Logarithmic improvements in the Weyl law and exponential bounds on the number of closed geodesics are predominant

Let $M$ be a smooth compact manifold of dimension $d$ without boundary. We introduce the concept of predominance for Riemannian metrics on $M$, a notion analogous to full Lebesgue measure which, in particular, implies density. We show that for a predominant metric, the number of closed geodesics of length smaller than $T$ has a stretched exponential upper bound in $T$. In addition, we study remainders in the Weyl law for predominant metrics. The Weyl law states that the number of Laplace-Beltrami eigenvalues smaller than $λ^2$ is asymptotic to $Cλ^d$ with an $O(λ^{d-1})$ error. We show that, for a predominant metric, the estimate on the error can by improved by a power of $\log λ$. After an application of recent results of the authors in the case of the Weyl law, these estimates follow from a study of the non-degeneracy properties of nearly closed orbits for predominant sets of metrics.

Weyl remainders: an application of geodesic beams

We obtain new quantitative estimates on Weyl Law remainders under dynamical assumptions on the geodesic flow. On a smooth compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ of dimension $n$, let $Π_λ$ denote the kernel of the spectral projector for the Laplacian, $\mathbb{1}_{[0,λ^2]}(-Δ_g)$. Assuming only that the set of near periodic geodesics over $W\subset M$ has small measure, we prove that as $λ\to \infty$ $$ \int_{W} Π_λ(x,x)dx=(2π)^{-n}\text{vol}_{\mathbb{R}^n}(B)\text{vol}_g(W)\,λ^n+O\Big(\frac{λ^{n-1}}{\log λ}\Big),$$ where $B$ is the unit ball. One consequence of this result is that the improved remainder holds on all product manifolds, in particular giving improved estimates for the eigenvalue counting function in the product setup. Our results also include logarithmic gains on asymptotics for the off-diagonal spectral projector $Π_λ(x,y)$ under the assumption that the set of geodesics that pass near both $x$ and $y$ has small measure, and quantitative improvements for Kuznecov sums under non-looping type assumptions. The key technique used in our study of the spectral projector is that of geodesic beams.

Eigenfunction concentration via geodesic beams

In this article we develop new techniques for studying concentration of Laplace eigenfunctions $ϕ_λ$ as their frequency, $λ$, grows. The method consists of controlling $ϕ_λ(x)$ by decomposing $ϕ_λ$ into a superposition of geodesic beams that run through the point $x$. Each beam is localized in phase-space on a tube centered around a geodesic whose radius shrinks slightly slower than $λ^{-\frac{1}{2}}$. We control $ϕ_λ(x)$ by the $L^2$-mass of $ϕ_λ$ on each geodesic tube and derive a purely dynamical statement through which $ϕ_λ(x)$ can be studied. In particular, we obtain estimates on $ϕ_λ(x)$ by decomposing the set of geodesic tubes into those that are non self-looping for time $T$ and those that are. This approach allows for quantitative improvements, in terms of $T$, on the available bounds for $L^\infty$ norms, $L^p$ norms, pointwise Weyl laws, and averages over submanifolds.

Local Universality for Zeros and Critical Points of Monochromatic Random Waves

This paper concerns the asymptotic behavior of zeros and critical points for monochromatic random waves $ϕ_λ$ of frequency $λ$ on a compact, smooth, Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ as $λ\rightarrow \infty$. We prove that the measure of integration over the zero set of $ϕ_λ$ restricted to balls of radius $\approx λ^{-1}$ converges in distribution to the measure of integration over the zero set of a frequency $1$ random wave on $\mathbb R^n$, where $n$ is the dimension of $M$. We also prove convergence of finite moments for the counting measure of the critical points of ϕλ, again restricted to balls of radius $\approx λ^{-1}$, to the corresponding moments for frequency $1$ random waves. We then patch together these local results to obtain new global variance estimates on the volume of the zero set and numbers of critical points of $ϕ_λ$ on all of $M.$ Our local results hold under conditions about the structure of geodesics on $M$ that are generic in the space of all metrics on $M$, while our global results hold whenever $(M,g)$ has no conjugate points (e.g is negatively curved).

C-infinity Scaling Asymptotics for the Spectral Function of the Laplacian

This article concerns new off-diagonal estimates on the remainder and its derivatives in the pointwise Weyl law on a compact n-dimensional Riemannian manifold. As an application, we prove that near any non self-focal point, the scaling limit of the spectral projector of the Laplacian onto frequency windows of constant size is a normalized Bessel function depending only on n.

Topology and nesting of the zero set components of monochromatic random waves

This paper is dedicated to the study of the topologies and nesting configurations of the components of the zero set of monochromatic random waves. We prove that the probability of observing any diffeomorphism type, and any nesting arrangement, among the zero set components is strictly positive for waves of large enough frequencies. Our results are a consequence of building Laplace eigenfunctions in Euclidean space whose zero sets have a component with prescribed topological type, or an arrangement of components with prescribed nesting configuration.

Gaussian measures on the of space of Riemannian metrics

We introduce Gaussian-type measures on the manifold of all metrics with a fixed volume form on a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $\geq 3$. For this random model we compute the characteristic function for the $L^2$ (Ebin) distance to the reference metric. In the Appendix, we study Lipschitz-type distance between Riemannian metrics and give applications to the diameter, eigenvalue and volume entropy functionals.

