The new APD-Based Readout of the Crystal Barrel Calorimeter -- An Overview

The Crystal Barrel is an electromagnetic calorimeter consisting of 1380 CsI(Tl) scintillators, and is currently installed at the CBELSA/TAPS experiment where it is used to detect decay products from photoproduction of mesons. The readout of the Crystal Barrel has been upgraded in order to integrate the detector into the first level of the trigger and to increase its sensitivity for neutral final states. The new readout uses avalanche photodiodes in the front-end and a dual back-end with branches optimized for energy and time measurement, respectively. An FPGA-based cluster finder processes the whole hit pattern within less than 100 ns. The important downside of APDs -- the temperature dependence of their gain -- is handled with a temperature stabilization and a compensating bias voltage supply. Additionally, a light pulser system allows the APDs' gains to be measured during beamtimes.

Determination of complete experiments using graphs

This work presents ideas for the determination of complete experiments using graphs, which are based on a recently published, modified form of Moravcsik's theorem. The lucid representation of complete experiments in terms of graphs, which is at the heart of the theorem, leads to a fully automated procedure that can determine complete experiments for in principle any reaction, i.e. for any number of amplitudes $N$. For larger $N$ (i.e. $N \geq 4$), the sets determined according to Moravcsik's theorem turn out to be slightly overcomplete. A new type of directional graph has been proposed recently, which can decrease the length of the complete sets of observables in some of these cases. The presented results are relevant for reactions with larger numbers of spin-amplitudes, which are at the center of interest in forthcoming measurements, such as single-meson electroproduction $(N=6)$, two-meson photoproduction $(N=8)$ or vector-meson photoproduction $(N=12)$.

Application of the single-channel, single-energy AA/PWA method to $K^{+} Λ$ photoproduction

The new single-channel, single-energy partial wave analysis method based on a simultaneous use of amplitude and partial wave analysis called AA/PWA, developed and tested on $η$ photoproduction in ref. Svarc et al, PRC 102, 064609 (2020), is applied to the $K^{+} Λ$ photoproduction for the center-of-mass energy range of 1625 MeV $< W <$ 2296 MeV. A complete set of multipoles has been created. The advantages of the method have been confirmed, and a comparison with the only existing single-energy partial wave analysis of $K^{+} Λ$ photoproduction given in refs. Anisovich et al PRL 119 062004 (2017) and Anisovich et al Eur. Phys. J. A 53: 242 (2017) is presented. We confirm the size and shape of Bonn-Gatchina multipoles, but we do not confirm the unambiguous interpretation of the structure in the $M_{1-}$ multipole as a $N(1880) \frac{1}{2}^{+}$ resonance. The decisive role of the self-consistency of the world database is emphasized.

Observation of a structure in the M$_{pη}$ invariant mass distribution near 1700 MeV/$c^2$ in the $\mathbf{γp \rightarrow p π^0 η} $ reaction

The reaction $γp \rightarrow p π^0 η$ has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS detector at the electron stretcher accelerator ELSA in Bonn for incident photon energies from threshold up to 3.1 GeV. This paper has been motivated by the recently claimed observation of a narrow structure in the M$_{Nη}$ invariant mass distribution at a mass of 1678 MeV/$c^2$. The existence of this structure cannot be confirmed in the present work. Instead, for E$_γ$ = 1400 - 1500 MeV and the cut M$_{pπ^0} \le 1190 $ MeV/$c^2$ a statistically significant structure in the M$_{pη}$ invariant mass distribution near 1700 MeV/$c^2$ is observed with a width of $Γ\approx 35$ MeV/$c^2$ while the mass resolution is $σ_{res}$ = 5 MeV/$c^2$. Increasing the incident photon energy from 1420 to 1540 MeV this structure shifts in mass from $\approx$ 1700MeV/c$^2$ to $\approx$ 1725 MeV/$c^2$; the width increases to about 50 MeV/$c^2$ and decreases thereafter. The cross section associated with this structure reaches a maximum of $\approx$ 100 nb around E$_γ \approx$ 1490 MeV (W $\approx $ 1920 MeV), which coincides with the $p a_0$ threshold. Three scenarios are discussed which might be the origin of this structure in the M$_{pη}$ invariant mass distribution. The most likely interpretation is that it is due to a triangular singularity in the $γp \rightarrow p a_0 \rightarrow p π^0 η$ reaction

Amplitude- and truncated partial-wave analyses combined: A novel, almost theory-independent single-channel method for extracting photoproduction multipoles directly from measured data

Amplitude- and truncated partial-wave analyses are combined into a single procedure and a novel, almost theory-independent single-channel method for extracting multipoles directly from measured data is developed. In practice, we have created a two-step procedure which is fitted to the same data base: in the first step we perform an energy independent amplitude analysis where continuity is achieved by constraining the amplitude phase, and the result of this first step is then taken as a constraint for the second step where a constrained, energy independent, truncated partial-wave analysis is done. The method is tested on the world collection of data for $η$ photoproduction, and the obtained fit-results are very good. The sensitivity to different possible choices of amplitude phase is investigated and it is demonstrated that the present data base is insensitive to notable phase changes, due to an incomplete database. New measurements are recommended to remedy the problem.

