Can tidal disruption event models reliably measure black hole masses?

Tidal disruption event (TDE) light curves are increasingly used to infer the masses of quiescent supermassive black holes (MBHM_{\rm{BH}}), offering a powerful probe of low-mass black hole demographics independent of host-galaxy scaling relations. However, the reliability of most semi-analytic TDE models assume full stellar disruption, despite theoretical expectations that partial disruptions dominate the TDE population. In this work we test the robustness of current TDE models using three repeating partial TDEs (rpTDEs), in which the multiple flares produced by the same surviving stellar core must yield consistent black hole masses. We present spectroscopic observations establishing AT 2023adr as a rpTDE, making it the third such spectroscopically confirmed event. We independently model the flares of the three rpTDEs; 2020vdq, 2022dbl, and 2023adr, applying fallback-accretion fits, stream-stream collision scaling relations, luminosity-based empirical relations, and cooling-envelope fits. After accounting for statistical and model-specific systematics, we find that all TDE models generally return self-consistent MBHM_{\rm{BH}} values between flares, and are broadly consistent with host-galaxy MBHM_{\rm{BH}} proxies, recovering MBHM_{\rm{BH}} to within 0.3-0.5 dex. However, the convergence of fallback models towards unphysical stellar masses and impact parameters reveals limitations in the existing fallback model grids. We also show that light curve coverage, particularly in the near-UV, is critical for constraining model parameters. This has direct implications for interpreting the thousands of TDE light curves expected from upcoming surveys such as the Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time, where from simulations, we find that MBHM_{\rm{BH}} may be underestimated on average by 0.5 dex without additional follow-up.

Quantum spin decoherence theory of magnetoresistance in mesoscopic ferromagnets and its applications

Quantum decoherence is the key mechanism determining whether quantum effects can manifest in quantum computation and transport, and mastering decoherence is central to designing and operating functional quantum devices. Here, we present a quantum spin decoherence theory of magnetoresistance (MR) from an open-quantum system perspective. Importantly, even when the spin-up and -down species have the same density of states, magnon MR, anisotropic MR, and Hanle MR still emerge in mesoscopic ferromagnets, which arise from the magnon-induced spin flip, spin relaxation anisotropy, and Hanle spin precession of itinerant electrons, respectively. The theory not only predicts the magnetic field and temperature dependencies of MR, which are related to spin relaxation time and spin-exchange field, but also obtains the universal cosine-square law of anisotropic MR. Moreover, we reveal diverse behaviors of the MR effects that enable the simple detection of the spin-exchange coupling strength via an electrical measurement. Our theory advances the understanding of the fundamental physics of MR in mesoscopic ferromagnets, revealing how it enables electrical probing of quantum decoherence-the decisive factor in nanoscience and nanotechnology.

All-sky neutrino point-source search with IceCube combined track and cascade data

Despite extensive efforts, discovery of high-energy astrophysical neutrino sources remains elusive. We present an event-level simultaneous maximum likelihood analysis of tracks and cascades using IceCube data collected from 04/06/2008 to 05/23/2022 to search the whole sky for neutrino sources and, using a source catalog, for coincidence of neutrino emission with gamma-ray emission. This is the first time a simultaneous fit of different detection channels is used to conduct a time-integrated all-sky scan with IceCube. Combining all-sky tracks, with superior pointing-power and sensitivity in the northern sky, with all-sky cascades, with good energy-resolution and sensitivity in the southern sky, we have developed the most sensitive point-source search to date by IceCube which targets the entire sky. The most significant point in the northern sky aligns with NGC 1068, a Seyfert II galaxy, which, from the catalog search, shows a 3.5σσ excess over background after accounting for trials. The most significant point in the southern sky does not align with any source in the catalog and is not significant after accounting for trials. A search for the single most significant Gaussian flare at the locations of NGC 1068, PKS 1424+240, and the southern highest significance point shows results consistent with expectations for steady emission. Notably, this is the first time that a flare shorter than four years has been excluded as being responsible for NGC 1068's emergence as a neutrino source. Our results show that combining tracks and cascades when conducting neutrino source searches improves sensitivity and can lead to new discoveries.

Delayed X-ray brightening accompanied by variable ionized absorption following a tidal disruption event

Supermassive black holes can experience super-Eddington peak mass fallback rates following the tidal disruption of a star. The theoretical expectation is that part of the infalling material is expelled by means of an accretion disk wind, whose observational signature includes blueshifted absorption lines of highly ionized species in X-ray spectra. To date, however, only one such ultra-fast outflow (UFO) has been reported in the tidal disruption event (TDE) ASASSN-14li. Here we report on the discovery of transient absorption-like signatures in X-ray spectra of the TDE AT2020ksf/Gaia20cjk (at a redshift of zz=0.092), following an X-ray brightening ∼230\sim 230 days after UV/optical peak. We find that while no statistically significant absorption features are present initially, they appear on a timescale of several days, and remain detected up to 770 days after peak. Simple thermal continuum models, combined with a power-law or neutral absorber, do not describe these features well. Adding a partial covering, low velocity ionized absorber improves the fit at early times, but fails at late times. A high velocity (vw_w ∼\sim 42000 km s−1^{-1}, or -0.15c), ionized absorber (ultra-fast outflow) provides a good fit to all data. The few day timescale of variability is consistent with expectations for a clumpy wind. We discuss several scenarios that could explain the X-ray delay, as well as the potential for larger scale wind feedback. The serendipitous nature of the discovery could suggest a high incidence of UFOs in TDEs, alleviating some of the tension with theoretical expectations.

J/ψJ/ψ photo-production in Pb-Pb peripheral collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5 TeV

The photo-production of J/ψJ/ψ mesons at low transverse momentum is studied in peripheral lead-lead collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 210 μb−1\rm{μb}^{-1}. The J/ψJ/ψ candidates are reconstructed through the prompt decay into two muons of opposite charge in the rapidity region of 2.0<y<4.52.0<y<4.5. The results significantly improve previous measurements and are compared to the latest theoretical prediction.

Analysis of neutral BB-meson decays into two muons

Branching fraction and effective lifetime measurements of the rare decay Bs0→μ+μ−B^0_s\toμ^+μ^- and searches for the decays B0→μ+μ−B^0\toμ^+μ^- and Bs0→μ+μ−γB^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ are reported using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 77 TeV, 88 TeV and 1313 TeV, corresponding to a luminosity of 99 fb−1^{-1}. The branching fraction B(Bs0→μ+μ−)=(3.09−0.43−0.11+0.46+0.15)×10−9{\mathcal{B}}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=\left(3.09^{+0.46+0.15}_{-0.43-0.11}\right)\times 10^{-9} and the effective lifetime τ(Bs0→μ+μ−)=(2.07±0.29±0.03)τ(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=(2.07\pm 0.29\pm 0.03) are measured, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. No significant signal for B0→μ+μ−B^0\toμ^+μ^- and Bs0→μ+μ−γB^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ decays is found and upper limits B(B0→μ+μ−)<2.6×10−10\mathcal{B}(B^0\toμ^+μ^-)<2.6\times 10^{-10} and B(Bs0→μ+μ−γ)<2.0×10−9\mathcal{B}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ)<2.0\times 10^{-9} at the 95% CL are determined, where the latter is limited to the range mμμ>4.9m_{μμ} > 4.9 GeV/c2/c^2. The results are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations.

Angular analysis of D0→π+π−μ+μ−D^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^- and D0→K+K−μ+μ−D^0 \to K^+K^-μ^+μ^- decays and search for CPCP violation

The first full angular analysis and an updated measurement of the decay-rate CPCP asymmetry of the D0→π+π−μ+μ−D^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^- and D0→K+K−μ+μ−D^0 \to K^+K^-μ^+μ^- decays are reported. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1}. The full set of CPCP-averaged angular observables and their CPCP asymmetries are measured as a function of the dimuon invariant mass. The results are consistent with expectations from the standard model and with CPCP symmetry.

Constraints on the CKM angle γγ from B±→Dh±B^\pm\to Dh^\pm decays using D→h±h′∓π0D\rightarrow h^\pm h^{\prime\mp}π^0 final states

A data sample collected with the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1} is used to measure eleven CPCP violation observables in B±→Dh±B^\pm\to Dh^\pm decays, where hh is either a kaon or a pion. The neutral DD meson decay is reconstructed in the three-body final states: K±π∓π0K^\pmπ^\mpπ^0}; π+π−π0π^+π^-π^0; K+K−π0K^+K^-π^0 and the suppressed π±K∓π0π^\pm K^\mpπ^0 combination. The mode where a large CPCP asymmetry is expected, B±→[π±K∓π0]DK±B^\pm\to [π^\pm K^\mpπ^0]_DK^\pm, is observed with a significance greater than seven standard deviations. The ratio of the partial width of this mode relative to that of the favoured mode, B±→[K±π∓π0]DK±B^\pm\to [K^\pmπ^\mpπ^0]_D K^\pm, is RADS(K)=(1.27±0.16±0.02)×10−2R_{{\rm ADS}(K)} = (1.27\pm0.16\pm0.02)\times 10^{-2}. Evidence for a large CPCP asymmetry is also seen: AADS(K)=−0.38±0.12±0.02A_{{\rm ADS}(K)} = -0.38\pm0.12\pm0.02. Constraints on the CKM angle γγ are calculated from the eleven reported observables.

First measurement of the Z→μ+μ−Z\rightarrow μ^+ μ^- angular coefficients in the forward region of pppp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV

The first study of the angular distribution of μ+μ−μ^+ μ^- pairs produced in the forward rapidity region via the Drell-Yan reaction pp→γ∗/Z+X→l+l−+Xpp \rightarrow γ^{*}/Z +X \rightarrow l^+ l^- + X is presented, using data collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 fb−1\rm{fb}^{-1}. The coefficients of the five leading terms in the angular distribution are determined as a function of the dimuon transverse momentum and rapidity. The results are compared to various theoretical predictions of the ZZ-boson production mechanism and can also be used to probe transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions within the proton.

