Suppression of ferromagnetism and influence of disorder in silicon-substituted CeRh6Ge4

We report a study of isoelectronic chemical substitution in the recently discovered quantum critical ferromagnet CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$. Upon silicon-doping, the ferromagnetic ordering temperature of CeRh$_6$(Ge$_{1-x}$Si$_x$)$_4$ is continuously suppressed, and no transition is observed beyond $x_c$$\approx$0.125. Non-Fermi liquid behavior with $C/T \propto$log($T^*/T$) is observed close to $x_c$, indicating the existence of strong quantum fluctuations, while the $T$-linear behavior observed upon pressurizing the parent compound is absent in the resistivity, which appears to be a consequence of the disorder induced by silicon doping. Our findings provide evidence for the role played by disorder on the unusual ferromagnetic quantum criticality in CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$, and provides further evidence for understanding the origin of this behavior.

A search for prompt gamma-ray counterparts to fast radio bursts in the Insight-HXMT data

No robust detection of prompt electromagnetic counterparts to fast radio bursts (FRBs) has yet been obtained, in spite of several multi-wavelength searches carried out so far. Specifically, X/gamma-ray counterparts are predicted by some models. We planned on searching for prompt gamma-ray counterparts in the Insight-Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) data, taking advantage of the unique combination of large effective area in the keV-MeV energy range and of sub-ms time resolution. We selected 39 FRBs that were promptly visible from the High-Energy (HE) instrument aboard Insight-HXMT. After calculating the expected arrival times at the location of the spacecraft, we searched for a significant excess in both individual and cumulative time profiles over a wide range of time resolutions, from several seconds down to sub-ms scales. Using the dispersion measures in excess of the Galactic terms, we estimated the upper limits on the redshifts. No convincing signal was found and for each FRB we constrained the gamma-ray isotropic-equivalent luminosity and the released energy as a function of emission timescale. For the nearest FRB source, the periodic repeater FRB180916.J0158+65, we find $L_{γ,iso}<5.5\times 10^{47}$ erg/s over 1 s, whereas $L_{γ,iso}<10^{49}-10^{51}$ erg/s for the bulk of FRBs. The same values scale up by a factor of ~100 for a ms-long emission. Even on a timescale comparable with that of the radio pulse itself no keV-MeV emission is observed. A systematic association with either long or short GRBs is ruled out with high confidence, except for subluminous events, as is the case for core-collapse of massive stars (long) or binary neutron star mergers (short) viewed off axis. Only giant flares from extra-galactic magnetars at least ten times more energetic than Galactic siblings are ruled out for the nearest FRB.

Discovery of delayed spin-up behavior following two large glitches in the Crab pulsar, and the statistics of such processes

Glitches correspond to sudden jumps of rotation frequency ($ν$) and its derivative ($\dotν$) of pulsars, the origin of which remains not well understood yet, partly because the jump processes of most glitches are not well time-resolved. There are three large glitches of the Crab pulsar, detected in 1989, 1996 and 2017, which were found to have delayed spin-up processes before the normal recovery processes. Here we report two additional glitches of the Crab pulsar occurred in 2004 and 2011 for which we discovered delayed spin up processes, and present refined parameters of the largest glitch occurred in 2017. The initial rising time of the glitch is determined as $<0.48$ hour. We also carried out a statistical study of these five glitches with observed spin-up processes. The two glitches occurred in 2004 and 2011 have delayed spin-up time scales ($τ_{1}$) of $1.7\pm0.8$\,days and $1.6\pm0.4$\,days, respectively. We find that the $Δν$ vs. $|Δ{\dotν}|$ relation of these five glitches is similar to those with no detected delayed spin-up process, indicating that they are similar to the others in nature except that they have larger amplitudes. For these five glitches, the amplitudes of the delayed spin-up process ($|Δν_{\rm d1}|$) and recovery process ($Δν_{\rm d2}$), their time scales ($τ_{1}$, $τ_{2}$), and permanent changes in spin frequency ($Δν_{\rm p}$) and total frequency step ($Δν_{\rm g}$) have positive correlations. From these correlations, we suggest that the delayed spin-up processes are common for all glitches, but are too short and thus difficult to be detected for most glitches.

