A Study on the radon removal performance of low background activated carbon

Radon and radon daughters pose significant backgrounds to rare-event searching experiments. Activated carbon, which has very strong adsorption capacity for radon, can be used for radon removal and radon enrichment. The internal $^{226}$Ra concentration ultimately limits its radon enrichment ability. In order to measure the intrinsic background and study the radon adsorption capability of Saratech activated carbon at various temperatures, a radon-emanation measurement system with a high-sensitivity radon detector and an adsorption-performance research-system have been developed. In this paper, a 0.71~mBq/m$^3$ high-sensitivity radon detector and measurement details of the radon-adsorption capability of Saratech activated carbon at low temperature will be presented.

Polar metamaterials: A new outlook on resonance for cloaking applications

Rotationally resonant metamaterials are leveraged to answer a longstanding question regarding the existence of transformation-invariant elastic materials and the ad-hoc possibility of transformationbased passive cloaking in full plane elastodynamics. Combined with tailored lattice geometries, rotational resonance is found to induce a polar and chiral behavior; that is a behavior lacking stress and mirror symmetries, respectively. The central, and simple, idea is that a population of rotating resonators can exert a density of body torques strong enough to modify the balance of angular momentum on which hang these symmetries. The obtained polar metamaterials are used as building blocks of a cloaking device. Numerical tests show satisfactory cloaking performance under pressure and shear probing waves, further coupled through a free boundary. The work sheds new light on the phenomenon of resonance in metamaterials and should help put transformation elastodynamics on equal footing with transformation acoustics and optics.

Enhanced flexural wave sensing by adaptive gradient-index metamaterials

Increasing sensitivity and signal to noise ratios of conventional wave sensors is an interesting topic in structural health monitoring, medical imaging, aerospace and nuclear instrumentation. Here, we report the concept of a gradient piezoelectric self-sensing system by integrating shunting circuitry into conventional sensors. By tuning circuit elements properly, both the quality and quantity of the flexural wave measurement data can be significantly increased for new adaptive sensing applications. Through analytical, numerical and experimental studies, we demonstrate that the metamaterial-based sensing system (MBSS) with gradient bending stiffness can be designed by connecting gradient negative capacitance circuits to an array of piezoelectric patches (sensors). We further demonstrate that the proposed system can achieve more than two orders of magnitude amplification of flexural wave signals to overcome the detection limit. This research encompasses fundamental advancements in the MBSS with improved performance and functionalities, and will yield significant advances for a range of applications.

Modulation Instability and Phase-Shifted Fermi-Pasta-Ulam Recurrence

Instabilities are common phenomena frequently observed in nature, sometimes leading to unexpected catastrophes and disasters in seemingly normal conditions. The simplest form of instability in a distributed system is its response to a harmonic modulation. Such instability has special names in various branches of physics and is generally known as modulation instability (MI). The MI is tightly related to Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) recurrence since breather solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) are known to accurately describe growth and decay of modulationally unstable waves in conservative systems. Here, we report theoretical, numerical and experimental evidence of the effect of dissipation on FPU cycles in a super wave tank, namely their shift in a determined order. In showing that ideal NLSE breather solutions can describe such dissipative nonlinear dynamics, our results may impact the interpretation of a wide range of new physics scenarios.

Core-dominance parameter, black hole mass and jet-disc connection in Fermi blazars

We study the relationship between jet power and accretion for Fermi and non-Fermi blazars, respectively. We also compare the relevant parameter between them. Our main results are as follows. (i) Fermi and non-Fermi blazars have significant difference in redshift, black hole mass, and broad line luminosity. (ii) Fermi blazars have higher average core-dominance parameter than non-Fermi blazars, which suggests that Fermi blazars have strong beaming effect. (iii) We find significant correlation between broad line emission and jet power for Fermi and non-Fermi blazars, respectively, which suggests a direct tight connection between jet and accretion. (iv) The accretion and black hole mass may have a different contribution to jet power for Fermi and non-Fermi blazars, respectively.

CuBr2-A New Multiferroic Material with High Critical Temperature

A new multiferroic material, CuBr2, is reported for the first time. CuBr2 has not only a high transition temperature (close to liquid nitrogen temperature) but also low dielectric loss and strong magnetoelectric coupling. These findings reveal the importance of anion effects in the search for the high temperature multiferroics materials among these low-dimensional spin systems.

The first candidate for chiral nuclei in the $A\sim80$ mass region: $^{80}$Br

Excited states of $^{80}$Br have been investigated via the $^{76}$Ge($^{11}$B, $α$3n) and $^{76}$Ge($^{7}$Li, 3n) reactions and a new $ΔI$ = 1 band has been identified which resides $\sim$ 400 keV above the yrast band. Based on the experimental results and their comparison with the triaxial particle rotor model calculated ones, a chiral character of the two bands within the $πg_{9/2}\otimes νg_{9/2}$ configuration is proposed, which provides the first evidence for chirality in the $A\sim80$ region.

YBCO-buffered NdBCO film with higher thermal stability in seeding REBCO Growth

In this work, we report a strengthened superheating effect caused by a buffering YBa2Cu3Oy (Y123 or YBCO) layer in the Nd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-y (Nd123 or NdBCO) thin film with MgO substrate (i.e., NdBCO/YBCO/MgO thin film). In the cold-seeding melt-textured (MT) growth, the NdBCO/YBCO/MgO film presented an even higher superheating level, about 20 °C higher than that of non-buffered NdBCO film (i.e., NdBCO/MgO film). Using this NdBCO/YBCO/MgO film as seeds and undergoing a maximum processing temperature (Tmax) up to 1120 °C, we succeeded in growing various RE1+xBa2-xCu3O7-y (REBCO, RE=rare elements) bulk superconductors, including Gd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-y (GdBCO), Sm1+xBa2-xCu3O7-y (SmBCO) and NdBCO that have high peritectic temperatures (Tp). The pole figure (X-Ray ϕ-scan) measurement reveals that the NdBCO/YBCO/MgO film has better in-plane alignment than the NdBCO/MgO film, indicating that the induced intermediate layer improves the crystallinity of the NdBCO film, which could be the main origin of the enhanced thermal stability. In short, possessing higher thermal stability and enduring a higher Tmax in the MT process, the NdBCO/YBCO/MgO film is beneficial to the growth of bulk superconductors in two aspects: (1) broad application for high-Tp REBCO materials; (2) effective suppression against heterogeneous nucleation, which is of great assistance in growing large and high-performance REBCO crystals.
