Multi-Reference Epstein-Nesbet Perturbation Theory with Density Matrix Renormalization Group Reference Wavefunction

The accurate electronic structure calculation for strongly correlated chemical systems requires an adequate description for both static and dynamic electron correlation, and is a persistent challenge for quantum chemistry. In order to account for static and dynamic electron correlations accurately and efficiently, in this work we propose a new method by integrating the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method and multi-reference second-order Epstein-Nesbet perturbation theory (ENPT2) with a selected configuration interaction (SCI) approximation. Compared with previous DMRG-based dynamic correlation methods, the DMRG-ENPT2 method extends the range of applicability, allowing us to efficiently calculate systems with very large active space beyond 30 orbitals. We demonstrate this by performing calculations on H$_2$S with an active space of (16e, 15o), hexacene with an active space of (26e, 26o) and 2D H$_{64}$ square lattice with an active space of (42e, 42o).

Analysis on a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio Model of Dynamical Supersymmetry Breaking

This is a report on our newly proposed model of dynamical supersymmetry breaking with some details of the analysis involved. The model in the simplest version has only a chiral superfield (multiplet), with a strong four-superfield interaction in the Kähler potential that induces a real two-superfield composite with vacuum condensate. The latter has supersymmetry breaking parts, which we show to bear nontrivial solution following basically a standard nonperturbative analysis for a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio type model on a superfield setting. The real composite superfield has a spin one component but is otherwise quite unconventional. We discuss also the parallel analysis for the effective theory with the composite. Plausible vacuum solutions are illustrated and analyzed. The supersymmetry breaking solutions have generated soft mass(es) for the scalar avoiding the vanishing supertrace condition for the squared-masses of the superfield components. We also present some analysis of the resulted low energy effective theory with components of the composite become dynamical. The determinant of the fermionic modes is shown to be zero illustrating the presence of the expected Goldstino. The model gives the possibility of constructing a supersymmetric standard model with all (super)symmetry breaking masses generated dynamically and directly without the necessity of complicated hidden or mediating sectors.

X-ray spectropolarimetric signature of a warped disk around a stellar-mass black hole

Black holes in X-ray binaries are often assumed to be rotating perpendicular to the plane of the accretion disk and parallel to the orbital plane of the binary. While the Bardeen-Petterson effect forces the inner part of the accretion disk to be aligned with the equatorial plane of a spinning black hole, the disk may be warped such that the inclination angle of the outer part is different from that of the inner part. In this paper, we identify a possible observational signature of a warped accretion disk in the spectrum of the polarization degree of the continuum. Such a signature would provide direct evidence for the presence of a warped disk and, potentially, even a measure of the warp radius, which, in turn, could be used to infer the viscosity parameter of the disk.

A Simple Model of Dynamical Supersymmetry Breaking with the Generation of Soft Mass(es)

We introduce a simple model of dynamical supersymmetry breaking. It is like a supersymmetric version of a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with a spin one composite. The simplest version of the model as presented here has a single chiral superfield (multiplet) with a four-superfield interaction. The latter has the structure of the square of the superfield magnitude square. A vacuum condensate of the latter is illustrated to develop giving rise to supersymmetry breaking with a soft mass term for the superfield. We report also the effective theory picture with a real superfield composite, illustrating the matching effective potential analysis and the vacuum solution conditions for the components. The nature of its fermionic part as the Goldstone mode is presented. Phenomenological application to the supersymmetric standard model is plausible.

X-ray spectropolarimetric measurements of the Kerr metric

It is thought that the spacetime geometry around black hole candidates is described by the Kerr solution, but an observational confirmation is still missing. Today, the continuum-fitting method and the analysis of the iron K$α$ line cannot unambiguously test the Kerr paradigm because of the degeneracy among the parameters of the system, in the sense that it is impossible with current X-ray data to distinguish a Kerr black hole from a non-Kerr object with different values of the model parameters. In this paper, we study the possibility of testing the Kerr nature of black hole candidates with X-ray spectropolarimetric measurements. Within our simplified model that does not include the effect of returning radiation, we find that it is impossible to test the Kerr metric and the problem is still the strong correlation between the spin and possible deviations from the Kerr geometry. Moreover, the correlation is very similar to that of other two techniques, which makes the combination of different measurements not very helpful. Nevertheless, our results cannot be taken as conclusive and, in order to arrive at a final answer, the effect of returning radiation should be properly taken into account.

Ambiguities and Subtleties in Fermion Mass Terms in Practical Quantum Field Theory

This is a review on structure of the fermion mass terms in quantum field theory, under the perspective of its practical applications in the real physics of Nature -- specifically, we discuss fermion mass structure in the Standard Model of high energy physics, which successfully describes fundamental physics up to the TeV scale. The review is meant to be pedagogical, with detailed mathematics presented beyond the level one can find any easily in the textbooks. The discussions, however, bring up important subtleties and ambiguities about the subject that may be less than well appreciated. In fact, the naive perspective of the nature and masses of fermions as one would easily drawn from the presentations of fermion fields and their equations of motion from a typical textbook on quantum field theory leads to some confusing or even wrong statements which we clarify here. In particular, we illustrate clearly that a Dirac fermion mass eigenstate is mathematically equivalent to two degenerated Majorana fermion mass eigenstates at least so long as the mass terms are concerned. There are further ambiguities and subtleties in the exact description of the eigenstate(s). Especially, for the case of neutrinos, the use of the Dirac or Majorana terminology may be mostly a matter of choice. The common usage of such terminology is rather based on the broken $SU(2)$ charges of the related Weyl spinors hence conventional and may not be unambiguously extended to cover more complicate models.

Comprehensive Analysis on Lepton Flavor Violating Higgs Boson to mu tau Decay in Supersymmetry without R Parity

In this paper we examine thoroughly the Higgs boson to mu tau decay via processes involving R parity violating couplings. By means of full one-loop diagrammatic calculations, we found that even if known experimental constraints, particularly including the stringent sub-eV neutrino mass bounds, give strong restrictions on some of the R parity violating parameters, the branching ratio could still achieve notable value in the admissible parameter space. Hence, the flavor violating leptonic decay is of interest to future experiments. We present here key results of our analysis. Based on the analysis, we give some comments on h -> e mu and h -> e tau also.

Higgs to mu tau Decay in Supersymmetry without R Parity

In this letter, we report on lepton flavor violating Higgs decay into mu+tau in the framework of the generic supersymmetric standard model without R parity and list interesting combinations of R-parity violating parameters. We impose other known experimental constraints on the parameters of the model and show our results from the R-parity violating parameters. In our analysis, the branching ratio of Higgs to mu+tau can exceed 10^{-5} within admissible parameter space.
