A Self-Guided Framework for Radiology Report Generation

Automatic radiology report generation is essential to computer-aided diagnosis. Through the success of image captioning, medical report generation has been achievable. However, the lack of annotated disease labels is still the bottleneck of this area. In addition, the image-text data bias problem and complex sentences make it more difficult to generate accurate reports. To address these gaps, we pre-sent a self-guided framework (SGF), a suite of unsupervised and supervised deep learning methods to mimic the process of human learning and writing. In detail, our framework obtains the domain knowledge from medical reports with-out extra disease labels and guides itself to extract fined-grain visual features as-sociated with the text. Moreover, SGF successfully improves the accuracy and length of medical report generation by incorporating a similarity comparison mechanism that imitates the process of human self-improvement through compar-ative practice. Extensive experiments demonstrate the utility of our SGF in the majority of cases, showing its superior performance over state-of-the-art meth-ods. Our results highlight the capacity of the proposed framework to distinguish fined-grained visual details between words and verify its advantage in generating medical reports.

Backward doubly stochastic differential equations and SPDEs with quadratic growth

In this paper, we initiate the study of backward doubly stochastic differential equations (BDSDEs, for short) with quadratic growth. The existence, comparison, and stability results for one-dimensional BDSDEs are proved when the generator $f(t,Y,Z)$ grows in $Z$ quadratically and the terminal value is bounded, by introducing some new ideas. Moreover, in this framework, we use BDSDEs to give a probabilistic representation for the solutions of semilinear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs, for short) in Sobolev spaces, and use it to prove the existence and uniqueness of such SPDEs, thus extending the nonlinear Feynman-Kac formula.

Euler class of taut foliations and Dehn filling

In this article, we study the Euler class of taut foliations on the Dehn fillings of a $\mathbb{Q}$-homology solid torus. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the Euler class of a foliation transverse to the core of the filling solid torus to vanish. We apply this condition to taut foliations on Dehn fillings of hyperbolic fibered manifolds and obtain many new left-orderable Dehn filling slopes on these manifolds. For instance, we show that when $X$ is the exterior of a pretzel knot $P(-2,3,2r+1)$, $r\geq 3$, $π_1(X(α_n))$ is left-orderable for a sequence of positive slopes $α_n$ with $α_0 =2g-2$ and $α_n\to 2g-1$. Lastly, we prove that given any $\mathbb{Q}$-homology solid torus, the set of slopes for which the corresponding Dehn fillings admit a taut foliation transverse to the core with zero Euler class is nowhere dense in $\mathbb{R}\cup \{\frac{1}{0}\}$.

Observation of interaction-induced mobility edge in a disordered atomic wire

Mobility edge, a critical energy separating localized and extended excitations, is a key concept for understanding quantum localization. Aubry-André (AA) model, a paradigm for exploring quantum localization, does not naturally allow mobility edges due to self-duality. Using the momentum-state lattice of quantum gas of Cs atoms to synthesize a nonlinear AA model, we provide experimental evidence for mobility edge induced by interactions. By identifying the extended-to-localized transition of different energy eigenstates, we construct a mobility-edge phase diagram. The location of mobility edge in the low- or high-energy region is tunable via repulsive or attractive interactions. Our observation is in good agreement with the theory, and supports an interpretation of such interaction-induced mobility edge via a generalized AA model. Our work also offers new possibilities to engineer quantum transport and phase transitions in disordered systems.

Optimal control of SDEs with expected path constraints and related constrained FBSDEs

In this paper, we consider optimal control of stochastic differential equations subject to an expected path constraint. The stochastic maximum principle is given for a general optimal stochastic control in terms of constrained FBSDEs. In particular, the compensated process in our adjoint equation is deterministic, which seems to be new in the literature. For the typical case of linear stochastic systems and quadratic cost functionals (i.e., the so-called LQ optimal stochastic control), a verification theorem is established, and the existence and uniqueness of the constrained reflected FBSDEs are also given.

