Anisotropic magnetic excitations from single-chirality antiferromagnetic state in Ca-kapellasite

We present a $^{35}$Cl NMR study for spin $S=1/2$ perfect kagome antiferromagnet Ca-kapellasite (CaCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}\cdot$0.6H$_{2}$O) with a magnetic transition at $T^{\ast}=7.2$ K. The static magnetic structure in the ground state has been determined to be a chirality-ordered $Q=0$ state, which is selected by a finite Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The low-energy magnetic excitations in the ordered state are investigated by the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate measurement. We detect a weakly temperature dependent contribution in the magnetic fluctuations perpendicular to the kagome plane in addition to the dispersive spin-wave contribution in the kagome plane. The low-energy magnetic excitations from the coplanar spin structure are attributed to the zero mode originating from the flat band in this kagome antiferromagnet.

Microscopic observation of superconducting fluctuations in $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Br by $^{13}$C NMR spectroscopy

We performed $^{13}$C-NMR experiment and measured spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature $1/T_{1}T$ near the superconducting (SC) transition temperature $T_{c}$ in $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Br ($κ$-Br salt), and $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu(NCS)$_{2}$ ($κ$-NCS salt). We observed the reduction of $1/T_{1}T$ starting at the temperature higher than $T_c$ in $κ$-Br salt. Microscopic observation of quasi-particle density of states in the fluctuating SC state revealed the effects of short-range Cooper pairs induced in the normal state to the quasi-particle density of states. We also performed systematic measurements in the fields both parallel and perpendicular to the conduction plane in $κ$-Br and $κ$-NCS salts, and confirmed that the reduction of $1/T_{1}T$ above $T_{c}$ is observed only in $κ$-Br salt regardless of the external field orientation.

Spin Susceptibility in the Superconducting state of Ferromagnetic Superconductor UCoGe

In order to determine the superconducting paring state in the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe, ^{59}Co NMR Knight shift, which is directly related to the microscopic spin susceptibility, was measured in the superconducting state under magnetic fields perpendicular to spontaneous magnetization axis: ^{59}K^{a, b}. ^{59}K^{a, b} shows to be constant, but does not decrease below a superconducting transition. These behaviors as well as the invariance of the internal field at the Co site in the superconducting state exclude the spin-singlet pairing, and can be interpreted with the equal-spin pairing state with a large exchange field along the c axis, which was studied by Mineev [Phys. Rev. B 81, 180504 (2010)].

Spin-Triplet Superconductivity Induced by Longitudinal Ferromagnetic Fluctuations in UCoGe: Theoretical Aspect

Identification of pairing mechanisms leading to the unconventional superconductivity realized in copper-oxide, heavy-fermions, and organic compounds is one of the most challenging issues in condensed-matter physics. Clear evidence for an electron-phonon mechanism in conventional superconductors is seen by the isotope effect on the superconducting transition temperatures $T_{\rm SC}$, since isotopic substitution varies the phonon frequency without affecting the electronic states. In unconventional superconductors, magnetic fluctuations have been proposed to mediate superconductivity, and considerable efforts have been made to unravel relationships between normal-state magnetic fluctuations and superconductivity. Here, we show that characteristic experimental results on the ferromagnetic (FM) superconductor UCoGe ($T_{\rm Curie} \sim 2.5 $ K and $T_{\rm SC} \sim 0.6$ K) can be understood consistently within a scenario of the spin-triplet superconductivity induced by FM spin fluctuations. Temperature and angle dependencies of the upper critical magnetic field of the superconductivity ($H_{c2}$) are calculated on the basis of the above scenario by solving the Eliashberg equation. Calculated $H_{c2}$ well agrees with the characteristic experimental results observed in UCoGe. This is a first example that FM fluctuations are shown to be a pairing glue of superconductivity.

Discovery of bright z ~ 7 galaxies in the UltraVISTA survey

We have exploited the new, deep, near-infrared UltraVISTA imaging of the COSMOS field, in tandem with deep optical and mid-infrared imaging, to conduct a new search for luminous galaxies at redshifts z ~ 7. The unique multi-wavelength dataset provided by VISTA, CFHT, Subaru, HST and Spitzer over a common area of 1 deg^2 has allowed us to select galaxy candidates at z > 6.5 by searching first for Y+J-detected (< 25 AB mag) objects which are undetected in the CFHT+HST optical data. This sample was then refined using a photometric redshift fitting code, enabling the rejection of lower-redshift galaxy contaminants and cool galactic M,L,T dwarf stars. The final result of this process is a small sample of (at most) ten credible galaxy candidates at z > 6.5 which we present in this paper. The first four of these appear to be robust galaxies at z > 6.5, and fitting to their stacked SED yields z = 6.98+-0.05 with a stellar mass M* = 5x10^9 Msun, and rest-frame UV spectral slope beta = -2.0+-0.2. The next three are also good candidates for z > 6.5 galaxies, but the possibility that they are low-redshift galaxies or dwarf stars cannot be excluded. Our final subset of three additional candidates is afflicted not only by potential dwarf-star contamination, but also contains objects likely to lie at redshifts just below z = 6.5. We show that the three even-brighter z > 7 galaxy candidates reported in the COSMOS field by Capak et al. (2011) in fact all lie at z ~ 1.5-3.5. Consequently the new z ~ 7 galaxies reported here are the first credible z ~ 7 Lyman-break galaxies discovered in the COSMOS field and, as the most UV-luminous discovered to date at these redshifts, are prime targets for deep follow-up spectroscopy. We explore their physical properties, and briefly consider the implications of their inferred number density for the form of the galaxy luminosity function at z = 7.