Identification of charm jets at LHCb

The identification of charm jets is achieved at LHCb for data collected in 2015-2018 using a method based on the properties of displaced vertices reconstructed and matched with jets. The performance of this method is determined using a dijet calibration dataset recorded by the LHCb detector and selected such that the jets are unbiased in quantities used in the tagging algorithm. The charm-tagging efficiency is reported as a function of the transverse momentum of the jet. The measured efficiencies are compared to those obtained from simulation and found to be in good agreement.

Measurement of χc1(3872)χ_{c1}(3872) production in proton-proton collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 and 1313 TeV

The production cross-section of the χc1(3872)χ_{c1}(3872) state relative to the ψ(2S)ψ(2S) meson is measured using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of s=8\sqrt{s}=8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 2.0 and 5.4 fb−1^{-1}, respectively. The two mesons are reconstructed in the J/ψπ+π−J/ψπ^{+}π^{-} final state. The ratios of the prompt and nonprompt χc1(3872)χ_{c1}(3872) to ψ(2S)ψ(2S) production cross-sections are measured as a function of transverse momentum, pTp_{\rm T}, and rapidity, yy, in the kinematic range 4<pT<204 < p_{\rm T} < 20 GeV/cc and 2.0<y<4.52.0 < y < 4.5. The prompt ratio is found to increase with pTp_{\rm T} independently of yy. The double-differential cross-section ratio of χc1(3872)χ_{c1}(3872) relative to ψ(2S)ψ(2S) mesons between 13 and 8 TeV is also measured for the prompt component and observed to be consistent with unity, independent of pTp_{\rm T} and centre-of-mass energy.

The data sample, collected with an unbiased trigger, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 nb−1{5.4\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1}}. The differential cross-section is measured as a function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity in the ranges pT∈[0.08,10) GeV c−1{p_\mathrm{T} \in [0.08, 10)\,\mathrm{GeV}\,c^{-1}} and η∈[2.0,4.8){η\in [2.0, 4.8)} and is determined separately for positively and negatively charged particles. The results are compared with predictions from various hadronic-interaction models.

An improved measurement of the decay Bs0→μ+μ−B^0_s\toμ^+μ^- and searches for the decays B0→μ+μ−B^0\toμ^+μ^- and Bs0→μ+μ−γB^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ are performed at the LHCb experiment using data collected in proton-proton collisions at s=7, 8\sqrt{s} = 7,~8 and 1313 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1, 2 and 6 fb−1^{-1}, respectively. The Bs0→μ+μ−B^0_s\toμ^+μ^- branching fraction and effective lifetime are measured to be B(Bs0→μ+μ−)=(3.09−0.43−0.11+0.46+0.15)×10−9{\mathcal{B}}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=\left(3.09^{+0.46+0.15}_{-0.43-0.11}\right)\times 10^{-9} and τ(Bs0→μ+μ−)=(2.07±0.29±0.03)τ(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=(2.07\pm 0.29\pm 0.03) ps, respectively, where the uncertainties include both statistical and systematic contributions. No significant signal for B0→μ+μ−B^0\toμ^+μ^- and Bs0→μ+μ−γB^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ decays is found and the upper limits B(B0→μ+μ−)<2.6×10−10\mathcal{B}(B^0\toμ^+μ^-)<2.6\times 10^{-10} and B(Bs0→μ+μ−γ)<2.0×10−9\mathcal{B}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ)<2.0\times 10^{-9} at 95% confidence level are determined, where the latter is limited to the range mμμ>4.9m_{μμ} > 4.9 GeV/c2/c^2. These observables give access to the charm mixing parameters yCPππ−yCPKπy_{CP}^{ππ} - y_{CP}^{Kπ} and yCPKK−yCPKπy_{CP}^{KK} - y_{CP}^{Kπ}, and are measured as yCPππ−yCPKπ=(6.57±0.53±0.16)×10−3y_{CP}^{ππ} - y_{CP}^{Kπ} = (6.57 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.16) \times 10^{-3}, yCPKK−yCPKπ=(7.08±0.30±0.14)×10−3y_{CP}^{KK} - y_{CP}^{Kπ} = (7.08 \pm 0.30 \pm 0.14) \times 10^{-3}, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The combination of the two measurements is yCP−yCPKπ=(6.96±0.26±0.13)×10−3y_{CP} - y_{CP}^{Kπ} = (6.96 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{-3}, which is four times more precise than the previous world average.

Measurement of the lifetimes of promptly produced Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} and Ξc0Ξ^{0}_{c} baryons

A measurement of the lifetimes of the Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} and Ξc0Ξ^{0}_{c} baryons is reported using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV13\text{ TeV}, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−15.4\text{ fb}^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. The Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} and Ξc0Ξ^{0}_{c} baryons are produced directly from proton interactions and reconstructed in the pK−K−π+pK^{-}K^{-}π^{+} final state. The Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} lifetime is measured to be 276.5±13.4±4.4±0.7 fs276.5\pm13.4\pm4.4\pm0.7\text{ fs}, and the Ξc0Ξ^{0}_{c} lifetime is measured to be 148.0±2.3±2.2±0.2 fs148.0\pm2.3\pm2.2\pm0.2\text{ fs}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to the uncertainty on the D0D^{0} lifetime. These results confirm previous LHCb measurements based on semileptonic beauty-hadron decays, which disagree with earlier results of a four times shorter Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} lifetime, and provide the single most precise measurement of the Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} lifetime.

Measurement of the nuclear modification factor and prompt charged particle production in pPbp\mathrm{Pb} and pppp collisions at sNN=5 TeV\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle\mathrm{NN}}}=5\,\mathrm{TeV}

The production of prompt charged particles in proton-lead collisions and in proton-proton collisions at the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy sNN=5 TeV{\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle\mathrm{NN}}}=5\,\mathrm{TeV}} is studied at LHCb as a function of pseudorapidity (ηη) and transverse momentum (pTp_{\mathrm{T}}) with respect to the proton beam direction. The nuclear modification factor for charged particles is determined as a function of ηη between −4.8<η<−2.5{-4.8<η<-2.5} (backward region) and 2.0<η<4.8{2.0<η<4.8} (forward region), and pTp_{\mathrm{T}} between 0.2<pT<8.0 GeV/c{0.2<p_{\mathrm{T}}<8.0\,\mathrm{GeV}/c}. The results show a suppression of charged particle production in proton-lead collisions relative to proton-proton collisions in the forward region and an enhancement in the backward region for pTp_{\mathrm{T}} larger than 1.5 GeV/c1.5\,\mathrm{GeV}/c. This measurement constrains nuclear PDFs and saturation models at previously unexplored values of the parton momentum fraction down to 10−610^{-6}.

Measurement of the W boson mass

The WW boson mass is measured using proton-proton collision data at s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 fb−1^{-1} recorded during 2016 by the LHCb experiment. With a simultaneous fit of the muon q/pTq/p_T distribution of a sample of W→μνW \to μν decays and the ϕ∗ϕ^* distribution of a sample of Z→μμZ\toμμ decays the WW boson mass is determined to be \begin{equation*} m_{W} = 80354 \pm 23_{\rm stat} \pm 10_{\rm exp} \pm 17_{\rm theory} \pm 9_{\rm PDF}~\mathrm{MeV}, \end{equation*} where uncertainties correspond to contributions from statistical, experimental systematic, theoretical and parton distribution function sources. Nonlinear Aggregation-Diffusion Equations: Radial Symmetry and Long Time Asymptotics

We analyze under which conditions equilibration between two competing effects, repulsion modeled by nonlinear diffusion and attraction modeled by nonlocal interaction, occurs. This balance leads to continuous compactly supported radially decreasing equilibrium configurations for all masses. All stationary states with suitable regularity are shown to be radially symmetric by means of continuous Steiner symmetrization techniques. Calculus of variations tools allow us to show the existence of global minimizers among these equilibria. Finally, in the particular case of Newtonian interaction in two dimensions they lead to uniqueness of equilibria for any given mass up to translation and to the convergence of solutions of the associated nonlinear aggregation-diffusion equations towards this unique equilibrium profile up to translations as t→∞t\to\infty.

Observation of an exotic narrow doubly charmed tetraquark

Conventional hadronic matter consists of baryons and mesons made of three quarks and quark-antiquark pairs, respectively. The observation of a new type of hadronic state, a doubly charmed tetraquark containing two charm quarks, an anti-uu and an anti-dd quark, is reported using data collected by the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. This exotic state with a mass of about 3875 MeV/c2/c^2 manifests itself as a narrow peak in the mass spectrum of D0D0π+D^0D^0π^+ mesons just below the D∗+D0D^{*+}D^0 mass threshold. The near threshold mass together with a strikingly narrow width reveals the resonance nature of the state.

Observation of the B0→D‾∗0K+π−B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*0}K^{+}π^{-} and Bs0→D‾∗0K−π+B_s^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*0}K^{-}π^{+} decays

The first observations of B0→D‾∗(2007)0K+π−B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{+}π^{-} and Bs0→D‾∗(2007)0K−π+B_s^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{-}π^{+} decays are presented, and their branching fractions relative to that of the B0→D‾∗(2007)0π+π−B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}π^{+}π^{-} decay are reported. It is also important to understand them as a source of potential background in determinations of γγ from B+→DK+B^{+}\rightarrow DK^{+} and B0→DK+π−B^{0}\rightarrow DK^{+}π^{-} decays. The analysis is based on a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−15.4 ~\rm{fb}^{-1} of proton--proton collision data at 13 TeV13 ~\rm{TeV} centre-of-mass energy recorded with the LHCb detector. The D‾∗(2007)0\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0} mesons are fully reconstructed in the D‾0π0\overline{D}^{0}π^{0} and D‾0γ\overline{D}^{0}γ channels, with the D‾0→K+π−\overline{D}^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}π^{-} decay. A novel weighting method is used to subtract background while simultaneously applying an event-by-event efficiency correction to account for resonant structures in the decays.