Quadratic Mean-Field Reflected BSDEs

In this paper, we analyze mean-field reflected backward stochastic differential equations when the driver has quadratic growth in the second unknown $z$. Using linearization technique and BMO martingale theory, we first apply fixed point argument to establish uniqueness and existence result for the case with bounded terminal condition and obstacle. Then, with the help of a $θ$-method, we develop a successive approximation procedure to remove the boundedness condition on the terminal condition and obstacle when the generator is concave (or convex) with respect to the 2nd unknown $z$

Stochastic linear-quadratic control with a jump and regime switching on a random horizon

In this paper, we study a stochastic linear-quadratic control problem with random coefficients and regime switching on a horizon $[0,T\wedgeτ]$, where $τ$ is a given random jump time for the underlying state process and $T$ is a constant. We obtain an explicit optimal state feedback control and explicit optimal cost value by solving a system of stochastic Riccati equations (SREs) with jumps on $[0,T\wedgeτ]$. By the decomposition approach stemming from filtration enlargement theory, we express the solution of the system of SREs with jumps in terms of another system of SREs involving only Brownian filtration on the deterministic horizon $[0,T]$. Solving the latter system is the key theoretical contribution of this paper and we establish this for three different cases, one of which seems to be new in the literature. These results are then applied to study a mean-variance hedging problem with random parameters that depend on both Brownian motion and Markov chain. The optimal portfolio and optimal value are presented in closed forms with the aid of a system of linear backward stochastic differential equations with jumps and unbounded coefficients in addition to the SREs with jumps.

Twin identification over viewpoint change: A deep convolutional neural network surpasses humans

Deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) have achieved human-level accuracy in face identification (Phillips et al., 2018), though it is unclear how accurately they discriminate highly-similar faces. Here, humans and a DCNN performed a challenging face-identity matching task that included identical twins. Participants (N=87) viewed pairs of face images of three types: same-identity, general imposter pairs (different identities from similar demographic groups), and twin imposter pairs (identical twin siblings). The task was to determine whether the pairs showed the same person or different people. Identity comparisons were tested in three viewpoint-disparity conditions: frontal to frontal, frontal to 45-degree profile, and frontal to 90-degree profile. Accuracy for discriminating matched-identity pairs from twin-imposters and general imposters was assessed in each viewpoint-disparity condition. Humans were more accurate for general-imposter pairs than twin-imposter pairs, and accuracy declined with increased viewpoint disparity between the images in a pair. A DCNN trained for face identification (Ranjan et al., 2018) was tested on the same image pairs presented to humans. Machine performance mirrored the pattern of human accuracy, but with performance at or above all humans in all but one condition. Human and machine similarity scores were compared across all image-pair types. This item-level analysis showed that human and machine similarity ratings correlated significantly in six of nine image-pair types [range r=0.38 to r=0.63], suggesting general accord between the perception of face similarity by humans and the DCNN. These findings also contribute to our understanding of DCNN performance for discriminating high-resemblance faces, demonstrate that the DCNN performs at a level at or above humans, and suggest a degree of parity between the features used by humans and the DCNN.

Constrained stochastic LQ control on infinite time horizon with regime switching

This paper is concerned with a stochastic linear-quadratic (LQ) optimal control problem on infinite time horizon, with regime switching, random coefficients, and cone control constraint. To tackle the problem, two new extended stochastic Riccati equations (ESREs) on infinite time horizon are introduced. The existence of the nonnegative solutions, in both standard and singular cases, is proved through a sequence of ESREs on finite time horizon. Based on this result and some approximation techniques, we obtain the optimal state feedback control and optimal value for the stochastic LQ problem explicitly. Finally, we apply these results to solve a lifetime portfolio selection problem of tracking a given wealth level with regime switching and portfolio constraint.

Constrained stochastic LQ control with regime switching and application to portfolio selection

This paper is concerned with a stochastic linear-quadratic optimal control problem with regime switching, random coefficients, and cone control constraint. The randomness of the coefficients comes from two aspects: the Brownian motion and the Markov chain. Using Itô's lemma for Markov chain, we obtain the optimal state feedback control and optimal cost value explicitly via two new systems of extended stochastic Riccati equations (ESREs). We prove the existence and uniqueness of the two ESREs using tools including multidimensional comparison theorem, truncation function technique, log transformation and the John-Nirenberg inequality. These results are then applied to study mean-variance portfolio selection problems with and without short-selling prohibition with random parameters depending on both the Brownian motion and the Markov chain. Finally, the efficient portfolios and efficient frontiers are presented in closed forms.