Determining the dominant partial wave contributions from angular distributions of single- and double-polarization observables in pseudoscalar meson photoproduction

This work presents a simple method to determine the significant partial wave contributions to experimentally determined observables in pseudoscalar meson photoproduction. First, fits to angular distributions are presented and the maximum orbital angular momentum $\text{L}_{\mathrm{max}}$ needed to achieve a good fit is determined. Then, recent polarization measurements for $γp \rightarrow π^{0} p$ from ELSA, GRAAL, JLab and MAMI are investigated according to the proposed method. This method allows us to project high-spin partial wave contributions to any observable as long as the measurement has the necessary statistical accuracy. We show, that high precision and large angular coverage in the polarization data are needed in order to be sensitive to high-spin resonance-states and thereby also for the finding of small resonance contributions. This task can be achieved via interference of these resonances with the well-known states. For the channel $γp \rightarrow π^{0} p$, those are the $N(1680)\frac{5}{2}^{+}$ and $Δ(1950)\frac{7}{2}^{+}$, contributing to the $F$-waves.

Moravcsik's theorem on complete sets of polarization observables reexamined

We revisit Moravcsik's theorem on the unique extraction of amplitudes from polarization observables, which has been originally published in 1985. The proof is (re-) written in a more formal and detailed way and the theorem is corrected for the special case of an odd number of amplitudes (this case was treated incorrectly in the original publication). Moravcsik's theorem, in the modified form, can be applied in principle to the extraction of an arbitrary number of $N$ helicity amplitudes. The uniqueness theorem is then applied to hadronic reactions involving particles with spin. The most basic example is Pion-Nucleon scattering ($N=2$), the first non-trivial example is pseudoscalar meson photoproduction ($N=4$) and the most technically involved case treated here is given by pseudoscalar meson electroproduction ($N=6$). The application of Moravcsik's theorem to electroproduction yields new results, which for the first time provide insights into the structure and content of complete sets for this particular process. The uniqueness-statements for the various reactions are compared and an attempt is made to recognize general patterns, which emerge under the application of the theorem.

The complete experiment for photoproduction of pseudoscalar mesons in a truncated partial wave analysis

The complete experiment problem in the truncated partial wave analysis of pseudoscalar meson photoproduction with suppressed t-channel exchanges is investigated. The focus is set to ambiguities of the group S observables with the unpolarized differential cross section, $σ_0$, and the three single-spin observables, $Σ$, $T$ and $P$. For this purpose, the approach and formalism already worked out by Omelaenko in 1981 is revisited in this work. A numerical study using multipoles of the PWA solution MAID2007 shows how only one additional double polarization observable can resolve all ambiguities. Therefore, the possibility emerges to perform a complete experiment with only five observables.

Determination of the real part of the η'-Nb optical potential

The excitation function and momentum distribution of η' mesons have been measured in photoproduction off 93^Nb in the energy range of 1.2-2.9 GeV. The experiment has been performed with the combined Crystal Barrel and MiniTAPS detector system, using tagged photon beams from the ELSA electron accelerator. Information on the sign and magnitude of the real part of the η'-Nb potential has been extracted from a comparison of the data with model calculations. An attractive potential of -(41 \pm 10(stat) \pm 15(syst)) MeV depth at normal nuclear matter density is deduced within model uncertainties. This value is consistent with the potential depth of -(37 \pm 10(stat) \pm 10(syst)) MeV obtained in an earlier measurement for a light nucleus (carbon). This relatively shallow η'-nucleus potential will make the search for η'-nucleus bound states more difficult.

Momentum dependence of the imaginary part of the $ω$- and $η^\prime$-nucleus optical potential

The photoproduction of $ω$ and $η^\prime$ mesons off carbon and niobium nuclei has been measured as a function of the meson momentum for incident photon energies of 1.2-2.9 GeV at the electron accelerator ELSA. The mesons have been identified via the $ω\rightarrow π^0 γ\rightarrow 3 γ$ and $η^\prime\rightarrow π^0 π^0η\rightarrow 6 γ$ decays, respectively, registered with the CBELSA/TAPS detector system. From the measured meson momentum distributions the momentum dependence of the transparency ratio has been determined for both mesons. Within a Glauber analysis the in-medium $ω$ and $η^\prime$ widths and the corresponding absorption cross sections have been deduced as a function of the meson momentum. The results are compared to recent theoretical predictions for the in-medium $ω$ width and $η^\prime$-N absorption cross sections. The energy dependence of the imaginary part of the $ω$- and $η^\prime$-nucleus optical potential has been extracted. The finer binning of the present data compared to the existing data allows a more reliable extrapolation towards the production threshold. The modulus of the imaginary part of the $η^\prime$ nucleus potential is found to be about three times smaller than recently determined values of the real part of the $η^\prime$-nucleus potential, which makes the $η^\prime$ meson a suitable candidate for the search for meson-nucleus bound states. For the $ω$ meson, the modulus of the imaginary part near threshold is comparable to the modulus of the real part of the potential. As a consequence, only broad structures can be expected which makes the observation of $ω$ mesic states very difficult experimentally.

