Search for Cosmic Ray Electron Boosted Dark Matter with the CDEX-10 Experiment

We present new constraints on the cosmic ray electron boosted light dark matter (CReDM) using the 205.4 kg$\cdot$day data of the CDEX-10 experiment located at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. The cosmic ray electron spectrum and distribution in the Galaxy are generated by the $\tt GALPROP$ code package. In the calculation process of DM-electron scattering process in the Galaxy, we consider the energy-dependency of the DM-electron scattering cross section. The constraints on CReDM are set for both heavy and light mediator scenarios using the CDEX-10 dataset. The result exceeds previous Standard Halo Model (SHM) limits for DM mass lower than 0.6 MeV in heavy mediator case and corresponds to the best sensitivity among all direct detection experiments from 1 keV to 0.5 MeV in the light mediator scenario.

Constraints on inelastic dark matter from the CDEX-1B experiment

We present limits on spin-independent inelastic weakly interacting massive particles (WIMP)-nucleus scattering using the 737.1 kg$\cdot$day dataset from the CDEX-1B experiment. Expected nuclear recoil spectra for various inelastic WIMP masses $m_χ$ and mass splittings $δ$ are calculated under the standard halo model. An accurate background model of CDEX-1B is constructed by simulating all major background sources. The model parameters are then determined through maximum likelihood estimation and Markov chain Monte Carlo fitting. The resulting 90\% confidence level upper limits on the WIMP-nucleon cross section $σ_{\mathrm{n}}$ exclude certain DAMA/LIBRA allowed regions: the $χ^2 < 4$ regions for $δ< 30$ keV at $m_χ= 250$ GeV and the $χ^2 < 9$ region for $δ< 50$ keV at $m_χ= 500$ GeV. The method is applicable to other inelastic dark matter scenarios, and the upcoming CDEX-50 experiment is expected to improve sensitivity by four orders of magnitude.

Performance of TPC detector prototype integrated with UV laser tracks for the circular collider

Several new experimental concepts in high-energy particle physics have been proposed in recent years. The physical goals include precisely measuring the properties of particles such as Higgs, Z and W, and even looking for signs of new physics at future colliders. To meet the evolving requirements for particle track detector, Time Projection Chamber(TPC) detector prototype integrated with a UV laser track system was developed for the main track detector at Circular Electron Positron Collider(CEPC). This prototype consists of 6 horizontal laser tracks around TPC detector chamber, a fast electronics readout of 1280 channels, a GEM detector with $200\times 200\,mm^2$ active area, and the DAQ system. The hit resolution, dE/dx resolution and drift velocity were studied by measuring and analyzing using the TPC prototype and UV laser tracks. The dE/dx resolution of the prototype was measured to be $(8.9\pm0.4)\,\%$. Extrapolating this to CEPC TPC with 220 layers and longer track, the resolution was estimated to be $(3.36\pm0.26)\,\%$. All results indicated that the TPC detector prototype integrated with UV laser tracks can work well.

Search for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay of $^{76}$Ge with a Natural Broad Energy Germanium Detector

A natural broad energy germanium (BEGe) detector is operated in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) for a feasibility study of building the next generation experiment of the neutrinoless double-beta (0{$νββ$}) decay of $^{76}$Ge. The setup of the prototype facility, characteristics of the BEGe detector, background reduction methods, and data analysis are described in this paper. A background index of 6.4$\times$10$^{-3}$ counts/(keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$day) is achieved and 1.86 times lower than our previous result of the CDEX-1 detector. No signal is observed with an exposure of 186.4 kg$\cdot$day, thus a limit on the half life of $^{76}$Ge 0$νββ$ decay is set at T$_{1/2}^{0ν}$ $>$ 5.62$\times$10$^{22}$ yr at 90% C.L.. The limit corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass in the range of 4.6 $\sim$ 10.3 eV, dependent on the nuclear matrix elements.

Studies of the Earth shielding effect to direct dark matter searches at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

Dark matter direct detection experiments mostly operate at deep underground laboratories. It is necessary to consider shielding effect of the Earth, especially for dark matter particles interacting with a large cross section. We analyzed and simulated the Earth shielding effect for dark matter at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) with a simulation package, CJPL Earth Shielding Simulation code (CJPL\_ESS), which is applicable to other underground locations. The further constraints on the $χ$-N cross section exclusion regions are derived based on the studies with CDEX experiment data.

Anisotropic transport and quantum oscillations in the quasi-one-dimensional TaNiTe5: Evidence for the nontrivial band topology

The past decade has witnessed the burgeoning discovery of a variety of topological states of matter with distinct nontrivial band topologies. Thus far, most of materials studied possess two-dimensional or three-dimensional electronic structures, with only a few exceptions that host quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) topological electronic properties. Here we present the clear-cut evidence for Dirac fermions in the quasi-1D telluride TaNiTe5. We show that its transport behaviors are highly anisotropic and we observe nontrivial Berry phases via the quantum oscillation measurements. The nontrivial band topology is further corroborated by first-principles calculations. Our results may help to guide the future quest for topological states in this new family of quasi-1D ternary chalcogenides.

