Performance Improvement and Cost Reduction

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques have been recently advanced to tremendously improve the performance of wireless communication networks. However, the use of very large antenna arrays at the base stations (BSs) brings new issues, such as the significantly increased hardware and signal processing costs. In order to reap the enormous gain of massive MIMO and yet reduce its cost to an affordable level, this paper proposes a novel system design by integrating an electromagnetic (EM) lens with the large antenna array, termed the EM-lens enabled MIMO. The EM lens has the capability of focusing the power of an incident wave to a small area of the antenna array, while the location of the focal area varies with the angle of arrival (AoA) of the wave. Therefore, in practical scenarios where the arriving signals from geographically separated users have different AoAs, the EM-lens enabled system provides two new benefits, namely energy focusing and spatial interference rejection. By taking into account the effects of imperfect channel estimation via pilot-assisted training, in this paper we analytically show that the average received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in both the single-user and multiuser uplink transmissions can be strictly improved by the EM-lens enabled system. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the proposed design makes it possible to considerably reduce the hardware and signal processing costs with only slight degradations in performance. To this end, two complexity/cost reduction schemes are proposed, which are small-MIMO processing with parallel receiver filtering applied over subgroups of antennas to reduce the computational complexity, and channel covariance based antenna selection to reduce the required number of radio frequency (RF) chains. Numerical results are provided to corroborate our analysis.

Full-Duplex Wireless-Powered Relay with Self-Energy Recycling

This letter studies a wireless-powered amplify-and-forward relaying system, where an energy-constrained relay node assists the information transmission from the source to the destination using the energy harvested from the source. We propose a novel two-phase protocol for efficient energy transfer and information relaying, in which the relay operates in full-duplex mode with simultaneous energy harvesting and information transmission. Compared with the existing protocols, the proposed design possesses two main advantages: i) it ensures uninterrupted information transmission since no time switching or power splitting is needed at the relay for energy harvesting; ii) it enables the so-called self-energy recycling, i.e., part of the energy (loop energy) that is used for information transmission by the relay can be harvested and reused in addition to the dedicated energy sent by the source. Under the multiple-input single-output (MISO) channel setup, the optimal power allocation and beamforming design at the relay are derived. Numerical results show a significant throughput gain achieved by our proposed design over the existing time switching-based relay protocol.

Optimized Training Design for Multi-Antenna Wireless Energy Transfer in Frequency-Selective Channel

This paper studies the optimal training design for a multiple-input single-output (MISO) wireless energy transfer (WET) system in frequency-selective channels, where the frequency-diversity and energy-beamforming gains can be both achieved by properly learning the channel state information (CSI) at the energy transmitter (ET). By exploiting channel reciprocity, a two-phase channel training scheme is proposed to achieve the diversity and beamforming gains, respectively. In the first phase, pilot signals are sent from the energy receiver (ER) over a selected subset of the available frequency sub-bands, through which the sub-band that exhibits the largest sum-power over all the antennas at the ET is determined and its index is sent back to the ER. In the second phase, the selected sub-band is further trained for the ET to estimate the multi-antenna channel and implement energy beamforming. We propose to maximize the net energy harvested at the ER, which is the total harvested energy offset by that used for the two-phase channel training. The optimal training design, including the number of sub-bands trained and the energy allocated for each of the two phases, is derived.

Optimized Training Design for Wireless Energy Transfer

Radio-frequency (RF) enabled wireless energy transfer (WET), as a promising solution to provide cost-effective and reliable power supplies for energy-constrained wireless networks, has drawn growing interests recently. To overcome the significant propagation loss over distance, employing multi-antennas at the energy transmitter (ET) to more efficiently direct wireless energy to desired energy receivers (ERs), termed \emph{energy beamforming}, is an essential technique for enabling WET. However, the achievable gain of energy beamforming crucially depends on the available channel state information (CSI) at the ET, which needs to be acquired practically. In this paper, we study the design of an efficient channel acquisition method for a point-to-point multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) WET system by exploiting the channel reciprocity, i.e., the ET estimates the CSI via dedicated reverse-link training from the ER. Considering the limited energy availability at the ER, the training strategy should be carefully designed so that the channel can be estimated with sufficient accuracy, and yet without consuming excessive energy at the ER. To this end, we propose to maximize the \emph{net} harvested energy at the ER, which is the average harvested energy offset by that used for channel training. An optimization problem is formulated for the training design over MIMO Rician fading channels, including the subset of ER antennas to be trained, as well as the training time and power allocated. Closed-form solutions are obtained for some special scenarios, based on which useful insights are drawn on when training should be employed to improve the net transferred energy in MIMO WET systems.

