On the thermal line emission from the outflows in ultraluminous X-ray sources

The atomic features in the X-ray spectra of the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) may be associated with the outflow (Middleton et al. 2015), which may provide a way to explore the physics of the ULXs. We construct a conical outflow model, and calculate the thermal X-ray Fe emission lines from the outflows. Our results show that thermal line luminosity decreases with increasing outflow velocity or/and opening angle of the outflow for a fixed kinetic power of the outflows. Assuming the kinetic power of the outflows to be comparable with the accretion power in the ULXs, we find that the equivalent width can be several eV for the thermal X-ray Fe emission line from the outflows in the ULXs with stellar mass black holes. The thermal line luminosity is proportional to 1/M (M is the black hole mass of the ULX). The equivalent width decreases with the black hole mass, which implies that the Fe line emission from the outflows can hardly be detected if the ULXs contain intermediate mass black holes. Our results suggest that the thermal X-ray Fe line emission should be preferentially be detected in the ULXs with high kinetic power slowly moving outflows from the accretion disks surrounding stellar mass black holes/neutron stars. The recent observed X-ray atomic features of the outflows in the ULX may imply that it contains a stellar mass black hole/neutron star (Pinto et al. 2016).

Anisotropic radiation from accretion disc-coronae in active galactic nuclei

In the unification scheme of active galactic nuclei (AGN), Seyfert 1s and Seyfert 2s are intrinsically same, but they are viewed at different angles. However, the Fe Kαemission line luminosity of Seyfert 1s was found in average to be about twice of that of Seyfert 2s at given X-ray continuum luminosity in the previous work (Ricci et al. 2014). We construct an accretion disc-corona model, in which a fraction of energy dissipated in the disc is extracted to heat the corona above the disc. The radiation transfer equation containing Compton scattering processes is an integro-differential equation, which is solved numerically for the corona with a parallel plane geometry. We find that the specific intensity of X-ray radiation from the corona changes little with the viewing angle θwhen θis small (nearly face-on), and it is sensitive to θif the viewing angle is large (θ> 40 degrees). The radiation from the cold disc, mostly in infrared/optical/UV bands, is almost proportional to cosθwhen θ< 40 degrees, while it decreases more rapidly than cosθwhen θ> 40 degrees because of strong absorption in the corona in this case. For seyfert galaxies, the Fe Kαline may probably be emitted from the disc irradiated by the X-ray continuum emission. The observed equivalent width (EW) difference between Seyfert 1s and Seyfert 2s can be reproduced by our model calculations, provided Seyfert 1s are observed in nearly face-on direction and the average inclination angle of Seyfert 2s ~65 dgrees.

The relation of optical/UV and X-ray emission in low-luminosity active galactic nuclei

We study the relation of optical/UV and X-ray emission in the low luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs), using a sample of 49 sources including 28 local Seyfert galaxies and 21 low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs) with the optical/UV spectral luminosity at the wavelength λ=2500Å, 23.0\leq \log L_{ν(2500Å)(erg/s/Hz)\leq 27.7, and the X-ray spectral luminosity at 2 keV, 20.5\leq \log L_{ν(2 keV)}\leq 25.3. The strong correlations are found between the X-ray luminosity and the optical/UV to X-ray index, α_{ox}, with the optical/UV luminosity, with the slopes very similar to the findings for the luminous AGNs in the previous works. The correlation between α_{ox} and L_{ν(2 keV) is very weak as that found for the luminous AGNs in the majority of previous similar works. We also study the relation between $α_{\rm ox} and the Eddington ratio L_{bol}/L_{Edd} for our sample and find a significant anti-correlation for the sources with L_{bol}/L_{Edd}\lesssim 10^{-3}, which is opposite to the correlation between the two variables for the luminous AGNs. Using the advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF) model, we roughly reproduce this anti-correlationship for the two variables for the LLAGNs. This result strongly supports the ADAF as a candidate accretion mode in LLAGNs.