Direct Detection Constraints on Dark Photons with CDEX-10 Experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

We report constraints on the dark photon effective kinetic mixing parameter ($κ$) with data taken from two ${p}$-type point-contact germanium detectors of the CDEX-10 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. The 90\% confidence level upper limits on $κ$ of solar dark photon from 205.4 kg-day exposure are derived, probing new parameter space with masses (${m_V}$) from 10 to 300 eV/${c^2}$ in direct detection experiments. Considering dark photon as the cosmological dark matter, limits at 90\% confidence level with ${m_V}$ from 0.1 to 4.0 keV/${c^2}$ are set from 449.6 kg-day data, with a minimum of ${\rm{κ=1.3 \times 10^{-15}}}$ at ${\rm{m_V=200\ eV/c^2}}$.

A Search of Low-Mass WIMPs with p-type Point Contact Germanium Detector in the CDEX-1 Experiment

The CDEX-1 experiment conducted a search of low-mass (< 10 GeV/c2) Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) dark matter at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory using a p-type point-contact germanium detector with a fiducial mass of 915 g at a physics analysis threshold of 475 eVee. We report the hardware set-up, detector characterization, data acquisition and analysis procedures of this experiment. No excess of unidentified events are observed after subtraction of known background. Using 335.6 kg-days of data, exclusion constraints on the WIMP-nucleon spin-independent and spin-dependent couplings are derived.

Measurement of the dead layer thickness in a p-type point contact germanium detector

A 994g mass p-type PCGe detector was deployed by the first phase of the China Dark matter EXperiment aiming at the direct searches of light weakly interacting massive particles. Measuring the thickness of the dead layer of a p-type germanium detector is an issue of major importance since it determines the fiducial mass of the detector. This work reports a method using an uncollimated 133Ba source to determine the dead layer thickness. The experimental design, data analysis and Monte Carlo simulation processes, as well as the statistical and systematic errors are described. An agreement between the experimental data and simulation results was achieved to derive the thickness of the dead layer of 1.02 mm.

CUORE-0 results and prospects for the CUORE experiment

With 741 kg of TeO2 crystals and an excellent energy resolution of 5 keV (0.2%) at the region of interest, the CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment aims at searching for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te with unprecedented sensitivity. Expected to start data taking in 2015, CUORE is currently in an advanced construction phase at LNGS. CUORE projected neutrinoless double beta decay half-life sensitivity is 1.6E26 y at 1 sigma (9.5E25 y at the 90% confidence level), in five years of live time, corresponding to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 40-100 meV (50-130 meV). Further background rejection with auxiliary bolometric detectors could improve CUORE sensitivity and competitiveness of bolometric detectors towards a full analysis of the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy. CUORE-0 was built to test and demonstrate the performance of the upcoming CUORE experiment. It consists of a single CUORE tower (52 TeO2 bolometers of 750 g each, arranged in a 13 floor structure) constructed strictly following CUORE recipes both for materials and assembly procedures. An experiment its own, CUORE-0 is expected to reach a sensitivity to the neutrinoless double beta decay half-life of 130Te around 3E24 y in one year of live time. We present an update of the data, corresponding to an exposure of 18.1 kg y. An analysis of the background indicates that the CUORE performance goal is satisfied while the sensitivity goal is within reach.

Macro deformation twins in single-crystal aluminum

Deformation twinning in pure aluminum has been considered to be a unique property of nanostructured aluminum. A lingering mystery is whether deformation twinning occurs in coarse-grained or single-crystal aluminum, at scales beyond nanotwins. Here, we present the first experimental demonstration of macro deformation twins in single-crystal aluminum formed under ultrahigh strain-rate ($\sim$10$^6$ s$^{-1}$), large shear strain (200$\%$) via dynamic equal channel angular pressing. Deformation twinning is rooted in the rate dependences of dislocation motion and twinning, which are coupled, complementary processes during severe plastic deformation under ultrahigh strain rates.

Searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{130}$Te with CUORE

Neutrinoless double-beta ($0νββ$) decay is a hypothesized lepton-number-violating process that offers the only known means of asserting the possible Majorana nature of neutrino mass. The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an upcoming experiment designed to search for $0νββ$ decay of $^{130}$Te using an array of 988 TeO$_2$ crystal bolometers operated at 10 mK. The detector will contain 206 kg of $^{130}$Te and have an average energy resolution of 5 keV; the projected $0νββ$ decay half-life sensitivity after five years of live time is $1.6\times 10^{26}$ y at $1σ$ ($9.5\times10^{25}$ y at the 90% confidence level), which corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 40--100 meV (50--130 meV). In this paper we review the experimental techniques used in CUORE as well as its current status and anticipated physics reach.

