Recovery of a Distributed Order Fractional Derivative in an Unknown Medium

In this work, we study an inverse problem of recovering information about the weight in distributed-order time-fractional diffusion from the observation at one single point on the domain boundary. In the absence of an explicit knowledge of the medium, we prove that the one-point observation can uniquely determine the support bound of the weight. The proof is based on asymptotics of the data, analytic continuation and Titchmarch convolution theorem. When the medium is known, we give an alternative proof of an existing result, i.e., the one-point boundary observation uniquely determines the weight. Several numerical experiments are also presented to complement the analysis.

Inverse source problem with a posteriori boundary measurement for fractional diffusion equations

In this article we study inverse source problems for time-fractional diffusion equations from \textit{a posteriori} boundary measurement. Using the memory effect of these class of equations, we solve these inverse problems for several class of space or time dependent source terms. We prove also the unique determination of a general class of space-time dependent separated variables source terms from such measurement. Our approach is based on the study of singularities of the Laplace transform in time of boundary traces of solutions of time-fractional diffusion equations.

Stable determination of unbounded potential by asymptotic boundary spectral data

We consider the Dirichlet Laplacian $A_q=-Δ+q$ in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, $d \ge 3$, with real-valued perturbation $q \in L^{\max(2 , 3 d / 5)}(Ω)$. We examine the stability issue in the inverse problem of determining the electric potential $q$ from the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of $A_q$. Assuming that the boundary measurement of the normal derivative of the eigenfunctions is a square summable sequence in $L^2(\partial Ω)$, we prove that $q$ can be Hölder stably retrieved through knowledge of the asymptotics of the eigenvalues

The enclosure method for the detection of variable order in fractional diffusion equations

This paper is concerned with a new type of inverse obstacle problem governed by a variable-order time-fraction diffusion equation in a bounded domain. The unknown obstacle is a region where the space dependent variable-order of fractional time derivative of the governing equation deviates from a known homogeneous background one. The observation data is given by the Neumann data of the solution of the governing equation for a specially designed Dirichlet data. Under a suitable jump condition on the deviation, it is shown that the most recent version of the time domain enclosure method enables one to extract information about the geometry of the obstacle and a qualitative nature of the jump, from the observation data.

Inverse parabolic problems of determining functions with one spatial-component independence by Carleman estimate

For an initial-boundary value problem for a parabolic equation in the spatial variable $x=(x_1,.., x_n)$ and time $t$, we consider an inverse problem of determining a coefficient which is independent of one spatial component $x_n$ by extra lateral boundary data. We apply a Carleman estimate to prove a conditional stability estimate for the inverse problem. Also we prove similar results for the corresponding inverse source problem.

Well-posedness for weak and strong solutions of non-homogeneous initial boundary value problems for fractional diffusion equations

We study the well-posedness for initial boundary value problems associated with time fractional diffusion equations with non-homogenous boundary and initial values. We consider both weak and strong solutions for the problems. For weak solutions, we introduce a new definition of solutions which allows to prove the existence of solution to the initial boundary value problems with non-zero initial and boundary values and non-homogeneous terms lying in some arbitrary negative-order Sobolev spaces. For strong solutions, we introduce an optimal compatibility condition and prove the existence of the solutions. We introduce also some sharp conditions guaranteeing the existence of solutions with more regularity in time and space.

Reconstruction and stable recovery of source terms and coefficients appearing in diffusion equations

We consider the inverse source problem of determining a source term depending on both time and space variable for fractional and classical diffusion equations in a cylindrical domain from boundary measurements. With suitable boundary conditions we prove that some class of source terms which are independent of one space direction, can be reconstructed from boundary measurements. Actually, we prove that this inverse problem is well-posed. We establish also some results of Lipschitz stability for the recovery of source terms which we apply to the stable recostruction of time-dependent coefficients.

Uniqueness to some inverse source problems for the wave equation in unbounded domains

This paper is concerned with inverse acoustic source problems in an unbounded domain with dynamical boundary surface data of Dirichlet kind. The measurement data are taken at a surface far away from the source support. We prove uniqueness in recovering source terms of the form $f(x)g(t)$ and $f(x_1,x_2,t) h(x_3)$, where $g(t)$ and $h(x_3)$ are given and $x=(x_1, x_2, x_3)$ is the spatial variable in three dimensions. Without these a priori information, we prove that the boundary data of a family of solutions can be used to recover general source terms depending on both time and spatial variables. For moving point sources radiating periodic signals, the data recorded at four receivers are proven sufficient to uniquely recover the orbit function. Simultaneous determination of embedded obstacles and source terms was verified in an inhomogeneous background medium using the observation data of infinite time period. Our approach depends heavily on the Laplace transform.