A reinterpretation of the metamaterial perfect absorber

We develop a simple treatment of a metamaterial perfect absorber (MPA) based on grating theory. We analytically prove that the condition of MPA requires the existence of two currents, which are nearly out of phase and have almost identical amplitude, akin to a magnetic dipole. Furthermore, we show that non-zero-order Bragg modes within the MPA may consume electromagnetic energy significantly.

Electromagnetic Lens-focusing Antenna Enabled Massive MIMO

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques have been recently advanced to tremendously improve the performance of wireless networks. However, the use of very large antenna arrays brings new issues, such as the significantly increased hardware cost and signal processing cost and complexity. In order to reap the enormous gain of massive MIMO and yet reduce its cost to an affordable level, this paper proposes a novel system design by integrating an electromagnetic (EM) lens with the large antenna array, termed \emph{electromagnetic lens antenna} (ELA). An ELA has the capability of focusing the power of any incident plane wave passing through the EM lens to a small subset of the antenna array, while the location of focal area is dependent on the angle of arrival (AoA) of the wave. As compared to conventional antenna arrays without the EM lens, the proposed system can substantially reduce the number of required radio frequency (RF) chains at the receiver and hence, the implementation costs. In this paper, we investigate the proposed system under a simplified single-user uplink transmission setup, by characterizing the power distribution of the ELA as well as the resulting channel model. Furthermore, by assuming antenna selection used at the receiver, we show the throughput gains of the proposed system over conventional antenna arrays given the same number of selected antennas.

Optimized Transmission with Improper Gaussian Signaling in the K-User MISO Interference Channel

This paper studies the achievable rate region of the K-user Gaussian multiple-input single-output interference channel (MISO-IC) with the interference treated as noise, when improper or circularly asymmetric complex Gaussian signaling is applied. The transmit optimization with improper Gaussian signaling involves not only the signal covariance matrix as in the conventional proper or circularly symmetric Gaussian signaling, but also the signal pseudo-covariance matrix, which is conventionally set to zero in proper Gaussian signaling. By exploiting the separable rate expression with improper Gaussian signaling, we propose a separate transmit covariance and pseudo-covariance optimization algorithm, which is guaranteed to improve the users' achievable rates over the conventional proper Gaussian signaling. In particular, for the pseudo-covariance optimization, we establish the optimality of rank-1 pseudo-covariance matrices, given the optimal rank-1 transmit covariance matrices for achieving the Pareto boundary of the rate region. Based on this result, we are able to greatly reduce the number of variables in the pseudo-covariance optimization problem and thereby develop an efficient solution by applying the celebrated semidefinite relaxation (SDR) technique. Finally, we extend the result to the Gaussian MISO broadcast channel (MISO-BC) with improper Gaussian signaling or so-called widely linear transmit precoding.

Plasmonic metamaterial enhanced axionic magnetoelectric effect

Axionic electrodynamics predicts many peculiar magnetoelectric-based properties. Hitherto, simple structures such as one-dimensional multilayers were employed to explore these axionic magnetoelectric responses, and Fabry-Pérot interference mechanism was frequently applied to augment these effects. In this Letter, we propose a new mechanism, metamaterial-enhanced axionic magnetoelectric response, by taking advantage of intense enhancement of localized electromagnetic fields associated with plasmonic resonances. Through numerical simulations, we show that plasmonic metamaterial can enhance axionic magnetoelectric effect by two orders of magnitude.