Nodal sets of Schrödinger eigenfunctions in forbidden regions

This note concerns the nodal sets of eigenfunctions of semiclassical Schrödinger operators acting on compact, smooth, Riemannian manifolds, with no boundary. We prove that if H is a separating hypersurface that lies inside the classically forbidden region, then H cannot persist as a component of the zero set of infinitely many eigenfunctions. In addition, on real analytic surfaces, we obtain sharp upper bounds for the number of intersections of the zero sets of the Schrödinger eigenfunctions with a fixed curve that lies inside the classically forbidden region.

Scaling Limit for the Kernel of the Spectral Projector and Remainder Estimates in the Pointwise Weyl Law

Let (M, g) be a compact smooth Riemannian manifold. We obtain new off-diagonal estimates as λ tend to infinity for the remainder in the pointwise Weyl Law for the kernel of the spectral projector of the Laplacian onto functions with frequency at most λ. A corollary is that, when rescaled around a non self-focal point, the kernel of the spectral projector onto the frequency interval (λ, λ+ 1] has a universal scaling limit as λ goes to infinity (depending only on the dimension of M). Our results also imply that if M has no conjugate points, then immersions of M into Euclidean space by an orthonormal basis of eigenfunctions with frequencies in (λ, λ+ 1] are embeddings for all λ sufficiently large.

High Frequency Eigenfunction Immersions and Supremum Norms of Random Waves

A compact Riemannian manifold may be immersed into Euclidean space by using high frequency Laplace eigenfunctions. We study the geometry of the manifold viewed as a metric space endowed with the distance function from the ambient Euclidean space. As an application we give a new proof of a result of Burq-Lebeau and others on upper bounds for the sup-norms of random linear combinations of high frequency eigenfunctions.

Mean of the $L^\infty$-norm for $L^2$-normalized random waves on compact aperiodic Riemannian manifolds

This article concerns upper bounds for $L^\infty$-norms of random approximate eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator on a compact aperiodic Riemannian manifold $(M,g).$ We study $f_λ$ chosen uniformly at random from the space of $L^2$-normalized linear combinations of Laplace eigenfunctions with eigenvalues in the interval $(λ^2, \lr{λ+1}^2].$ Our main result is that the expected value of $\norm{f_λ}_\infty$ grows at most like $C \sqrt{\log λ}$ as $λ\to \infty$, where $C$ is an explicit constant depending only on the dimension and volume of $(M,g).$ In addition, we obtain concentration of the $L^\infty$-norm around its mean and median and study the analogous problems for Gaussian random waves on $(M,g).$

On the distribution of perturbations of propagated Schrödinger eigenfunctions

Let $(M,g_0)$ be a compact Riemmanian manifold of dimension $n$. Let $P_0 (\h) := -\h^2Δ_{g}+V$ be the semiclassical Schrödinger operator for $\h \in (0,\h_0]$, and let $E$ be a regular value of its principal symbol $p_0(x,ξ)=|ξ|^2_{g_0(x)} +V(x)$. Write $φ_\h$ for an $L^2$-normalized eigenfunction of $P(\h)$, $P_0(\h)φ_\h =E(\h)φ_\h$ and $E(\h) \in [E-o(1),E+ o(1)]$. Consider a smooth family of perturbations $g_u$ of $g_0$ with $u$ in the ball $\mathcal B^k(\varepsilon) \subset \mathbb R^k$ of radius $\varepsilon>0$. For $P_{u}(\h) := -\h^2 Δ_{g_u} +V$ and small $|t|$, we define the propagated perturbed eigenfunctions $$φ_\h^{(u)}:=e^{-\frac{i}{\h}t P_u(\h)} φ_\h.$$ We study the distribution of the real part of the perturbed eigenfunctions regarded as random variables $$\Re (φ^{(\cdot)}_\h(x)):\mathcal B^{k}(\varepsilon) \to \mathbb R \quad \quad \text{for}\;\, x\in M.$$ In particular, when $(M,g)$ is ergodic, we compute the $h \to 0^+$ asymptotics of the variance $\text{Var} [\Re (φ^{(\cdot)}_\h(x))] $ and show that all odd moments vanish as $h \to 0^+.$

On the multiplicity of eigenvalues of conformally covariant operators

Let $(M,g)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold and $P_g$ an elliptic, formally self-adjoint, conformally covariant operator of order $m$ acting on smooth sections of a bundle over $M$. We prove that if $P_g$ has no rigid eigenspaces (see Definition 2.2), the set of functions $f \in C^\infty(M, R)$ for which $P_{e^fg}$ has only simple non-zero eigenvalues is a residual set in $C^\infty(M,R)$. As a consequence we prove that if $P_g$ has no rigid eigenspaces for a dense set of metrics, then all non-zero eigenvalues are simple for a residual set of metrics in the $C^m$-topology. We also prove that the eigenvalues of $P_g$ depend continuously on $g$ in the $C^m$-topology, provided $P_g$ is strongly elliptic. As an application of our work, we show that if $P_g$ acts on $C^\infty(M)$ (e.g. GJMS operators), its non-zero eigenvalues are generically simple.

Nullspaces of Conformally Invariant Operators. Applications to $Q_{k}$-curvature

We study conformal invariants that arise from functions in the nullspace of conformally covariant differential operators. The invariants include nodal sets and the topology of nodal domains of eigenfunctions in the kernel of GJMS operators. We establish that on any manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$, there exist many metrics for which our invariants are nontrivial. We discuss new applications to curvature prescription problems.