Photon asymmetry measurements of $\overrightarrowγ \mathrm{p} \rightarrow π^{0} \mathrm{p}$ for E$_γ$=320$-$650 MeV

High statistics measurements of the photon asymmetry $\mathrmΣ$ for the $\overrightarrowγ$p$\rightarrowπ^{0}$p reaction have been made in the center of mass energy range W=1214-1450 MeV. The data were measured with the MAMI A2 real photon beam and Crystal Ball/TAPS detector systems in Mainz, Germany. The results significantly improve the existing world data and are shown to be in good agreement with previous measurements, and with the MAID, SAID, and Bonn-Gatchina predictions. We have also combined the photon asymmetry results with recent cross-section measurements from Mainz to calculate the profile functions, $\check{\mathrmΣ}$ (= $σ_{0}\mathrmΣ$), and perform a moment analysis. Comparison with calculations from the Bonn-Gatchina model shows that the precision of the data is good enough to further constrain the higher partial waves, and there is an indication of interference between the very small $F$-waves and the $N(1520) 3/2^{-}$ and $N(1535) 1/2^{-}$ resonances.

The Impact of New Polarization Data from Bonn, Mainz and Jefferson Laboratory on $γp \to πN$ Multipoles

New data on pion-photoproduction off the proton have been included in the partial wave analyses Bonn-Gatchina and SAID and in the dynamical coupled-channel approach Jülich-Bonn. All reproduce the recent new data well: the double polarization data for E, G, H, P and T in $γp \to π^0 p$ from ELSA, the beam asymmetry $Σ$ for $γp \to π^0 p$ and $π^+ n$ from Jefferson Laboratory, and the precise new differential cross section and beam asymmetry data $Σ$ for $γp \to π^0 p$ from MAMI. The new fit results for the multipoles are compared with predictions not taking into account the new data. The mutual agreement is improved considerably but still far from being perfect.

Studies on a complete experiment for single pseudoscalar meson photoproduction

The complete experiment problem for photoproduction of single pseudoscalar mesons is reviewed briefly. If this problem is investigated in the context of a truncated partial wave analysis, the chance emerges to obtain a unique multipole solution measuring less polarization observables than demanded by the classical solution of the problem that is formulated in terms of spin amplitudes.

The N(1520) 3/2- helicity amplitudes from an energy-independent multipole analysis based on new polarization data on photoproduction of neutral pions

New data on the polarization observables T, P, and H for the reaction $γp \to pπ^0$ are reported. The results are extracted from azimuthal asymmetries when a transversely polarized butanol target and a linearly polarized photon beam are used. The data were taken at the Bonn electron stretcher accelerator ELSA using the CBELSA/TAPS detector. These and earlier data are used to perform a truncated energy-independent partial wave analysis in sliced-energy bins. This energy-independent analysis is compared to the results from energy-dependent partial wave analyses.

Study of ambiguities in $π^-p\to ΛK^0$ scattering amplitudes

Amplitudes for the reaction $π^-p\to ΛK^0$ are reconstructed from data on the differential cross section $dσ/dΩ$, the recoil polarization $P$, and on the spin rotation parameter $β$. At low energies, no data on $β$ exist, resulting in ambiguities. An approximation using $S$ and $P$ waves leads only to a fair description of the data on $dσ/dΩ$ and $P$; in this case, there are two sets of amplitudes. Including $D$ waves, the data on $dσ/dΩ$ and $P$ are well reproduced by the fit but now, there are several distinct solutions which describe the data with identical precision. In the range where the spin rotation parameter $β$ was measured, a full and unambiguous reconstruction of the partial wave amplitudes is possible. The energy-independent amplitudes are compared to the energy dependent amplitudes which resulted from a coupled channel fit (BnGa2011-02) to a large data set including both pion and photo-induced reactions. Significant deviations are observed. Consistency between energy dependent and energy independent solutions by choosing the energy independent solution which is closest to the energy dependent solution. In a second step, the {\it known} energy dependent solution for low (or high) partial waves is imposed and only the high (or low) partial waves are fitted leading to smaller uncertainties.

Well-established nucleon resonances revisited by double-polarization measurements

The first measurement is reported of the double-polarization observable G in photoproduction of neutral pions off protons, covering the photon energy range from 620 to 1120 MeV and the full solid angle. G describes the correlation between the photon polarization plane and the scattering plane for protons polarized along the direction of the incoming photon. The observable is highly sensitive to contributions from baryon resonances. The new results are compared to the predictions from SAID, MAID, and BnGa partial wave analyses. In spite of the long-lasting efforts to understand γp -> pπ 0 as the simplest photoproduction reaction, surprisingly large differences between the new data and the latest predictions are observed which are traced to different contributions of the N (1535) with spin-parity J^P = 1/2^- and N (1520) with J^P = 3/2^- . In the third resonance region, where N (1680) with J^P = 5/2^+ production dominates, the new data are reasonably close to the predictions.
