Spin and mass currents near a moving magnetic obstacle in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the spatial distributions of the spin and mass currents generated by a moving Gaussian magnetic obstacle in a symmetric, two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in two dimensions. We analytically describe the current distributions for a slow obstacle and show that the spin and the mass currents exhibit characteristic spatial structures resembling those of electromagnetic fields around dipole moments. When the obstacle's velocity increases, we numerically observe that the flow pattern maintains its overall structure while the spin polarization induced by the obstacle is enhanced with an increased spin current. We investigate the critical velocity of the magnetic obstacle based on the local criterion of Landau energetic instability and find that it decreases almost linearly as the magnitude of the obstacle's potential increases, which can be directly tested in current experiments.

Collisional Dynamics of Half-Quantum Vortices in a Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensate

We present an experimental study on the interaction and dynamics of half-quantum vortices (HQVs) in an antiferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. By exploiting the orbit motion of a vortex dipole in a trapped condensate, we perform a collision experiment of two HQV pairs, and observe that the scattering motions of the HQVs is consistent with the short-range vortex interaction that arises from nonsingular magnetized vortex cores. We also investigate the relaxation dynamics of turbulent condensates containing many HQVs, and demonstrate that spin wave excitations are generated by the collisional motions of the HQVs. The short-range vortex interaction and the HQV-magnon coupling represent two characteristics of the HQV dynamics in the spinor superfluid.

Optical pumping effect in absorption imaging of F=1 atomic gases

We report our study of the optical pumping effect in absorption imaging of $^{23}$Na atoms in the $F=1$ hyperfine spin states. Solving a set of rate equations for the spin populations in the presence of a probe beam, we obtain an analytic expression for the optical signal of the $F=1$ absorption imaging. Furthermore, we verify the result by measuring the absorption spectra of $^{23}$Na Bose-Einstein condensates prepared in various spin states with different probe beam pulse durations. The analytic result can be used in the quantitative analysis of $F=1$ spinor condensate imaging and readily applied to other alkali atoms with $I=3/2$ nuclear spin such as $^{87}$Rb.

Precise measurements of optical Feshbach resonances of $^{174}$Yb atoms

We present precise measurements of the optical Feshbach resonances (OFRs) of $^{174}$Yb atoms for the intercombination transition. We measure the photoassociation (PA) spectra of a pure $^{174}$Yb Bose-Einstein condensate, and determine the dependence of OFRs to PA laser intensities and frequencies for four least bound vibrational levels near the intercombination transition. We confirm that our measurements are consistent with the temporal decay of a BEC subjected to a PA beam in the vicinity of the fourth vibrational level from the dissociation limit.

Rotating a Bose-Einstein condensate by shaking an anharmonic axisymmetric magnetic potential

We present an experimental method for rotating a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an axisymmetric magnetic potential. This method is based on the anharmonicity of the trapping potential, which couples the center-of-mass motion of the condensate to its internal motion. By circularly shaking the trapping potential, we generate a circular center-of-mass motion of the condensate around the trap center. The circulating condensate undergoes rotating shape deformation and eventually relaxes into a rotating condensate with a vortex lattice. We discuss the vortex nucleation mechanism and in particular, the role of the thermal cloud in the relaxation process. Finally, we investigate the dependence of the vortex nucleation on the elliptical polarization of the trap shaking. The response of the condensate is asymmetric with respect to the sign of the shaking polarization, demonstrating the gauge field effect due to the spin texture of the condensate in the magnetic potential.

Scintillation and charge extraction from the tracks of energetic electrons in superfluid helium-4

An energetic electron passing through liquid helium causes ionization along its track. The ionized electrons quickly recombine with the resulting positive ions, which leads to the production of prompt scintillation light. By applying appropriate electric fields, some of the ionized electrons can be separated from their parent ions. The fraction of the ionized electrons extracted in a given applied field depends on the separation distance between the electrons and the ions. We report the determination of the mean electron-ion separation distance for charge pairs produced along the tracks of beta particles in superfluid helium at 1.5 K by studying the quenching of the scintillation light under applied electric fields. Knowledge of this mean separation parameter will aid in the design of particle detectors that use superfluid helium as a target material.

Understanding Ultracold Neutron Production in Oxygen Solids from Volume and Temperature Dependent Yields

We present experimental data on ultracold neutron (UCN) production in solid oxygen from 5 K to 50 K. The experiment used 3 cells of different dimensions in order to study the excess UCN elastic scattering in s-O$_2$ due to source density non-uniformities. We present a combined $χ^2$ analysis with the aid of Monte-Carlo simulations which contain the detailed physics of UCN transport as well as cold neutron attenuation. The results validate the UCN production and upscattering cross-sections extracted from the dynamic structure function derived from inelastic neutron scattering, and illustrate the role of magnetic scattering in enhancing UCN production in s-O$_2$.

Ultracold Neutron Production in a Pulsed Neutron Beam Line

We present the results of an Ultracold neutron (UCN) production experiment in a pulsed neutron beam line at the Los Alamos Neutron Scattering Center. The experimental apparatus allows for a comprehensive set of measurements of UCN production as a function of target temperature, incident neutron energy, target volume, and applied magnetic field. However, the low counting statistics of the UCN signal expected can be overwhelmed by the large background associated with the scattering of the primary cold neutron flux that is required for UCN production. We have developed a background subtraction technique that takes advantage of the very different time-of-flight profiles between the UCN and the cold neutrons, in the pulsed beam. Using the unique timing structure, we can reliably extract the UCN signal. Solid ortho-D$_2$ is used to calibrate UCN transmission through the apparatus, which is designed primarily for studies of UCN production in solid O$_2$. In addition to setting the overall detection efficiency in the apparatus, UCN production data using solid D$_2$ suggest that the UCN upscattering cross-section is smaller than previous estimates, indicating the deficiency of the incoherent approximation widely used to estimate inelastic cross-sections in the thermal and cold regimes.

Pion Production by Protons on a Thin Beryllium Target at 6.4, 12.3, and 17.5 GeV/c Incident Proton Momenta

An analysis of inclusive pion production in proton-beryllium collisions at 6.4, 12.3, and 17.5 GeV/c proton beam momentum has been performed. The data were taken by Experiment 910 at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The differential $π^+$ and $π^-$ production cross sections ($d^2σ/dpdΩ$) are measured up to 400 mRad in $θ_π$ and up to 6 GeV/c in $p_π$. The measured cross section is fit with a Sanford-Wang parameterization.

Micromegas TPC studies at high magnetic fields using the charge dispersion signal

The International Linear Collider (ILC) Time Projection Chamber (TPC) transverse space-point resolution goal is 100 microns for all tracks including stiff 90 degree tracks with the full 2 meter drift. A Micro Pattern Gas Detector (MPGD) readout TPC can achieve the target resolution with existing techniques using 1 mm or narrower pads at the expense of increased detector cost and complexity. The new MPGD readout technique of charge dispersion can achieve good resolution without resorting to narrow pads. This has been demonstrated previously for 2 mm x 6 mm pads with GEMs and Micromegas in cosmic ray tests and in a KEK beam test in a 1 Tesla magnet. We have recently tested a Micromegas-TPC using the charge dispersion readout concept in a high field super-conducting magnet at DESY. The measured Micromegas gain was found to be constant within 0.5% for magnetic fields up to 5 Tesla. With the strong suppression of transverse diffusion at high magnetic fields, we measure a flat 50 micron resolution at 5 Tesla over the full 15 cm drift length of our prototype TPC.