Enhanced NMR relaxation of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids and the magnitude of the carbon hyperfine coupling in single-wall carbon nanotubes

Recent transport measurements [Churchill \textit{et al.} Nat. Phys. \textbf{5}, 321 (2009)] found a surprisingly large, 2-3 orders of magnitude larger than usual $^{13}$C hyperfine coupling (HFC) in $^{13}$C enriched single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). We formulate the theory of the nuclear relaxation time in the framework of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory to enable the determination of the HFC from recent data by Ihara \textit{et al.} [Ihara \textit{et al.} EPL \textbf{90}, 17004 (2010)]. Though we find that $1/T_1$ is orders of magnitude enhanced with respect to a Fermi-liquid behavior, the HFC has its usual, small value. Then, we reexamine the theoretical description used to extract the HFC from transport experiments and show that similar features could be obtained with HFC-independent system parameters.

Spin Dynamics at the Mott Transition and in the Metallic State of the Cs_{3}C_{60} Superconducting Phases

We present here ^{13}C and ^{133}Cs NMR spin lattice relaxation T_{1} data in the A15 and fcc-Cs_{3}C_{60} phases for increasing hydrostatic pressure through the transition at p_{c} from a Mott insulator to a superconductor. We evidence that for p>> p_{c} the (T_{1}T)^{-1} data above T_{c} display metallic like Korringa constant values which match quantitatively previous data taken on other A_{3}C_{60} compounds. However below the pressure for which T_{c} goes through a maximum, (T_{1}T)^{-1} is markedly increased with respect to the Korringa values expected in a simple BCS scenario. This points out the importance of electronic correlations near the Mott transition. For p > p_{c} singular T dependences of (T_{1}T)^{-1} are detected for T >> T_{c}. It will be shown that they can be ascribed to a large variation with temperature of the Mott transition pressure p_{c} towards a liquid-gas like critical point, as found at high T for usual Mott transitions.

Superconductivity induced by longitudinal ferromagnetic fluctuations in UCoGe

From detailed angle-resolved NMR and Meissner measurements on a ferromagnetic (FM) superconductor UCoGe (T_Curie ~ 2.5 K and T_SC ~ 0.6 K), we show that superconductivity in UCoGe is tightly coupled with longitudinal FM spin fluctuations along the c axis. We found that magnetic fields along the c axis (H || c) strongly suppress the FM fluctuations and that the superconductivity is observed in the limited magnetic field region where the longitudinal FM spin fluctuations are active. These results combined with model calculations strongly suggest that the longitudinal FM spin fluctuations tuned by H || c induce the unique spin-triplet superconductivity in UCoGe. This is the first clear example that FM fluctuations are intimately related with superconductivity.

The Hubble Space Telescope Cluster Supernova Survey: V. Improving the Dark Energy Constraints Above z>1 and Building an Early-Type-Hosted Supernova Sample

We present ACS, NICMOS, and Keck AO-assisted photometry of 20 Type Ia supernovae SNe Ia from the HST Cluster Supernova Survey. The SNe Ia were discovered over the redshift interval 0.623 < z < 1.415. Fourteen of these SNe Ia pass our strict selection cuts and are used in combination with the world's sample of SNe Ia to derive the best current constraints on dark energy. Ten of our new SNe Ia are beyond redshift $z=1$, thereby nearly doubling the statistical weight of HST-discovered SNe Ia beyond this redshift. Our detailed analysis corrects for the recently identified correlation between SN Ia luminosity and host galaxy mass and corrects the NICMOS zeropoint at the count rates appropriate for very distant SNe Ia. Adding these supernovae improves the best combined constraint on the dark energy density ρ_{DE}(z) at redshifts 1.0 < z < 1.6 by 18% (including systematic errors). For a LambdaCDM universe, we find Ω_Λ= 0.724 +0.015/-0.016 (68% CL including systematic errors). For a flat wCDM model, we measure a constant dark energy equation-of-state parameter w = -0.985 +0.071/-0.077 (68% CL). Curvature is constrained to ~0.7% in the owCDM model and to ~2% in a model in which dark energy is allowed to vary with parameters w_0 and w_a. Tightening further the constraints on the time evolution of dark energy will require several improvements, including high-quality multi-passband photometry of a sample of several dozen z>1 SNe Ia. We describe how such a sample could be efficiently obtained by targeting cluster fields with WFC3 on HST.