Dynamic sensitivity of quantum Rabi model with quantum criticality

We study the dynamic sensitivity of the quantum Rabi model, which exhibits quantum criticality in the finite-component-system case. This dynamic sensitivity can be detected by introducing an auxiliary two-level atom far-off-resonantly coupled to the cavity field of the quantum Rabi model. We find that when the quantum Rabi model goes through the critical point, the auxiliary atom experiences a sudden decoherence, which can be characterised by a sharp decay of the Loschmidt echo. Our scheme will provide a reliable way to observe quantum phase transition in ultrastrongly coupled quantum systems.

Quadratic $G$-BSDEs with convex generators and unbounded terminal conditions

In this paper, we first study one-dimensional quadratic backward stochastic differential equations driven by $G$-Brownian motions ($G$-BSDEs) with unbounded terminal values. With the help of a $θ$-method of Briand and Hu [4] and nonlinear stochastic analysis techniques, we propose an approximation procedure to prove existence and uniqueness result when the generator is convex (or concave) and terminal value is of exponential moments of arbitrary order. Finally, we also establish the well-posedness of multi-dimensional G-BSDEs with diagonally quadratic generators.

Consistent Investment of Sophisticated Rank-Dependent Utility Agents in Continuous Time

We study portfolio selection in a complete continuous-time market where the preference is dictated by the rank-dependent utility. As such a model is inherently time inconsistent due to the underlying probability weighting, we study the investment behavior of sophisticated consistent planners who seek (subgame perfect) intra-personal equilibrium strategies. We provide sufficient conditions under which an equilibrium strategy is a replicating portfolio of a final wealth. We derive this final wealth profile explicitly, which turns out to be in the same form as in the classical Merton model with the market price of risk process properly scaled by a deterministic function in time. We present this scaling function explicitly through the solution to a highly nonlinear and singular ordinary differential equation, whose existence of solutions is established. Finally, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the scaling function to be smaller than 1 corresponding to an effective reduction in risk premium due to probability weighting.

Memory-Critical Dynamical Buildup of Phonon-Dressed Majorana Fermions

We investigate the dynamical interplay between topological state of matter and a non-Markovian dissipation, which gives rise to a new and crucial time scale into the system dynamics due to its quantum memory. We specifically study a one-dimensional polaronic topological superconductor with phonon-dressed $p$-wave pairing, when a fast temperature increase in surrounding phonons induces an open-system dynamics. We show that when the memory depth increases, the Majorana edge dynamics transits from relaxing monotonically to a plateau of substantial value into a collapse-and-buildup behavior, even when the polaron Hamiltonian is close to the topological phase boundary. Above a critical memory depth, the system can approach a new dressed state of topological superconductor in dynamical equilibrium with phonons, with nearly full buildup of Majorana correlation.

Model-Based Compensation of Moving Tissue for State Recognition in Robotic-Assisted Pedicle Drilling

Drilling is one of the hardest parts of pedicle screw fixation, and it is one of the most dangerous operations because inaccurate screw placement would injury vital tissues, particularly when the vertebra is not stationary. Here we demonstrate the drilling state recognition method for moving tissue by compensating the displacement based on a simplified motion predication model of a vertebra with respect to the tidal volume. To adapt it to different patients, the prediction model was built based on the physiological data recorded from subjects themselves. In addition, the spindle speed of the drilling tool was investigated to find a suitable speed for the robotic-assisted system. To ensure patient safety, a monitoring system was built based on the thrusting force and tracked position information. Finally, experiments were carried out on a fresh porcine lamellar bone fixed on a 3-PRS parallel robot used to simulate the vertebra displacement. The success rate of the robotic-assisted drilling procedure reached 95% when the moving bone was compensated.

Multi-dimensional backward stochastic differential equations of diagonally quadratic generators: the general result

This paper is devoted to a general solvability of a multi-dimensional backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) of a diagonally quadratic generator $g(t,y,z)$, by relaxing the assumptions of \citet{HuTang2016SPA} on the generator and terminal value. More precisely, the generator $g(t,y,z)$ can have more general growth and continuity in $y$ in the local solution; while in the global solution, the generator $g(t,y,z)$ can have a skew sub-quadratic but in addition "strictly and diagonally" quadratic growth in the second unknown variable $z$, or the terminal value can be unbounded but the generator $g(t,y,z)$ is "diagonally dependent" on the second unknown variable $z$ (i.e., the $i$-th component $g^i$ of the generator $g$ only depends on the $i$-th row $z^i$ of the variable $z$ for each $i=1,\cdots,n$ ). Three new results are established on the local and global solutions when the terminal value is bounded and the generator $g$ is subject to some general assumptions. When the terminal value is unbounded but is of exponential moments of arbitrary order, an existence and uniqueness result is given under the assumptions that the generator $g(t,y,z)$ is Lipschitz continuous in the first unknown variable $y$, and varies with the second unknown variable $z$ in a "diagonal" , "component-wisely convex or concave", and "quadratically growing" way, which seems to be the first general solvability of systems of quadratic BSDEs with unbounded terminal values. This generalizes and strengthens some existing results via some new ideas.

