Modulational instability of a recent nonlinear plasmonic metamaterial: Finite-difference-time-domain simulations

By doing time-domain simulations, we find the proposal for negative-to-positive index switching proposed in [Physical Review Letters, 106 105503 (2012)] may be fragile. The negative opinion on the uniform switching of local optical constants in our recent paper [arXiv:1111.1476v2] based on the circuit model of metamaterials can therefore be verified in this specific and realistic case.

Plasmonic Demultiplexer and Guiding

Two-dimensional plasmonic demultiplexers for surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), which consist of concentric grooves on a gold film, are proposed and experimentally demonstrated to realize light-SPP coupling, effective dispersion and multiple-channel SPP guiding. A resolution as high as 10 nm is obtained. The leakage radiation microscopy imaging shows that the SPPs of different wavelengths are focused and routed into different SPP strip waveguides. The plasmonic demultiplexer can thus serve as a wavelength division multiplexing element for integrated plasmonic circuit and also as a plasmonic spectroscopy or filter.

The extraordinary radiation pattern of an optical rod antenna

We investigated the radiation pattern of an optical rod antenna and found that it had many features compared with its conventional radio-wave equivalents. After defining a parameter Λ = λeff /λ, which was the ratio of the effective wavelength of the rod antenna to the incident wavelength, we found that Λ had a great influence on the radiation pattern. Even the radiation pattern with a higher resonant order is without side lobes and results in a sharper directivity, which provides new design flexibilities in improving the directivities of the optical antennas.