Hybridization dynamics in CeCoIn5 revealed by ultrafast optical spectroscopy

We investigate the quasiparticle dynamics in the prototype heavy fermion CeCoIn$_5$ using ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Our results indicate that this material system undergoes hybridization fluctuations before full establishment of the heavy electron coherence, as the temperature decreases from $\sim$120 K ($T^\dagger$) to $\sim$55 K ($T^*$ ). We reveal that the observed anomalous phonon softening and damping reduction below $T^*$ are directly associated with opening of an indirect hybridization gap. We also discover a distinct collective mode with an energy of $\sim$8 meV, which may be the experimental evidence of the predicted unconventional density wave. Our observations provide critical informations for understanding the hybridization dynamics in heavy fermion materials.

Insight-HXMT firm detection of the highest energy fundamental cyclotron resonance scattering feature in the spectrum of GRO J1008-57

We report on the observation of the accreting pulsar GRO J1008-57 performed by Insight-HXMT at the peak of the source's 2017 outburst. Pulsations are detected with a spin period of 93.283(1) s. The pulse profile shows double peaks at soft X-rays, and only one peak above 20 keV. The spectrum is well described by the phenomenological models of X-ray pulsars. A cyclotron resonant scattering feature is detected with very high statistical significance at a centroid energy of $E_{\rm cyc}=90.32_{-0.28}^{+0.32}$ keV, for the reference continuum and line models, HIGHECUT and GABS respectively. Detection is very robust with respect to different continuum models. The line energy is significantly higher than what suggested from previous observations, which provided very marginal evidence for the line. This establishes a new record for the centroid energy of a fundamental cyclotron resonant scattering feature observed in accreting pulsars. We also discuss the accretion regime of the source during the Insight-HXMT observation.

Insight-HXMT insight into switch of the accretion mode: the case of the X-ray pulsar 4U 1901+03

We use the In data collected during the 2019 outburst from X-ray pulsar 4U 1901+03 to complement the orbital parameters reported by Fermi/GBM. Using the Insight-HXMT, we examine the correlation between the derivative of the intrinsic spin frequency and bolometric flux based on accretion torque models. It was found that the pulse profiles significantly evolve during the outburst. The existence of two types of the profile's pattern discovered in the Insight-HXMT data indicates that this source experienced transition between a super-critical and a sub-critical accretion regime during its 2019 outburst. Based on the evolution of the pulse profiles and the torque model, we derive the distance to 4U 1901+03 as 12.4+-0.2 kpc.

Joint Analysis of Energy and RMS Spectra from MAXI J1535-571 with Insight-HXMT

A new black hole X-ray binary (BHXRB) MAXI J1535-571 was discovered by MAXI during its outburst in 2017. Using observations taken by the first Chinese X-ray satellite, the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (dubbed as Insight-HXMT), we perform a joint spectral analysis (2-150 keV) in both energy and time domains. The energy spectra provide the essential input for probing the intrinsic Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) fractional rms spectra (FRS). Our results show that during the intermediate state, the energy spectra are in general consistent with those reported by Swift/XRT and NuSTAR. However, the QPO FRS become harder and the FRS residuals may suggest the presence of either an additional power-law component in the energy spectrum or a turn-over in the intrinsic QPO FRS at high energies.

Structural and magnetic properties of antiferromagnetic Ce$_2$IrGa$_{12}$

We report a study of the structural and magnetic properties of single crystals of Ce$_2$IrGa$_{12}$. Ce$_2$IrGa$_{12}$ crystallizes in a layered tetragonal structure, and undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition below 3.1 K. We characterize the temperature-field phase diagrams of Ce$_2$IrGa$_{12}$ for fields both within the $ab$-plane and along the $c$-axis, where the presence of a field-induced magnetic phase is found for in-plane fields. The ordering temperature is moderately enhanced upon the application of pressures up to 2.3~GPa, suggesting that Ce$_2$IrGa$_{12}$ corresponds to the well localized region of the Doniach phase diagram.