Observation of the suppressed Λb0→DpK−Λ_b^0\to D p K^- decay with D→K+π−D\to K^+ π^- and measurement of its C ⁣PC\!P asymmetry

A study of Λb0Λ_b^0 baryon decays to the DpK−DpK^- final state is presented based on a proton-proton collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1} collected with the LHCb detector. Two Λb0Λ_b^0 decays are considered, Λb0→DpK−Λ_b^0\to DpK^- with D→K−π+D\to K^-π^+ and D→K+π−D\to K^+π^-, where DD represents a superposition of D0D^0 and D‾0\overline{D}^0 states. The latter process is expected to be suppressed relative to the former, and is observed for the first time. The ratio of branching fractions of the two decays is measured, and the C ⁣PC\!P asymmetry of the suppressed mode, which is sensitive to the CKM angle γγ, is also reported.

Observation of two new excited Ξb0{\itΞ}_b^0 states decaying to Λb0K−π+{\itΛ}_b^0 K^-π^+

Two narrow resonant states are observed in the Λb0K−π+{\itΛ}_b^0 K^-π^+ mass spectrum using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV~\rm TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb−16~{\rm fb}^{-1}. The minimal quark content of the Λb0K−π+{\itΛ}_b^0 K^-π^+ system indicates that these are excited Ξb0{\itΞ}_b^0 baryons. The masses of the Ξb(6327)0{\itΞ}_b(6327)^0 and Ξb(6333)0{\itΞ}_b(6333)^0 states are m(Ξb(6327)0)=6327.28 − 0.21 + 0.23±0.12±0.24 MeVm({\itΞ}_b(6327)^0) = 6327.28 ^{\,+\,0.23}_{\,-\,0.21} \pm 0.12 \pm 0.24~{\rm MeV} and m(Ξb(6333)0)=6332.69 − 0.18 + 0.17±0.03±0.22 MeVm({\itΞ}_b(6333)^0) = 6332.69 ^{\,+\,0.17}_{\,-\,0.18} \pm 0.03 \pm 0.22~{\rm MeV}, respectively, with a mass splitting of Δm=5.41 − 0.27 + 0.26±0.12 MeVΔm = 5.41 ^{\,+\,0.26}_{\,-\,0.27} \pm 0.12 ~{\rm MeV}, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the Λb0{\itΛ}_b^0 mass measurement. The measured natural widths of these states are consistent with zero, with upper limits of Γ(Ξb(6327)0)<2.20 (2.56) MeVΓ({\itΞ}_b(6327)^0)<2.20~(2.56) ~{\rm MeV} and Γ(Ξb(6333)0)<1.60 (1.92) MeVΓ({\itΞ}_b(6333)^0)<1.60~(1.92) ~{\rm MeV} at a 90% (95%)90\%~(95\%) credibility level. The significance of the two-peak hypothesis is larger than nine (five) Gaussian standard deviations compared to the no-peak (one-peak) hypothesis. Optimal charging of open spin-chain quantum batteries via homodyne-based feedback control

We study the problem of charging a dissipative one-dimensional XXXXXX spin-chain quantum battery using local magnetic fields in the presence of spin decay. The introduction of quantum feedback control based on homodyne measurement contributes to improve various performance of the quantum battery, such as energy storage, ergotropy, and effective space utilization rate. For the zero temperature environment, there is a set of optimal parameters to ensure that the spin-chain quantum battery can be fully charged and the energy stored in the battery can be fully extracted under the perfect measurement condition, which is found through the analytical calculation of a simple two-site spin-chain quantum battery and further verified by numerical simulation of a four-site spin-chain counterpart. For completeness, the adverse effects of imperfect measurement, anisotropic parameter, and finite temperature on the charging process of the quantum battery are also considered.

Precise determination of the B0s-B0sbar oscillation frequency

Mesons comprising a beauty quark and a strange quark can oscillate between particle (B0s) and antiparticle (B0s) flavour eigenstates, with a frequency given by the mass difference between heavy and light mass eigenstates, deltams. Here we present ameasurement of deltams using B0s2DsPi decays produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The oscillation frequency is found to be deltams = 17.7683 +- 0.0051 +- 0.0032 ps-1, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This measurement improves upon the current deltams precision by a factor of two. We combine this result with previous LHCb measurements to determine deltams = 17.7656 +- 0.0057 ps-1, which is the legacy measurement of the original LHCb detector.

The production cross-section is measured using Z→μ+μ−Z\rightarrowμ^+μ^- events within the fiducial region defined as pseudorapidity 2.0<η<4.52.0<η<4.5 and transverse momentum pT>20p_{T}>20 GeV/cc for both muons and dimuon invariant mass 60<Mμμ<12060<M_{μμ}<120 GeV/c2c^2. The integrated cross-section is determined to be \begin{equation*} σ(Z\rightarrowμ^+μ^-) = 196.4 \pm 0.2 \pm 1.6 \pm 3.9~pb, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the luminosity determination. Search for massive long-lived particles decaying semileptonically at sqrt(s)=13 TeV

A search is performed for massive long-lived particles (LLP) decaying semileptonically into a muon and two quarks. Two kinds of LLP production processes were considered. In the first, a Higgs-like boson with mass from 30 to 200 GeV is produced by gluon fusion and decays into two LLPs. The analysis covers LLP mass values from 10 GeV up to about one half the Higgs-like boson mass. The second LLP production mode is directly from quark interactions, with LLP masses from 10 to 90 GeV. The LLP lifetimes considered range from 5 to 200 ps. This study uses LHCb data collected from proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 1/fb. No evidence of these long-lived states has been observed, and upper limits on the production cross-section times branching ratio have been set for each model considered.

Study of the doubly charmed tetraquark Tcc+T_{cc}^+

An exotic narrow state in the D0D0π+D^0D^0π^+ mass spectrum just below the D∗+D0D^{*+}D^0 mass threshold is studied using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1} acquired with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The state is consistent with the ground isoscalar Tcc+T^+_{cc} tetraquark with a quark content of ccuˉdˉcc\bar{u}\bar{d} and spin-parity quantum numbers JP=1+\mathrm{J}^{\mathrm{P}}=1^+. Study of the DDDD mass spectra disfavours interpretation of the resonance as the isovector state. The decay structure via intermediate off-shell D∗+D^{*+} mesons is confirmed by the D0π+D^0π^+ mass distribution. The mass of the resonance and its coupling to the D∗DD^{*}D system are analysed. Resonance parameters including the pole position, scattering length, effective range and compositeness are measured to reveal important information about the nature of the Tcc+T^+_{cc} state. In addition, an unexpected dependence of the production rate on track multiplicity is observed.

Test of lepton universality in beauty-quark decays

The Standard Model of particle physics currently provides our best description of fundamental particles and their interactions. The theory predicts that the different charged leptons, the electron, muon and tau, have identical electroweak interaction strengths. Previous measurements have shown a wide range of particle decays are consistent with this principle of lepton universality. This article presents evidence for the breaking of lepton universality in beauty-quark decays, with a significance of 3.1 standard deviations, based on proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are of processes in which a beauty meson transforms into a strange meson with the emission of either an electron and a positron, or a muon and an antimuon. If confirmed by future measurements, this violation of lepton universality would imply physics beyond the Standard Model, such as a new fundamental interaction between quarks and leptons.

A WC/WO star exploding within an expanding carbon-oxygen-neon nebula

The final explosive fate of massive stars, and the nature of the compact remnants they leave behind (black holes and neutron stars), are major open questions in astrophysics. Many massive stars are stripped of their outer hydrogen envelopes as they evolve. Such Wolf-Rayet (W-R) stars emit strong and rapidly expanding (v_wind>1000 km/s) winds indicating a high escape velocity from the stellar surface. A fraction of this population is also helium depleted, with spectra dominated by highly-ionized emission lines of carbon and oxygen (Types WC/WO). Evidence indicates that the most commonly-observed supernova (SN) explosions that lack hydrogen and helium (Types Ib/Ic) cannot result from massive WC/WO stars, leading some to suggest that most such stars collapse directly into black holes without a visible supernova explosions. Here, we present observations of supernova SN 2019hgp, discovered about a day after explosion. The short rise time and rapid decline place it among an emerging population of rapidly-evolving transients (RETs). Spectroscopy reveals a rich set of emission lines indicating that the explosion occurred within a nebula composed of carbon, oxygen, and neon. Narrow absorption features show that this material is expanding at relatively high velocities (>1500 km/s) requiring a compact progenitor. Our observations are consistent with an explosion of a massive WC/WO star, and suggest that massive W-R stars may be the progenitors of some rapidly evolving transients.

The CP asymmetry is measured to be 0.025±0.015±0.006±0.0030.025 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.006 \pm 0.003, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to an external input, respectively. Measurement of differential bbˉb\bar{b}- and ccˉc\bar{c}-dijet cross-sections in the forward region of pppp collisions at s=13 TeV\sqrt{s}=13 ~ \mathrm{TeV}

The inclusive bbˉb \bar{b}- and ccˉc \bar{c}-dijet production cross-sections in the forward region of pppp collisions are measured using a data sample collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.6 fb−1^{-1}. Differential cross-sections are measured as a function of the transverse momentum and of the pseudorapidity of the leading jet, of the rapidity difference between the jets, and of the dijet invariant mass. A fiducial region for the measurement is defined by requiring that the two jets originating from the two bb or cc quarks are emitted with transverse momentum greater than 20 GeV/c/c, pseudorapidity in the range 2.2<η<4.22.2 < η< 4.2, and with a difference in the azimuthal angle between the two jets greater than 1.5. The integrated bbˉb \bar{b}-dijet cross-section is measured to be 53.0±9.753.0 \pm 9.7 nb, and the total ccˉc \bar{c}-dijet cross-section is measured to be 73±1673 \pm 16 nb. The ratio between ccˉc \bar{c}- and bbˉb \bar{b}-dijet cross-sections is also measured and found to be 1.37±0.271.37 \pm 0.27. The results are in agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-leading order.