A multidimensional Borg-Levinson theorem for magnetic Schrödinger operators with partial spectral data

We consider the multidimensional Borg-Levinson theorem of determining both the magnetic field $dA$ and the electric potential $V$, appearing in the Dirichlet realization of the magnetic Schrödinger operator $H=(-{\rm i}\nabla+A)^2+V$ on a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb R^n$, $n\geq2$, from partial knowledge of the boundary spectral data of $H$. The full boundary spectral data are given by the set $\{(λ_{k},{\partial_νϕ_{k}}_{|\partialΩ}):\ k\geq1\}$, where $\{ λ_k:\ k\in \mathbb N^* \}$ is the non-decreasing sequence of eigenvalues of $H$, $\{ ϕ_k:\ k\in \mathbb N^* \}$ an associated Hilbertian basis of eigenfunctions and $ν$ is the unit outward normal vector to $\partialΩ$. We prove that some asymptotic knowledge of $(λ_{k},{\partial_νϕ_{k}}_{|\partialΩ})$ with respect to $k\geq1$ determines uniquely the magnetic field $dA$ and the electric potential $V$.

An inverse problem for the magnetic Schrödinger equation in infinite cylindrical domains

We study the inverse problem of determining the magnetic field and the electric potential entering the Schrödinger equation in an infinite 3D cylindrical domain, by Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. The cylindrical domain we consider is a closed waveguide in the sense that the cross section is a bounded domain of the plane. We prove that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map determines uniquely, and even Hölder-stably, the magnetic field induced by the magnetic potential and the electric potential. Moreover, if the maximal strength of both the magnetic field and the electric potential, is attained in a fixed bounded subset of the domain, we extend the above results by taking finitely extended boundary observations of the solution, only.

Global uniqueness in an inverse problem for time fractional diffusion equations

Given $(M,g)$, a compact connected Riemannian manifold of dimension $d \geq 2$, with boundary $\partial M$, we consider an initial boundary value problem for a fractional diffusion equation on $(0,T) \times M$, $T>0$, with time-fractional Caputo derivative of order $α\in (0,1) \cup (1,2)$. We prove uniqueness in the inverse problem of determining the smooth manifold $(M,g)$ (up to an isometry), and various time-independent smooth coefficients appearing in this equation, from measurements of the solution on a subset of $\partial M$ at fixed time. In the "flat" case where $M$ is a compact subset of $\mathbb R^d$, two out the three coefficients $ρ$ (weight), $a$ (conductivity) and $q$ (potential) appearing in the equation $ρ\partial_t^αu-\textrm{div}(a \nabla u)+ q u=0$ on $(0,T)\times Ω$ are recovered simultaneously.

Logarithmic stability in determining the time-dependent zero order coefficient in a parabolic equation from a partial Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. Application to the determination of a nonlinear term

We give a new stability estimate for the problem of determining the time-dependent zero order coefficient in a parabolic equation from a partial parabolic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. The novelty of our result is that, contrary to the previous works, we do not need any measurement on the final time. We also show how this result can be used to establish a stability estimate for the problem of determining the nonlinear term in a semilinear parabolic equation from the corresponding "linearized" Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. The key ingredient in our analysis is a parabolic version of an elliptic Carleman inequality due to Bukhgeim and Uhlmann. This parabolic Carleman inequality enters in an essential way in the construction of complex geometric optics solutions that vanish at a part of the lateral boundary.

Recovery of time-dependent coefficient on Riemanian manifold for hyperbolic equations

Given $(M,g)$, a compact connected Riemannian manifold of dimension $d \geq 2$, with boundary $\partial M$, we study the inverse boundary value problem of determining a time-dependent potential $q$, appearing in the wave equation $\partial_t^2u-Δ_g u+q(t,x)u=0$ in $\bar M=(0,T)\times M$ with $T>0$. Under suitable geometric assumptions we prove global unique determination of $q\in L^\infty(\bar M)$ given the Cauchy data set on the whole boundary $\partial \bar M$, or on certain subsets of $\partial \bar M$. Our problem can be seen as an analogue of the Calderón problem on the Lorentzian manifold $(\bar M, dt^2 - g)$.