Switches between accretion structures during flares in 4U 1901+03

We report on our analysis of the 2019 outburst of the X-ray accreting pulsar 4U 1901+03 observed with Insight-HXMT and NICER. Both spectra and pulse profiles evolve significantly in the decaying phase of the outburst. Dozens of flares are observed throughout the outburst. They are more frequent and brighter at the outburst peak. We find that the flares, which have a duration from tens to hundreds of seconds, are generally brighter than the persistent emission by a factor of $\sim$ 1.5. The pulse profile shape during the flares can be significantly different than that of the persistent emission. In particular, a phase shift is clearly observed in many cases. We interpret these findings as direct evidence of changes of the pulsed beam pattern, due to transitions between the sub- and super-critical accretion regimes on a short time scale. We also observe that at comparable luminosities the flares' pulse profiles are rather similar to those of the persistent emission. This indicates that the accretion on the polar cap of the neutron star is mainly determined by the luminosity, i.e., the mass accretion rate.

The evolution of the broadband temporal features observed in the black-hole transient MAXI J1820+070 with Insight-HXMT

We study the evolution of the temporal properties of MAXI 1820+070 during the 2018 outburst in its hard state from MJD 58190 to 58289 with Insight-HXMT in a broad energy band 1-150 keV. We find different behaviors of the hardness ratio, the fractional rms and time lag before and after MJD 58257, suggesting a transition occurred at around this point. The observed time lags between the soft photons in the 1-5 keV band and the hard photons in higher energy bands, up to 150 keV, are frequency-dependent: the time lags in the low-frequency range, 2-10 mHz, are both soft and hard lags with a timescale of dozens of seconds but without a clear trend along the outburst; the time lags in the high-frequency range, 1-10 Hz, are only hard lags with a timescale of tens of milliseconds; first increase until around MJD 58257 and decrease after this date. The high-frequency time lags are significantly correlated to the photon index derived from the fit to the quasi-simultaneous NICER spectrum in the 1-10 keV band. This result is qualitatively consistent with a model in which the high-frequency time lags are produced by Comptonization in a jet.

$Υ(nS)$ and $χ_b(nP)$ production at hadron colliders in nonrelativistic QCD

$Υ(nS)$ and $χ_b(nP)$ (n=1,2,3) production at the LHC is studied at next-to-leading order in $α_s$ in nonrelativistic QCD. Feeddown contributions from higher $χ_b$ and $Υ$ states are all considered for lower $Υ$ cross sections and polarizations. The long distance matrix elements (LDMEs) are extracted from the yield data, and then used to make predictions for the $Υ(nS)$ polarizations, which are found to be consistent with the measured polarization data within errors. In particular, the $Υ(3S)$ polarization puzzle can be understood by a large feeddown contribution from $χ_b(3P)$ states. Our results may provide a good description for both cross sections and polarizations of prompt $Υ(nS)$ and $χ_b(nP)$ production at the LHC.

POLAR: Final Calibration and In-Flight Performance of a Dedicated GRB Polarimeter

Gamma-ray polarimetry is a new powerful tool to study the processes responsible for the emission from astrophysical sources and the environments in which this emission takes place. Few successful polarimetric measurements have however been performed thus far in the gamma-ray energy band due to the difficulties involved. POLAR is a dedicated polarimeter designed to perform high precision measurements of the polarization of the emission from gamma-ray burst in the 50-500 keV energy range. This new polarimeter is expected to detect approximately 50 gamma-ray bursts per year while performing high precision polarization measurements on approximately 10 bursts per year. The instrument was launched into lower earth orbit as part of the second Chinese space lab, the Tiangong-2, on September 15th 2016 and has been taking data successfully since being switched on one week after. The instrument uses a segmented scintillator array consisting of 1600 plastic scintillator bars, read out by 25 flat-panel multi-anode photomultipliers, to measure the Compton scattering angles of incoming photons. The small segmentation and relatively large uniform effective area allow the instrument to measure the polarization of a large number of transient events, such as gamma-ray bursts, with an unprecedented precision during its two year life-time. The final flight model underwent detailed calibration prior to launch as well as intensive space qualification tests, a summary of which will be presented in this paper. The instrument design will be discussed first followed by an overview of the on-ground tests, finally the in-orbit behavior as measured during the first weeks of the mission will be presented.