The state, referred to as Ξb(6227)0Ξ_b(6227)^0, has a measured mass and natural width of m(Ξb(6227)0)=6227.1 −1.5 +1.4±0.5m(Ξ_b(6227)^0) = 6227.1^{\,+1.4}_{\,-1.5}\pm0.5 MeV, Γ(Ξb(6227)0)=18.6 −4.1 +5.0±1.4Γ(Ξ_b(6227)^0) = 18.6^{\,+5.0}_{\,-4.1}\pm1.4 MeV, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic. The production rate of the Ξb(6227)0Ξ_b(6227)^0 state relative to that of the Ξb−Ξ_b^- baryon in the kinematic region 2<η<52<η<5 and pT<30p_{\rm T}<30 GeV is measured to be fΞb(6227)0fΞb−B(Ξb(6227)0→Ξb−π+)=0.045±0.008±0.004\frac{f_{Ξ_b(6227)^0}}{f_{Ξ_b^-}}{\mathcal{B}}(Ξ_b(6227)^0\toΞ_b^-π^+) = 0.045\pm0.008\pm0.004, where B(Ξb(6227)0→Ξb−π+){\mathcal{B}}(Ξ_b(6227)^0\toΞ_b^-π^+) is the branching fraction of the decay, and fΞb(6227)0f_{Ξ_b(6227)^0} and fΞb−f_{Ξ_b^-} represent fragmentation fractions. Improved measurements of the mass and natural width of the previously observed Ξb(6227)−Ξ_b(6227)^- state, along with the mass of the Ξb−Ξ_b^- baryon, are also reported. Both measurements are significantly more precise than, and consistent with, previously reported values.

Observation of the Λb0→Λc+K+K−π−\varLambda^0_b \to \varLambda^+_c K^+ K^- π^- decay

The Λb0→Λc+K+K−π−\varLambda^0_b \to \varLambda^+_c K^+ K^- π^- decay is observed for the first time using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of s=7\sqrt{s}=7 and 8 TeV\rm{TeV} collected by the $\mbox{LHCb}$ detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb−13{\rm{fb}^{-1}}. The ratio of branching fractions between the Λb0→Λc+K+K−π−\varLambda^0_b \to \varLambda^+_c K^+ K^- π^- and the Λb0→Λc+Ds−\varLambda^{0}_{b}\to\varLambda^{+}_{c}D^{-}_{s} decays is measured to be \begin{equation*} \frac{\mathcal{B} ( \varLambda^0_b \to \varLambda^+_c K^+ K^- π^-) } {\mathcal{B} ( \varLambda^0_b \to \varLambda^+_c D^-_s)} = (9.26 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.46 \pm 0.26)\times10^{-2}, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the knowledge of the Ds−→K+K−π−D^-_s \to K^+ K^- π^- branching fraction. No structure on the invariant mass distribution of the Λc+K+\varLambda^+_c K^+ system is found, consistent with no open-charm pentaquark signature.

Search for the doubly charmed baryon Ξcc+\itΞ_{cc}^{+} in the Ξc+π−π+\itΞ_{c}^{+} π^{-} π^{+} final state

A search for the doubly charmed baryon Ξcc+\itΞ_{cc}^{+} is performed in the Ξc+π−π+\itΞ_{c}^{+} π^{-} π^{+} invariant-mass spectrum, where the Ξc+\itΞ_{c}^{+} baryon is reconstructed in the pK−π+p K^{-} π^{+} final state. The study uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}. No significant signal is observed in the invariant-mass range of 3.4−-3.8 GeV/c2\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c^2. Upper limits are set on the ratio of branching fractions multiplied by the production cross-section with respect to the Ξcc++→(Ξc+→pK−π+)π+\itΞ_{cc}^{++} \rightarrow (\itΞ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p K^{-} π^{+}) π^{+} decay for different Ξcc+\itΞ_{cc}^{+} mass and lifetime hypotheses in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and the transverse momentum range from 2.5 to 25 GeV/c\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c. The results from this search are combined with a previously published search for the Ξcc+→Λc+K−π+\itΞ_{cc}^{+} \rightarrow \itΛ_{c}^{+} K^{-} π^{+} decay mode, yielding a maximum local significance of 4.0 standard deviations around the mass of 3620 MeV/c2\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V}/c^2, including systematic uncertainties. Taking into account the look-elsewhere effect in the 3.5−-3.7 GeV/c2\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c^2 mass window, the combined global significance is 2.9 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties.

SRG/ART-XC discovery of SRGA J204318.2+443815: towards the complete population of faint X-ray pulsars

We report a discovery of a new long-period X-ray pulsar SRGA J204318.2+443815/SRGe J204319.0+443820 in the Be binary system. The source was found in the second all-sky survey by the Mikhail Pavlinsky telescope on board the SRG mission. The follow-up observations with XMM-Newton, NICER and NuSTAR observatories allowed us to discover a strong coherent signal in the source light curve with the period of ∼742\sim742 s. The pulsed fraction was found to depend on the energy increasing from ∼20\sim20% in soft X-rays to >50>50% at high energies, as it is typical for X-ray pulsars. The source demonstrate a quite hard spectrum with an exponential cutoff at high energies and bolometric luminosity of LX≃4×1035L_X \simeq 4\times10^{35} erg/s. Dedicated optical and infrared observations with the RTT-150, NOT, Keck and Palomar telescopes revealed a number of emission lines (Hα_α, HeI, Pashen and Braket series) with the strongly absorbed continuum. All of above suggests that SRGAJ204318.2+443815/ SRGeJ204319.0+443820 is a new persistent low luminosity X-ray pulsar in a distant binary system with a Be-star of the B0-B2e class. Thus the SRG observatory allow us to unveil the hidden population of faint persistent objects including the population of slowly rotating X-ray pulsars in Be systems.

Study of Bs0→J/ψπ+π−K+K−B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^-K^+K^- decays

The decays Bs0→J/ψπ+π−K+K−B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^- K^+ K^- are studied using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb−1^{-1}, collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13TeV. The decays Bs0→J/ψK∗0Kˉ∗0B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψK^{\ast0} \bar{K}^{\ast0} and Bs0→χc1(3872)K+K−B^0_s \rightarrow χ_{c1}(3872)K^+K^-, where the K+K−K^+K^- pair does not originate from a ϕϕ meson, are observed for the first time. Precise measurements of the ratios of branching fractions between intermediate χc1(3872)ϕχ_{c1}(3872)ϕ, J/ψK∗0Kˉ∗0J/ψK^{\ast0}\bar{K}^{\ast0}, ψ(2S)ϕψ(2S)ϕ and χc1(3872)K+K−χ_{c1}(3872)K^+K^- states are reported. A structure, denoted as X(4740)X(4740), is observed in the J/ψϕJ/ψϕ mass spectrum and, assuming a Breit-Wigner parameterisation, its mass and width are determined to be \begin{eqnarray*} m_{X(4740)} & = & 4741 \pm 6 \pm 6\,{\mathrm{MeV}}/c^2 \,, \\ Γ_{X(4740)} & = & 53 \pm 15 \pm 11\,{\mathrm{MeV}} \,, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. In addition, the most precise single measurement of the mass of the Bs0B^0_s meson is performed and gives a value of mBs0=5366.98±0.07±0.13 MeV/c2 . m_{B^0_s} = 5366.98 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.13\,{\mathrm{MeV}}/c^2\,.

Study of the Bc+B_c^+ decays into charmonia and three light hadrons

Using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb−19fb^{-1} collected with the LHCb detector, seven decay modes of the Bc+B_c^+ meson into a J/ψJ/ψ or ψ(2S)ψ(2S) meson and three charged hadrons, kaons or pions, are studied. The decays Bc+→(ψ(2S)→J/ψπ+π−)π+B_c^+\rightarrow ( ψ(2S) \rightarrow J/ψπ^+ π^-)π^+ , Bc+→ψ(2S)π+π+π−B_c^+\rightarrow ψ(2S)π^+π^+π^-, Bc+→J/ψK+π+π−B_c^+\rightarrow J/ψK^+π^+π^- and Bc+→K+K+K−B_c^+\rightarrow K^+K^+K^- are observed for the first time, and evidence for the Bc+→ψ(2S)K+K−π+B_c^+\rightarrow ψ(2S)K^+K^-π^+ decay is found, where J/ψJ/ψ and ψ(2S)ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed in their dimuon decay modes. The ratios of branching fractions between the different Bc+B_c^+ decays are reported as well as the fractions of the decays proceeding via intermediate resonances. The results largely support the factorisation approach used for a theoretical description of the studied decays.

Amplitude analysis of the B+→π+π+π−B^+ \rightarrow π^+π^+π^- decay

The results of an amplitude analysis of the charmless three-body decay B+→π+π+π−B^+ \rightarrow π^+π^+π^-, in which C ⁣PC\!P-violation effects are taken into account, are reported. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb−13 \text{fb}^{-1} of pppp collisions recorded with the LHCb detector. The most challenging aspect of the analysis is the description of the behaviour of the π+π−π^+ π^- S-wave contribution, which is achieved by using three complementary approaches based on the isobar model, the K-matrix formalism, and a quasi-model-independent procedure. Additional resonant contributions for all three methods are described using a common isobar model, and include the ρ(770)0ρ(770)^0, ω(782)ω(782) and ρ(1450)0ρ(1450)^0 resonances in the π+π−π^+π^- P-wave, the f2(1270)f_2(1270) resonance in the π+π−π^+π^- D-wave, and the ρ3(1690)0ρ_3(1690)^0 resonance in the π+π−π^+π^- F-wave. Significant C ⁣PC\!P-violation effects are observed in both S- and D-waves, as well as in the interference between the S- and P-waves. The results from all three approaches agree and provide new insight into the dynamics and the origin of C ⁣PC\!P-violation effects in B+→π+π+π−B^+ \rightarrow π^+π^+π^- decays.