Sub-Stream Fairness and Numerical Correctness in MIMO Interference Channels

Stream fairness, fairness between all streams in the system, is a more restrictive condition than sub-stream fairness, fairness between all streams of each user. Thus sub-stream fairness alleviates utility loss as well as complexity and overhead compared to stream fairness. Moreover, depending on algorithmic parameters, conventional algorithms including distributed interference alignment (DIA) may not provide sub-stream fairness, and generate sub-streams with poor signal-to-interference plus noise ratios (SINRs), thus with poor bit error rates (BERs). To this end, we propose a distributed power control algorithm to render sub-stream fairness in the system, and establish initiatory connections between sub-stream SINRs, BERs, and rates. Algorithms have particular responses to parameters. In the paper, important algorithmic parameters are analyzed to exhibit numerical correctness in benchmarking. The distinction between separate filtering schemes that design each stream of a user separately and group filtering schemes that jointly design the streams of a user is also underscored in the paper. Finally, the power control law used in the proposed algorithm is proven to linearly converge to a unique fixed-point, and the algorithm is shown to achieve feasible SINR targets.

Sub-Stream Fairness and Numerical Correctness in MIMO Interference Channels

Signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) and rate fairness in a system are substantial quality-of-service (QoS) metrics. The acclaimed SINR maximization (max-SINR) algorithm does not achieve fairness between user's streams, i.e., sub-stream fairness is not achieved. To this end, we propose a distributed power control algorithm to render sub-stream fairness in the system. Sub-stream fairness is a less restrictive design metric than stream fairness (i.e., fairness between all streams) thus sum-rate degradation is milder. Algorithmic parameters can significantly differentiate the results of numerical algorithms. A complete picture for comparison of algorithms can only be depicted by varying these parameters. For example, a predetermined iteration number or a negligible increment in the sum-rate can be the stopping criteria of an algorithm. While the distributed interference alignment (DIA) can reasonably achieve sub-stream fairness for the later, the imbalance between sub-streams increases as the preset iteration number decreases. Thus comparison of max-SINR and DIA with a low preset iteration number can only depict a part of the picture. We analyze such important parameters and their effects on SINR and rate metrics to exhibit numerical correctness in executing the benchmarks. Finally, we propose group filtering schemes that jointly design the streams of a user in contrast to max-SINR scheme that designs each stream of a user separately.

Terahertz metamaterials for linear polarization conversion and anomalous refraction

Polarization is one of the basic properties of electromagnetic waves conveying valuable information in signal transmission and sensitive measurements. Conventional methods for advanced polarization control impose demanding requirements on material properties and attain only limited performance. Here, we demonstrate ultrathin, broadband, and highly efficient metamaterial-based terahertz polarization converters that are capable of rotating a linear polarization state into its orthogonal one. Based on these results we create metamaterial structures capable of realizing near-perfect anomalous refraction. Our work opens new opportunities for creating high performance photonic devices and enables emergent metamaterial functionalities for applications in the technologically difficult terahertz frequency regime.

Transmit Optimization with Improper Gaussian Signaling for Interference Channels

This paper studies the achievable rates of Gaussian interference channels with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), when improper or circularly asymmetric complex Gaussian signaling is applied. For the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output interference channel (MIMO-IC) with the interference treated as Gaussian noise, we show that the user's achievable rate can be expressed as a summation of the rate achievable by the conventional proper or circularly symmetric complex Gaussian signaling in terms of the users' transmit covariance matrices, and an additional term, which is a function of both the users' transmit covariance and pseudo-covariance matrices. The additional degrees of freedom in the pseudo-covariance matrix, which is conventionally set to be zero for the case of proper Gaussian signaling, provide an opportunity to further improve the achievable rates of Gaussian MIMO-ICs by employing improper Gaussian signaling. To this end, this paper proposes widely linear precoding, which efficiently maps proper information-bearing signals to improper transmitted signals at each transmitter for any given pair of transmit covariance and pseudo-covariance matrices. In particular, for the case of two-user Gaussian single-input single-output interference channel (SISO-IC), we propose a joint covariance and pseudo-covariance optimization algorithm with improper Gaussian signaling to achieve the Pareto-optimal rates. By utilizing the separable structure of the achievable rate expression, an alternative algorithm with separate covariance and pseudo-covariance optimization is also proposed, which guarantees the rate improvement over conventional proper Gaussian signaling.