Systems of ergodic BSDEs arising in regime switching forward performance processes

We introduce and solve a new type of quadratic backward stochastic differential equation systems defined in an infinite time horizon, called \emph{ergodic BSDE systems}. Such systems arise naturally as candidate solutions to characterize forward performance processes and their associated optimal trading strategies in a regime switching market. In addition, we develop a connection between the solution of the ergodic BSDE system and the long-term growth rate of classical utility maximization problems, and use the ergodic BSDE system to study the large time behavior of PDE systems with quadratic growth Hamiltonians.

Quantum superhet based on microwave-dressed Rydberg atoms

The highly sensitive, phase- and frequency-resolved detection of microwave electric fields is of central importance for diverse fields ranging from astronomy, remote sensing, communication and microwave quantum technology. However, present quantum sensing of microwave electric fields primarily relies on atom-based electrometers only enabling amplitude measurement. Moreover, the best sensitivity of atom-based electrometers is limited by photon shot noise to few $μ$Vcm$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1/2}$: While going beyond is in principle possible by using squeezed light or Schrödinger-cat state, the former is very challenging for atomic experiments while the latter is feasible in all but very small atomic systems. Here we report a novel microwave electric field quantum sensor termed as quantum superhet, which, for the first time, enables experimental measurement of phase and frequency, and makes a sensitivity few tens of nVcm$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1/2}$ readily accessible for current experiments. This sensor is based on microwave-dressed Rydberg atoms and tailored optical spectrum, with very favorable scalings on sensitivity gains. We can experimentally achieve a sensitivity of $55$ nVcm$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1/2}$, with the minimum detectable field being three orders of magnitude smaller than existing quantum electrometers. We also measure phase and frequency, being able to reach a frequency accuracy of few tens of $μ$Hz for microwave field of just few tens of nVcm$^{-1}$. Our technique can be also applied to sense electric fields at terahertz or radio frequency. This work is a first step towards realizing the long sought-after electromagnetic-wave quantum sensors with quantum projection noise limited sensitivity, promising broad applications such as in radio telescope, terahertz communication and quantum control.

BSDEs with mean reflection

In this paper, we study a new type of BSDE, where the distribution of the Y-component of the solution is required to satisfy an additional constraint, written in terms of the expectation of a loss function. This constraint is imposed at any deterministic time t and is typically weaker than the classical pointwise one associated to reflected BSDEs. Focusing on solutions (Y, Z, K) with deterministic K, we obtain the well-posedness of such equation, in the presence of a natural Skorokhod type condition. Such condition indeed ensures the minimality of the enhanced solution, under an additional structural condition on the driver. Our results extend to the more general framework where the constraint is written in terms of a static risk measure on Y. In particular, we provide an application to the super hedging of claims under running risk management constraint.

Dynamical Buildup of a Quantized Hall Response from Non-Topological States

We consider a two-dimensional system initialized in a topologically trivial state before its Hamiltonian is ramped through a phase transition into a Chern insulator regime. This scenario is motivated by current experiments with ultracold atomic gases aimed at realizing time-dependent dynamics in topological insulators. Our main findings are twofold. First, considering coherent dynamics, the non-equilibrium Hall response is found to approach a topologically quantized time averaged value in the limit of slow but non-adiabatic parameter ramps, even though the Chern number of the state remains trivial. Second, adding dephasing, the destruction of quantum coherence is found to stabilize this Hall response, while the Chern number generically becomes undefined. We provide a geometric picture of this phenomenology in terms of the time-dependent Berry curvature.