Thermal X-ray iron line emission from the advection dominated accretion flow in the galactic binary GX 339-4

We explore thermal X-ray iron line emission from the galactic X-ray binary GX 339-4 in the off state, using the models of the advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF) without or with outflows. The equivalent widths of hydrogen-like and helium-like thermal iron lines are calculated with different model parameters including viscosity parameter $α$, mass accretion rate at the outer radius of the ADAF $\dot{m}_{\rm out}$ and outflow strength parameter $p$. Our calculations show that the equivalent widths of thermal iron lines emitted from the pure ADAF, i.e., the ADAF without outflows, should be very small, assuming a solar metallicity for the accreting gas in the accretion flow. Strong thermal iron lines are expected to be emitted from the ADAF with relatively strong outflows. {For reasonable choice of parameters, the total equivalent width of the He-like and H-like thermal iron lines reaches to $\gtrsim 500$ eV for accreting gas with solar metallicity. The observation of strong thermal X-ray lines from GX 339-4 at the off state may give a clue to the accretion mode of the source and provide evidence for the presence of outflows/winds in the accretion flow around the black hole in GX 339-4. It is found that the values of $\dot{m}_{\rm out}$ and $p$ are degenerate, i.e., the observed X-ray continuum spectrum can be fairly well reproduced with different sets of the parameters $\dot{m}_{\rm out}$ and $p$. Such {degeneracy} can be broken when the thermal X-ray line emission data is available. We also compare our results with those in the previous similar work.}

Unification of Radio Galaxies and Their Accretion/Jet Properties

We investigate the relation between black hole mass, M_bh, and jet power, Q_jet, for a sample of BL Lacs and radio quasars. We find that BL Lacs are separated from radio quasars by the FR I/II dividing line in M_bh-Q_jet plane, which strongly supports the unification scheme of FR I/BL Lac and FR II/radio quasar. The Eddington ratio distribution of BL Lacs and radio quasars exhibits a bimodal nature with a rough division at L_bol/L_Edd~0.01, which imply that they may have different accretion modes. We calculate the jet power extracted from advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF), and find that it require dimensionless angular momentum of black hole j~0.9-0.99 to reproduce the dividing line between FR I/II or BL Lac/radio quasar if dimensionless accretion rate mdot=0.01 is adopted, which is required by above bimodal distribution of Eddington ratios. Our results suggest that black holes in radio galaxies are rapidly spinning.

Growth of massive black holes at their late stage

We derive the black hole mass density as a function of redshift with the bolometric luminosity function of AGN assuming that massive black holes grew via accreting the circumnuclear gases, in which the derived black hole mass density is required to match the measured local black hole mass density at z=0. ADAFs are supposed to present in low luminosity AGNs/normal galaxies, which are very hot and radiate mostly in the hard X-ray band. Most of the XRB is contributed by bright AGNs, and a variety of AGN population synthesis models were developed to model the observed XRB in the last two decades. Based on our derived black hole mass density, we calculate the contribution to the XRB from the ADAFs in faint AGNs/normal galaxies with a given Eddington ratio distribution, which is mostly in hard X-ray energy band with an energy peak at ~200 keV. The growth of massive black holes during ADAF phase can therefore be constrained with the observed XRB. Combining an AGN population synthesis model with our results, we find that the fitting on the observed XRB, especially at hard X-ray energy band with \ga 100 keV, is improved provided the contribution of the ADAFs in low luminosity AGNs/normal galaxies is properly included. It is found that less than ~15 per cent of local massive black hole mass density was accreted during ADAF phases. We suggest that more accurate measurements of the XRB in the energy band with \ga 100 keV in the future may help constrain the growth of massive black holes at their late stage. We also calculate their contribution to the extragalactic gamma-ray background, and find that less than ~1% of the observed EGRB is contributed by the ADAFs in these faint sources.