CUORE and beyond: bolometric techniques to explore inverted neutrino mass hierarchy

The CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment will search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{130}$Te. With 741 kg of TeO$_2$ crystals and an excellent energy resolution of 5 keV (0.2%) at the region of interest, CUORE will be one of the most competitive neutrinoless double beta decay experiments on the horizon. With five years of live time, CUORE projected neutrinoless double beta decay half-life sensitivity is $1.6\times 10^{26}$ y at $1σ$ ($9.5\times10^{25}$ y at the 90% confidence level), which corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 40--100 meV (50--130 meV). Further background rejection with auxiliary light detector can significantly improve the search sensitivity and competitiveness of bolometric detectors to fully explore the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy with $^{130}$Te and possibly other double beta decay candidate nuclei.

Exploring the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay in the Inverted Neutrino Hierarchy with Bolometric Detectors

Neutrinoless double beta decay (0nubb) is one of the most sensitive probes for physics beyond the Standard Model, providing unique information on the nature of neutrinos. In this paper we review the status and outlook for bolometric 0nubb decay searches. We summarize recent advances in background suppression demonstrated using bolometers with simultaneous readout of heat and light signals. We simulate several configurations of a future CUORE-like bolometer array which would utilize these improvements and present the sensitivity reach of a hypothetical next-generation bolometric 0nubb experiment. We demonstrate that a bolometric experiment with the isotope mass of about 1 ton is capable of reaching the sensitivity to the effective Majorana neutrino mass (|mee|) of order 10-20 meV, thus completely exploring the so-called inverted neutrino mass hierarchy region. We highlight the main challenges and identify priorities for an R&D program addressing them.

Initial performance of the CUORE-0 experiment

CUORE-0 is a cryogenic detector that uses an array of tellurium dioxide bolometers to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of ^{130}Te. We present the first data analysis with 7.1 kg y of total TeO_2 exposure focusing on background measurements and energy resolution. The background rates in the neutrinoless double-beta decay region of interest (2.47 to 2.57 MeV) and in the α background-dominated region (2.70 to 3.90 MeV) have been measured to be 0.071 \pm 0.011 and 0.019 \pm 0.002 counts/keV/kg/y, respectively. The latter result represents a factor of 6 improvement from a predecessor experiment, Cuoricino. The results verify our understanding of the background sources in CUORE-0, which is the basis of extrapolations to the full CUORE detector. The obtained energy resolution (full width at half maximum) in the region of interest is 5.7 keV. Based on the measured background rate and energy resolution in the region of interest, CUORE-0 half-life sensitivity is expected to surpass the observed lower bound of Cuoricino with one year of live time.

Limits on light WIMPs from the CDEX-1 experiment with a p-type point-contact germanium detector at the China Jingping Underground Laboratory

We report results of a search for light Dark Matter WIMPs with CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, based on 53.9 kg-days of data from a p-type point-contact germanium detector enclosed by a NaI(Tl) crystal scintillator as anti-Compton detector. The event rate and spectrum above the analysis threshold of 475 eVee are consistent with the understood background model. Part of the allowed regions for WIMP-nucleus coherent elastic scattering at WIMP mass of 6-20 GeV are probed and excluded. Independent of interaction channels, this result contradicts the interpretation that the anomalous excesses of the CoGeNT experiment are induced by Dark Matter, since identical detector techniques are used in both experiments.

The physics threshold achieved is 177 eVee ("ee" represents electron equivalent energy) at 50% signal efficiency. Search for 14.4 keV solar axions from M1 transition of Fe-57 with CUORE crystals

We report the results of a search for axions from the 14.4 keV M1 transition from Fe-57 in the core of the sun using the axio-electric effect in TeO2 bolometers. The detectors are 5x5x5 cm3 crystals operated at about 10 mK in a facility used to test bolometers for the CUORE experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. An analysis of 43.65 kg d of data was made using a newly developed low energy trigger which was optimized to reduce the detectors energy threshold. An upper limit of 0.63 c kg-1 d-1 was established at 95% C.L.. From this value, a lower bound at 95% C.L. was placed on the Peccei-Quinn energy scale of fa >= 0.76 10**6 GeV for a value of S=0.55 for the flavor-singlet axial vector matrix element. Bounds are given for the interval 0.15 < S < 0.55.

