Isochrons, Phase Response and Synchronization Dynamics of Tunable Photonic Oscillators

The global structure of the Isochrons and the corresponding Phase Response Curves are, for the first time, investigated and numerically computed for the fundamental photonic oscillator consisted of an Optically Injected Laser. Their crucial role in the synchronization dynamics under a periodic modulation of the injection beam is shown, along with their capability for providing conditions for stable phase-locking and periodic outputs with discrete equidistant spectra in the form of frequency combs.

Analytical Calculation of the Orbital Spectrum of the Guiding Center Motion in Axisymmetric Magnetic Fields

Charged particle motion in axisymmetric toroidal magnetic fields is analyzed within the context of the canonical Hamiltonian Guiding Center theory. A canonical transformation to variables measuring the drift orbit deviation from a magnetic field line is introduced and an analytical transformation to Action-Angle variables is obtained, under a zero drift width approximation. The latter is used to provide compact formulas for the orbital spectrum of the drift motion, namely the bounce/transit frequencies as well as the bounce/transit averaged toroidal precession and gyration frequencies. These formulas are shown to have a remarkable agreement with numerically calculated full drift width frequencies and significant differences with standard analytical formulas based on a pendulum-like Hamiltonian description. The analytical knowledge of the orbital spectrum is crucial for the formulation of particle resonance conditions with symmetry breaking perturbations and the study of the resulting particle, energy and momentum transport.

Spatial Control of Localized Oscillations in Arrays of Coupled Laser Dimers

Arrays of coupled semiconductor lasers are systems possessing radically complex dynamics that makes them useful for numerous applications in beam forming and beam shaping. In this work, we investigate the spatial controllability of oscillation amplitudes in an array of coupled photonic dimers, each consisting of two semiconductor lasers driven by differential pumping rates. We consider parameter values for which each dimer's stable phase-locked state has become unstable through a Hopf bifurcation and we show that, by assigning appropriate pumping rate values to each dimer, large-amplitude oscillations coexist with negligibly small amplitude oscillations. The spatial profile? of the amplitude of oscillations across the array can be dynamically controlled by appropriate pumping rate values in each dimer. This feature is shown to be quite robust, even for random detuning between the lasers, and suggests a mechanism for dynamically reconfigurable production of a large diversity of spatial profiles of laser amplitude oscillations.

Radically Tunable Ultrafast Photonic Oscillators via Differential Pumping

We present the controllability capabilities for the limit cycles of an extremely tunable photonic oscillator, consisting of two coupled semiconductor lasers. We show that this system supports stable limit cycles with frequencies ranging from a few to more than a hundred GHz that are characterized by a widely varying degree of asymmetry between the oscillations of the two lasers. These dynamical features are directly controllable via differential pumping as well as optical frequency detuning of the two lasers, suggesting a multi-functional oscillator for chip-scale radio-frequency photonics applications.

Soliton dynamics in symmetric and non-symmetric complex potentials

Soliton propagation dynamics under the presence of a complex potential are investigated. A large variety of qualitatively different potentials, including periodic, semi-infinite periodic and localized potentials, is considered. Cases of both symmetric and non-symmetric potentials are studied in terms of their effect on soliton dynamics. The rich set of dynamical features of soliton propagation include dynamical trapping, periodic and non-periodic soliton mass variation and non-reciprocal scattering dynamics. These features are systematically investigated with the utilization of an effective particle phase space approach which is shown in remarkable agreement with direct numerical simulations. The generality of the results enables the consideration of potential applications where the inhomogeneity of the gain and loss is appropriately engineered in order to provide desirable soliton dynamics.

Power and momentum dependent soliton dynamics in lattices with longitudinal modulation

Soliton dynamics in a large variety of longitudinally modulated lattices are studied in terms of phase space analysis for an effective particle approach and direct numerical simulations. Complex soliton dynamics are shown to depend strongly on both their power/width and their initial momentum as well as on lattice parameters. A rish set of qualitatively distinct dynamical features of soliton propagation that have no counterpart in longitudinally uniform lattices is illustrated. This set includes cases of enhanced soliton mobility, dynamical switching, extended trapping in several transverse lattice periods, and quasiperiodic trapping, which are promising for soliton control applications.

Spatiotemporal interaction of optical beams in bi-dispersive media

The interaction of optical beams in bi-dispersive nonlinear media with self-focusing nonlinearity is numerically investigated. Under proper conditions, the interaction of spatially separated beams can lead to the creation of two prominent filaments along the other spatial or temporal dimension and, thus to an effective beam exchange. This X-wave generation-based effect could potentially be exploited in optical realizations of spatial or spatio-temporal filtering.
