Loop induced top quark FCNC through top quark and dark matter interactions

We present a comprehensive analysis of the loop induced top quark FCNC signals at the LHC within one class of the simplified model. The loop level FCNC interactions are well motivated to avoid the hierarchy of the top quark couplings from the new physics and standard model. Such a theory will posit a Majorana dark matter candidate and could be tested through dark matter relic density, direct detection experiments (the scattering between dark matter and heavy nuclei), and the collider signals at the LHC. We find that the spin-independent (SI) scattering between Majorana dark matter and nuclei will vanish at the leading order, while the next-to-leading order correction to the SI scattering becomes significance to constrain the parameter space of the model. A detailed comparison from direct detection experiments and LHC searches is also discussed and both of them are very important to full constrain the model.

The Role of the Hercules Autonomous Vehicle During the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Autonomous Logistic Vehicle for Contactless Goods Transportation

Since early 2020, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly across the world. As at the date of writing this article, the disease has been globally reported in 223 countries and regions, infected over 108 million people and caused over 2.4 million deaths (https://covid19.who.int/, accessed on Feb. 17, 2021). Avoiding person-to-person transmission is an effective approach to control and prevent the pandemic. However, many daily activities, such as transporting goods in our daily life, inevitably involve person-to-person contact. Using an autonomous logistic vehicle to achieve contact-less goods transportation could alleviate this issue. For example, it can reduce the risk of virus transmission between the driver and customers. Moreover, many countries have imposed tough lockdown measures to reduce the virus transmission (e.g., retail, catering) during the pandemic, which causes inconveniences for human daily life. Autonomous vehicle can deliver the goods bought by humans, so that humans can get the goods without going out. These demands motivate us to develop an autonomous vehicle, named as Hercules, for contact-less goods transportation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The vehicle is evaluated through real-world delivering tasks under various traffic conditions.

LHC searches for heavy neutral Higgs bosons with a top jet substructure analysis

We study the LHC searches for the heavy $CP$-odd Higgs boson $A$ and $CP$-even Higgs boson $H$ in the context of general two-Higgs-doublet model. Specifically, we consider the decay mode of $A/H\to t \bar t $ through the $b \bar b$ or $t \bar t $ associated production channels. In the so-called "alignment limit" of the two-Higgs-doublet model, this decay mode can be the most dominant one. By employing the HEPTopTagger and the multi-variable-analysis method, we present the search sensitivities for both $CP$-odd Higgs boson $A$ and $CP$-even Higgs boson $H$ via these channels at the high-luminosity LHC runs.

Semantic Scan: Detecting Subtle, Spatially Localized Events in Text Streams

Early detection and precise characterization of emerging topics in text streams can be highly useful in applications such as timely and targeted public health interventions and discovering evolving regional business trends. Many methods have been proposed for detecting emerging events in text streams using topic modeling. However, these methods have numerous shortcomings that make them unsuitable for rapid detection of locally emerging events on massive text streams. In this paper, we describe Semantic Scan (SS) that has been developed specifically to overcome these shortcomings in detecting new spatially compact events in text streams. Semantic Scan integrates novel contrastive topic modeling with online document assignment and principled likelihood ratio-based spatial scanning to identify emerging events with unexpected patterns of keywords hidden in text streams. This enables more timely and accurate detection and characterization of anomalous, spatially localized emerging events. Semantic Scan does not require manual intervention or labeled training data, and is robust to noise in real-world text data since it identifies anomalous text patterns that occur in a cluster of new documents rather than an anomaly in a single new document. We compare Semantic Scan to alternative state-of-the-art methods such as Topics over Time, Online LDA, and Labeled LDA on two real-world tasks: (i) a disease surveillance task monitoring free-text Emergency Department chief complaints in Allegheny County, and (ii) an emerging business trend detection task based on Yelp reviews. On both tasks, we find that Semantic Scan provides significantly better event detection and characterization accuracy than competing approaches, while providing up to an order of magnitude speedup.

The Diphoton Excess, Low Energy Theorem and the 331 Model

We interpret the diphoton anomaly as a heavy scalar $H_3$ in the so-called 331 model. The scalar is responsible for breaking the $SU(3)_C\otimes SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X$ gauge symmetry down to the standard model electroweak gauge group. It mainly couples to the standard model gluons and photons through quantum loops involving heavy quarks and leptons. Those quarks and leptons, in together with the SM quarks and leptons, form the fundamental representation of the 331 model. We use low energy theorem to calculate effective coupling of $H_3gg$, $H_3γγ$, $H_3ZZ$, $H_3WW$ and $H_3Zγ$. The analytical results can be applied to new physics models satisfying the low energy theorem. We show that the heavy quark and lepton contribution cannot produce enough diphoton pairs. It is crucial to include the contribution of charged scalars to explain the diphoton excess. The extra neutral $Z^\prime$ boson could also explain the 2 TeV diboson excess observed at the LHC Run-I.