Breaking Out The XML MisMatch Trap

In keyword search, when user cannot get what she wants, query refinement is needed and reason can be various. We first give a thorough categorization of the reason, then focus on solving one category of query refinement problem in the context of XML keyword search, where what user searches for does not exist in the data. We refer to it as the MisMatch problem in this paper. Then we propose a practical way to detect the MisMatch problem and generate helpful suggestions to users. Our approach can be viewed as a post-processing job of query evaluation, and has three main features: (1) it adopts both the suggested queries and their sample results as the output to user, helping user judge whether the MisMatch problem is solved without consuming all query results; (2) it is portable in the sense that it can work with any LCA-based matching semantics and orthogonal to the choice of result retrieval method adopted; (3) it is lightweight in the way that it occupies a very small proportion of the whole query evaluation time. Extensive experiments on three real datasets verify the effectiveness, efficiency and scalability of our approach. An online XML keyword search engine called XClear that embeds the MisMatch problem detector and suggester has been built.

Classical theory of second-harmonic generation from magnetic metamaterials

Strong second-harmonic generation has recently been experimentally observed from metamaterials consisting of periodic arrays of metal split ring resonators with an effective negative magnetic permeability [Science, 313, 502 (2006)]. To explore the underlying physical mechanism, a classical model derived from microscopic theory is employed here. The quasi-free electrons inside the metal are approximated as a classical Coulomb-interacting electron gas, and their motion under the excitation of an external electromagnetic field is described by the cold-plasma wave equations. Through numerical simulations, it is demonstrated that the microscopic theory includes the dominant physical mechanisms bothqualitatively and quantitatively.

Improved Linear Precoding over Block Diagonalization in Multi-cell Cooperative Networks

In downlink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, block diagonalization (BD) is a practical linear precoding scheme which achieves the same degrees of freedom (DoF) as the optimal linear/nonlinear precoding schemes. However, its sum-rate performance is rather poor in the practical SNR regime due to the transmit power boost problem. In this paper, we propose an improved linear precoding scheme over BD with a so-called "effective-SNR-enhancement" technique. The transmit covariance matrices are obtained by firstly solving a power minimization problem subject to the minimum rate constraint achieved by BD, and then properly scaling the solution to satisfy the power constraints. It is proved that such approach equivalently enhances the system SNR, and hence compensates the transmit power boost problem associated with BD. The power minimization problem is in general non-convex. We therefore propose an efficient algorithm that solves the problem heuristically. Simulation results show significant sum rate gains over the optimal BD and the existing minimum mean square error (MMSE) based precoding schemes.

Improving Achievable Rate for the Two-User SISO Interference Channel with Improper Gaussian Signaling

This paper studies the achievable rate region of the two-user single-input-single-output (SISO) Gaussian interference channel, when the improper Gaussian signaling is applied. Under the assumption that the interference is treated as additive Gaussian noise, we show that the user's achievable rate can be expressed as a summation of the rate achievable by the conventional proper Gaussian signaling, which depends on the users' input covariances only, and an additional term, which is a function of both the users' covariances and pseudo-covariances. The additional degree of freedom given by the pseudo-covariance, which is conventionally set to be zero for the case of proper Gaussian signaling, provides an opportunity to improve the achievable rate by employing the improper Gaussian signaling. Since finding the optimal solution for the joint covariance and pseudo-covariance optimization is difficult, we propose a sub-optimal but efficient algorithm by separately optimizing these two sets of parameters. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm provides a close-to-optimal performance as compared to the exhaustive search method, and significantly outperforms the optimal proper Gaussian signaling and other existing improper Gaussian signaling schemes.

On the Capacity Region of Two-User Linear Deterministic Interference Channel and Its Application to Multi-Session Network Coding

In this paper, we study the capacity of the two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) linear deterministic interference channel (IC), with possible correlations within/between the channel matrices. The capacity region is characterized in terms of the rank of the channel matrices. It is shown that \emph{linear precoding} with Han-Kobayashi type of rate-splitting, i.e., splitting the information-bearing symbols of each user into common and private parts, is sufficient to achieve all the rate pairs in the derived capacity region. The capacity result is applied to obtain an achievable rate region for the double-unicast networks with random network coding at the intermediate nodes, which can be modeled by the two-user MIMO linear deterministic IC studied. It is shown that the newly proposed achievable region is strictly larger than the existing regions in the literature.