Coherent Band-Edge Oscillations and Dynamic LO Phonon Mode Splitting as Evidence for Polaronic Coupling in Perovskites

The coherence of collective modes, such as phonons, and their modulation of the electronic states are long sought in complex systems, which is a cross-cutting issue in photovoltaics and quantum electronics. In photovoltaic cells and lasers based on metal halide perovskites, the presence of polaronic coupling, i.e., photocarriers dressed by the macroscopic motion of charged lattice, assisted by terahertz (THz) longitudinal optical (LO) phonons, has been intensely studied yet still debated. This may be key for explaining the remarkable properties of the perovskite materials, e.g., defect tolerance, long charge lifetimes and diffusion length. Here we use the intense single-cycle THz pulse with the peak electric field up to ETHz=E_{THz}=1000\,kV/cm to drive coherent band-edge oscillations at room temperature in CH3_3NH3_3PbI3_3. We reveal the oscillatory behavior dominantly to a specific quantized lattice vibration mode at ωLO∼ω_{\mathrm{LO}}\sim4 THz, being both dipole and momentum forbidden. THz-driven coherent dynamics exhibits distinguishing features: the room temperature coherent oscillations at ωLOω_{\mathrm{LO}} longer than 1 ps in both single crystals and thin films; the {\em mode-selective} modulation of different band edge states assisted by electron-phonon (ee-phph) interaction; {\em dynamic mode splitting} controlled by temperature due to entropy and anharmonicity of organic cations. Our results demonstrate intense THz-driven coherent band-edge modulation as a powerful probe of electron-lattice coupling phenomena and provide compelling implications for polaron correlations in perovskites.

Determination of quantum numbers for several excited charmed mesons observed in B−→D∗+π−π−B^- \to D^{*+} π^- π^- decays

A four-body amplitude analysis of the B−→D∗+π−π−B^- \to D^{*+} π^- π^- decay is performed, where fractions and relative phases of the various resonances contributing to the decay are measured. Several quasi-model-independent analyses are performed aimed at searching for the presence of new states and establishing the quantum numbers of previously observed charmed meson resonances. In particular the resonance parameters and quantum numbers are determined for the D1(2420)D_1(2420), D1(2430)D_1(2430), D0(2550)D_0(2550), D1∗(2600)D^*_1(2600), D2(2740)D_2(2740) and D3∗(2750)D^*_3(2750) states. The mixing between the D1(2420)D_1(2420) and D1(2430)D_1(2430) resonances is studied and the mixing parameters are measured. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb−1fb^{-1}, collected in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV with the LHCb detector.

Discovery of Light-induced Metastable Martensitic Anomaly Controlled by Single-Cycle Terahertz Pulses

We report on an ultrafast photoinduced phase transition with a strikingly long-lived Martensitic anomaly driven by above-threshold single-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses in Nb3_3Sn. A non-thermal, THz-induced depletion of low frequency conductivity indicates increased gap splitting of high energy Γ12Γ_{12} bands by removal of their degeneracies which enhances the Martensitic phase. In contrast, optical pumping leads to a Γ12Γ_{12} gap melting. Such light-induced non-equilibrium Martensitic instability persists up to a critical temperature ∼\sim100 K, i.e., more than twice the equilibrium temperature, and can be stabilized beyond technologically-relevant, nanosecond timescales. Together with first-principle simulations, we identify a compelling THz tuning of structural fluctuations via Eu_u phonons to achieve a non-equilibrium ordering at high temperatures far exceeding those for equilibrium states.

First observation of excited Ωb−Ω_b^- states

We report four narrow peaks in the Ξb0K−Ξ_b^0K^- mass spectrum obtained using pppp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1} recorded by the LHCb experiment. Referring to these states by their mass, the mass values are \begin{align*} m(Ω_b(6316)^-) &= 6315.64\pm0.31\pm0.07\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \\ m(Ω_b(6330)^-) &= 6330.30\pm0.28\pm0.07\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \\ m(Ω_b(6340)^-) &= 6339.71\pm0.26\pm0.05\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \\ m(Ω_b(6350)^-) &= 6349.88\pm0.35\pm0.05\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \end{align*}where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and the last is due to the knowledge of the Ξb0Ξ_b^0 mass. The natural widths of the three lower mass states are consistent with zero, and the 90% confidence-level upper limits are determined to be Γ(Ωb(6316)−)<2.8{Γ(Ω_b(6316)^-)<2.8} MeV, Γ(Ωb(6330)−)<3.1{Γ(Ω_b(6330)^-)<3.1} MeV and Γ(Ωb(6340)−)<1.5{Γ(Ω_b(6340)^-)<1.5} MeV. The natural width of the Ωb(6350)−Ω_b(6350)^- peak is 1.4−0.8+1.0±0.11.4^{+1.0}_{-0.8}\pm0.1 MeV, which is 2.5σσ from zero and corresponds to an upper limit of 2.8 MeV. The peaks have local significances ranging from 3.6σσ to 7.2σσ. After accounting for the look-elsewhere effect, the significances of the Ωb(6316)−Ω_b(6316)^- and Ωb(6330)−Ω_b(6330)^- peaks are reduced to 2.1σσ and 2.6σσ respectively, while the two higher mass peaks exceed 5σσ. The observed peaks are consistent with expectations for excited Ωb−Ω_b^- resonances.

Measurement of C ⁣PC\!P-averaged observables in the B0→K∗0μ+μ−B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}μ^{+}μ^{-} decay

Using a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.05.0fb−1^{-1} collected by the $\mbox{LHCb}$ experiment at centre-of-mass energies s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV in 2011, 8 TeV in 2012 and 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016, a signal yield of around 9000 Bs0→ϕϕB_s^0\rightarrowϕϕ decays is obtained. The CP-violating phase ϕsssˉsϕ_s^{s\bar{s}s} is measured to be −0.073±0.115-0.073 \pm 0.115(stat)±0.027\pm 0.027(syst) rad, under the assumption it is independent on the helicity of the ϕϕϕϕ decay. In addition, the CP-violating phases of the transverse polarisations under the assumption of CP conservation of the longitudinal phase are measured. The helicity-independent direct CP-violation parameter is also measured, and is found to be ∣λ∣=0.99±0.05|λ|=0.99 \pm 0.05 (stat)±0.01 \pm 0.01 (syst). In addition, TT-odd triple-product asymmetries are measured. The results obtained are consistent with the hypothesis of CP conservation in b→sˉssˉb\rightarrow\bar{s}s\bar{s} transitions. Finally, a limit on the branching fraction of the B0→ϕϕB^0\rightarrow ϕϕ decay is determined to be B(B0→ϕϕ)<2.7×10−8\mathcal{B}(B^0\rightarrow ϕϕ)<2.7\times 10^{-8} at 90% confidence level.

Measurement of psi(2S) production cross-sections in proton-proton collisions at 7 and 13 TeV

The cross-sections of ψ(2S)ψ(2S) meson production in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV\sqrt{s}=13~\mathrm{TeV} are measured with a data sample collected by the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 275 pb−1275~p\mathrm{b}^{-1}. The production cross-sections for prompt ψ(2S)ψ(2S) mesons and those for ψ(2S)ψ(2S) mesons from bb-hadron decays (ψ(2S)−from−bψ{(2S)}\mathrm{-from-}b) are determined as functions of the transverse momentum, pTp_{\mathrm{T}}, and the rapidity, yy, of the ψ(2S)ψ(2S) meson in the kinematic range 2<pT<20 GeV/c2<p_{\mathrm{T}}<20~\mathrm{GeV}/c and 2.0<y<4.52.0<y<4.5. The production cross-sections integrated over this kinematic region are \begin{equation*} \begin{split} σ(\mbox{prompt }ψ(2S),13~\mathrm{TeV}) &= {1.430 \pm 0.005(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.099 (\mathrm{syst})μ\mathrm{b}},\\ σ(ψ(2S)\mathrm{-from-}b,13~\mathrm{TeV})&={0.426 \pm 0.002(\mathrm{stat}) \pm0.030 (\mathrm{syst})μ\mathrm{b}}. \end{split} \end{equation*} A new measurement of ψ(2S)ψ(2S) production cross-sections in pppp collisions at s=7 TeV\sqrt{s}=7~\mathrm{TeV} is also performed using data collected in 2011, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 614 pb−1614~{p\mathrm{b}^{-1}}.The integrated production cross-sections in the kinematic range 3.5<pT<14 GeV/c3.5<p_{\mathrm{T}}<14~\mathrm{GeV}/c and 2.0<y<4.52.0<y<4.5 are \begin{equation*} \begin{split} σ(\mbox{prompt }ψ(2S),7~\mathrm{TeV}) &={0.471 \pm0.001 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.025 (\mathrm{syst})μ\mathrm{b}},\\ σ(ψ(2S)\mathrm{-from-}b,7~\mathrm{TeV}) &={0.126\pm0.001 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm0.008 (\mathrm{syst})μ\mathrm{b}}. \end{split} \end{equation*} All results show reasonable agreement with theoretical calculations.