Light Doubly Charged Higgs Boson via the $WW^*$ Channel at LHC

The doubly charged Higgs bosons $H^{\pm\pm}$ searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have been studied extensively and strong bound is available for $H^{\pm\pm}$ dominantly decaying into a pair of same-sign di-leptons. In this paper we point out that there is a large cavity in the light $H^{\pm\pm}$ mass region left unexcluded. In particular, $H^{\pm\pm}$ can dominantly decay into $WW$ or $WW^*$ (For instance, in the type-II seesaw mechanism the triplet acquires a vacuum expectation value around 1 GeV.), and then it is found that $H^{\pm\pm}$ with mass even below $2m_W$ remains untouched by the current collider searches. Searching for such a $H^{\pm\pm}$ at the LHC is the topic of this paper. We perform detailed signal and background simulation, especially including the non-prompt $t\bar{t}$ background which is the dominant one nevertheless ignored before. We show that such $H^{\pm\pm}$ should be observable at the 14 TeV LHC with 10-30 fb$^{-1}$ integrated luminosity.

Natural $X$-ray Lines from the Low Scale Supersymmetry Breaking

In the supersymmetric models with low scale supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking where the gravitino mass is around keV, we show that the 3.5 keV $X-$ray lines can be explained naturally through several different mechanisms: (I) A keV scale dark gaugino plays the role of sterile neutrino in the presence of bilinear $R-$partiy violation. Because the light dark gaugino obtains Majorana mass only via gravity mediation, it is a decaying warm dark matter (DM) candidate; (II) Compressed cold DM states, whose mass degeneracy is broken by gavity mediated SUSY breaking, emit such a line via the heavier one decay into the lighter one plus photon(s). A highly supersymmetric dark sector may readily provide such kind of system; (III) Light axino, whose mass again is around the gravitino mass, decays to neutrino plus gamma in the $R-$partiy violating SUSY. Moreover, we comment on dark radiation from dark gaugino.

Testing LHT at the LHC Run-II

We study the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity (LHT) in the process of $pp \to W_H^+W_H^- \to W^+W^- A_H A_H$ at the 14 TeV LHC. With the $W$-jet tagging technique, we demonstrate that the bulk of the model parameter space can be probed at the level of more than $5σ$ in the signature of two fat $W$-jets plus large missing energy. Furthermore, we propose a novel strategy of measuring the principle parameter $f$ that is crucial to testify the LHT model and to fix mass spectrum, including dark matter particle. Our proposal can be easily incorporated into current experimental program of diboson searches at the LHC Run-II.

Higgs Boson Mass and Complex Snuetrino Dark Matter in the Supersymmetric Inverse Seesaw Models

The discovery of a relatively heavy Standard Model (SM) -like Higgs boson challenges naturalness of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) from both Higgs and dark matter (DM) sectors. We study these two aspects in the MSSM extended by the low-scale inverse seesaw mechanism. Firstly, it admits a sizable radiative correction on the Higgs boson mass m_h, up to \sim 4 GeV in the case of an IR-fixed point of the coupling Y_νLH_uν^c and a large sneutrino mixing. Secondly, the lightest sneutrino, highly complex as expected, is a viable thermal DM candidate. Owing to the correct relic density and XENON100, two cases survive: a Higgs-portal complex DM with mass lying around the Higgs pole or above $W$ threshold, and a coannihilating DM with slim prospect of detection. Given an extra family of sneutrinos, both scenarios naturally work when we attempt to suppress the DM left-handed sneutrino component, confronting with enhancing m_h.

LHC searches for the CP-odd Higgs by the jet substructure analysis

The LHC searches for the CP-odd Higgs boson is studied (with masses from 300 GeV to 1 TeV) in the context of the general two-Higgs-doublet model. With the discovery of the 125 GeV Higgs boson at the LHC, we highlight one promising discovery channel of the hZ. This channel can become significant after the global signal fitting to the 125 GeV Higgs boson in the general two-Higgs-doublet model. It is particularly important in the scenario where two CP-even Higgs bosons in the two-Higgs-doublet model have the common mass of 125 GeV. Since the final states involve a Standard-Model-like Higgs boson, we apply the jet substructure analysis of the fat Higgs jet in order to eliminate the Standard Model background sufficiently. After performing the kinematic cuts, we present the LHC search sensitivities for the CP-odd Higgs boson with mass up to 1 TeV via this channel.

