Real roots of random orthogonal polynomials with exponential weights

We consider random orthonormal polynomials $$ P_{n}(x)=\sum_{i=0}^{n}ξ_{i}p_{i}(x), $$ where $ξ_{0}$, . . . , $ξ_{n}$ are independent random variables with zero mean, unit variance and uniformly bounded $(2+\ep_0)$-moments, and $\{p_n\}_{n=0}^{\infty}$ is the system of orthonormal polynomials with respect to a general exponential weight $W$ on the real line. This class of orthogonal polynomials includes the popular Hermite and Freud polynomials. We establish universality for the leading asymptotics of the expected number of real roots of $P_n$, both globally and locally. In addition, we find an almost sure limit of the measures counting all roots of $P_n.$ This is accomplished by introducing new ideas on applications of the inverse Littlewood-Offord theory in the context of the classical three term recurrence relation for orthogonal polynomials to establish anti-concentration properties, and by adapting the universality methods to the weighted random orthogonal polynomials of the form $W P_n.$

Generalized Carleson Embeddings into Weighted Outer Measure Spaces

We prove generalized Carleson embeddings for the continuous wave packet transform from $L^p(\mathbb{R},w)$ into an outer $L^p$ space for $2< p < \infty$ and weight $w \in A_{p/2}$. This work is a weighted extension of the corresponding Lebesgue result in arXiv:1309.0945v3 and generalizes a similar result in arXiv:1207.1150. The proof in this article relies on $L^2$ restriction estimates for the wave packet transform which are geometric and may be of independent interest.

Random trigonometric polynomials: universality and non-universality of the variance for the number of real roots

In this paper, we study the number of real roots of random trigonometric polynomials with iid coefficients. When the coefficients have zero mean, unit variance and some finite high moments, we show that the variance of the number of real roots is asymptotically linear in terms of the expectation; furthermore, the multiplicative constant in this linear relationship depends only on the kurtosis of the common distribution of the polynomial's coefficients. This result is in sharp contrast to the classical Kac polynomials whose corresponding variance depends only on the first two moments. Our result is perhaps the first paper to establish the variance for general distribution of the coefficients including discrete ones, for a model of random polynomials outside the family of the Kac polynomials. Our method gives a fine comparison framework throughout Edgeworth expansion, asymptotic Kac-Rice formula and a detailed analysis of characteristic functions.

Variational estimates for the bilinear iterated Fourier integral

We prove pointwise variational Lp bounds for a bilinear Fourier integral operator in a large but not necessarily sharp range of exponents. This result is a joint strengthening of the corresponding bounds for the classical Carleson operator, the bilinear Hilbert transform, the variation norm Carleson operator, and the bi-Carleson operator. Terry Lyon's rough path theory allows for extension of our result to multilinear estimates. We consider our result a proof of concept for a wider array of similar estimates with possible applications to ordinary differential equations.

Variation-norm and fluctuation estimates for ergodic bilinear averages

For any dynamical system, we show that higher variation-norms for the sequence of ergodic bilinear averages of two functions satisfy a large range of bilinear Lp estimates. It follows that, with probability one, the number of fluctuations along this sequence may grow at most polynomially with respect to (the growth of) the underlying scale. These results strengthen previous works of Lacey and Bourgain where almost surely convergence of the sequence was proved (which is equivalent to the qualitative statement that the number of fluctuations is finite at each scale). Via transference, the proof reduces to establishing new bilinear Lp bounds for variation-norms of truncated bilinear operators on R, and the main ingredient of the proof of these bounds is a variation-norm extension of maximal Bessel inequalities of Lacey and Demeter--Tao--Thiele.

Lp theory for outer measures and two themes of Lennart Carleson united

We develop a theory of Lp spaces based on outer measures rather than measures. This theory includes the classical Lp theory on measure spaces as special case. It also covers parts of potential theory and Carleson embedding theorems. The theory turns out to be an elegant language to describe aspects of classical singular integral theory such as paraproduct estimates and T(1) theorems, and it is particularly useful for generalizations of singular integral theory in time-frequency analysis. We formulate and prove a generalized Carleson embedding theorem and give a relatively short reduction of basic estimates for the bilinear Hilbert transform to this new Carleson embedding theorem.