Measurement of the ηc(1S)η_c(1S) production cross-section in pppp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb−12.0\,fb^{-1}, collected by the LHCb experiment, the production of the ηc(1S)η_c(1S) state in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV\sqrt{s}=13 \text{ TeV} is studied in the rapidity range 2.0<y<4.5{2.0 < y < 4.5} and in the transverse momentum range 6.5<pT<14.0 GeV{6.5 < p_{T} < 14.0\text{ GeV}}. The cross-section for prompt production of ηc(1S)η_c(1S) mesons relative to that of the J/ψJ/ψ meson is measured using the ppˉ{p\bar{p}} decay mode and is found to be σηc(1S)/σJ/ψ=1.69±0.15±0.10±0.18{σ_{η_c(1S)}/σ_{J/ψ} = 1.69 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.18}. The quoted uncertainties are, in order, statistical, systematic and due to uncertainties on the branching fractions of the J/ψ→ppˉ{J/ψ\to p \bar{p}} and ηc→ppˉ{η_c\to p \bar{p}} decays. The prompt ηc(1S)η_c(1S) production cross-section is determined to be σηc(1S)=1.26±0.11±0.08±0.14 μb{σ_{η_c(1S)} = 1.26 \pm 0.11\pm 0.08 \pm 0.14 \,μb}, where the last uncertainty includes that on the J/ψ{J/ψ} meson cross-section. The ratio of the branching fractions of bb-hadron decays to the ηc(1S)η_c(1S) and J/ψ{J/ψ} states is measured to be Bb→ηcX/Bb→J/ψX=0.48±0.03±0.03±0.05{\mathcal{B}_{b\toη_c X}/\mathcal{B}_{b\to J/ψX} = 0.48 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.05}, where the last uncertainty is due to those on the branching fractions of the J/ψ→ppˉ{J/ψ\to p \bar{p}} and ηc→ppˉ{η_c\to p \bar{p}} decays. The difference between the J/ψ{J/ψ} and ηc(1S)η_c(1S) masses is also determined to be 113.0±0.7±0.1 MeV{113.0 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.1\text{ MeV}}, which is the most precise single measurement of this quantity to date.

Measurement of the Λb0→J/ψΛΛ^0_b\rightarrow J/ψΛ angular distribution and the Λb0Λ^0_b polarisation in pppp collisions

This paper presents an analysis of the Λb0→J/ψΛΛ^0_b\rightarrow J/ψΛ angular distribution and the transverse production polarisation of Λb0Λ^0_b baryons in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The measurements are performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb−1^{-1}, collected with the LHCb experiment. The polarisation is determined in a fiducial region of Λb0Λ^0_b transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of 1<pT<201 < p_{T} < 20 GeV/c/c and 2<η<52 < η< 5, respectively. The data are consistent with Λb0Λ^0_b baryons being produced unpolarised in this region. The parity-violating asymmetry parameter of the Λ→pπ−Λ\rightarrow pπ^- decay is also determined from the data and its value is found to be consistent with a recent measurement by the BES\,III collaboration.

Measurement of the branching fraction of the decay Bs0→KS0KS0B_s^0\to K_S^0 K_S^0

A measurement of the branching fraction of the decay Bs0→KS0KS0B_s^0 \to K_S^0 K_S^0 is performed using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb−1fb^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment between 2011 and 2016. The branching fraction is determined to be BR(Bs0→KS0KS0B_s^0 \to K_S^0 K_S^0) = [8.3 ±\pm 1.6 (stat) ±\pm 0.9 (syst) ±\pm 0.8 (norm) ±\pm 0.3 (fs/fdf_s/f_d)] ×10−6\times 10^{-6} , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third and fourth are due to uncertainties on the branching fraction of the normalization mode B0→ϕKS0B^0 \to ϕK_S^0 and the ratio of hadronization fractions fs/fdf_s/f_d. This is the most precise measurement of this branching fraction to date. Furthermore, a measurement of the branching fraction of the decay B0→KS0KS0B^0 \to K_S^0 K_S^0 is performed relative to that of the Bs0→KS0KS0B_s^0 \to K_S^0 K_S^0 channel, and is found to be BR(B0→KS0KS0)BR(Bs0→KS0KS0)\frac{BR(B^0 \to K_S^0 K_S^0)}{BR(B_s^0 \to K_S^0 K_S^0)} = [7.5 ±\pm 3.1 (stat) ±\pm 0.5 (syst) ±\pm 0.3 (fs/fdf_s/f_d)] ×10−2\times 10^{-2}.

Measurement of the relative branching fractions of B+→h+h′+h′−B^+ \to h^+h^{\prime +}h^{\prime -} decays

The relative branching fractions of B+→h+h′+h′−B^+ \to h^+h^{\prime +}h^{\prime -} decays, where h(′)h^{(\prime)} is a pion or kaon, are measured. The analysis is performed with a data sample, collected with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0fb−13.0 {\rm fb}^{-1} of pppp collisions. The results obtained improve significantly on previous measurements of these quantities, and are important for the interpretation of Dalitz plot analyses of three-body charmless hadronic decays of B+B^+ mesons.

Observation of a new baryon state in the Λb0π+π−Λ_b^0π^+π^- mass spectrum

A new baryon state is observed in the Λb0π+π−Λ_b^0π^+π^- mass spectrum with high significance using a data sample of pppp collisions, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies s=7,8\sqrt{s}=7, 8 and 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb−1^{-1}. The mass and natural width of the new state are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} m & = & 6072.3 \pm 2.9 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.2 MeV\,, Γ& = & 72 \pm 11 \pm 2 MeV\,, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The third uncertainty for the mass is due to imprecise knowledge of the Λb0Λ_b^0 baryon mass. The new state is consistent with the first radial excitation of the Λb0Λ_b^0 baryon, the Λb(2S)0Λ_b(2S)^0 resonance. Updated measurements of the masses and the upper limits on the natural widths of the previously observed Λb(5912)0Λ_b(5912)^0 and Λb(5920)0Λ_b(5920)^0 states are also reported.

The Λc+K−Λ_c^+K^- mass spectrum is studied with a data sample of pppp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb−1^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. Three Ξc0Ξ_c^0 states are observed with a large significance and their masses and natural widths are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} m(Ξ_c(2923)^0)&=& 2923.04 \pm 0.25 \pm 0.20 \pm 0.14 ~\mathrm{MeV}, Γ(Ξ_c(2923)^0) &=& 7.1 \pm 0.8 \pm 1.8 ~\mathrm{MeV}, \end{eqnarray*} \begin{eqnarray*} m(Ξ_c(2939)^0) &=& 2938.55 \pm 0.21 \pm 0.17 \pm 0.14 ~\mathrm{ MeV}, Γ(Ξ_c(2939)^0) &=& 10.2 \pm 0.8 \pm 1.1 ~\mathrm{ MeV}, \end{eqnarray*} \begin{eqnarray*} m(Ξ_c(2965)^0) &=& 2964.88 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.14~\mathrm{ MeV}, Γ(Ξ_c(2965)^0) &=& 14.1 \pm 0.9 \pm 1.3~\mathrm{ MeV}, \end{eqnarray*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the limited knowledge of the Λc+Λ_c^+ mass. The Ξc(2923)0Ξ_c(2923)^0 and Ξc(2939)0Ξ_c(2939)^0 baryons are new states. The Ξc(2965)0Ξ_c(2965)^0 state is in the vicinity of the known Ξc(2970)0Ξ_c(2970)^0 baryon; however, their masses and natural widths differ significantly.

Observation of new resonances in the Λb0π+π−Λ_{b}^0π^+π^- system

We report the observation of a new structure in the Λb0π+π−Λ_b^0 π^+π^- spectrum using the full LHCb data set of pppp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−19\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}, collected at s=7\sqrt{s}=7, 8 and 13 TeV13\,\mathrm{TeV}. A study of the structure suggests its interpretation as a superposition of two almost degenerate narrow states. The masses and widths of these states are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} m_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6146)}^0} &=&6146.17 \pm 0.33 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.16\,\mathrm{MeV} \,, m_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6152)}^0} &=&6152.51 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.16\,\mathrm{MeV} \,, Γ_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6146)}^0}&=&\phantom{615}2.9\phantom{0}\pm 1.3\phantom{0} \pm 0.3\phantom{0}\,\mathrm{MeV}\,, Γ_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6152)}^0} &=&\phantom{615}2.1\phantom{0}\pm 0.8\phantom{0} \pm 0.3\phantom{0}\,\mathrm{MeV}\,, \end{eqnarray*} with a mass splitting of Δm=6.34±0.32±0.02 MeVΔm = 6.34 \pm 0.32 \pm 0.02\,\mathrm{MeV}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third derives from the knowledge of the mass of the Λb0Λ_b^0 baryon. The measured masses and widths of these new excited states suggest their possible interpretation as a doublet of Λb(1D)0Λ_{b}\mathrm{(1D)}^0 states.

Observation of several sources of CPCP violation in B+→π+π+π−B^+ \to π^+ π^+ π^- decays

Observations are reported of different sources of CPCP violation from an amplitude analysis of B+→π+π+π−B^+ \to π^+ π^+ π^- decays, based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3  fb−13 \; {\rm fb}^{-1} of pppp collisions recorded with the LHCb detector. A large CPCP asymmetry is observed in the decay amplitude involving the tensor f2(1270)f_2(1270) resonance, and in addition significant CPCP violation is found in the π+π−π^+ π^- S-wave at low invariant mass. The presence of CPCP violation related to interference between the π+π−π^+ π^- S-wave and the P-wave B+→ρ(770)0π+B^+ \to ρ(770)^0 π^+ amplitude is also established; this causes large local asymmetries but cancels when integrated over the phase space of the decay. The results provide both qualitative and quantitative new insights into CPCP-violation effects in hadronic BB decays.