Calibration of Gamma-ray Burst Polarimeter POLAR

Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) are the strongest explosions in the universe which might be associated with creation of black holes. Magnetic field structure and burst dynamics may influence polarization of the emitted gamma-rays. Precise polarization detection can be an ultimate tool to unveil the true GRB mechanism. POLAR is a space-borne Compton scattering detector for precise measurements of the GRB polarization. It consists of a 40$\times$40 array of plastic scintillator bars read out by 25 multi-anode PMTs (MaPMTs). It is scheduled to be launched into space in 2016 onboard of the Chinese space laboratory TG2. We present a dedicated methodology for POLAR calibration and some calibration results based on the combined use of the laboratory radioactive sources and polarized X-ray beams from the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. They include calibration of the energy response, computation of the energy conversion factor vs. high voltage as well as determination of the threshold values, crosstalk contributions and polarization modulation factors.

Yields and polarizations of prompt $\jpsi$ and $\psits$ production in hadronic collisions

We give predictions of $\jpsi$ and $\psits$ yields and polarizations in prompt production at hadron colliders based on non-relativistic QCD factorization formula. We calculate short-distance coefficients of all important color-octet intermediate channels as well as color-singlet channels up to $\mathcal{O}(α_S^4)$, i.e. next-to-leading order in $α_S$. For prompt $\jpsi$ production, we also take into account feeddown contributions from $χ_{cJ}$(J=0,1,2) and $\psits$ decays. Color-singlet long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) are estimated by using potential model, and color-octet LDMEs are extracted by fitting the Tevatron yield data only. The predictions are satisfactory for both yields and polarizations of prompt $\jpsi$ and prompt $\psits$ production at the Tevatron and the LHC. In particular, we find our predictions for polarizations of prompt $\jpsi$ production have only a little difference from our previous predictions for polarizations of direct $\jpsi$ production.

Separation of spacetime and matter in polar oscillations of compact stars

In polar oscillations of compact stars dynamical changes in spacetime and matter are in general coupled together. Based on the theory of stellar pulsation proposed by Allen et al. [Phys. Rev. D 58, 124012 (1998)], we establish a feasible approximation scheme to separate spacetime from matter in such oscillations. Two independent second-order ordinary differential equations are obtained, which lead to accurate determination of p-mode and w-mode quasi-normal modes of compact stars, respectively.

Structure and magnetic properties of Heusler alloy Fe2NiZ (Z=Al, Ga, Si and Ge)

The Heusler alloys Fe2NiZ (Z=Al, Ga, Si and Ge) have been synthesized and investigated focusing on the phase stability and the magnetic properties. The experimental and theoretical results reveal the covalent bonding originated from p-d hybridization takes an important role in these alloys, which dominates the stability of ordered structure but leads to the decline of the band splitting. The electronic structure shows the IV group main group element (Si and Ge) provides stronger covalent effect than that of the III group element (Al and Ga). It has been found that the variations of the physical parameters, lattice constants, critical ordering temperature, magnetic moments and Curie temperature, precisely follow these covalent characters.

Ferromagnetic structures in Mn2CoGa and Mn2CoAl doped by Co, Cu, V, and Ti

The structure and magnetic properties in doped Heusler alloys of Mn2CoGa and Mn2CoAl have been investigated by experiments and calculations. The main group elements of Ga and Al are substituted by the magnetic or non-magnetic transition metals, Co, Cu, V, and Ti in the alloy systems. Three kinds of local ferromagnetic structures, Co-Mn-Co, Mn-Co-Mn and Mn-Co-V, have been found. They embed in the native ferrimagnetic matrix and increase the magnetization with different increments. The Co-Mn-Co ferromagnetic structure shows the largest increment of 6.18μB /atom. In addition, interesting results for non-magnetic Cu increasing the magnetization and the V atom having a large ferromagnetic moment of about 1.0μB have been obtained. The exchange interaction energy can be increased by the newly added Co and depleted by supporting a ferromagnetic coupling in other substitution cases, and showing the variation of the TC. Our calculation of electronic structure verifies the strong d-d hybridization when the three ferromagnetic structures are achieved. It has also been found that the covalent effect from the Ga and Al determines the generation of the local ferromagnetic structure and the tolerance for dopant content.

Phase diagram, ferromagnetic martensitic transformation and magnetoresponsive properties of Fe-doped MnCoGe alloys

The crystal structure and magnetoresponsive properties of Fe-doped MnCoGe alloys have been investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic measurements. By alloying the Fe-containing isostructure compounds into MnCoGe, a magnetostructural transition from paramagnetic austenite to ferromagnetic martensite with large magnetization difference can be realized in a temperature window between the Curie temperatures of the austenite and martensite, resulting in magnetic-field-induced martensitic transformations and large magnetic-entropy changes. A structural and magnetic phase diagram of Fe-doped MnCoGe alloys has been proposed.