Recovery of time-dependent damping coefficients and potentials appearing in wave equations from partial data

We consider the inverse problem of determining a time-dependent damping coefficient $a$ and a time-dependent potential $q$, appearing in the wave equation $\partial_t^2u-Δ_x u+a(t,x)\partial_tu+q(t,x)u=0$ in $Q=(0,T)\timesΩ$, with $T>0$ and $Ω$ a $ \mathcal C^2$ bounded domain of $\mathbb R^n$, $n\geq2$, from partial observations of the solutions on $\partial Q$. More precisely, we look for observations on $\partial Q$ that allow to determine uniquely a large class of time-dependent damping coefficients $a$ and time-dependent potentials $q$ without involving an important set of data. We prove global unique determination of $a\in W^{1,p}(Q)$, with $p>n+1$, and $q\in L^\infty(Q)$ from partial observations on $\partial Q$.

Stability result for elliptic inverse periodic coefficient problem by partial Dirichlet-to-Neumann map

We study the inverse problem of identifying a periodic potential perturbation of the Dirichlet Laplacian acting in an infinite cylindrical domain, whose cross section is assumed to be bounded. We prove log-log stable determination of the potential with respect to the partial Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, where the Neumann data is taken on slightly more than half of the boundary of the domain.

An inverse stability result for non compactly supported potentials by one arbitrary lateral Neumann observation

In this paper we investigate the inverse problem of determining the time independent scalar potential of the dynamic Schrödinger equation in an infinite cylindrical domain, from partial measurement of the solution on the boundary. Namely, if the potential is known in a neighborhood of the boundary of the spatial domain, we prove that it can be logarithmic stably determined in the whole waveguide from a single observation of the solution on any arbitrary strip-shaped subset of the boundary.

Double logarithmic stability estimate in the identification of a scalar potential by a partial elliptic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map

We examine the stability issue in the inverse problem of determining a scalar potential appearing in the stationary Schr{ö}dinger equation in a bounded domain, from a partial elliptic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. Namely, the Dirichlet data is imposed on the shadowed face of the boundary of the domain and the Neumann data is measured on its illuminated face. We establish a log log stability estimate for the L2-norm (resp. the H minus 1-norm) of bounded (resp. L2) potentials whose difference is lying in any Sobolev space of order positive order.

On existence and uniqueness of solutions for semilinear fractional wave equations

Let $Ω$ be a $\mathcal C^2$-bounded domain of $\mathbb R^d$, $d=2,3$, and fix $Q=(0,T)\timesΩ$ with $T\in(0,+\infty]$. In the present paper we consider a Dirichlet initial-boundary value problem associated to the semilinear fractional wave equation $\partial_t^αu+\mathcal A u=f_b(u)$ in $Q$ where $1<α<2$, $\partial_t^α$ corresponds to the Caputo fractional derivative of order $α$, $\mathcal A$ is an elliptic operator and the nonlinearity $f_b\in \mathcal C^1( \mathbb R)$ satisfies $f_b(0)=0$ and $|f_b'(u)|\leq C|u|^{b-1}$ for some $b>1$. We first provide a definition of local weak solutions of this problem by applying some properties of the associated linear equation $\partial_t^αu+\mathcal A u=f(t,x)$ in $Q$. Then, we prove existence of local solutions of the semilinear fractional wave equation for some suitable values of $b>1$. Moreover, we obtain an explicit dependence of the time of existence of solutions with respect to the initial data that allows longer time of existence for small initial data.

Stability in the determination of a time-dependent coefficient for wave equations from partial data

We consider the stability in the inverse problem consisting of the determination of a time-dependent coefficient of order zero $q$, appearing in a Dirichlet initial-boundary value problem for a wave equation $\partial_t^2u-Δu+q(t,x)u=0$ in $Q=(0,T)\timesΩ$ with $Ω$ a $C^2$ bounded domain of $\mathbb R^n$, $n\geq2$, from partial observations on $\partial Q$. The observation is given by a boundary operator associated to the wave equation. Using suitable complex geometric optics solutions and Carleman estimates, we prove a stability estimate in the determination of $q$ from the boundary operator.

We prove global unique determination of a coefficient $q\in L^\infty(Q)$ from these observations.