Linear Quadratic Mean Field Game with Control Input Constraint

In this paper, we study a class of linear-quadratic (LQ) mean-field games in which the individual control process is constrained in a closed convex subset $Γ$ of full space $\mathbb{R}^m$. The decentralized strategies and consistency condition are represented by a class of mean-field forward-backward stochastic differential equation (MF-FBSDE) with projection operators on $Γ$. The wellposedness of consistency condition system is obtained using the monotonicity condition method. The related $ε$-Nash equilibrium property is also verified.

Quadratic backward stochastic differential equations driven by $G$-Brownian motion: discrete solutions and approximation

In this paper, we consider backward stochastic differential equations driven by $G$-Brownian motion (GBSDEs) under quadratic assumptions on coefficients. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solution for such equations. On the one hand, a priori estimates are obtained by applying the Girsanov type theorem in the $G$-framework, from which we deduce the uniqueness. On the other hand, to prove the existence of solutions, we first construct solutions for discrete GBSDEs by solving corresponding fully nonlinear PDEs, and then approximate solutions for general quadratic GBSDEs in Banach spaces.

A probabilistic approach to large time behaviour of mild solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations in infinite dimension

We study the large time behaviour of mild solutions of HJB equations in infinite dimension by a purely probabilistic approach. For that purpose, we show that the solution of a BSDE in finite horizon $T$ taken at initial time behaves like a linear term in $T$ shifted with the solution of the associated EBSDE taken at initial time. Moreover we give an explicit speed of convergence, which seems to appear very rarely in literature.

A probabilistic approach to large time behaviour of viscosity solutions of parabolic equations with Neumann boundary conditions

This paper is devoted to the study of the large time behaviour of viscosity solutions of parabolic equations with Neumann boundary conditions. This work is the sequel of [13] in which a probabilistic method was developped to show that the solution of a parabolic semilinear PDE behaves like a linear term $λT$ shifted with a function $v$, where $(v,λ)$ is the solution of the ergodic PDE associated to the parabolic PDE. We adapt this method in finite dimension by a penalization method in order to be able to apply an important basic coupling estimate result and with the help of a regularization procedure in order to avoid the lack of regularity of the coefficients in finite dimension. The advantage of our method is that it gives an explicit rate of convergence.

BMO Martingales and Positive Solutions of Heat Equations

In this paper, we develop a new approach to establish gradient estimates for positive solutions to the heat equation of elliptic or subelliptic operators on Euclidean spaces or on Riemannian manifolds. More precisely, we give some estimates of the gradient of logarithm of a positive solution via the uniform bound of the logarithm of the solution. Moreover, we give a generalized version of Li-Yau's estimate. Our proof is based on the link between PDE and quadratic BSDE. Our method might be useful to study some (nonlinear) PDEs.

Effects of Gapless Bosonic Fluctuations on Majorana Fermions in Atomic Wire Coupled to a Molecular Reservoir

We discuss the effects of quantum and thermal fluctuations on the Majorana edge states in a topological atomic wire coupled to a superfluid molecular gas with gapless excitations. We find that the coupling between the Majorana edge states remains exponentially decaying with the length of the wire, even at finite temperatures smaller than the energy gap for bulk excitations in the wire. This exponential dependence is controlled solely by the localization length of the Majorana states. The fluctuations, on the other hand, provide the dominant contribution to the preexponential factor, which increases with temperature and the length of the wire. More important is that thermal fluctuations give rise to a decay of an initial correlation between Majorana edge states to its stationary value after some thermalization time. This stationary value is sensitive to the temperature and to the length of the wire, and, although vanishing in the thermodynamic limit, can still be feasible in a mesoscopic system at sufficiently low temperatures. The thermalization time, on the other hand, is found to be much larger than the typical time scales in the wire, and is sufficient for quantum operations with Majorana fermions before the temperature-induced decoherence sets in.

Fluctuations of pion flow harmonics and HBT correlation functions in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions

We investigate the fluctuations of pion elliptic flow, triangular flow, and Hanbury-Brown-Twiss (HBT) correlation functions for the hydrodynamic sources with fluctuating initial conditions in the heavy ion collisions of the Au-Au at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV and the Pb-Pb at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =2.76$ TeV. A method based on event-subcollection analysis is used to detect these fluctuations in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. We introduce a granularity length to describe the granular inhomogeneity of the initial sources, and investigate its relationships with the fluctuations of the flow harmonics and HBT correlation functions. Our investigations indicate that the fluctuations of the triangular flow of event subcollections are sensitive to the granularity length of the initial source. This dependence may provide a way to study the granular inhomogeneity of the initial source through the analyses of the fluctuations of triangular flow in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions.