These searches look for A′ ⁣→ ⁣μ+μ−A'\!\to\!μ^+μ^- decays using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5/fb collected with the LHCb detector. Neither search finds evidence for a signal, and 90% confidence-level exclusion limits are placed on the γγ-A′A' kinetic-mixing strength. The prompt-like A′A' search explores the mass region from near the dimuon threshold up to 70 GeV, and places the most stringent constraints to date on dark photons with 214<m(A′)≲740214 < m(A') \lesssim 740 MeV and 10.6<m(A′)≲3010.6 < m(A') \lesssim 30 GeV. Ultrafast Control of Excitonic Rashba Fine Structure by Phonon Coherences in a Metal Halide Perovskite CH3_3NH3_3PbI3_3

We discover hidden Rashba fine structure in CH3_3NH3_3PbI3_3 and demonstrate its quantum control by vibrational coherence through symmetry-selective vibronic (electron-phonon) coupling. Above a critical threshold of a single-cycle terahertz pump field, a Raman phonon mode distinctly modulates the middle excitonic states with {\em persistent} coherence for more than ten times longer than the ones on two sides that predominately couple to infrared phonons. These vibronic quantum beats, together with first-principles modeling of phonon periodically modulated Rashba parameters, identify a {\em three-fold} excitonic fine structure splitting, i.e., optically-forbidden, degenerate dark states in between two bright ones. Harnessing of vibronic quantum coherence and symmetry inspires light-perovskite quantum control and sub-THz-cycle "Rashba engineering" of spin-split bands for ultimate multi-function device.

A search for decay-time-dependent charge-parity (CPCP) asymmetry in D0→K+K−D^0 \to K^+K^- and D0→π+π−D^0 \to π^+π^- decays is performed at the LHCb experiment using proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4fb−1^{-1}. The D0D^0 mesons are required to originate from semileptonic decays of bb hadrons, such that the charge of the muon identifies the flavor of the neutral DD meson at production. The asymmetries in the effective decay widths of D0D^0 and D‾0\overline{D}^0 mesons are determined to be AΓ(K+K−)=(−4.3±3.6±0.5)×10−4A_Γ(K^+K^-) = ( -4.3 \pm 3.6 \pm 0.5 )\times 10^{-4} and AΓ(π+π−)=(2.2±7.0±0.8)×10−4A_Γ(π^+π^-) = ( 2.2 \pm 7.0 \pm 0.8)\times 10^{-4}, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The results are consistent with CPCP symmetry and, when combined with previous LHCb results, yield AΓ(K+K−)=(−4.4±2.3±0.6)×10−4A_Γ(K^+K^-) = ( -4.4 \pm 2.3 \pm 0.6 )\times 10^{-4} and AΓ(π+π−)=(2.5±4.3±0.7)×10−4A_Γ(π^+π^-) = ( 2.5 \pm 4.3 \pm 0.7)\times 10^{-4}.

Updated measurement of time-dependent CPCP-violating observables in Bs0→J/ψK+K−B^{0}_{s}\to J/ψK^+ K^- decays

The decay-time-dependent CPCP asymmetry in Bs0→J/ψK+K−B^{0}_{s}\to J/ψK^{+} K^{-} decays is measured using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.9 fb−11.9\,\mathrm{fb^{-1}}, collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV13\,\mathrm{TeV} in 2015 and 2016. Using a sample of approximately 117\,000 signal decays with an invariant K+K−K^{+} K^{-} mass in the vicinity of the ϕ(1020)ϕ(1020) resonance, the CPCP-violating phase ϕsϕ_s is measured, along with the difference in decay widths of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the Bs0B^{0}_{s}-Bˉs0\bar{B}^{0}_{s} system, ΔΓsΔΓ_s. The difference of the average Bs0B^{0}_{s} and B0B^{0} meson decay widths, Γs−ΓdΓ_s-Γ_d, is determined using in addition a sample of B0→J/ψK+π−B^{0} \to J/ψK^{+} π^{-} decays. The values obtained are ϕs=−0.083±0.041±0.006 radϕ_s = -0.083\pm0.041\pm0.006\,\mathrm{rad}, ΔΓs=0.077±0.008±0.003 ps−1ΔΓ_s = 0.077 \pm 0.008 \pm 0.003\, \mathrm{ps^{-1}} and Γs−Γd=−0.0041±0.0024±0.0015 ps−1Γ_s-Γ_d = -0.0041 \pm 0.0024 \pm 0.0015\,\mathrm{ps^{-1}}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements of these quantities to date and are consistent with expectations based on the Standard Model and with a previous LHCb analysis of this decay using data recorded at centre-of-mass energies 7 and 8 TeV. Finally, the results are combined with recent results from Bs0→J/ψπ+π−B^{0}_{s}\to J/ψπ^{+} π^{-} decays obtained using the same dataset as this analysis, and with previous independent LHCb results.

Light-Driven Raman Coherence as a Non-Thermal Route to Ultrafast Topology Switching

A grand challenge underlies the entire field of topology-enabled quantum logic and information science: how to establish topological control principles driven by quantum coherence and understand the time-dependence of such periodic driving? Here we demonstrate a THz pulse-induced phase transition in Dirac materials that is periodically driven by vibrational coherence due to excitation of the lowest Raman-active mode. Above a critical field threshold, there emerges a long-lived metastable phase with unique Raman coherent phonon-assisted switching dynamics, absent for optical pumping. The switching also manifest itself by non-thermal spectral shape, relaxation slowing down near the Lifshitz transition where the critical Dirac point (DP) occurs, and diminishing signals at the same temperature that the Berry curvature induced Anomalous Hall Effect varnishes. These results, together with first-principles modeling, identify a mode-selective Raman coupling that drives the system from strong to weak topological insulators, STI to WTI, with a Dirac semimetal phase established at a critical atomic displacement controlled by the phonon pumping. Harnessing of vibrational coherence can be extended to steer symmetry-breaking transitions, i.e., Dirac to Weyl ones, with implications on THz topological quantum gate and error correction applications.

Thermal Resistances of Thin-Films of Small Molecule Organic Semiconductors

We have measured the thermal resistances of thin films of the small molecule organic semiconductors bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-pn), bis(triethylsilylethynyl) anthradithiophene (TES-ADT) and difluoro bis(triethylsilylethynyl) anthradithiophene (diF-TES-ADT). For each material, several films of different thicknesses have been measured to separate the effects of intrinsic thermal conductivity from interface thermal resistance. For non-crystalline films of all three materials, with thicknesses ranging from < 100 nm to > 4 microns, the thermal conductivities are similar to that of polymers and over an order of magnitude smaller than that of the crystals, reflecting the large reduction in phonon mean-free path in the films. Thin (< 205 nm) crystalline films of TES-ADT, prepared by vapor-annealing spin-cast films, have also been measured, but for these the thermal resistances are dominated by interface scattering.

Frequency-Dependent Photothermal Measurement of Transverse Thermal Diffusivity of Organic Semiconductors

We have used a photothermal technique, in which chopped light heats the front surface of a small ( ~ 1 mm2) sample and the chopping frequency dependence of thermal radiation from the back surface is measured with a liquid nitrogen cooled infrared detector. In our system, the sample is placed directly in front of the detector within its dewar. Because the detector is also sensitive to some of the incident light which leaks around or through the sample, measurements are made for the detector signal that is in quadrature with the chopped light. Results are presented for layered crystals of semiconducting 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-pn) and for papers of cellulose nanofibrils coated with semiconducting poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene):poly(styrene-sulfonate) (NFC-PEDOT). For NFC-PEDOT, we have found that the transverse diffusivity, smaller than the in-plane value, varies inversely with thickness, suggesting that texturing of the papers varies with thickness. For TIPS-pn, we have found that the interlayer diffusivity is an order of magnitude larger than the in-plane value, consistent with previous estimates, suggesting that low-frequency optical phonons, presumably associated with librations in the TIPS side-groups, carry most of the heat.

JUNO Conceptual Design Report

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is proposed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy using an underground liquid scintillator detector. It is located 53 km away from both Yangjiang and Taishan Nuclear Power Plants in Guangdong, China. The experimental hall, spanning more than 50 meters, is under a granite mountain of over 700 m overburden. Within six years of running, the detection of reactor antineutrinos can resolve the neutrino mass hierarchy at a confidence level of 3-4σσ, and determine neutrino oscillation parameters sin⁡2θ12\sin^2θ_{12}, Δm212Δm^2_{21}, and ∣Δmee2∣|Δm^2_{ee}| to an accuracy of better than 1%. The JUNO detector can be also used to study terrestrial and extra-terrestrial neutrinos and new physics beyond the Standard Model. The central detector contains 20,000 tons liquid scintillator with an acrylic sphere of 35 m in diameter. ∼\sim17,000 508-mm diameter PMTs with high quantum efficiency provide ∼\sim75% optical coverage. The current choice of the liquid scintillator is: linear alkyl benzene (LAB) as the solvent, plus PPO as the scintillation fluor and a wavelength-shifter (Bis-MSB). The number of detected photoelectrons per MeV is larger than 1,100 and the energy resolution is expected to be 3% at 1 MeV. The calibration system is designed to deploy multiple sources to cover the entire energy range of reactor antineutrinos, and to achieve a full-volume position coverage inside the detector. The veto system is used for muon detection, muon induced background study and reduction. It consists of a Water Cherenkov detector and a Top Tracker system. The readout system, the detector control system and the offline system insure efficient and stable data acquisition and processing.

Heterogeneous noise enhances spatial reciprocity

Recent research has identified the heterogeneity as crucial for the evolution of cooperation in spatial population. However, the influence of heterogeneous noise is still lack. Inspired by this interesting question, in this work, we try to incorporate heterogeneous noise into the evaluation of utility, where only a proportion of population possesses noise, whose range can also be tuned. We find that increasing heterogeneous noise monotonously promotes cooperation and even translates the full defection phase (of the homogeneous version) into the complete cooperation phase. Moreover, the promotion effect of this mechanism can be attributed to the leading role of cooperators who have the heterogeneous noise. These type of cooperators can attract more agents penetrating into the robust cooperator clusters, which is beyond the text of traditional spatial reciprocity. We hope that our work may shed light on the understanding of the cooperative behavior in the society.