MT2 to the Rescue -- Searching for Sleptons in Compressed Spectra at the LHC

We propose a novel method for probing sleptons in compressed spectra at hadron colliders. The process under study is slepton pair production in R-parity conserving supersymmetry, where the slepton decays to a neutralino LSP of mass close to the slepton mass. In order to pass the trigger and obtain large missing energy, an energetic mono-jet is required. Both leptons need to be detected in order to suppress large standard model backgrounds with one charged lepton. We study variables that can be used to distinguish the signal from the remaining major backgrounds, which include tt, WW+jet, Z+jet, and single top production. We find that the dilepton MT2, bound by the mass difference, can be used as an upper bound to efficiently reduce the backgrounds. It is estimated that sleptons with masses up to about 150 GeV can be discovered at the 14 TeV LHC with 100/fb integrated luminosity.

Highlights of Supersymmetric Hypercharge $\pm1$ Triplets

The discovery of a standard model (SM)-like Higgs boson with a relatively heavy mass $m_h$ and hints of di-photon excess has deep implication to supersymmetric standard models (SSMs). We consider the SSM extended with hypercharge $\pm1$ triplets, and investigate two scenarios of it: (A) Triplets significantly couple to the Higgs doublets, which can substantially raise $m_h$ and simultaneously enhance the Higgs to di-photon rate via light chargino loops; (B) Oppositely, these couplings are quite weak and thus $m_h$ can not be raised. But the doubly-charged Higgs bosons, owing to the gauge group structure, naturally interprets why there is an excess rather than a deficient of Higgs to di-photon rate. Additionally, the pseudo Dirac triplet fermion is an inelastic non-thermal dark matter candidate. Light doubly-charged particles, especially the doubly-charged Higgs boson around 100 GeV in scenario B, are predicted. We give a preliminary discussion on their search at the LHC.

Simplified Supersymmetry with Sneutrino LSP at 8 TeV LHC

The current searches of supersymmetry (SUSY) are based on the neutralino lightest sparticle (LSP). In this article we instead focus on SUSY with sneutrino LSP. It is well motivated in many contexts, especially in which sneutrino services as a dark matter candidate. We first develop a simplified model, which contains the stop, chagino/neutralino and sneutrino, to describe the LHC phenomenologies of a large class of models with sneutrino LSP. Then we investigate bounds on the model using the SUSY searches at the 8 TeV LHC. Strong exclusion limits are derived, e.g., masses of stop and chargino can be excluded up to about 900 GeV and 550 GeV, respectively. We also propose optimizations for some searches without turning to higher energy and luminosity.

A Rediatively Light Stop Saves the Best Global Fit for Higgs Boson Mass and Decays

The LHC discovered the Standard Model (SM) like Higgs boson with mass around 125 GeV. However, there exist hints of deviations from Higgs decays. Including the Tevatron data, the deviations can be explained by the extremely mixed stop sector in the sense of best global fit (BGF). We analyze the relations among the competing reduced coupling hGG, Higgs boson mass, and LHC stop mass m_{\wt t_1} lower bound at the tree- and one-loop level. In particular, we point out that we use the light stop running mass in the Higgs boson mass calculation while the light stop pole mass in the Higgs decays. So the gluino radiative correction on the light stop mass plays the crucial role. Its large negative correction saves the GBF in the Minimal Supersymmetric SM (MSSM) and the next to the MSSM (NMSSM) constrained by the perturbativity. Moreover, a light stop is predicted: in the MSSM if we set the gluino mass M_3\lesssim4 TeV, we have m_{\wt t_1}<m_t; while in the NMSSM, imposing the least tuning condition we get m_{\wt t_1}\simeq130 GeV for M_3\simeq1.5 TeV.

Brightening the (130 GeV) Gamma-Ray Line

The gamma-ray line from dark matter (DM) annihilation is too weak to observe, but its observation will uncover much information, e.g., the DM mass and an nomalously large annihilation rate $\sim0.1$ pb into di-photon. In this work, we construct a minimal effective theory (EFT) incorporating DM and heavier charged particles. A large annihilation rate is obtained from operator coefficients with resonance or strong coupling enhancement. The EFT is stringently constrained by the XENON100 and WMAP data. Without resonance, Dirac DM or colored charged particles are ruled out. It is pointed out that the di-gluon mode may correctly determine the DM relic density. Interestingly, this framework also provides an origin for the Higgs di-photon excess at the LHC\@. We apply the general analysis to the NMSSM, which can elegantly interpret the tentative 130 GeV gamma-ray line. A top-window model is also proposed to explain the gamma-ray line.