Uniqueness and stability results for an inverse spectral problem in a periodic waveguide

Let $Ω=ω\times\mathbb R$ where $ω\subset \mathbb R^2$ be a bounded domain, and $V : Ω\to\mathbb R$ a bounded potential which is $2π$-periodic in the variable $x_{3}\in \mathbb R$. We study the inverse problem consisting in the determination of $V$, through the boundary spectral data of the operator $u\mapsto Au := -Δu + Vu$, acting on $L^2(ω\times(0,2π))$, with quasi-periodic and Dirichlet boundary conditions. More precisely we show that if for two potentials $V_{1}$ and $V_{2}$ we denote by $(λ_{1,k})_{k}$ and $(λ_{2,k})_{k}$ the eigenvalues associated to the operators $A_{1}$ and $A_{2}$ (that is the operator $A$ with $V := V_{1}$ or $V:=V_{2}$), then if $λ_{1,k} - λ_{2,k} \to 0$ as $k \to \infty$ we have that $V_{1} \equiv V_{2}$, provided one knows also that $\sum_{k\geq 1}\|ψ_{1,k} - ψ_{2,k}\|_{L^2(\partialω\times[0,2π])}^2 < \infty$, where $ψ_{m,k} := \partialϕ_{m,k}/\partial{\bf n}$. We establish also an optimal Lipschitz stability estimate. The arguments developed here may be applied to other spectral inverse problems, and similar results can be obtained.

Carleman estimate for infinite cylindrical quantum domains and application to inverse problems

We consider the inverse problem of determining the time independent scalar potential of the dynamic Schrödinger equation in an infinite cylindrical domain, from one Neumann boundary observation of the solution. Assuming that this potential is known outside some fixed compact subset of the waveguide, we prove that it may be Lipschitz stably retrieved by choosing the Dirichlet boundary condition of the system suitably. Since the proof is by means of a global Carleman estimate designed specifically for the Schrödinger operator acting in an unbounded cylindrical domain, the Neumann data is measured on an infinitely extended subboundary of the cylinder.

Heat trace asymptotics and compactness of isospectral potentials for the Dirichlet Laplacian

Let $Ω$ be a $C^\infty$-smooth bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n \geq 1$, and let the matrix ${\bf a} \in C^\infty (\overlineΩ;\R^{n^2})$ be symmetric and uniformly elliptic. We consider the $L^2(Ω)$-realization $A$ of the operator $-\mydiv ( {\bf a} \nabla \cdot)$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We perturb $A$ by some real valued potential $V \in C_0^\infty (Ω)$ and note $A_V=A+V$. We compute the asymptotic expansion of $\mbox{tr}\left( e^{-t A_V}-e^{-t A}\right)$ as $t \downarrow 0$ for any matrix ${\bf a}$ whose coefficients are homogeneous of degree $0$. In the particular case where $A$ is the Dirichlet Laplacian in $Ω$, that is when ${\bf a}$ is the identity of $\R^{n^2}$, we make the four main terms appearing in the asymptotic expansion formula explicit and prove that $L^\infty$-bounded sets of isospectral potentials of $A$ are $H^s$-compact for $s <2$.

Stability of the determination of a coefficient for the wave equation in an infinite wave guide

We consider the stability in the inverse problem consisting in the determination of an electric potential $q$, appearing in a Dirichlet initial-boundary value problem for the wave equation $\partial_t^2u-Δu+q(x)u=0$ in an unbounded wave guide $Ω=ω\times\mathbb R$ with $ω$ a bounded smooth domain of $\mathbb R^2$, from boundary observations. The observation is given by the Dirichlet to Neumann map associated to a wave equation. We prove a Hölder stability estimate in the determination of $q$ from the Dirichlet to Neumann map. Moreover, provided that the gap between two electric potentials rich its maximum in a fixed bounded subset of $\barΩ$, we extend this result to the same inverse problem with measurements on a bounded subset of the lateral boundary $(0,T)\times\partialΩ$.

Local energy decay for the wave equation with a time-periodic non-trapping metric and moving obstacle

Consider the mixed problem with Dirichelet condition associated to the wave equation $\partial_t^2u-\Div_{x}(a(t,x)\nabla_{x}u)=0$, where the scalar metric $a(t,x)$ is $T$-periodic in $t$ and uniformly equal to 1 outside a compact set in $x$, on a $T$-periodic domain. Let $\mathcal U(t, 0)$ be the associated propagator. Assuming that the perturbations are non-trapping, we prove the meromorphic continuation of the cut-off resolvent of the Floquet operator $\mathcal U(T, 0)$ and establish sufficient conditions for local energy decay.