Surface polaritons in two-dimensional left-handed photonic crystals

Using an extended plane-wave-based transfer-matrix method, the photonic band structures and the corresponding transmission spectrum of a two-dimensional left-handed photonic crystal are calculated. Comparisons between the periodic structure with a single left-handed cylindric rod are made, and many interesting similarities are found. It is shown that, due to the localized surface polaritons presented by an isolated left-handed rod, there exist many exciting physical phenomena in high-dimensional left-handed photonic crystals. As direct results of coupling of the localized surface polaritons of neighboring left-handed rod, a lot of almost dispersionless bands, anti-crossing behavior, and a zero $\bar{n}$ gap are exhibited in the left-handed periodic structure. Moreover, in a certain frequency region, except distorted by a lot of anti-crossing behavior, there exists a continual dispersion relation, which can be explained by the long-wavelength approximation. It is also pointed out that high-dimensional left-handed photonic crystals can be used to design narrow-band filter.

General Properties of Two-dimensional Conformal Transformation in Electrostatics

Electrostatic properties of two-dimensional nanosystems can be described by their geometry resonances. In this paper we prove that these modes as well as the corresponding eigenvalues are invariant under any conformal transformation. This invariance further leads to a new way to studying the transformed structures. Namely, transforming a geometry is equivalent to modifying the strengths of these invariant eigenmodes excited by the external excitations.

Dynamical electric dipole theory for quantitatively describing coupled split-ring resonators

Metallic split-ring resonators possess dominant electric dipoles as well as considerable magnetic dipoles under proper excitations. Full-wave numerical approaches are frequently employed to simulate adjacent split-ring resonators, but simulations cannot explain the underlying physics. An analytical theory based on a dynamic electric dipole approximation is developed here. Detailed theory-simulation comparisons demonstrate that this theory can \textit{quantitatively} describe the interaction strength of coupled split-ring-resonators under certain circumstances.

Electrostatic theory for designing lossless negative permittivity metamaterials

In this Letter, we develop an electrostatic theory for designing bulk composites with effective lossless negative permittivities. The theory and associated design procedure are validated by comparing their predictions with those of rigorous full-wave simulations. It is demonstrated that the excitation of the Frohlich mode (the first-order surface mode) of the constitutive nanoparticles plays a key role in achieving negative permittivities with compensated losses.

A classical theory for second-harmonic generation from metallic nanoparticles

In this article, we develop a classical electrodynamic theory to study the optical nonlinearities of metallic nanoparticles. The quasi-free electrons inside the metal are approximated as a classical Coulomb-interacting electron gas, and their motion under the excitation of an external electromagnetic field is described by the plasma equations. This theory is further tailored to study second-harmonic generation. Through detailed experiment-theory comparisons, we validate this classical theory as well as the associated numerical algorithm. It is demonstrated that our theory not only provides qualitative agreement with experiments, it also reproduces the overall strength of the experimentally observed second-harmonic signals.

Different mechanisms for efficient optical transmission through bilayered subwavelength patterned metal films

Light transmission through bilayered thin metal films perforated with subwavelength hole arrays are numerically studied based on a full-vector finite-difference time-domain approach. A variety of transmission peaks originating from different physical mechanisms are observed. In addition to the direct tunnelling and Fabry-Pèrot resonances, generally possessed by idealized bilayered dielectric slabs, the near-field localized plasmon polaritons also play important roles. They not only influence the direct tunnelling in a destructive or constructive way, the interactions between these localized plasmon polaritons on different metal films also result in additional channels which transfer optical energy effectively.

Magnetic dipole moments in single and coupled split-ring resonators

We examine the role of magnetic dipoles in single and coupled pairs of metallic split-ring resonators by numerically computing their magnitude and examining their relative contributions to the scattering cross section. We demonstrate that magnetic dipoles can strongly influence the scattering cross section along particular directions. It is also found that the magnetic dipole parallel to the incident magnetic field and/or high-order multipoles may play a significant role in the linear response of coupled split-ring resonators.

Polarization-Current-Based FDTD Near-to-Far-Field Transformation

A new near-to-far-field transformation algorithm for three-dimensional finite-different time-domain is presented in this article. This new approach is based directly on the polarization current of the scatterer, not the scattered near fields. It therefore eliminates the numerical errors originating from the spatial offset of the E and H fields, inherent in the standard near-to-far-field transformation. The proposed method is validated via direct comparisons with the analytical Lorentz-Mie solutions of plane waves scattered by large dielectric and metallic spheres with strong forward-scattering lobes.