Role of covalent hybridization in martensitic structure and magnetic properties of shape memory alloys: the case of Ni50Mn5+xGa35-xCu10

We have investigated the impact of covalent hybridization on martensitic structure and magnetic properties of Ni50Mn5+xGa35-xCu10 shape memory alloys. We found that the lattice distortion ((c-a)/a) of L10 martensite monotonously changes with the substitution of Mn for Ga atoms and shows a kink behavior at Ga(at.%)= 25 due to the weakened covalent effect between main-group and transition-metal atoms. Moreover, owing to the competition between covalence hybridization and magnetic ordering of introduced Mn atoms, the molecular magnetic moment and Curie temperature coincidently show maximums at Ga(at.%)=25 as well. These behaviors are closely associated with corresponding changes of the strength of covalent hybridization. The results therefore suggest that careful control of the concentration of main-group atoms in Heusler alloys can serve as an additional general tuning parameter for searching new multifunctional materials.

Structure, magnetism and magnetic compensation behavior of Co50-xMn25Ga25+x and Co50-xMn25+xGa25 Heusler alloys

The structure, magnetism, magnetic compensation behavior, exchange interaction and electronic structures of Co50-xMn25Ga25+x and Co50-xMn25+xGa25 (x=0-25) alloys have been systematically investigated by both experiments and first-principles calculations. We found that all the samples exhibited body centered cubic structures with a high degree of atomic ordering. With increasing Ga content, the composition dependence of lattice parameters shows a kink point at the middle composition in Co50-xMn25Ga25+x alloys, which can be attributed to the enhanced covalent effect between the Ga and the transition metals. Furthermore, a complicated magnetic competition has been revealed in Co50-xMn25Ga25+x alloys, which causes the Curie temperature dramatically decrease and results in a magnetic moment compensation behavior. In Co50-xMn25+xGa25 alloys, however, with increasing Mn content, an additional ferrimagnetic configuration was established in the native ferromagnetic matrix, which causes the molecular moment monotonously decreases and the exchange interaction enhances gradually. The electronic structure calculations indicate that the Co50-xMn25+xGa25 alloys are likely to be in a coexistence state of the itinerant and localized magnetism. Our study will be helpful to understand the nature of magnetic ordering as well as to tune magnetic compensation and electronic properties of Heusler alloys.

High-frequency behavior of w-mode pulsations of compact stars

We study the asymptotic behavior of the quasi-normal modes (QNMs) of w-mode pulsations of compact stars in the high-frequency regime. We observe that both the axial and polar w-mode QNMs attain similar asymptotic behaviors in spite of the fact that they are described by two totally different differential equation systems. We obtain robust asymptotic formulae relating w-mode QNMs of different polarities and different angular momenta. To explore the physical reason underlying such similarity, we first derive a high-frequency approximation for the polar w-mode oscillations to unify the descriptions for both cases. Then, we develop WKB-type analyses for them and quantitatively explain the observed asymptotic behaviors for polytropic stars and quark stars. We also point out that such asymptotic behaviors for realistic stars are strongly dependent on the equation of state near the stellar surface.

Understanding the $e^+e^-\to D^{(*)+}D^{(*)-}$ processes observed by Belle

We calculate the production cross sections for $D^{*+}D^{*-}$, $D^+D^{*-}$ and $D^+D^-$ in $e^+e^-$ annihilation through one virtual photon in the framework of perturbative QCD with constituent quarks. The calculated cross sections for $D^{*+}D^{*-}$ and $D^+D^{*-}$ production are roughly in agreement with the recent Belle data. The helicity decomposition for $D^{*}$ meson production is also calculated. The fraction of the $D^{*\pm}_LD^{*\mp}_T$ final state in $e^+e^-\to D^{*+}D^{*-}$ process is found to be 65%. The fraction of $DD^*_T$ production is 100% and $DD^*_L$ is forbidden in $e^+e^-$ annihilation through one virtual photon. We further consider $e^+e^-$ annihilation through two virtual photons, and then find the fraction of $DD^{*}_T$ in $e^+e^-\to DD^{*}$ process to be about 91%.
