A Probabilistic Chemical Programmable Computer

The exponential growth of the power of modern digital computers is based upon the miniaturisation of vast nanoscale arrays of electronic switches, but this will be eventually constrained by fabrication limits and power dissipation. Chemical processes have the potential to scale beyond these limits performing computations through chemical reactions, yet the lack of well-defined programmability limits their scalability and performance. We present a hybrid digitally programmable chemical array as a probabilistic computational machine that uses chemical oscillators partitioned in interconnected cells as a computational substrate. This hybrid architecture performs efficient computation by distributing between chemical and digital domains together with error correction. The efficiency is gained by combining digital with probabilistic chemical logic based on nearest neighbour interactions and hysteresis effects. We demonstrated the implementation of one- and two- dimensional Chemical Cellular Automata and solutions to combinatorial optimization problems.

Can single crystal X-ray diffraction determine a structure uniquely?

The diffraction technique is widely used in the determination of crystal structures and is one of the bases for the modern science and technology. All related structure determination methods are based on the assumption that perfect single crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD) can determine a structure uniquely. But as the structure factor phases are lost in SXRD and even more information is lost in powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), this assumption is still questionable. In this work, we found that structures with certain characteristic can have its sister structure with exactly the same PXRD or even SXRD pattern. A computer program is developed to search the ICSD database, and about 1000 structures were identified to have this characteristic. The original structure and its sister structures can have different space groups, topologies, crystal systems etc. and some may even have multiple sisters. Our studies indicate that special caution is needed since a structure with reasonable atomic positions and perfect match of experimental diffraction intensities could still be wrong.

One-step stirring preparation of room temperature liquid metal negative electrode for the lithium-ion battery

As a new type of self-healing material, room-temperature liquid metal (LM) composed of Ga, In and Sn is a promising anode in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). It is difficult to directly prepare an electrode slurry with pure LM. Here, the LM electrode slurry was successfully prepared by simple high-speed stirring method. The LM in the slurry was evenly distributed in the form of liquid particles (average size 100 μm) and no aggregation occurred. The initial discharge specific capacity of LM is 1148 mAh g-1, and the stable discharge specific capacity is 350 mAh g-1. Cyclic voltammetry measurements show that three pairs of obvious reduction peaks and oxidation occur in LM anodes at 0.37 V,0.67 V,1.02 V and 0.72 V,0.79 V,0.97 V. In the process of lithium insertion, the LM undergoes a liquid-solid phase transition, and when it is delithiated, it will be converted into a liquid phase. The SEI film consumed active lithium and electrolyte during the long cycle, resulting in loss of reversible capacity.