Majoranas in Noisy Kitaev Wires

Robustness of edge states and non-Abelian excitations of topological states of matter promises quantum memory and quantum processing, which is naturally immune against microscopic imperfections such as static disorder. However, topological properties will not in general protect quantum system from time-dependent disorder or noise. Here we take the example of a network of Kitaev wires with Majorana edge modes storing qubits to investigate the effects of classical noise in the crossover from the quasi-static to the fast fluctuation regime. We present detailed results for the Majorana edge correlations, and fidelity of braiding operations for both global and local noise sources preserving parity symmetry, such as random chemical potentials and phase fluctuations. While in general noise will induce heating and dephasing, we identify examples of long-lived quantum correlations in presence of fast noise due to motional narrowing, where external noise drives the system rapidly between the topological and non-topological phases.

In [3], the authors proved that uniqueness holds among solutions whose exponentials are $L^p$ with $p$ bigger than a constant $γ$ ($p\textgreater{}γ$). In this paper, we consider the critical case: $p=γ$. We prove that the uniqueness holds among solutions whose exponentials are $L^γ$ under the additional assumption that the generator is strongly convex.

Probing the Flat Band of Optically-Trapped Spin-Orbital Coupled Bose Gases Using Bragg Spectroscopy

Motivated by the recent efforts in creating the flat band in ultracold atomic systems, we investigate how to probe the flat band in an optically-trapped spin-orbital coupled Bose-Einstein condensate using Bragg spectroscopy. We have found that the excitation spectrum and the dynamic structure factor of the condensate alter dramatically, when the band structure exhibits various level of flatness. In particular, when the band exhibits perfect flatness around the band minima corresponding to a near infinite effective mass, a quadratic dispersion emerges in the low-energy excitation spectrum; in sharp contrast, for the opposite case when an ordinary band is present, the familiar linear dispersion arises. Such linear-to-quadratic crossover in the energy spectrum presents a striking manifestation of the transition of an ordinary band into a flat band, thereby allows the direct probe of the flat band by using Bragg spectroscopy.

Time-Inconsistent Stochastic Linear--Quadratic Control: Characterization and Uniqueness of Equilibrium

In this paper, we continue our study on a general time-inconsistent stochastic linear--quadratic (LQ) control problem originally formulated in [6]. We derive a necessary and sufficient condition for equilibrium controls via a flow of forward--backward stochastic differential equations. When the state is one dimensional and the coefficients in the problem are all deterministic, we prove that the explicit equilibrium control constructed in \cite{HJZ} is indeed unique. Our proof is based on the derived equivalent condition for equilibria as well as a stochastic version of the Lebesgue differentiation theorem. Finally, we show that the equilibrium strategy is unique for a mean--variance portfolio selection model in a complete financial market where the risk-free rate is a deterministic function of time but all the other market parameters are possibly stochastic processes.

Left-orderability and cyclic branched coverings

We provide an alternative proof of a sufficient condition for the fundamental group of the $n^{th}$ cyclic branched cover of $S^3$ along a prime knot $K$ to be left-orderable, which is originally due to Boyer-Gordon-Watson. As an application of this sufficient condition, we show that for any $(p,q)$ two-bridge knot, with $p\equiv 3 \text{ mod } 4$, there are only finitely many cyclic branched covers whose fundamental groups are not left-orderable. This answers a question posed by D{\c a}bkowski, Przytycki and Togha.

Multi-Dimensional Backward Stochastic Differential Equations of Diagonally Quadratic generators

The paper is concerned with adapted solution of a multi-dimensional BSDE with a "diagonally" quadratic generator, the quadratic part of whose $i$th component only depends on the $i$th row of the second unknown variable. Quench Dynamics of Three-Dimensional Disordered Bose Gases: Condensation, Superfluidity and Fingerprint of Dynamical Bose Glass

In an equilibrium three-dimensional (3D) disordered condensate, it's well established that disorder can generate an amount of normal fluid equaling to $\frac{4}{3}$ of the condensate depletion. The concept that the superfluid is more volatile to the existence of disorder than the condensate is crucial to the understanding of Bose glass phase. In this Letter, we show that, by bringing a weakly disordered 3D condensate to nonequilibrium regime via a quantum quench in the interaction, disorder can destroy superfluid significantly more, leading to a steady state in which the normal fluid density far exceeds $\frac{4}{3}$ of the condensate depletion. This suggests a possibility of engineering Bose Glass in the dynamic regime. As both the condensate density and superfluid density are measurable quantities, our results allow an experimental demonstration of the dramatized interplay between the disorder and interaction in the nonequilibrium scenario.