Anisotropic magnetic fluctuations in the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe studied by angle-resolved ^{59}Co NMR

We have carried out direction-dependent ^{59}Co NMR experiments on a single crystal sample of the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe in order to study the magnetic properties in the normal state. The Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate measurements provide microscopic evidence that both static and dynamic susceptibilities are ferromagnetic with strong Ising anisotropy. We discuss that superconductivity induced by these magnetic fluctuations prefers spin-triplet pairing state.

Anisotropic Superconducting Properties of Optimally Doped BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.65}$P$_{0.35}$)$_2$ under Pressure

Magnetic measurements on optimally doped single crystals of BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_2$ ($x\approx0.35$) with magnetic fields applied along different crystallographic axes were performed under pressure, enabling the pressure evolution of coherence lengths and the anisotropy factor to be followed. Despite a decrease in the superconducting critical temperature, our studies reveal that the superconducting properties become more anisotropic under pressure. With appropriate scaling, we directly compare these properties with the values obtained for BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_2$ as a function of phosphorus content.

Incidence of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid state on the NMR spin lattice relaxation in Carbon Nanotubes

We report 13C nuclear magnetic resonance measurements on single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) bundles. The temperature dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate, 1/T1, exhibits a power-law variation, as expected for a Tomonage-Luttinger liquid (TLL). The observed exponent is smaller than that expected for the two band TLL model. A departure from the power law is observed only at low T, where thermal and electronic Zeeman energy merge. Extrapolation to zero magnetic field indicates gapless spin excitations. The wide T range on which power-law behavior is observed suggests that SWCNT is so far the best realization of a one-dimensional quantum metal.

An Intensive HST Survey for z>1 Supernovae by Targeting Galaxy Clusters

We present a new survey strategy to discover and study high redshift Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). By targeting massive galaxy clusters at 0.9<z<1.5, we obtain a twofold improvement in the efficiency of finding SNe compared to an HST field survey and a factor of three improvement in the total yield of SN detections in relatively dust-free red-sequence galaxies. In total, sixteen SNe were discovered at z>0.95, nine of which were in galaxy clusters. This strategy provides a SN sample that can be used to decouple the effects of host galaxy extinction and intrinsic color in high redshift SNe, thereby reducing one of the largest systematic uncertainties in SN cosmology.

HST Discovery of a z = 3.9 Multiply Imaged Galaxy Behind the Complex Cluster Lens WARPS J1415.1+36 at z = 1.026

We report the discovery of a multiply lensed Ly Alpha (Lya) emitter at z = 3.90 behind the massive galaxy cluster WARPS J1415.1+3612 at z = 1.026. Images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope(HST) using ACS reveal a complex lensing system that produces a prominent, highly magnified arc and a triplet of smaller arcs grouped tightly around a spectroscopically confirmed cluster member. Spectroscopic observations using FOCAS on Subaru confirm strong Lya emission in the source galaxy and provide redshifts for more than 21 cluster members, from which we obtain a velocity dispersion of 807+/-185 km/s. Assuming a singular isothermal sphere profile, the mass within the Einstein ring (7.13+/-0.38") corresponds to a central velocity dispersion of 686+15-19 km/s for the cluster, consistent with the value estimated from cluster member redshifts. Our mass profile estimate from combining strong lensing and dynamical analyses is in good agreement with both X-ray and weak lensing results.

Unconventional Superconductivity Induced by Quantum Critical Fluctuations in Hydrate Cobaltate Na$_{x}$(H$_3$O)$_{z}$CoO$_{x}\cdot$ $y$H$_{2}$O -- Relationship between Magnetic Fluctuations and the Superconductivity Revealed by a Co Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance --

Co nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) measurements were performed on various bilayered hydrate cobaltate Na_x(H_3O)_zCoO_2\cdot yH_2O with different values of the superconducting and magnetic-ordering temperatures, T_c and T_M, respectively. From measurements of the temperature and sample dependence of the NQR frequency, it was revealed that the NQR frequency is changed by the change of the electric field gradient (EFG) along the c axis ν_{zz} rather than the asymmetry of EFG within the ab-plane. In addition, it is considered that the change of ν_{zz} is gaverned mainly by the trigonal distortion of the CoO_2 block layers along the c axis, from the relationships between ν_{zz} and the various physical parameters. We found the tendency that samples with ν_{zz} larger than 4.2 MHz show magnetic ordering, whereas samples with lower ν_{zz} show superconductivity. We measured the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 in these samples, and found that magnetic fluctuations depend on samples. The higher-ν_{zz} sample has stronger magnetic fluctuations at T_c. From the relationship between ν_{zz} and T_c or T_M, we suggest that the NQR frequency can be regarded as a tuning parameter to determine the ground state of the system, and develop the phase diagram using ν_{zz}. This phase diagram shows that the highest-T_c sample is located at the point where T_M is considered to be zero, which suggests that the superconductivity is induced by quantum critical fluctuations. We strongly advocate that the hydrate cobaltate superconductor presents an example of the magnetic-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity argued in the heavy-fermion compounds. The coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism observed in the sample with the highest ν_{zz} is also discussed on the basis of the results of our experiments.