The Increase of the Functional Entropy of the Human Brain with Age

We use entropy to characterize intrinsic ageing properties of the human brain. Analysis of fMRI data from a large dataset of individuals, using resting state BOLD signals, demonstrated that a functional entropy associated with brain activity increases with age. During an average lifespan, the entropy, which was calculated from a population of individuals, increased by approximately 0.1 bits, due to correlations in BOLD activity becoming more widely distributed. We attribute this to the number of excitatory neurons and the excitatory conductance decreasing with age. Incorporating these properties into a computational model leads to quantitatively similar results to the fMRI data. Our dataset involved males and females and we found significant differences between them. The entropy of males at birth was lower than that of females. However, the entropies of the two sexes increase at different rates, and intersect at approximately 50 years; after this age, males have a larger entropy.

Thermal Diffusivities of Functionalized Pentacene Semiconductors

We have measured the interlayer and in-plane (needle axis) thermal diffusivities of 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-Pn). The needle axis value is comparable to the phonon thermal conductivities of quasi-one dimensional organic metals with excellent pi-orbital overlap, and its value suggests that a significant fraction of heat is carried by optical phonons. Furthermore, the interlayer (c-axis) thermal diffusivity is at least an order of magnitude larger, and this unusual anisotropy implies very strong dispersion of optical modes in the interlayer direction, presumably due to interactions between the silyl-containing side groups. Similar values for both in-plane and interlayer diffusivities have been observed for several other functionalized pentacene semiconductors with related structures.

Bell violation versus geometric measure of quantum discord and their dynamical behavior

Motivated by recent numerous works on the interplay among various measures of quantum correlations, we aim to investigate the relationship between the violation of Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) Bell inequality and geometric measure of quantum discord for two-qubit systems. Exact lower and upper bounds of Bell violation versus geometric discord are obtained for a specific and significant class of states, Bell diagonal states, and the respective states which suffice those bounds are also characterized. The dynamical behavior of these two quantifiers is carefully analyzed in the presence of decoherence, including Markovian, non-Markovian, and non-back-action quantum environments. The results suggest that Bell violation is closely related to geometric discord, like its relationship with other entanglement monotones.

Confinement for Repulsive-Attractive Kernels

We investigate the confinement properties of solutions of the aggregation equation with repulsive-attractive potentials. We show that solutions remain compactly supported in a large fixed ball depending on the initial data and the potential. The arguments apply to the functional setting of probability measures with mildly singular repulsive-attractive potentials and to the functional setting of smooth solutions with a potential being the sum of the Newtonian repulsion at the origin and a smooth suitably growing at infinity attractive potential.

Electrical Properties of Conductive Ge Nanocrystal Thin Films Fabricated by Low Temperature In-situ Growth

Thin films composed of Ge nanocrystals embedded in amorphous SiO2 matrix (Ge-NCs TFs) were prepared using a low temperature in-situ growth method. Unexpected high p-type conductivity was observed in the intrinsic Ge-NCs TFs. Unintentional doping from shallow dopants was excluded as a candidate mechanism of hole generation. Instead, the p-type characteristic was attributed to surface state induced hole accumulation in NCs, and the hole conduction was found to be a thermally activated process involving charge hopping from one NC to its nearest neighbor. Theoretical analysis has shown that the density of surface states in Ge-NCs is sufficient to induce adequate holes for measured conductivity. The film conductivity can be improved significantly by post-growth rapid thermal annealing and this effect is explained by a simple thermodynamic model. The impact of impurities on the conduction properties was also studied. Neither compensation nor enhancement in conduction was observed in the Sb and Ga doped Ge-NCs TFs, respectively. This could be attributed to the fact that these impurities are no longer shallow dopants in NCs and are much less likely to be effectively activated. Finally, the photovoltaic effect of heterojunction diodes employing such Ge-NCs TFs was characterized in order to demonstrate its functionality in device implementation.

The Dearth of Chemically Enriched Warm-Hot Circumgalactic Gas

The circumgalactic medium (CGM) around galaxies is believed to record various forms of galaxy feedback and contain a significant portion of the "missing baryons" of individual dark matter halos. However, clear observational evidence for the existence of the hot CGM is still absent. We use intervening galaxies along 12 background AGNs as tracers to search for X-ray absorption lines produced in the corresponding CGM. Stacking Chandra grating observations with respect to galaxy groups and different luminosities of these intervening galaxies, we obtain spectra with signal-to-noise ratios of 46-72 per 20-mA spectral bin at the expected OVII Kalpha line. We find no detectable absorption lines of CVI, NVII, OVII, OVIII, or NeIX. The high spectral quality allows us to tightly constrain upper limits to the corresponding ionic column densities (in particular log[N(OVII)(cm^{-2})]<=14.2--14.8). These nondetections are inconsistent with the Local Group hypothesis of the X-ray absorption lines at z~0 commonly observed in the spectra of AGNs. These results indicate that the putative CGM in the temperature range of 10^{5.5}-10^{6.3} K may not be able to account for the missing baryons unless the metallicity is less than 10% solar.

Energy Spectra of the Soft X-ray Diffuse Emission in Fourteen Fields Observed with Suzaku

The soft diffuse X-ray emission of twelve fields observed with Suzaku are presented together with two additional fields from previous analyses. All have galactic longitudes 65 deg < l < 295 deg to avoid contributions from the very bright diffuse source that extends at least 30 deg from the Galactic center. The surface brightnesses of the Suzaku nine fields for which apparently uncontaminated ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) were available were statistically consistent with the RASS values, with an upper limit for differences of 17 x 10^{-6} c s^{-1} amin^{-2} in R45}-band. The Ovii and Oviii intensities are well correlated to each other, and Ovii emission shows an intensity floor at ~2 photons s^{-1} cm^{-2 str^{-1} (LU). The high-latitude Oviii emission shows a tight correlation with excess of Ovii emission above the floor, with (Oviii intensity) = 0.5 x [(Ovii intensity) -2 LU], suggesting that temperatures averaged over different line-of-sight show a narrow distribution around ~0.2 keV. We consider that the offset intensity of Ovii arises from the Heliospheric solar wind charge exchange and perhaps from the local hot bubble, and that the excess Ovii (2-7 LU) is emission from more distant parts of the Galaxy. The total bolometric luminosity of this galactic emission is estimated to be 4 x 10^{39} erg s^{-1}, and its characteristic temperature may be related to the virial temperature of the Galaxy.

High-resolution inelastic X-ray scattering studies of the state-resolved differential cross-section of Compton excitations in helium atoms

The state-resolved differential cross sections for both the 1s2 1S0 - 1s2s 1S0 monopolar transition and the 1s2 1S0 - 1s2p 1P1 dipolar transition of atomic helium have been measured over a large momentum transfer region by the high-resolution inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) for the first time. The almost perfect match of the present measurement with the theoretical calculations gives a stringent test of the theoretical method and the calculated wavefunctions. Our results demonstrate that high-resolution IXS is a powerful tool for studying the excitations in atoms and molecules.

Magnetic field-modulated exciton generation in organic semiconductors: an intermolecular quantum correlation effect

Magnetoelectroluminescence (MEL) of organic semiconductor has been experimentally tuned by adopting blended emitting layer consisting of both hole and electron transporting materials. A theoretical model considering intermolecular quantum correlation is proposed to demonstrate two fundamental issues: (1) two mechanisms, spin scattering and spin mixing, dominate the two different steps respectively in the process of the magnetic field modulated generation of exciton; (2) the hopping rate of carriers determines the intensity of MEL. Calculation successfully predicts the increase of singlet excitons in low field with little change of triplet exciton population.

The FP420 R&D Project: Higgs and New Physics with forward protons at the LHC

We present the FP420 R&D project, which has been studying the key aspects of the development and installation of a silicon tracker and fast-timing detectors in the LHC tunnel at 420 m from the interaction points of the ATLAS and CMS experiments. These detectors would measure precisely very forward protons in conjunction with the corresponding central detectors as a means to study Standard Model (SM) physics, and to search for and characterise New Physics signals. This report includes a detailed description of the physics case for the detector and, in particular, for the measurement of Central Exclusive Production, pp --> p + phi + p, in which the outgoing protons remain intact and the central system phi may be a single particle such as a SM or MSSM Higgs boson. Other physics topics discussed are gamma-gamma and gamma-p interactions, and diffractive processes. The report includes a detailed study of the trigger strategy, acceptance, reconstruction efficiencies, and expected yields for a particular p p --> p H p measurement with Higgs boson decay in the b-bbar mode. The document also describes the detector acceptance as given by the LHC beam optics between the interaction points and the FP420 location, the machine backgrounds, the new proposed connection cryostat and the moving ("Hamburg") beam-pipe at 420 m, and the radio-frequency impact of the design on the LHC. The last part of the document is devoted to a description of the 3D silicon sensors and associated tracking performances, the design of two fast-timing detectors capable of accurate vertex reconstruction for background rejection at high-luminosities, and the detector alignment and calibration strategy.

X-raying the Intergalactic OVI Absorbers

The observed intergalactic OVI absorbers at z>0 have been regarded as a significant reservoir of the ``missing baryons''. However, to fully understand how these absorbers contribute to the baryon inventory, it is crucial to determine whether the systems are collisionally ionized or photoionized (or both). Using the identified intergalactic OVI absorbers as tracers, we search for the corresponding X-ray absorption lines, which are useful for finding the missing baryons and for revealing the nature of the OVI absorbers. Stacking the Chandra grating spectra along six AGN sight lines, we obtain three spectra with signal-to-noise ratios of 32, 28, and 10 per 12.5 mA spectral bin around the expected OVII Kalpha wavelength. These spectra correspond to OVI absorbers with various dynamic properties. We find no detectable NeIX, OVII, OVIII, NVII, or CVI absorption lines in the spectra, but the high counting statistics allows us to obtain firm upper limits on the corresponding ionic column densities (in particular N(OVII)<=10 N(OVI) on average at the 95% confidence level). Jointly analyzing these non-detected X-ray lines with the averaged OVI column density, we further limit the average temperature of the OVI-bearing gas to be log[T(K)]<=5.7 in collisional ionization equilibrium. We discuss the implications of these results for physical properties of the putative warm-hot intergalactic medium and its detection in future X-ray observations.