Sensitivity and Discovery Potential of CUORE to Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay

We present a study of the sensitivity and discovery potential of CUORE, a bolometric double-beta decay experiment under construction at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. Two approaches to the computation of experimental sensitivity for various background scenarios are presented, and an extension of the sensitivity formulation to the discovery potential case is also discussed. Assuming a background rate of 10^-2 cts/(keV kg y), we find that, after 5 years of live time, CUORE has a 1 sigma sensitivity to the neutrinoless double-beta decay half-life of T_1/2(1 sigma) = 1.6 \times 10^26 y and thus a potential to probe the effective Majorana neutrino mass down to 40-100 meV; the sensitivity at 1.64 sigma, which corresponds to 90% C.L., will be T_1/2(1.64 sigma) = 9.5 \times 10^25 y. This range is compared with the claim of observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay in 76Ge and the preferred range of the neutrino mass parameter space from oscillation results.

The low energy spectrum of TeO2 bolometers: results and dark matter perspectives for the CUORE-0 and CUORE experiments

We collected 19.4 days of data from four 750 g TeO2 bolometers, and in three of them we were able to set the energy threshold around 3 keV using a new analysis technique. We found a background rate ranging from 25 cpd/keV/kg at 3 keV to 2 cpd/keV/kg at 25 keV, and a peak at 4.7 keV. The origin of this peak is presently unknown, but its presence is confirmed by a reanalysis of 62.7 kg.days of data from the finished CUORICINO experiment. Finally, we report the expected sensitivities of the CUORE0 (52 bolometers) and CUORE (988 bolometers) experiments to a WIMP annual modulation signal.

Dynamic microscopic structures and dielectric response in the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition for BaTiO3 studied by first-principles molecular dynamics simulation

The dynamic structures of the cubic and tetragonal phase in BaTiO3 and its dielectric response above the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition temperature (Tp) are studied by first-principles molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. It's shown that the phase transition is due to the condensation of one of the transverse correlations. Calculation of the phonon properties for both the cubic and tetragonal phase shows a saturation of the soft mode frequency near 60 cm-1 near Tp and advocates its order-disorder nature. Our first-principles calculation leads directly to a two modes feature of the dielectric function above Tp [Phys. Rev. B 28, 6097 (1983)], which well explains the long time controversies between experiments and theories.

Tc map and superconductivity of simple metals at high pressure

We calculate Tc map in region of weak electron-phonon coupling based on simple phonon spectrum. By using linear-response method and density functional theory, we calculate phonon spectra and Eliashberg functions of simple metals under pressure. Based on the evolutions of superconducting parameters of simple metals on the Tc map with increasing pressure, we find that there are two different responses to pressure for simple metals: (1) enhancing electron-phonon interaction $λ$ such as for La and Li, (2) increasing phonon frequency such as for Pb, Pt. The $λ$ threshold effect is found, which origins from the competition between electron-phonon interaction and electron-electron Coulomb interaction and is the reason why Tc of most superconductors of simple metals are higher than 0.1K.

Towards First-principles Electrochemistry

Chemisorbed molecules at a fuel cell electrode are a very sensitive probe of the surrounding electrochemical environment, and one that can be accurately monitored with different spectroscopic techniques. We develop a comprehensive electrochemical model to study molecular chemisorption at either constant charge or fixed applied voltage, and calculate from first principles the voltage dependence of vibrational frequencies -- the vibrational Stark effect -- for CO adsorbed on close-packed platinum electrodes. The predicted vibrational Stark slopes are found to be in very good agreement with experimental electrochemical spectroscopy data, thereby resolving previous controversies in the quantitative interpretation of in-situ experiments and elucidating the relation between canonical and grand-canonicaldescriptions of vibrational surface phenomena.

Multiferroic Domain Dynamics in Strained Strontium Titanate

Multiferroicity can be induced in strontium titanate by applying biaxial strain, resulting in the coexistence of both ferroelectric and antiferrodistortive domains. The magnitude and sign of the strain imposed on the lattice by design can be used to tune the phase transitions and interactions between these two phenomena. Using optical second harmonic generation, we report a transition from centrosymmetric 4/mmm phase to ferroelectric mm2, followed by an antiferrodistortive transition to a coupled ferroelastic-ferroelectric mm2 phase in a strontium titanate thin film strained in biaxial tension by 0.94%. The results agree well with theoretical first principles and phase-field predictions. Direct imaging of domains arising from the ferroelectric phase transition, and its switching under electric fields is demonstrated using piezoelectric force microscopy. Nonlinear optics combined with phase-field modeling is used to show that the dominant multiferroic domain switching mechanism is through coupled 90 degree ferroelectric-ferroelastic domain wall motion. More broadly, these studies of coexisting ferroelectric (polar) and antiferrodistortive rotation (axial) phenomena could have relevance to multiferroics with coexisting ferroelectric (polar) and magnetic (axial) phenomena.