Stochastic maximum principle for optimal control of SPDEs

We prove a version of the maximum principle, in the sense of Pontryagin, for the optimal control of a stochastic partial differential equation driven by a finite dimensional Wiener process. The equation is formulated in a semi-abstract form that allows direct applications to a large class of controlled stochastic parabolic equations. We allow for a diffusion coefficient dependent on the control parameter, and the space of control actions is general, so that in particular we need to introduce two adjoint processes. The second adjoint process takes values in a suitable space of operators on $L^4$.

Switching Game of Backward Stochastic Differential Equations and Associated System of Obliquely Reflected Backward Stochastic Differential Equations

This paper is concerned with the switching game of a one-dimensional backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE). The associated Bellman-Isaacs equation is a system of matrix-valued BSDEs living in a special unbounded convex domain with reflection on the boundary along an oblique direction. In this paper, we show the existence of an adapted solution to this system of BSDEs with oblique reflection by the penalization method, the monotone convergence, and the a priori estimates.

Ergodic BSDEs driven by Markov Chains

We consider ergodic backward stochastic differential equations, in a setting where noise is generated by a countable state uniformly ergodic Markov chain. We show that for Lipschitz drivers such that a comparison theorem holds, these equations admit unique solutions. To obtain this result, we show by coupling and splitting techniques that uniform ergodicity estimates of Markov chains are robust to perturbations of the rate matrix, and that these perturbations correspond in a natural way to EBSDEs. We then consider applications of this theory to Markov decision problems with a risk-averse average reward criterion.

Time-Inconsistent Stochastic Linear--Quadratic Control

In this paper, we formulate a general time-inconsistent stochastic linear--quadratic (LQ) control problem. The time-inconsistency arises from the presence of a quadratic term of the expected state as well as a state-dependent term in the objective functional. We define an equilibrium, instead of optimal, solution within the class of open-loop controls, and derive a sufficient condition for equilibrium controls via a flow of forward--backward stochastic differential equations. When the state is one dimensional and the coefficients in the problem are all deterministic, we find an explicit equilibrium control. As an application, we then consider a mean-variance portfolio selection model in a complete financial market where the risk-free rate is a deterministic function of time but all the other market parameters are possibly stochastic processes. Applying the general sufficient condition, we obtain explicit equilibrium strategies when the risk premium is both deterministic and stochastic.

Visualization of Dimensional Effects in Collective Excitations of Optically Trapped Quasi-Two-Dimensional Bose Gases

We analyze the macroscopic dynamics of a Bose gas axially confined in an optical lattice with a superimposed harmonic trap, taking into account weak tunneling effect. Our results show that upon transition to the quasi-two-dimensional (2D) regime of the trapped gas, the 3D equation of state and equilibrium density profile acquire corrections from 2D many-body effects. The corresponding frequency shift in the transverse breathing mode is accessible within current facilities, suggesting a direct observation of dimensional effects. Collective excitations of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of weak disorder and a two-dimensional optical lattice

We investigate the combined effects of weak disorder and a two-dimensional (2D) optical lattice on the collective excitations of a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) at zero temperature. Accordingly, we generalize the hydrodynamic equations of superfluid for a weakly interacting Bose gas in a 2D optical lattice to include the effects of weak disorder. Our analytical results for the collective frequencies beyond the mean-field approximation reveal the peculiar role of disorder, interplaying with the 2D optical lattice and interatomic interaction, on elementary excitations along the 3D to 1D dimensional crossover. In particular, consequences of disorder on the phonon propagation and surface modes are analyzed in detail. The experimental scenario is also proposed.

Ergodic BSDEs under weak dissipative assumptions

In this paper we study ergodic backward stochastic differential equations (EBSDEs) dropping the strong dissipativity assumption needed in the previous work. In other words we do not need to require the uniform exponential decay of the difference of two solutions of the underlying forward equation, which, on the contrary, is assumed to be non degenerate. We show existence of solutions by use of coupling estimates for a non-degenerate forward stochastic differential equations with bounded measurable non-linearity. Moreover we prove uniqueness of "Markovian" solutions exploiting the recurrence of the same class of forward equations. Applications are then given to the optimal ergodic control of stochastic partial differential equations and to the associated ergodic Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations.

