Analytical solutions for smooth positive-to-negative transition materials

We obtain analytical solutions for positive-to-negative transition materials with a smooth transition profile "$\tanh$". The fields are expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions. The final expressions for reflection and transmission coefficients are obtained in closed forms. The total absorption is nonzero even in the lossless limit in accordance with previous studies. Properties of the total absorption as function of controlling factors are also well studied. As an application of the analytical results, we analyze the effects of smooth transition on perfect imaging and, interestingly, find multiple images of the object.

Modulational instability of a recent nonlinear plasmonic metamaterial: Finite-difference-time-domain simulations

By doing time-domain simulations, we find the proposal for negative-to-positive index switching proposed in [Physical Review Letters, 106 105503 (2012)] may be fragile. The negative opinion on the uniform switching of local optical constants in our recent paper [arXiv:1111.1476v2] based on the circuit model of metamaterials can therefore be verified in this specific and realistic case.

Modulational instability of magnetoelastic metamaterials

We study the modulational instability of recently designed magnetoelastic metamaterials composed of elastic-mediated split-ring resonators (SRR). An effective circuit model is developed. Then four cases are studied: a dimer of SRR, one-dimension (1D) dimerized array, 1D uniform array and two-dimension layered array. It is found that except for the dimer case, all the other many-body cases can present modulational instability which may disturb the bistability (if any) under uniform assumption.

Nonlinear magnetic metamaterials and possible applications on all-optical comparers and bistabilities in Fabry-Perot cavities

We investigate the modulational instability and time-domain dynamics of nonlinear magnetic metamaterials composed of coupled split-ring resonators loaded by Kerr nonlinearity. Our results indicate that the recently proposed optical switching of local optical index based on uniform-response assumption seems fragile. We conceive two alternative schemes to utilize the valuable enhanced non- linearity, one is to focus on few-body systems and directly make use of the modulational instability (e.g., an optical comparator design), the other is to consider global switching arising from global feedbacks as in usual cases (e.g., Fabry-Perot cavities) rather than local-resonances-based switching of optical constants which may be destroyed by the discreteness and interactions as we show in this paper. We also try to provide comprehensive understanding of the relations between our results on discrete nonlinear metamterials and those on continuous metamaterials and natural materials in the literatures.
