Femtosecond Time-resolved MeV Electron Diffraction

We report the experimental demonstration of femtosecond electron diffraction using high-brightness MeV electron beams. High-quality, single-shot electron diffraction patterns for both polycrystalline aluminum and single-crystal 1T-TaS2 are obtained utilizing a 5 femto-Coulomb (~3x10^4 electrons) pulse of electrons at 2.8 MeV. The high quality of the electron diffraction patterns confirm that electron beam has a normalized emittance of ~50 nm-rad. The corresponding transverse and longitudinal coherence length are ~11 nm and ~2.5 nm, respectively. The timing jitter between the pump laser and probe electron beam was found to be ~ 100 fs (rms). The temporal resolution is demonstrated by observing the evolution of Bragg and superlattice peaks of 1T-TaS2 following an 800 nm optical pump and was found to be 130 fs. Our results demonstrate the advantages of MeV electron diffraction: such as longer coherent lengths, large scattering cross-section and larger signal-to-noise ratio, and the feasibility of ultimately realizing 10 fs time-resolved electron diffraction.

Production and Elliptic Flow of Dileptons and Photons in the semi-Quark Gluon Plasma

We consider the thermal production of dileptons and photons at temperatures above the critical temperature in QCD. We use a model where color excitations are suppressed by a small value of the Polyakov loop, the semi Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). Comparing the semi-QGP to the perturbative QGP, we find a mild enhancement of thermal dileptons. In contrast, to leading logarithmic order in weak coupling there are far fewer hard photons from the semi-QGP than the usual QGP. To illustrate the possible effects on photon and dileptons production in heavy ion collisions, we integrate the rate with a realistic hydrodynamic simulation. Dileptons uniformly exhibit a small flow, but the strong suppression of photons in the semi-QGP tends to bias the elliptical flow of photons to that generated in the hadronic phase.

The Study of Goldstone Modes in $ν$=2 Bilayer Quantum Hall Systems

At the filling factor $ν$=2, the bilayer quantum Hall system has three phases, the spin-ferromagnet phase, the spin singlet phase and the canted antiferromagnet (CAF) phase, depending on the relative strength between the Zeeman energy and interlayer tunneling energy. We present a systematic method to derive the effective Hamiltonian for the Goldstone modes in these three phases. We then investigate the dispersion relations and the coherence lengths of the Goldstone modes. To explore a possible emergence of the interlayer phase coherence, we analyze the dispersion relations in the zero tunneling energy limit. We find one gapless mode with the linear dispersion relation in the CAF phase.