Integral-Partial Differential Equations of Isaacs' Type Related to Stochastic Differential Games with Jumps

In this paper we study zero-sum two-player stochastic differential games with jumps with the help of theory of Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (BSDEs). We generalize the results of Fleming and Souganidis [10] and those by Biswas [3] by considering a controlled stochastic system driven by a d-dimensional Brownian motion and a Poisson random measure and by associating nonlinear cost functionals defined by controlled BSDEs. Moreover, unlike the both papers cited above we allow the admissible control processes of both players to depend on all events occurring before the beginning of the game. This quite natural extension allows the players to take into account such earlier events, and it makes even easier to derive the dynamic programming principle. The price to pay is that the cost functionals become random variables and so also the upper and the lower value functions of the game are a priori random fields. The use of a new method allows to prove that, in fact, the upper and the lower value functions are deterministic. On the other hand, the application of BSDE methods [18] allows to prove a dynamic programming principle for the upper and the lower value functions in a very straight-forward way, as well as the fact that they are the unique viscosity solutions of the upper and the lower integral-partial differential equations of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman-Isaacs' type, respectively. Finally, the existence of the value of the game is got in this more general setting if Isaacs' condition holds.

Optically trapped quasi-two-dimensional Bose gases in random environment: quantum fluctuations and superfluid density

We investigate a dilute Bose gas confined in a tight one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice plus a superimposed random potential at zero temperature. Accordingly, the ground state energy, quantum depletion and superfluid density are calculated. The presence of the lattice introduces a crossover to the quasi-2D regime, where we analyze asymptotically the 2D behavior of the system, particularly the effects of disorder. We thereby offer an analytical expression for the ground state energy of a purely 2D Bose gas in a random potential. The obtained disorder-induced normal fluid density $n_n$ and quantum depletion $n_d$ both exhibit a characteristic $1/\ln\left(1/n_{2D}a_{2D}^{2}\right)$ dependence. Their ratio $n_n/n_d$ increases to $2$ compared to the familiar $4/3$ in lattice-free 3D geometry, signifying a more pronounced contrast between superfluidity and Bose-Einstein condensation in low dimensions. Conditions for possible experimental realization of our scenario are also proposed.

Optimal consumption and investment in incomplete markets with general constraints

We study an optimal consumption and investment problem in a possibly incomplete market with general, not necessarily convex, stochastic constraints. We give explicit solutions for investors with exponential, logarithmic and power utility. Our approach is based on martingale methods which rely on recent results on the existence and uniqueness of solutions to BSDEs with drivers of quadratic growth.

Effects of disorder on quantum fluctuations and superfluid density of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a two-dimensional optical lattice

We investigate a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a 2D optical lattice in the presence of weak disorder within the framework of the Bogoliubov theory. In particular, we analyze the combined effects of disorder and an optical lattice on quantum fluctuations and superfluid density of the BEC system. Accordingly, the analytical expressions of the ground state energy and quantum depletion of the system are obtained. Our results show that the lattice still induces a characteristic 3D to 1D crossover in the behavior of quantum fluctuations, despite the presence of weak disorder. Furthermore, we use the linear response theory to calculate the normal fluid density of the condensate induced by disorder. Our results in the 3D regime show that the combined presence of disorder and lattice induce a normal fluid density that asymptotically approaches 4/3 of the corresponding condensate depletion. Conditions for possible experimental realization of our scenario are also proposed.

Quadratic BSDEs with convex generators and unbounded terminal conditions

In a previous work, we proved an existence result for BSDEs with quadratic generators with respect to the variable z and with unbounded terminal conditions. However, no uniqueness result was stated in that work. The main goal of this paper is to fill this gap. In order to obtain a comparison theorem for this kind of BSDEs, we assume that the generator is convex with respect to the variable z. Under this assumption of convexity, we are also able to prove a stability result in the spirit of the a priori estimates stated in the article of N. El Karoui, S. Peng and M.-C. Quenez. With these tools in hands, we can derive the nonlinear Feynman--Kac formula in this context.