Stability of the determination of a time-dependent coefficient in parabolic equations

We establish a Lipschitz stability estimate for the inverse problem consisting in the determination of the coefficient $σ(t)$, appearing in a Dirichlet initial-boundary value problem for the parabolic equation $\partial_tu-Δ_x u+σ(t)f(x)u=0$, from Neumann boundary data. We extend this result to the same inverse problem when the previous linear parabolic equation in changed to the semi-linear parabolic equation $\partial_tu-Δ_x u=F(t,x,σ(t),u(x,t))$.

Stability result for a time dependent potential in a waveguide

We consider the operator $H:= \partial_t -Δ+V$ in 2D or 3D waveguide. With an adapted global Carleman estimate with singular weight functions we give a stability result for the time dependent part of the potential for this particular geometry. Two cases are considered: the bounded waveguide with mixed Dirichlet and Neumann conditions and the open waveguide with Dirichlet boundary conditions.

Cauchy problem for semilinear wave equation with time-dependent metrics

We establish the existence of weak solutions $u$ of the semilinear wave equation $\partial_t^2 u-\textrm{div}_x(a(t,x)\nabla_xu)=f_k(u)$ where $a(t,x)$ is equal to $1$ outside a compact set with respect to $x$ and a non-linear term $f_k$ which satisfies $\vert f_k(u)\vert\leq C\vert u\vert^k$. For some non-trapping time-periodic perturbations $a(t,x)$, we obtain the long time existence of solution for small initial data.

We assume $a(t,x)$ is a non-trapping perturbation and moreover, we suppose that there are no resonances $z_j\in\mathbb{C}$ with $|z_j|\geq1$.

Local energy decay in even dimensions for the wave equation with a time-periodic non-trapping metric and applications to Strichartz estimates

We obtain local energy decay as well as global Strichartz estimates for the solutions $u$ of the wave equation $\partial_t^2 u-div_x(a(t,x)\nabla_xu)=0,\ t\in{\R},\ x\in{\R}^n,$ with time-periodic non-trapping metric $a(t,x)$ equal to $1$ outside a compact set with respect to $x$. We suppose that the cut-off resolvent $R_χ(θ)=χ(\mathcal U(T, 0)-e^{-iθ})^{-1}χ$, where $\mathcal U(T, 0)$ is the monodromy operator and $T$ the period of $a(t,x)$, admits an holomorphic continuation to $\{θ\in\mathbb{C}\ :\ \textrm{Im}(θ) \geq 0\}$, for $n \geq 3$ , odd, and to $\{ θ\in\mathbb C\ :\ \textrm{Im}(θ)\geq0,\ θ\neq 2kπ-iμ,\ k\in\mathbb{Z},\ μ\geq0\}$ for $n \geq4$, even, and for $n \geq4$ even $R_χ(θ)$ is bounded in a neighborhood of $θ=0$.

On the meromorphic continuation of the resolvent for the wave equation with time-periodic perturbation and applications

Consider the wave equation $\partial_t^2u-Δ_xu+V(t,x)u=0$, where $x\in\R^n$ with $n\geq3$ and $V(t,x)$ is $T$-periodic in time and decays exponentially in space. Let $ U(t,0)$ be the associated propagator and let $R(θ)=e^{-D<x>}(U(T,0)-e^{-iθ})^{-1}e^{-D<x>}$ be the resolvent of the Floquet operator $U(T,0)$ defined for $\im(θ)>BT $ with $B>0$ sufficiently large. We establish a meromorphic continuation of $R(θ)$ from which we deduce the asymptotic expansion of $e^{-(D+ε)<x>}U(t,0)e^{-D<x>}f$, where $f\in \dot{H}^1(\R^n)\times L^2(\R^n)$, as $t\to+\infty$ with a remainder term whose energy decays exponentially when $n$ is odd and a remainder term whose energy is bounded with respect to $t^l\log(t)^m$, with $l,m\in\mathbb Z$, when $n$ is even. Then, assuming that $R(θ)$ has no poles lying in $\{θ\in\C\ :\ \im(θ)\geq0\}$ and is bounded for $θ\to0$, we obtain local energy decay as well as global Strichartz estimates for the solutions of $\partial_t^2u-Δ_xu+V(t,x)u=F(t,x)$.