An operator van der Corput estimate arising from oscillatory Riemann-Hilbert problems

We study an operator analogue of the classical problem of finding the rate of decay of an oscillatory integral on the real line. This particular problem arose in the analysis of oscillatory Riemann-Hilbert problems associated with partial differential equations in the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur hierarchy, but is interesting in its own right as a question in harmonic analysis and oscillatory integrals. As was the case in earlier work of the first author, the approach is general and purely real-variable. The resulting estimates we achieve are strongly uniform as a function of the phase and can simultaneously accommodate phases with low regularity (as low as $C^{1,α}$), local singularities, and essentially arbitrary sets of stationary points that degenerate to finite or infinite order.

The spectrum of random kernel matrices: universality results for rough and varying kernels

We consider random matrices whose entries are f(<Xi,Xj>) or f(||Xi-Xj||^2) for iid vectors Xi in R^p with normalized distribution. Assuming that f is sufficiently smooth and the distribution of Xi's is sufficiently nice, El Karoui [17] showed that the spectral distributions of these matrices behave as if f is linear in the Marchenko--Pastur limit. When Xi's are Gaussian vectors, variants of this phenomenon were recently proved for varying kernels, i.e. when f may depend on p, by Cheng and Singer [13]. Two results are shown in this paper: first it is shown that for a large class of distributions the regularity assumptions on f in El Karoui's results can be reduced to minimal; and secondly it is shown that the Gaussian assumptions in Cheng--Singer's result can be removed, answering a question posed in [13] about the universality of the limiting spectral distribution.

Variational bounds for a dyadic model of the bilinear Hilbert transform

We prove variation-norm estimates for the Walsh model of the truncated bilinear Hilbert transform, extending related results of Lacey, Thiele, and Demeter. The proof uses analysis on the Walsh phase plane and two new ingredients: (i) a variational extension of a lemma of Bourgain by Nazarov-Oberlin-Thiele, and (ii) a variation-norm Rademacher-Menshov theorem of Lewko-Lewko.

Weighted bounds for variational Fourier series

For 1<p<infty and for weight w in A_p, we show that the r-variation of the Fourier sums of any function in L^p(w) is finite a.e. for r larger than a finite constant depending on w and p. The fact that the variation exponent depends on w is necessary. This strengthens previous work of Hunt-Young and is a weighted extension of a variational Carleson theorem of Oberlin-Seeger-Tao-Thiele-Wright. The proof uses weighted adaptation of phase plane analysis and a weighted extension of a variational inequality of Lepingle.

Weighted bounds for variational Walsh-Fourier series

For 1<p<infty, and weight w in A_p, and function f in L^p(w), we show that the r-variation of the Walsh-Fourier sums are finite, for r sufficiently large as function of w. (That r is a function of w is necessary.) This strengthens a result of Hunt-Young and is a weighted extension of a variation norm Carleson theorem of Oberlin-Seeger-Tao-Thiele-Wright. The proof uses phase plane analysis and a weighted extension of a variational inequality of Lepingle.

On the Convergence of Lacunary Walsh-Fourier Series

We study the Walsh-Fourier series of S_{n_j}f, along a lacunary subsequence of integers {n_j}. Under a suitable integrability condition, we show that the sequence converges to f a.e. Integral condition is only slightly larger than what the sharp integrability condition would be, by a result of Konyagin. The condition is: f is in L loglog L (logloglog L). The method of proof uses four ingredients, (1) analysis on the Walsh Phase Plane, (2) the new multi-frequency Calderon-Zygmund Decomposition of Nazarov-Oberlin-Thiele, (3) a classical inequality of Zygmund, giving an improvement in the Hausdorff-Young inequality for lacunary subsequences of integers, and (4) the extrapolation method of Carro-Martin, which generalizes the work of Antonov and Arias-de-Reyna.

A nonlinear stationary phase method for oscillatory Riemann-Hilbert problems

We study the asymptotic behavior of oscillatory Riemann-Hilbert problems arising in the AKNS hierarchy of integrable nonlinear PDE's. Our method is based on the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method in which the given Riemann-Hilbert problem localizes to small neighborhoods of stationary phase points. In their original work, Deift and Zhou only considered analytic phase functions. Subsequently Varzugin extended the Deift-Zhou method to a certain restricted class of non-analytic phase functions. In this paper, we extend Varzugin's method to a substantially more general class of non-analytic phase functions. In our work real variable methods play a key role.
